Villa Panza, an 18th-century mansion located in Varese, Italy, is a renowned destination for art enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Acquired by Count Giuseppe Panza di Biumo in 1956, the villa boasts an impressive collection of contemporary American art, making it a significant cultural landmark. The estate's Italian-style gardens provide a picturesque setting for visitors to explore and unwind.
Villa Panza offers a unique blend of contemporary art and historic charm. Set in an elegant 18th-century villa surrounded by lush gardens, the space showcases a remarkable collection of modern and minimalist artworks. The contrast between the historic architecture and the bold, varied installations creates a captivating dialogue between past and present—all within a serene, green oasis.

Amazing park and modern art collection. Especially the light installations are spectacular
Vidar H — Google review
An absolutely charming place. The villa itself is beautifully preserved, with a wonderful balance between its historic elegance and the contemporary art thoughtfully displayed throughout. It’s a joy to walk through each room, the curation is refined and full of personality. The gardens are equally delightful, with fruit trees and peaceful green corners that invite you to linger. We also had a lovely meal at the café, which made the whole visit feel even more special. Altogether, a colourful, uplifting experience, full of beauty, care, and quiet charm.
Mel P — Google review
Simply stunning both within the curated contemporary art housed within a stunning villa and the gardens outside.
Jo T — Google review
We absolutely loved our visit to Villa Panza in Varese. The artwork, design, and gardens are simply beautiful and inspiring at every turn. To make it even more special, a sweet little cat followed us along during our visit—she was just adorable! A truly magical experience. 🩶

What a fascinating place both inside and outside. We went mainly to see the modern American art. But found everything worth seeing. The grounds and garden are lovely. And the interior furnishings are spectacular. Then there are the surprising pieces of American pop art from the 60's intermixed throughout. The light installation across several rooms by Dan Flaviny was luminescentp and impossible to capture on photos. A delightful experience all the way around.

Beautiful expansive park with world class Art collection e.g. James Turrel. On site parking. Great spot to make a break during a road trip from Switzerland to Italy.

Villa Panza is a fantastic example of a restored 19th century Italian country villa. The interior is lovingly curated with modern art works whilst the formal gardens are stunningly manicured. The FIA's restoration and management of this property is commendable.

Sacro Monte di Varese, a 17th-century complex, is steeped in history and religious significance. Legend has it that St. Ambrose introduced the worship of the Virgin Mary to this mountain in the 4th century as a gesture of gratitude for a triumph over heretics. The site's ancient tower, once a military fortress, underscores its strategic importance. Recent excavations have unveiled remnants of churches dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries.
Visited 10 am on a Wednesday. Super quiet. Maybe saw 20 people over 5 hours. Bring solid shoes as the cobbles are rough on your feet. Bring drinks and solid snacks as the restaurants are overpriced with tiny servings. Views amazing. A 5 star experience not to be missed.
Gordon W — Google review
Really worth visiting but it's a long uphill walk. Great exercise and you can treat yourself to a drink or food when you reach the top if you think you've lost lots of calories on the way up. Lots of history, beautiful views. Finding a car parking space was a challenge but definitely worth the effort & stress.
David H — Google review
Sacro Monte is a world class experience not yet overrun by tourism, and unbelievably its free! The hour's walk from the carpark reveals the story of Jesus through 14 chapels with life sized vignettes created centuries ago. It gets steep in parts but there is a pebbled path the whole way. The view from the top is a fitting reward. A vernacular is available for those who are physically challenged. Catch the C Bus from Varese to Prima Capella (end destination). Pay 1.60 euros on board with coins or card.
Donna M — Google review
Just breathtaking. It's a holy town, a destination for pilgrimages for people around, and it's full of history and charmingly picturesque. I felt like Alice in Wonderland, walking through the winding stepped streets, finding its hidden secrets. We have driven all the way up by car, but beware, the parking is very limited, there might be around 50 parking spaces max for visitors. And the vistas from the top overlook the landscape for 20km around, it's magical!
Jack W — Google review
Great place to visit for the views & history. We got the bus (Line C) up from Varese town centre to the top of the hill then took the funicular up to Sacro Monte itself. Gorgeous views out over the hills, lakes & Varese itself. Lots of historic buildings & churches at the top. We walked back down the pilgrimage route passing the 14 chapels/shrines along the way. Well worth a visit.
Leonie P — Google review
Stunning Sacro Monte di Varese, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where we explore its beautiful chapels and breathtaking views. The Path of the Chapels is an uphill climb of about 2 kilometers (about 1.2 miles), though it feels much longer when you are walking it, as it zig-zags you up by 245 meters (about 804 ft.) and can be a little steep in places. Each chapel is frescoed inside, and sometimes outside, and filled with sculptures illustrating scenes from Jesus’ life.
George O — Google review
Amazing, dramatic - yet not too taxing - climb up via 14 elegant 17thC chapels on wide path to reach spectacular hilltop village based around convent. Incredible views across Varese lakes and heavily wooded hills and valleys. Stunning.

(Translated by Google) Historic villa surrounded by greenery, which houses a well-kept museum. The exhibition itinerary crosses different eras, from prehistory to the Renaissance, up to science and contemporary history. The collections are varied and well organised, ideal for both enthusiasts and families. A fascinating place that combines culture, history and nature. The most evocative room in my opinion is that of the butterflies and the mummy.

(Translated by Google) A very interesting museum located inside Villa Mirabello, with an entire section dedicated to the Castiglioni brothers, where films, artifacts, photos, and other items recount their experiences on various trips. The rest of the museum is also interesting, focusing in particular on the Varese area. The mummy is particularly interesting. The only drawback is that there is no air conditioning, and it was very hot inside, so if you want to visit calmly, you need at least a couple of hours. The price is more than fair. Outside, there is a beautiful, shaded park where you can take a relaxing stroll.

An old-fashioned archeo museum, all in Italian unfortunately. Divided into 5 sections: late-colonial African studies,Italian struggle for independence, Roman relics, prehistoric finds of Varese area and some natural studies like butterfly collection. We were the only guests in the entire museum and by the reaction of the staff, they were surprised to see any visitors there themselves. It's all interesting visually, but unfortunately it can't be enjoyed at its most because there is not a single English sentence in the entire museum, everything is Italian only. A bit of a shame. It's a bit of an old fashioned museum also, with tons of text and no interactive pieces. But for €5 it's worth a visit, overall.

Basilica di San Vittore Martire, situated in the historic center of Varese, is a significant religious site dedicated to San Vittore. Constructed between the 16th and 17th centuries, it features a blend of mannerism and baroque architecture with a neoclassical facade and a beautifully restored Bernascone bell tower. The interior houses valuable artworks by renowned artists such as Francesco Cairo, Nuvolone, Crespi, and Morazzone.
It's actually much more astonishing inside that its exterior might suggest. The interior is rich and ornate without being ostentatious. The ceiling is actually very interesting, I had trouble to assess whether the white figures were actually carved stuccos or only painted frescos on the ceiling. According to Wiki 'The basilica was built between the first half of the 16th and the 17th century on a previous church [site], perhaps from the 14th century'. Interior is actually baroque style.
Jack W — Google review
Beautiful church located in the hearth of Varese historical city centre. I am not rating this place 5 stars as the outside area is not well curated or monitored from local police and authorities. At the time of my visit, there were a baby gang with loud music - what a shame in front of a church. Where is the police???

A very pretty church in Varese. The interior justifies the plain exterior- offering beautiful frescos and sculptures. The bell tower is also very pretty.

At the end of your journey through Sacro Monte, a path lined with 14 chapels leads to Casa Museo Lodovico Pogliaghi. This old home of the artist has been transformed into a gallery showcasing his works and personal collection. The museum is filled with numerous treasures, including two Egyptian sarcophagi. Visitors are captivated by the unique architecture and diverse collection of art, sculpture, architectural pieces, glassware, and ceramics.
This museum has wonderful collection of the artifacts from all over the world and time. What if you could afford yourself to collect and buy such things? Isn’t amazing that some people do have power and will to preserve peace of arts that could disappear in the past? Must visit :-)

Casa Museo Ludovico Pogliaghi is a mesmerizing treasure trove where the artist’s own work blends seamlessly with his vast, eclectic collection. From ancient artifacts to Renaissance pieces and global art objects, the sheer variety and richness of styles take your breath away. Set in his former home-studio, it’s an inspiring journey through a lifetime of creativity and passion for art from around the world.

Fascinating and quirky villa with a diverse collection of art, sculpture, architectural pieces, glassware, ceramics and more. Great views from the Red room. Pretty Italian garden is small, but it's worth a good 1_2hours and can be combined with a visit to the chapels at the Sacre Monte Di Varese as the Museo is on the same site, near the top. Parking and snack bars also available at the top if you don't want to walk up from the bottom of the elevation.

Last week we visited the villa of Pogliaghi. It is a house in which the eyes never tire of looking. Behind the eclectic collection are numerous stories that open up new horizons for every curious visitor. We all found the museum staff extremely friendly and helpful, and we would like to thank her for her very exciting additional information.

We were so suprised by this house museum! I didn't expect this museum would be so rich in the collection and the architecture is so particular that I have never seen. I love so much the gate of Milan's Cathedral in the hall, the classic scene like pantheon, the building mixed with different languages but harmonious. Every detail tells his story, his passion and his unique personality. The staff were very friendly and were willing to tell us many things about the artist even if we arrived quite late.

This is an incredible place. Home, studio and personal museum of the artist Ludovico Pogliaghi, it is worth a trip. The palace gardens are a huge city park hidden behind the walled library. There's something for everyone- enjoy a sunny seat in front of the tiered formal garden, or a trip to the children's playground, a bar (with toilet access), fuelled mini cars (1.50 per ride) and even a mini railway. Worth spending an hour or two in Varese.

Varese is known for its stunning location nestled between a picturesque lake and two iconic mountains, the Sacro Monte and the Campo dei Fiori. The Sacro Monte holds significant cultural and religious importance, making it a must-visit destination in the area.
A wonderful and magical place- looks like something from the mediaeval period. With the fog yesterday it made such a magical effect.

History Museums
Museo Castiglioni is a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the travels and discoveries of the brothers Angelo and Alfredo Castiglioni, who were renowned travelers, archaeologists, and ethnologists. The museum showcases their findings, objects, photographs, and accounts of their journeys in an annex of Villa Toeplitz Varese.
This is how history is most effectively taught! A wonderful example of how authentic history and anthropology is communicated well, this museum set in the beautiful gardens of the Villa Toeplitz Is worth spending a full day in! The collection of artifacts and photographs are carefully curated to give the visitor a great sense of the adventure that the Castiglioni brothers had and their dedication to recording the cultures that they knew were disappearing. These are then brought to life with explanatory videos that deeply connects one with the material being exhibited. Besides the wonderful collection of prehistoric rock art (11,000 years old!) casts, what struck me most was the exhibit of the life of the Tuareg which is vividly conveyed by a diorama of a Tuareg tent with an explanation of all the items and their respective uses. We have all seen human mummies, but where else would one see a mummified camel? If one is lucky enough to arrive on days when Marco Castiglioni is in the museum, one will be treated to an experience of speaking to an enthusiastic and passionate storyteller. Marco manages to convey all the salient points of the cultures of the people without overly romanticising the lives of these tribes. Talking to Marco, one is immediately entranced by the anthropology of these tribes and saddened by the loss of diversity that accompanies progress. However the sadness is balanced by the knowledge that the fact that his father and uncle managed to capture many practices on film before they were lost. I am also extremely heartened by the existence of Marco who, with knowledgeable flair, conveyed to me a huge sense of interest in the subject of African anthropology. Words nor pictures will not replace what will be an unforgettable experience in this museum, so stop reading and get yourself to this unmissable experience in Varese. It is so much more than a "visit to a museum"!

Palazzo Mazzetti, also known as Pinacoteca Civica, is a historic 15th-century palace in Asti, Italy. It stands as a testament to the noble origins of the city and features wood & ivory artworks, Renaissance paintings, ancient coins & fabrics. The palace offers guided tours and workshops for children and houses M.A.G.M.A.X., the smallest museum of Minerals, Geology and Crystallography in Italy.
A wonderful gem to spend a few hrs in . There was an exhibition by the painter Carlo Carosso downstairs which is colourful and fun . The interior is Richly decorated in some of the rooms in Roccoco designs very flamboyant Angels, gods and gold. In others it looks stripped back . My only point for improvement would be that the information for the artifacts be put into English. All were in Italian and I like to read and understand. Without using Google translate.

I Went Today to visit the temporary show about Monet with my son . Until i had no babies i couldn't stand babies at shows, but i love sharing my passions with him and basically, have fun togheter, everywhere we are . Beautiful breathtaking paintings mostly about The sea reminded us about our Summer holiday ( a short time like the visit of The show for me after he started protesting and crying ) . So thanks for have created a play room in The middle of the show where we could paint a draw, read a book and built a tower . The only things i have to point out is the presence of stairs not accessible with a stroller and a closed bar . We couldn't see the hole building today but we will come back. Absolutely recomended for Lovers of "fast beautiful shows " and toddlers .

Located in the southern part of Varese, the Torre di Velate stands as a historical testament to the city's past. Originally constructed as a defensive stronghold in the 11th century, this tower served to protect against external threats. Despite only limited remnants remaining today, its significance cannot be understated. Situated within an ancient defensive network, it served as a military outpost overseeing access to Lake Maggiore.

The atmosphere was melancholy, compounded by the closure of many restaurants that could have offered a convivial moment for attendees. Ticket booths were also few and poorly signposted, creating avoidable inconveniences. The removal of the large screen on the track, which allowed viewers to follow the horses, took away one of the most engaging elements of the event. Without that visual reference point, the experience was fragmented and less immersive. The horses 🐴 are beautiful ❤️ I hope the organizers take these aspects into consideration for future editions, because the idea behind the event has potential, but it needs to be enhanced with greater attention to detail and the audience. It's within walking distance of the city center, and there are two paid parking lots next door, which in my opinion are a bit overpriced. Fairs and exhibitions of various kinds are often held there. The building is the main seat of the Municipality of Varese and also houses the mayor's office. On the ground floor, entering through the secondary entrance, you'll find the beautiful municipal library. (Original) Molto bello come posto in centro a Varese. The construction of Bernascone's Bell Tower began in the 11th century and was completed in 1631 by the renowned architect. Recently, it underwent restoration due to a fire incident. Situated at the heart of Varese, this tower serves as both a belfry and the tallest structure in the city. Its architectural design seamlessly blends with its surroundings, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
The basilica of San Vittore is a Catholic place of worship, located in the centre of Varese, dedicated to San Vittore. Its relevance are the baroque bell tower, and the baptistry of St. John of Gothic style. In 1925, Pope Pius XI elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica. The basilica was built between the first half of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries on an earlier church, perhaps fourteenth century; near the baptistry of San Giovanni dating back to the fourteenth century. The construction took place at three distinct times The presbytery, of a purely Mannerist-Renaissance shape, was built in the first half of 1500 and consecrated as early as 1542 The body of the church, was designed by the influential architect Pellegrino Tibaldi and then built between 1580 and 1625 under the direction of Giuseppe Bernascone The facade, neoclassical, is instead due to Leopoldo Pollack, who built it between 1788 and 1791.

We were just passing by, as the walking trail starts there. A local festival made the place very bustling and the atmosphere was filled with excitement which sufficiently masked the sense of melancholy this place would otherwise possess. Today it is completely abandoned to itself. The funicular is unusable. Thanks to FAI it is possible to visit it for a few days a year. Some areas are not accessible, others have been removed from their original appearance due to material used for a film production which was never removed from it. I consider this shameful. It is a place to be preserved and recovered, testimony to an ancient way of holidaying, elegantly, in a pleasant place. Much has been destroyed (like the old elevator) but much can be recovered. The FAI does what it can, but huge investments would be necessary. Let's hope that this treasure is not lost completely. (Translated by Google) we went thanks to the varese alpine group. Here is a little history of the hotel. The construction site began in 1910 and ended in 1912, while the restaurant and the funicular (which was managed by the Varesina Electrical Companies Company) came into operation some time before. For the construction of the complex, ingenious construction and plant solutions were used, including mines and dynamite charges to excavate the rock, and the overall intervention profoundly modified the landscape of the area, since a vast garden was built around the buildings. After its opening, for about half a century the complex was the destination of a large flow of elite tourism, interrupted only by the two world wars. In 1944 it was used as a Military Hospital. In 1947 a fire devastated the top floor, which was hastily repaired with a prefabricated structure. In 1953, with the closure of the funicular, the decline of the tourist flow began and, around 1968, the hotel and restaurant closed their doors. In the following twenty years the hotel, thanks to the total disinterest of the owners and the negligence of the caretakers, was gradually stripped of many pieces of period furniture (some of enormous value), of which only a part was saved. Presumably around the 1980s (but there are no certain sources in this regard) the prefabricated attic installed in 1947 was replaced by a more robust masonry roof covered with bituminous sheaths and sheets of copper (or similar material), still present as of 2022.

Catholic church
Chiesa dei SS. Pietro e Paolo in Biumo Inferiore is a beautiful church, especially after its restoration, with the discovery of ancient stone remains under the altar. It has been a popular church and holds significance for those who were part of the Catholic community in lower Biumo. The area also features a modern and an ancient church, as well as a nice playground suitable for children at Perelli park.
Well organised with anti-covid measures: separate entrance and exit, seat separation policy, disinfectant at entrance, when taking communion up the central aisle and return via the side aisles, local community members ensure the rules are respected. Well-maintained place of worship for RCs.

(Translated by Google) The church is really beautiful but the priests cannot be seen. They manage to destroy everything. There was the oratory next door and no one can be seen inside anymore. Since last year there is no longer even the weekday oratory. A real scandal. There are fewer and fewer people at masses and those who remain are counting down to the change of priests. Grotta Marelli is an exquisite and well-concealed cave that was formed many millennia ago. It offers a remarkable summer tour, especially suitable for avid rock climbers. I suggest visiting Varese in August, during the alpine festival, to fully appreciate this enchanting gem nestled in a secluded and magnificent area. The surrounding ambiance adds an extra layer of mystery and mystique to the experience.
This cave is a beautiful and well hidden one. Formed here hundreds of thousands of years ago, this cave can be toured during summer. I recommend for you climbing enthusiasts out their to visit Varese in august, when the alpine festival is around so then you can tour this little gem in such a magical and magnificent secluded area. The surroundings also make it more mysterious and mystical than normal. Not many visit this place. I for once, a person who was born in Varese and lived here for all my life, only heard of it when the alpine group came to town in august 2022. My parents who have been living in Varese when the old grand hotel campo dei fiori was open, also only heard about in in august 2022. The tour is for all ages (5-). I recommend this

(Translated by Google) The Marelli cave is located in the garden of the old Grand Hotel of the Campo dei Fiori. We visited it on the occasion of the Alpine celebrations. The group was heterogeneous which made us think that it was a more "touristy" visit but inside we did, with great pleasure, seeing that the route was not very simple. The Marelli Cave is one of the many discoveries within the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park in Varese. The name was given in memory of the young Marelli (of the Milanese Magneti Marelli family) who lost his life here at a very young age at just 19 years old. It runs for over 5km and has a maximum depth of 500m. Only at the end of the 1970s was this incredible depth discovered, which was previously thought to only reach up to around 75 metres. The discovery was made by a group of speleologists from Varese (one was also present at our visit as a guide). Thanks to the other guide, a lady who if I'm not mistaken is called Donatella, we were able to reach the maximum point reachable for non-professional visitors, around 70m. Not the whole group went down because there were people who didn't feel like it and the last stretch was quite narrow. We stopped where we then need to start crawling. I must say that it was a wonderful experience which I however recommend to people who are a little physically prepared and who do not suffer from claustrophobia. The limestone formations that we were able to see were beautiful and are shown in the photos. Ci siamo fermati dove poi bisogna a iniziare a strisciare.

(Translated by Google) !!! POSSIBLE POISONED BAITS!!! JULY 30, 2025, suspected dog/cat meat found. Possible poisoned bait! Nice park, with plenty of shade and fairly well-maintained. Nice variety of flora. IT IS NOT a dog park. As in ALL PUBLIC PLACES, dogs MUST BE KEPT ON A LEASH (wild animals of varying sizes are present) and THEIR EXCRETMENT MUST BE PICKED UP, which is obviously quite difficult to understand, despite the mandatory signs. In fact, it has become a huge DUNGING PLACE. It is a fairly quiet park, although the number of visitors has increased significantly. There are NO play areas for children. Recent urban redevelopment work has brought, along with construction workers, a fair amount of ABANDONED GARBAGE. Piles of FOOD OF VARIOUS NATURE and DUBLINARY ORIGIN have been found on several occasions, so dog owners should be cautious. Until a few years ago, it was a pleasant oasis of tranquility, but thanks to a fair number of RUDE AND UNCIVILIZED FELLOW CITIZENS, the situation has changed dramatically. Needless to say, this has led to an increase in visits from environmental officers. P.S. As a dog owner, I recommend bringing pepper spray, as many freaks let their dogs loose without being properly trained when called, and checking your shoes, as there's a high risk of finding them covered in dirt. (Original) !!! POSSIBILI BOCCONI AVVELENATI !!! 30 LUGLIO 2025, trovata sospetta carne per cani/gatti. Possibile boccone avvelenato!

Not a simple container, but a room that knows how to dialogue with the works, enhance them, amplify their voice. Sala Veratti is not just an exhibition space: it is an elegant scenography where art finds its deepest breath. The exhibitions it hosts are never banal. They are carefully selected, thought out, desired. Like those seen in these images: valuable exhibitions, full of meaning, that tell visions, sensibilities, paths. In this room, each painting finds its natural place, each installation becomes part of a larger story. There is something sacred in the light that enters from those ancient windows, something that caresses the works without stealing the scene. Those who exhibit here feel the privilege and responsibility of being part of an important story: the story of the city, of its living culture, of its artistic soul. Sala Veratti is one of those places that make art accessible but never predictable. A space that welcomes and enhances, that gives dignity to every sign, every color, every silence. A must-see for those who love art that leaves its mark. Mountain peak
1,032m-high mountain with forested hiking routes from the south (Bergazzana) & west (Brinzio).
(Translated by Google) Very nice ring and in the area for those who live in the province of Varese... Rasa... Monte Chiarella.. Martica... Brinzio with a polenta break at 3.30 pm at the Il Borgo restaurant.. and off again towards the Rasa with the path that runs along the Brinzio lake (there are 2 paths but given the time we preferred to do the one towards the lake... which in any case at the beginning is not indicated as a path towards the Rasa, but from the Brinzio lake it is shorter and well signposted)... in this period, pay attention to the path that goes from Martica down to Brinzio... very full of leaves and not very visible... but it's worth it. Trekking clothing is definitely recommended in this period, especially suitable shoes... have a good journey everyone!

(Translated by Google) Walked up from Brinzio. Short circular itinerary suitable for half-day tours. Not dangerous, challenging ramps, very beautiful beech and pine forest. Too bad the lack of a fascinating panorama. Sentieri segnalati in maniera accurata

(Translated by Google) Beautiful. Nature, nature and only nature. I recommend the panoramic rock near the top of Mount Martica. Magical and little-known place with cross and summit book. The military road carved into the rock is beautiful and convenient. (Original) Bellissimo. Natura, natura e solo natura.
