Outdoor Activities
Spiaggia Cala Seregola is a picturesque beach located near Rio Marina on the island of Elba. The characteristic reddish-colored sand and gravel, remnants of past mining activities, give the beach a unique charm. Visitors can explore old industrial buildings and a disused wharf that reflect the area's historical significance. Additionally, an Etruscan oven excavated in the earth adds to the site's allure.
Nice sandy beach with some snorkling spots. Big free parking space and also a wide beach, so there should be enough space for anyone.
Andr P — Google review
Great beach on Elba. Nice and soft shiny sand with iron elements. In water, it looks like in fairy tale
Maksym M — Google review
My favorite beach on this side of the island as we are close to Rio Marina. Big, lots of parking, rocks of course but some mix of sand. Easy to find and always a spot to plant the umbrella and spend the day.

Spiaggia Marina Di Gennaro is one of the three coves accessible from the panoramic road of the port, along with Porticciolo di Rio and Luisi d'Angelo. These beaches are made up of gravel and large stones and can only be reached by footpaths surrounded by holm oaks and pine trees.

(Translated by Google) A lovely, quiet beach very close to Rio Marina but separated by a rocky coast. Access is via a paved road closed to traffic. Descend to a nature trail along a short dirt path with a few awkward steps. Relatively private, with no facilities; gravel and a few rocks below the overhang provide shade. The water is very clear. The gray-white rock strata contrast beautifully with the wind-worn scrub. A majestic pine tree towers over the cliff to the right and seems ready to dive into the sea.

The water is clean and clear, and you can dive from the rocks. (Translated by Google) An open-air aquarium. Isolated, with few people. Spectacular, crystal-clear water, where you can observe almost all types of fish. Ideal for snorkelers like us. I recommend bringing lunch or snacks, as "fortunately" there are no facilities. (Original) Un acquario a cielo aperto . Isolata , con poche persone . (Translated by Google) We wanted to go to this beach because we'd seen very positive reviews and because we appreciate more isolated and wild coves. Unfortunately, the water was rough and the waves made it impossible to get in, as you risk hitting some rocks, so we didn't stay. However, I imagine this beach's charm is even greater when the water is calm and the weather is nice. The walk to get there is short but involves some uncomfortable steps. The cove is very small, so if it's crowded, you might not find space for an umbrella and towels. There are no services.

Botanical garden
Art center
Nestled on a hillside near the Hermitage of Santa Caterina, Orto dei Semplici Elbano is a delightful botanical garden that showcases the native flora and medicinal herbs of Elba. This serene oasis invites visitors to stroll along its peaceful paths while soaking in breathtaking panoramic views. A visit here offers an enriching blend of nature, culture, and history, making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate horticulture and the beauty of Mediterranean biodiversity.
Rather small but all the more precious botanical garden with a wonderfully quaint vibe to it. The atmosphere is calm and very pleasant. Offering a surprisingly large diversity of local plants and herbs, and the effort to preserve native biodiversity the garden is definitely worth a visit. We were told that they're planning on expanding in the near future, making it even more worth to check out :)

A place full of history immersed in the beautiful Elba landscape. The church nearby (eremo) is renovated but it's worth a visit. You must leave your car in a small parking 300 m away and reach the botanical garden on foot. The garden is a splendid sample of Elba flora, they also produce honey of all sorts.

(Translated by Google) A small, charming botanical garden focusing on the flora of the Tuscan Archipelago. It's very interesting to observe the island's typical plants and appreciate their aromas as you discover them one by one. The hermitage is easily reached on foot from Rio nell'Elba in about 20-30 minutes, but there's also parking just steps from the entrance. In addition to the plants on display, the €5 entrance fee is more than worth it for the location and the view. Highly recommended! Assolutamente consigliato!

Specialty Museums
The Parco Minerario museum offers a fantastic outing option for both young children and older individuals. Visitors can choose between a train or a jeep to explore the mines, with the train being particularly suitable for kids. While the audio on the train may be slightly hindered by the noise, it still provides plenty of interesting information about the mines. The museum also boasts stunning views from atop the hill, allowing visitors to capture amazing photos.
Very nice attraction for kids and grown ups alike. We took the "Trenino" Tour that give you a ride through the area. There are no mines that you drive in, everything is open air. It included a stop where everybody was given a hammer to dig for minerals. And you easily find something sparkling that you can take home.
Flo — Google review
Buy your ticket in advance so you know when you can join the tour to the mine. The tour itself is OK. For me it was all about finding some specimens myself...and they are everywhere! For kids it'll be fun too. The ride back to town however is boring.
J G — Google review
Was pretty cool tour, also mined some minerals to keep! sadly our guide didnt speak english :c
Dharc ( — Google review
Everything was well organized and clearly explained. We took the “by-jeep” mining experience and the driver and guide was very patiently explaining the sites in both Italian and English. Was very helpful for understanding the process and histories of the site. At the museum, staff was also very nice! I left my shoes on the jeep and they very actively helped get it back, quickly! Many thanks!
Xin Z — Google review
We have been to this small museum as family with 2 kids (3, 5) and payed 24 Euros for the tickets. We were welcomed very friendly and our kids got a small crystal stone. The museum is very small and the price therefore quiet high. A lot of the explanation is in Italian or English, so our kids were only able to listen to our explanations. All of the disolay cases were very high so we had always to lift the kids to offer them a look to the shown items and some of the display cases were just empty. The rest of the exhibition showed tools, dresses and working surrounding of a mine. I could imagine a more interactive concept. So from our prospective only something for interested kids who are already going to school and not for small kids. If you like to go to the close mine to find some crystals etc you need to reserve via call in advance.
Roy R — Google review
A very informative, interesting and fun way to understand the rich mining history of Elba. Great family excursion.
Andy T — Google review
On the website you can find different tours to the former mining area, the entrance fee for the museum before or after the tour is included. With our son, who is really interested in any kind of stone we decided to take the tour with the trenino. The road of the mine is dusty, so expect to get a little bit dirty while on the train. At several points an audio guide in Italian, English and German will explain some aspects of the history of mining or the abandoned machinery along the way. After about half an hour the tour will stop and everybody gets a hammer and a bag to collect stones on their own. This was the best part of the tour and it was fun watching all the kids and adults having fun finding pyrit/fools gold and other stones. The guide was very nice, helpful and so were the people at the reception at the museum. Although we did not ask for help he brought us a big chunk of pyrit, that was very appreciated. Thanks for this fun experience!
G&S H — Google review
Great experience. You have the option between a train and a jeep. Train is more suitable for young kids and still good for the older ones. They bring you around the mines and give you a lot of interesting information. The audio on the train is not great, a bit covered by the noise of the train, but you can still get most of it. Translated in english and german. On the top of the hill you have a beautiful view and you can get fantastic photos. They also give you the chance to stop in one of the miner and dig to find minerals that you can bring home. The guide is very kind and provides a lot of interesting info. Great experience for kids and adults.

Spiaggia del Porticciolo is a small beach nestled in a holm oak forest, accessible via a steep path that descends into the woods. Spiaggia dei Topinetti is a unique mineral beach located near the village of Cavo on the scenic coastal road. The beach features black sand rich in hematite, offering an original alternative to the conventional white sand beaches found elsewhere on Elba. The area boasts intense colors with white gravel, sand containing hematite and pyrite, and a colorful reef with rocks ranging from red to yellow. Visitors can enjoy clear waters bordered by a stunning rocky landscape.

Beautiful rocks and special sand with lots of iron in it. You drive up to the beach with the car. You can see mainland Italy from there -if you climb the rocks a bit. We were also almost alone there. The water was less clear because of the dark sand (and a little agitated sea). It was a nice beach to visit and see something different/ special, but for beautiful water with a nice sandy or pebbled beach, there are much nicer places on the island.

(Translated by Google) Small beach, truly a corner of paradise for a few bathers given the size of the beach. It is accessed by following a path, first between some houses and then through the woods. I recommend shoes with good grip given the slope and the dry ground, but nothing too difficult to handle. There are no services on site and no equipped parking; you have to find it along the road. The beach is pebbly, with a beautiful seabed filled with fish. You can park your car along the road; we weren't fined, and I don't think it's dangerous. Dogs are welcome. The Museo civico archeologico del Distretto minerario, located in Rio nell'Elba, offers a deep dive into the Rinaldonian facies and local Elban reality. The museum is well-maintained with friendly staff and provides an audio guide for both adults and children to explore its two exhibition floors. Visitors can also learn about the island's mining research through rare and fascinating finds, making it a worthwhile visit for those interested in archaeology and local history.

(Translated by Google) It's worth a visit. I took the bus from Rio Marina, where I'm staying, and arrived in 20 minutes. You get off the 117 at the Lavato stop—worth a visit—and then a 5-minute walk through the historic center of Rio nell'Elba leads to the panoramic square above the sports field. I descend the spiral stairs and find myself at the museum entrance, an open space set up with maps and texts, and an audio guide in Italian via QR code on your smartphone. Several display cases contain various mineral finds and artifacts related to the island. The archaeological section is well explained and was helpful in understanding Elba's geological formation. The ticket also includes the museum section in Rio Marina, which I have yet to visit. The staff—a young woman, whom I thank—was very kind and helpful. (Translated by Google) In the village of Rio, one of the most well-preserved and vibrant on Elba, this modern museum might clash with the historic urbanization, but it's actually very well integrated, playing on the slope so much so that it's invisible from the square. The museum exhibits in a large glass space beneath a terrace with a splendid panoramic view of the surrounding mining hills and the Piombino Channel. Visitors can see the sites where iron ore has been laboriously extracted and processed since ancient times.

In addition to the archaeological finds found in the cave of San Giuseppe, there is also the very beautiful Etruscan and Roman part. The girl who welcomed us is kind, very competent and helpful. You can also buy some beautiful necklaces of hematite and Elba minerals. I hope that in the future there will be an area that reconstructs the burial with examples of human skeletons among the numerous extracts from the cave of San Giuseppe which are currently located at the University of Pisa. Parco Minerario museum offers an array of exhibits and displays that showcase the rich history and heritage of mining. This cultural establishment provides visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the mining industry through various collections, artworks, and artifacts. It boasts an extensive range of informative materials, including visual presentations, historical documents, and interactive installations. Parco Minerario museum presents a vast selection of geological specimens that highlight the diverse mineral resources found in the region.

A very informative, interesting and fun way to understand the rich mining history of Elba. Great family excursion.

Leonardo S — Google review

I really enjoyed Rio Marina. Among all the cities in the Elba Island, this is the most typical one. The major of the city, in fact, was an old miner that disliked tourism, resulting in a city that better saves its appearance instead of all the others. It really deserves a visit, especially during the night.
