Historical place
Château de Chenonceau is a stunning 16th-century chateau that spans a river and houses an impressive collection of tapestries and Old Master paintings. Its history includes being gifted to Diane de Poitiers by Henry II, then taken over by Queen Catherine de' Medici after his death. The chateau's architecture reflects the changes in ownership and circumstances over the years, from its origins as a Medieval fortress to its transformation into an elegant residence.
This was a absolutely breathtaking castle. They have a huge history both on who built it and who stayed there. They have audio guides and live guide tours and it is not that expensive. They have various gardens around including a labyrinth in the garden which is quite big. They grow their own vegetables and a large variety of flowers that they use to decorate within the walls of the castle. Very pretty. We enjoyed the tour very much.
Drífa R — Google review
Simply magical place. Among all the other Chateau's quite unique because of its location. The exhibitions are nice and it is not overwhelming. The gardens and parks around are beautiful, with plenty of benches to sit down and relax. I recommend doing a quick wine tasting in the wine cellar, maybe not the most engaging or informative but still a nice experience. This place is definitely worth the trip.
Gerard P — Google review
Visiting Château de Chenonceau was a wonderful experience. The castle is elegant and romantic, beautifully set over the river, and surrounded by lovely gardens. I loved the charm and history of the place — it feels both graceful and full of life. Truly one of the most beautiful castles on the Loire Valley.
Mirela P — Google review
This chateau was the best chateau we have visited in France. The restoration, presentation and information available was first class. So much history from one location. Kind of overwhelming as you slowly self-guide around. Recommend Autumn as the time to visit with trees in their gold, red, and orange phases.
James J — Google review
Probably one of the most beautiful castles in the Loire valley. The grounds are simply magical with gorgeously kept gardens and the castle is stunning for photos against the reflection of the river. You can spend a couple hours exploring and they also offer a large restaurant or small cafes/food trucks for coffee or a sandwich throughout. Great place to picnic too! Nice gift shop available for a souvenir.
Alan Y — Google review
One of the most spectacular chateaus in the Louire Valley. A rich, storied history, amazing views, and beautiful gardens make this a must see place to visit! Seriously, come visit!
Jim R — Google review
Chenonceau Château is a beautiful chateau built 1513-1517 across the River Cher. It has a friendly atmosphere and elegant design. Walking around inside, you see its rich history with unique rooms like the Louis XIV drawing room, Catherine de Medici’s bedroom, and are magnificent. Spanning the river is a long impressive gallery. The kitchen would be the envy of any chef! The Medici gardens beside the chateau are tidy, peaceful, and carefully arranged with boxwood, roses, and lavender. The garden is made up of lawn panels around a circular pond, giving lovely views of the castle and its surroundings. It’s a great place to stroll and relax, making your visit even more special.
Joe B — Google review
In "recent" history the castle was exactly on the border of the occupied ( NAZI ) and the free zone during WWII. Through the gallery they managed to smuggle people across the river to their survival. The whole chateau was adorned with beatifull bouquets of fresh flowers. Further history of this legendary castle has been well documented. It's a must see if your in the area.

2Diane de Poitiers Garden

Garden
Diane de Poitiers Garden is a historic site located near Chateau de Chenonceau. After King Henry II's death, the castle was given to his favorite lady, Diane de Poitiers. She transformed the grounds with extensive flower and vegetable gardens, orchards of fruit trees, stone terraces, and four triangular layouts. Despite being Crown property, Diane effectively became the mistress of the castle through legal maneuvers in 1555.
This garden is beautiful and well maintained. From there one can enjoy a beautiful view across the river and to the castle.
Chrissi H — Google review
This is a beautiful, well maintained, sectioned garden with lovely landscaping and views of the chateau. Very much enjoyed walking the garden grounds, including the stretch up against the river where you can see boats approaching the chateau.
Brad — Google review
(Translated by Google) The Jardin de Diane de Poitiers is flowery, organized in the French style and very well maintained. It has three assets: a jet fountain in its center, its very large size and an alley overlooking it all around and allowing it to be admired from a higher point. Gorgeous ! Magnifique !
Cédric C — Google review
This magnificent garden was commissioned by the Chancellery, which was the residence of Catherine de Medici's Intendant. Two perpendicular paths and two others running diagonally delineate eight large triangles of lawn decorated with delicate santolina scrolls. The original fountain has been restored to its center, as it was in the time of Diane de Poitiers. The raised terraces, which protect the garden from the flooding of the Cher River, are adorned with basins and offer a view of shrubs, yews, spindle trees, boxwoods, and oleanders, which punctuate the design of the flowerbeds. More than a hundred standard hibiscuses bloom here in summer. Between these shrubs, flowerbeds emphasize the rigorous geometry of this garden. All around, climbing Iceberg roses adorn the walls supporting the terraces. More imposing than the Catherine de Medici garden, it allows you to discover the eastern facade of Chenonceau.

(Translated by Google) The Gardens of Château de Chenonceau are a vital part of its history and aesthetic, considered one of the most iconic horticultural masterpieces of France's Loire Valley. Designed and maintained by several powerful women throughout history, these gardens embody horticultural styles from the 16th to the 19th century, complementing the elegant architecture of the fortress. Spanning approximately seven hectares, they are divided into several themed areas, including the Garden of Diane de Poitiers, the Garden of Catherine de Medici, and the Labyrinth. The design philosophy of French castle gardens revolves around the core concept of "human mastery over nature." These gardens, often referred to as "French gardens" (Jardins à la française), differ significantly from the naturalistic style of English gardens. French gardens emphasize geometric symmetry, order, and grandeur, rather than spontaneity or naturalness. Designers employed precise mathematics and measurement to achieve these concepts through the following elements: ⦁ Symmetry and Axis: The gardens radiate a straight main axis centered on the castle, flanked by perfectly symmetrical designs, creating a sense of rigorous order. ⦁ Geometric Patterns: Flower beds, hedges, and lawns are manicured into various geometric shapes, such as squares, circles, and spirals, showcasing the beauty of human craftsmanship. ⦁ Visual Extension: Elements such as pools, canals, and tree-lined avenues create expansive views and blend the garden landscape with the distant forest or sky, creating a sense of grandeur.

Catherine de Médicis Garden is located at the Chateau de Chenonceau, a stunning castle with a rich history. The chateau was built in stages between 1513 and 1576, featuring a bridge and a two-storey gallery added by prominent architects of the French Renaissance. Initially gifted to Diane de Poitiers, she developed thriving farms on the estate to fund renovations and expansions of the chateau.
Well maintained, nice spot for overview picture of château.

One of the two lovely, manicured and laid out gardens on both sides of the chateau on the north bank of the river. In addition to this being a charming little garden to walk, there are nice views of the chateau for taking pictures from the Catherine of Medici garden as well.
