Ocean Beach Park in New London, CT is a top-rated destination with a 1/2-mile beach boardwalk offering an array of activities. It has been recognized as one of the best beaches by National Geographic and draws countless visitors all year long. The park features an Olympic-size pool, miniature golf course, playgrounds, cafe, amusement rides, arcade, and a stunning beach with warm sugar sand.
Wonderful!! So relaxing, next to windjammers restaurant. The parking attendant asked if we were here for the beach, $20 parking , or Windjammers, $ Free, umm say less! “Windjammers please!” So I got a delicious hot, buttered lobster roll. My husband got I don’t remember something spicy and then we got crab puffs… Food was great. The view was amazing! Beware of the seagulls they are ruthless! So then we just walked right over to the beach, which had very soft sand. It wasn’t crowded and this was on a Sunday. It was wonderful. My husband kept finding these cute little shellless crab things, and was having a great time finding them and putting them back in the water, we forgot to bring a pail and shovel, and my husband didn’t want to stop at the store, (Benny’s, my usual spot, has closed down 😞) as not to take up our beaching time. And lo and behold, someone has left a pail and two shovels by the trashcan in the parking lot! Bonus! I brought it over to my four-year-old and he was thrilled. We made Sandcastles and my husband used the bucket to collect his new little friends. No lifeguard, but it didn’t feel dangerous at all. Definitely going back!

Beautiful views with an extremely nostalgic-feeling boardwalk. Reminds me of the boardwalk scene in the movie Big. It was pretty quiet when I came here, so I honestly don’t know if they are overrun in the summer. But it sure is a peaceful stop during the fall months.

We love Ocean Beach!! Easy parking, clean beach, amusement park for the kiddos, park, pool, and a super awesome swimming hole for catching crabs!! We come twice a year at least. It's 30$ a car to get in, but it is so worth it!
James M — Google review
A clean beach to enjoy. Enough parking. There is a small amusement park for kids. Waterpark seems to be closed. Fee is 20$ after 6 pm.
Denuwan V — Google review
The water was full of dirt / seaweed and very cold until after a few lapse the cold goes away so long as you in the water. Wish It were cleaner and less rocky. The tiny rocks hurt my feet and the sand worked against me in terms of gravity. Ill find a cleaner one next time. The bathrooms were far off yet VERY CLEAN with someone constantly maintaining it. One of the 2 showers weren't working so we had to wait our turn and this made me catch a cold as I was freezing. The kids caught a cold too. It wasn't a great time. They had life guards too which was a great addition. As a mom who is not a great swimmer, knowing there are life guards gives me a tiny bit of hope for eventuality but I still Caution my daughters not to go too far. To stay where I can reach them if I need an emergency rescue. You can definitely go n sit around. They have an entire kids area like an amusement park.
Nana A — Google review
This is our families favorite CT beach! We love the boardwalk, ice cream shop and water slides. The beach is much cleaner and less rocky/broken shell-y than other CT beaches. I wish they banned smoking/vapping and enforced it though- it's my only complaint.
Meggin L — Google review
Clean water...lifeguards on duty. Unfortunately the last 2 yrs alot of F-bombs and LOUD BOOM BOXES with huge personal sound systems dominate the beach now. Used to be safe..semi-quiet with giggles from children..clean sight to the ocean..ALL age groups. NOW sift your fingers thru cigarette butts and bottle caps. Disgusting. Sorry not worth $180/year for parking -no $ break for nonresident seniors. I miss our beach!!!!! PARKING WILL GO UP. Daily parking is outrageous . Was great until it wasn't. Privately owned. It's supposed to be a Public Beach . Read the history outsourced for Management. $30 weekday parking.. $40 for weekend and $50 holidays. Sorry not worth it. There are other beaches just as nice that don't rob you. I've been coming for more than 20 years. Two weeks ago there was a violent confrontation on the boardwalk. How can you relax? Not enough food venues or choices. You would the think more visitors.. more money.. better bathrooms and choices. Nope and there are riptides so WATCH YOUR CHILDREN!!
Sharron D — Google review
$30 parking fee for weekdays and $40 for weekends. We went on weekday afternoon and it was not too busy. Water slide was not open yet. Amusement park rides are very old but cute. Great for young kids. Boardwalk was nice and new. Loved the splash pad and playground for kids. Pool was closed. Beach was beautiful and had a variety of different sea shells. Unfortunately, there was quite a lot of garbage (dirty tissue, cigarette butt, food wrappers) on the sand from people who did not use the garbage cans. Alewife Cove nature trail was nice and the water was shallow. It was great for wading in and seeing cute little crabs and hermit crabs in the water.

The Custom House Maritime Museum, operated by the New London Maritime Society, is a historic downtown building dedicated to showcasing the maritime history of New London. The museum offers lighthouse tours and exhibits artifacts related to local lighthouses and U.S. Customs. It also features a permanent exhibition on New London's involvement in the 1839 Amistad uprising.
This is such a great museum who has really made it their mission to preserve maritime enthusiasm among many varied visitors. The director Susan is superbly accomodating, doing her very best to ensure that a remarkable time is had by all. She went far out of her way to arrange a Harbor light tour for me on the tail end of an amazing excursion out to Little Gull Island Lighthouse. Her young volunteer who showed me the harbor light was also a remarkable asset to the program. I had such a wonderful day rejoicing in a hobby I love because of the dedication to excellence of this amazing staff. Thank you to all who keep the New London Custom House Museum thriving!

Katie was a wonderful guide. She helped us and gave us a lot of information on the local lighthouses. She also was able to stamp our lighthouse passports, even though the locations were private. We will definitely be back for lighthouse tours!

A great visit and a must-see in New England. The history of our port is amazing. Soon to be home to the U.S. Cosst Guard Museum. The town is in a revitaluzation mode. Come help her along. Great food.

Great museum about the history of New London, whaling, local lighthouses, and the Custom House itself. Upstairs exhibit on the Amistad also really interesting and moving. Tour guide Jim did an excellent job bringing everything to life!

Highly recommend a tour of the New London Harbor Light as well as the custom house Maritime museum. A lovely day ☺️

We heard good things so we were hoping to stop by and have a quick look before going back to the ferry with our baby. They won’t let you go through without a guide. I’m sure it’s more interesting when you can stop and hear the story of each exhibit since there’s nothing written down to read, just a collection of artifacts which is useless without the guide. I also guess we have to just take the guide’s word for all facts because there’s no corroborating evidence for anything they say. But either way we weren’t able to just walk through and take a look and it’s too much for us to hold our daughter for that amount of time and no room for a stroller so it’s not something that worked for us.

This is a very nice little museum with outstanding exhibits, particularly relating to the history of New London. It is a must see if visiting New London.

Fort Trumbull State Park and Museum in Connecticut is a historic coastal fortress that served as a major defense line on the eastern seaboard. The property, which opened as a state park in 2000, allows visitors to explore its grounds, artillery displays, restored living quarters, and a replica of the fort's retired research lab. The park offers stunning views of Thames River from the ramparts and fort, interactive exhibits at the visitor center, boardwalk strolls, and fishing on the pier.
Beautiful and peaceful place to relax, the surrounded areas were very clean and the grass well maintained!
Lyniris72 T — Google review
This is a massive fort rebuilt three times. The museum is very informative and interesting. It has an elevator so access if you are handicapped. You need your walking shoes to tour the fort and its surroundings. Watch your step on the circular stairwell going up and down. If you are too old or disabled don’t do it.
Thomas B — Google review
Nice park full of Connecticut history! Plenty of parking with paved walkways and ramps for wheelchair/walker access. There are picnic tables on the grass with water views and benches off the walkways. The park often has special events, like the docking of the USS Normandy prior to being decommissioned. There are restrooms in the Visitor Center and also at the bottom of the hill below the Fort close to the docks. There's a helpful video on their website that gives you a glimpse of what to look forward to at the park!
Thelma — Google review
This place is amazing. We get to see some history here. Not only did we enter the fort we got to board the coast guard ship was fun! The views in some areas were great as well. Definitely coming here again. 😊
Miss V — Google review
The history this place holds is amazing. The Fort itself is a great build and the views of the river are beautiful. Great place for a nice family picnic or fishing off the pier. Best part is it is a Connecticut State Park and free to the residents.

Very good history imformation. It was a capsule of American history it's long history from the war of Independence all the way to the cold war and naval history

Hard to find the entrance but really cool spot, would recommend walking through. there's restrooms by the pier and picnic tables around the fort itself, great for looking at the bay

Museums
The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, established in 1932, is a New London institution with a vast collection of over 17,000 objects from various historical periods and cultures. The museum's focus is on American art from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Visitors can explore traditional paintings, sculptures, Tiffany stained glass, and jewelry while learning about local history.
My wife really likes museums and more art in specific, so we stopped here. I really like the building. You can see that they invest time in any details. They have 2 exhibitions, but they're really nice. One of them were the crystal from Tiffany (sorry typos), a local NE artisan, and other ones a little bit alternative. I like this place and I'll recommend visiting it!.
Jorge V — Google review
Surprisingly good museum. American paintings, Tiffany designs, exhibit on China trade. These exhibits relate to the history of New London. Plan on 2 hours at least. Senior ticket is $9 in 2025.

We visited Lyman Allyn Art Museum as part of our CTRoadtrips YouTube channel excursions. We had a wonderful and informative experience viewing the Chinese porcelain exhibit, American perspective permanent exhibit and the Louis Comfort Tiffany exhibit. Staff were friendly and accommodating. HIGHLY recommend.

Amazing place!!! The entire place was so calm and beautiful, the art pieces looked very well taken care of, and the people that worked their were just so kind the entire time, 10/10
Ari — Google review
Actually went to see the Sweet Dreams exhibit, which was pretty cool. The desserts looked so real and beautiful. The rest of the museum was small. There were some nice paintings the rest I didn't really care for... which isn't important because everyone's eye is different. Overall it was nice to see the exhibit before it leaves and Tiffany at the front desk was very pleasant and helpful.
Ashanti L — Google review
This is a gem of a small but Worthy museum. Most of the museum has a focus on the history and culture of New London and Southeastern Connecticut. The layout of the galleries is done thoughtfully and I enjoyed the descriptions of the artwork. The gallery on Louis Comfort Tiffany was a especially interesting and well done. The current exhibit on the artist, Marchi, is quite impactful, as I do lean in to abstract expressionism. It looks like they have great programming for young people as well.
Susan J — Google review
Excellent exhibits were being shown when we visited (Tiffany was one). Very friendly customer service there too. Picnic tables were outside for seating with outdoor art to enjoy as well. We were happy we stopped.
Danielle R — Google review
Loved this art gallery; it was a perfect way to escape the cold weather and see traditional paintings and sculptures. I loved seeing the beautiful Tiffany stained glass and jewelry on display and learn more about their local history in New London. Must visit if you're a local art fan!

The Garde Arts Center, Inc. is a non-profit performing arts center located in New London since 1985. Housed in a historic movie palace dating back to 1926, the venue features a restored Moroccan interior with expanded lobbies. It offers live performances, cinema screenings, and special events with its state-of-the-art digital cinema and surround-sound system.
The Garde is one of my favorite places to go for affordable live performances. There's not a bad seat in the house and the concessions won't cost you an arm and leg. This is a perfect venue for date nights, solo nights out or outings with family and friends!
Victoria B — Google review
We saw Black Violin here and we had an incredible experience! All the staff have very detailed directions to our seats. The snack attendant was very friendly. Bathrooms were clean and popcorn was tasty.

Very easy to find & plenty of parking on a Saturday. Easy to check in, pleasant staff and Very nice size. Not a bad seat in the house.
Christina K — Google review
I had the luck of being a band support member here for the ELO tribute, Evil Woman and thus, this was my personal experience. A beautiful Vaudeville theater built in 1926. Awesome acoustics, huge stage. An authentic theater in all its glory. You don't see many of these art deco gems left, so it's a real treat to see the place shine with lights and music. The whole place had a great vibe, I was impressed with not only the beautiful venue but also the acoustics. The secret sauce is always behind the curtain, tho. The house staff here are the real stars, Queen Charlotte and Sara(h?) really made the green room feel like a home away from home. The back of the house staff was impeccable in every way. Everyone I met was courteous, helpful and professional. It was a great experience to see the place from the front and then the back of the house here. I'll remember it for a long time to come. Highly suggest, would suggest again.
Aaron — Google review
What a gem and a historical landmark! I have never experienced a more beautiful, clean, and even spacious theater ever! When one is in consideration of just how old this theater is, it is amazing. The only thing to exceed this is the acoustics and the hospitality of the staff! I look forward to returning very soon!
James W — Google review
My daughter attended the Summer on Stage program, and she had a blast. I highly recommend the Summer on Stage. The Center is beautiful and offers many wonderful shows.
Kristin B — Google review
The lady who scanned my ticket was nice. I didn't interact with any other staff member during my time here. Beautiful interior and the performance area is amazing! The seats were comfy!
Jonathan D — Google review
We attend a show here at least once a year. Parking is always a challenge in the city. Bathrooms are clean and well stocked every time I have needed one. Concessions often sell out so you should purchase at the start of a show instead of hoping to get something during an intermission. Coat check has been available in the past and I have never used it so not sure if it is still available. Two levels of seating, I prefer the upper level but have sat in the lower level before.

The Connecticut College Arboretum is a beautiful and serene space open to the public every day from dawn until dusk. It offers opportunities for recreation, conservation, teaching, and research. With over 750 acres of plant collections, it provides interactive virtual maps for visitors to explore its various features. The arboretum is known for its pleasant and quiet atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for bird watching and leisurely walks.
This place is such a little treasure. This place is so well-maintained. It's stunning. There are so many different types of trees here and they are labeled so you can get an idea of what type of trees that you're looking at. There are several loops in this place that you can loop around different sections. The main loop is around the pond but there's other shoots so you can spend a couple hours here just wandering around checking out the different things. The trails are well maintained. You may get turned around a little only because there are so many loops but just keep your eye on the pond and you won't get lost. I recommend thisplace. It's very easy walk. My friend and I walked around for about an hour and a half half or so just taking in all of the scenery. We definitely plan to come back here in May or June when the mountain is at its peak because there is so much mountain Laurel here. I think that will be stunning at this time of year. I also want to come back in September October to watch the colors of the leaves change. The parking is off street parking. There are signs for two hour parking. I did not see any charged parking, but it looks like you can park on both sides of the roads up and down the street.

This looks like a place I would have loved to attend college. Beautiful campus and grounds. The Arboretum offers a nice serene place to chill or study in nature!
Joshua M — Google review
Absolutely stunning in the fall! There are so many beautiful trees to look at any time of year, but they are especially beautiful right now at different stages of turning colors. We also found a lot of mushrooms that were fascinating to look at, and loved learning about the different kinds of trees there. Highly recommend for a family walk or a place to picnic or read/study!
Sophia J — Google review
Situated directly across from Connecticut college in new london is this hidden green gem! Beautiful year round, great for a quick stroll or all day. Bring a picnic, a book, binoculars or crafts! Seating is very limited but my favorite is the single wicker chair hidden down by the pond that moves around. My second favorite is there is no jogging allowed lol. So relax people. Enjoy.
Anita H — Google review
A great oasis just at the junction of Conn College, New London and Waterford. Take a quiet stroll or picnic. Check to various tree species and possibly see some wildlife. Free to enter and spend a few minutes or the day. If you are lucky you will catch a Shakespearean play on the grass.
Jeffrey D — Google review
A great place for a walk. If you have an interest in the local flora, you will find the name plates for selective trees and plants useful. Don't forge to visit the lily pond.
Richard L — Google review
The Connecticut college arboretum is very pleasant and quiet. Easy walk and hiking boots are not needed. It can be a little muddy in spots. Parking is easy. Great place for bird watching. However, the most important thing to know is WEAR BUG SPRAY AND LOTS OF IT. I was slathered with Deep Woods Off from head to toe and I was still attacked by deer flies and mosquitoes. Did I mention you should wear bug spray? Not just any old spray. You need commercial grade deet and or protective clothing like burlap and mosquito netting.

Captain Scott's Lobster Dock is a renowned seafood shack located along the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. It is famous for being the birthplace of the hot lobster roll, also known as the 'Connecticut style' lobster roll. The menu features a variety of seafood options, with the hot lobster roll being the most popular choice. Other favorites include homemade clam fritters, New England and Rhode Island chowder, and fish and chips.
Its always great when traveling and you stumble into a wonderful culinary experience. Captain Scott's provided that. I loved the setting by the docks with a view looking west over the boats and docks. But the real star was the fresh food! I ordered NE Clam Chowder and Fish and Chips (Cod). The cod was flakey and perfect! If you are still hungry there is delicious ice cream, and big pieces of pie. I highly recommend trying any of their seafood. It all looked delicious.

I had a lovely lunch here with my father. We ordered a garden salad with lobster and fried calamari. We enjoyed sitting outside and looking out to the harbor. The food was tasty, but there were few gluten-free options. The service was a bit slow but good overall. We walked here from the train station, which was a bit tough but well worth it. The location is convenient, with plenty of parking, excellent restrooms, and a lovely gift shop.
Arik B — Google review
The food was good and great portions! The line can be pretty long but the food comes out pretty quick once you order! The fried oysters and calamari were good. And the lobster rolls were great, just don’t forget to get the extra butter, it was needed it! But the view of the dock is so pretty to look at while sitting and eating!
Abhisha J — Google review
Def tucked away little gem for sure! Ignore the scenery while getting there…trust the GPS and my review! 🤣 I am not a fish person but the FISH AND CHIPS look amazing and people rave about it! Parking is plenty and always expect a line 🤣 We have been here multiple times and zero issues. Lines are fine which means high turn over! FISH IS FRESH! My wife got the fish and chips as well as a shrimp cocktail and she could not stop talking about! I just got a cheeseburger and hot dog…all cooked well! They did mess up our order WHICH IS FINE bc they were slammed and they are human. They handled their mess up in a timely and professional manner. I treated them with respect and they gave it right back. This is a nice place to eat and hand before you jump on the ferry back to the island! They also serve ice cream which looks great but we never have room 🤣
Jason P — Google review
I ordered the small hot lobster roll. It was delicious! I also ordered some fried scallops to go, so I have not eaten them yet. I already know they'll be amazing because nothing beats fresh seafood! I ate here on a chilly, fall day, but it was worth it. Very friendly staff. Beautiful view of the marina & the water. Bonus- you can become a Disney princess if the birds are brave enough to take food from your hand.
Ruby D — Google review
This place is great! I’m a big fan of lobster shacks and always try to stop at one when I get the chance. We found this spot while searching for a quick lunch during a drive and it turned out to be lovely. It’s clean and charming with no birds around the tables. They also run a fish market next door which is promising. Most of what we tried was excellent. The New England chowder was rich and delicious, we ordered it in a bread bowl but I’d go for a regular bowl next time since the bread soaked up too much of the soup. Just a personal preference. The clam fritters were amazing: crispy, very flavorful and perfect on their own without any dipping sauce. But the highlight of the meal was the salad with lobster. You can choose it cold or warm. We went with cold and it was incredibly fresh and a true generous portion. Absolutely worth it. The only disappointment was the steamed mussels which were a bit overcooked and served with unsalted clarified butter (why?). I wouldn’t recommend them. All in all a fantastic stop. I would go again.
JC — Google review
This was a really nice place! Getting to it was through a little sketchy street but their entire property was very nice. We waited in line maybe 10 minutes on a Thursday afternoon but it felt quicker. The food was delicious! My only complaint was that I ordered the fried shrimp dinner (which says it comes with red potatoes or fries and coleslaw) and asked for no coleslaw. When I got my order it was just the shrimp and no fries or other side dish. I hadn’t chosen to receive my receipt when I paid so I couldn’t double check what I paid for. I went back up and asked the lady at the pickup window and she said it doesn’t come with a side. I pointed to the sign and said it says it comes with fries and coleslaw and I just didn’t want the coleslaw and she just kind of shrugged her shoulders and said sorry but the check they see doesn’t say fries included. Maybe I didn’t pay for the meal and just got some side order of shrimp but I didn’t see that on the menu and for $60 for 2 people it seems like I paid for the meal. Other than that the shrimp and the onion rings my friend had were wonderful! We got ice cream at the end that was also tasty and right in the same building too. Besides that one issue we had an excellent time and would come back.

We went today and had server Allen, who was phenomenal. Views were great , food was delicious and pricing was fair . We did not get dessert but it looked incredible! FYI : Parking is on the street.

Beautiful waterfront restaurant. We had no expectations as we were just hungry from a day of travel and surprisingly everything was delicious! The calamari and lobster mac are two must-try's! Our server Jose was really kind and thorough. The fish and chips were so good I wish there was more. Highly recommend a sunset dinner. We found parking on the street, about a three minute walk.

Our family of 4 enjoyed a delicious dinner at On The Waterfront. We ate on the deck and had a beautiful view of the water and boats. Our server was quite attentive, friendly, and professional. We started with a basket of bread and butter, chicken wings, and French onion soup. Our entrées were great. We finished our meal with an amazing slice of pistachio cake!

The shrimp are delicious and so are the drinks! The bread was incredible too! All the food was excellent! Would come back for sure!!! Highly recommend if in the area and needing a good place! Parking is all over but you’ll get there!

Great place to sit by the water and enjoy a meal. We ordered the fish tacos and the scallops and fries. Pretty good. The scallops were local and had a sweet taste. The coleslaw is ok but needed a little more flavor. I appreciated the option for mocktinis. My non-alcoholic mojito was good. The server we had was awesome. Very attentive. Posted a few pics of the view of the marina

Nestled in New London, the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse is a charming piece of history that dates back to 1773. Originally known as the Union School, this quaint one-room schoolhouse served as a classroom for none other than Nathan Hale himself from 1774 to 1775, shortly after he graduated from Yale at just 18 years old.
Full disclosure: I didn't walk in because it was closed, and just happened upon it so it was not my destination. BUT, this is a cool little building that was preserved and built around. Nice backstory is posted on the building about it's namesake Nathan Hale. Worth a visit to see a 250+ year old building!
Alan S — Google review
This small but significant red clapboard schoolhouse offers a fascinating glimpse into Revolutionary-era education. Dating back nearly 250 years, it's where Nathan Hale, Connecticut's famous Revolutionary War hero, once taught before his fateful spy mission. The building features authentic colonial architecture with its gambrel roof and symmetrical design. When open, visitors can explore two floors including a reconstructed 18th-century classroom and try writing with quill pens. Note: Currently displays a "Temporarily Closed" sign. The schoolhouse is maintained by the Sons of the American Revolution and relies on volunteer docents. It's located in the downtown Parade plaza area, which underwent renovation in 2010. Worth visiting when it reopens for its historical significance and educational value. The building has been moved six times throughout its history, making its preservation story almost as interesting as Nathan Hale's own legacy.

Hygienic Art is a real New London gem! I had a Bank Street engagement session with one of my wedding couples in the area. We stopped by, but unfortunately we missed the art park's open hours. We still managed to take some photos on the outside though. I can't wait for the chance to go back and visit!

Beautifully placed and spaced... When the weather is very cool with just the right breeze, it's magic. A variety of seating choices - as well as fair sized dance floor in front of the stage. Staff here? Always charming and attentive :) The aucostics are not only well balanced but also well considered as far as levels of sound for all concerned.

I came here for a concert that was held outside, and what a cool venue! The sound was good, the dance area was nice, great amount of seating and room to move around, the bar had a wide selection. As for the art gallery half, I did a walk through and there were some really interesting pieces. I like what this place stands for and I love that it supports local artists!

Hempsted House, located in New London, Connecticut, is a historical house museum consisting of two listed residences from the 17th and 18th centuries. The landmark includes the home of Joshua Hempsted, whose diary provides valuable insight into colonial life in New England. The property also sheds light on the history of Northern slavery and its contemporary implications. The main house was built around 1678 and has been home to the Hempsted family for nearly 300 years.
Wonderful historic location with an amazing staff to tell the Hempstead story. You almost feel like you knew the Hempsteads by the time you leave. They also host events very frequently. Fun for all ages. Don't miss out.

Stephanie L — Google review
I have to admit that I am a docent at the Hempstead museum, so I am biased. This is a wonderful historic property in the heart of New London, itself a city steeped in history. The wood house was built in 1659 with an addition in 1728. The stone house was built by Arcadian refugees in 1759. The Hempsteads lived in this house until 1940.....nearly 300 years of family history. This house has seen the growth of the American colonies, the birth of the American Republic, and endured generations of struggle, toil, conflict, and triumphs. The houses have been restored to their colonial appearances and we have outfitted the rooms in a manner that would have made Joshua Hempstead (the third resident of the house) feel quite at home. We are a member of Connecticut Landmarks and have a Facebook page which we update with events.

New London Ledge Lighthouse, built between 1906 and 1909, is a three-story granite and brick structure with eleven rooms. Managed by the Ledge Lighthouse Foundation, this over-100-year-old lighthouse offers tours inside and houses a museum showcasing local waterfront artifacts. Originally named Southwest Ledge Light, it was renamed in 1910 to avoid confusion with another lighthouse. The United States Coast Guard took over in 1939 and automated the light in 1987.
New London Ledge Lighthouse was built in 1909 on the southwest ledge at the mouth of New London Harbor. It was originally called the Southwest Ledge light, but this caused confusion with Southwest Ledge Light in New Haven, Connecticut, so it was renamed New London Ledge Light in 1910. The United States Coast Guard took over in 1939 upon its merger with the Lighthouse Service, and the light was automated in 1987

Unbelievable and memorable experience here!! The tour guides were fantastic, the boat ride trip out and back was very enjoyable, the weather was perfect, and there was plenty of informational material in the form of posters and other readings, artifacts, souvenirs, mementos, etcetera within the lighthouse to peruse for your discovery!! Unbelievable, scenic views presented a capstone to this day! Would definitely recommend everybody go at least once! Thanks for a very enjoyable 2 hours! 👍✌️☺️🥂

We passed close to the New London Ledge Lighthouse on the New London to Orient Point. Close enough to take pictures and enjoy the view. It looks nothing like any other lighthouse I've seen. This is a red brick and granite building in the French Second Empire style. The cast-iron lantern rises from the center of the building's mansard roof. New London Ledge Lighthouse was built in 1909 on the southwest ledge at the entrance to the New London Harbor. The United States Coast Guard took over in 1939 upon its merger with the Lighthouse Service and the light was automated in 1987. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. New London Ledge is locally famous for the ghost of an early keeper named Ernie who allegedly haunts the lighthouse. The Coast Guard crew on duty at the lighthouse reported unexplained knockings taking place at night, as well as doors opening and closing repeatedly, the television turning on and off by itself sporadically, and the unexplained removal of sheets from beds. We couldn't see Ernie at 6:45 this morning. Maybe he sleeps in?

Still as good if not better than I remember when I came as a Conn College student years ago. I ordered the Irish latte and bacon egg and cheese on croissant, delicious! We sat on the patio with the water views 😍Amazing

What a gem of a cafe! It's so bright and beautiful, with a lovely view of the ferry and train station. And the staff are absolutely the loveliest! We tried the croissant omelet and grilled cheese, along with some coffee, and everything was delicious. The pricing felt reasonable, especially compared to metropolitan cities, though it might be a tad high for locals. We visited on a Saturday morning, which made parking easy – that could be more challenging on a busy weekday. Good to know it was the only spot open at 9:30 AM that day, as most places seemed to open around 11 AM! Bon appétit and keep giggling!😂 🥐🍳🥯☕️

The New London Public Library is absolutely fantastic! This library clearly knows how to combine community, fun, and learning in the most creative way possible. It's a wonderful library unless you have a service dog. Unfortunately a particular arrogant janitor will rudely bombard you as soon as you sit down, with his narrow minded opinion on why your dog should not be allowed in the building. Even after being presented with evidence his rant continued and became even more aggressive. This took place less than 2 feet from Security, which she simply ignored Security is almost worse in some ways. She has absolutely no knowledge of any ADA laws and frankly does not care to learn. Once upstairs the staff is very nice and respectful it's just a few that make for a very unpleasant experience.
Ms M — Google review
I went to the library to get a library card. Staff was friendly. The area was quiet at a time. It wasn’t too many places to sit that would be peace and quiet so I was there for about 20 minutes when a bunch of kids came in on the face on doing FaceTime, talking on the phone loud making noise. I packed up and left. Staff didn’t even tell the kids to quiet down. It was horrible. I would never go to this library again.
M W — Google review
Only open 9:30 AM to 1PM this makes it impossible to visit at all. Any normal person who works 8 to 5PM will never get a chance to visit. What's the point of a public library if it's never open to the public? :( I'm Sad.

Yadi M — Google review
I understand New London is in the midst of gentrification and pushing out the “unsightly” human beings who have no housing due to this state’s disgusting housing policies but its completely asinine how security walks around like prison guards. I have lived in New London 25 years and the library was ALWAYS welcoming to EVERY WALK OF LIFE. The past few months every time I come, my biggest discomfort is not the homeless in here clearly finding a respite, its the security walking around jangling keys, looking over peoples shoulder and “doing rounds”. Today I was taking some notes on the table and the security guard shoved the chair in next to me *with her foot* and shook the whole table. When I looked up startled she rolled her eyes and kept walking. Its very obvious that compassion for peoples circumstances are nonexistent to the point they just assume everyone in there in the early afternoon hanging out MUST be homeless (and therefore they are absolved of upholding basic human decency). I mean the sheer disdain and indifference on her face when I looked up shocked that she would do something so demeaning and callous was unnerving. Its a library ffs, it shouldnt feel like walking into the county jail.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of historical artifacts, documents, and photographs related to naval history and submarines. Visitors can explore informative exhibits and ancient relics showcasing the area's nautical heritage.
Wow! This museum which is well maintained is FREE in admission! So much learning if you are interested in submarines. Gift shop inside . See images for reference.

This is a huge museum including the first nuclear sub the Nautilus. This is a two story museum with lots of displays. Some were hands on like the scope. The Nautilus shows just how cramped sub life would be. When I was in Personnel man school in Bainbridge, Maryland in 1968 a sub sailor came to our class and tried to recruit us for sub duty. We had to extend for two more years. I briefly considered it but did not volunteer. When I saw the size of the bunks I’m glad I did not.

Definitely an underrated experience. Very impressive museum with a wealth of information and exhibits. Well recommended for enthusiasts and families alike! Free admission. No food or restaurant but good options near by. Allow 2 hours or more to tour the submarine (20 to 30 minutes) and watch a few movies and exhibits.

What a great experience at the Submarine Force Museum! We had a great time and learned a lot about the Silent Service. Outside the museum there are multiple submarines to view and inside the museum you’ll find educational video shows, old control consoles with operational switches, working periscopes and many other exhibits ranging from the revolutionary war thru today. However, the highlight is the self-guided tour of the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine. There is access to multiple decks and gives you an idea what life on a submarine would be like. All experiences and access to the museum is free except the boat tour which goes down the river to see the forts and where today’s submarines are made. Great experience for the whole family!
Ryan P — Google review
Actually a 4.5 or so. As a former submariner I would love to give the museum paying homage to my branch of Naval service a full five stars. BUT as my master chief from many years ago would tell me "if I give you a perfect score you'll have no incentive to do better". (Paraphrased with all profanity deleted). I just believed that with such a colorful past, there could have been more than WW2 and Cold War services. Peacetime losses? It seems like the thresher and scorpion deserve their own display.

Excellent food and atmosphere We were attending a show at The Garde arts center and went for dinner prior to the show. Informed them we had a show to make and they had our apps salad and meal done in a timely manner to make the show. If you are planning on doing this give yourself at least 90 minutes so as to be able to enjoy the meal. All our meals were excellent. 5 of us and no complaints about any of the meals. Swordfish special was excellent and had great sauce and finish....others had the gnocci with chicken as well as the spagetti bolognese. Have been there numerous times and never have had a bad meal.

So beautiful! So many places to explore and paths to take! The beach is beautiful! And the staff at the booth were so kind and gave us a rundown since it was our first time there! If you are planning to visit, know that the beach is no swimming. Its for wading and fishing. Visiting second time. Such a scenic spot at seashore. There are small beaches but swimming is not allowed here(no lifeguard). A must visit place to sit and relax on the vast greenland at oceanfront. There is a Mansion and a small garden adjacent to it. A lot of picnic areas with grills and nice tables available, making it a group picnic spots. There is a rest rooms just where the parking lot starts. Lots of trees and shady place which is great in a sunny warm day. Overall, we had a great visit. Some people parked at the park gate itself (probably to avoid parking fee of $10) but if you are CT registered car, it’s free to park inside like all other CT state parks.

Visited a few times from Saratoga Springs. If you’re from out of state $15 to enter the park which is a steal. Pack a picnic and enjoy the day. Access to beach. Large grounds with charcoal bbqs. Loved the tour of the mansion on the grounds & always enjoy the gardens. They’re absolutely stunning

Absolutely beautiful park that has some amazing scenery. I have come here several times in past few years to walk the dogs but this last time was better than all the rest. I proposed to my partner and couldn’t have picked a better place. Highly recommend the views of the ocean, mansion and nature. Take your time and bring your loved ones to enjoy this slice of magnificence.

Cross Sound Lighthouse Cruises offers an opportunity to explore the waters while delving into the history of Long Island and Southern New England. On these sightseeing tours, you can relax on high-speed climate-controlled vessels. The Classic Lighthouse Cruise showcases nine lighthouses, forts, and more, while the Lights & Sights Cruise features stunning architecture alongside lighthouses. Aboard the SeaJet catamaran, you'll encounter eight unique lighthouses and hear captivating stories from a knowledgeable narrator.
I enjoyed the Classic Lighthouse Cruise. The narrator did a fabulous job of speaking clearly so that you could understand what was being said. I was sitting on the top deck outside and didn't have any issues understanding what was being said. The narrator was very informative about all the lighthouses and the surrounding areas that we cruised through. It's worth the 2 hour cruise to see and experience the history of the area in a different way.
Heather H — Google review
This is an absolutely wonderful lighthouse cruise. It is narrated, there is a bar/snack shop on the ship, restrooms, and 3 decks to choose from! I'd do this activity again, anytime!!!!
Sports C — Google review
The ship approached all the lighthouses as closely as possible. On the lower deck there are windows that are about 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall so you have a wide open view. The ship is piloted so that it spins around at its point of closet approach so all sides get a good look at the lighthouses. The guide doing the chatting has good notes on all of the local history for each stop. Very interesting stuff. From 8 yo to 61 we all had a good time.
Bill F — Google review
The Lights and Sights Cruise was awesome! We had a perfect day for it. Got to see beautiful scenery, several lighthouses and lots of nice houses. Second level outside was a nice place to sit. At the sites, they turn the boat around so everyone has a chance to see without having to move. Only complaint is that the speakers are old and hard to hear clearly unless you’re inside.
Rodney K — Google review
Very interesting way to spend your time, either as a final destination or if you're waiting fo the Block Iskand ferry. You'll see a number if really cool lighthouses and hear interesting stories about them. The only improvement I would suggest is to stream the commentary via headphones. With the noise of the engine, wind, and water it was difficult to hear at times
Eva B — Google review
This was a great cruise that covered a lot of locations. Prior to the cruise itself I looked over the route that is taken and was impressed at the distance travelled in a two hour tour, but when the ship can go at a fast pace of 27 knots I can see how it’s done. It’s got some serious horsepower. When not tearing across Long Island sound (very very smoothly I must say) the captain stopped at the places of interest to give people a good chance to look things over and take pictures, turning the boat around slowly so that people sitting on both sides can get a view. The trip was well narrated. The food counter had a good array of food and beverages at a reasonable price. If you are looking for things to do while in New London or its surroundings this lighthouse cruise is a great option.
Phil K — Google review
I was in town for the Ocean Beach half marathon and after the race and a few hours soaking in rays on the beach decided to jump on this tour. It was a great decision. It was about 75 degrees that day so it actually got kinda chilly when the boat started speeding up! We saw about 7 lighthouses. The tour guide is this old dude that really loves his job and told great stories of the light houses and the history. The drinks on the ship was great! Clean bathrooms and plenty of seating.
Gyamfua G — Google review
Absolutely lovely time. Highly recommend to all tourists in the area! I want to bring my parents! this tour covers many sites and is very comfortable! Gorgeous photos. They spin the boat around each lighthouse so that you can stay in your seat and see everything. They also explain a lot of folklore and history of the area.

Absolutely five stars! The original earthworks are still there, as well as a tunnel the American militia used in vain to retreat. The museum has many artifacts from warriors in this battle, as well as an accurate model of the battle. The Tower, stretching high into the sky, was quite the climb, but the view was incredibly beautiful and worth every step! Even if our legs felt like Jell-O afterwards!😂😂
Jacob J — Google review
The grounds are very walkable and parking is pretty easy to find along the access way to the monument. Most of the preserved grounds are out in the open air with no protection from inclement weather. There are several interpreted markers posted on the original location of Fort Griswold. The grounds can be viewed from above by climbing steps inside the memorial marker next to the little museum on the property. All in all it makes one appreciate the dedication and commitment of the early settlers from New England who resisted English rule.

A historical place of interest indeed. But even if you are not interested in history , it’s a scenic spot with a breathtaking view from the top of the tall Groton monument with 166 steps, standing since 1830. A vast battlefield beside Thames river will also make you fall in love. There’s a museum adjacent to the monument and both are open from Memorial Day through Labor Day (Wed to Sun 9 AM to 5 PM).

A brave but futile defense of this vital port during the Revolutionary War. The vastly outnumbered Colonists did their best but were overwhelmed by the British led by notorious traitor Benedict Arnold. He did not get the generalship he wanted so the British gave him a generalship. He was actually in charge of the two separate attacks on this fort and Fort Trumbull across the river.

We've previously enjoyed the hop on, hop off harbor cruise, but "Mohegan Life on the Massapequatuck" was our first historical boat tour. We couldn't have been more satisfied with the crew or program. Our lecturer, Beth "Morning Deer" Regan, shared several fascinating stories about the history and culture of the Mohegan Tribal Nation. It was both a joy and honor, one which I highly recommend. We enjoyed this tour so much that we plan to do some of the other historical boat tours on the Thames being offered this summer.

Lynne D — Google review
My four years at Connecticut College was a pretty good oppurtunity to figure out exactly what is wrong with the academic system in America. You can read about Professor Pessin's ill treatment for criticizing Hamas, elsewhere, and my personal "enlightenment" has not left me loving the college from a personal level as well. After expressing opposition to abortion in a class which I was unceremoniously heckled out, I got the distinct pleasure of having a series of rumors spread by students and our irresponsible professors about me somehow finding out which students had gotten abortions(I honestly have no clue how one would even go about this)and going around personally harassing them. No, harassment at this campus is a tactic reserved for the privileged group that more and more dictates what can and can't be said in this stifling, anti-intellectual, echo chamber. If you share the standard "academic" left system of beliefs, and want to have people congratulate you on how wonderful you are for four years, you would have a great time here. If you don't think dissent is some kind of hate crime, however, you would probably be better off somewhere with a view of free speech a little more ahead of the 14th century. Of course, none of this would be possible without an administration willing to allow if not blatantly encourage these witch hunts. After going through a rather idiotic class where I had to have these rather incredulous accusations being bandied about as truth by my professor, I got to sit through increasingly inane conversations with various administrators who similarly were unable to comprehend that people exist in the world that do not parrot their beliefs, and that these people aren't amenable to being treated like some kind of bottom feeder. My favorite experinece in this mind numbing parade of hypocrisies was my conversation in which a member of the "Office of Institutional Equity and Inclusion" told me that the solution to the rather abhorrent treatement meted out to me by by faculty was to "find people who think like me". This was actually the best advice I ever got from admin, who never denied nor denounced that I was being harassed by faculty members. They are, after all, too busy making public statements on carbon taxes, a hillarious fact when one considers that colleges are generally exempt from taxes, and the school president is a flutist, not a climate scientist or economist, so I'm not sure why anybody should really care.

Wow. I liked it here a lot. It was clearly built in like the 1940/50’s and still really has that vibe about it. Great space. Everything you could need for a gift. Connected to a liquor store with cute local wines. Highly recommend this place when looking to buy a present for like your mothers birthday or something. Gorgeous fresh custom bouquets. We were recommended this place by another florist in the area when they didn’t have the exact item we were looking for. This sweet little lady greets me and informs me that they don't have the filler flower I'm looking for, but by this point I'm completely distracted by all the chocolates lol. I asked for pricing of the chocolates and bought $33 worth lol. The same sweet lady explains to me that she has other filler flowers that might work for my son's boutonniere and leads me to the back where I get to see the most beautiful large colorful roses and flower arrangements. She breaks off some pieces of her filler flowers and just gives them to me for free. This whole experience was magical!! Thank you for your kindness

Old Town Mill, also known as Winthrop Mill, is a historic grist mill located by Briggs Brook that dates back to 1650. Despite being burned down during a raid in 1781, the mill was rebuilt and still retains some original elements. This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers a glimpse into Connecticut's industrial history.
370 years of history, hidden under the towering I-95 travel lanes. Unfortunately, the mill building was locked with no signage as to 'open' hours. Still, a nice peaceful place to sit down, listen to the running water and reflect on the past.
Stan C — Google review
The Old Town Mill was originally built in 1650 by John Winthrop Jr., the founder of New London and later the Governor of Connecticut. Listed on the National Historic Register, the Mill is one of the oldest industrial sites in Connecticut. On September 6, 1781, General Benedict Arnold burned the mill down during his raid on New London. The mill was rebuilt soon after on the original site.

Somebody needs to do some thing with this place. This is an old historic mill, in New London Connecticut. It is being allowed to fall apart. The street people, And the attics in the area love to frequent this place. It’s a shame to see an old historic site like this go into such disrepair. They should either restore it or have it moved somewhere else, or give them to somebody that will give it some love. Hard to get to, no place to park,And sketchy people hanging out. Be safe when you try to see this place.

Not much to review. Yes, the structure still stands. No, there is no entity providing tours or exhibitions. In a way, the looming shadows of 95 keep this landmark preserved. Nothing else can be built there, so keeping a charming piece of history tucked away there always felt appropriate to me.

Park
Bates Woods Park, located in New London, spans 95 acres and offers a range of amenities for visitors. The park features a newly renovated playground, three baseball fields, open play areas, and picnic pavilions. Additionally, there are trails for leisurely walks and restrooms available on-site. Families can enjoy picnics under the large pavilions while children explore the well-maintained playscape with rubberized matting for safety.
Family friendly park with a pretty property , track field etc! Restrooms are usually locked though.

My daughter rented a pavilion, use of the indoor bathroom, use of the park, use of the BBQ, and use of garbage cans. I can't remember what the price was, because I didn't pay for it, I don't want to quote incorrectly. There's plenty of parking, large indoor bathroom with plumbing, a nice sized playscape for little children. We had maybe 8 picnic tables to set up. It rained a little that day, and we still all had a great time!
Cara D — Google review
The kids enjoy the playground and the area is always pretty clean, there is a lot of traffic to the animal shelter through the parking lot.

Beautiful Ballpark! Well maintained grounds.
Jeanne C — Google review
We had a great time using one of thr shelters for a family gathering. The only thing that would've been better is if the shelters had electricity. Overall a nice park and our kids enjoyed the playground for hours!
Nicole B — Google review
LOVE LOVE LOVE the playground area. The rubberized mat under the very sturdy and safe playsets is a bonus. Covered picnic tables and restrooms in close proximity to the play area are super convenient. I couldn't get my 3yo grandson to leave.
Xann R — Google review
A nice little park for your kids or if you are just wanting to take a walk. They got a ball field if you are into playing in a softball league in the spring/summer/fall. if you walk past the playground there is a little pond that you can sit at.

Park
Toby May Park, recently renovated with the support of Rotary International, offers a variety of amenities for visitors. The park features two playscapes, swings suitable for all ages and abilities, covered picnic areas, water and sand tables, a rock climbing wall, and free-standing toys to encourage imaginative play. Additionally, there is a spacious open field behind the playground for activities such as flying kites or playing sports like football or basketball. The park also includes courts for basketball and tennis.
Had a blast today playing outdoor racquetball with old friends, it was great. Based on the handful of times I've been there, the park is pretty well kept.
Dean M — Google review
Nice park to bring toddlers and young children . The playground is safe with lots of different activities. There are drums and other instruments to play with. There is a free library, basketball courts and tennis (or pickel ball). The park is very clean.
Donna C — Google review
Really fun park! There’s definitely something for every age of kids. There are swings for all ages and abilities, several play structures with slides, climbing, bridges, ladders, etc. as well as a “fitness” area with various structures for exercising, labeled for ages 5-12.
Sophia J — Google review
Not enough slides but the sensory autistic area was cool
Liam T — Google review
We loved the new play equipment, especially the musical instuments & the rollar slide! We also enjoyed trading our books for new ones at the Little Free Library.
Andrea B — Google review
It's a nice park. My main reasons for 3 stars is there are no bathrooms which is not very convenient when kids have to go. Also a slide that was broken and covered with plywood in the spring, still hadn't been fixed, and now the plywood is fraying which could cause splinters.
KPop Z — Google review
Toby May Park is one of the cleanest parks you will ever bring your kids to play. The playground is acceptable for all ages. Including teens and adults that enjoy basketball. They have restroom facilities that are also very well maintained.
Stephanie R — Google review
I would rate this a 3.5 stars, of course its an amazing park, I went there for a field day before. I had a bunch of gun and all that but the bathrooms were unsanitary and small, the lights in the bathrooms didnt work and there were spider webs in the bathroom. Its still very clean everywhere else, Practiclly no litter
