Italian restaurant
Wine bar
La Trattoria in Helmsley is an Italian restaurant located on Market Place, offering a taste of authentic Italian cuisine. This bistro, cafe, and cocktail bar rolled into one provides the ideal setting to savor the best of Italy in the heart of town. The restaurant is known for its finest ingredients, traditional recipes, and freshly prepared dishes crafted by a passionate team. Visitors can expect amazing service, fresh food with plenty of choices at reasonable prices, and a great atmosphere.
🤌🤌🤌Excellent restaurant. I thought it might be a bit silly going for Italian food in the middle of a day out in the countryside. But damn, this place was amazing and the food was some of the best I've ever had. 100% recommended giving this place a whirl. Very friendly staff and very well priced.

Had a lovely meal here last night. we chose the early bird menu. 3 courses for 18.00. the food was fresh and the staff were very friendly

Open for breakfast. The sunshine special was really nice, fresh local ingredients. Coffee was good too. Two young ladies on service were excellent, friendly & attentive without being over bearing. Definitely recommend.

I had originally planned on booking a table at Cooper's, but realised after looking online it was closed on Mondays. So instead, I decided to book a table at La Trattoria (would definitely recommend booking, either online or by telephone!) Was a tad early but that wasn't a problem, one of the young ladies showed me to my table. I was given time to look over the menu, deciding to go for the slow cooked beef shin Ragu with pappardelle... My word!!! The pappardelle was cooked wonderfully, nice and tender. Speaking of tender, the beef was cooked BEAUTIFULLY!! I didn't have to cut it, as it simply fell apart and was super tasty. The lady who served me was really pleasant and asked how everything was part way through, which I thought was a nice touch. I more than likely would have had a starter and a dessert, along with the main, had I not had cake earlier on, as the restaurant had some good things on the menu... Maybe next time! I'd be more than happy to return again, to La Trattoria on a future visit to Helmsley.

We stopped off out of the blue without booking. They were full but said we could eat at the bar. I will forever be grateful for that suggestion as the food was perfection. The staff are so very friendly- did I mention that the food was perfection? If I lived in the area I would be eating here constantly-don’t go by without visiting here - your lives will not be worth living if you missed the opportunity.

Went in for food and wasn't disappointed two course early bird for £16 I had pasta with meatballs and chilli which was very good followed by tiramasu again very nice, my wife chose pasta with tomatoes and bacon followed by creme Brule. Service was excellent and resteraunt very nicely decorated thank you for a lovely meal.

Very enjoyable evening meal for my birthday! Couldn't fault the food or service and very good value for money. The only slight let down for me was the tables were a little small and a bit cramped for four people. Also they allow dogs, which in my opinion is totally unnecessary in a restaurant of this size.
Helen S — Google review
La Trattoria is a brilliant Italian restaurant with lovely décor and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It’s dog friendly and really does suit any occasion- whether it’s a date night, family celebration, catch-up with friends, or even a work lunch. The pasta is delicious and excellent value, the specials board always offers something new and exciting, and the pizzas really hit the spot. A perfect restaurant for both locals and visitors to the area!

Mannion & Co is a renowned restaurant located in Helmsley, known for its unique dining experience and picturesque backdrop of Helmsley Castle. The restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring dishes like French Onion Soup, Full English Breakfast, Harissa Roasted Cauliflower, and delectable sandwiches such as Back Bacon, Brie & Chutney and Feta, Houmous and Olives.
What an incredible little gem! My boyfriend and I popped by for some brunch over the weekend and we were blown away by the food, we expected it to be nice but the standards were so high. We ordered the prawn sandwich and the buttermilk chicken sandwich with a side of fries to share and they were all so tasty and seasoned so well. The bread was specially selected to go with each dish and complimented the food really well. I also got an iced hot chocolate which was so refreshing on a hot day. The staff were so friendly and lovely, we live over an hours drive away but we already have decided we will be returning! There isn’t parking but there’s plenty of on street nearby and a car park a short walk away too :) beautiful little spot just opposite a stream and in a stunning picturesque location.

Really lovely cafe situated in the heart of Helmsley. We sat outside for lunch surrounded by historic buildings and with view of the ancient castle. We were welcomed with friendly service and promptly served the most delicious, fresh and home cooked food. Too stuffed for pudding but the cakes looked excellent. Will return!
Will H — Google review
A lovely little cafe right in the middle of Helmsley. Lovely outside sitting area by the stream and seating available inside. A little tight on space but the food and service was great. If disabled I would ask the staff if there are disabled toilets as the ones used were up a steep set of steps.
Angela W — Google review
The food is gorgeous. The coffee is amazing. The service is brilliant. I love the restaurant/cafe. I also love their restaurant in York. It’s a little bit pricey but I guess it’s everywhere now after Covid.

We had just walked around the castle and were ready for lunch. Manions was the perfect fit. A very welcoming spot with exceptional service and food. We had a delicious spiced Indian lentil soup that was out of this world. When you are in Helmsley, pop in here!

Astonishingly good restaurant-quality food in this tiny little café. We sat outside with enormous gourmet burgers and a totally delicious pork belly ciabatta with the best crackling I’ve ever eaten. Brilliant value for money.

Great little cafe in the heart of Helmsley. Indoor and outdoor seating and a compact but delicious menu of breakfast/brunch classics. The "full English" was excellent!

Cafe
The Vinehouse Cafe at Helmsley Walled Garden is a charming family-run cafe that prides itself on using the freshest, high-quality ingredients sourced from the garden. Their ever-changing menu reflects the seasons and includes vegan options. Guests can savor fragrant loose leaf teas and freshly ground coffee from Dancing Goat while taking in picturesque garden and castle views.
Friendly staff and very welcoming! Ordered a latte to start with, then scones afterwards. There’s plenty of seats inside the glasshouse and lots of sheltered outdoor seats too. It’s dog friendly with treats available! The fruit scone was fresh and delicious!!

Edit to review: changing my review from a 3/5 star to a 1/5 star due to the owners sarcastic response to my review below. Apparently customers aren’t allowed to have their own opinions and taste now. Thanks for your ‘I’m right you’re wrong’ reply below - hilarious! My previous review: I’m giving this a 3/5 because the service and atmosphere was perfect, however the food wasn’t great. I ordered the Korean chicken Buddha bowl, and the flavours were very strong and confusing. Really sticky sauce that covered the chicken was extremely sugary and tasted similar to hoisin sauce. On top of the plethora of ingredients including dill, cheese, chickpeas, quinoa, coriander, tomatoes, cucumber and more!! Whilst it’s definitely a 5/5 for effort, less is more in this case. Whilst I appreciate I chose the Korean chicken Buddha bowl, I don’t think the menu should have options for the Buddha bowl that don’t go with the recipe. Portion sizes were great though! My partner had the mackerel sandwich which was again overpowering: dill and mayonnaise on top of mackerel and beetroot.

Absolutely fabulous hidden little treasure a short walk from the village square. Wife has dietary restrictions and they were so understanding and accommodating. Staff were wonderful, friendly, efficient. Food came out in great time and was so flavourful. Will be returning soon.
Adam L — Google review
It’s a very special place for a cup of coffee or afternoon tea. Sitting in the conservatory under the sun it’s very comfy and warm. Love it. If you only just order drinks, you have to wait to collect your drinks by the till. Or they will bring your order to your table if you order lunch meal, then you will get a wooden spoon with a number on it.
貝瑞克(Markpigpapa) — Google review
Food is as usual, indeed it is fresh but not very testy, atmosphere is also good. Price wise it is little high but service is good.
ARINDAM D — Google review
We always go to the Vinehouse kn Hemsley. We have a loyalty card, but to our surprise yesterday, we found that the policy has changed. So, instead of a stamp for each drink, it is now one stamp per purchase. So we had 3 coffees but only got 1 stamp. When did the policy change then? The food was fantastic 😋

I visited Helmsley yesterday with family to specifically visit the walled garden cafe for lunch. As my journey was 1hr 30mins I checked their opening hours before setting off (their website and Google stated they were open), I also checked their socials to check they weren’t shut like they have in the past - to my surprise when I arrived, it was closed!! The signs advertising them being open today were also all out across Helmsley. Very disappointing and frustrating, especially as I paid to travel and paid for parking. Our family were also disappointed. Too bad they missed out on a large table. I’d recommend Mannions instead as they're more reliable, especially since this is not my first experience of them being closed when they’ve advertised they’re open! ** Originally posted in January but updated my profile 3 days ago which has changed the date on this review. I don’t appreciate the cafe replying several months later saying this is a false review, when it is not!!

Helmsley Spice, located just off the market square, is a traditional Indian restaurant that has earned its place as one of the top 10 places to eat in Helmsley. In addition to classic curries and rice dishes, it offers chef specialties like Sea Bass Beraan. Visitors praise the well-presented and delicious food, with ample variety and generous portions. The restaurant is also lauded for being open late, making it a convenient choice after a long day.
The appearance of this restaurant inside and out could do with a little TLC, but the food was top quality. We ordered chicken balti shaslik, south Indian chicken korai, plain naan and chips. Hearty portions, full of flavour, served piping hot. Beautiful food !! Staff very pleasant and accommodating. It is cash only which didn't cause a problem. Would definitely recommend as an alternative to a pub meal !!

Fairly nice little spot. Eat a lot of curry all over the country so have reasonably high standards. This place was pleasant food, good spice levels, typical look of a curry house but a little shabby. Ordered the 42. Helmsley spice special, 43. Lahori Korai, both chicken, cheese naan, keema aloo & pilau rice which did turn up as keema rice. All good dishes. Spicy & full of flavour.
Rebecca H — Google review
Fantastic food. Everything was delicious. The only reason not given 5 stars for service is because they were a bit slow to acknowledge our arrival. Highly recommend
Jill K — Google review
Delicious! Lots of variety and some dishes I’d never tried before. Lamb was perfect, melt in the mouth. Huge kudos to them for being the only place serving food until late - a real saviour at the end of a long day. As others have pointed out, they only take cash. I’d also suggest that they get some jugs for tap water for the table - having to ask for a glass of tap water every few minutes felt a bit embarrassing (turns out I can’t handle my spice as well as I thought haha!). But otherwise great!

Overall, it is worth a visit, but there was a few not so good points for us. We had to wait an hour to actually start eating. Starting from 10 minutes when they forgot to give us a menu. Ordering food we were said that the recent Putin's business means their suppliers raised prices and lamb is sold at king prawn's values. The place is surrounded with the fields of lamb but ok. My husband used it as opportunity to choose king prawns, but I like the taste of lamb, so chose that. And judging how hard it was, it was born well before Putin. Don't order lamb. Order more poppadoms, because they are served with a _lot of tasty sauce. Except of the truly horrible Captain's Choice with lamb, the rest of the food was delicious. See the video I attached with sizzling plates! The first waiter, who forgot to give us the menu, quietly moved. The other guy was very smiley and served us really well, so got good tip :) Great management. We came in just before 7pm and got a table without booking. In 20minutes the restaurant was packed. I saw a few people waiting for takeaways, sitting on chairs in main hall among the eaters. They mentioned 15 people pre-booked this rather small place (by the way -mind the wooden beams!). Do book your table early. And, probably, look elsewhere if you are concerned about Covid.
Irina ( — Google review
Waiters were not very patient or user friendly. Payment was 'cash only' and they were very quick to ask if you wanted any change to both take-away and restaurant patrons.
Jayne B — Google review
Fabulous food, great portions, very welcoming. They are very busy but doing a great job
Linda W — Google review
Friendly and attentive service in cosy friendly atmosphere, traditional surroundings and clean dining area. Low beams in this old building give some character and set it apart from other Indian restaurants. Busy Friday night at 2030 with many takeaways flying out, some of which I heard had been mixed up and orders were coming back. No such problems in the restaurant as all meals came out in good time. Food is excellent. Just really nice, fresh, non too spicy (curry, peshwari nan, onion bhaji, pilau) with cold cobra in large 660ml bottles. About average on price. £40 for two curries, 2 rice, 1 nan bread, onion bhaji, 4 poppadoms and pickle tray. £20 for 2 bottles of large and 2 bottles of small cobra.

Barkers Cafe Bar, located in Helmsley, York, offers a diverse menu for breakfast and lunch. In addition to sandwiches, they serve breakfast items, paninis, tapas, and a variety of vegan and gluten-free options. The cafe provides separate vegetarian and vegan menus. Customers have praised the attentive staff who provided great service despite being busy.
Lovely small cafe for drinks and bites. Didn’t eat (see menu/prices) there but coffee was nice. Ask for it extra hot ! Geared up to use card for payments ….they don’t seem to carry mush change for cash. Clean surroundings, friendly staff.

What a great find only had a coffee and ham and beetroot ciabatta it’s was delicious

The sharing seafood platter was amazing. So much salmon, tuna in mayonnaise, anchovies and hummus with plenty of bread and pittas to dip. We had the gluten free one and it was brilliant. Definitely recommend. Staff were helpful and friendly and very obliging to our request for gluten free.

Stopped for a cappuccino which was deliciously creamy. The cafe has tables inside both outside, with large covers providing cover from rain ☔️or sunshine 🌞. Cafe is in a lovely peaceful setting, surrounded by an eclectic mix of local, indenpent shops. Store is in a wi-fi blackspot for my network, however cafe has excellent wi-fi. Staff are friendly and helpful. Will definitly be visiting again!

Ava and Josh were amazing during the busy period! They were rushed off their feet but made sure we were served and enjoying our food. Thank you for making our visit so special.

Gosh where do i start.... we have been to the farmyard bike rally at Helmsley and wanted a nice breakfast. Looks a nice place but the staff are useless got all our order wrong. I am allergic to salmon and mine came with salmon so sent it back she then gave it me back but had just took the salmon off. So sent it back again it came back with scrambled eggs which wernt cooked half raw and sausages were pink inside. I littrelly left all my breakfast and ended up at the co-op with a banana and a pastry. The guy who was cooking was very abrupt. Totally get it was busy but its no way to be so disappointed. Do not visit!!!!
Nicole C — Google review
First visit to Helmsley so after a wander round we decided on Barkers for lunch. 2 stars one for location and 1 for coffee. Service brought food out no return to see if all was ok or if we needed anything else. Food came out , didn’t look appetising maybe a few salad leaves and dressing would add flavour to very bland food. Tuna melt came with cheese non existent , tuna was cheap and nasty to n all both the panini and the tuna sandwich were bland and flavourless. Maybe if you can’t cope with a Bank Holiday crowd don’t open. Couldn’t recommend on todays offerings!!!

Cornercopia cafe is a place that impressed its customers with exceptional service. They stopped there twice, once for coffee and cake, and later for lunch. The staff's outstanding customer care stood out to them, especially in comparison to another Italian restaurant in Helmsley. They were particularly impressed by how the staff accommodated their party member's fish and sunflower oil intolerances by finding a cake without any sunflower oil.
While visiting Helmsley walled garden we walked into the village centre and came across this beautiful coffee shop. Such a great find! We had coffee (with cream) and a cappuccino. We also ordered lunch, my husband had the steak and ale pie with mushy peas and gravy, I chose the sweet and savoury platter, you choose your sandwich filling, I chose bacon, brie and cranberry, you also get a side salad with coleslaw, plus crisps and a huge scone with jam and clotted cream. It was absolutely delicious, my husband had one of my 4 sandwiches, definitely a good hearty plateful and great value for money. If we are ever in the area again we shall make this a stop for a bite to eat. The staff are very good and attentive, checking if everything is OK and clearing tables as soon as they become vacant ( throughly cleaning even the outside tables, we sat outside) usually other places we've visited outside they will clear pots away but don't always wipe tables down. Excellent service
Tina L — Google review
Nice cappuccino, pot of tea, with carrot and lemon cakes. Sat outside on the new, very comfy rattan furniture. It was a beautiful sunny day watching the world go by. Thanks to the staff for looking after us.
Mark T — Google review
The service was excellent and v friendly. The outdoor area is very comfortable and pleasant in the sun. There were some ominous clouds but fortunately the rain held off as there’s no cover for the outdoor tables, other than the parasols which weren’t up. The only reason we gave 4 stars rather than 5 was the price/value for money. We had the very tasty and juicy venison burgers from the specials menu - complete with homemade pickles. For £16, it would be better if the burger came with some chips as well as the side salad.

Visited in 2024 so decided to visit again with our little dog. It certainly doesn't disappoint, my GF Tuna sandwich with salad was delicious, the bread was the best I have tasted, would love to know who makes it. My husband had the Ham salad that to looked delicious and he said it was really good and fresh. Staff as usual were very friendly and helpful, although they were busy they never made you feel rushed. Absolutely worth a visit if you come to Helmsley. We will definitely be back before we go home. Thank you all for a lovely lunch.

Had lunch at this inviting little café on a short visit to Helmsley. It's in a charming stone cottage just a couple of minutes walk from the castle, which you get a good view of from the outside tables. It's also very homely inside, with restful blue decor, and some nice plants and pictures. The banquette was comfy, and the tables and the café generally were very clean. I was given a really warm welcome, and the lady who served me was attentive throughout my lunch, checking that the food was just right. Good choice of drinks including coffee, speciality teas, and Fentimans traditional soft drinks. I ordered a bottle of dandelion and burdock, and it was a refreshing accompaniment to my meal. The menu is not extensive, but there's a nice selection of light meals including jacket potatoes, homemade soup, sandwiches and toasties. I chose the ploughman's lunch, and it turned out to be a real feast, with thick slices of good quality ham, a pork pie, two types of cheese, dressed salad, apple slices, pickled gherkins, chutney, and two thick slices of soft seeded bread with butter. Everything on the plate was fresh and tasty, and the portions were generous. Good value for money too. Would certainly recommend this cafe both for the food and the friendly hospitality.
Valerie H — Google review
Idyllic, warm cafe and friendly service! Just right for a wide range of cold or hot tasty food (we each had Steak and Kidney pies!) and the excellent Jam & Clotted Cream Scones of course…🙃 (Only £3.25). Wide range of hot drinks and lush Hot Chocolate! Great value for money! Located just behind the pub over the bridge - closes around 4:00pm so get in early!
Adrian W — Google review
A great selection of fresh home made cakes and scones at very reasonable prices. Good choice of drink options too, both hot and cold. The staff were very friendly and helped accommodate us as there were 6 of us but not enough seats so moved some around for us. Food was brought to the table quickly and staff made sure everything was okay, despite being rather busy.

What can I say, if I could give 10* I would. Lovely unpretentious restaurant, great friendly staff that know about their food and wine. Wonderful food and a great way of eating. Prices right, and no salt pepper etc on tables, now there’s a sign of a confident chef, as well he should be. Well Done.

Didn't understand the bit about sharing when we ordered, wasn't explained very well, too rushed, so had conventional 2 courses. Husband's dish was served on a flatbread, and one main ingredient was pigs cheeks - was not expecting in the form of lardons, so disappointing. If only the young staff would explain things better.

Took my mam for a fabulous lunch today. The food is imaginative and cooked excellently. The service was attentive, friendly and professional. It is so rare that I find a restaurant that doesn't disappoint. I hope it gets the custom it deserves.

We were regulars at Rawduck in London and were gutted when it closed down, so you can imagine how quickly we booked into here when we walked past while on holiday and then read that this is where the chef had moved on to. We went for Sunday lunch and it did not disappoint - the food was delicious, the drinks list was short but well thought out, and all served in a lovely space at a very fair price. We will definitely be back for dinner if we’re in the area again.

Bantom, where the fun starts when you arrive and doesn’t stop until you leave. I’ll focus on the concept as this may be new to some people, as I’m confident that if not the best you’ve tasted, every dish will be right up there with the best. For me, the former applies: The anchovies an explosion of flavour, the arancini just as they should be but rarely are, the mussels quite unlike anything I’ve tried, the monkfish beautifully cooked and the bisk could have been a meal on its own, the turbot treated with the respect it so richly deserves, the chips … chips aren’t just chips clearly, the desserts shamelessly indulgent! A timely reminder that in terms of cooking, I’ll only ever kick about on park pitches on a Sunday morning, I may have the occasional good day out, and I believed I was OK. I’ll never grace this league though, no matter how hard I try. The menu as you’ll see consists of dishes split into various categories. Snacks or nibbles such as the Arancini ideal as an accompaniment with that first drink, or as you decide on what to have. Sharing plates such as the Chickpea Pancakes, these are slightly bigger than tapas portions, you can share or not, the beautiful thing being you can build your own tasting menu. Dishes such as the Mussels, akin to a smaller main, or the specials which last night fell into this category. There appear to be no rules, you can mix and match as the mood takes you, mix match and relax, let time pass, the dishes will arrive when ready. The same mix and match applies to the desserts, 1 per person here though, in case you need a rule of thumb. This is less of a meal out, more an A list performance, where the principle Actor will wow you with his dialogue, communicating in exquisite dishes, and those on stage with him will be solely focussed on your enjoyment. If you’re of a similar mindset to me, you’ll leave satisfied, believing that the experience was worth every penny, as well as craving the sequel.

Helmsley Walled Garden, established in 1758, is a popular attraction in Helmsley. It features apple orchards, wildflower meadows, and community allotments that create a tranquil space for visitors. The garden played a central role in the filming of 'The Secret Garden' (2020) and offers a museum showcasing the history of Helmsley Castle. Visitors can explore the extensive ruins and dog-friendly grounds with picnic areas while enjoying wonderful views over the town.
A wonderful walled garden. From the outside it does not look big but the walled garden is huge. Greenhouses, kitchen gardens, orchard and a beautiful central border section, this is done by volunteers. £10 entry and £11 with gift aid. Other ticket options available but see the website. On site cafe available to. You can also buy fruit and veg grown for a donation. Plenty in August / Sept / Oct. See the ticket office on arrival. Allow several hours and take a picnic. No onsite parking but a 5 minute walk there is a pay and display which is also for the castle.

A very serene and beautiful garden against the backdrop of Helmsley castle! We parked the car at Cleveland Way car park (£6 for 6 hours), so had plenty of time to explore! The clouds came over which meant we popped into the cafe for coffee and scones for a bit! The glasshouse was converted into an interesting cafe with plenty of fixtures to create interests all around! When the sun finally broke through, it was so pleasant to walk round! There’s still some remaining spring flowers dotted about which added splashes of colour amongst the greenery. It’s completely dog friendly in all areas which was so nice! She got a treat when we purchased the ticket which she loved, thank you!!

A delightful stroll for anyone even with limited mobility. A bit expensive (not the same price as on this post, a bit less at £10 each) but the entrance fee helps to keep the gardens.

A great walled garden, paths that are easy on the feet, wheel chair accessible, chickens and ducks, statues , scent from the roses is lovely , 10 quid day ticket or 15 for yearly pass . Helmsley castle overlooks the gardens .

Lovely gardens to spend an hour or two. £10 entry is a bit steep as you could get round quickly. There is a large, busy cafe with lovely outdoor tables but I didn't have time to go in.

Beautiful gardens lots of different interest. The cafe is pretty good as well.
DE5 P — Google review
Beautiful gardens with a great variety of flowers on show. It was a little expensive to get in for the size of the actual gardens (hence the 4/5). The food and service in the cafe were excellent

This is a wonderful place to visit if you're in the area. A glorious restored garden you could spend hours in & getting ideas for your own garden, or just enjoying he tranquility, the scents, and the colours. Refreshments are available at the tea room, and it lovely to sit outside on a sunny day - beware of all the small birds right beneath your table, looking for crumbs ! The entrance fee also allows you to enter free if you return within 12 months.

Stopped off in Helmsley and decided to get a coffee and something to eat. Called in Porters for first time and loved it. Had some lovely quiche that came with salad. Nice portion size for lunchtime and thoroughly enjoyed it. Good coffee too. Next time in Helmsley that's where we are going.

We stopped at the Porters café for refreshments. My favourite dessert is meringue so I couldn't abstain myself from ordering a slice of their lemon meringue pie. What a delight for my taste buds! I can easily say the presentation and the taste of it reached perfection. The service was immaculate, the lovely ladies were friendly and I liked their white broderie blouses. The flowers and plants on the terrace brought colour and tranquility. The whole place is lovely decorated too. I highly recommend it.

Crema Coffee House is a charming daytime spot in Helmsley, offering comfort and delicious treats. It's one of the many cafes and visitor attractions supporting the local area. The cafe, located in the town center, is known for its friendly and helpful staff who go out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. In addition to great coffee and tea, they also serve a delightful Ploughmans Lunch.
Stopped here for lunch and it was that good we will definitely be visiting again on our next visit to Helmsley The reception from the ladies behind the counter was extremely warm and immediately made you feel welcome and at home There was plenty of choice on the menu and what we did have was extremely good. The homemade curried parsnip soup that my wife had was fantastic and my cheese and pickle toastie was probably the best I have had in any cafe, with loads of melted cheese and served with a nice salad, coleslaw and crisps. It was also a lovely relaxed atmosphere in the place which made for a really great experience

Fantastic Coffee Spot in the Heart of Helmsley! Creama Coffee is an absolute gem in Helmsley. If you’re a coffee lover, this place is a must-visit. Their coffee beans are top-notch — rich, aromatic, with beautifully balanced flavor notes and, thankfully, not too acidic. You can tell they care about the quality of their roast. I tried both the latte and the flat white — while the latte was smooth and enjoyable, the flat white really stood out. It had a bolder character with deep, strong coffee and roast notes that still remained smooth on the palate. One of the best I’ve had in the area. They also offer oat milk, which was really, really good — creamy and complemented the espresso perfectly without overpowering the taste. Only small downside: I wouldn’t recommend the chai if you’re used to traditional Indian-style chai. It’s more of a Western take, so fellow Asians or chai purists might find it lacking in spice and depth. That said, for coffee alone, Creama is absolutely worth the stop. Great vibe, lovely staff, and serious about their brews.

We recently visited Helmsley and had breakfast at the Feather Trail Cafe. The staff were very professional and friendly. We were blown away by the level of quality produce used in our breakfast. I can’t recommend the breakfast enough. It was stunning. Their cappuccino again was made so delicately and tasted amazing. The overall food and drink cost was low for the level of service and quality. We will be back for sure.

What a fantastic little place! This is my third time being here with my partner and every time it just gets better and better. Personally, I always go for the full breakfast and it really does not disappoint, all cooked to perfection! The service is great and the staff and super friendly and helpful! We even got to meet the owners puppy and it sat with us while we ordered (pleasing my partner a lot). Variety of food choice on the menu, but if you just fancy a snack, the cakes and coffee are unreal too! Will return. Again and again.

Lovely experience here last week. We popped in around lunch time and were greeted warmly by the staff who showed us to our table and brought water. The decor was vibrant and welcoming, and the staff were attentive, but not overbearing, which is nice. All the food was lovely, and a generous serving for what we ordered. The server even exchanged the onion relish for tomato ketchup for my daughter without us asking, which was a lovely touch. We'd definitely visit again, such a nice little place!

Stopped in here for a cone while walking around Helmsley on a Sunday afternoon and it was lovely. Lots of flavors, cute little sitting area, and friendly staff. Even witnessed a kid’s unfortunate mishap dropping his ice cream on the floor and the staff got him a new one right away, haha. My group loved the rhubarb crumble which we were told sells out quickly, and also enjoyed the salted caramel popcorn. I had the strawberry and vanilla flavors which were both delicious, especially the strawberry. Great little spot we’ll visit again next time we’re in town!

8 course tasting menu and all of them were absolutely beautiful. Found this when Googling for somewhere to eat while we were on holiday and struck gold with a delightful treat. As part of that 'tasting menu' trend, if that's what you're after, you won't be disappointed. A lovely dining room, with semi-open kitchen and very attentive and knowledgeable staff. Deep Blue Fish & Chips in Helmsley is a must-visit spot for delicious gluten-free fish and chips. Visited the store today for a takeout order, 3 adult fish and chips and two kids meals plus a few extra bits. The adults fish was tasty on the whole, even if rather small compared to most fish and chip restaurants. The mushy peas were very peppery. The main disappointment was when I broke in half a fish bite for my two year old and discovered three bones. I then decided to check the other fish bites and discover all four in the meal contained multiple bones, One fish bite had an astonishing 9 bones (pictured) Whilst I understand it is impossible to ensure all bones are removed, I think the amount was unacceptable especially considering they are marketed as a kids meal. If I had not broken my child’s in half the consequences could have been devastating. We did try to contact the restaurant direct but had no joy

Not worth it. I entered deep blue fish and chips approximately 1840 hours ordering a large amount of fish and chips, as I was waiting I overhead one of the staff members shout “go easy on the chips” in front of customers showing no signs of generosity towards me the customer, I also noticed that the end of each piece of fish was like a piece of altberg boot leather and could hammer a 10 inch nail into a plank of wood. as shown in the image below. Continuing from my previous point the batter on the fish was like it had been tortured there was no white meat on the inside it was like opening a big present from your nan at Christmas and opening it and it just being a pair socks

Food was absolutely delicious. Nick (serving) was very helpful and friendly when explaining portion sizes, talking about the fish options and even came out to offer us extra chairs as he saw we had our handful with a group of children. Then comes the fish. The haddock was absolutely delicious. Thick, juicy and cooked perfectly with a golden batter. Thanks Sophie (Fryer) Kids ate all of their food (sausage and fish bites) which says a lot! Great food. Great service. Thanks!

The fish and chips in this establishment was fantastic, in fact they were so good we went twice in 4 days, also a head's up FOR DAVIE AND LEON , for their superb customer service and efficient way they dealt with customers, we will definitely come back to the HELMSLEY shop again very soon. If anyone in this area, I would strongly recommend you give it a try, you won't be disappointed ,you can also eat in the lovely clean restaurant with very reasonably priced hot drinks.

UPDATE, been in here today to give this a second chance, ordered large Haddock and chips, peas n gravy, just short of £16, didn’t even hear the server ask for a large haddock to put in, food came after nearly 25 mins wait, and what a disappointment, was one layer of chips cooked in dirty fat and a fish caked in old batter not to mention not worthy of being called large. The worst thing that put me off was the bins overflowing with used takeaway boxes INSIDE the shop right next to the serving counter, the guy on the counter said it’s perfectly fine and said if they’re outside they get more maggots because there’s no flies in the shop, ‘WOW’ , think he must be sat on the moon mowing cheese, surely if someone could be bothered to empty the bins regularly instead of being idle and having incredibly limited intelligence there wouldn’t be any maggots, absolute disgusting, check pictures…, I did get my money back, won’t be going there again, rip offs. Some fake reviews I guess. It’s not 4.8 stars, if that’s the scale , Thompsons A64 must be 14.8 stars, it’s ok for the area ,lovely lady serving behind the counter, 5 times better than that con artist ( Laucias) other chippy in Helmsley, although some of the sizes of fish look like they’ve come out of a small garden pond. These are the regular size not ‘specials’

Popped in for a vegan breakfast as it the only place open for breakfast on a Saturday morning before 10am! Although there’s nothing really obviously vegan on the menu, they will adapt the food for far a plat-based preference. Tea and porridge (without the honey) for breakfast. Tea was good (loose tea) and the offered a refill of water several times. Porridge came in a oversized mug/bowl and was fresh. The compote berries lifted it. Sat at the window on a high seat with power and a view across the marketplace. Nice staff and nice place for a working breakfast.

Visited the bar in July early on a Friday evening. Nice bar with a few locals drinking at the bar. I asked the girl behind the bar for a pint of local beer and a gin and tonic. She got me the drinks and asked me for £15.50. I obviously queried this and was given the till receipt to look at, which indicated that I'd been charged for a double gin. I told the girl that I didn't order a double and her fairly curt response was"If you don't specify a single you automatically get a double" REALLY ??? The girl reluctantly took the double gin back and reluctantly replaced it with a single .I'm fairly sure that this practice can't be right!

Only came for dinner and drinks. The starters were nice, but the mains were a bit underwhelming unfortunately and we skipped dessert due to this. Whilst initially service was quick and staff were both courteous and friendly, they appeared to be having problems managing the amount of tables due to what seemed to be staffing issues. Upon eventually managing to receive our bill after nearly half an hour, we then had to repeatedly ask to be able to pay it. Overall the food was okay, but nothing worth returning for and the staff are pleasant enough, but more are required for an efficient service.

Enjoyed our visit, superior room overlooking the marketplace, lovely room but bathroom was extremely small, needed more space to be inkeeping with a superior room. Good pub grub, breakfast good quality, cooked well but no buffet on show, had to guess what cereal etc was available. Staff all friendly, welcoming and helpful. Will stay again but need a bigger bathroom!

Visited the restaurant as a party of 6 on a Sunday lunchtime. Staff welcoming, but appeared unable to get the order correct from the outset. Drink order incorrect and when corrected, suggested the error had been on our part. After ordering, we were then told that one of the vegetarian options should not have been on the menu anymore, therefore was not available anymore. We therefore asked for one of the vegetarian starters to be made as a main, but was told this was not possible. When the dish did arrive, it was wrong and contained meat. By the time this error had been rectified, the rest of the party had almost finished their meals. Food quality also poor and not worth the price. The bread served with the soup was still frozen in the middle, and the fries with the burger also undercooked. I would not expect to pay £18.50 for a meal which is served undercooked. My faith in having the above issues corrected was lost after the other errors we had witnessed. I would not return, nor recommend others to visit. There are much better options locally which provide better service and better quality food. A shame.

We didn't stay over so can only comment on food and service but what a lovely pub! The staff were super friendly, service with quick and the food was excellent. We had a mix of veggie and meat eaters and we loved the selection of veggie options. The portions were generous and the price reasonable, especially given the quality and the location in the main square. Dog friendly with water bowls, perfect for us and our lab.

Came in for lunch after an appointment with my wife. Food was great with ample portions, service was swift with a smile. My wife had one of the biggest parmos I have seen which she had to have boxed up and I had the Pie of the Week which was Steak and Kidney. I had never been here before but will definitely be back in when I get the opportunity.

Nestled within the stunning expanse of North York Moors National Park, The Hare Restaurant offers a unique dining experience in a beautifully restored 12th-century inn. This award-winning establishment prides itself on its seasonal menu, featuring delightful dishes like monkfish with apple dashi. Guests can enjoy characterful accommodations adorned with exposed beams and stone walls, making for an inviting atmosphere. Open only Thursday through Saturday evenings, The Hare is a popular destination that often sees reservations filled months ahead.
Nothing to fault. Everything was excellent, very imaginative to have a simple menu in an enveloppe , listed as snacks, beef 1, beef 2, tomato etc and surprised when the dishes arrived.Full of flavour and freshness. Service delightful by Liz. Best meal.

We had an absolutely fantastic meal/experience at The Hare. The Food and Service was amazing. The atmosphere was extremely relaxed, warm and friendly, we cannot thank all the staff enough. The whole experience was just as amazing as any of the Michelin starred restaurants that we have been extremely fortunate to have visited in the past. We would highly recommend The Hare to anyone. Fantastic Meal from Wonderful Hosts.Liz was absolutely brilliant Front of House and both she and Karen were superb at serving the tantalising Tasting Menu.Paul is a chef of rare talent.I recently dined in a Three Michelin Star restaurant in Italy and his cooking was better.Menu was imaginative and innovative and truly outstanding as were the selected wines. The whole experience was topped off with a great breakfast. Thanks so much Liz Paul and Karen hope to see you again soon...

Wonderful little place tucked away in the significant shadow of the couple of Michelin starred titans down the road. Great rooms, a fab dinner with interesting wines and stellar service from Liz and her team. Breakfast is amongst the best I’ve ever had. Give it a try!
Chris R — Google review
What can I say but 'perfection'. From the moment you arrive and are greeted in the lounge area in front of a roaring fire by Liz it's like a journey through a culinary wonderland. Firstly drinks and amuse b'ouche which were delectable. Then you are escorted to your table which is not cramped as only 7 tables are available each evening to experience this foodies heaven. Depending on which tasting menu you have decided on you then spend the next 3 to 4 hours eating the most delicious food accompanied by descriptions and explanations from Liz as well as plenty of fun and friendly chatter (unless you want to be left alone to eat in which case your wishes are catered for as is everything else). I don;t really want to go into detail and ruin the surprise of the dishes and hope the photos do them justice, but, just to say the tastes and flavours and contrasts were stunning. If a michelin star isn't forthcoming I don't know why as I have eaten in many restaurants and this ranks alongside the best of them. One final mention is to try the pairing drinks - perfectly paired and sometimes surprising, but, never dull this was the best pairing combination my wife had ever had. All I can say is 'BRAVO'

The staff here were lovely and the food was great, not faultless there were a couple of things we felt were amiss (reminded us of Sat Bains - but not Sat Bains perfection). Still would still highly recommend. Glad we tried.

We had the most amazing evening and night at The Hare. Thankyou. Thoughtful attention to detail very step of the way, including all the finishing touches in the rooms. The food was fabulous, and the wine paring made the whole experience for us, especially with Liz talking us through it all making it interesting as well as delicious. Recommend without hesitation. The on-site restaurant serves up classic pub fare, while the bar/lounge provides a welcoming atmosphere to unwind with your favorite drink.
We were very fortunate to get a table as it was the start of a busy bank holiday but the staff rearranged things to get a table for my wife, granddaughter and myself. My wife is gluten free and thankfully the menu had options. When the food came we were all astounded with both the quality and quantity. Eating out these days seems a very expensive event but this was excellent food at a very reasonable cost. The staff were brilliant in ensuring our time there was a very enjoyable experience and definitely a place to return to when we are next in the area.

Just went as I saw the ‘dogs allowed’ sign to see if they had a table available on the Friday night of the storm coming in. Was made to feel very welcomed, as was Maggie our Rottie. Lovely menu. I had the homemade soup, that was delicious. Graeme had the brie, which looked great. Graeme followed that with the ribs and I had a small Lasagne, which after the soup was enough. Service was excellent and all the food was delicious and came out hot! Stayed for extra drink as got talking to some lovely people from Lincoln. Good night.

Greeted by Louis as soon as we walked and he moved two tables together for our group of 6. We ordered from the main menu, Lasagne, burgers, and pizza; it was absolutely delicious. Our food was brought out by Nicky, who was so lovely and helpful. We have been three times this holiday and visited here last year too. This place is relaxed, friendly and welcoming. The food is amazing and really reasonably priced for decent home cooked food. Visit, you won't be disappointed.

Very welcoming warm friendly place. Lovely menu to suit all tastes, price's Very reasonable for the great quality and presentation. My husband had chicken breast in mushroom & white wine sauce with mash, with a side of mixed vegetables, he said it was delicious. I had hot beef baguette with fries and gravy jug, this was outstanding the beef was plentiful & tender, gravy unbelievably tasty. Everything complimented each other. Exceptional cleaning of tables once vacated. Compliments to the chef & team.

A very friendly, welcoming pub. All the staff were lovely, particularly Connor who served food and cleared tables. It was refreshing to see someone with such a strong work ethic. The room was large enough to accommodate all the paraphernalia we need to bring when accompanied by our greyhound. The location was perfect, right in the centre of Helmsley. We couldn't have had a better short break.

We came in for lunch , it was already busy in the area of the bar we were sitting. Served promptly with a friendly face, asked for a couple of adaptions to menu as was supporting an autistic client. This was no problem. Lunch served within minutes. Very tasty. Plates cleared promptly and we were checked on throughout . Lovely experience

Visited the area yesterday and popped in for a bite to eat in the evening. The staff were both friendly and very welcoming. Couldn’t do enough for us and made us feel completely at home. Ordered the steak and ale pie and a lasagna. The lasagna was delicious, cheesy, creamy and good quality meat. You could tell it was homemade and a portion so big that my partner had to have half of it boxed up to take home. I’m always hesitant to order a steak and ale pie from somewhere new incase I’m disappointed as it’s my go to meal and I’m very particular about how they are made. Nothing compares to my grandma’s so I normally don’t risk it. This one was one of the best I’ve had in years. Homemade with the best beef that fell apart on the fork. Rich gravy and nice homemade pastry. I’m a typical tight Yorkshireman that was a bit nervous paying £16 for something I’m normally let down by but I risked it and was so pleasantly surprised that I very nearly booked a room for that night so I could have it again the next day. Reminded me of how grandma used to make it. If we are anywhere near the area I will definitely go out of my way to eat that again. A massive thumbs up to the chef and the very friendly happy staff. Keep up the good work 👍

We ate here several times over our weeks stay In Helmsley. The food was tasty though relatively standard pub fare. The portions however were large, particularly the lasagna! What marked it out was the service. The staff were clearly trying to go the extra mile to make sure you enjoyed your meal and your time in the Royal Oak..

Canadian Fields offers a luxurious glamping experience with spacious tents featuring comfortable furniture, a well-equipped kitchenette, and a lovely log burner. The private toilet and shower facilities are fabulous, and the outside decking area is perfect for relaxing. The on-site restaurant serves outstanding food with generous portions, while the staff provides excellent customer service. The flat fields provide ideal pitching spots, and the immaculate facilities include home-like showers, laundry amenities, and a well-stocked shop.
4 nights spent in a luxury glamping tent. Spacious, comfy furniture, great little kitchenette with everything you need, lovely log burner with logs provided, charcoal BBQ, really nice decking area with table & chairs, pretty outside lighting, fabulous private toilet & shower facilities. The food from the restaurant was outstanding. Huge portions & excellent value for money. We chose to eat in our tent & it was delivered to us. Great customer service & really friendly staff. Clean & well maintained site 🙂

Lovely campsite , nice flat service to pitch the tent. Facilities were clean and accessible. Park was ideal for the kids to keep them entertained and to top it off the weather was perfect for our time away.

This is a superb campsite for either families or couple or small groups of any description. The campsite is wonderfully clean all the time. The toilets and shower/ washing facilities are nice and kept clean. There were about 15 there while we were there so the two washing up sinks could be overrun of everyone went at once. The water is nice and hot though so you can actually clean your dishes. There is a restaurant on site but we did not go to it. There were NO problems with insects which some campsites can struggle with. Electric available. Open fires permitted of of the ground and do not damage the grass. Little shop on site had basic necessities too 11/11. Top notch campsite!

Lovely campsite. Playpark for the kids and not too far away from the tents so you feel safe for the children to play. Showers unisex but private enough. Clean facilities. Sutton bank close by to go for great walks/bike trails etc.

Had meal here in the big tepee, which is excitingly styled with a Native American theme inclusing artifacts around the tent. The theme though isn't applied to the foods, which is a shame but maybe understandable as bison aren't common in the area! The food is great quality & there's plenty of options, both for mains & dessert. Food arrived quickly & the staff were very friendly.

Dreadful---We were advised by a waiter that we could have a starter from the menu, followed by the buffet, and pay a "small extra charge". When we got the bill, we had been charged full price for the starter and also the buffet. When we questioned this, we were told the chef had said we couldn't do this, but we were not told. Staff very rude about this. Never going again.

What a great find! We had a wonderful meal here on a Tuesday Grill Night. Chef was cooking outside on the grills, he was friendly and chatty and cooked great food! We were a group of 4 adults, 2 children and a baby and we were all catered for! My husband had the mixed grill...what an absolutely monumental amount of food! Such good value for money. The atmosphere is lovely - a spectacular tree covered in fairy lights in the centre makes it unique and picturesque. Desserts were delicious too, and we even tried a few mocktails. Lovely place - hope to visit again some day.

We ate here for dinner and breakfast. It is beautifully designed with a fantastic tree center piece. Music during both the evening and morning meal seemed perfectly chosen to compliment the ambient atmosphere but without intruding conversation. The food was fantastic, very tasty and generous quantities. This was served quickly and by lovely warm, friendly staff. We had a lovely relaxed meal together and felt really welcomed. I honestly couldn't have improved anything. I just wish we lived nearer, but I will visit again with family and also friends when I stay at the spa.

Gorgeous surroundings and inside area. however, I'd give a miss. The wine was good, but the service was slow. Two tables had to cancel / reschedule their next course as they had treatments booked. If it had been just one table I'd assume poor time management but as it was two tables I came to a different conclusion. I had to ask for my table to be wiped as it was quite dirty. I had to call over staff to take my order. And I paid at the bar. The food, I asked for a Caesar salad (popular on the menu apparently - clearly as most people haven't eaten there more than once) I requested no croutons, as everything by was very carb heavy on the menu. I asked if any chance of more bacon instead - to which I was told I'd be charged and implied the chef wouldn't like it. Well, said chef made a Caesar salad from 5-6 cos leaves, a bundle of (not crispy) shredded bacon, and chicken reminiscent of plastic packed you find in the deli isle of your local supermarket. No anchovies. The Parmesan was shredding fine, not in the way a Caesar should be and the tiniest dollop of Caesar dressing. To all salad lovers out there, this was disappointing and really quite sad. For £16 I expected a mountain of greens, fresh hot chicken and crispy bacon bits. Large curls of Parmesan. Honestly, check your chef.

A lovely restaurant, spoiled by poor food and inattentive staff. Dipping oil/olives starters were served with bread containing dried fruit. Salmon was raw in the middle and everything on the plate was lukewarm at best. Fruity bread made another appearance on the cheese board. Took ages to order our food because the bored young waitress, who was hanging around doing very little was studiously avoiding eye contact. Clearly, we weren't sat at one of 'her' tables; we weren't able to place our order until another waitress appeared. We have eaten lunch at The Dome and were very happy, but it appears to have deteriorated - what a shame!

What a difference a year makes! Starters: The prawn and smoked salmon. A layer of lettuce on the bottom with the prawns on top of that in a very watered down cocktail sauce. This was then covered with strips of salmon. Bland to say the least with no imagination in terms of presentation. Mains. I had the pork. The only hot item on the plate were the roast potatoes. Everything else was warm at best whilst the Yorkshire Pud was soggy. We tried 4 salt cellars and none worked until eventually a member of staff brought some loose in a small bowl for us to sprinkle over the food with our fingers. She admitted they had nothing but trouble with the cellars so why put them out? No utensils to serve up the veg either. We had to use knife and fork. Staff were distant at best. They then had the cheek to try and charge a 10% service fee which I politely turned down. I also reported everything wrong with the meal to a young lad who took my money but in view of my report, he did not appear to be too bothered. Despite wonderful quality of both food and staff across last year for which I gave great reviews, I doubt I will be returning!

We had the most wonderful experience at Coopers of Helmsley for my dad’s birthday. Jacob and the team couldn’t have been more helpful in organising everything – nothing was too much trouble. We had a party of 30, and every single meal was served hot, delicious, and beautifully presented. The food was incredible and the service was spot on. Thank you to all the team for making the evening so special – we couldn’t have asked for better. Thank you, we will certainly visit again!

Tried Coopers for the first time whilst away in Helmsley and so glad we did! Friendly staff, nice atmosphere…although very warm in restaurant it didn’t spoil the meal. The food was excellent. I had the special (pie) which was (as I told the staff) probably the best pie I’ve ever had! Seriously good and told cooked in house by the chef…she needs an award for them!! Would definitely recommend giving this place a try…I’ll be booking again for sure.

I had read excellent reviews of Coopers, and was a little underwhelmed on the basis of my experience. Staff were welcoming, the restaurant was not busy, however I had to attract attention from waiting staff on a couple of occasions - I had steak pie with a rather bland gravy(the gravy seemed to be a standard served with different meals) - overcooked chips (I had watched them sit for around 10 mins under the heat light while the rest of my meal was prepared) - the peas were bland and were served a few mins after my main meal. The kitchen is clearly visible for all to see - the chef was very laid back to the point he was spending time on his mobile phone in the midst of food preparation - perhaps that explains why the peas were late! Average meal - average service. I am pleased others experiences are clearly more positive than mine.

Well where to begin! We booked a table for 13 of us in advance for 7pm as a leaving party for a work colleague. Our food order was taken at 7.40pm, didn't order starters just mains. Our food arrived just after 9pm! Needless to say we were all pretty ravenous by this time. Customers came in after us and had eaten three courses in the time it took our food to arrive. Had the food been good we could probably have got over the wait but unfortunately it was sub standard, lacking flavour and some of it not even hot. After complaining and having to argue our case it was agreed that we would not be paying for our food just our drinks. A very memorable evening for all wrong reasons. Very disappointing.

I was invited to join a party of 12 people for dinner. We were booked in for 7pm. We had drinks and our order was taken. Our mains arrived at 9pm. Other smaller parties of two and three who had arrived after us got food before us. At 9 our food arrived. The server shouted at us and literally threw the plates and food at the table. The food was lukewarm. Chicken Tikka Masala was very sweet, tasteless and chicken was tough. Rice was cold and hard. If you want to wait 2 hours for food which tastes no better than a microwave dinner then this is the restaurant for you!
