Ancient Ruins
Discover the ancient wonders of Mitreo di Santa Maria Capua Vetere, an important Roman temple dedicated to the god Mithras. This well-preserved archaeological site, considered one of the oldest in the West, offers a glimpse into the religious practices of Mithraism. The mithraeum's beautiful frescoes and structures provide a fascinating testimony to this ancient cult.
beautiful small museum in Capua, wortd visiting
Valentin T — Google review
Italians have a problematic low talent for proper organisation, its just impossible as tourist to organise a trip with the ministry of culture offering only Italian websites. Plus opening hours on Google didn't match the Mitreos actuall hours which I only got after emailing with a , although friendly, lady from the museum. Get this straight Italian come on, we know Italians hate mass tourism but don't forget Italy is one of the countries that will remain within reach after flights will be impossible because of climate change for the rest of Europe. Use the subsidies Italy regularly get from the EU good it will be 5 stars
Bas W — Google review
I only gave it 3 stars because it's not open. My Italian is not good, but I think it's closure is due to some sort of renovation. It may have been due to the inordinate amount of rain at the end of March and beginning of April when we were there. Not certain. I was disappointed because this was an ancient underground temple and well preserved. You can read the history of this and other Mithraic temples in Europe online. Local museums have artifacts from the Mitreo.
David A — Google review
The Mitreo was not accessible but the adjacent museum had a small collection of pottery and other archeological artefacts on the ground floor. The second floor had a projector display of the inside of the Mitreo alongside other artefacts. Some of the information panels had both Italian and English text.
Alex C — Google review
You can feel and smell the history... A monument where people used to go to pray to the gods (before jesus time)

(Translated by Google) The Mithraeum of Santa Maria Capua Vetere is considered one of the oldest in the West. The Mithraic solar cult, widespread among legionaries and gladiators, had mysterious and warrior characteristics. The Mithraeum is accessible from a turret building from which one descends into the underground, which recalls the cave in which Mithras was born. The cult room is dominated by the fresco with the scene of the sacrifice of the bull. To visit, you must book at the archaeological museum.

The Archaeological Museum of Ancient Capua is housed in the former medieval convent of the Lateran Canonichesse and is dedicated to showcasing the history of Nola from prehistoric times to the eighteenth century. It features sections on the Prehistoric Village of Nola, Hellenistic-Roman artifacts, and late-Medieval exhibits. The museum complements the archaeological museum and includes an Archive that was once a building-command of the Juvenile Prison.
It's an Etruscan museum. It has quite a collection of very interesting findings, all of them in excellent shape. College students offer tours for free. They're quite passionate and knowledgeable. Worth a visit!!

Worth a visit. See how far back the history of this area goes.

We were very disappointed with the amphitheatre which was inaccessible due to the fencing all around the site, especially as it cost €10 per person. We did manage to explore underground which just about saved the day but we recommend you visit the amphitheatre in Sessa Auranca instead.
Sue C — Google review
Standard museum with glass shelves. No information in English, so it is for Italian visitors.
Romein I — Google review
Really enjoyed our visit here. Bigger than we had anticipated and loads of artifacts to look at with a lot of good information. Unfortunately there were only a few information boards with English translations so we did struggle when we lost of phone signals for the translator. I was disappointed that the Mithreaum was closed, doesn't look to be open again for a while either which was a shame. Still worth a visit though, especially given that you get entry here with your ticket to the amputheatre.

Great experience. The museum is full of history. However, some of the items were lacking in English version or no description at all. Overall, a place you want to see if you are interested in Southern history of Italy.

Museo Campano, established in 1869 and located in Palazzo Antignano di Capua, offers a unique experience with its thirty-two exhibition halls showcasing the world collection of Matres Matutae. The museum houses an enormous quantity of artifacts including statues, busts, jewelry, coins, and works of art. Visitors can explore the rich secular and religious testimonies as well as the section dedicated to Frederick II.
This is a treasure of a place! We found it by accident and so glad we did. Room after room of beautifully presented ancient artefacts, and a huge collection of mother and baby statues (pre Christian) from the nearby area.

(Translated by Google) The Campano Provincial Museum, owned by the Province of Caserta, was built in 1870 by the archaeologist and paleographer Gabriele Iannelli. This museum is a significant museum of the Italic civilization of Campania, it is located in the fifteenth-century Palazzo Antignano, an example of Catalan civil architecture. Museum managed in a disorganized way and with little attention to the needs of visitors. Rude and unfriendly "corridor" staff, superficial cleanliness and dust everywhere. A fascinating place with great historical and artistic origins that should certainly be managed and organized differently.

(Translated by Google) A place to pleasantly lose yourself in an afternoon. Beautiful in every way: housed in the 15th-century Palazzo Antignano, which alone merits a detailed tour, this splendid setting has been used for a wide variety of exhibitions, from the famous epigraphs studied and arranged by Mommsen, to the extraordinary cult of the Matres Matute, to the remains of the ancient medieval gate of Capua commissioned by Frederick II. It's also delightful to discover the library hidden behind a striking door, where you can study and consult thousands of books. A treasure trove containing millennia of history, lovers of ancient art, archaeology, and even art historians will appreciate this little gem, which could easily rival many of Italy's great museums.

The lapidary workshop houses a collection of inscriptions retracing the history of the Roman city, a must-see for epigraphy enthusiasts. The visit continues with the rooms dedicated to the Sanctuary of Mater Matuta, an ancient indigenous place of worship that yielded more than 160 statues of seated female figures holding from one to twelve children. This collection, unique in Italy and the world, is presented in a striking, modern setting. The collections of architectural terracotta and Greek and Italic ceramics are also remarkable. Modern Capua, founded in the Middle Ages, is illustrated by magnificent sculptures from the time of Frederick II, including a portrait of the emperor. A museum that will delight both enthusiasts and casual visitors alike, thanks to its emotional impact. The Castello delle Pietre o dei Principi Normanni, also known as the Norman Castle, is a historic fortress in Capua. Constructed by the Normans in 1602 using stones from the city's amphitheater, it stands as a symbol of Norman domination. The castle features an imposing tuff tower added in the 19th century and an armory room that showcases its historical significance. The complex is lovingly designed and develops a mysterious, almost mystical atmosphere, especially if you are alone there. (Original) Im 18. Anfiteatro Campano in Santa Maria Capua Vetere is a historic site that reflects the ancient city of Capua. Although some areas are under restoration, the visit is still impressive. The architecture, both above and below ground, showcases detailed designs and broken pieces of columns. Exploring the underground area provides a cool escape from the heat while offering a unique experience.
This is the 2nd largest roman amphitheatre. What makes this a great place to visit is that you can access the underground part of the amphitheatre. It's a special experience to walk under the arena. The amphitheatre is also reasonably intact, and you get an impression of the size and how tall it was. Next to Anfiteatro Campano is about 20% of the foundation of an older amphitheatre, which is where spartacus was a gladiator. There is also a small gladiator museum.
Lars C — Google review
Gives you an impression of size,. A reasonable amount of the structure remains. Find the entrance to the part below the arena floor.

This place is well worth a visit or a detour as we did. It does not seem to be anywhere as well known as the Colossium in Rome despite being only 2nd in size to it. Most of the time we were the only ones around. You are free to rome around the site at your leisure which is wonderful. Walking through the tunnels underneath is very atmospheric and also a cooling break from the sun.
Andrew H — Google review
Nice and quiet Arena. Good access. You can walk around it..through it and visit the catacombs.
Marc S — Google review
Fortunately, we knew ahead of time that much of the inside of the area would not be accessible due to restoration. That curbed our disappointment. Still, seeing this ancient building was magnificent. Even better, on this hot, balmy day, touring the underground area had the added benefit of being nice and cool. The architecture above and below ground is truly impressive. The broken pieces of columns, the detailed designs. It is difficult to imagine just how spectacular this place was brand new. If there was any reason to have a time machine, going back to see it in the 1st century would be one.

Really interesting place to visit. There's little museum on the side and toilets 🚻 Enjoyed walking around and underground this historic place.

Last night, I attended a fantastic concert called "Gran Natale concerto" at the Teatro Garibaldi. The Nawy NATO Orchestra gave an exceptional performance, exhibiting remarkable skill and precision that was truly admirable. It was unfortunate that the local authorities did not extend their welcome, but the orchestra has promised to return in April. Let's give the authorities another opportunity to fulfill their duties and properly host these talented musicians who deserve nothing less than top-notch treatment.
Magnificent space. The staff were very nice and gave us a free tour. Thanks so much!

Last night I attended wonderful concert "Gran Natale concerto", performed by US Nawy NATO Orchestra at theTheatre Garibaldi. They played so well and with such a perfection that was worth every admiration. It was pity that no one from the municipality didn't welcome them. But they promissed that they will return in end of April. Lets give the authorities another chance to act as they should, and host this wonderful players in the way they really deserves.

The Monument to the Fallen ossuary Garibaldi is a site of profound historical significance, dedicated to honoring the brave Garibaldini who lost their lives during the pivotal Battle of Volturno in 1860. This impressive structure, built in 1888, stands at around 19 meters tall and features a striking triangular obelisk topped with the star of Italy. It serves as a solemn resting place for those who fought valiantly for a united homeland.
(Translated by Google) Monument created to honor all the Garibaldini dead in the famous battle of Volturno in 1860 (fought in various places in the province of Caserta including Maddaloni itself, Caiazzo, Sant'Angelo in Formis and Castelmorrone) which marked the end of the Bourbon kingdom and the birth of the Italian state. The same is located near the famous Carolino bridge. Attached I put some photos from my last visit.

(Translated by Google) The ossuary monument was built in 1888. The monument rises approximately 19 meters with a triangular-shaped obelisk on top of which is placed the star of Italy and inside it contains the bones of Garibaldini who fell on 1 October 1860. The obelisk stands on a base, also triangular, in the middle of which opens the door that gives access to the ossuary. On the sides of this door there are two high reliefs representing Garibaldi, Nino Bixio, Pilade Bronzetti, Fabrizi, Cairoli, Dezza, Avezzana, Medici, De Martino, and others. This base rests on three steps, on the third of which there were, until the theft in 1990, bundles of weapons placed against the rock. The entrance to the crypt is guarded by an iron door decorated with two palm branches, an almost sacred symbol of the crown of glory, which in the history of humanity encircles the foreheads of martyrs for their country. This entrance is surmounted by an oak wreath, which surrounds the inscription 1 October 1860. At the top there is a bronze statue depicting the winged victory, which with a flaming scythe in the right and palm branches on the left, rests on the plinth after the glorious flight, to place the desired palm on the monument that recalls so many memories and so much heroism.

The well-designed and interactive rooms provide complex puzzles that require teamwork, intuition, and attention to detail to solve. Visitors praise the friendly staff who ensure a thorough understanding of the game's dynamics.
We celebrated a group of 6, 10 to 13 year Olds and they had a blast and solved the room with time to spare. The coach spoke great English and was helpful when they were stuck. Nice facility. Parking is street parking so plan ahead.

Themed puzzles, very complex, but all it takes is good collaboration and a bit of intuition and you're done. Furthermore, the flyer idea is very nice! One flaw, we were missing the last lock and we would have left 😥 In any case, highly recommended. P.s.: it's the 4th time we've done it, but the best one so far! Nestled beneath a building on Via A. Moro, the Domus di Confuleius o Bottega del Tintore is a hidden gem that even locals may not know about. This ancient merchant's domus-workshop dates back two millennia and offers a fascinating glimpse into history. The site features an almost perfectly preserved floor mosaic, showcasing the owner's name along with an inscription filled with well-wishes, adding to its charm.
(Translated by Google) A unique, engaging place, unknown even to residents. It is a domus-workshop of a merchant who lived two thousand years ago and today is used as the basement of the building above, open once a year for special events. The evocative floor mosaic has remained practically intact over the centuries and it is possible to read the owner's name, part of its history and a well-wishing inscription. It should be much more valued given that it has nothing to envy of the most renowned archaeological sites in the area such as the mithraeum, the Campania amphitheater or Hadrian's arch.
