Archaeological site
Site Archéologique de Glanum is a significant archaeological site that was once the capital of the Glaniques, an ancient people of Provence. The town has a mix of Gaulish and Roman remains, including a fort and grand public monuments influenced by Roman culture. Excavations have revealed residential areas with courtyards, streets with sewers, mosaics, thermal baths, and a forum showcasing the town's sophistication.
It's probably the best Greek/ Roman ruins we've visited outside of Greece. It was pretty quiet in February, which was perfect. The paper guide is very good. We didn't get the audio guide, but they sold an expanded guide, which we picked up.

Incredible place to come spend a couple of hours learning about the 3 civilizations that lived in the area 2000 years ago. Small paid parking lot or you can take a long walk from town. Starts off near the parking lot before you go into the paid area with the arch that you can see starts the road into the old town. Get tickets at the reception center/gifts shop and opens up to an awesome area of ruins. Take the trail to the left first and it will loop back. We got the handheld speaker to help explain a bit more and it was definitely worth the 3€ for our small group. However, there’s a lot of good info posted around the ruins in French, English, and Spanish if you don’t want to pay for the speaker. Make sure to hit the viewpoint at the end of the route that comes back down to the trail back to the start. Good for the kids, especially the ones with an interest in Roman history. There is also a little cafe inside the area and picnic area out front.
Jesse S — Google review
Great site and much larger than expected. You can get a real understanding of Roman life from the ruins and printed leaflet (in English). Worth spending an hour or so on site visiting. You might be able to park outside the Saint Paul de Maisole hospital for free (as the car parking opposite is expensive).
Julia D — Google review
A good set of Roman ruins with a nice visitors' center. Not as spectacular as others you can find, but still very interesting. A nice add on to a visit to St. Remy.
Ethan C — Google review
Easy access and plenty of nearby parking, there is a short walk to the ticket office and gift shop. There is a restaurant ready to take your order and provide an amazing picnic. Don't forget to bring your blanket this place is very relaxing with exceptional breezes and plenty of sun.
Tommy M — Google review
We enjoyed visiting this ancient site and eating lunch in the cafe there.

Loved our visit to Glanum. Visitor center is well maintained & staffed with knowledgeable people. We got the audio guide which explains everything you’ll see with clarity. Fascinating place, well worth the stop for a couple of hours.

Carrières des Lumières is a former quarry located at the foot of the village of Les Baux-de-Provence in the heart of the Alpilles and the mysterious Val d'Enfer. Since its opening in 2012, it has been offering digital art exhibitions that combine immersion and contemporaneity.
We visited Carrieres des Lumieres on a day trip to Les Baux de Provence this week. It was very windy and quite hot so it was great to go into the cave and enjoy the art. Currently they have Monet and Rousseau exhibitions featured. It was very enjoyable to find a spot and enjoy the visuals. We stayed a little over an hour and that was good for us. I definitely recommend if you’re in the area. There is parking across the street and a bit further down that is convenient for the art and a short walk to town. Overall it was a great experience for us.
Justin R — Google review
A magical immersive art experience inside a former quarry! The projections are stunning, the music perfectly matches the visuals, and the atmosphere is breathtaking. Easy parking, smooth organization, and enjoyable for all ages. Absolutely a must-visit in Provence!
詹謦有 — Google review
We've seen the Van Gogh exhibition in St Petersburg and Klimpt in Phoenix. This exhibit outdors Klimpt by light years and is better than Van Gogh. Seating is limited but the space is gigantic in comparison. totally amazing!
Mike L — Google review
One of the most unique experiences we had! Combination of space, art and technology is sublime, you can't help it but stand in awe for stories unfolded all around you. We visited Monet / Rousseau show and it was amazing 😁 Parking is a bit tricky, there are many places to park but there are also many visitors so you might lose some time finding parking spot. Also, explore area, there are amazing spots!
Stjepan N — Google review
Amazing experience with the light display and the music. Why not 5 stars? Two reason traffic and finding a place to park is very hard. Recommend coming early or late evening. 2nd, I feel the show could have done with a bit of commentary to set the scene to help engagement for the children.
Alexandre L — Google review
A must go to if you’re around this way, inside this quarry such an amazing feat, we had a couple of art displays from Monet and Rousseau in about an hour show, nearly as interesting as the lumieres show in Bordeaux at the submarine bunker I love the way they do this here in France the locations are fantastic
Henry H — Google review
It is not as nice as people can think. But it is well executed, unique and absolutely worth a visit. Plus you are next to the "baux de Provence" so you can combine the visit. It is nice with children even of young age as they are free to move.
Max L — Google review
Absolutely amazing. The wall were alive with famous paintings that were constantly changing. With the use of visual effects and backed up by sound throughout, I was totally submerged into the whole experience.

Monastery Saint-Paul de Mausole, located on the outskirts of Saint Remy in Provence, is renowned for its association with the iconic artist Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh admitted himself to this psychiatric asylum in 1889 and spent a year there. It was within the cloistered walls of this monastery that he experienced his most prolific period, creating over 150 drawings and around 150 paintings, including his famous work 'Irises.'
Had a brilliant visit! It was very inspiring and being where Van Gogh created some of his wonderful painting was quite powerful for me. It was just nice to be able to sit in the garden and enjoy the surroundings. It was busy but not overcrowded, visited on a Wednesday in the afternoon.
Isabelle S — Google review
Very interesting to see where he created some of his best and most memorable work. Impressive to walk through the house, spaces and gardens that inspired him to paint his work. The house is nicely set, giving you a good idea of the spaced he resided in. 9 euros for entry, free for kids under 12. One feedback is that they brochure/info can be improved, they just give you a printed paper as information.
Elana P — Google review
Fascinating insights into Van Goghs mental decline. I found the museum very moving and peaceful. It’s an interesting site showcasing the support given to mental patients in the nineteenth century. Allow an hour for your visit and you can walk up to the Glanum Roman site after if you wish.
Julia D — Google review
This was a very interesting experience. You get to see the main rooms of the former asylum, the doctors offices, the sisters / nuns, some common areas and Vincent Van Gogh's bedroom. They're is also the cam we're people were locked up when deemed "problematic", the bath room (equally as daunting) and also the cloister and gardens. Now, the parking was very limited but there is a paid lot nearby. There are only stairs to the upper floors so not accessible by wheelchair.
Judith S — Google review
Phenomenal place, with lots of interesting information and facts about Van Gogh and his work. Highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of his work and who wants to see the places that inspired Van Gogh the most in his best paintings. It was incredible to look into the studio where he painted and to walk around the grounds and gardens that inspired his most famous paintings.
Damian G — Google review
MUST for van Gogh fans! A working rehabilitation house with paintings from actual patients are as impressive the copies of Van Gogh's strumming about the space. Beautiful, peaceful, and somewhat haunting.
Michael W — Google review
We decided to head to Van Gogh’s asylum late in the day and arrived shortly before it closed at 1800/6:00pm. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I can tell you honestly, what we say was a lot better. I had no idea how many of his seminal works came from his time in St. Remy! Walking around and seeing the vantage points from where he painted the masterworks you’ve seen forever was pretty special. On the other hand, some of the things they did to those people in the asylum were pretty barbaric. We followed the paper guide that was provided and it told a great story. We took 45-60 minutes to wander around and see what we could see. We took loads of pictures and used our imagination. Something we learned on at the end of the tour was the asylum still hosts people in need of help. Obviously in a modern facility across the property, but they use the same art therapy that they used during Van Gogh’s stay. I recommend a visit, but remember, it’s not flashy, it’s just a special place that will move you.
Heath S — Google review
Excellent expedition gives a real insight into the man himself, he's background character and unquestionable talent. Brings the whole story to life seeing where some of his famous paintings were based on. Highly recommend.

The Musée Estrine - Présence Van Gogh is a contemporary art museum located in an 18th-century mansion, offering an interpretation center dedicated to Van Gogh. While it doesn't house any original Van Gogh paintings, it features audio-visual displays about the artist and a permanent collection of modern art. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, making it a delightful stop for art enthusiasts.
Amazing small museum which explores the life of Van Gogh. Sadly no original Van Goghs on display, but the other exhibitions were amazing too.

One of the most welcoming museum/gallery experiences we've ever had. The delightful lady at the desk was charming, full of information and not a little mischief! She made sure we had everything to ensure we got the most out of our visit and was very knowledgeable about the works and displays. We didn't even have to apologise for being English!
Chip H — Google review
It is a small and charming art museum, with basically no collection of Van Gogh’s work. We visited on July 6. When we asked questions in English, the ticketing lady responded with a long string of French, then told us in a rather unfriendly manner, “That’s how it feels when I hear English,” which took us by surprise. We understand the pride French people have in their language. However, for foreign visitors, speaking only English is not necessarily a choice, often the only option. This was the only negative encounter we had during our two-week stay in France. We sincerely hope this lady will come to better respect international visitors.
IT Y — Google review
Really enjoyed this little art museum. Yes, they have a Van Gogh presentation, but no Van Gogh's. That was made perfectly clear by the woman that sold us our ticket at the entrance (she did a great job). But the exhibitions they had were great. Well done and I think better than the Van Gogh documentary. Skip the Van Gogh presentation (you can get most of that on line) and go straight to the art. Small enough to cover in an hour as you explore St Remy.
Jim W — Google review
Such an interesting museum. When in Saint Remy absolutely worth a stop in. There are no actual Van Gogh’s but a very interesting exhibit that explains his life and especially his time in that region in France.
Nicole T — Google review
Not really worth the entry fee. There isn't enough quality art on display to justify the fee. The Van Gogh thing is like a school project, it's a joke. Even with the audio guide device none of it is interesting enough nor is it anything you can't get from a Wikipedia page (not an exhibition, none of his actual work is on display). There seems to be a French attitude with "museums" and galleries prevalent in France where travelers are only there to be taken advantage of. They'd charge unreasonable sums of money while they feel nothing much needs to be provided in return. It isn't money or time I cannot get back. You could spend your time and money elsewhere in better ways so stay away.
Michael P — Google review
Another excellent local museum in St. Rémy-de-Provence. When we visited at the beginning of October, the museum closed for two hours at noon for lunch. We arrived after lunch and had the place virtually to ourselves - it was a delight! Very informative museum host, Chantal, took our ticket money and explained the museum, carefully explaining that there are no original works of van Gogh’s on exhibit here, but rather the exhibition about him is cultural and ethnographic and describes his life and experiences in St. Rémy. Great description of van Gogh’s life and particularly how his periods of painting changed based on his life events and time at the mental institution in St. Rémy. Lovely movie with images of surrounding countryside Van Gogh painted and reproductions of how he painted them. Audio guide available for free in English for VG exhibit. Another exhibit was on when we visited - of Juliette Roche, a contemporary painter from the early 1900s. Madame Chantal explained about Roche’s work for us a bit, which made the visit so enjoyable. Permanent paintings also include some Roche works, as well as some of her husband’s (who’s name I forget at this moment), and a few other contemporary artists who worked locally. Great museum for small St. Rémy - very worth our visit!

Nestled in the heart of the stunning Provence region, Château des Baux-de-Provence stands proudly on a rocky outcrop, offering a glimpse into medieval history and commanding panoramic views of the famous village of Les Baux. This strategically located fortress has been occupied since ancient times, serving as an observation point and protective stronghold for surrounding territories, preserving a rich history that is meticulously maintained to this day.
STUNNING! The views are amazing and there are many wonderful shops, cafés and restaurants. You can also explore old churches and caves. Great way to get exercise and fresh air. Parking was not an issue. Can easily spend half a day here.
Ann-Marie — Google review
We loved our visit! Such a charming and beautiful village. The soap shop is a must, as well as the church. Would definitely recommend a few hours for a visit. We did it as an excursion on a cruise and had a great time.
Jackie D — Google review
We visited around the middle of June and it wasn't overly busy just very active so that was good because there are a lot of tight little walkways which may get cramped in the Summer. There are many quaint little shops that you can visit and purchase stuff from, I purchased some fridge magnets and cicada merchandise which was very popular in this area. We loved our visit here and it has such a beautiful charm and the soap shop where I got my magnet from, in the middle is a must see! So interesting as well as the sardine shop at the top, we spent around 2 hours here and managed to fit everything in.
Maya — Google review
Great visit! Well worth the discounted 9€ per person tickets for visitors over 60. Amazing views over the local area and a really interesting site history. It’ll take about 1-2 hours to walk around the site (although some high bits are a bit scary and not for those scared of heights!)
Julia D — Google review
This is an old medieval castle with a small town around it (like a smaller version of Carcassonne). There are tourist shops selling the typical wares and some restaurants (which we did not eat at). Parking around there in a Sunday was very difficult and it was not possible to find a handicapped space. The whole area is cobblestone, so terrible for anyone using a walker or wheelchair. There's a nice view at the top.
Judith S — Google review
Quite the stunning location! Worth the detour to see the village and the castle. However be warned parking during the summer is very hard and get ready for a steep walk and many steps! During the summer can get very hot so bring water
Alexandre L — Google review
A bit touristy, but worth the visit for sure. Great hilltop medieval village and fortress with a remarkable history. Simple but lovely church to visit. The castle and fortress ruins at the top are a great place to survey the whole countryside. There is a video presentation within the castle that gives a comprehensive and interesting history of town — worth the admission price. Advise early arrival to ensure parking if it is the high season.
Sam F — Google review
Fantastic!! Could be "dangerous" for some that want to venture to the top of the castle/fortress. WEAR GOOD SHOES (i.e tennis shoes/trainers or hiking boots! Extremely steep.and uneven surfaces. Absolutely worth the vist!!!! The views are STUNNING!!!!! Also, GO EARLY! to avoid the crowds!!

Wonderful little museum that you should not miss if you visit Glanum excavation site. Small but very informative historic presentation. The site also evokes a sense of the continuity through the centuries.

A small museum dedicated to the excavations in Glanum. Interesting but small and you would struggle to spend an hour there.
Mark H — Google review
If you didn't speak French, you won't get much from this. There are leaflets experiencing the exhibits but very few of those are available in English.
Jim C — Google review
We bought the tickets for both Glanum and the Hôtel de Sade museum (billets jumeaux) but we weren’t all that impressed with the museum itself. It’s really more about the excavations of the site of Glanum, with fewer artefacts than might be expected. The museum is in St Rémy de Provence, a bit of a walk on a very hot day.
Lisa D — Google review
The museum does not have much to offer and can easily be skipped. It does not at all stand up against the ruins on the outskirts of the city. The museum struggles to even fill anything of importance in it's four small rooms.
Stig L — Google review
Darn place doesn't open until until June 17 despite it's relationship to Glanum and it's status as a " Centre Des Monuments Nationaux". How disappointing! It's an archeological museum, folks, so don't get turned on or off because of it's name.

The Van Gogh Wanderweg - Start is a delightful walking route that offers a unique insight into the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh. As you stroll along the picturesque road, you'll encounter 19 panels showcasing photos of Van Gogh's paintings from his time in Saint-Remy. The walk leads to the Saint-Paul de Mausole Monastery, where Van Gogh resided and created some of his most beautiful works.
Pretty little town, with cobblestone streets and bohemian markets at every corner. During his stay here, van Gogh painted some of his most beautiful works, which is a constant reminder that Provence is breathtaking 💚

Excellent walk. Builds up the atmosphere before a visit to the monastery. The messages from an to Van Gogh are really engaging

This Van Gogh Wanderweg is a work of art in itself! Walking down the street you are encountering stations that highlight a particular work by Vincent Van Gogh. The information provided includes background and context to the works of Van Gogh. Many of the stations feature landscapes that are seen in the paintings. Each of the plaques is a large ceramic tile with the painting and text done in the glaze.

Nestled in the stunning Alpilles mountain range, Les Antiques de Glanum is a remarkable historical site that showcases two impressive stone monuments dating back to 200 B.C. These structures, the Mausoleum of the Julii and the triumphal arch of Glanum, were unearthed during an archaeological dig led by Pierre de Brun in 1921. This excavation revealed significant portions of what was once a thriving Roman city.
A short walk from the old part of town. Two absolutely stunning examples of Roman monuments. It is hard to believe how well presented they are. They are free to visit, too. A great addition to your visit to Glanum.
Chris K — Google review
I stopped off here quickly whilst doing the Van Gogh walk, I didn't have time to look at the main ruins (which I regret). I just had time to take in the two structures near the carpark. Very interesting, I loved the Bad Relief panels and the close access you could get to these Roman ruins
Southwell C — Google review
Les Antiques are historical monuments marking the entrance to Glanum. The Jules Mausoleum dates back to 30-20 BC. The Triumphal Arch dates from 20 AD but most of its upper part has disappeared. It was restored in the 18th century. It is adorned with reliefs illustrating Caesar's conquest of the Gauls.
Ilona — Google review
Beautiful structures from an age long past.
Matthew — Google review
It was formerly the entrance to the city of Glanum. The Jules Mausoleum was erected by the Julii (one of the major Roman families), in honour of their father and grandfather. It is particularly well preserved. It has a rectangular base with four sculpted fasciae, it is surmounted by a triumphal arch, on top of which ukulele have a small round temple with columns and a pyramidal roof; this temple houses the effigies of the two people to whom this exceptional monument is dedicated. The Triumphal Arch was restored in the 18th century, when its roof was replaced with slate stone. It is adorned with reliefs illustrating Caesar's conquest of the Gauls. However, the fruit and foliage, symbols of abundance, suggest the benefits of pax romana.

A little hard to read the signs as they have been weathered down and have become a little hard to decipher, however this is a magnificent site which I highly recommend to anybody who likes history even a little. It's along the Via Domitia which is the oldest road in France and it is impeccably preserved.

Nestled in a former Renaissance mansion, the Alpilles Museum, also known as Musee des Alpilles, offers a glimpse into the medieval atmosphere of its surroundings. The museum is housed in the Mistral de Mondragon mansion, which boasts a remarkable interior courtyard and galleries showcasing archaeology, ethnology, graphics, and photography. Visitors can explore an intriguing collection that reflects Provencal culture and learn about ancient trades and activities that have vanished over time.
Excellent small local museum with first rate exhibits of the Alipilles region. Impressively laid out to make the most of the space, easy to move through and learn about the area. Located in a former mansion and right on one of the town’s loveliest squares and street (rue Carnot), this was a treasured find for our family who loves museums of all kinds. Recommend using Google Translate on your phone if you do not speak much French as exhibits are (obviously) in French. First rate experience!

Visited twice. Fascinating about the history of teasels and how there was a whole industry in the region in the C18 and C19 as they were used for carding wool. Some are still used. Plus other interesting exhibits on the flora of the region and local landscape. Mostly in French, with some English translations if you want them.

The museum offers an immersion in the history, culture and traditions of the Alpilles region, which encompasses a mountainous area rich in natural and cultural heritage. Its collections include exhibitions of archaeology, ethnography and popular art, which allow you to explore the daily life of the inhabitants of Provence over the centuries. There are also displays on agriculture, crafts, rural life and traditional products such as olive oil and wine. Additionally, the museum houses works of art including paintings, prints and photographs that portray the beauty of the region. (Translated by Google) Very interesting museum if you want to know the history of this region. Typography, agriculture, typical period clothing, paintings and much more. There is also a small exhibition on cicadas, I didn't understand if it is temporary or not. The visit lasts about an hour, the cost of 5 euros is correct and they gave us a pass to pay less for other attractions. The only thing I would do is put the descriptions of the objects/works in English too. The friendly museum guide explained everything to us, but if you want to look alone and don't know French it's a bit complicated.

(Translated by Google) The Alpilles Museum is located in a beautiful mansion organized around an interior courtyard which is worth a look. It presents quite varied collections (paintings, furniture, everyday objects, etc.) on the popular traditions of Provence. The visit takes a good hour if you want to cover all the sections in detail. It allows you to learn more about the history of St Rémy after strolling through the typical streets of the historic center. During the same stay, we visited the Museon Arlaten in Arles and, in my opinion, the visit to the two museums is complementary for those who want to know more about the roots and traditions of the region.

Swimming lake
Peirou Lake, nestled just outside Saint Remy de Provence, is a charming artificial lake that beckons visitors with its picturesque surroundings and outdoor activities. This serene spot is perfect for picnicking or angling while being enveloped by rocky hills adorned with hiking trails. You can reach the lake via an easy, shaded walk along Avenue Antoine de la Salle or embark on a more challenging hike along the red and white path from Avenue Vincent van Gogh.
Wonderful place above St Remy en Provence nice hike to get there don’t miss to visit the Alpilles

A small lake, pretty but no swimming allowed. No circumnavigation is possible. Steep path to reach there. Rangers advise checking the fire risk state before setting off to any park, as in summer the fire risk can leave areas forbidden.
Mark H — Google review
Small lake with accessible parking. You can come here for a picnic with the kids. Views are very nice and there are some short hikes to the village and back. Swimming is not recommended.

Traugott V — Google review
2 main ways to get there.... An easy, mostly shaded, walk along asphalt via Avenue Antoine de la Salle. OR A more arduous but rewarding hike on the red and white path that joins the lake to the main Avenue Vincent van Gogh up the road, ,south of the Glanum paid car park. You'll need a decent pair of hiking shoes and be reasonably fit. A few nice surprises en route. Or walk it like a loop as we did.

Park
Nestled in the heart of Provence, Alpilles Natural Regional Park is a mountainous nature reserve offering a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and horse riding along marked trails. The park's stunning landscape features soft grey rocks juxtaposed against lush greenery, creating a picturesque setting for leisurely walks and exploration. Visitors can also explore the historic town of Saint-Rémy within the park, which boasts ancient Roman ruins and medieval architecture.
What a beautiful place. There are many ancient hill villages and quiet little hamlets tucked away in this hidden treasure of Provence. A must visit! Returned here again in September and October 2019 and as always, enjoyed this beautiful area of France. Enjoyed the experience at Carrieres de Lumieres and highly recommend this place. Parking here is a challenge and an underground parking garage is sorely needed! Visited Mas Ste Berthe winery and the setting is spectacular in the shadows of Les Baux and the wines and olives are reasonable and of high quality. Worth a visit!

Great hiking. Every day more stunning than the last. This is a free hill range with no charges etc. All paths in the national park seem to close to everyone incl. hikers from 01.06 to 30.09 so check before you go there.

A beautiful place to walk round tranquil and quiet
Graham R — Google review
Not impressive if someone is looking for action but very beautiful in its colour and the incredible fauna & flora. The soft grey rocks look like pressed up from und this green carpet. Agriculture, leisure (golf) and park combine harmonic. The only downside is, the information and maps from the tourist office do not match the information and tours described on the information at the parking. And the name or location of the parking is not to find in google.
Thomas K — Google review
This is an incredibly beautiful area with lots of opportunities for nice walks and bicycling. The little mountains in the area are a joy to behold, and make for great views. The area is mostly very quiet, so no large queues of tourists all over the place, with the exception of only a few villages like Saint-Remy-de-Provence, although even there it is quite comfortable to walk still. You're also quite close to the sea if you want to gaze at some different views or hills ;) and beautiful towns like Uzes and the Pont du Gard can be quite close if you go to the right spot.
Frits J — Google review

Grotte de Peirou is a charming natural attraction located near Saint Remy de Provence, offering a picturesque lake and a captivating cave. The surrounding natural beauty makes it an ideal spot for various activities such as swimming, kayaking, or simply unwinding by the lakeshore. The cave features an arranged descent that is particularly appealing to children, adding an element of adventure to the visit. While some may find the lake less compelling, it still provides a pleasant setting for relaxation.
Fun little excursion. The grotto isn’t difficult, but a bit spooky. Nice lake to chill by.
Jesse R — Google review
It's a cool cave with chains and metal ladders. I passed through while on the GR 6. It's well marked but seemed like a randomly difficult passage for a long distance hike. It wasn't strenuous but it was iffy to navigate. I think there should be additional chains for some of the descent since the rocks are flat and can be slippery.
