Ancient Ruins
Kızıl Avlu, also known as the Red Basilica, is a Roman-era temple in Bergama that was used for the worship of Egyptian gods. The ruins feature soaring brick walls and rotundas, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient history. While some travelers recommend paying the small entrance fee to explore the well-organized museum inside, others suggest admiring the impressive building from outside.
It's a must see place in Bergama. It's a Roman empire era basilica building which might be one of the largest ones I've ever seen. You can even appreciate it more when you get in the tower and look up to the dome. It worths a visit.

We visited on 5 May 2025. Unfortunately the full site is closed for restoration. There are no signs about it being closed, and when it may re-open. Hence the two stars. I was able to take photos of the outside of the buildings through gaps in the fencing.
Douglas C — Google review
Came here in September with a tour group. This was just a photo stop, entrance not included. But the fee is only a small amount so worth paying to enter and look up close. But you can also walk along the fence outside to have a great view of the ancient temple.
Google L — Google review
Site is simply closed for indefinite "construction" with no information about reopening & despite still being listed as an active and available "museum" covered by the Aegean Museum pass.
Caroline C — Google review
Badly preserved historical place (this is very unfortunate). You can visit if it happens to be on your way say driving from izmir to Istanbul but do not go out of your way to visit. Visit time less than 1 hour.

Bergama Museum, housed in a 1930s building, showcases significant archaeological antiquities and Middle Eastern and Islamic art. The museum is home to magnificent artifacts from Pergamon, Asklepion, the site of the dam behind Pergamon, and exquisite gold jewelry found in Bergama. Visitors can explore the rich history of the region through ancient theater ruins located nearby.
Unfortunately, the master piece(Zeus Altar)is dismantled and re-assembled in Berlin,German. But one could sense a glimpse of previous glory in the museum. So, please don't miss it if you are Hellenic/Romanic lover.

Explanations (in the English version) were rather bad, verging on the not understandable, with major mistakes (no Athens did not win the Peloponesian war !). The collection itself is also rather underwhelming, in part due to some of the best pieces being in Istanbul's archeological museum. I must however congratulate the personnel working there for their honesty, returning to me some money that had fallen from my pocket without me noticing it.
Pascal L — Google review
Dearest readers: This is a small museum, but with many historical riches. I can understand more about the culture and the history. I recommend you to visit here. The enter not is expensive and you can admire all the awesome details of this great place.

Good place to start visiting bergama historical city. There is a lot of artefacts from the different archeological sites around the city. There is also an ethnic museum in the same place ( no need for extra ticket) it's very nice and funny. Very nice museum I really recommend it. Ticket price In August 2021 was around 10 Tl.

Pergamon Ancient City, located in Bergama, holds great historical significance dating back to the Bronze Age. The city boasts numerous archaeological sites, buildings, and artifacts that attract history enthusiasts. Pergamon was once the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC and housed one of the world's largest libraries. Visitors can explore this ancient city by driving or taking a lift from lower down.
Majesty of the Pergamon Empire / The ancient city of Pergamon was one of the most powerful and intellectually influential cities of the Hellenistic world. After the death of Alexander the Great, it became the capital of the Attalid dynasty, a prosperous kingdom that ruled much of Asia Minor from the 3rd to 2nd century BC. Under their reign, Pergamon flourished as a cultural, political, and medical hub rivaling even Alexandria and Athens. The Pergamon Library held over 200,000 scrolls and rivaled the Library of Alexandria. When Egypt cut off the supply of papyrus, Pergamon developed parchment (pergamenum), revolutionizing bookmaking. The city was also a religious center, home to the Altar of Zeus, Sanctuary of Athena, and Temple of Trajan. It’s even mentioned in the Book of Revelation as the place "where Satan's throne is"—likely referring to the imposing Altar of Zeus. We spent over 3 hours exploring this site, and it still felt like there was more to see. The area is vast, with many layers of ruins, so we recommend allowing at least 3 hours for a proper visit. Especially the theater, which is both massive and extremely steep—visitors should be cautious while descending. We highly recommend wearing trekking shoes or athletic sneakers for safety and comfort. #PergamonAncientCity #PergamonEmpire #PergamonTheater #PergamonLibrary #ZeusAltar #AncientRuins

There is a lot to explore in the ancient city of Pergamum! At this particular spot, you’ll find souvenir and some snack shops as well. An enclosed lift (cable car) takes you and your group up to explore as the city is situated upon a hill. You’ll want to spend some time here as there is much to explore. Restrooms were not that great and if you go when it’s hot be prepared for the heat especially because the cable car gets hot if you decide to take that and the ruins are so high up.
Crystal H — Google review
Fabulous remains of the Ancient Greek city on the top of the hill. Accessible by car, a funicular or walking. Great sights from the top of the hill. Worth sparing enough time to walk around and explore the ruins in detail. Information signs and audio guidance available.
Valters K — Google review
One of the most dramatic ruins to be seen! The ancient theatre is the steepest of its kind with a spectacular view. It's a city that deserves to be more famous and there's substantial ruins that hint at its former glory.
Phillip M — Google review
Fabulous - We travelled to the ancient township of Pergamon. Here we visited the ancient “Acropolis of Pergamum”. Perched high on the mountain, we were able to walk through the Temple of Trajan (still partially intact); the Alter of Zeus; and the Amphitheatre (seating for 60,000). They were amazing and offered some stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Norm P — Google review
This was an interesting place to visit. For some reason, it had less people than Ephysis even though it matched other sites. It is placed on top of a hill and driving up by car was an adventure by itself if you are not used to drive in Turkey. You can spend couple of hours easily visiting it and exploring multiple sites.
Radwan Z — Google review
Excellent place to visit with a cable car ride to the top. The City of Pergamum, inhabited by 200,000 people. The seat of Zeus was built on the mountain top, overlooking the entire city, with a panoramic view. In Apostle John’s letter, he says to the church ‘ I know you live where satan’s throne is’

The Greek Theater, located on the Pergamon Acropolis, is a remarkable architectural feat from the Hellenistic period. It boasts a steep slope and an impressive 80 rows of seats, offering visitors a breathtaking view. The theater's unique design includes a wooden stage that was innovative for its time and can be disassembled and reassembled as needed.
We parked in the car park next to the Red Basillica, walked to the cable car, caught that to the Acropolis. Then we bought the next ticket to get into the site. There is a lot to see, we took about an hour but maybe 2 hours is good. The Acropolis is fantastic and we also found tge tunnel entrance to the Ampitheatre which is magnificent. All in all a great place.
Ian C — Google review
The steepest ancient theater on the Earth, with an angle of 70°. Most of it has survived, except for the wooden stage part that is said to be a first. You can enter the theater through a narrow passage at the top. It's built at the side of the mountain and the view is just breathtaking.

Asklepion Heroon is a significant historical site located in the downtown area, easily accessible on foot. It is known as the world's first psychological treatment center and dates back to ancient times. The site offers a parking area for visitors and can be accessed with a museum card. Walking through the historical atmosphere amidst the sounds of nature provides an unforgettable experience.
Definitely one of the most underrated historical sites of the ancient world. This is the first luxurious and top quality detox center of the ancient world that focuser on the well being of the body and the mind. Sleeping rooms, psychological support, concerts and shows, chemical and surgical treatments for everyone including the gladiators and Marcus Aurelius. So well managed, nobody has died here for as long as 800 years.

1. Heroon: A special building built in the memory of heroes in ancient times. 2. Heroon: A sanctuary, tomb monument or temple dedicated to deified or semi-deified heroes in Greek and Roman architectures. The southern part of the Erechteion on the Acropolis of Athens in Greece, which is accepted as the tomb of Kekrops, and the Pelops monument in Olympia are heroons. The most famous of this building type, which has many examples in Anatolia, especially in the Lycia region, is the heroon in Trysa, which is an open structure surrounded by walls decorated with mythological reliefs. Examples can be found in many ancient cities in our country, such as Sagalossos, Termessos, Pergamon, and Asklepion.

The cult was often centered around the heroön, in which the hero's bones were often believed to be found. In a sense, the hero was still alive: meals were offered to him; imagined sharing feasts. It was truly impressive to walk in the historical atmosphere and among the chirping of birds. Especially resting quietly in the waterway at the entrance of the tunnel soothed my soul. I know tourist attractions are expensive during the summer season, so it may be more convenient to visit during non-summer periods. Ancient Ruins
The Asclepieion of Pergamon, located in Bergama, is a significant historical site dating back to the 4th century BC. This ancient complex was dedicated to Asclepius, the god of health, and served as a place of healing centered around natural springs. The main complex features circular architecture with interconnected passages and tunnels, along with a partially restored theater and stoa. Visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the hilltop Pergamon site from this location.

Bob C — Google review
Healing Sanctuary of the Ancient World / The Asclepieion of Pergamon was not only a center for physical healing, but also a symbolic heart of ancient Greco-Roman medical science. Founded in the 4th century BC and flourishing during the Roman period, it was one of the three most famous healing temples of antiquity, alongside Epidaurus and Kos. It functioned as a sacred place where medicine, religion, and ritual came together in harmony. Patients would undergo purification rituals, offer sacrifices, and enter the temple through a long sacred way. Inside, treatments included dream interpretation, the use of medicinal herbs, hydrotherapy, mud baths, and even sound therapy using music and theater. The sacred spring was believed to have healing powers, and the underground tunnel—used to guide patients from the entrance to the heart of the sanctuary—symbolized a spiritual transition. When we visited the site, we were truly amazed by the scale of the sanctuary, especially the tunnel and the sacred water area. Even though centuries have passed, the infrastructure was still impressive. The massive columns, the length of the healing tunnel, and the well-preserved water systems reflected how advanced and well-planned this place was. It made us appreciate how seriously healing and human well-being were taken in the ancient world. #AsclepieionOfPergamon #AncientHealing #GalenLegacy #SacredSpring #AncientTunnel #PergamonHistory

We went as part of a tour towards the end of January and the place was very quiet. It is a beautiful location, steeped in the history of being the first medical healing space in the Western world. We were accompanied by a knowledgeable tour guide who explained everything to us. We were lucky to be the only 6 people there and had plenty of time to take a lot of uninterrupted photos. Highly recommended.

The Altar of Zeus is a significant structure within the ancient city of Pergamon, featuring an ornamental frieze depicting the war between giants and Olympian gods. The altar measures approximately 35 x 33 meters and holds historical and cultural significance. Although only a replica remains at the site, it once housed stolen temple artifacts that are now displayed in museums. Visitors can explore the Acropolis, Lower City, and Asklepion while taking in views of the valley and lake.

The Red Basilica, also known as the Temple of Serapis, is a historical site in Bergama. The temple's ruins are part of an open-air museum that showcases the region's rich history. The site also features a Separis statue and offers insights into its past as both a temple and cathedral.
The sheer size of these buildings is astounding! Sadly not much detail, but still well worth the visit.

During your visit to Bergama, you can visit the Asklepion Health Center and the Acropolis. As you exit Bergama city center to the Acropolis, it will attract attention on your right with its unique structure. For those who do not have a museum card, it can be visited for a small fee. There is parking for private vehicles next to the temple area. Although it is known as the Red Courtyard among the public, you may also see the names Serapis Temple or Serapion Temple and Red Church. As for the brief introduction of the temple; According to historical sources, it was dedicated to the Egyptian God Serapis during the time of Roman Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-138). Temple; In the mid-A.D. century, during the Early Byzantine period, two rows of columns were added to the main building, making it a three-naved, basilical-plan church and dedicated to St. Johannes. It has the title of being one of the first "Seven Churches" of Anatolia mentioned in the Bible. The tower-shaped circular building to the north of the temple began to be used as a mosque during the Ottoman period and still serves as the Kurtuluş Mosque. One of the towers is used as a warehouse where archaeological finds are kept.

Dedicated to the Egyptian god Serapis during the Roman period, this massive structure has also borne the traces of various religions over time. The surviving sections appear to still be intact. However, I believe such a significant ancient structure deserves better preservation and promotion. When I visited, the relevant staff informed me that it was undergoing a six-month restoration process. While it wasn't possible to see the interior, its grandeur was evident from the outside. The building still remains in pretty good shape, with only marble remaining from the temple part of the past, and it appears to have been mainly made of brick when it was rebuilt as a cathedral. The restoration project is underway, and the Separis statue is also worth seeing. To be honest, there isn't much to see in the Red Hall, but the statues and the main auditorium inside are worth seeing. There is nothing to see other than the building and the Serapis statue. However, it is worth seeing because it is easily accessible and the building still remains in good condition. Asclepion doesn't have much to see, but it's expensive and the road is a bit dangerous, and Pergamon has less to see compared to its reputation, and considering that accessibility and entrance fees are poor, Serapis is good in comparison. Eumenes Palace, a remarkable testament to ancient architecture, dates back to the reign of Eumenes II from 197-159 B.C. This historical site is part of a larger complex that includes the renowned library, an impressive hillside theater terrace, and the majestic Altar of Zeus. The Acropolis serves as both a cultural hub and sacred space, offering breathtaking views over Pergamon.
(Translated by Google) It became the capital in the 4th century and was equipped with structures such as palaces, temples and theatres. The most well-known of these structures is the Temple of Zeus. The ruins of the old city were discovered by German engineer Carl Humann, who was working on the construction of railway lines in Anatolia in the 1870s. The first excavations started in the late 1870s. Then he was taken to Germany.🤔 He is still expected to come back. Pergamon Amphitheater is part of the ancient city's remarkable structures, dating back to the time of Eumenes II. The amphitheater is situated on a hillside and is just one of the many impressive buildings in Pergamon, including the famed library, main palace, Altar of Zeus, and Temple of Athena propylaeum. The city consists of the Acropolis, Lower City, and Asklepion medical center.
A place worth visiting. I didn't meet people, but I saw beautiful views of ruins. People who created beautiful buildings once lived and walked in this place. It's worth walking these few dozen meters.

The Bergamalı Kadri Education History Museum, located in a historic Greek school building, showcases a vast collection of educational materials from Bergama. Guided by the school principal Erol Bey, who played a significant role in its formation, the museum not only gathered but also preserved these valuable artifacts. The diverse range of equipment on display provides insights into the rich educational perspective that Pergamon had in the past. We express our gratitude to all those involved in making this museum possible.

Went there with a tour group. We got a demonstration about the process of soaking the skins in lye. Then after about a week, they take it out. They remove the hair with scrapers, they turn it over and remove the fats and other tissues, and then they rinse it with cold water. They then put it under tension, scrape it more times to try and get it thinner, and finer, so you can almost see through it. But not like transparent, and then they let let it dry. They let it dry in the shade they don't want it in the Sun. And you can't use heat. Then we went down to the shop and looked at what they had made out of parchment that you could buy. An interesting selection. Well worth the time. This is not wheelchair friendly except to shop and it's tight.
