The Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity is a modern basilica located at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima in Portugal. It was built to accommodate large services and is a significant site for Catholic pilgrims, attracting over 5 million visitors annually. The basilica honors the appearance of the Virgin Mary to three children in 1917. Its construction began in 2004 and was completed in 2007, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the Apparitions.
This is one of three above ground churches located at the Fatima plaza - the apparition sight of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The entrance is above ground but the MASSIVE church is actually underground. Also under the plaza is more chapels - two beautiful reflection ponds, maybe even baptismal fonts. The Church of the Most Holy Trinity is situated within the enclosure of the Sanctuary of Fátima, on the opposite side of the Basilica. It was inaugurated in 2007 but had been planned since 1973. In fact since then there had been the need to build a new church because the Basilica wasn’t large enough to accommodate the great number of pilgrims who wanted to attend services within the Sanctuary, on days of average turnout. The Church is a modern, round, white building, the color of the stone that covers it, a local stone known as “white of the sea”. This huge building is 125 m in diameter, with no intermediate support; it has a volume of 130,000 m3 and 8,633 seats and it can be divided into two areas by a moving partition. There are 76 seats for disabled people. Its architect was the Greek Alexandros Tomazis but other important artists contributed to this project. The 8 m high main door, for example, made of bronze and dedicated to Christ was realized by Pedro Calapez, the painted tile panel in the atrium of the Apostles Peter and Paul is by Siza Vieira, and the 34 m high tall bronze cross outside the Church, is by the German artist Robert Schad.

It is a beautiful building in the shape of a semi-circle that could evoque the memory of a pair of harms stretching out to receive you. The chapels are beautiful, especially the Chapel of the Aparitions. For its small size it has undoubtedly the highest level of visitors. It is the main building dedicated to Saint Mary. The pilgrims here have a very unique way of showing their devotion to the saint and demonstrating their gratitude for the positive outcomes in their lives, which they attribute to the saint. It is common to see pilgrims walking on their knees sometimes for miles to towards the chapel as a way of offering their sacrifice. Mass is also held here before thousands of visitors from an array of nations. There are amenities such as restaurants and cafes around making it easy for families to spend the entire day there. The musical atmosphere is again absolutely amazing as a symphony of recorded choir music surrounds the space, creating a soothing and calming effect that is highly effective in conducing to a state of introspection and prayer.

The Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity is spectacular, as is the whole of Fatima. This deeply religious and spiritual site has an amazing feeling of peace and serenity, despite the thousands of pilgrims who come here. The Fatima story is extremely significant and, if you can, I would recommend a pilgrimage to this holy site. Amazing place.
Gerry C — Google review
This is an extremely beautiful modern structure build to accommodate about 9000 people for services. It is extraordinary as there are no pillared supporting the roof. The Altar is amazing and was the work of a collective of modern artists. In the square in front of the basilica there are several statures but the statue of Christ on the cross is elegant simple and moving. A wonderful place. Down the stairs there are public toilets as well.
G M — Google review
The Basílica da Santíssima Trindade in Fátima is truly a place of peace, faith, and reflection. Its modern design is impressive yet simple, offering a serene space for prayer and contemplation. The atmosphere is very moving, whether you are visiting for religious reasons or simply to admire the architecture and history of such a sacred site. Together with the Sanctuary of Fátima and the original church, it creates a deeply spiritual experience. The basilica is beautifully maintained, spacious, and welcoming to visitors from all over the world. A must-visit when in Fátima.

The Most Holy Trinity Basilica is so huge and beautiful. It's partially underground. There is a Eucharistic Adoration chapel under ground in front of it and confession. All the gold to honor Our God.: Father, Son and Holy Spitit.

It's a huge building in the shape of semi circle and a sitting capacity of 9000 people. Well decorated, well lit, cool and quiet.

The Chapel of the Apparitions is a significant pilgrimage site and chapel built in 1919, dedicated to the apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Located in Fatima, Portugal, it is a major Catholic sanctuary visited by over 5 million people annually. The main Sanctuary Square, where the shrine is located, is twice the size of St Peter's Square in the Vatican. The chapel holds great religious importance as it is believed to be where the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children.
This was a very beautiful moving spiritual experience. We had Mass, prayed the Rosary and had a candlelight procession. It was so awesome and we sang to The Lady of the Rosary (the Blessed Virgin Mary) as we had a candlelight procession on the grounds outside of the Chapel of Apparitions and the Basilica of the Lady of the Rosary of Fatima. I went two nights because it was so beautiful! I highly recommend this experience!

The grotto of Our Lady of Fatima. Mass celebrated here often during the day. Quite spiritual experience.
Stanly W — Google review
Visiting the Chapel of the Apparitions was an incredibly special experience for our family. It was the first place we went to in the Sanctuary area. We sat with our children in the pews and celebrated mass. Later that night we returned, bought candles, and prayed a candlelit rosary. It was definitely chilly! (we went in mid-March) The Chapel itself only have 3 walls, thus being completely open on 1 side. The closer you are to the exposed area, the colder it is obviously. The rosary was beautiful and was immediately followed by a candlelit procession starting and ending at the chapel. The speakers rang out the Ave maria we were singing throughout the entire sanctuary. The sea of twinkling lights was spectacular. We would definitely go again if given the chance!
Jennifer C — Google review
We went on Mass at night, a lot of people were there, the seats aren’t empty anymore. Next day we go in the morning, still see believers crawling on the path to the Chapel.
Daud — Google review
This is a special holy place that is worth the trip. Both religious and gorgeous. Plus you can add other stops on a trip from lisbon to really make it a special day.

The place on earth where to be on the knees does not hurt but brings peace and refreshing joy to the soul. Praying the Rosary here is a special experience, above all, for Catholics.

Sacred Place where exactly Our Lady appeared to three Shepherd Children. Many those specially Love our Lady honour her Mediating and praying the Mysteries of the Holy Rosary on their knee and going around the apparition Chapel. I was blessed to offer the Holy Mass here. Please visit and be blessed through her by the Lord Jesus. Yes Our Lady can hold your hand on your journey and no doubt you'll blessed with Eternal rewards. AVE MARIA

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima is a significant pilgrimage site and religious complex in Portugal. It is believed that the Virgin Mary appeared to three children at this location in 1917, delivering special messages. The site witnessed a Miracle of the Sun, drawing tens of thousands of visitors. Today, it attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually and is a must-visit for religious followers and curious travelers alike.
The sanctuary at Fatima is one of the most peaceful and serene sites on the planet. A place of significant pilgrimage for catholics from all over the world. The size and scale of the sanctuary is breathtaking, with the apparition chapel (site of the Marian apparitions) providing a more intimate are for reflection, prayer and Mass. Regardless of religious faith (or none), Fatima is a location that I would recommend.
Gerry C — Google review
Visiting the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima was one of the most touching and unforgettable experiences of my life. The moment you arrive, there’s a powerful sense of peace and reverence that surrounds you — it’s as if the entire place is wrapped in prayer and hope. Standing before the Basilica, lighting a candle, and reflecting in silence truly moves the heart. Whether you come as a believer or simply as a seeker, you can feel the deep spiritual energy of this sacred site. The atmosphere is calm and filled with compassion — people from all over the world gather here with love, faith, and unity. The Chapel of the Apparitions, where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three shepherd children, is especially humbling. It’s a reminder of faith, miracles, and the enduring power of devotion. The Sanctuary is beautifully maintained, with kind volunteers, serene spaces for prayer, and stunning architecture that honors the history of this holy place. I left with a full heart, renewed spirit, and a deep sense of gratitude. If you visit Portugal, Our Lady of Fátima Sanctuary isn’t just a destination — it’s a life-changing experience.

Visited May 28-29, 2025 with fam. A great place of worship. The chapel beside the cathedral is open all day. Masses in various languages and different times are offered here. There’s a line for candle offerings beside the chapel. We attended the prayer vigil at night with lighted candles, very solemn.

This place is just awesome. I was so choked by the size of it. It is a huge place with several buildings all along with Christ Jésus. You have to see this at least one time. It made my day. I even had the chance to go to the mass. It was so cool to be there. Awesome
Thomas G — Google review
The Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is a remarkable place of devotion and worship. The temples here are modern, spacious, and filled with a sense of peace. The city itself revolves around the pilgrims, with plenty of hotels and restaurants nearby. If you are Catholic, this is a truly special place to visit and reflect. If you’re not, you may prefer exploring some of Portugal’s older and more traditional churches, which offer a different kind of historical and architectural charm.
Murillo P — Google review
This place is very special to us. Is a place of pilgrimage and prayer but also recreation. Easy to access, has a huge parking area close to the church. Stunning place.
Alexandra L — Google review
Gigantic complex, radiating power and size. Not much religiosity in my humble opinion, but for the never-ending queue to the reliquary (even in November). Awe-inspiring but it felt more mass-touristy than spiritual (again in my personal opinion)
Tony B — Google review
I visited the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima in Portugal's central region. This sacred site, built near Cova da Iria where three children witnessed Marian apparitions in 1917, includes the Chapel of the Apparitions and grand basilicas. The vast esplanade hosts pilgrimages, with peaceful gardens and museums recounting the history and miracles. It felt profoundly spiritual and moving, a place of faith and reflection. A must-see for anyone seeking inspiration!

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima is a significant religious site and pilgrimage destination in Portugal. It commemorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary to three children in 1917. The basilica features a tower and intricate reliefs, drawing millions of visitors annually. Located near Lisbon, it is considered one of the major Catholic sanctuaries globally.
A beautiful basilica; we hadn't realized upon entering that the remains of the shepherd children are actually interred here. there were headstones and sculptures to either side of the altar. They were clearly marked so it was easy to see them. The basilica itself was very bright and quiet. A nice place to pray. There were lots of small stained glass windows up above that were really beautiful.
Jennifer C — Google review
Feeling so blessed to have visited this most holy place. We were lucky enough to be there for mass which was celebrated outside. There were also baptisms happening inside. The area where candles are lit is very intense. It’s ok to BYO candle. You can also get them there. Huge line but moved quickly.
Melanie Z — Google review
It's a beautiful basilica. A huge architectural beauty. It's cool and calm inside the Basilica. It would be wise to have a guide to visit the total complex to understand and enjoy. Otherwise you can also get a small leaflet from reception to get an understanding about the place. It's a huge complex with all the convenience.
Rajat C — Google review
This basilica is there 3 children saw a vision of the Virgin Mary. They saw it on the 13th day of the month several times. On this spot the basilica was built but it was quite late. It was finished 1953. Even though it is classically inspired inside it is quite plainly decorated and not as large as the other modern basilica o the site. There is a marble pathway that leads from the top of the square to the church, and penitents travel down this pathway on their knees whilst praying and sending their requests. Inside the sculptures for the stations of the cross are quite modern.
G M — Google review
Amazing breathtaking place even for non believers. I was getting goosebumps all the time when I was there for some strange reason. So if anyone asks me what’s the best about Lisbon my answer will always Fatima 😍
Peter Ž — Google review
A holy place worth visiting celebrating the apparition in 1910 to the 3 little shepherd children. Access to the Basilica is via a lot of stairs or parking near the entrance is also an option. It's well decorated and renovated and looks like it is ready to receive a lot of visitors every day.
Cristina D — Google review
Immense and modern church which was completed in 2007 to accommodate the large number of pilgrims to Fatima. It bears no resemblance to the old Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, located at the opposite end of the complex. From the outside, this church appears cold and austere, but the interior surprises with its immense size and minimalist design. The basilica can accommodate nearly 9,000 people and is impressive by its size and crowd especially upon first entering.
Enjoy L — Google review
I review this as a non religious person. Fatima is a beautiful place FOR SURE. and i have visited it multiple times across my portugal trips. The reason I'm removing a star is because it used to be free. now you have to pay to go inside, which, in my opinion, should be based of voluntarism. There are a lot of souvenir shops in the area if you're interested. If you plan on staying a long time, bring a hat of some sorts as the shade is limited. Visited on a monday and it was a bit busy.

This was so much better than I had expected. It's fantastically done and very atmospheric with lights and decorations (one part is even a little scary...) Definitely 5 stars from me.

A unique explorative experience worth of anyone's attention. The museum strikes instantly with its incredible wax work and the time dedicated to construct and organise the museum. It holds historical importance as it was where Francisco and Jacinda were baptized. The church features a simple yet lovely design with a beautiful main altar and side chapels, along with a charming baptismal font. Restaurant
Restaurante Tia Alice, located just over 2 km from the shrine in an inconspicuous old house with French windows, is a renowned traditional restaurant in Portugal. The eponymous chef was recently honored by the country's head of state. Since 1988, this Michelin Guide-listed restaurant has been serving delicious and authentic Portuguese dishes.
This is a wonderful Portuguese restaurant with high quality dishes. Many of the dishes are for two persons so be prepared to share. We recommend the sea bass and monk fish rice and the shrimp with rice. The veal is also very render. The desserts are all amazing but the sheep's milk cheese is fantastic. Great coffee, good wine. It is very difficult to make a reservation as the restaurant has one phone number and they want people to make reservations between 10-noon, so the phone line is constantly busy. At the restaurant people without bookings flood the lobby so the wait staff are constantly telling people that seatings are 12:30 and 14:30 so it is distracting to the service. Meanwhile we had to wait for our order to be taken then again to pay the bill. So it's a great meal if you can get a booking.
Rhicke J — Google review
I was there a few years ago. Tried to book again to see if it was only a one off bad experience, but wasn’t able to book. Food is okay. Restaurant environment is great, very aesthetically pleasing. However the service is not great and it’s impossible to get a reservation. Your money is better spend elsewhere, where it’s appreciated.
Mariana S — Google review
The restaurant is nicely decorated but I believe it is way to expensive for the food you get. The food is nice, well cooked but not that extraordinary to pay 25 euros per person. We only ordered bacalhau with shrimp and bread.
Sara V — Google review
I recently visited Tia Alice in Fátima, Portugal, a restaurant often described as one of the best in the area. Perhaps that reputation comes from the days of the original owner, but unfortunately, my experience didn’t live up to it. The starter, melon with ham, was the highlight of the meal. Fresh, seasonal melon made it simple but very enjoyable. Sadly, everything after that was a letdown. The casserole was especially disappointing: just a couple of small pieces of pork mixed with mostly cabbage. To make things worse, the pork contained cartilage, which meant having to discreetly spit it out at the table, not exactly pleasant. The atmosphere also left much to be desired. The dining room was brightly lit, more like sitting in a kitchen than in a cozy restaurant. The cave-like design might seem interesting at first glance, but in reality, it echoed with the sound of chairs scraping across the stone floor, which was jarring throughout the meal. The noise of children running around added to the impression that we were eating in a playground rather than a fine restaurant. In the end, the setting was unpleasant, the food underwhelming, and much of the meal was left untouched.
André M — Google review
Excellent service and very tasteful dishes. A mandatory stop with you're crossing the area.
Rodrigo H — Google review
Always a please this amazing experience in Tia Alice. They have normally two rounds for lunch so book in advance. The quality of the food here is just surreal. Good atmosphere as well so this is a must go in Fatima. Must try bolo do convento as dessert.

Excellent place to have exquisite home made Portuguese food. The best restaurant near the Santuario de Fátima to enjoy a delicious Portuguese plate. The place looks like a cave, I’m in love with the chandeliers and the simple decoration of the restaurant. Don’t hesitate to order the açorda de peixe, is the BEST! You won’t regret it.
Alexandra P — Google review
First time with the family during Christmas eve. We ordered the bacalhau with cheese gratin, duck with rice (took 30 min to make), veal and the almond convent cake. Everything was good (leans a bit saltyto to the taste) except for the cake, which was way too sweet. Altogether the meal came to be around 100 euro between 6 people so it's good for special occasion. We didn't reserve a seat and it.didn't take too long for us to get a seat. Service was top notch.

Francisco and Jacinta's House holds historical significance as the birthplace of the young shepherds who reportedly witnessed apparitions of the Lady of the Rosary in Fatima, Portugal. The house, located just 200 meters from Lucia's residence, was acquired by the Shrine in November 1996 and subsequently reconstructed. This site is a key pilgrimage destination for those interested in the events that unfolded during May to October 1917.
Place of history & significance for a Roman Catholic. It makes one understand the simplicity and humble life of the shepherds.

The house is so small it makes you appreciate even more the blessings of having a home with all the conveniences and comfort at home. It helps you imagine their life back in time and what they went through during the time of the apparitions. Entrance is free but you have the opportunity to give a donation.

The Interactive Museum - The Miracle of Fatima is a virtual and interactive experience that takes visitors on an unforgettable journey through the history and legends of Fatima, Portugal. Through cutting-edge multimedia technology such as holograms and 4D displays, the museum recreates the early 20th-century apparitions of the Angel of Portugal and Lady to three young shepherds, as well as the Miracle of the Sun.
This was a great way to start my trip to Fatima. It reminded me of how amazing the story of the Shepherd children of Fatima is and I also learned a few things! The guide, Sarah, was amazing. So kind, knowledgeable, and passionate. You get to experience was the apparitions were like, understand the depth of doubt and disbelief the children went through, learn the context of what was going on in the world at the time, and virtually experience the miracle of the Sun. I highly recommend visiting!

An absolute gem. What a wonderful presentation of the story with multimedia and 4D elements! Our guide (Rita) was knowledgable, kind and patient. The exhibit was engaging and meaningful but not overwhelming. Our kids (7, 10 and 12) really enjoyed it, as did we. Would highly recommend for anyone travelling to Fatima who would like to get an overview of the significance of the place.

Lucia's House in Portugal is the birthplace and childhood home of Lucia de Jesus, one of the three children who encountered the Blessed Virgin Mary. Located in Aljustrel, near the Shrine of Fatima, this historic house has been transformed into a museum showcasing exhibits that depict peasant life. The backyard still features the fig trees where the young shepherds used to play and seek refuge from pilgrims and curious visitors. It was here that the first interrogations of the seers took place.
It's a fabulous experience for Catholics. I highly recommend your visit to this place.

São Francisco is a place of great historical and religious significance. It gained importance after three young shepherds witnessed apparitions of Lady of the Rosary, leading to its recognition by the Church in 1930. This event transformed the village, eventually elevating it to town status in 1977 and city status in 1997. In addition to its religious heritage, São Francisco also offers excellent food and hospitality for visitors to enjoy.
The food was delicious, however the service was a bit slow. The waitress was really sweet and helpful.

The Museum of the Sanctuary of Fatima is a must-visit attraction in Fatima, Portugal. Situated within the Sanctuary of Fatima, it provides an intriguing look into the history and importance of Fatima as a religious pilgrimage destination. The museum is dedicated to the 1917 apparitions of the Virgin Mary and their profound impact on pilgrims worldwide.
Visiting the Museum of the Sanctuary of Fátima is like stepping into a fascinating blend of history, spirituality, and art. Nestled within the sprawling Sanctuary complex in Fátima, Portugal, the museum offers a deep dive into one of the most captivating religious stories of the 20th century. During our visit, we were guided through the museum with an informative walkthrough, which provided a comprehensive understanding of the history and significance of Fátima. The knowledgeable guides enriched our experience by offering detailed explanations of the exhibits and sharing insights into the events of 1917 and their impact on the Catholic faith. The museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in exploring the rich history of Fátima. It not only offers a chance to learn about the past but also provides a space for reflection and contemplation, making it an essential stop for both pilgrims and tourists alike.
Manoj R — Google review
The museum is worth a visit and costs only 2 euros. It has many religious gifts and articles like gifts from people and Popes. It has the bullet hit to Pope John Paul II. It tells the history of the shrine.
Stanly W — Google review
The Museum is a must see while you are here! We loved the video that told the story of Our Lady of Fatima and the 3 shepherd children. Then to see all of the amazing artifacts was incredible! We especially loved seeing the original crown with the bullet that was pulled from Pope St. John Paul II after the assassination attempt on his life. There were things from all over the world that had been donated, several from JPII himself. There were relics, beautiful monstrances, crucifixes, rosaries, chalices and more! The entire tour wasn't too long either, it left plenty of time to still observe other things. They also made sure to give you a tour in your specific language, which was so helpful! I'm not sure if the video is offered in other languages though, but there was subtitles that i would guess could be changed depending on what language you speak! We loved our tour and the lovely sister who was our guide. Worth it for sure!

The Sanctuary of Fatima Museum was established in 1955. The Museum has two permanent exhibitions – "Fatima Light and Peace" and the House-Museum in Aljustrel – and organizes temporary exhibitions that present pilgrims and visitors to Fatima with material evidence related to the message of Fatima, the development of the Sanctuary, and the spread of devotion to Our Lady of Fatima around the world.
Tobiasz R — Google review
The exposition it's ok. The crown of the statue of the Virgin Mary with the bullet that hit the Pope John Paul II is the best thing. The documentary movie is very weak.
Serban C — Google review
We were given a tour in English by the lovely sister Giacinta. What a marvelous experience we had in this museum! Amongst the very many beautiful things to see the 3 highlights for me were the monstrance donated by the Polish community with fragments of meteorites and a fragment of the moon, to signify that Christ is the king of Heaven and Earth; the crown of Mary with the bullet from the attempted assassination of John Paul II and the rosary made out of fragments of the Berlin Wall ("pray for peace..."). This was our very first stop in Fatima, and Sr Giacinta was able to really set the mood for our little family trip/pilgrimage, helping us to really enter into this marvelous place which is Fatima. Perhaps the thing that really touched my heart is how everything in Fatima, and this museum is no exception, is done out of a desire to serve and evangelize, and not to just make money!
Ismaele C — Google review
The Museum of Our Lady of Fátima, located at the Sanctuary of Fátima in Portugal, serves as a spiritual and historical center dedicated to the Marian apparitions reported by three shepherd children in 1917. This museum showcases a rich collection of religious artifacts, photographs, and personal items connected to the events of Fátima, including the lives of the visionaries—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta. Visitors can explore exhibits that narrate the story of the apparitions, the messages conveyed by the Virgin Mary, and their profound global impact on Catholic devotion. The museum also highlights the role of Fátima in 20th-century Church history, especially its connection to world events such as World War II and the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II, which he believed was foretold in the Third Secret of Fátima. The museum thus offers both a devotional and educational experience, drawing pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike.

This is a nice bronze statue of Pope John Paul II that commemorates is pilgrimage to Fatima in 1982, just one year after the failed assassination of his life back in Vatican City. The statue depicts John Paul II with his left hand over his heart and about to kneel in prayer to the image of Our Lady of Fatima.
