Nestled in Blaenavon, the Big Pit National Coal Museum offers a captivating glimpse into the world of coal mining. This former colliery has transformed into an interactive experience where visitors can delve deep into the lives of miners who toiled underground. Guided by ex-miners, you can embark on an exhilarating underground tour that takes you 90 meters down via a lift shaft, allowing you to truly appreciate the challenges faced by those who extracted this vital resource during the Industrial Revolution.
Amazing experience! Had visited well over 20 years ago as a kid and it was great to come back and see the mine again. We didn’t tour where you go down the shaft and it was incredible, (you will need some degree of flexibility as there’s lots of ducking involved) The rest of the museum is equally impressive, lots to see and do and loads of great historical items. Really enjoyed the visit and would definitely recommend.

Great fun and something totally different! We went as a family of 4 (kids 8 and 11) and all had a fab time. The staff were all really friendly and knowledgeable, particularly the gentleman who took us down into the mines. We learnt a lot and really enjoyed being able to Immerse ourselves in such a big bit of the areas history.
Emma W — Google review
A thoroughly enjoyable day out. There was a quite a queue for the underground tour, but it was well worth it. Our guide, Mark, was brilliant. He really brought to life how it must have been to work down a coal mine, at the same time being funny and engaging. At one point he got the group to turn their lights off. It was amazing just how dark it actually was. A complete absence of light! Really great experience that I'd wholeheartedly recommend. It's not just for geeks...
Rich H — Google review
This was one of the best tours ive ever been on! The history was amazing to learn on the underground tour. Your not allowed any of your belongings on you in the mines, but the tour guides were amazing friendly happy to answer any questions and told the story amazingly it truly was a great experience to have and learn about. Definitely recommend a visit the gift shop was full of amazing goodies too!
Lauren L — Google review
This was an incredible experience and so much more than I expected!!! You can spend a long time just on what you get with only a small (£5) parking fee, but I highly recommend paying the small (£5 adult) fee to get to have an underground tour... it would have been well worth it for half the time, but for this, you get a full tour of approximately 50minutes, with an extremely knowledgeable and friendly guide, ours had worked mines for generations! The location by itself has stunning views around, and the free "King Coal" exhibit has an immersive and interactive experience, so you can get to see what it would have been like for the miners of the past should you not wish to head under yourselves. To top it all off is the free to enter bathhouse, which has more of what you'd expect from a museum (glass encased exhibits).
Elizabeth A — Google review
Despite the heavy rain, we enjoyed our visit. The underground tours were fully booked (due to school visits) which didn't matter too much because we had been a few years ago. It might be worth booking ahead - £8 per person instead of £5 on the day. I love reading all the miners' stories on the locker doors in the Miners' Bath House. All the buildings around the site are worth exploring. There's just so much to see. The museum in the bath House is very interesting - just the right amount of information to ignite your interest and want to read more as you wander around. My teenage boys found it very interesting as they had done when they were 7 and 10.
Cath H — Google review
We had a great time at this fab museum. Our guide was awesome. Hearing about the mine from someone who worked there really brought it to life. Would definately recommend it others. We visited on a the free weekend so it was busy with long queue times but even despite that all our group of 7 thought it was great.
EMMA — Google review
Friendly welcome, very informative and interesting exhibitions, definitelly recommended when in the area. Great source of local history. Entry is free, £5 for car park, which is is fair.

Blaenavon Ironworks is a well-preserved 18th-century industrial complex that includes a blast furnace and furnished workers’ cottages. The town of Blaenavon, which was established around the ironworks in 1789, transitioned into a coal town in the mid-1800s. It is now at the heart of the Industrial Landscape, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
On the first day of a two day visit, we looked at Caerphilly Castle (seriously recoomened). Then on day two, we came here. What an amazing contrast. Castle, lakes and knights verus blast furnaces, pig iron and toxic hell. Always, I wonder about the place of the ordinary person: Blaenavon is full of this. It led Hazel and I to look at life expectancy for the men and children who worked there. And what about those who lived in the cottages on site? The noise, the 24/7 operation of the site (presumably 2 12 hour shifts each and every day), the fumes. Sadly, on a bank holiday Saturday, there were very few others also visiting. Yes, industrial history seems less popular, but it has far more significance for our lives.
John N — Google review
It may not appeal to many people but there is a lot of history in this place. I was passing on the way back from Big Pit museum and took a chance and clad I did. In it's day, it was a large working employing many men and there families processing local coal, limestone and iron ore to make iron and later steel. New processes were tried here. There is a small shop, a visual display of the casting process and audio and guidebooks to guide you round. You can see the changes in the work mens cottages and view the whole sight from the top of the balancing tower. The guidebook also tells of the industrial heritage off the site and the changes in the landscape including the viaduct buried in a valley that once had houses in its arches. Worth a look
Ashley L — Google review
We found the Ironworks a fascinating experience, shedding light on the 18-19th century iron industry and working and living conditions of the workers. The audiovisual presentation allowed us to experience the hellish work. Recommended!
Shelley B — Google review
Me and my partner frequently visit wales cadw sites and this one was definitely one for the books the cottages that show the history so well are a treat to behold and they tell the full history we loved it!
Lauren L — Google review
A fascinating look back into history. You can only imagine the grim hellhole this must have been in its day. On a great welsh day the place is amazing to visit. The staff are knowledgeable and have an obvious interest in the place. Great to visit, would recommend to all.
Pete.I — Google review
Absolutely amazing place to visit whatever the weather. A little bit of rain or a heavy shower just adds to the atmosphere of the place. The workers' cottages are restored with furnishings to show them through the centuries. The audio visual presentation in the shed brings the ironworks to life. We have been here every time we come to South Wales and it never ceases to amaze me.
Cath H — Google review
Visited on a beautiful day after years of driving by. Staff were lovely and there was a lot more to see than I expected. Well worth a trip!
Jessie S — Google review
A small, but lovely site, run by Cadw. Pathways around the site are well maintained, but due to the nature of the site, some buildings are not accessible to wheelchairs. Lots of good historical information about the industrial revolution, it's impact on Wales and the importance of the iron industry. Really enjoyed our visit and the staff were fantastic. The site does have toilets, but they are just outside the main entrance. Well worth a visit.

Tourist information center
The Blaenavon World Heritage Centre is a must-visit destination for those interested in delving into the history of the town. It offers interactive exhibits that showcase the iron and coal industries, as well as a recreated Victorian-era classroom. The center serves as a central hub providing information about local attractions such as Big Pit National Coal Museum, Blaenavon Ironworks, and the Heritage Railway.
Great community center with amenities for all ages including a cafe, computer room, and a beautiful museau with one of the best interactive display sets that I have ever seen. I must do to start off your visit of the Great town.
Adrien P — Google review
It's something to do when you're in town but there really isn't very much there to see. There's three rooms in total, two of which are basically just for videos. I believe there is a library upstairs although we didn't go there. I think during school holidays they put things on for the kids which is nice. There is a cafe with wonderful views. we didn't try the food so can't comment on that. Nice enough for a free museum but id say realistically you'll only be there an hour or so.
Aimee R — Google review
Visit the visitor centre for good reasonably priced food and pick up some of the walking guides. We did the Iron Trail which followed the old tips back to the Iron Works. So much to see and do in this town, recommend a visit.
Marie B — Google review
It was good if you like trains. Was a bit disappointing. We paid £22 for two adult tickets (kids were free on this occasion). The journey seemed to go back and forth, rather than from point a to point b, but there wasn't anything to do at any of the stops. Journey lasted about an hour's and about 15-20 minutes of this was stationary to have pictures of the kids in the engine itself if you wanted to. Appreciate totally it's a volunteer run thing but we were just expecting something else after looking at the website and having done these trips before. Not saying don't go by any means, just don't expect too much
Bryan T — Google review
Welcoming centre. It has a cafe that we did not try and friendly staff.
Ema A — Google review
Epicentre of large scale industrial sites arising from the 1780s with iron foundries, leading onto the development of Bessemer steel production. One can see how the site began, understand the importance of Wales and it's claim to be the first industrial nation. The BBC TV series 'coal house' set in 1927 and 'coal house' at war set in 1944 were filmed here. Nearby are 'The Big Pit' and walks that explore the development of industrial sites from The Iron Age, the middle ages and the Industrial Revolution.
Stephen P — Google review
Great starting place for visiting the historic region. Lots of interesting and interactive displays including videos indoors and wind up audio boxes outdoors. It is a short drive or a few kilometres walk from the Big Pitt mines.
Google U — Google review
Blaernavon World Heritage Centre is in a converted building and explains the history of the are in connection with the production of iron ore. There are display boards and TV's showing you what it was like during this heavy industrial era. There is also a shop selling related items.

Located just under 2 miles northwest of the town center, Blaenavon Steam Railway offers an enjoyable heritage ride for railway enthusiasts. Originally built in 1866, the line operated as the main line for Big Pit until its reincarnation as a heritage railway in 1983. The scenic journey to Whistle Inn halt provides excellent views, and visitors can also explore Big Pit.
Excellent place! We were there for the transport festival, which unfortunately was largely affected by the rain and wind, but the railway was absolutely lovely! It was lovely to look around, and ride the trains, and we even walked up to Big Pit. Absolutely fabulous.
Lil_miss_57 — Google review
We booked to go on the Extinct Express, and what an experience! The staff were amazing as were the baby dinosaurs. There were facts and you could pet them if you wanted, and the staff got the adults involved too. We also got the experience of travelling on the steam train and being able to look at the engine! I cannot say enough how brilliant the staff were.

Blaenavon Workmen's Hall is a charming venue with a beautiful auditorium and magnificent stage. The bar area, though small, offers reasonably priced drinks. Visitors can also explore the small museum and enjoy a private tour to learn about the building's history. The staff and volunteers are friendly and create a welcoming atmosphere for various events, including theater productions and movie screenings. Additionally, the hall hosts dance events and provides well-stocked amenities such as a tuck shop.
Attended the venue for a Dan Bigger book launch. The staff who are volunteers were fantastic, and gave us a tour of the amazing building. And Dan Bigger is an amazing and humble man.

What an amazing venue. I've performed here many times but being an audience member let me take in all it has to offer. Fabulous organisation by front of house. There is a bar area, which is priced reasonably, though very small. The auditorium is beautiful and the the stage magnificent. Parking is a bit of a nightmare if you find walking a problem.

Lovely venue. Very clean and well stocked bar. Comfortable seats. We saw a local theatre production which was excellent and really good value for money.

Amazing hall and small museum. We visited while in the area on holiday. We had a private tour of the building by Terry a volunteer. He was excellent, brought the history to life. The people and workers of Blaenavon should be proud of its legacy and I hope it can continue to grow and find new rolls in the community for the next 120 years too.

For just £3.50, you receive a pint of delicious real ale, or if you're driving, they provide a bottle to take home. A fantastic place offering tours of the factory. You can see the old Mull hut and other storage areas, such as the hops hut. The railway bridge is so impressive and reminds me of a bridge in Cardiff at tge top end of Bute Street

A small brewery, friendly staff, and the opportunity to purchase local beer. The reception for tourists has been closed for about 5 years.
Oleg N — Google review
Called the brewery on a Monday morning regarding a complaint about the Manager and Staff member the previous day. I spoke to DAI the managing director. He confirmed he owned The Railway Inn in Nelson S. Wales and basically didn't want to know! I wonder if all 'tin pot" breres are like this.
Ivor F — Google review
Was in Wales for the weekend (live in Dunfermline, Scotland) and saw the brewery was local. Unfortunately the visitor centre was unexpectedly closed and I missed sampling the beers. After messaging them they sent a couple of beers for me to try. A++ customer service and unexpected. Will give them a try and definitely be making an order soon. Thank you.

Included in the price which is £3.50 you get a pint of real ale. If your driving they give you a bottle to take home. The bar was lovely with views over the mountains. The shop sold T shirts, jackets, mugs etc usually suveniour items which were not expensive. £7 a T shirt. If you wanted to purchase beer they was a good assortment. We were the only two people there. It's well worth a visit if your in the Blaenavon area

We went into the shop yesterday to purchase a selection of cheeses including their new Traditional Caerphilly cheese. We were given a detailed talk about how the Caerphilly cheese is made and the process they have to follow. The Caerphilly cheese itself was outstanding, really tasty and worth every penny it cost. We are looking forward to trying the butter they make later today on home made scones. I cannot recommend Blaenavon Cheese highly enough. Thank you xx

A unique shop in Braod Street Blaernavon called the Blaernavon Cheddar Co. The cheddar is matured in the nearby Big Pit because of the unique features of the tunnels. It is then processed and flavoured in the shop. In addition they sell lots of different drinks, relishes etc. They could make ideal gifts to take home. They have won lots of awards for their cheeses.
Valerie D — Google review
I don't generally post poor reviews, particularly to a small business. Booked a cheese tasting in 2020 Value £75 Understandably it was postponed due to covid. Tried to re-book several times (when I could get hold of them.) Absolutely impossible.... At one point was offered to sit on the pavement on the street to sample the cheeses. The company pledged to get in touch to honour my booking. We are now 2 years down the line and absolutely no communication back from them yet they were quick enough to take the money from our day out experience voucher. This company gives small independent business a bad name. Disappointing but now past reconciliation. Received a response via Facebook suggesting my feedback (based on my experience) was rude and even my fault! I'm genuinely disappointed to have to submit a negative review but the evasive then abrupt tone of the company speaks volumes.
Barry J — Google review
Can't say anything more positive about this amazing local Welsh cheese manufacturer. Aside the quality, taste, array of flavours the greeting and sincere desire to help is second to none. If you can't make it to their local shop try Morrisons! Had an amazing cheese night with my wife over Christmas 👏👏💯💯

Bodies of Water
Nestled near Blaenavon, Garn Lakes is a hidden gem that offers a serene escape into nature. This picturesque spot features two stunning lakes surrounded by lush countryside, making it an ideal location for leisurely strolls and wildlife watching. The area is home to diverse bird species, so don’t forget your binoculars to catch a glimpse of the feathered residents from the new wetland bird hide.
I have just recently found these wonderful Garn Lakes.. if you are familiar with Blaenavon and The Keepers Pond and The Big Pit, these lakes are in between both places. There is a reasonable size carpark, which is free, be aware of the drive into this carpark coming through a small lane, as there isn't any passing point to let a vehicle go past, so one of you will have to reverse.. I parked on the side of the road, there were already 3 cars there, it's quite safe and you have one of the entrances a few yards away from your car. There are 2 lakes, top and bottom.. it took me about an hour to walk around both, but I was strolling and taking in the amazing views and had a sit on one of the many benches scattered around the lake... It really is lovely here. There were a few people around, and some who were walking their dogs, had them on leads.. I think it is compulsory for the dogs to be on a lead, after reading a few of the reviews, as there is a a fixed fine if you are caught letting your dog run about, so this might be something to consider if you would rather a walk where your dog can have a run around. There are a few dog bins and litter bins around, but no toilets, and no cafe, unfortunately. Nevertheless, a lovely place for a quiet walk, quite a few birds to feed too, ducks, geese, etc, who absolutely loved the dried mealworm I fed them ... You won't be disappointed 👍

2 nice sized lakes for taking a short walk around 👣, to feed the ducks 🦆🪿 or go fishing 🎣(with appropriate license 🪪) with the Brecons 🏞️ as the backdrop.

Very lovely place for a walk (even on a wet day) found on the off chance of driving to Blaenavon and decided to stop for a walk. Found the car park and had a lovely stroll. Views were amazing and both lakes beautiful. Recommended and as local to me will become one of my go to walking areas.

A beautiful area that has two lakes which you can walk around. The largest lake has a pathos great for disabled users or pushchairs. The second top lake is passable but can get messy in wet weather... bring your boots. There is a pub nearby and the Blaenavon Steam train . Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on leads during the bird mating season.

Nice quite area to go for a walk with a couple small lakes, no toilets but lots of birds to feed if you bring something. The lower lake if fairly flat. There is a slope to get to the upper lake so is an oK walk if your aren't a

I must have ended up in a different place to the other reviews. The top lake is totally fenced off, so it looks like a wasteland, there's nothing to see up there. The bottom lake is full of angry fisherman who don't want your dog within 30 feet of them. No facilities

Lovely place to visit on a sunny day..Nice walk around the lake and seems to be popular with anglers. Nice smooth path all around the lake suitable for bikes and wheelchairs.

Pretty lake and surrounding areas. Strictly no dogs off lead so not recommended for anyone wishing for their dog to do what a dog should be able to do, run and sniff
