(Translated by Google) The church is imposing and wonderful in terms of structure, decorations, style, etc. etc. In fact, the church deserves a 5-star rating. Unfortunately, some "genius" (evidently on the upper floors) authorized the "rape" of this wonderful structure by burying the entire floor with industrial cement (except for a few sporadic square meters here and there) and therefore everything that a church of such an age and importance could hide underneath. Long live Italy, its bureaucracy and its corruption! (Original) La chiesa è imponente e meravigliosa come struttura, decorazioni, stile, ecc ecc.

Narni Sotterranea is a fascinating underground world that was discovered in 1977 by a group of speleologists. It includes a 13th-century Benedictine church adorned with frescoes, a Roman cistern, extensive aqueducts, and even a Holy Inquisition courtroom and jail cell covered in prisoner graffiti. Narni itself has historical significance dating back to Roman times when it held an important position along the Via Flaminia.
This is an excellent tour and interesting and spooky piece of history. Indian Jones next movie plot? What they have done with the video sections of the tour definitely adds to the tour. Call ahead for the English tour as it is not every half hour like the Italian tour.
Joe — Google review
I loved and was also disapointed. 2 hour tour in italian language because english translator over phone didnt work. They do not have english speaking guide only app on phone. But still you find out how local boys discovered this church hidden beneath the earth, because the monks hid it. This church was inquisition church with prison and even torture chamber. And way out is through above grounds church. Nice piece of history.
Rok S — Google review
It is ok to visit this underground site, but not for 1,5 hours covering just 4 small rooms and 1 church. Especially since the church was the most spectacular but you were allowed to spend there the shortest time. English audio guide is downloadable but it is just a very short version of what the guide talked and the church was almost not included. I added 1 star for the kindness of the staff and that dogs are allowed.

Narni Sotterranea is undoubtedly the most fascinating, insightful, educational, and emotionally compelling attraction in Umbria. What truly sets this experience apart is not just what you see and explore, but the captivating way in which the story unfolds, brought to life by the passionate and knowledgeable guides. Their storytelling transports visitors through centuries of history, unveiling the mysteries and secrets of this underground world in an engaging and immersive way.

One of the best guided tours I've had ever. Our guide Letizia, with her unparalleled passion and enthusiasm, took us back in time, reenacting, explaining, and revealing parts of history never heard of before. This is not to miss - the story of Narni sotterranea is a grand one for Narni, Umbria, Italy, catholicism, architecture, and archaeology to name a few. Totally recommended! Grazie Letizia!!

Absolute must-visit if you are in the area, such a beautiful backstory of its discovery and the tour is very well done. The tour takes around 1h30min. During winter the tour is only available with an Italian-speaking guide, in summer there are other languages available as well. There are audioguides for other languages though.

The Bridge of Augustus, built in 27 CE, was a crucial route connecting Rome to the province of Fano. Although partially destroyed by a flood in 1000 BCE, it still stands as an impressive example of Roman engineering. Rocca Di Narni is a significant fortress in Narni, built in the 1370s by architect Gattapone and recently restored. The fortress offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and provides access to the Eroli museum with a single ticket. Visitors can explore various rooms that narrate the history and folklore of the town. Additionally, it is part of Cardinal Albornoz's efforts to reorganize the Church states during the 14th century.
This is a lovely place. We saw this beautiful castle by the road and made the right decision to visit. The guides tour is worthwhile getting, and the building has been restored, making it a marvelous medieval castle.

Nice walk up from historic Narni, up cobblestone alleys. Don't rely on Google maps which take you on main car route. The fort is mostly empty unless there is an exhibition. Grounds and views are great. WC available. Not much written in English. Tour in Italian only.

Nima Z — Google review
Worth the trip to see the castle close up, but very disappointing inside - For the price of €10 per person for entry, we were expecting to see much more than some poor contemporary art. Half of the castle was closed to the public. The building is magnificent, with amazing potential, but a waste of the space inside. No surprise it was empty inside except for three small groups of people on a Saturday. Would love to have seen some more historical artefacts and a museum describing the history and architecture.

I think the view from the castle is more impressive than the castle itself. It's cool but really nothing special.

When we first visited this place i was surprised at how big it was because for some reason i expected it to be smaller. The castle is beautiful and you can get the taste of life by walking through it. In the end we had a fantastic experience when the people at the museum showed ys how medievil siege engines worked. We really liked the trebuchet firing water ballons in the valley below.

If you walk around Narni, I happened to see a single billboard placed high up on a corner of a building... the structure is very large, the staff is friendly, but in fact, in some rooms it seems bare and above all, many exhibits seem repetitive and placed there just to fill up... the multimedia table didn't work and the routes weren't intuitive and the signage didn't help you... it would have enormous potential, in my opinion, but it's under-exploited. I highly recommend visiting the Convento del Sacro Speco di San Francesco, as it offers a profound spiritual atmosphere. Make sure to explore the higher part of the location, which leads to a cave that you should enter if given the opportunity. Despite signs suggesting otherwise, there are no restrictions in place. If you're lucky, you may even find some Castagna fruit from a tree planted by St. Francis himself.
Very special place with the touch of history (1220!), where St. Francis spent some time. Amazing to be there!

I really recommend it. Such a deep spiritual ambient. Don't forget to visit the higher part of the location which leads to the cave. Enter to the cave if you had the chance (although it's written to not enter, but it doesn't seem serious, because there are neither a person to control nor any lock or gate to prohibite. If you were lucky, you can pick up some Castagna (fruit) from the tree that S. Francesco planted. Enjoy it. Also when you visit the church, you may find doors that are closed, but actually you can open them and you'll find intersting medieval rooms there. Enjoy it.

The impressive Romanesque structure of Santa Maria Impensole, built by the monks around 1175, is particularly notable. It is believed to have been erected on the remains of an ancient pagan temple, possibly dedicated to Bacchus. The validation of this theory comes from the discovery of two Roman reservoirs in the lower level of the cathedral. This exquisite medieval-style church is a must-see, where one can still marvel at the intact beauty of numerous wall paintings within its walls.

During restoration, they discovered medieval frescoes, some well-preserved. Small but truly evocative, it deserves a more thorough visit, which I'll reserve for next time. The Concattedrale di San Giovenale is a Catholic church in Narni that boasts four magnificent aisles and an elaborate altar with a canopy. One should not miss the early Christian shrine where the town's patron saint, San Giovenale, was laid to rest. Another notable site is the Palazzo dei Priori, situated in the same square as the church.
When you enter and the international music camp had a performance right then in cathedral. Angelic! Best church visit in Italy so far. The cathedral is worth visit because it is so old, began construction in 11th and finished in early 12th century, dedicated to 4th cantury bishop San Giovenale. There are also some gothic elements because of early renovations like 500 years ago.

Wonderful medieval church, the main church built on the hilltop that kept Narni safe for centuries. While the small town is depopulated as most of small towns in Italy, especially in centre & southern regions, this church with its multi century history is worth a trip. (Translated by Google) Very beautiful, the Cathedral of San Giovenale, commonly known simply as the Cathedral of Narni, is the main place of Catholic worship in the city of Narni, in Umbria, and represents a significant example of medieval religious architecture. Dedicated to San Giovenale, the first bishop and patron saint of the city, its construction dates back to the 12th century, probably overlapping a previous early Christian basilica from the 4th-5th century. The cathedral stands right in the heart of the historic center, near the main square, and dominates the entire ancient urban fabric with its sobriety and grandeur. The architectural appearance of the cathedral is strongly marked by the Romanesque style, with subsequent Gothic and Renaissance modifications. Externally, the facade appears rather simple and bare, made of local stone, with a modest portal surmounted by an arched window. Despite the external simplicity, the interior preserves an artistic heritage of great value. The underground area that I was able to visit during a trip in April 2025 is very beautiful, it really deserves a stop for those who are passionate about history and monuments.

Beautiful spot, with crystal clear running mountain water. Downside is there's nowhere to really sit/lay down given the foot traffic and slope of the stands unless you're one of the early arrivals. Also, no exaggeration, the water was numbing. Marcio — Google review
Loved how clear the water was! Lovely to walk alongside the river and dwell on the thought that C.S. Lewis named his world 'Narnia' after this place. Hannah Brockhaus said: The magical realm of Narnia is the setting of C. S. Lewis' beloved children's book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. There, four children discover a land of talking animals, mythological creatures, the White Witch, and "the Great Lion:" Aslan. This Narnia is fictional, but more than 2,000 years ago, when Romans ruled the civilized world, Narnia was a real-life city on the Italian peninsula – and it still exists today. The ancient hill-town of Narnia, now called Narni, lies in the central Italian region of Umbria, about 50 miles north of Rome. In the city, you can see remnants of the town's extensive history, from its pre-Roman identity as Nequinum, to antique and medieval Narnia, to the present Narni. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia, never visited Narni, but he likely knew about the ancient Narnia from reading Roman history, where it is named by such famous writers as Tacitus, Livy, and Pliny the Elder. In 2009, the town received confirmation of Lewis' knowledge of the place when the Christian author's biographer and former personal secretary, Walter Hooper, gifted Narni's local historian, Giuseppe Fortunati, a copy of a Latin atlas owned by Lewis, on which the Belfast-born author had underlined the town named "Narnia." Hooper also relayed that Lewis had told him the name on the atlas had inspired him in the writing of his Chronicles. And while the two places aren't the same – it very rarely snows in Narni, for example – there are connections between the imaginary realm and the real-life city that can still be seen today. One of these connections is the presence of a large stone table, which recalls the stone table in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, upon which the lion Aslan, a representation of Christ in the book, sacrifices himself to save Edmund, one of the four children in the story. Found near the Via Flaminia, an ancient road which leads from Rome to the Adriatic Sea, and which also passes by Narni, stands an ancient stone table believed to date from pre-Roman times, and to have been a place of animal, and possibly even human, sacrifice. The town was founded around 1,000 years before Christ by the Osco-Umbrian people as Nequinum. It was conquered by the Roman Republic in the 4th century BC, and its name was changed to Narnia, after the nearby Nar River. "Nar," Fortunati told EWTN, "means 'water that flows,'" noting that this may also be a reason why Lewis chose the name for his imaginary land, since "water is the source of life."

(Translated by Google) The Castle of San Girolamo is an ancient Franciscan convent, founded by the Narnese cardinal Berardo Eroli in 1471, of which today nothing remains other than the church, the base of the bell tower and a few other elements incorporated into the most recent construction dating back to the 19th century. The church - with a single nave - is the oldest element of the complex: it still retains the original coffered portal and above it, the elegant 19th century rose window has replaced the austere 17th century window. From the outside you can see that the apse incorporates one of the four corner towers of the castle, while inside, still in the apse, there is a large canvas portraying San Girolamo, inspired by one of the panels of Ghirlandaio's predella. It should therefore be noted that the famous painting "The Coronation of the Virgin" by Ghirlandaio (dating to around 1486) was originally placed in the apse of this church and was the destination of a heartfelt pilgrimage until its transfer (1871) in rooms of the municipal building of Narni. It is currently preserved in the Eroli Museum. The notable cycle of frescoes "The Stigmata of Saint Francis" by Spagna (the Spaniard Giovanni di Pietro, a pupil of Perugino) detached during the restoration and transferred to canvas, are today preserved in the Palazzo Comunale of Narni. The crenellated towers of the castle of San Girolamo and the massive bell tower of its church stand out powerfully over the rural landscape of the Terni basin, clearly signaling the historical pre-existence... now - unfortunately - debased by a serious state of abandonment and decontextualised by its neighbor of the same name sports facility. The subversive laws between 1850 and 1900 made him return to the municipality, then to Count Valbranca and to the Bourbons. From the 1920s to the 1970s it was the seat of an order of missionary friars and among the young people trained there was also the singer-songwriter Rino Gaetano (Original) Un'altro pezzo di storia narnese che ha attraversato intatto i secoli, quando si percorre la strada che porta a Narni è impossibile che non ci cada lo sguardo, originariamente (cit wik.)nel 1300 era un convento di monache benedettine per poi passare nel 1400, prima alla famiglia Capococcia che lo trasformò in residenza poi al conte Eroli che lo arredo' sontuosamente e lo dono' hai frati minori che lo tennero quattro secoli.
