Nestled on a hill overlooking the picturesque city of Avignon, Fort Saint-André is a remarkable 14th-century fortress that invites visitors to step back in time. This architectural marvel showcases medieval military design with its formidable towers, portcullises, and drawbridge. As you wander through its well-preserved grounds, you'll be captivated by the stunning gardens and walking paths that offer breathtaking views of both the mountains and the city below.
Built in the early 14th century by order of King John II the Good of France, this military fortress was strategically constructed to guard the border between the French Kingdom and the Papal territory of Avignon. Enclosed within its massive stone walls are the remains of the Abbaye Saint-André, a medieval garden, residential quarters, and watchtowers. It’s a hidden gem that blends military history, peaceful nature, and panoramic views. From the northern watchtower, visitors can see the Pont d’Avignon, the Rocher des Doms, the skyline of Avignon, and the silhouetted peaks of the Alps to the east. Note: The abbey ruins can be accessed with a separate admission. ※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.

One the best castles, great grounds and displays and the cries over Avignon, well worth a visit

It always feels nice to visit a forteresse and feel the vibes of the times. There was a nice view one sid Avignon otherside Villeneuve d,Avignon
Gamze D — Google review
The abbey is beautiful and it's a peaceful walk around the grounds. Incredible to see ruins from 1000 years ago. The fort side is incredible as well, exhibits and walking along the wall is an experience that is hard to beat. Incredibly peaceful place, kind workers, only complaint is it's a bit expensive. 8.50 per person
Cole J — Google review
The fort and the abbey are separate tickets, which is lame, and the abbey is closed on certain days, so we didn't get to visit both which was a little disappointing. The fort does offer nice views at least, and there are many historical things to see. To get here is a lot of uphill walking, and many of the stairwells in the fort are very steep and narrow, so be careful with your footing.
Connor G — Google review
It was a really, beautiful place! However there was no guidance of where to go the workers were too busy talking, its up a very steep hill, no sign posts for toilets all a bit of a Mish mash 😕 Don't think I'd recommend to be honest 😕 and judging from the response it says it all.... Many thanks
Joanne S — Google review
Another stunning of a Fort. You can walk around it for a small fee. They do a deal if you visit the Abbaye as well and the view from up there is just out of this world. Take your time when visiting the Fort, its history and views are mind blowing.
Alexandra E — Google review
You can park the car down at the village and then walk up to the fort . It’s quite a steep walk but totally doable. The entrance in the yard of the fort is free but inside the building is not free. The view is worth the walk to the fort Saint Andre. I recommend.

Tour Philippe-le-Bel is a historic fortress constructed in the 13th century by King Philip IV of France at the entrance of the Avignon Bridge. It served as a strategic stronghold in medieval southern France. Today, it stands as the only remaining vestige of the fortress and features beautiful vaulted halls hosting art exhibitions. The bridge it once guarded has been dismantled and rebuilt over time, with only four arches, a gatehouse, and a chapel remaining from its original structure.
Visited at 2pm on a Thursday in mid October. Entry 4.50 euro. About 2 people there! You'll need to walk up the 124 step narrow stone spiral staircase with views out the narrow slit windows as you go. There are 3 levels - first level up there is a large room with several audiovisual booths - you can sit on a stone seat to listen in French or English. It was quite peaceful and cool there, hearing about history and construction. And one could look out the windows too. Level 2 was another large room with what looked like some stone walls with original painted designs. I didn't spend long here. Up further to the roof, one passes through an old hinged wooden door (keep it closed to stop pigeons coming in!). The top has parapets and another round tower which is inaccessible. The views are 360° - beautiful! Of the rooftops of Villeneuve-les-Avignon, the Rhône river, Palais des Papes and Pont d'Avignon. Being mid-afternoon the light was gorgeous - reflecting off the dark grey clouds and silvery Rhône of the west. You can observe life happening below on and off the river. I think the ambience of the place was heightened by being there totally alone - and thinking of what had taken place in this area over the centuries. Well worth the climb and entry fee!!
Margie — Google review
The view from the tower top is gorgeous! Best view of Avignon! It’s slightly tucked away from the city center and not touristy, so you can enjoy the view all to yourself! The price is very reasonable, for just 4 euros per person.

A definite must see for history buffs. I think this important monument is often overlooked because it’s not centrally located (within close proximity to the main sites). If you’re driving (or cycling) it wouldn’t take you long at all to get there. I walked from my hotel; it took me around 35 mins at a leisurely pace, with stopping time to take pictures along the way. Interesting place to visit, and the view from the top of the tower is worth the visit alone.
Caroline F — Google review
The tower, built around 1302 by King Philippe IV of France (Philippe le Bel), served as a strategic watchtower to monitor both the Pont Saint-Bénézet and the nearby Papal territory of Avignon. The original bridge once connected directly to this tower before partially collapsing in later centuries. Architecturally, the structure blends Gothic style with military pragmatism, reflecting its dual role as a symbol of royal authority and a defensive outpost. Today, it houses a small exhibition space inside, and from the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Rhône River, Avignon, and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. ※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.
Seokjin H — Google review
Only €4.50 entrance fee to a tower built in 1302 - 1350. Video displays on first floor and stunning views of Avignon and the River Rhone.
Alice G — Google review
Great Tour, beautifully restored! You can buy an entry ticket for 5/6 historical venues, all within a few km of the Tour and value for 12 months, but you are time restricted you can easily enjoy them in 2/3 days
Judith S — Google review
The king of France Philippe le Bel ordered in 1292 the construction of a fortress around the city and the abbey of Saint-André. The tower was attached to the Pont Saint-Bénézet (aka Pont d'Avignon) which was then abandoned in 1669 and the fortress ceased to have a useful function. After the French Revolution the building was abandoned and fell into ruins. In 1822, the city of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon decided to demolish the entire fortress, except for the current tower.
Natalie D — Google review
You can see the beautiful full view of Avignon from the top of this tower, and know all the history and construction about the bridge.

Museums
Nestled within a stunning 17th-century mansion that was once the residence of Cardinal Annibal de Ceccano, the Musée Pierre-de-Luxembourg is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. This museum showcases remarkable pieces such as Enguerrand Quarton's masterpiece "Le Couronnement de la Vierge" from 1453 and the renowned Ivory Virgin from the 14th century.
Fine arts religious collection from the 14th century housed in the former cardinal's residence. Paintings are by Nicolas Mignard and others. There is an Ivory Virgin carved from an elephant tusk in the early 14th century. There is also a magnificent cabinet from the charterhouse of Villeneuve les Avignon carved in the early 17th century. Recommend a short visit. The museum is on several floors.
Mike Z — Google review
Delightful, compact museum with several large, impressive works of religious art. Their corronation of the virgin was intricate and colorful, rewarding close examination. Even the couple pieces of furniture were impressive. This museum is definitely worth visiting when on the opposite bank from Avignon. It relates well to seeing the monestary up there street.

She didn't even look up and made a hand gesture to let me know that it would be her male colleague who would take care of it. And while she was at reception, the lady continued to take care of her personal business on her cell phone! I admit that this is the first time I've seen such a deplorable welcome in a museum! We should think about doing some training in reception or simply changing jobs! A warning to the managers of this museum if they read the visitors' comments.... The Palais des Papes, once a rival to the Vatican, is an imposing structure consisting of two different parts: the severe Palais Vieux and the more decorative Palais Nouveau. The interiors are austere due to the loss of original furnishings during history, but visitors can still imagine its medieval splendor with colorful frescoes and grand halls. The palace hosts cultural events in its beautiful courtyard, showcasing performances in various languages.
Incredible integration of technology with the “iPad” tour. This is one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen and the art installation was so interesting! Honestly could have spent a whole day here but capped it at 3 hours… good idea to eat first because you can stay here for hours. GREAT for families and kids. So much to see
Jeff S — Google review
An interesting, if slightly disappointing, point of interest. The structure is amazing. A palace and fortress, it commands your attention. However, the interior is sterile. No furniture, tapestries, or frescoes. Only a couple chambers with faded wall coloration. Without the current art exhibition it would be largely colorless. The tour is also relatively short. There must be large sections not accessible to the public. The garden is neat and well cared for, but small. With all this in mind, it is still worth visiting for its historical significance and the architecture. Note: the iPad guidance is quite good. Take time to read the information boards placed throughout the tour. Get tickets in advance online for a timed entry.
Michael L — Google review
Everything is massive in this fortress and palace at the same time that was built in two stages. The Old Palace (1335–1342) built by Pope Benedict XII and the New Palace (1342–1352) Pope Clement VI, the Magnificent. It's one of the largest medieval gothic buildings in Europe. Seven successive French popes resided here between 1309 and 1377, fleeing the political turmoil and insecurity in Rome, When you enter you get a Histopad which is a handy tablet which you can use to navigate through the building. A nice feature is the historic overlay that you activate by scanning a logos in the different rooms. The overlay then shows the situation as it would be in 1352, the year of completion of the palace and the Papal Conclave and Election of Innocent VI after Pope Clement VI died. The rather dull interiors are brightend a bit by modern art. The garden is small and really not worth the extra money you hsve to pay to visit it. It took me two hours to see all the rooms and climb up to the ramparts to get a view of the surrounding area. Oh, and the taste in the 14th century is different from today. Roasted peacock anyone? And a glass of Chateau-Neuf-du-Pape ?
Seimen B — Google review
A disrespectful use of this unique historic monument, reduced to a playground for some contemporary artist. The two stars go for the historic significance of this monument and the indeed impressive structure. Unfortunately, it seemed to us that the team assigned with managing this monument was decided to cut any ties to what they must have considered to be embarrassing art from the era when the Palais was at its finest: they basically degraded the Palais des Papes to an exhibition center of contemporary artist Jean-Michel Othoniel. Fact is that none of the visitors went to “Palace of the Popes” to see some modern art exhibition. Instead of investing the money to maintain the rooms and gardens, they managed to destroy the experience. You can’t possibly feel the vibe of the place while constantly being distracted, intruded and violated by some pieces of art, which are basically in the wrong place. The tour is a bit chaotic but we got it sorted out by asking the helpful personnel. The tablets - initially I thought a good idea - turned out to be a semi-functioning annoyance (have to carry it around, too heavy to sit on the neck). I would rather enjoy the monument by “breathing it in”, look at it in awe, not keep scrolling on a tablet. Most signs with explanations were in French. If someone does not appreciate the Christian history, the religious art of that time or might even be embarrassed by all of those uncool people of that period, they probably shouldn’t be involved with managing this site. Let them run a modern art gallery: I would gladly visit it. But just as when I go to the MOMA I don’t expect it to be full of medieval religious art, when I go to the Palace of the Popes I probably don’t expect it to be full of modern art. This here is unworthy: Show some respect to the history and significance of this place and the people who created it. This is not just another playground. Please!
George P — Google review
Fascinating collection of buildings in Avignon detailing the time of the 'Avignon Popes' in France. I found the Histopad guide wasn't particularly helpful, but the rest of the displays were great. Interesting artwork integrated throughout. The gardens were especially nice.
Stuart H — Google review
Very interesting. So much better than the crazy tourist traffic and the hundreds of tour groups you have to wade through to see the Sistine Chapel. Low fees, no lines, very little crowding, and amazing history. Definitely a not to miss site. We visited the palace, gardens and bridge.
Doreen V — Google review
Particularly impressive. The exhibition was interesting alongside the impressive building. You get a tablet with explanations in adapted language and there are explanations. The signage inside the buildings was a bit problematic and sometimes the tablet got stuck and didn't work well, but overall it was lovely.

Magnificent structure. Steeped in history. There is information in every room. You also get a tablet to read about whatever room your in. Would recommend everyone to visit. The garden are quite small but interesting.

Jardin des Doms is a picturesque public garden located on a hill in Avignon, offering stunning views of the Rhone River and the countryside. The park features a pond, a cafe, tall trees, fountains, and sculptures, making it an ideal place for leisurely strolls while enjoying the panoramic scenery. Visitors can access the garden for free during its opening hours from 7:30 AM to 8 PM.
Rocher des Doms — beautiful, but absolutely freezing in jan Even just looking at this photo brings back the chill of that day 🥶 I always imagined Provence as mild and sun-kissed, but Avignon in January? Brutal. From the viewpoint of Rocher des Doms, I got a view of the Rhône River gently cradling the city — and the iconic broken span of Pont Saint-Bénézet stretching across it. It was stunning… but way too cold to even think about walking over to that bridge.
Yesran — Google review
A bit difficult to find the entry point. You have to exit the walled part of the city on the north side and find the stairs leading up to the garden and lookout. Currently not wheelchair accessible. Hardly anyone there. It would be a peaceful spot to have a picnic or read a book overlooking the Rhône. Currently some parts are fenced off, and the area looks a bit rundown. There is a great semicircular tiled map indicating important landmarks visible on the horizon and in the environs. However some of the trees have grown so tall you can't see the landmarks!

Jardin des Doms is a true gem in Avignon, offering a serene and picturesque escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Perched on a hill, this beautiful garden provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Rhône River, the iconic Pont d’Avignon, and the surrounding landscapes. The garden itself is meticulously maintained, with well-tended lawns, colorful flowerbeds, and charming shaded pathways. It’s the perfect place to take a leisurely stroll, relax on a bench, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The layout is both elegant and inviting, making it a wonderful spot for a quiet moment of reflection or a leisurely picnic. One of the standout features of Jardin des Doms is the stunning views it offers. From the garden, you can capture some of the best photo opportunities in Avignon, with the city’s historic landmarks beautifully framed against the backdrop of lush greenery. The garden is also home to several statues and fountains, adding to its charm and providing interesting focal points throughout your visit. It’s clear that a lot of care and effort goes into preserving the garden’s beauty and ensuring that visitors have a memorable experience.

These are lovely gardens just beyond the Cathedral and almost to easy to miss altogether. There are some stunning views of the bridge and river as well as an interesting exhibition of enlarged black and white photographs dotted around the gardens. There is a delightful cafe in the middle of the grounds alongside a water feature making it a great place to have a sit down whilst having a competitively priced coffee.

The Bridge of Avignon, also known as Pont Saint-Benezet, is a famous medieval bridge with four arches spanning the Rhone River and featuring a small chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas. Located in the culturally rich city of Avignon in the Provence region, this historic site is just one of five UNESCO world heritage sites in the area.
I spent around 20 minutes at the Pont d’Avignon**, and it was absolutely worth it. The bridge, though only partially standing today, carries so much history and charm. Walking along the remaining arches with the Rhône River flowing below and the old city walls in the background feels like stepping into a living postcard. Even in a short visit, you get a real sense of Avignon’s medieval past — the connection between the bridge and the nearby Palais des Papes is fascinating. The site is peaceful, with lovely views over the water and the surrounding countryside. For just 5 EUR, it’s a quick but meaningful stop — perfect for anyone exploring Avignon and wanting a glimpse of its history and beauty in under half an hour. To be honest I cannot say I liked it! Lots of people, they check your bags. The same way to go to the gardens but when we bought tickets no one told us the gardens are closed for 2 years already. They have toilet in the corner. Views much better from the castle. Maybe 🤔 from another side of the river view much better.

You're telling me I have to pay to walk on a bridge that doesn't even go the full way across the river it is built on? Do you know how many bridges I have crossed--for free--that DO fully cross their respective river? EVERY OTHER BRIDGE I HAVE EVER CROSSED. It does offer a nice view of the city, at least.

Definitely worth a visit! The entrance is only €5, and although the audio guide can be a bit confusing at times, the visit is still very worthwhile. The video about the reconstruction is especially interesting and clearly explained. In short: a small price for a rich and unique experience!

The Bridge in the Nowhere — because, well, it’s not exactly taking you anywhere anymore! But that’s part of the charm of the Pont Saint-Bénézet, a historic bridge in Avignon that stands proudly as a symbol of the city, even though it no longer spans the Rhône River entirely. Fun Facts: • The bridge originally had 22 arches, but now only four remain. The missing arches were destroyed over time due to floods and natural wear. • Saint Bénézet, after whom the bridge is named, was a shepherd who, according to legend, was told by God to build the bridge. He supposedly carried a large stone across the river by himself to prove his divine mission. • The bridge is also famously featured in the popular French song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon,” which has made it internationally recognizable. This beautiful structure is a marvelous sight, offering a peaceful stroll across the remaining arches. The view of the Rhône River and the surrounding city is stunning, and the serene walk gives you a sense of stepping back in time. You can almost imagine how it must have felt centuries ago when the bridge was a vital crossing point connecting the north and south of the river. As for the history, the Pont Saint-Bénézet dates back to the 12th century and was a critical part of medieval trade routes. Over time, however, it fell victim to both natural disasters and warfare, leaving only a few of its arches still standing. Despite the passage of time, the bridge remains a powerful reminder of the city’s medieval significance and the ingenuity of its builders. Admission is €5 for adults, and it’s free for those under 18. For visitors over 64, there is a discounted rate — €4.

Good day outing activity. One bridge and chapel in the middle with historic importance to avignion. You need to buy the ticket the price doesn't justify it . However beautiful on a sunny day out . If you have a plan to go to palace de Pope which you should do ....they will seel combo tickets where you will find tickets couple of euros cheaper . Give yourself 3 hours for descent exploration for both attractions. Do not each musesls and french fries from any of the shops nearby . It's all pre cooked and served cold . We wasted money in 2 different occasions. Do good research and enjoy lunch . Book in advance as place is very popular.

The Musée du Petit Palais, located in Avignon, is a museum and art gallery housed in a 14th-century building that was once the residence of bishops. It features an impressive collection of early Renaissance paintings from Italy as well as works from the Avignon school. The museum's holdings include Italian primitive paintings, stone carvings, and sculptures from the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
It's free museum but it's world class museum with many old masters paintings. I especially like the methods of how they made paints in the past. Too bad my French is not very good cos very few descriptions are in English and it's mostly just who's the painter and title.

Stunning free museum of religious art, mainly paintings, from 600-700 years ago. The quality of the pieces is amazing. Very beautiful.

This is a museum of Catholic art near to the Palais de Papes. It is well set up. I'm giving it three stars because there is only French descriptions. There is no entry fee. I highly recommend it if you're interested in Italian catholic saints and mystery history.

They have some wonderful art, but they also had the lights off in some of their galleries, had other galleries closed off, and herded is out a half hour before they even close. Make sure you go early, and pay attention to their seasonally changing hours.

Opened in 1976, this FREE (yes apparently it’s free) wonderful museum that is located in the main square (at the side of the Palais des Papes) has fantastic collection of Renaissance paintings of Avignon. It’s a very easy and relaxing place so do take your time and just enjoy.

Located in the heart of the old town, this is the city’s main covered market and a hub for local gastronomy. Originally established as an outdoor marketplace in the 19th century, it was transformed in the 1970s into a modern indoor facility. Today, it houses around 40 specialized food stalls, bars, and small eateries offering a rich variety of Mediterranean ingredients, Provençal delicacies, wines, and prepared dishes. The market is also known for its iconic green plant wall on the exterior and serves as both a daily food destination and a gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

Avignon Cathedral, also known as Cathedrale Notre-Dame des Doms d'Avignon, is a 12th-century Romanesque-style building located next to the Papal Palace. The cathedral is adorned with a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary and is a UNESCO Heritage Site. Its elevated position on a rocky ledge allows it to be visible from various points in the city and beyond.
Huge church!!! So beautiful, filled with little details. If you want to donate some money, is very easy. Just need to tap the card and choose the amount. When we went, there was someone playing the organ, so beautiful
Maria B — Google review
This is Avignon’s principal Romanesque cathedral, originally constructed around 1150. When the Papacy relocated to Avignon in the 14th century, the cathedral became the site of major papal liturgical ceremonies and masses. Its proximity to the Palais des Papes elevated its religious and symbolic status significantly. The building has undergone several restorations, especially in the late 19th century, which preserved its original Romanesque structure while incorporating Gothic and Baroque elements. One of its most striking features is the gilded statue of the Virgin Mary atop the western façade, visible from many parts of the city. Inside, the cathedral houses the marble tomb of Pope John XXII, making it not only a religious but also a historical monument closely tied to Avignon’s unique role in Church history.

Notre-Dame des Doms is a must-visit destination in Avignon, especially if you’re looking for an unforgettable sunset experience. Perched atop a hill, this historic cathedral not only offers a deep dive into the region's rich religious history but also provides some of the most spectacular views in the area. As the sun begins to set, the view from Notre-Dame des Doms becomes truly magical. The sweeping panorama of the Rhône River, the Pont d'Avignon, and the distant hills is bathed in a warm, golden light that creates a breathtaking backdrop. The changing colors of the sky and the landscape as the sun dips below the horizon make for an unforgettable experience, perfect for capturing stunning photographs or simply soaking in the beauty. The cathedral itself is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, with its intricate details and serene interior adding to the overall experience. The peaceful ambiance within the church provides a lovely contrast to the vibrant colors of the sunset outside. Whether you're an avid photographer or simply looking to enjoy a tranquil moment, Notre-Dame des Doms during sunset is a truly magical experience. It’s a highlight of any visit to Avignon and a beautiful way to end a day of exploring. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a blend of history, beauty, and unforgettable views!

Roman Catholic cathedral located beside the Palais des Papes in Avignon, France. Originally built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, it was later expanded and restored in the 15th and 17th centuries. The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whose gilded statue crowns the bell tower, overlooking the Rhône River and the city. Inside, it features beautiful frescoes, marble altars, and papal tombs, reflecting its historical connection to the Avignon Papacy. I'm greatful to attend the mass here.

During a day trip from Avignon to Villeneuve-les-Avignon, I discovered the impressive tourist attraction known as La Chartreuse de Villeneuve. Although I didn't require accommodation since it was just a day visit, I noticed several hotels that seemed appealing in this area compared to staying in the center of Avignon. As part of my exploration, I visited La Chartreuse and found it highly recommended. The comprehensive documentation provided at the reception offered detailed and engaging information about the site.
Carthusian monastery dating to the Middle Ages. In 1352 Pope Innocent VI donated land and his cardinals mansion to the Carthusian order. The monastery is well preserved and definitely worth a visit.

This is a beautiful little gem. We visited during the month of April when the wisteria and redbud trees were in bloom. The crowds were few so we were able to fully enjoy the beautiful gardens. We ate lunch in the outdoor cafe overlooking Avignon. The food was delicious and the price was affordable. I highly recommend this place.

I'm so glad I came here - I was completely enraptured by this peaceful, beautiful space. There's a lot to see and read about. They provide guide books which you can use to explore at your own pace. There are also many places to sit and relax and a cafe at the end too. I did not eat here but it looked lovely. I was impressed by the contemporary exhibition here too. I highly recommend making time to visit. I walked over from Avignon and it's a bit warm but very enjoyable.

Well worth visiting, the documentation we received from the reception was very detailed and interesting to read. The tour around was very well signed. However if you read all the information in the document from reception and all the information signs as you go round, you could spend a lot longer.

We had the most amazing experience. To start with, the staff was excellent. We were welcomed in a open and warm way. They were very nice and paid attention to the details. Next to that, the food was absolutely mindblowing! We took the menu with accompanied wines. From start to finish we were amazed by the quality of food, different tastes and how well the suggested wines paired with it. I would highly recommend to anyone to visit this lovely restaurant. Disappointing. The food is prepared excellent, so bravo to the kitchen. But to the rest, so many elements just make for a poor experience. Very, very slow and infrequent service. Allowing guests to talk obnoxiously loud on phone at table and play video on phone with loud audio in a fairly romantic courtyard. So NOT a fine dining experience. Uncouth, non etiquette diners should be reminded by staff where they are. Had to go to counter and join a line of 4 to pay the bill. Very Hot time of year and they need fans and misters. Not sure why the lady continued to talk in fast French after 3rd time of knowing I have about 3 sentences in my French skills. Pricing in general very good. If they could just get their service right.

Nestled along the picturesque banks of Avignon, Le Bercail offers a delightful dining experience that combines the charm of French cuisine with stunning views. Guests can savor delectable dishes and pizzas on a lovely terrace while gazing at the serene river and remnants of a historic 12th-century bridge. The ambiance is enhanced by the shade of trees, providing a refreshing escape from the warm sun.
I unexpectedly as a solo on my first day in Avignon found Le Bercail. I took the free ferry over after my early morning train ride, mostly needing toilette and hungry but found the most enchanting place people and food! My server Cassandra couldn't have been more kind helpful accommodating and fun. There was no rush made for me even though they were hustling with reservations as well. Made me so happy. Found like I found a family restaurant. Sitting outside as the sun came out for perfect 70 degree weather! Rested and ready for next 12 hours of my day!

Le Bercail was fantastic! They helped get a reservation set up for a large group (30 people) and worked with us on the per person budget. The meal was delicious, the desert was very good and the staff were so kind and thoughtful. Our group had an excellent time and really loved the experience with Le Bercail!

La Cour d'Honneur - Restaurant Avignon Centre Ville is a charming restaurant located near the heart of Avignon. The outdoor terrace, shaded by wisteria, provides a lovely ambiance for dining. Despite its popularity and quick filling up, the service is extremely fast and efficient. The menu offers artfully styled dishes such as foie gras, pepper steak, scallop risotto, beef fillet, and tiramisu with speculoos.
Avignon seems to come alive only after 7 pm. At 7:30, we went to three restaurants in a row and all were full. Desperately searching for food, we settled on this spacious, elegant, and expensively looking place because they didn’t require a reservation and there were plenty of tables available. Our initial uncertainty about the place was immediately washed away by a free appetizer made of tomato and goat cheese, light, extremely fresh, setting up the mood for a finely crafted three course meal: the entree was a butter-squash soup, mild, slight sweet, out of this world; the plate was a naturally flavoured fish that must be eaten with the secret tasty sauce; the desert was a cheese cake with peanuts that epitomizes how a cheese cake should be, not what you eat at the cheese cake factory in America! Talking about America, our meal was slightly ruined by an American next table: he talked loudly and nonstop, monopolizing the conversation while his female companions could not get a word in. When the bill arrived, it’s only 40 for each including service. With this kind of food, service, and price, we have no complaints. This is a place that should be full every Friday. You should go because we will go again.

Beautiful courtyard setting in a quaint part of Avignon near the Mvsevm. We had high expectations, but the service, and food fell short. Our first waiter was distracted, impatient, terse and rude. First our complete drink order, five guests, didn't arrive together, then the same thing happened with our starter course. Getting his attention to remind him to bring the complete order was almost impossible (and the restaurant wasn't really busy). I expect a long evening for dinner in France, but this was unacceptably long. The time between courses was just to long, Another waiter took over our table, and he was much nicer, but not much quicker. Other tables around us seemed to have better timed service. My salad was excellent, my scallops main was well presented, but, though perfectly cooked, the scallops had little/no flavor on a bed of tasty, but lukewarm Ramen. Good flavor, but hard to tell if they were supposed to be hot or cold. My caramel cheesecake dessert was good. Overall a disappointing evening considering the price. Not sure I'll return.

I chose this restaurant because it served steak au poirve, something I had been eager to eat. The courtyard at the front is lively and there is a real buzz which I wanted. On dining however I realised the service and food were terrible. The steak was sirloin but was so fatty and tough that I couldn’t eat it. At no time this anyone check in with me mainly because they seemed understaffed as I sat for 15 minutes with an empty glass and completed meal (I ate the gratin, salad and bread) in front of me. Even when they cleared the plate and saw the largely uneaten steak, no comment/question. Do not recommend.
Stephanie J — Google review
We had a pleasant dinner and dessert here and can recommend the place. Good wine pairing. Very decent prices, looks fancy but is affordable. Super large outside area + inside area that is semi-outside, creating a cozy atmosphere. The place is rather quiet, with mostly older adults, as I've noticed - no kids all evening.

My husband and I had lunch here today. The courtyard setting is beautiful. I ordered the beef carpaccio which came with French fries and salad. My husband ordered the steak. It came with a choice of either scalloped potatoes or French fries. Plus it came with a salad. We also ordered un pichet de vin rouge. My portion was very generous in size and it was delicious. My husband’s salad and fries were delicious. Unfortunately, his steak was inconsistently cooked and it was very tough. The wine was very enjoyable. I finished with a coffee. Our server was very professional and he had a great sense of humour. Merci La Cour D’Honneur for a very enjoyable experience.

A very nice restaurant in the old town of Avignon with a well designed yard with shadow. The dishes are beautifully presented and same compliment to the taste. The personnel is very attentive and welcoming. A nice address to go back again!

The hotel recommended this restaurant for dinner. The service was very good. The food was very good as well. Nice out door dining area. I would go there again. I really don't care for cheesecake, but my wife and daughter ordered a slice. It was one of the best cheesecakes I have ever had. The scallops were superb, and the mozzarella and tomato salad was a great start.

Rue des Teinturiers is a charming, narrow cobblestone street that winds alongside the picturesque Canal de Vaucluse. This historic thoroughfare was once bustling with textile production, particularly silk manufacturing from the 14th to the 19th century, powered by an impressive array of water wheels—though only four remain today. Locals affectionately refer to it as 'the street of wheels.'
This little road is a must see! The cobbled stone street runs beside the small canel with its huge paddle wheels! And quaint cafes to stop along the way! Very interesting!

We visited because everyone said this was the nightlife spot of Avignon — full of restaurants, bars, and a great atmosphere. Honestly, I’m not sure if we went to the right place, because it was nothing like what we expected. There were maybe four bars or restaurants open, none of them particularly inviting. The street itself is pretty, but mainly because all of Avignon inside the walls is beautiful. The vibe felt somewhere between hipster and slightly rundown, with a mix of locals and a few sketchy spots. It wasn’t terrible, but definitely not the lively, charming place we were told to expect.

Nestled in the heart of Avignon, La Cuisine du Dimanche is a delightful gem that offers an intimate dining experience. Chef Marie Ohanessian crafts her menu with a focus on seasonal ingredients sourced daily from the local covered market, Les Halles. Diners can indulge in dishes like homemade gnocchi paired with rich tomato fondue or savor slow-cooked Aveyron lamb accompanied by roast potatoes and oyster mushrooms.
Loved this place! We had the gourmet menu (trout with picked veggies, truffle rissotto, duck and merengue) it was all absolutely fabulous - it was the best meal we had during our trip - the waiter was very polite and helpful and we loved the detail of the chef coming out- highly recommended
Ana C — Google review
Cosy place! Staff reallly kind and attentive. Food was really and not overpriced. We ordered the menu and dishes were tasty. The only thing they can improve is that maybe in some dishes there are too many ingredients and flavours on it, making the main ingredient too blur. Recommendation is to make it a little bit simplier.

Had dinner here. Best meal we had in France! Presentation was a work of art. Beef filet best ever had. Catch of the day also delicious. People continually turned away who didn't have a reservation as it was fully booked.

Metischio — Google review
Small and interesting restaurant, currently only using indoor tables and not the outdoor space. Only 20-24 seats so you must book in advance. We saw many people turned away. Innovative menu where you can choose your meal or have the chef choose for you and also accommodate your preferences and any allergies. We found it challenging but enjoyable. Lovely atmosphere and excellent food quality. The sole waitress was lovely but stretched to keep up with the diners. Don't be in a rush to eat and go.
Belinda W — Google review
Nestled in a recessed nook on one of the main shopping streets (rue de la Bonneterie) in Avignon, La Cuisine du Dimanche offered a wonderful dining experience. The site was originally a passageway through the old streets of Avignon but not converted into a single space, where you eat amongst the original off white limestones under a covered archway. The menu is non-existent with the diner given a 3 or 4 course option based on what the chef had prepared for that evening, just indicate if you have any allergies (to which they provide an extremely length list) and your preferences, or more so, what you do not like. From there the plates are brought to the table. This is gourmet dining, with complex combinations of locally sourced ingredients that were excellent in both taste and presentation; and it was prepared with relative haste so there were not long pauses between servings. While it was quiet on the night we went, I suspect this restaurant can get busy during the main season (we visited in early December) so reservations would be recommended (you have to call). Well worth a visit if you are in Avignon.
Craig B — Google review
We had the best meal and experience at this restaurant! It’s in a great location, a cozy street with no cars and about 2 other restaurants with outdoor seating. The food was amazing—my favorite was the risotto!! My husband and I had to hold ourselves back from licking the bowl, it was that delicious! After our meal the chef/owner came out to ask how we enjoyed the meal—owners and wait staff were extremely friendly and helpful with our lack of French and understanding the menu. While we would have gladly paid more for this food, the menu was very reasonably priced. Don’t miss this spot on your visit, it’s unassuming/cozy/quaint and so worth it!

(Translated by Google) On a map from 1618, it appears as the second largest square in Avignon, after that of the Palais des Papes. It was then known as “Place du Limas” or “Place de la Porte de l’Oulle”. From the 14th century, limas - from the Latin limaceus (muddy) - designated in this district the land reclaimed from the Rhône. It then became “Place de l’Oulle” then “Place de la Comédie”. In 1843 it took the name “Place Crillon” in homage to Louis Des Balbes de Berton de Crillon, one of the greatest captains of the 16th century who died in Avignon in 1615. Nestled just 300 meters from the Porte de la Republique, the Collection Lambert Avignon is a contemporary art museum that invites visitors to explore an impressive array of modern artworks. This is a major contemporary art museum in Avignon, founded in 2000 through a generous donation by renowned French collector Yvon Lambert. Initially established with his personal collection, it is now jointly operated by France’s Ministry of Culture and local authorities. The museum is housed within two adjoining 18th-century aristocratic mansions — the Hôtel de Caumont and Hôtel de Montfaucon — offering an elegant architectural contrast to the contemporary works it displays. The collection is notable for both its scale and quality, featuring works by some of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Exhibitions are organized on a rotating basis and often take the form of curated thematic or solo shows. ※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.

This contemporary art museum in a former palace balances the challenging pieces amidst dramatic architecture. Personally I enjoyed seeing one of my favorites, Sol LeWitt. The museum is just down the block from one of Avignon's most entertaining streets with restaurants and shops only a few steps away. I recommend L'Épicerie de Ginette for open sandwiches, soups & homemade cakes in a 1940s cafe with period music and terrace seating on a small square.

Arlequin Restaurant is a hidden gem just a block away from the touristy Clock Square in Avignon. The restaurant offers a great little patio and friendly staff, creating a quiet and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors rave about the amazing food, with dishes like salmon, steak with potatoes, and decadent chocolate molten dessert receiving high praise. The location near Palais des Papes adds to its appeal while being tucked away from tourist traffic.
I went there for our dinner with my wife and 2 of her friends. We ordered 3 appetizers; lobster rolls, frog legs and octopus. All the dishes were fantastic. Amazing and fresh. For mains we ordered lamb shank, Gnocchi with truffle and flank steak. The steak was cooked to perfection. Gnocchi was creamy and tasty. The lamb was fantastic too. The waiter was also very friendly and speaks very good English. Highly recommended!!

I think it's one of the best restaurants where you get so much quality meat for that price, but I'm too peasant to understand the taste of the side dishes
Alexandru S — Google review
We experienced all 3 restaurants along the same street, but this one is far behind of the other two. We arrived around 8:15 in the evening without the reservation, but the waiter very kind offer the table. From that point just all the way went down hill... We sit there almost 20 minutes has no one served or ask. Then finally a lady pass the menu, without explain or ask what kind drink we like... It took another 10 minutes to have the waiter back to take order for drink. In between, we saw someone sent dish back, which I thought maybe the customer a bit fussy... Also keep seeing the waiter and waitress make big fuss with another table of guest looks like their friends or someone they know, but forgot the rest of the restaurant guests still waiting to be served... Then we finally got order and when our dish on our table it is already an hour later after we arrived. The lady who sit next to plus also just few minutes before us, she also seems very disappointing with her order; she also sent one of her order back. I thought it may just an unfortunate day for the chef, but until I dig in my food and realised this is not just a accident. My partner ordered meat of the day which is serloin, but the meat was not tenderize before cooking which cause very difficult to chew, the sauce was watery and blend. I ordered lobster brioche and a mash potato on side. The lobster filling was again watery even drippwhile I was eating, not much lobster in as well... The flavour also flat, I can do much better job than this at home. The cabbage on the side was hard like chewing, even not easy to use the fork to pick it up because they were too hard.... The potato mash was like running mud, no flavour again, no salt just awful to eat. We have been so many different type of restaurants, this definitely on the bottom one as the money that to pay and the quality and service we got just not worth anything. I am not sure what those positive reviews from, but definitely not in our case.

We had our final dinner in Avignon here last night. A lovely and lively place without being too noisy. A wonderful menu and service. We shared escargot (fabulous), I had sweetbreads with chanterelles (amazing) and my friend had a beautiful plate of steak. Highly recommend this place a little off the main tourist square bit still very central and convenient.

We have been travelling for 2 weeks in the south of France including Nice, Cannes and St Remy and this was one of the best restaurants!!! The lobster brioche, the octopus salad, the eggplant entree and the gnocchi with summer truffle and spinach was out of this world!!!! Our waiter, whose name we missed (a young Italian man) was the best we have ever had. His friendly demeanour, amazing service, knowledge about the food and complimentary wines was great. Thank you!!! Do not miss this restaurant. Make sure you ring as google said it was closed and we nearly went elsewhere!!! Sensational food!!!

€6 entry to see a stunning house with quite possibly the most beautiful bed you’ve ever seen. Ground floor has some fantastic art work, furniture, vases, tapestries etc. when you go upstairs there are 3 rooms in a shade of green that’s mind blowing. Walk through to the bedrooms and then you enter the Chinese room. OMG. Look at that bed! The room is a vivid red that just oozes money. Walk to the jardin and you would think if they charged an extra € they could afford a gardener.

Interesting 20th century mansion with a lot of interior decorative art objects including Chinese porcelain and furniture. The young lady at the museum told me that he passed away at age 90. The name "mourgues" comes from the Occitan word "monk". The site was a former religious property. The Église Collégiale Notre-Dame, constructed in 1330 by Cardinal Arnaud de Via, stands as the chapel of a former monastery and is an essential historical site. Following the Revolution, it became the parish seat of Villeneuve. The church's main facade boasts a sculpted portal and two bell towers, while its transept features stunning stained glass windows and intricate sculptures. Inside, visitors can admire its magnificent interior.
The collegiate church of Notre-Dame began building in 1333 is an absolutely magnificent gothic church. It was composed of 12 canons administered by a dean. Much restoration is still needed but the entire is amazing as it exists. The church and alter are impressive and well preserved. Highly recommend a visit.

Located in the heart of the old town, this lively square takes its name from the Tour de l’Horloge (clock tower) that stands at its northern edge. It was built atop the site of the ancient Roman forum, and since the 15th century, has housed the city’s clock tower and former town hall, making it a longstanding political and cultural hub. There were exhibitions inside the palace, and outside, local folk art groups participated, creating a lively atmosphere. In the evening, crowds gathered, and there were outdoor cafes and street performers. La Chartreuse-Centre national des écritures du spectacle is a historic Carthusian monastery that dates back to the Middle Ages. It features a cultural center and a cafe, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and culture lovers alike. The monastery, founded in 1358, boasts Gothic architecture and houses one of the oldest oil mills in Provence. Visitors can tour its kitchens, horse and cattle stables, and learn about the legacy of producing Mediterranean oil.
A beautifully preserved and restored monastery with interesting tidbits of information and facts from a guidebook and the attractions themselves along the way. I visited in low season and had the entire monastery to myself. The lady at the reception is as kind as she is beautiful. I only wish my French is better so we could have a longer conversation.
Desmond W — Google review
Founded in 1356 by Pope Innocent VI, this former Charterhouse monastery became one of the most important Carthusian complexes in France. Since 1973, it has been transformed into France’s National Center for Dramatic Writing, serving as a creative and research space for playwrights, directors, choreographers, and other performing artists. Visitors can explore the preserved monastic architecture—including the monks’ cells and corridors, chapel, and gardens—independently of its artistic function. ※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.

Just fabulous. Much better than the palace in Avignon, less crowded, excellent interactive displays. Very interesting film about the bridge and the work to make a sort of virtual experience of how it would have been.

Very fun, feels like you’ve been transported back in time and if you’re lucky there could be an exhibition on inside which there was during my visit (very nice to see some contemporary art in a medieval setting). There’s a lovely courtyard for after your visit with a restaurant and bar/cafe.

Abbey St. Andrew, located within Fort St-Andre, is a 10th-century abbey with resplendent vaulted halls that can be visited through guided tours. The terrace gardens, ranked among France's top 100 gardens, offer stunning views of Avignon and the Rhone and are adorned with fragrant roses, iris-studded olive groves, and wisteria-covered pergolas. The ruins of three ancient churches add to the charm of the garden.
This abbey is a unique place. From the gardens there are stunning views over Avignon. From the café on the vaults there is a view worthy of a painting of the Popes' Palace. You can stay for hours in this garden to relax and enjoy. it is a haven of peace. don’t hesitate to stay there for a long time to enjoy all the treasures of the place

The walk up is a bit tough when it’s hot out but it was really the best view once you got up there. Cute little cafe where you can have a snack and cold drink. Very nice place to spend an hour or two.

The walk from and to the centre of Avignon was delightful, and we bought apricots and cherries in the Thursday town market before walking up the hill to the fort and abbey. The abbey garden is really beautiful with a rich and long Cristian heritage. The cafe/restaurant has stunning views and excellent coffee. I was slightly disappointed by the attempt at a wild garden near the lilly ponds. I absolutely love wild meadows, but this was perhaps the wrong place - perhaps something more formal with a lavender or rose theme would be more appropriate. This is a small comment to what is otherwise truly magnificent. Thanks for a wonderful day!
Andrew D — Google review
We spent most of a lovely spring day here in the garden. The views are incredible and the garden is indescribably beautiful.

Absolutely mind-blowing gardens during our walkthrough in late May. The design and planning behind the plantings is incredible. The cafe on the grounds is pretty good too, with food, drinks, beer, and amazing views.
Chris S — Google review
This former Benedictine abbey, dating back to the 6th century, is a serene and artistic site that combines historic ruins with beautifully restored Italian-style gardens. Originally a Christian pilgrimage site in the early Middle Ages, it grew into an important Benedictine center by the 10th century. The abbey's religious function ceased after the French Revolution in the 17th century. Today, the site offers sweeping views of Avignon, the Rhône River, the Alps, and Mont Ventoux, making it both a place of historical reflection and scenic beauty. Note: The fortress ruins can be accessed with a separate admission. ※ Included in the Avignon City Pass.

41Galerie Bos'Art

Art gallery
I never thought I would ever buy a piece of art. Against all odds, I did buy a drawing the first time I stepped in an art gallery. Bos'Art is where it all happened swiftly and smoothly. Strolling down the streets in shorts under the scorching Provence heat, I didn't look like your average art buyer. In spite of my casual attire, Audrey, the gallery manager, welcomed me warmly with a big smile on her face. I asked the usual noobie's questions, which she patiently answered one at a time. She also shared some recommendations and words of wisdom. I took the time to look at this portrait drawn by Hom Nguyên. I couldn't take my eyes off it. The following morning I rang Audrey as to know if the portrait was still available. Yes, she replied. We arrived at lunch time. Audrey forwent her lunch. More importantly, she made me feel 100% confident that this drawing was calling my name. After the deal was done, we drank a bit of bubbly beverage and talked about Audrey's plan to expand her collection. At Bos'Art, you will find quality pictural and sculptural art. You don't need to have deep pockets to get started. Try it out!
