Parque Dom Carlos I is a serene and picturesque park located in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. Named after King Carlos, the park offers a delightful combination of art, history, and nature. It features beautifully sculpted gardens, charming ponds inhabited by swans and ducks, and elegant statues that celebrate Portugal's cultural heritage.
Beautiful park! It feels so abundantly natural and organic! Unfortunately we no longer make parks this way which is unfortunate, but it’s why we have to cherish the most the ones that are like this! It felt so peaceful, sitting and look over the lake. Also has one of the most interesting buildings I have seen, but unfortunately as a lot of others in Portugal it’s abandoned and in a bad shape…

Nice place to walk, enjoy the nature and beautiful lake with birds, two couples of swans 🦢 and peacock 🦚

My friend told me that every month of August there's an event at this park. More foods and items to buy and in the late afternoon there's a band that you can enjoy while eating sandwiches etc. You can bring your pets and there is also a playground for children.
Gina G — Google review
A great place for a walk or a picnic. They have a beautiful garden full of birds and flowers. There is also small row boats for hire which give you a great view of the park.
Harri F — Google review
Parque Dom Carlos is filled with giant old trees that keep it cool in the summer. The lake offers plenty of bird watching and relaxation time. There's a museum and 2 restaurants, plus who can resist the peacocks. With plenty of walking paths, you can get your exercise while stopping to smell the roses in the rose garden. During the summer, into the Christmas holiday loads of events both free and paid for the family. Concerts, festivals, food, and fun. It's a wonderful place for people watching or just relaxing, a beautiful edition to the town.
Heidi M — Google review
Stunning park! This is an absolute must visit when it comes to having a picnic or even feeding all the animals some bread! It was a really fun experience that left me happy at the end of the day.
Michael B — Google review
Nice park, could use some maintance. Has some facilities and cafe’s.
Maarten L — Google review
A lovely green park that is home to a monthly flea market on the second Sunday of each month. Serene and cooling, with benches under the shady foliage of the old trees and views of the waterscape. A nice break from the daily hustle and bustle and the heat of the day. A playground keeps the kiddos occupied and happy. Nice!

Museu de José Malhoa is a traditional venue located in the beautiful Park D. Carlos in Caldas da Rainha, showcasing the works of the prominent Naturalist painter, Jose Malhoa. The museum houses a collection of his paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints depicting various subjects such as portraits, landscapes, and everyday farming life.
This charming museum in Caldas da Rainha invites you to immerse yourself in the beauty of Portuguese art, highlighting the remarkable contributions of José Malhoa and Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro. Malhoa, a prominent figure in Portuguese Naturalism, is renowned for captivating works like “The Drunks” and “Fado,” which bring to life vibrant scenes and subjects. Furthermore, the museum's collection gracefully extends into the enchanting D. Carlos I Park, making for an inspiring visit.

This is the first Portuguese building that was built with the purpose to be a museum. It has an exquisite collection of art, mainly paintings.

This museum was quite an unexpected positive surprise. Some very nice paintings, terracota sculptures and other pieces of art from the 19th and 20th Century. There’s José Malhoa, Bordalo Pinheiro, Abel Manta, and several other artists and it is well worth a visit. Free entry if you are a resident in Portugal with tax number.

A lovely little gallery well worth an hour to visit. It's offers a great insight into Portuguese art at the turn of the 20th century, particularly Naturalism, the work of Malhoa and his contemporaries. Also take time to wonder around the surrounding park which is dotted with sculptures.

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, also known as the Igreja Matriz das Caldas da Rainha, is a fascinating Portuguese national monument with a rich history dating back to the late 1400s. Designed by Mateus Fernandes, a renowned master of the Manueline style, this church features surviving decorative elements such as intricate ribbonwork and floral motifs on its vault.
We didn't go inside as we went there for an outdoor performance of "Os Miseros". Loved everything about it: the setting, the talent, the atmosphere 😍

(Translated by Google) This church, located in Caldas da Rainha, is part of the Thermal Hospital complex, founded by Queen Leonor in 1485. Its origins lie in a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the People and connected to the hospital to provide spiritual support to the sick. The church dates back to 1500 and its pre-Manueline design was designed by Mestre Mateus Fernandes, who was one of the architects of the Batalha Monastery. The nave of the church is particularly noteworthy, as it is covered in beautiful 17th century tile panels. The bell tower is topped by two sculptures representing the Archangel Gabriel and Our Lady of the Annunciation. It is classified as a National Monument. (Translated by Google) Completed in the early 16th century, this church was designed to provide spiritual support to the patients of the hospital with which it was connected. Built in Manueline style, the church was recently restored. The highlight of the exterior is the quadrangular bell tower, topped by 4 clocks on each side, with the coat of arms of Portugal on the east side and 16th-century sculptures on the west side. The gargoyles are also very interesting. The interior of the church is usually closed, and it was only possible to enter at the time of the celebration of mass, at 9:00, and it was not possible to properly admire its tiled interior. (Original) De construção concluída no início do séc.

(Translated by Google) A truly special experience! We had the opportunity to attend a weekday mass in this charming church, located almost on the seafront—a serene and inspiring setting that invites reflection and inner peace. The church's interior is beautifully decorated with traditional Portuguese tiles, which tell stories and add a unique artistic and cultural touch to the sacred space. The service was welcoming and intimate, perfect for those seeking a moment of spirituality away from the tourist crowds. Undoubtedly, a place worth visiting for both its beauty and the tranquil atmosphere it exudes.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of ceramics from Portugal and around the world, spanning from ancient artifacts to contemporary creations. Beautiful museum extremely well preserved. The history of the tradition of ceramics in this city is well documented and the pieces exposed are incredible. The house itself, a former palace, is a gem, with beautiful gardens. Really worth to visit when in town.

We decided to visit this little museum on a whim because it was raining one day. We were pleasantly surprised by the collection. Housed in a historical manor, and surrounded by garden. Worth the visit if you’re in the area!

The museum itself is beautiful, with a lovely garden. The ceramics shown are interesting and will learn you more about Portugal. The guide I met had a lot of knowledge and passion!

It was okay, nothing to write home about. An old house filled with old tiles and pottery. No information about processes or history. I was amazed by this item though. It said it was a candle holder. But my attention was captured by the amazing amount of detail in the tiny figures. Absolutely fascinating.

Portuguese restaurant
Solar dos Amigos is a historic restaurant located in the small village of Guisado, just a short drive from Caldas da Rainha. The establishment has been serving traditional Portuguese dishes for 48 years, with owner and chef Dona Luisa Nunes at the helm. Specialties include fried eels, rabbit stew, and codfish campino. The rustic restaurant features bullfighting decor and is a favorite lunch spot for many visitors.
Absolutely fantastic! Saturday lunch at its best. Food: at Solar dos Amigos was amazing — delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. Service was excellent too; the staff were friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Atmosphere: quaint very typical Portuguese. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a great meal and warm hospitality!

Quaint restaurant with a unique décor. The food is traditional Portuguese cuisine. The portions are massive, so always ask for advice before ordering. The cod fritters were delicious. There is a big selection of desserts as well. The restaurant is big but is very popular, so is advisable to reserve a table. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Dinner out in our little town in the Portuguese countryside. This little restaurant has been here 50 years and ranked most popular for travellers around the world. Now we know why! Thank you to Paula and Joanna for a great evening and owner Luisa for an unforgettable meal; topping it off with a shot of ginjinha 🍒
Julie P — Google review
This restaurant is more of a destination but a lovely place to drop by. Feels like you are entering the home of a family member. You start by walking past the grill where you see and smell the amazing meats. The back patio is nice but be warned, there are lots of flies. The portions are large, for sharing. I loved the side dishes that are accompanied with your main courses. The spare ribs were succulent. Better, in my opinion, than the cod. Save room for nice desserts. Tip: Dog friendly indoors and outdoors!
Mark R — Google review
We have been there several times before already. It is always a treat in terms of service, especially the ambitions people there and of course the owner itself. Yesterday we have been serviced by a hectic and very stressful lady, she was talking and serving so fast that everything felt like clearance. Also the reservation wasn’t booked in their books ( not the first time that the name couldn’t be found), and also the small things which tasted world class before were mediocre, the fries way too greasy. We will be back of course but the price is quite high for the region. Maybe they should focus more on quality of food and service instead of number of people to be cleared.
MikeAir1 — Google review
Great place: nice, welcoming, pleasant, ... Excellent food. Great staff. Lots of great deserts to choose from. In the end you have a great surprise! Make reservation, otherwise you may not be able to eat. many customers.
Patricia L — Google review
This is a great spot to gather family and friends for a feast of the best portuguese cuisine has to offer! Tradition is literally all over the walls of the restaurant, giving you a cosy and homy feeling. And the food.... my friends the food is the star of the show. D. Luisa manages the place with efficiency and kindness. All the staff was helpful and kind! Portions were huge, e ought to bring home for a second meal. Warm bread, and corn bread that was to die for. A huge selection of desserts, and at the end a complimentary licour with butter biscuits. We left absolutely full to the brim and ready for a nap! Thanks you and we will definitely see you again!

Surrounded by beautiful art nouveau buildings adorned with traditional Portuguese ceramic tiles, this market is a treasure trove of regional products and local delicacies.
Quality of the produce is unbelievable, I have never seen fruits and vegetables so vibrant, lush and fresh! This market has cheese, fresh flowers, ham, bread, cakes and the loveliest vendors. There are also many coffee stops along the way. Just minutes away from the beautiful Caldas park 💕

This is a must go if you’re in the area. It’s a vibrant market for local residents yet you will see a lots of tourists as well. Mondays are not the best day.

I'm not sure if it was because it was Monday. About 1/2 the stalls were empty. That said, everything was fresh and clean, and the vendors were helpful. Not everyone speaks English, but I was able to get by on French and pantomime. If you're looking for fresh veggies and fruit, I would start here before going to the supermarket.

Smallish market place to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese. Can be busy but still worth it - best place to buy fresh ingredients. There are cafes around it, a few hours in a good weather goes by just like that.

Mostly fruit and veg. Good choices. Hat and bag and nik naks stall. Dried flowers stall. Craft stall and wind chimes and bracelets. Lovely ladies worked those 2 stalls. Also visited the craft market there on Saturday night. Some lovely items, unusual jewellery, candles, pottery, prints etc.

Fresh produce from around Caldas da Rainha. Colourful tents with a variety of products from flowers, veggies, fruits, nuts and jams. There is snack shop with refreshments and outdoor sitting. Saturdays are best as there are more sellers. Close to the town centre and the D. Carlos park, making it a perfect place for a quick break during the day visit.

Museu do Ciclismo, located in an elegant Art Nouveau building overlooking Parque Dom Carlos, is a captivating museum that showcases the rich history of cycling in Portugal. Managed by the city and various national cycling associations, it houses a remarkable collection of exhibits, including items from historic races such as the Porto to Lisbon race in 1911 and the early editions of Volta a Portugal from 1927 onwards.
Very interesting exhibition of Portuguese military bikes and road cycling history. Free entry. Very helpful and friendly lady accompanied us and explained many points in English for us. Highlight of the day. 👍

Not very interesting, unless you're into the history of Portuguese road bike racing from the '70's and '80's. Museum has only two floors, and the 1st (ground floor) is full of old movie projectors and movie posters. The second floor has the bicycle stuff, but most of it is road racing stuff about Porruguese riders. Cool if that's your thing, but we found it to be less than exciting...
Phillip F — Google review
Very nice experience and well explained by a competent lady. Highlights of cycling in Portugal over the last 125 years. We got to know about the great sportsmen, their outfit and their success. But do not miss the exhibition of the history of cinema! The entry is free of charge 🤗

Pretty much the only interesting thing about Caldas aside from the Sunday market at Praça da Fruta. That being said, this museum is very specific: its focus is on early Portuguese Army bicycle brigades and the history of road cycling in Portugal. Everything is in Portuguese so I unfortunately can't say I learned anything (but I would've liked to). Definitely some neat relics on display, but hardly comprehensive in terms of cycling history. Also, the entire first floor was devoted to an exhibit on Portuguese cinema (also only in Portuguese) so the actual cycling portion takes 45 minutes or less to see.

The decorative pieces are quite expensive, many of them not affordable for Portuguese people with lower incomes. The utilitarian pieces are more moderately priced and affordable. It is possible to buy pieces with minor defects, with good discounts. The service is usually friendly. I go to the store very regularly, as I like to follow the production of new pieces and it is one of my favorite places to do my Christmas shopping. Shopping
La Vie Caldas da Rainha is a small, old-school shopping center located in the city center. Despite receiving fewer visitors than in the past, it houses several businesses that have managed to survive. The upper floor features a food court with tasty and reasonably priced food, while the lower floor is more of a supermarket area. In between, there are shops for fashion, jewelry, and various items. Additionally, there is a cinema inside and a parking lot available.
Nice place to visit, specially this street that leads to outdoor market. I recommend it. FREE Live music (Fado), nide atmosphere.

I didn't like the shopping center! There used to be a children's Zara, they removed it... the food courts on the third floor are empty... nothing new has appeared in this shopping center in 3 years, it's only getting worse, it would be better if they opened new stores that are really needed in this shopping center

Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor is a historic institution founded in 1484 by Queen Leonor, wife of King Joao II, after being cured here herself. It is one of the oldest thermal hospitals globally and still operational today. The building is located next to a pond and park, with markets nearby. The spa utilizes the therapeutic properties of its hypersaline and sulfurous waters, with the highlight being the queen's pool where she bathed.
It was our first time at the thermal baths and the experience was amazing. Walking through the hospital was going back in time, the building carries so much history. The staff was welcoming and caring, explaining everything with gentleness. And the massage under the water was heavenly 💜💜💜

I’ve been coming here for a few years and I find the spa services amazing and fairly affordable. This year there is a lack of attentiveness in the after spa lounge. They have removed the teas and hot water. Although they still provide regular water, the container was not sanitary and not cleaned properly. Very disappointed in the decline of relaxing attributes that room provided to clients.

It’s a pity I have to give only 2 stars to this location. The building is very beautiful from a distance, however, it’s is almost completely destroyed. The park outside it is poorly taken care of and very dirty. The local municipality should invest in renovation as it has a great potential to getting paying visitors to the city.

Reserva Natural Local do Paul de Tornada is a lovely nature reserve that provides a sense of being in the wild despite its proximity to urban areas. It serves as a connection between Caldas and Tornada and offers opportunities to observe various bird species, with the possibility of spotting mammals as well. The area may require more maintenance due to fallen trees and flooded paths, but it remains a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts.
This is a true hidden treasure for bird lovers! Bring binoculars and a good camera, because there is so much to see here. Truly glad that we went here. Hope it stays hidden because it would ruin it if too many people came here.
Joshua W — Google review
So good to be in a wild environment, yet within easy distance of Caldas da Rainha. The path was quite overgrown, but we walked round the whole reserve on 15th September 2025 in 1.5 hours without hurrying. The reserve staff were very pleasant and helpful. They apologised for the state of the path - they hadn't been able to use machinery due to the risk of fire. Saw osprey, grey heron, common waxbill etc and heard firecrest and Cetti's warbler.

Lovely place that lets you feel like you're in nature, even though it's in a relatively built up area connecting Caldas to Tornada. 26Jardim da Água - composição artística de Ferreira da Silva

Sculpture museum
Jardim da Água - composição artística de Ferreira da Silva is a unique and curious place that's worth a visit, despite being somewhat neglected due to vandalism. This massive sculpture park was the largest work of renowned Portuguese sculptor Ferreira da Silva, resembling the dreamy modernist style of Parque Güell in Barcelona.
A truly curious place that is worth visiting, even if it is in a slightly worse-for-wear state thanks to unthinking Vandals. It is a massive work of sculpture that's pretty much constitutes its own little Park. It was the biggest work undertaken by one of Portugal's most renowned sculptors, Ferreira da Silva who died in 2016 leaving behind a substantial artistic heritage. It reminds me a bit of parque guell in Barcelona, obviously not built to that scale, but with the same dreamy modernist Style. It is hitting the way at the back of the Royal Palace and indeed, before I I did this listing, most people reacted to this Garden of water there , so if you are inclined, you can check other people's opinions there. One thing I should ask is that, despite the name, there is no water in the garden. I believe it's named after the nearby mineral wells that gives the town its name. All in all, well worth a visit, something incredibly different to everything around and yet a testament to the fact that this town is renowned for sculpture.

(Translated by Google) A brilliant experience that proves that people are capable of not only creating something beautiful, but also destroying it with their own hands. I read that the mayor’s office was unable to allocate 22,500 euros for the restoration of the amazingly beautiful fountain complex. And this is the mayor’s office of one of the regions that sold a huge number of golden visas, which brought in a lot of taxes. In loving memory of Ferreira da Silva. Shame on those who destroy and do not preserve. (Original) Блестящий опыт, доказывающий, что люди способны не только создать нечто прекрасное, но и разрушить это своими собственными руками. The building is interesting, but the large informative plaques of information on the walls are not translated. I’m sure the history would be extremely fascinating, but I did not want to take the time to type everything into Google Translate. There are paper signs near the smaller displays that do have just an English translation; but it is so easy to print out translated copy now, it would be just as easy to add additional language translations. The museum should print out re-usable pamphlets of the translated history information in many languages to give to visitors when they enter - or at least be able to print out a translation for a nominal fee upon request.
Cindy F — Google review
It was very disappointing. The building is very nice and there are some nice pieces in the museum, but almost nothing translated to English and it is very difficult to see any logic or story line with the way things presented there. It is more entertaining and educating to go to flee market than to this museum. The only positive about this museum is the lady selling tickets who is very nice and friendly

We loved it! It was pretty much private as we were the only ones there during that time. Rita received us and gave us the tour, she was incredibly nice and she made our tour even more special. We were able to try a very distinct orange wine and some other amazing options. My only recommendation is that you start selling the olives as well cause they were delicious! We liked that it is an organic and small winery as opposed to a big and commercial one. Highly recommend a visit!

We had a lovely afternoon with friends yesterday, doing a tour and wine tasting at Vinhos Cortém. Our group thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Not only was it very interesting, but also Rita was really charming and witty. In our wine tasting, Rita described each wine's composition and history, to help us understand their bouquet and flavors better. We enjoyed all the wines we tried, but the Pinot was beloved by all. What a great way to spend a hot summer afternoon: sitting at table in the shade and sipping delicious wines with a lovely view. We will be back again!

Amazing winery with the nicest staff! We did tasting of 6 wines with Rita, who is a delight. We were fortunate to meet the owner, Christopher Price, who provided great historical context about the wines and the region. Update: We returned a few days later as this is our favorite winery in Portugal. The winery was closed as we didn't have a reservation however we called and one of the workers, Silvio, came from out of the vineyard to help us. He was immensely knowledgeable about the wines, explaining more about the Cab Sav and the Cab and Merlot blend, one of our favorites. This is one of the best wineries we've visited and look forward to returning again soon!

(Translated by Google) In Caldas da Rainha, ceramics are everywhere. Strolling through this Portuguese town of around 53,000 inhabitants, you will come across workshops, museums and industries which perpetuate know-how developed over 500 years. Here, craftsmanship and innovation interact, supported by the Higher School of Arts and Design and also by the MOLDA biennial, which celebrates the richness of the art of ceramics every two years. At the top of the city, a group of four museums with free admission tell this story, while the other three located on the edge of the park reveal other facets. Since 2019, Caldas da Rainha has been recognized by UNESCO as a creative city in “Crafts & Folk Arts”. Also known for its thermal waters, it combines royal heritage and discreet elegance. Anchored in a contemporary and artistic dynamic seeking a more active development of its half-neglected architectural heritage, it is, in my opinion, a city with strong potential for the future if there are joint budgetary investments. There is work!

One of the museums located in the town Square where you can find seven different artists composed of ceramics, sculpture, and paintings. Antonio’s collection is Weisband including his sculptures/ busts/ free form arts to his religious collections of statues from 15 century. Oh museums in the square day are complementary with no admission. And walking outside of the Square, they are filled with arts and expressive sculptures all over. I’m having the most relaxing and joyful time in this small town.
