Instituto Ricardo Brennand is a cultural institution located in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. It was established in 2002 by Ricardo de Almeida Coimbra Brennand and is housed within the medieval-style Forte de Sao Joao Batista do Brum. The institute features a military and weaponry museum, an art gallery, extensive parkland with outdoor sculptures, gardens, and a well-stocked library.
Very beautiful museum. So much to see and do. Really enjoyed being there. Went with my family.
JP S — Google review
Have to admit, I was a little underwhelmed by certain parts of Recife, abandoned buildings and evident economic struggle; but not this place, apparently a lot of the money of the town went to whoever built this place. I was legit amazed by the collection of global art and artifacts that Mr. Brennand had accumulated. Huuge tapestries, ivory carved dioramas from asia, bottero sculptures, local art, and enough medieval suits of armor and weapons to hold off a small invading army; all housed in immaculately manicured gardens and enormous brick chapels and halls. If you have it, I appreciate the desire to let everyone else enjoy it also.
Kiantar B — Google review
Simply incredible. Looks like a very European art museum in the middle of North East Brazil, and even though most of the artworks are replicas, it's surely worth visiting. Many expositions are hosted and the permanent collection is very beautiful. Fair price, no wait and absolutely the best art experience in Recife.
ALESSANDRO C — Google review
This is one of my favorite places to visit in Recife. The Brennand collection of weapons is fantastic and they certainly have a vast collection of art. My favorite time to go is during the week when it rains a little because there aren't as many people around so you can have a lot of time to yourself. Great architecture as well. This place is worth your time for sure.
Nephi B — Google review
The architecture is stunning but the gallery displays a lot of replicas and some originals. Most pieces don't have information on who made them or where, nor any historical context. The arms collection os really interesting but could also use some more information. Also, the ticket priced at R$50 makes it more expensive than most Brazilians can afford.
Stella ( — Google review
One of the best and most unique museums in the northeast of Brazil, if not all Brazil. A must-visit if you’re in the northeast! The Dutch tapestries and the history of the Dutch in Brazil is fascinating, as is a vast building filled with thousands of weapons from the last hundred years. Add in the stunning gardens filled with capybara and monkeys strolling around and playing and this truly is a memorable place to spend a few hours. Cafe and restaurant on site too. Entrance is $50 BRL.
Jacob C — Google review
Absolutely worth a visit, the collection is amazing 👏
Elke K — Google review
A lovely and somewhat eclectic museum on beautiful grounds. I especially enjoyed the Brazilian section with tapestries and paintings from the Dutch occupation in the 17th century. Well-worth a few hours’ visit.

Nature & Parks
Boa Viagem Beach is a vibrant 7-mile stretch of sandy coastline in Recife, Brazil. The beach offers swimming areas protected by natural reefs, making it safe and enjoyable for visitors. A popular stop on tours combining Recife and Olinda, the beachfront at Boa Viagem is particularly lively on Sundays when locals flock to the shore. The area is known for its dense concentration of parasols and towering high-rise buildings that provide shade as the day progresses.
What a beauty 😍, awesome beach 🏖️ to spend a Quality Sunday. I was there for around 8 hours, you can have drinks, some food items and enjoy the sea views. Ample parking space outside. Wheelchair track is there to access the beach . Can get a taxi to and fro to the city. Of course, the crowd is making it more enjoyable 😃. And Thanks to nature for such a beautiful creation.
Manish K — Google review
Beautiful beach as it has calm and strong waves! Great for kids ! Also known as Piscinas! Lovely walk and reasonable prices to rent seats and umbrella. Average 10 or 15 reas.
Antoine A — Google review
Beautiful! Great beach, and location. Was urged not to swim, as there are sharks(story behind this) so really only went in water at low tide when the reef keeps a pool you can swim in
Todd B — Google review
Nice beach ⛱️🏖️ However, there is only water, sand, big buildings and some palm trees. Nothing special if you like really nice views. But if you like sun, sand and warm water, that's a good place to be.
Diego H — Google review
The high tale is around noon, so the best time to take advantage of the natural pools that are shark safe is the early morning. Once you are in pleamar, huge sections of the beach disappear under the water, but you will still have plenty of areas with a wide strip of sand. If you consume anything, you so not have to pay for the umbrellas and the chairs.
Jose S — Google review
Beautiful beach, however unsafe to swim due to the sharks. There are not a lot of warning signs.
F. N — Google review
I prefered over Porto de Galinhas for a nice long walk where you can have wide shore, uninterrupted by "tourism" and view of the sea and shore without kiosks.
Erna A — Google review
Boa Viagem is an urban beach located in Recife. Unfortunately known for accidents with Sharks, it is a very good beach to spend the day, on the beach out of the water. If you go, go early, as the sun sets early on the beach due to the large buildings that hide the sun from 3 pm onwards.

Very vibrant place, full of life in Sundays. People were in question waiting to inter the theatre but don't know what was the occasion. Around have place to play football, of course! Others just were hanging around! And have dog-garden where I saw a lot of them there. Some were enjoying bicycles also. The plam trees are amazing.

A delight in Boa Viagem. Lovely to see a park being really utilised and enjoyed within.
Grant M — Google review
This park was designed by Niemeyer, whom I am not a fan of. Just a few gigantic modernist structure and no green or nature at all. I guess you can enjoy special events, and a fair on weekends, but I visited it on a Tuesday. Before visiting, check their programming to make sure there is something interesting.

Boa Viagem Square is a bustling spot with palm-dotted lawns and a local market offering crafts and souvenirs, alongside a 1700s church. The area features modern malls like Shopping Center Recife and Shopping Center Guararapes, where buses heading downtown make stops. Visitors can explore the numerous shop stalls for gifts and enjoy Brazilian street food before heading to the beach for picturesque ocean views.
Great spot to savor local food and buy handcrafted souvenirs.

A pit that safety in Brazil is not great, this outdoor space is so lovely. One side they have beautiful local food and on the other, all the arts, local crafts. Everything very easy to pay with pix and I bought lots of gifts for family and friends
Haryanna A — Google review
This place is well lit and often has police to maintain security. There are often a number of decent food options in the evening and the market stays open pretty late with lots of artisanal crafts and art and much more to browse or purchase. There are often live music or local events here as well. If you are a tourist, just be aware that some of the locals (not all) on the street will pressure you for help or even try to sell you things at much higher prices than they are worth. The little blue church has lots of history and is often open to visit. The plaza has a good traffic light to be able to safely cross the street over to the beach.
Nephi B — Google review
The 3rd city with the most shark attacks. Be careful not to drink too much drinks!
Antoine A — Google review
Pretty ocean views! We walked to the beach every day from our hotel. We saw sea turtles swimming. There are a lot of people trying to sell you things and a lot of people experiencing homelessness in the area. We bought the best fruit from a little fruit stand about a block away.

Ash — Google review
Today I paid 72 bucks on 2 sacks of popcorn and 2L of soda and I feel mugged. The prices of snacks are ridiculous. 2L of coke cost 10 bucks, they sell 1L cups by 17. Horrible. Don't buy snacks at the theater.
Yuri N — Google review
It's my favorite cinema. Great sound and images, great sits. Although the cinema from shopping Recife has the amazing imax, this one is great in every room (and i don't really care about 3d, so...), and I prefer to wait for my movie at shopping Riomar... There is a pokestop near enough so you can get from inside the movies (but you could miss part of the movie), but no outlets (unfortunatelly).
Rhayanne C — Google review
Quite expensive and I had a terrible experience using a Voucher from Peixe Urbano - terrible in terms of organization, service, help etc. in the end the voucher expired, as nobody was able to tell me how to use it. Staff is not too friendly in general and entrance is very expensive (without a voucher)

The art craft section has many different things ranging from souvenirs, Brazilian clothes, small statues, bracelets and jewellery. Worth to visit both for the food and the art craft.

The tranquil atmosphere, surrounded by native vegetation and an extensive stretch of beach, invites leisurely seaside strolls and peaceful swims. Accessible by boat, known as "baitera," this beautiful island offers a natural landscape that is definitely worth experiencing.

Kleyton L — Google review
(Translated by Google) It was wonderful, very peaceful place. You have to cross in the boat or as the fishermen and shellfish gatherers know, baitera, it costs 10.00 to go there and back, the sun is very hot, so take your sunscreen, and use it a lot, check the high tide and low tide times beforehand, always go at low tide or when it's high, it's incredible, I practically spent the whole day there. You really have to take all the farofada, because there's nothing there. NOTE: One detail that left me surprised by the capacity of human beings 😮 was the amount of trash left by the regulars, how sad 🥲. So guys, take out your rubbish, whatever it is, just put it in a plastic bag and put it in the bin when you return. We end up destroying what we love so much. I left there with two bags of rubbish, the places where they set up camp are full of rubbish, because they throw parties, their farofa and they don't take the dirt away. 🥲
Fagner F — Google review
(Translated by Google) Good to go at low tide. Bring an umbrella and drink, as there are no vendors. The crossing is quick and easy, it costs just 5 reais round trip. Despite being beautiful, it is a lack of care on the part of the city council as it does not provide rubbish bins. It is important that visitors collect their rubbish. There's a lot of plastic lying around. A travessia é rápida e tranquila, custa apenas 5 reais ida e volta. (Translated by Google) Love Island Ilha do Amor is beautiful, it is comforting to know it, deserted and without commercial infrastructure, it is in a highly valued and millionaire region. Its beaches are worth it (from Paiva to Enseada dos Corais), the island is a kind of peninsula. From Pontal da Barra, you can cross by boat to this island, but a bridge was built connecting Barra de Jangada and the island, in addition to the highway that connects Praia do Paiva to Praia de Gaibu, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho. Manassu Forest Reserve At Engenho Manassu, this is one of five municipal ecological reserve areas, it covers 264.24 hectares and is rich in typical fauna and flora. Its protection area is integral, according to a state decree of 1987, which should be under the responsibility and protection of the Companhia Pernambucana de Recursos Hídricos (CPRH). Due to the land impasse between the Companhia Pernambucana de Recursos Hídricos and the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform, believe me, the decree has not yet been validated. The reserve region is crossed by the Manassu and Mussaíba rivers, with springs in the neighboring municipality, São Lourenço da Mata and which are tributaries of the Jaboatão river. They are relatively well preserved. The impasses between the two bodies mentioned hinder the inspection of this refuge, which loses its main species: visgueiros, sucupiras, imbiribas, pau-ferro, urucuba, mungubaque, which are being destroyed by the extraction of wood during the June festivals. (Original) Ilha do Amor A Ilha do Amor é linda, é reconfortante conhecê-la, deserta e sem infraestrutura comercial, fica numa região super valorizada e milionária.

Nestled in the heart of Jaboatao dos Guarapes, Pernambuco, the Reserva Ecológica Mata de Mussaiba is a stunning ecological haven that spans an impressive 272.2 hectares. Designated as an Ecological Reserve since 1987, it offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in nature's beauty. The trails here are steep and demand careful navigation, but they reward adventurers with breathtaking views of lush forests and majestic mountain peaks surrounding the Carrapato Reservoir.
(Translated by Google) On a sunny morning, I embarked on an unforgettable adventure in the Mata de Mussaíba Ecological Reserve, located in the municipality of Jaboatão de Guararapes. With its vast 272.2 hectares, this Wildlife Refuge, designated as an Ecological Reserve since 1987, has proven to be a true natural treasure. The trail started near Floriano station, providing an easy and inviting entrance to the heart of this ecological sanctuary. The exuberant vegetation, characteristic of the Atlantic Forest, surrounded us with its diversity, each step revealing new forms of life. I was captivated by the serenity of the environment, guided by the gentle murmur of the Mussaiba River, which is part of the watershed of this precious preservation area. In 2011, legislation adapted to the importance of preservation, recategorizing the reserve as a Wildlife Refuge. This change, regulated by Law No. 14,324, reflects the commitment to align with the guidelines of the State System of Conservation Units. During the trail, the feeling of being immersed in such a vital ecosystem became evident. The preservation of the hydrographic system proved to be a fundamental criterion, highlighting the responsibility to protect not only biological diversity, but also the integrity of water resources. Every step was enriched by sightings of rare birds, exotic flora and the constant melody of nature. By reaching strategic points, such as natural viewpoints, I was able to contemplate the grandeur of this reserve, a true sanctuary for biodiversity. My experience at the Mata de Mussaíba Ecological Reserve was more than just a trail; it was an immersion in the harmony between preservation and natural beauty. This refuge is a living testimony of the commitment to protecting our environmental heritage, providing visitors not just a tour, but a deep connection with the essence of the Atlantic Forest. Nestled in a historic area of Pernambuco, the Ruínas da Igreja do Rosário dos Homens Pretos de Muribeca is a captivating site that invites reflection on its rich past. Although the exact date of its construction remains uncertain, it likely dates back to the early 18th century, with references appearing as early as 1774.
(Translated by Google) In a historic corner of Pernambuco, stood the majestic Church of the Rosary of the Black Men in Muribeca dos Guararapes. At the height of the 16th century, this sugar mill town, with its 20 mills, witnessed the vibrant presence of African slave labor. Between different languages and particular beliefs, the brotherhoods of the Rosary of Black Men were born, resisting slavery. These brotherhoods, expressions of freedom and cultural resistance, built, even with limited resources, rich and ornate churches. The coronation of King Congo, part of the festivities of Our Lady of the Rosary, echoed African rituals, a precursor to Maracatu. The fearless spirit of these men and women reverberates in the ruins of the church, testimony to their devotion and fight for freedom. Today, a special invitation echoes through the centuries. Join the Trilha dos Engenhos de Jaboatão dos Guararapes, guided by our friend Henrique, to explore these fascinating stories. Experience adventures and environmental education as we follow the paths that connect the past to the present. Take part in the largest dog trail in Pernambuco and feel the unique energy of this place. Here the immortal Spirit of Guararapes reigns. (Translated by Google) The exact date of construction of the Church of the Rosário dos Homens Pretos de Muribeca is not known, but it probably dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. The first reference to its existence is from 1774, when it is mentioned in the Idéia da População da Capitania de Pernambuco, where the temple appears next to the Church of São Gonçalo and the Matriz do Rosário. In 1821, it was mentioned by James Henderson in his work “A History of Brazil” as being a hermitage with the same name as the Main Church. Its existence in 1863 is also mentioned by Manuel Honorato in his dictionary on the Province of Pernambuco. From the end of the 19th century, there are no references to the temple, nor is it known when or why it fell into decay and abandonment until it was left in ruins. The Ruínas do Engenho Suassuna, originally established as N.S. da Apresentação in 1584, is a site steeped in history and intrigue. Once a thriving sugar mill, it faced invasions by the Dutch and ultimately ceased operations in 1996 due to financial troubles. Today, visitors can explore its remnants, including a grand mansion from 1790 that has sadly fallen victim to vandalism and neglect.
