The National Museum of Mongolia, also known as Монголын Үндэсний Музей, is a treasure trove of artifacts and antiquities that offer a comprehensive journey through Mongolia's rich history, ethnography, and culture. From Neolithic relics to contemporary exhibits, the museum provides an unparalleled insight into Mongolian heritage.
Good, but i realized i just don't find going to museums rewarding enough for time spent. I can get more personalized history learning in YouTube or other documentaries.
Don O — Google review
Very good museum for an overview of Mongolian history - please note some of the exhibits have been moved to the new “Gengis Khan” museum around the corner which is a much more modern museum.
Jakob W — Google review
Excellent exhibits, and the costumes gallery is pretty spectacular. Kids went in free. Overall a great way to step into Mongolian history and culture from within the inner city.
Matt Y — Google review
The museum has a huge collection of items from Mongolian history. There are 9 halls that are arranged according to the historical period. The display of items start from prehistoric Mongolia to Democratic Mongolia. The interesting ones are from Chinggis Khan and his successors, the traditional mongolian culture and the influence of Buddhism which influenced mongolian society. The museum contains about 60000 artifacts and takes 2-3 hrs to see them. It's a great place for history lovers and requires a guide to understand the significance of the artifacts on display.
Soudamini M — Google review
The National Museum of Mongolia is a true cultural treasure—beautifully preserving and showcasing the rich tapestry of Mongolia's history, from the grandeur of the Mongol Empire to the vibrant traditions of nomadic life. Its exhibits are not only informative but deeply inspiring, offering visitors a powerful journey through the soul of a proud and resilient nation.

Museum building is pretty old. But at least there are text in English also. Next to reception is small gift shop. Museum is build like little maze. :) enjoy your trip and visit.

It’s always great to check out the Museum of the city/country you are visiting. I really enjoyed this one, we were lucky to have a tour guide run us through everything. Amazing

Awful. Lazy people. They have different working hours for winter and summer seasons. Summer season end on the 15th of September and the Winter season starts on the 16th. In summer season it is open every day but in winter - closed on Mondays. I came to Ulaanbaatar on the 15th of September (Monday). The museum had to be opened but was closed. They are not following their own rules, nobody inside spoke any other language than Mongolian. I, together with other tourists from France and Malaysia, was very disappointed since another major museum was also closed on Monday and I couldn’t visit the one that HAD TO BE OPEN!!!

The Choijin Lama Temple Museum, located in downtown Ulaanbaatar, is a stunning Buddhist monastery built between 1904 and 1908. Once the residence of Luvsan Haidav Chiojin Lama, it now houses five temples showcasing ancient art and cultural artifacts. The ornate pagoda-style architecture stands out amidst the modern high-rise buildings surrounding it.
This location is fantastic, conveniently situated near downtown and easily reachable on foot. I highly recommend it. While I cannot share images of the interiors due to restrictions, everything is stunning.

Fascinating museum. Smaller than some museums but unique collection of artifacts. We really enjoyed our visit and a great location in the heart of Ulaanbaatar.
John R — Google review
South of the "sail tower" building, this large Buddhist temple is a gem. The brightly colored building outside are worth the fee alone. But the real treat is inside the main building: ceremony mask, bronzes, clothing, wood cabinet: everything transpire history. The smell of old lacquer, centuries old wood floor and the dark, brooding atmosphere make for an attractive and addictive experience.
Raoul P — Google review
Perfect place to visit. There was almost nobody. You can check all buildings without rush and can read text in English. Enjoy your visit.
Dušan — Google review
The Choijin Lama Temple Museum, located in the heart of the city, left me deeply impressed. Surrounded by modern buildings, this temple stands as a timeless treasure of Mongolian culture and spirituality. I was amazed by the intricate statues, sacred artworks, and the deep sense of devotion reflected in every corner — a beautiful glimpse into Mongolia’s rich religious heritage.

It is very difficult to imagine a visit in UB without visiting this museum. At the end, this is not really different from other temples in the Country, but this is well preserved, full of masterpieces of art and very close to the central square. I would never miss it even if I had one day only for visiting UB. Entrance ticket 15.000

Beautifully conserved temple complex in the middle of modern skyscrapers of Ulaanbaatar. Makes a nice visit once you have visited the Zanabajar museum of Fine arts.

The Choijin Lama Temple Museum is an excellent attraction located in the city center of Ulaanbaatar. The Buddhist temple complex is very well preserved, and full of great art pieces, including sculptures by Zanabazar. Information signs are also in English, and the staff was helpful. The Choijin Lama Temple Museum is truly amazing, and I highly recommend a visit there during your stay in Ulaanbaatar.

The International Intellectual Museum, located in downtown UB, is a unique and playful collection of riddles, puzzles, games, and artifacts from around the world. Established in 1990 by a local toymaker, Tumen-Ulzii, this privately-owned museum showcases traditional Mongolian logic puzzles and other magical games. The museum's specialty is the traditional Mongolian logic puzzle that requires knowledge of physics to solve. Visitors can also enjoy a giant chess set on the premises.
Took a class of 7th graders to this fabulous museum! 4 stories and loads of chess sets! But also toys and fabulous wooden puzzles! 60min guided tour in English was great, I only wish the students had a little more time to play with the puzzles. Maybe a structured room or area where they can try them out? Rather than just watching the guide solve them all!? Thanks 😁
Linda S — Google review
The guided visit is included in the ticket price of 10,000 MNT. The docent was very kind and answered all of our questions about Mongolia. She also played games with us. Very enjoyable and an unforgettable experience. Btw, the design of the building is originated from the founder and it looks like a puzzle from the outside.
Mei L — Google review
4 floors. There is a Russian-speaking guide. A unique place, its founder is known in the world. In 2005, George Bush visited it. In addition to puzzles, there are Mongolian paintings, artworks and small shop.
Игорь Г — Google review
If you're into puzzles or chess, come here. More than 500 chess boards in different styles and from different places in the world, probably thousands of of puzzles. This is the lifelong project of a single person, and is a guided tour. So expect to learn some history, see a LOT of beautiful puzzles, but don't expect to spend a lot of time solving puzzles. They have a gift shop that is also very much recommended, you'll be hard pressed to find these kinds of puzzles for less than twice the price anywhere else. More than the price though, they have a few puzzles for purchase that are hard to find outside of mongolia. Puzzles made of bone, or puzzles with extra artistry on them. P.S. they have an english speaking guide!
Levav T — Google review
My husband took me here because it impressed them so much when they visited the first time. The docent was attentive and very helpful, answering questions about puzzles and history. Specifically, "everything is puzzle": almost everything in the museum, right down to the furniture and display cases, is made out of interlocking wooden parts not unlike the burr and turtle puzzles the founder made his name in. AND WE GOT TO MEET HIM! He just happened to be puttering through, maybe enjoying his collection, when we ran across him. The docent interpreted his wishes that we enjoyed his museum and relayed our impressed thanks. He seemed like just a nice old guy, the kind my eccentric grandfather would've got along with like peas in a pod. Getting to the museum can be a bit of a walk because it's tucked away among a series of Khrushchevkas but it's completely worth it. I didn't take any pictures because we thought they were disallowed but they have a few photo opportunities they'll happily help with.
Tim C — Google review
One of the best museums we've visited! Of course, we tend to like the smaller, more focused museums as opposed to the huge British Museum places that wear you out. This one is very focused on wooden puzzles and chess sets. A docent takes you through 4 floors and demonstrates things. They even have one wooden block puzzle challenge: any foreigner who can complete it in less than ten minutes will win $1000 USD. No one has yet!
Jerry B — Google review
One of the museums in UB which I enjoyed the most! Interactive, English speaking staff is so good! Many pieces we get to try our hands at, though most times it's not easy! Highly recommend!
Angie C — Google review
It was super interesting to see all the puzzles and try a few out. Our guide was great at pointing out different parts of the museum - what things meant, some history. We even got to meet the founder and creator of the puzzles. Such a different kind of museuem

Amusement park
Park
The National Amusement Park, situated in the heart of Ulaanbaatar, is a popular destination for families with young children. Established in 1965, it has undergone significant expansion and modernization over the years. The park features a variety of indoor and outdoor attractions including amusement rides, paddle boats, and entertainment shows. In addition to traditional rides like carousels and a pirate ship, the park also offers a cinema, shooting range, sports ground, and fairy-tale sculptures.
My 3 year old kid loved this place. There are about 6 rides which he can go to, and then there were some family rides where we had to join him along. There is a play area inside as well for very little kids who don't sit on rides. Most rides are for kids so if you are an adult who plans to go there, you may just have to stroll along and probably do a roller coaster, a pirate ship or a boa ride. There is the giant wheel too but its not an adventurous ride, it goes super slow and is just so that you can have a bird eye view of the city, something like that Singapore flyer or the London Eye. There are ice creams stations, face painting, animals viewing (peacock etc.) and some food stalls. Entry is free here and rides are chargeable. You can buy a pass of either 4, 6, 8 or 10 rides so that it gets cheap for you. On an average, rides would cost you about 8000 tugrik, but taking the pass brings that figure down. You can bring in your own food as there is no security check at any entrances. You can enter here from the Ulanbataar Park as well, so if you are using the public transport, you can get down right after Peace Bridge and walk inside the Ulanbataar park and then to the amusement park.
Naquiyah B — Google review
dont buy any food and eat it next to the bridge some random dude is gonna run past you and hes gonna snatch half of it(talking from an experience by the way not a joke)💔💔
Mshis C — Google review
There is no entry tax. if you want to get the vibe of Mongolian, then it is must be the place. And tickets are not expensive. Food stalls are everywhere and price is very reasonable.
Anand M — Google review
National Amusement Park is located within a beautifully maintained national park, offering a clean and pleasant environment. The grounds are well kept, making it a relaxing place to spend an entire day. However, I was quite shocked when the roller coaster came to a sudden, jarring stop at the end—it felt unexpectedly rough. On a brighter note, the central stage hosts excellent live performances that add great energy to the park, and the Ferris wheel provides a wonderful panoramic view of the surroundings.
T. G — Google review
Located in Ulaan Bator’s Sükhbaatar District, this modest amusement park has classic rides, a ferris wheel and seasonal ice-skating. It’s especially suited for young children and local families. On the flip side, many visitors note that maintenance is patchy, facilities feel dated and some rides look in need of repair. If you’re seeking a short fun stop in the city and understand its modest scale, it works. But don’t expect a modern theme-park experience.
Dani B — Google review
It was very good, I went there by myself but they were a lot of kids and teenagers. Most of the kid rides were closed because of the pandemic but all of the adult rides were open, the big roller coaster was working so if you like roller coasters, i reccomend riding it. In total there were about 10 food stands,7 drink and ice cream stands and 5 toy shops that were all working. Employees were friendly and was perfectly saying the safety rules to the customers 👏. All in all it was a great experience and it is perfect to visit in the summer.
Enkhmaa R — Google review
I don’t know who runs this place, but they’re doing a terrible job. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be an amusement park or just a public park. Since they got rid of the entrance fee, the place has been deteriorating rapidly. The facilities and rides are old and poorly maintained. The green areas are almost nonexistent they’ve replaced natural grass and trees with artificial ones that look pretty pathetic. They mostly employ students who aren’t properly trained, and security is practically nonexistent. Nowadays, there are many homeless people and kids wandering around, harassing visitors and asking for money or food. Since it’s free to enter, I guess that’s to be expected. About a decade ago, the park went through massive renovations and upgrades, with promises of turning it into something like Disneyland. But it’s nowhere close. Since then, nothing new has been added. At the main entrance, they even allowed pubs and karaoke bars in the entrance building I thought this was supposed to be a children’s park. Basically, the whole place is uncomfortable. Just walking there makes me uneasy. Despite being state property, many people misuse it.
Badamjav M — Google review
An incredibly amazing amusement park for Ulaanbaatar and the rest of Mongolia. Quite a few attractions are seen here, including a ferris wheel, rollercoasters, and more. Tickets to use rides and other attractions are fairly cheap, and don't have to be booked in advance of visiting. Definately coming here again soon!

Gorkhi Terelj National Park, located about 37 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar city center, is a picturesque destination in Mongolia. The park offers stunning natural features such as unique rock formations like Turtle Rock and the Old Man Reading a Book, as well as Khagiin Khar Lake and Yestii Hot Water Springs. Visitors can also enjoy activities like hiking and exploring the beautiful glacial lake. Additionally, the park provides facilities for picnics and other recreational activities.
Foxes spotted in pack. I love this place lowkey, just gotta fix the cracked stone path yk. Favourite place to go skating/skateboarding
Hoshi S — Google review
Best place in the city to get away from the city noise, breathe fresher air, and be in a large green space. If you like running, you will be in great company, especially in the morning. Great for biking, letting the kids run around, and picnics. There multiple playgrounds throughout the park. Sometimes you’ll see a little grey fox running around and other wildlife. All the shops are at the main gate. It’s less developed the farther south and east you go…you can also bring your own bow and arrow and shoot in the undeveloped part.
Kathryn C — Google review
Surely the best option if you want to escape from the city’s pollution and traffic. Nice to have a walk or to run/jog, with a ring of approximately 3/4 kms all asphalted. Highly recommended, especially early in the morning, to enjoy unbeatable sunrises and quietness! I have also met corsac foxes and wild horses, which is great!
Marcello P — Google review
Best spacious area in the UB area. Close to downtown, easy to walk or take a cab..great place for exercise, run, bike, and strollers. Safe during daylight. I wouldn't recommend being there at night. Family friendly, perfect for elders and house pets. Be careful, though many dogs were not on leash. I love it, though. Summer probably would be packed once little coffee and fast food shops were open.
Buyana T — Google review
for runners, its one of the places you can run safely and peacefully. Also foxes there. They are safe :))
Bayarkhuu O — Google review
Great place for weekend walks, biking, and enjoying the nature. A very large area and many leisure activities to do as well. One hundred percent recommended for those who want to spend some time away from UB traffic and enjoy some peace.
Google G — Google review
This place is a nice change of pace. Bring the family, or come solo, rent a bike for yourself or for two people and ride the entire outdoor park. It is a lively green, athletic, some quiet spots to chill by yourself. Today was a busy day because of the holiday but I've heard on non holidays it's not that crowded. Come in the late afternoon and evening time, you will definitely have fun! Afterwards, head over to the restaurants and grab a convenient bite to eat🙋‍♂️
Working ( — Google review
My favourite place to walk and feel slightly away from the bustle of the city. Despite the park not being up to any international standard, it's still better than having no park at all. Just wish there were people maintaining the park and actually opening the toilets. The toilet signs are there but they're always locked. Can't expect much from Mongolia but this is the one of the few best places in ulaanbaatar to feel healthy.

Gandantegchinlen Monastery, also known as Gandan Monastery, is a significant Buddhist complex in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Originally consisting of over 100 temples and monasteries serving a population of 50,000, it faced destruction during religious purges in the late 1930s. However, since the early 1990s, Buddhism has been openly practiced again in Mongolia.
The main and biggest temple in UB and recently re-developed as well. Great atmosphere and I get incredible feeling of calmness and protection each time when I visit. Highly recommend the giftshop and store located inside the temple as their product well priced and fair value.
Uyanga P — Google review
The courtyard was under construction and the area was really dusty. We went to the main building but i decided not to go inside because apparently I gotta pay some amount and my cash has run out as this is the last place to visit before my flight. The area was big. We got stuck due to a sudden rain and sheltered in front of the buildings, i think for the students. One of the monk kindly let us in the study area away from the rain.
Zuhdi M — Google review
gandantegchinlen monastery in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, was originally built in 1835 which is Mongolia's principal center of Buddhist education. It was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years. The major attraction of the monastery is the 26.5-meter gilded bronze statue of Buddha, which was rebuilt in 1996. There are multiple temples and assembly halls, and library within the complex. The entire place is very beautiful and takes about 2 two hours to visit it.
Soudamini M — Google review
This location gets very crowded on the weekends as the large standing Buddha can be viewed at this complex. They accept credit cards for the tickets and you could spend quite a bit of time visiting the different complexes.
Happy O — Google review
Gandan Monastery is really beautiful. The complex has lots to see and experience. I learned a lot about the history of Buddhism and Mongolian history and culture.
Elizabeth S — Google review
Together with the Chojin Lama museum, this is a must-see visiting UB. Not really close to the center, this is a chaotic (for tourists and hundreds of monks) active temple, where the big ceremony assembly hall works close to historical temples refurbished and well preserved. If you have just few time, visit the Library (free of charge) and the main temple with the amazing 26-meter statue of Buddhist divinity (20.000 tugriks) . The rest of the complex is not mandatory.
Matteo B — Google review
While they were asking for a small entrance fee to go inside the main temple, you’re able to wander around the rest of the complex for free which is great. It’s a super peaceful spot and the design of the buildings is great to admire. If you enter via the main entrance you’ll pass an extreme group of thousands of pigeons, which you may or may not find disgusting and scary! If it’s the former, fortunately there are other entrances to avoid them! It’s a site well worth taking the time to stroll through during a visit to the city.

A lovely Buddhist monastery. Costs about £GBP4 to get in. We went in and spun the prayer wheels. The compound is generally interesting with several boards giving information in English. Very calm place well worth a visit.

Sukhbaatar Square stands as the vibrant heart of Ulaanbaatar, drawing in numerous visitors throughout the year. During the summer months from June to September, the main square in front of the Parliament Building is transformed with artificial turf, creating a serene space for relaxation and observing people. Additionally, a stage is set up during this period for free concerts, ceremonies, and various festivities that take place almost every day.
Fun place to visit! Get to see much of the cultural portion of the Capital. I visited during a holiday, so there was a concert going on as well. Seems like the entire city came out to celebrate
Vaibhav B — Google review
The hub of the city centre and clearly a popular place for locals to gather, especially on the weekend. There’s families playing in the ride on cars, weddings having their photos taken, and during my visit there was also a large event taking place. The statues are great to admire and the iconic photo background with the palace is a must see. It’d be hard to visit the city without coming here but it’s well worth it too.
Steve B — Google review
Wide area landmark in the middle of capital city. As when I visited is the late winter (beginning of March) there are some ice sculptures left to play around. The statue is gorgeous and well preserved. I met many group of tourists here.

Definitely a must visit if you are in UB. Lots of statues drifting local culture and heritage. Great spots for photos and impressive Soviet era buildings surround the square.

Let’s speak clear: this monumental square is iconic for UB, but absolutely there’s nothing special. The statue of the General in the middle with all the flowers around gives a little of colours, but that’s not enough to make this square a must-see. The parliament next to the square makes this place important: let’s consider it a place to meet and a starting point for visiting the City and the close interesting museums! By night in summertime there are many activities for children and fun movement enjoying the open spaces for biking, skating, riding

If you’re visiting Mongolia, Sükhbaatar Square is a must-see stop — even if just for a quick photo. It’s the heart of the city and a place where the community gathers for important events. When we visited, it happened to be Korean Day, and the square was full of people celebrating, participating in activities, and enjoying the atmosphere. A vibrant spot to experience local culture right in the center of Ulaanbaatar.

Sukhbaatar square is center of Ulaanbaatar. Sukhbaatar is Mongolian hero who fought for Mongolian freedom. He is all Mongolian General and only lived 30 years, but his legacy remains till this day. His portrait is appeared on 20 50 and 100 mongolian tugrug. 1 province named after him which is located in east area of the country. His death is mystery, historians told he was poisoned by foreign doctor but not it’s not proven. This place calm His statue opened in 1946 its surrounded by 14 lions which is symbolising Mongolia country is untouchable protected

Omg what yall know bout hunnu mall. My fav mall of all time. Have all the fast food places hot pot, cafes, bakeries. A great view. Book store, jewelry places, playgrounds, home decor stores make upstores stationary shop toys store manicure brand shops anything you can imagine, and a ice skate. Spending a day there you can find anything. Its for any family member. Really my favourite places. It may be old but it remains the same. Did i mention the dinasour skeletons small river dancing fishes below a bridge. Recommended. However only disadvantage is that its far from the center and with traffic. Since its away from the center, the air is great too😝😝

There are many places to eat such as hot pot, Korean restaurants, Burger King, and Japanese fast food. There are also kids' play areas, an ice skating rink, a movie theater, and other nice places to spend time. While there aren't many shops, you can find almost everything you need. However, the information about where things are located might be a bit unclear.

Good place to hangout. Has an ice rink for skating.. lots of branded shops of clothes , bags, shoes ,cosmetics .. cafes.. n also a movie theatre.. n a supermarket in the basement.

After the mall opened, it felt like almost everyone had visited — there was even a saying that if you hadn’t, you weren’t human. I wasn’t that ‘human’ until I finally went, but it didn’t quite live up to the hype for me. You could barely get a good view of the pond.

worst experience in cinema ever. The movie had no subtitles from the beginning to first 20 and then it was reset from beginning and subtitles were not even back on. The Natural History Museum of Mongolia, situated in the heart of Ulaanbaatar near Sukhbaatar Square, is a compact yet impressive paleontology museum. It boasts a diverse collection of artifacts and fossils that trace Mongolia's history from the Stone Age to modern times.
Loved it loved it loved it! Don't miss the animal, birds and turtles on the top floor. It's an easy 1 hour and kids would especially love it.
Mark — Google review
Lots of taxidermy. Great for kids. Worth it if you're really into dinosaurs like the tarbosaurus bataar. Makes you realize how many of these fossils were found in Mongolia. The rock and gem section was pretty cool too. A bit run down. I think I was one of three people there on a weekend.
W S — Google review
The museum is fantastic, featuring a wide range of exhibits. Most importantly, the explanations are provided in English. It is worth spending time here, as it covers everything from the solar system and meteorites to dinosaurs and humans, and concludes with the flora and fauna of Mongolia. It's truly a remarkable experience.
Lex E — Google review
Excellent dinosaur exhibit. Loved seeing the complete skeleton of the Tarbosaurus Bataar. There is an exhibit on the 3rd floor of Mongolia's flora and fauna. Highly recommended. There are also 2 gift shops where you can get souvenirs.
Paul A — Google review
The museum feels like the fossils that they are displaying. It's old and run down. You can see its probably not well funded compare to Genghis Khan National Museum but nevertheless It has its own beauty and charm. Once you are out of the city and travel thru the open vastness of the Mongolian outdoors you cant help n relate back that this magnificent dinosaurs once roam this landscape. It's not a huge museum. You probably can finish this in about an hour.
Francis O — Google review
An excellent location for a rainy day trip. My son loved the fossils. If you want to see the real size dinosaurs, this place is for you! Can’t tell you more or I’ll spoil all the fun! Children can enter for free. There are two great shops for souvenirs and artwork.

This rickety museum is worth going to is you really want to see the turbosaurus Rex exhibition. The taxidermy is … not good. The resolution on the photographs looks like 8-bit. The diagrams of the solar system look like they were made by a 4th grader. Still, if you have about 45 minutes to spend, swing by here. Wonderful ceiling.

Nearest hiking mountain from UB. Actually it’s only 5km away from center of UB 😄. It has lots of paid parking and also it has Line bus and taxi get u there. If you hike through middle routine it will take 1’30 hours to get top /around 2km/. Also it has 2 other tops which is way too extreme to me 😂. There is no management or owner so if u decide to go there in winter or when it’s rainy Pls be careful and get some hiking tools for your safety. There is no such things like help section, camping zone, ladder part and mountain map😅 u have to make just by yourself

I hiked Bogd Khan Mountain on July 13, 2025. I started at 9 AM, and luckily, the weather was perfect, so it didn’t bother me at all. The trail had plenty of large rocks, so trekking shoes are definitely recommended. Overall, it felt very refreshing, and as someone who hikes often, I’d rate the difficulty around 4 out of 10. The view from the summit was both breathtaking and rejuvenating. There are trail markers painted on the trees, which made it easy to navigate even as a first-time solo traveler. It felt safe and enjoyable.

Desserts are also fun and 2 are Mongolian cheese based unique. Highly recommended for culinary options and fun tourist experiences

This place is the poster child for bad Mongolian service IMO. Lots of waiters milling about, super slow service, absolutely no care or attention given to customers. The food is genuinely great and is an enjoyable eat for locals although it does take a while to come out (minimum 30 minutes). Interestingly, I’d say their Mongolian milk tea really ranks among the best.

Overall, quite ok experience here at this chain restaurant. I expected a little more but seems like it is quite average. I tried the grilled lamb and it was mostly really really tough. Not sure if it was over cooked or just a tough part of the lamb- quite disappointing. The cheesy chicken breast turned out quite good surprisingly. Tender and it went well with the cheese. Not too overwhelming. The fish soup was also good- served piping hot it was a good appetiser of sorts. Each dish is around 7usd depending on what you order. My first meal in Mongolia so I can’t comment on the value but seems pretty reasonable for what it is.

Sukhbaataryn Khoshoo, also known as Sukhbaatar Square, is a popular tourist destination in Mongolia. The central square features a striking bronze statue of Damdin Sukhbaatar, who played a pivotal role in declaring Mongolia's independence from China in 1921. Visitors can admire the realistic depiction of Sukhbaatar on horseback atop a high pedestal.
The equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, the iconic figure of Mongolian independence, stands tall and proud at the heart of Sukhbaatar Square. This imposing monument, unveiled in 1946, depicts Sükhbaatar on horseback, his arm raised in a gesture of defiance and leadership. The statue serves as a powerful symbol of Mongolian nationalism and a reminder of the country's struggle for independence. While the statue itself is impressive, it's worth noting that its historical significance is often debated. Some argue that it represents a romanticized and idealized version of Mongolian history, while others see it as a symbol of national unity and pride. Regardless of one's perspective, the statue remains a focal point of Sukhbaatar Square and a popular spot for photos and gatherings.
Vagabond C — Google review
Damdin Sükhbaatar (1893-1923) was a Mongolian revolutionary, founder of the Mongolian People's Party & leader of the Mongolian partisan army that took Khüree during the Mongolian Revolution of 1921 & enshrined as the "Father of Mongolia's Revolution"...

Nice statue of Sukhbaatar to whom the square is named after.
Rob N — Google review
Sükhbaatar Square, the heart of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, is a sprawling public plaza named after revolutionary hero Damdin Sükhbaatar, whose 1921 victory over Chinese forces sparked independence. Originally called “Freedom Square,” it was renamed in 1946, with his equestrian statue—erected in 1946—dominating its center. Designed in the 1920s as the city shifted from a monastic hub to a Soviet-style capital, it’s framed by key buildings: the Government Palace (north), State Opera (east), and modern towers like Blue Sky (south). Once a dusty field, it grew into a ceremonial and protest space, notably during 1990’s democracy rallies. Today, it’s a vibrant mix of history and modernity, hosting festivals, skateboarding teens, and tourists, with Genghis Khan’s statue adding gravitas since 2006. The equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, unveiled on July 8, 1946, anchors Sükhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar. Crafted by sculptor Sonomyn Choimbol, it depicts the revolutionary leader astride his horse, arm raised, commemorating his 1921 declaration of independence from China. Made of bronze, it stands 4 meters tall on a 12-meter pedestal, facing north toward the Government Palace. A symbol of Mongolian resilience, it’s a focal point for national pride and gatherings.

Joshua C — Google review
The skiing experience itself was great, and I would have given 5 stars if the staff had been more professional and the service better managed. We first visited on January 19th (Sunday) and had to wait in line for an hour, only to be told that the register would be closed for another 40 minutes because they ran out of helmets. Since it was getting close to sunset, and we didn’t want to wait even longer, we decided to return the next day. Fortunately, on Monday, there was almost no line, likely because it was a weekday. However, what truly shocked me was the rudeness and lack of professionalism from the staff. One staff member—a chubby boy with shoulder-length wavy hair—was mumbling curse words while serving customers. When someone asked for a replacement for their ski shoes, he threw the old pair onto the ground with force and visible anger, startling everyone nearby, including me. Most of the staff seemed annoyed whenever someone asked for a replacement of skiing equipment—even when the mistake was on their end. Their attitude made it feel as though they hated their jobs. This wasn’t a case of being overwhelmed on a busy day; it was a quiet Monday with no more than two or three customers at the ski and shoe distribution stations at a time. While the skiing experience itself was fantastic, the management really needs to focus on staff training to ensure customers are treated with basic courtesy.

The Ulaanbaatar Zoo and Aquarium, located inside the National Amusement Park, has recently undergone renovations. Despite its simple setup, it offers a variety of animals including monkeys, peacocks, sharks, and crocodiles. While some visitors appreciate the opportunity to see exotic animals in Mongolia, others express concerns about the small enclosures and animal stress. The zoo is relatively small but has potential for improvement after reopening post-COVID-19.
Love this place, quite shocking UB has such fantastic place for kids and even for adults to spend their family time. Lots of different types of fish included sharks and crocodile and animals included monkey, peacock and other exotic animals. Definitely highly recommending for everyone.

Not sure how to rate but it is the only thing that resembles a zoo in town where kids and adults can see and interact with live animals exotic to Mongolians. And that is a big plus. On the other hand, animals are enclosed in small cages and seemed a bit stressed.

Ceramic Art Studio, ClayArt LLC is a delightful haven for creativity located in Ulaanbaatar. Established in 2010, it proudly holds the title of Mongolia's first ceramic art studio equipped with top-notch facilities. Here, children and families can unleash their artistic flair by crafting unique bowls, vases, and dishes under the guidance of skilled professionals. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, thanks to the friendly staff who ensure everyone feels welcome.
Lovely place with the perfect atmosphere provided by the staff and the interior setting. The Instructor and the Owner were both very kind and generous. Suitable for friends, family, corporate-leisure and couple date activities. No need to come prepared as they have long, water-proof aprons that protect your clothing from clay! Make sure you check in before 4pm(last call) as they close at 6pm! The workshop lasts for about 1.5-2 hours. The piece you make takes 2 weeks to be finalized. (optional painting and glazing completed by the staff)
Enkhjin B — Google review
A great place to be creative! The studio has everything you need, and the instructors are nice and supportive.
Saruul-Erdene M — Google review
We went there to make mugs for us. It takes 2-2.5 hours. The instructor was nice and explained everything. We were so excited to make and decorate by ourselves and enjoyed it. After 2week we were excited to go there and pick our mugs. One mug was nice and just how I wanted the color and everything but the other mug paintings were a mess. When I asked can you fix it the person who was in charge maybe impossible. It looked bad and I was so disappointed. So I contacted them again on their phone and FB page. They said they could repaint it but even after that, it doesn't look like normal mugs still a little messy. Anyway better than before so I took it. But it seems like they didn't care about all the products. For them maybe it is just one of the many mugs they were doing but for us, it is quite meaningful to do it. I don't think people go there every day to make things so it is mostly a one-time nice experience for most people. So I think they should consider what customers feel and be more aware of it. She said the color we wanted to paint the mug was left so little which is why the color got messy. If that was the case, she should have mentioned or asked us and we could've chosen a different color. So that is why I am disappointed.

During a visit in 2018, it was evident that the center provides essential care for children, offering tutoring assistance and nutritious meals. Additionally, Asral operates a felting workshop that produces charming items for sale.
I visited in 2018. Everyone was working hard to take care of the children, who seemed to feel it was their second home. They were given tutoring help, then had a nourishing hot lunch before going to school. The felting workshop produces lovely items for sale. The director, social worker, monks, volunteers, cook all want the best for the families they help.

Nature & Parks
Gorkhi Terelj National Park, located near Ulaanbator, is a popular destination with a mix of natural beauty and tourist amenities. The park offers hot springs, the scenic River Tuul, and opportunities for activities like hiking and horseback riding. Visitors can explore Turtle Rock for unique perspectives and visit the nearby Genghis Khan Complex. However, some may find the area slightly crowded due to numerous tourist camps and resorts.
We visited the National Park during September. Best part of the Park was the landscape, the mountains coverd with golden and brown trees. There is the Turtle rock and the Aryabal meditation temple inside the park, that are worth visiting. The Buddhist temple is located on a picturesque mountain, that takes about 30 min to climb up. The view from the temple is breathtaking. There are a lot of Ger Camps everywhere, some serve as hotels. Horse riding, double humped camel riding and hiking are some of the activities to participate. We had food in a restaurant that served really yummy lunch. The National Park does not seem to be a protected area, lot of constructions everywhere which is a sore to the eyes. The landscape in the National Park must be changing with change of season. It's worth visiting if you are visiting Ulaanbaatar.
Soudamini M — Google review
2025.02.27 the weather is still cold so I can only take photos and cannot hiking. The view is beautiful and the air is nice, the river is frozen.
Gunruthai C — Google review
A real disappointment to visit- upon entering the park you are met with concrete buildings and overdeveloped ger camps, half completed construction sites, rubbish everywhere , metal fences poles and wires. We walked up to the temple and though the landscape is no doubt beautiful, it is completely ruined by the view of all the tourist resorts below. Also no sign of any hiking trails anywhere, at least not in the part of the park that we were, and no indication of anywhere we could go that would. Clearly has just been exploited for tourism , nature has not been protected - trees been cleared to build more camps and resorts etc. Not what we expected from a so-called “national park”.
Viola J — Google review
The land is so beautiful. It’s a shame they are ruining it with a bunch of tourists traps, condos, and resorts. It makes it so ugly and there is trash everywhere! Also, they have animals tied up to where they can barely move at all. Cant even bend their legs, they have them just laid on the ground, never allowed to stand up unless someone wants to ride them. It’s really sickening to see. :( also, there are a lot of building that you can tell they started building, but then couldn’t finish. So a ton of open construction sites that will now just rot there and ruin the MOST beautiful areas. What a shame. This is a national park, I thought that means you are supposed to PRESERVE nature! Instead it’s literally being destroyed.
Katherine O — Google review
Near the entrance to the Park, you'll see a massive rock structure that looks like a turtle. You can hike up Turtle Rock for a great view. Across from Turtle Rock is a store to purchase snacks or beverages. Located in a beautiful area, I was disappointed to see an overflow of tourist camps and resorts scattered everywhere. Near the park is a wooden bridge. There you will find a beautiful view of Tuul River. About 1 km from Turtle Rock is The Aryabal Meditation Temple. You will discover Buddhist teaching signs in both English and Mongolian along the path to the temple. There is a small bridge leading up to the Temple. Once you reach the top, enjoy the spectacular view of the mountains and scenery. Nearby is the Milarepa Cave. There are activities such as horseback riding, & hiking available.
Melanie E — Google review
Still a natural place to visit but for how long? Many building sites, new resorts. Soon it won’t be possible to see the mountains.
Bar D — Google review
Very nice place. I have been there on May of 2025. Very large rock with the shape of turtle. You can get great photographs. Very nice cheap and beautiful souvenir shop next to it. There is also a great monastery you should visit.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is a captivating destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Located just a short drive from Ulaanbaatar, the park offers stunning landscapes, including dramatic rock formations, lush meadows, and dense forests. The park's diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of wildlife, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. One of the highlights is the iconic Turtle Rock, a massive granite formation resembling a turtle, which is perfect for photography and short hikes. The Aryabal Meditation Temple, perched on a hill, provides a serene spot with panoramic views, ideal for those seeking tranquility and a spiritual experience. Accommodations range from traditional gers (yurts) to more modern lodges, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Mongolian culture while enjoying comfortable amenities. Horseback riding, hiking, and river rafting are popular activities that offer a deeper connection with the park's natural beauty. The hospitality of the local people adds to the charm of Gorkhi-Terelj, making it not just a visit to a national park, but an enriching cultural experience. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or a glimpse into Mongolia's heritage, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is a must-visit destination.

Its best known as the home of the Przewalski’s horse(clained to be the only wild horse surviving nowadays) , the park offers a rare chance to see these once-extinct wild horses roaming freely, but its hard to spot them, so you need a bit of patient and luck in order to see them.

Fabulous! I volunteered here for a week and loved every minute! Most people just come for a day to the wild horses — which are marvelous!— but if you stay longer you’ll see more. Accommodations are good and food is not fancy, but nourishing.

An amazing park to visit with family. You will require a vehicle to drive through this large park. There were lots of marmots popping up everywhere. We saw the Przewalski horses, a wild Mongolian horse with 2 baby foals. Near the front entrance you will see a couple of gers and one had a video presentation about the horses. Not far off is a small presentation of the type of animals located in the area. A must visit to see the last of these wild horses

If you are going to visit here for only few hours and you’d be visiting in daytime, better not go. It was wonderful to see the wild horses once though, that was all. And it costs 70,000mnt per person. What you can see is depending on your luck.
