Knaresborough Castle and Courthouse Museum is a romantic ruined fortress with Norman heritage, dating back to the 1300s. Situated on a green clifftop with stunning river views, this North Yorkshire attraction played a significant role in England's power struggles during the Plantagenet age and the Civil War of Oliver Cromwell. The castle features remnants such as the Kings Tower, fragments of once mighty walls, the Sallyport, and a deep moat.
Absolutely beautiful place to visit! Knaresborough Castle is a charming historic site with an incredible view over the river and the stunning bridge below. The riverside area is perfect for a peaceful walk, with a few lovely pubs right under the bridge where you can enjoy the view. The castle itself is small but full of character, and for just around £4 you can explore it inside. The whole town of Knaresborough is truly picturesque, colourful houses, cozy cafés, and beautiful little streets everywhere. I was lucky to visit during autumn, when the leaves made everything even more magical, and the shops were decorated for Halloween, which added such a fun and vibrant atmosphere. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Yorkshire!

It's the ruins a castle built in the 1100s, and then rebuilt in the 1300s. Nothing particularly impressive compared to the other castle we've seen, at least not from the outside (we didn't went inside). But you do get a good view of the viaduct from here.
Estela Z — Google review
This place has an extremely beautiful view of river and viaduct from its ground. You don’t need to pay tickets to roam on their ground. But castle and courthouse itself is rich. The staff are fantastic. Very helpful and polite.
Fitria P — Google review
Had a lovely day, weather was sunny, castle is well brocken up but you can get into the dungeon as they call it and up to the first floor too. The court house is interesting to look around as well. Lots of views over the river, and handy for the town center easy walk.

Wasn't planning on visiting Knaresborough but took up the suggestion from someone at the hotel we were staying at in Harrogate. Unexpected andsurprising. The castle and the view to the River Nidd quite awesome. Well worth it and only a short bus ride from Harrogate too so no need to take the car.
Beverley M — Google review
Well preserved ruins of the castle. Very scenic view of the viaduct. The views are stunning.

Nice, calm and serene atmosphere. Well preserved ruins of the castle. Very scenic view of the via duct. The museum is closed on Monday.

This beautiful and charming town has a long history with a castle and museum on top of the hill. Basically its ruins of a castle which are free but you have to pay for tower and museum. The castle location gives you an amazing views across to the town as it’s at top on the hill. It has a park within the castle walls. There’s a parking as well. From top of the castle, you can have best stunning views of river Nidd and viaduct. Woth a visit to capture some astonishing photos of viaduct and river as well as scenery around.

Mother Shipton's Cave, located in Knaresborough along the River Nidd, is a historical site linked to the legendary 15th-century prophetess and fortune-teller, Mother Shipton. The cave is believed to be her birthplace and where she practiced herbalism and made predictions about future events. One of the main attractions at this ancient woodland site is the Petrifying Well, known for turning ordinary objects into stone.
Well it’s been many years since I last went and initially I found the price off putting. However; I just had the most amazing day and would highly recommend it to families. I got there early so was able to park inside the facility, but there is a big car park just across the road. I loved that the walk was atmospheric. It is quite a walk so heed the advice and wear comfortable shoes, also because the wishing well and cave area are quite damp and wet. There is quite a few steps, but the great thing is there are covered stroller parking spots! There is an amazing playground, where my kids would have had a blast. There is also a lovely cafe run by the wonderful Diana, a gift shop with Alex, and Peter at the gate was a fountain of information. They were setting up for a Halloween Event that I’m sad I can’t attend. £39 a car load of up to 5 people is extremely reasonable- definitely a day trip that all would enjoy. Skeletons and witches and spiders are all welcome. Absolutely a day to remember and an honour to learn more about Mother Shipton. What a sad story…. Oh, and Diana thanks for bringing a #SconeAsInGone lady. Those other two say it the wrong way!!
P_Addler — Google review
We visited Mother Shipton’s Cave as a family of four, three adults and one 10-year-old girl and it was such a magical experience! ✨ The whole place feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The woodland walk is peaceful and beautiful, surrounded by tall ancient trees, charming paths, and hidden surprises. My niece was absolutely enchanted by the wishing well and the old tree where visitors press coins into the bark for good luck. Throwing coins into the water felt like something out of a storybook. The wooden sculptures, fairy-tale cottages, and mystical atmosphere make this place truly special. It’s the perfect mix of nature, history, and imagination a wonderful day out for families, nature lovers, or anyone who still believes in a bit of magic. 🌿💫

Went for a birthday treat as visiting the area and as a couple with a dog. The place was busy but not overly and had a great family feel. We wish we could have taken our kiddies here when younger, they would have loved this. We enjoyed the Halloween experience and so good to have somewhere that is dog friendly. Loved the autumnal walk and pretty lights. The queue for the hot chocolate and drinks was large so would be nice to have two venues for refreshments but people bought their own as well so we could have planned to do this. Lovely outdoor walk with the dog and interesting site. Poor mother shipton and her 15 year old mum, what a life. When you think about it a poor bullied young woman who made the best of her tragic life and now we visit the cave she lived in. The sites not that deep though lol so it is child friendly in presentation, but as an adult visiting it's quite thoughtful. I love the history and that it's been visited for so many years. Worth a trip, and dog friendly. Thanks
Lisa G — Google review
Fantastic, really enjoyed the whole experience. There is audio so don't forget to press the button. Did not realise it was dog friendly also, except not allowed in the gift shop. There are lots of seating areas should you wish to bring a picnic. No problem getting parked as was quiet and we were only charged pedestrian charge. We went first week in September so I imagine it would be very busy when schools are off.

My son treated me to a fabulous time here today. All I can say is go!!! Its well worth it. The story of Mother Shipton is delivered with respect and compassion. I dont know how much the entry fee is as this was a gift . I had a delicious hot chocolate and a cheese and onion pasty halfway through the walk and was served by 2 lovely polite and friendly ladies. Later , I made my wish at the well. The gift shop is small but well stocked. All.in all a lovely place to visit. Give yourself about 3 hours.
Muna — Google review
A beautiful gem, the living history. The forest walk is amazing, throughout the whole year. The peak is Halloween: amazing programs, kind and helpful staff members. The waterfall and its stoney effects on artifacts is world unique phenomenon, lovely gift shop. Ideal for couples, families (with pram, elderly people or doggos). Parking lot is big enough: simply must visit, to make life memories.

We’ve visited Mother Shipton’s Cave quite a few times now – first as a couple, and more recently as a family with our son. It’s easily one of our favourite places to visit together, and somehow we fall in love with it a little more every time we go. Autumn is by far our favourite season to visit – the colours, the crisp air, and the atmosphere perfectly capture everything we love about this time of year. There’s so much to see and do for both adults and children, and it always feels like stepping into a little pocket of magic.
Trayana H — Google review
Absolutely outstanding place to visit. We visited during the fairy trail exhibition and had the most magical time. There was lots to do and see. There was a little fairy village with lots of different information, we visited the petrifying waterfall that turns items to stone over a period of time which was absolutely fascinating. There is a little gift shop at the end of the walks which was really weird and wonderful.

The House in the Rock, originally known as Fort Montague, is a castle-like building carved into a crag by a linen weaver and his son between 1770 and 1791. While it used to be a popular tourist attraction, it has been a private residence since 2000. Although not open to visitors, its historical significance and unique architecture make it an intriguing sight from the steep path leading up to the chapel.
This is a tiny chapel with a garden area. We learned a little about its history from a lady tending the garden.
Mandy — Google review
Visited on our way to whitby. The gate was locked at 11.30 am on Friday. So, I couldn't see and photograph the knight or the church. I understand locking the church, but surely a local could have unlocked the gate so peoplecouldsee the outside! Nothing on the website says that the gate would be locked!
KevP6345 — Google review
Disappointed to find that visiting is only on a Sunday so access was not possible. I could vaguely make out some sort of carved medieval figure.
Anne S — Google review
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag is one of Knaresborough’s most distinctive and captivating landmarks, offering visitors a rare blend of history, craftsmanship, and quiet spirituality. Carved directly into the limestone cliffside in the early 15th century, the chapel stands as an extraordinary example of devotion and artistry, and it provides a uniquely atmospheric experience that sets it apart from more conventional historical sites. Despite its small size, the space feels remarkably significant; every carved detail, from the doorway to the interior niches, reflects centuries of care and reverence. The approach to the chapel contributes significantly to its charm. Nestled just off the riverside path, it emerges suddenly and almost magically from the rock, inviting visitors to pause, explore, and reflect. Once inside, the peacefulness is immediate. The stone walls, cool and textured, create a sense of calm that encourages quiet contemplation. Visitors often comment on how the space feels both intimate and monumental at the same time, a testament to the skill and sensitivity of the original craftsmen. The surrounding area is equally picturesque, making the chapel an ideal stop for anyone walking through Knaresborough’s scenic Nidd Gorge pathways. Volunteers and caretakers do an exceptional job maintaining the site and sharing its story with genuine enthusiasm. Their stewardship ensures that the chapel remains accessible, respectful, and rich with context for both regular worshippers and casual tourists. Whether you are drawn by history, architecture, or simply a desire for a tranquil moment in a beautiful setting, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag offers a memorable and deeply rewarding experience. It is truly one of Knaresborough’s most remarkable treasures
Sean P — Google review
Brilliant historic place to visit just to see it. Its history goes right back to the crusades. It's only open on a Sunday usually between 12 and 2. No entry fee but you can leave a donation.
Ricky H — Google review
Open on certain days, I've only been inside once when I was about thirteen years old it had a lot of lit candles very atmospheric. Always loved this building and the Knight or Saint carved out in the rock. Mystery who this is
Jordan B — Google review
Looks pretty from the pictures but when it’s not open you can’t even look outside it, why would you lock it up so no one can see it except for a couple hours on a Sunday?

Nestled within the castle grounds of Knaresborough, Bebra Gardens is a charming park that offers visitors a delightful escape into nature. Formerly known as the Moat Gardens, this serene spot features winding pathways flanked by mature conifers and vibrant herbaceous borders. As you stroll through, you'll encounter well-kept rockeries and stunning views of the River Nidd and its iconic viaduct.
A very well kept, clean and tidy park which really is a nice hidden gem. Great mix of trees, plants, bushes and grass and plenty of benches to relax on as well. In the Summer there is a paddling pool for the kids and it has good access to both the Castle and the Riverside.

Free to enter botanic style gardens. Hill with steps. Steep at times. From castle at the top, gardens middle and down to the river café and rowing boats.

Beautiful public park that is well maintained. Great to have a relaxing stroll around and take in the nature.

Nice quiet public garden. However very steep in places. And at the riverside a lot of steps to reach the riverside. Best for those folk fit enough to handle the terrain.
Ginger S — Google review
Beautifully well-maintained park with manicured bushes, wonderful flora and a paddling pool for kids and adults alike. Great place to read your book on a bench or patch of grass or simply sit and enjoy the weather!
James H — Google review
Nice gardens albeit very steep which ain’t good in wet weather. Plenty of handrail on the stairs but not on the paths in the gardens. Suppose that could detract from the park but it’d make me feel more safe that I’m not gonna fall over. Paddling pool had no water in it in October hence it empty on my pics. Lovely autumn colours though!

St Robert's Cave is a secluded pilgrimage site that was once home to Saint Robert from 1180 to 1218. The cave, located near the ruins of a 12th-century hermitage, was inhabited by Robert Flower, who abandoned his life as the son of the Mayor of York to become a hermit. King John even visited him in 1216 and granted him land for feeding the poor.
Interested in history and the people that create it ,then this is for you. Tucked out of the way down steps cut into the ground lyes the cave cut into the rock . There is also an information board telling you the history of the person.
Carl P — Google review
I walked quite a long route from the river along Abbey Road, home to many, ms y very exclusive properties. Luckily I was using Google maps or I would have gone straight past the small opening in the wall as the plaque was partly obscured by a parked car. It’s a short but fairly precarious drop down to the cave accessed by rough steps-not suitable for buggies etc and sensible shoes required. There’s a statue plus a couple information points. The cave is small, very dark and has uneven surface so a torch is advised. Lots of interesting carvings into every surface.
Anne S — Google review
St Robert’s Cave in Knaresborough is a site of considerable historical and cultural significance, offering a rare glimpse into the life of the medieval hermit St Robert, who lived along the River Nidd in the early 13th century. The cave, carved into the cliffside and accompanied by the remnants of a small chapel, provides visitors with an engaging sense of place and context. Its location along the riverside path makes it an appealing stop for walkers interested in local heritage, spiritual history, or simply discovering one of the town’s more unusual landmarks. However, while the historical value of the site is undeniable, the current condition of the cave presents notable challenges for visitors. The interior frequently carries a strong smell of urine, a recurring issue that can detract from the experience and suggests a need for more active stewardship or protective measures. Additionally, the cave is often flooded, especially after periods of heavy rain or elevated river levels, which can restrict access and limit the ability to appreciate its architectural and historical features. These environmental and maintenance concerns are important for prospective visitors to be aware of in advance. Despite these drawbacks, St Robert’s Cave remains a compelling point of interest. Its rugged setting, layered history, and proximity to other scenic elements of the gorge continue to draw those who want to understand more about Knaresborough’s past. With improved conservation efforts, the site could better reflect its historical importance while offering a more comfortable and accessible experience. For now, it remains a place where the impact of time, environment, and human behaviour is evident, but its story is still worth exploring for those prepared for its present condition.
Sean P — Google review
Great place to visit. There is parking for about four cars at the top of the steps and an information board. Halfway down the steps is a statue, then at the bottom an information board of the layout of the cave and information about it. The cave itself is small and dark so take a headtorch! I spent about ten minutes exploring the cave and area around the outside of it, including looking at the river and weir which were near the cave!
Donna W — Google review
It's just a hole in the side of a cliff and some foundations, only visit if you are passing, visit the café over the other side of the river, amazing views down the valley and of the weir.
Miles F — Google review
Lovely walk to St Roberts Cave passing some stunning houses on the Riverside. The cave has an information board when you get to it and some information leaflets.Fascinating to think he lived in that cave for 30 years.

Worth a short stop for a look, as part of a walk round Knaresborough. A nice spot next to the river. The steps from the small road down to the cave are not long but can be a bit slippery and there's no handrail so beware.

Knaresborough Viaduct, a Grade II listed structure, is the star attraction of the charming town of Knaresborough in the Borough of Harrogate. This iconic viaduct, which has been in use since 1851, soars 80 meters above the River Nidd and is crossed by the railway line when traveling to Knaresborough by train. The town itself exudes quintessential English charm and offers picturesque scenery.
That was a spontaneous trip in the beautiful day. Wonderful little town, Knaresborough. Bridge looks amazing. Definitely recommend this place to visit.
Jolanta J — Google review
This town is famous for its bridges. There are three main bridges: the upper bridge, the lower bridge and the middle bridge. The most worth visiting is the middle bridge. There are many shops next to this bridge, and people will row boats on the river. After visiting the castle on the mountain, you can walk down the mountain road and enjoy the scenery along the way.
Zen C — Google review
This is a beautiful place with lots going on. The river and viaduct stand out but the castle is another lovely spot for enjoying scenic views. There was also an interesting artisan market going on at the castle when we visited. The town has lots of shops and cafes, the railway station is really charming and there’s a beautiful church next to the railway station too. Lots to see and you can spend a really pleasant afternoon here.
Jennifer K — Google review
The viaduct is gorgeous when viewed from the hill where the castle is located. There's a pud/restaurant along the river, so you can sit outdoors and enjoy the view. They also offer boats for rent. The only downside is that it's quite touristy here. If you don't mind that, then this is a nice place to visit.
Estela Z — Google review
This wonderful little town has an astonishing viaduct. So picturesque and gives you plenty of opportunity for getting some awesome photos. Its located on the River Nidd where railway line is crossing. The best view of this beautiful viaduct is from the castle ruins on top of hill. Viaduct is a delight to see. This Viaduct was opened in Oct 1851. Even during construction, it was collapsed but rebuilt again and its the most tourist attraction in Knaresborough. Plenty of shops, cafes and pubs around.

River Nidd, flowing through Knaresborough in North Yorkshire, is a picturesque spot known for its panoramic views of the railway viaduct, Mother Shiptons Cave and the Petrifying Well. The river offers opportunities for picnics and paddling during the summer months. Despite being affected by floods in 2015, it remains a charming location with a lovely riverside walk along Abbey Road leading to Knaresborough Viaduct.

We visited today Saturday 12th July for the riverside afternoon tea experience and had the most amazing day! The experience includes a reserved table and delicious afternoon tea, along with time on the boats. All the staff were so lovely and welcoming from the two lady’s serving our afternoon tea to the man who helped us to our boat. We went on the boat first and then relaxed in the sunshine on a perfect table right by the river to enjoy our afternoon tea and people watch. We would recommend you try this new experience we loved it! Thank you

While we were in Knaresborough, we visited the castle and museum and while strolling through the grounds (does that sound decedent or what !!!??) well anyway, while we were wandering around the castle grounds, we saw the viaduct that runs over the river Nidd. Looking over the trees and bushes we say boats on the water. Needless to say, we were down there toot sweet and found the Marigold Cafe & Boat hire. Did we sit and have a quick bite to eat in this picturesque setting, with the sun shining on the water ? Oh no, madam wanted on to the water instantly, ( happy wife, happy life) so we hired two boats, one for her and one for me …… ha ha ha …. Only joking, one for us and one for her sister and her man. Now it’s been a while since I’ve rowed a boat, and it took a minute or so to get my sea legs into gear, but when I did …. we were off !! That was until my chief helmsman ( or helmswoman ) steered the boat all over the place. From one side of the river to the other. It was like we were dodging mortar fire, that is until we hit another boat (fortunately it was tied) up, then into some trees then, we headed for the riverbank, then ….. well at that point we just ‘gave it a by’ and we headed for the dock. Even though my ‘helmsperson’ had us all over the place it was bloody good fun !! Once back at the dock and disembarked our vessel we made straight for the café. The rolls n sausages were delish, and the Mrs had a breakfast thing with granary stuff, the kind of thing you find at the bottom of a bird cage, along with Fromage Frais, honey and fruit … as you can tell she’s the healthy one. While we were sitting on the banks of the river drinking in all the beauty round about us ( and enjoying a lovely coffee ) we saw her sister and man coming back. They, fared better than us … lol ) People came and went, some took boats out others preferred to just sit and watch while enjoying a meal, or a tea and scone and let the world go by. It was a lovely day !! Not only was the food good, it was hot, and delicious, and the staff were a friendly bunch. Specifically, the chap that helped us on and off the boat, he must have the patience of a saint. Especially while we were watching ‘other people’ getting on and off the boats …. Very entertaining 🤣🤣🤣 The setting, the weather, the river, the people everything came together that day and it as fabulous. It goes without saying but, if you’re in Knaresborough you have to try the boats or at least get a coffee and watch other people ( like us) and have a laugh or just kick back and enjoy the moment.
Taistealaiche — Google review
Lovely setting on the riverside with views of the iconic bridge. Great honest food at reasonable prices. Had a brilliant Yorkshire breakfast with a decent coffee while watching the ducks and boats on the river.

Everything was okay, however we didn’t receive a very warm welcome. We were seated quickly. Order and pay at kitchen kiosk, then table service after that. The food was quick to be served. The food order for our table was a breakfast bun, a fish goujon bun, and spicy Malaysian sardines with sourdough - the sardines were great, however the sourdough was poor, more like a sliced crouton. We had all agreed that good bread can make a breakfast/lunch and had expected more. We arrived at 1150 and the soup was already sold out. The dining area was very loud, it wasn’t full but still hard to hear each other. There were no soft furnishings to absorb sound and every voice, chair movement or slight noise was amplified. Great location. A lovely walk to/from the cafe with views of the viaduct.

We had a wonderful time at the café in Knaresborough! The food was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent. Sara was so kind and friendly — she really made us feel welcome. Andy was also amazing; when my child accidentally broke a plate, he kindly refused to let us pay for it. Such genuine hospitality — thank you so much! Highly recommended 🌟

Lovely and friendly staff. Love them. Next to the river, the best place to have a cup of coffee to enjoy the view of the viaduct in Knaresborough. We love the coffee, it’s very smooth not strong exactly the coffee we like but be honest the Full English Breakfast is not recommended it’s totally a disaster. The bacon was totally overcooked it’s dead hard, the sausage was burned, we are very disappointed. Also a little bit embarrassed for us, because we have introduced this to our guests from China as the traditional English breakfast for the Brits. Obviously they are not impressed. After all, it’s a very nice place to go to have a cup of coffee or a cup of tea, but not that Full English breakfast.

Nidd Gorge, located near Knaresborough, offers a picturesque family-friendly woodland walk with stunning views of the winding River Nidd. The area features easily accessible paths, but be prepared for a steep climb if you venture to see the viaduct. It's an ideal spot for leisurely strolls through the woods and along the river, with various paths to explore.
Loverly walk and now the paths are getting repaired it’s a lot better to walk through now all the old board walks have gone. This Gorge is so different at all times of the years and weathers ! Great for a walk alone or a dog walk. Litter free so that’s a bonus too.

Nestled along the picturesque banks of the River Nidd, the Church of St John the Baptist stands as a remarkable Grade-listed monument that beautifully marries history and architecture. With roots tracing back to the 12th century, this stunning church showcases an impressive Perpendicular Gothic style, having undergone significant restoration during the Victorian era. Visitors are often captivated by its soaring arcades in the nave, supported by robust octagonal piers from the 15th century.
we visited the christmas tree festival today. lovely to see so many beautiful trees decorated by the local communities, organisations and companies in the church. great atmosphere and lovely friendly stewards welcome everyone. really worth a visit if you are in town

This is an absolutely stunning church - we were both surprised and impressed by its grandeur. It is clearly very well looked after and preserved. A lovely and peaceful space which we were glad to have discovered during our afternoon in Knaresborough.
Jennifer K — Google review
Beautiful large medieval church with rare stained glass by two of the best firms of the 19th century: Clayton and Bell (west window) and Burne-Jones (of Morris and Co). It is said that the original medieval scheme had a Saint Robert of Knaresborough narrative window. I wish I had a Time Machine just to be able to go back in time and see it! The volunteers working there were very welcoming and informative. A must see place in Knaresborough.
Naoki M — Google review
I parked on the road by the church (a clear kerb with no double yellow lines) assuming it was available for public parking, as there was no nearby signage indicating otherwise. When I returned to my car, I was shocked to find a large, adhesive warning sticker placed directly at eye level on my driver’s side window. The wording and presentation felt unnecessarily hostile. This was not an appropriate type of sticker for a vehicle — it left paper and glue residue, which meant I struggled to see properly out of my window and therefore to drive onwards safely. My dad later had to spend 30 minutes scrubbing it off. It’s very disappointing, as Knaresborough is such a friendly and welcoming place generally. However, this felt like an unnecessarily aggressive way to address the issue. A polite note under the windscreen wiper would have been far safer, and would have avoided causing damage to the car.

Beautiful church with wonderful stained glass windows. Surrounded by a park and tucked away behind the busy main street.
Heloise — Google review
Grade 1 listed church, it's the largest church in Knaresborough. Dates mostly to the 15th century, but also has elements of 12th century structure. Church restored in 1878. There is a Norman chapel, a late medieval font in ornate Gothic style, some of the beautiful stained glass windows are from the William Morris studio. Worth a visit.

This is an absolute jem. Wonderful feeling inside and stunning stained glass windows. St John the Baptist Church is a parish church in the Church of England located in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. It is the largest church in the town. Records of a church on this site date back to at least 1114 when records from Nostell Priory, Wakefield show that King Henry I granted the "Church at Cnaresburgh" to the canons at Nostell. The church was originally dedicated to St Mary but was changed to its current name in the 16th century following reform after the English reformation. The bells were hung in 1774 and the clock erected in 1884.

Gift shop
Ye Oldest Chymist Shoppe in England, located on Knaresboroughs Market Place, is a historic gem marked with an official blue plaque. Records indicate that John Beckwith operated a chemist shop here in 1720, but it's believed to be much older. The shop boasts apothecary jars dating back to the 17th century and offers an array of goods including handmade chocolates, teas, gift sets, sweets, and more.
We stopped in here after exiting the Tea Room for lunch. The shop is a wonderful place, full of bits and bobs and tons of goodies! The prices were vary reasonable and the amount of stock was incredible! There is a handmade chocolate counter to boot, aswell as a swathe of anything you could ever think you needed. Tea, gift sets, knock blacks, sweets, this really is a one stop shop, but laid out in a way that's not overwhelming. Truely a piece of stunning history.

Great lunch, no problems serving us just 20 minutes before the kitchen closed. Very friendly. Food was great, especially the hand cut chips. Coffee really good. No-one left disappointed and they even opened back up and hour later after closing to let my son back in to collect something he'd dropped while eating, and were even still friendly about it!!
Nick J — Google review
We stopped by less than an hour before closing and asked the staff if it would be possible to get some drinks and cakes or snacks as we were mindful of closing time but it wasn't a problem for them. As the weather was nice we sat outside- there are some picknic tables with benches. There are plenty of tables inside in case if the weather is temperimental. We ordered iced mocha with coconut milk, mocha, scallywag and sticky toffee pudding. The food was served promptly. The staff make sure about the milk in the iced coffee. The scallywag was served warmed up which was very nice. And sticky toffee pudding was absolutely lovely! We shared our treats with a gang of greedy wasps who happily were bathing in warm toffee. The place offers cold and hot drinks, snacks, lunch meals, ice cream, cakes and more. They also offer afternoon tea. The staff was very helpful, friendly and welcoming. We really liked the good quality coffee and desserts. Definitely worth a stop if you're nearby. The tables outside are located on the back of car park and spaces for coaches so it may be a bit noisy.

Great location, next to river walk, with large public carpark…a perfect spot to start or finish your exploring in Knaresborough… Rather a long wait for our order to be taken and get served, as they seemed to be quite short staffed…. but the food was lovely and the staff pleasant … We had Afternoon Tea, the sandwiches were freshly made, as were the many delicious desserts.

A delightful small venue that needs more publicity - barely visible on the high street with no posters or lights. There was a great stand up comedian, Robin Morgan, there on Saturday night and less than 30 in the audience. Bravo Robin! Disgrace on the managers of this theatre!

Cute and cosy local theater. Lovely venue.
Elena L — Google review
The Frazer theatre is a local institution that is probably one of Knaresborough's best kept secrets. Unassuming and hidden behind a Tesco and a curry house, you only know its there if you have been. But once you have been you don't forget it, a small theatre of 130ish seats puts on regular comedy nights, local events and other forms of entertainment like tribute bands and shows. The local pantomime by the Knaresborough players is always a good laugh to see in January. The staff are committed, hardworking and always helpful, and while I'm sure it's tempting to sneak in your own booze for the performance, buying from the small but well stocked bar in the foyer shows your support for a venue that would be missed if lost. Always entertainment never boring! I love the Frazer theatre. Long live the the Frazer Theatre.

Spectacular nature area for an amazing walk. Fields full of yellow wild flowers at one side and bluebells covered a big forest area. River flows next to it. Lovely paths going here and there to let you discover more of this area. Beautiful birds sound. Simply love Nidd Gorge. The woodland is beautiful, well managed and with helpful steps and boardwalks for when it gets wet and muddy. Lots of wildlife, birds and wildflowers. There was a tiny sandy beach area perfect for a picnic. There’s free car park to enjoy Nidd Gorge area. Worth all to visit Nidd Gorge if you’re in Knaresborough.

Very handy free car park for the stunning Nidd Gorge. The woodland is beautiful, well managed and with helpful steps and boardwalks for when it gets wet and muddy. Lots of wildlife, birds and wildflowers. The only down side is no toilets at the car park. To be fair, there's not much space to work with so it'd be tricky to put any in.

Nidd Gorge is lovely for a walk around, various paths both side of the river. The car parking is limited but people come and go. Only thing that spoils it for me is so many dogs off lead, especially when walking with my young son who doesn’t like dogs. It would be nice to enjoy the place without dogs running at us.

Six Poor Folk is a charming bar, cafe, and bistro housed in one of the town's oldest buildings dating back to 1480. It offers a great selection of local beers, wines, and cocktails and is dog-friendly. The venue is perfect for enjoying drinks during the summer months when the town hosts events like the Knaresborough Bed Race. With seating options indoors and outdoors, including a heated and partially covered area, it provides a lovely space with a great ambiance.
First Visit to Knaresborough – A Summer Surprise at Six Poor Folk It was my first time visiting Knaresborough, and a heatwave had just arrived. The sun was blazing, and we were desperate to find somewhere indoors for lunch — and to cool off. That’s how we ended up at Six Poor Folk. The interior felt like a cosy little cottage, with huge floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out onto the charming street scene outside. There’s even an upstairs seating area. The whole place felt clean, tidy, and inviting. We were greeted by a lovely waitress with beautiful long hair — friendly and chatty — who brought us chilled water with lemon slices to help us cool down. Such a thoughtful touch. There were two of us, and we ordered the Fish Butty with hand-cut chips and the Buffalo Chicken. The presentation was elegant and the flavours didn’t disappoint. The haddock in the Fish Butty was perfectly cooked, paired with fresh and crispy baby gem lettuce — absolutely delicious. The Buffalo Chicken came with a green sauce that was both unique and flavourful, adding an interesting twist to the dish. But the biggest surprise? The ladies’ toilet. It was spotless — honestly one of the cleanest I’ve ever come across — and stocked with thoughtful extras like feminine products. A small detail, but it left a big impression. All in all, Six Poor Folk offered not just a lovely meal but also a truly welcoming and comfortable experience. Would definitely return!

A lovely bar where Casta and Jorvic made new friends. The building occupants once cared for up to six poor folk but no Flat Eric's. A choice of 4 real ales. I ticked off another brewery with my first ever pint from Amity Brew Co, A West Yorkshire brewery. In the 2025 CAMRA Good Beer Guide and also has a Cask Marque. An upstair room and rear beer garden. Food looks good. My better half loves this bar, as do I.

The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with a buzzing crowd and a view that’s absolutely stunning—right on the riverside, perfect for soaking in the beauty of the area. Now let’s talk about the real star: the chicken nuggets. I know it sounds simple, but these were hands down some of the best I’ve ever had—crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I wasn’t expecting to be wowed by pub nuggets, but here we are. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and want a fun spot with great food and a killer view!

Went on a Saturday around 3pm and it was super busy. But the queue moved quickly and our food came quickly. We got scampi and chips with mushy peas which was great (a tad pricey but it was a big portion). A little girl got stung by a wasp next to us and a waitress brought her some ice/was very attentive! We did have random people coming and sitting on the spare seats at our table (they didn’t speak to us at all, just sat themselves down) which we found odd but not really the pub’s fault. Overall would recommend, maybe during the week when it’s a bit quieter!

Absolutely beautiful pub and beer garden and you offer Erdinger on tap! We grabbed a good spot in the beer garden and had a drink each in the sun, the location is very nice too near the river. My only gripe and I won't drop a star for this but the menu looked a little plain and boring, a little too traditional. We we're ready to eat something more small plates to share etc from the menu but honestly there wasn't anything very appealing. It looked catered for full on sit down meals. I hope this makes sense. I would absolutely return for drinks though.

Dropped in with the family earlier today, five of us. The cafe was busy so we had to wait around a bit for a table to free up, no issue, that’s expected at all Waterside cafes on sunny days. I grabbed some menus myself as the staff were clearly rushed off their feet. Asked one member of staff if they could clear the previous table occupants' plates and cups etc., which they did straight away. Had to ask someone else to wipe the table down afterwards, kinda thought that might have been done as part of the same job, but not a big deal. You order food at the counter, all straightforward. The young lady who served us was friendly, helpful, and polite, all good. Drinks came out after about 20 minutes, food followed about 15 minutes later. I had the full English, well cooked, nicely presented, and I polished off the lot. Everyone else had different dishes and all were happy, no complaints at all, everything was tasty and cooked well. It's a busy place on a sunny weekend, with decent food. We've been a few times before and we will be back again.

I will start by saying that the biscoff cheesecake is very nice and the waitresses are extremely kind. However, I do not know how they deal with the manager. First of all, she told me that I'd have to move my chair if someone sat on the table next to us when there was plenty of room between the tables. Secondly, there was one waitress that she made sit on a table while cleaning the cutlery. This created a very loud atmosphere and not a relaxing one that I imagined a Riverside Cafe to be. Thirdly, she was horrible to the waitresses and even said that they shouldn't be standing in the kitchen as it looked like favouritism. If there is nothing to do then where else do you expect them to go. Lastly, when someone did come and sit on the table next to us, she made me move my chair even though I had it pulled in as far as I could. She was very rude and made it seem like my fault that there wasn't enough room. In my opinion, there was enough room as other tables were that close together. It was only because the person sat behind me had their chair out really far that there wasn't enough room so why should I have to move. These things really ruined the experience for me. I feel sorry for the waitresses.

We had a great experience here the staff are so friendly! We asked if they did iced lattes before doing the Knaresborough park run, and on our return they remembered our order which was lovely! Highly recommend this lovely cafe!!
Amelia T — Google review
Been here had the experience I could not recommend this cafe to buy ice cream from as the portions are quite small in the tubs and very little value for money and it's overrated. Customer service is okay as with everything could improve over time. As long as they are busy the feeling I got and I felt the value for money goes out of the window with customer service. Please go and try and see for yourself for me its not worth a second visit.

What a fantastic little cafe. Al fresco seating, and if you prefer inside seating. We had the tea for two, beacon roll, cheese 🧀 and ham toastie with a portion of fries on the side very tasty. Staff were welcoming, friendly, helpful and polite. Good quick service in beautiful surroundings.

Located at 1 Abbey Road, HG5 8HY, The Half Moon Free House is a popular riverside establishment offering a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. With original bare brick walls and a real fire, it exudes a cozy vibe during the winter months. The pub serves cask ales, fine wines, international lagers, beers and spirits.
Another lovely evening for us at The Half Moon, the food is absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The coffee here is so good and the salted caramel and pecan brownie is to die for !!Tom and his team are so friendly and welcoming. This is one of our favourite places whether we come as a couple, bring our dogs or our friends we always enjoy our visits.

When I was here, I got the impression that this is most definitely a "foodie" pub. Yet, although I only came for a pint or two, I wasn't made to feel pressured into food, nor shamed for taking up a table. (the food looked great by the way). Speaking of the pint, they had four Real Ales on, one of which was Goose Eye Over & Stout, which was truly excellent. The staff were so friendly and the atmosphere so relaxed, I could have stayed there all night. Strongly recommended. If you are in Knaresborough, put The Half Moon on your "must do" list.

Well worth the walk from town to this pub set in a stunning location by the river and only a 12 minute river walk to the 🚂 station although there are 80-odd steps to climb along the way. 4 cask ales available along with a large wine selection plus hot beverages.

Came here with my friend as we were hungry after all day exploring. She ordered cheese platter with bread, butter, and different cheeses and grapes. I was a tad disappointed as found out there weren’t any pizzas served on that day but I had a delicious soup instead ;) The bar staff was very nice and a place is welcoming with a nice atmosphere.

Cosy and friendly pub! Good meat and cheese platters, and the pizzas are fabulous. Beer choices change depending on what's good, but there are a few staples if you're not a confident beer trier. Wines are pretty good too!

Blind Jacks is a traditional pub located in a Georgian listed building with a cozy atmosphere. It has been featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for over 30 years and offers a wide selection of craft beers and real ales. The pub is known for its small but welcoming space, with seating available both downstairs and upstairs, making it popular among locals and tourists alike. The establishment also features a statue of John Metcalf, also known as Blind Jack, outside in the market square.
Lovely old fashioned pub with an excellent selection of real ales. Friendly and helpful staff. Dog friendly. It was pretty busy on a Thursday evening. Not surprised as it was a lovely place. Everything you could possibly want in a lovely old pub and more. Loved it here.

Blind Jacks is a very traditional pub right in the heart of Knaresborough. Its simple pub without any mess mean no food, music or anything. Its just the customers who are creating the original atmosphere. Its arranged over a number of rooms in a three storey building and providing you plenty of space. Great selection of beers and a friendly, welcoming vibes.

Highly recommended as a beer lover's choice, this little gem did not disappoint. Small, but opens out once inside, this is a popular pub in the centre of town. Seating downstairs and upstairs, overlooking the tourists and townsfolk alike. Busy but not overcrowded on a hot Saturday afternoon. Brilliant chats with fellow customers. Friendly staff. "Blind Jack" even has a bronze likeness sitting on a bench, outside in the square.

A splendid real ale pub on the market square. Named after a local legend. Casta and Jorvic told me that it is a CAMRA Good Beer Guide entry for 2025. Easy to see why. The very " Red" interior is splendid. I had a Castle Rock brewery 3.8% Pale. Very good. A two roomed pub downstairs with some front seating on the market place. Also 2 room upstairs space as well. Also toilets up here. More upmarket than the one on the ground floor.
MADDOGLEP — Google review
Best pub in Knaresborough. No arguments. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a wonderful selection of beers. A gem of a pub.
Clif A — Google review
As a visitor from Scotland, here is a my review of Blind Jack's in Knaresborough, a pub that feels both familiar and refreshingly different. Blind Jack's is the kind of pub that instantly puts a smile on your face. Stepping in from the bustling market square, you're greeted by an atmosphere that feels both ancient and alive. For a Scot, it's a bit like finding a proper old boozer in Glasgow or Edinburgh—all bare brick, dark wood, and a genuine, unpretentious vibe. Plus we were staying in the apartments next door, so not far to stagger back to bed. The first thing I noticed is the "no food, no music" policy. This isn't a place for a quiet meal; it's a place for a good blether. The air is filled with the low hum of conversation and the clinking of glasses. It feels like a throwback in the best possible way, where the main event is the company and the excellent beer. And the beer... ah, the beer. Blind Jack's is a true alehouse, and they take their craft seriously. The selection is fantastic, with a rotating list of cask and keg beers, often featuring brilliant local Yorkshire brews. It's a real treat to explore a different region's beer scene, and you'll find plenty to satisfy a Scottish palate accustomed to good ale. They also have an impressive gin menu and a great selection of other spirits, but sadly no Glayva or Drambuie however there's something for everyone. The pub itself is a warren of little rooms spread across a few floors. You can find a cozy nook downstairs or venture up the steep, dog-legged staircase to the upstairs rooms. Each space has its own character, with vintage posters and quirky decor, including a room dedicated to the Holland-America shipping line for some reason! One of the most charming things about Blind Jack's is its namesake, John "Blind Jack" Metcalf, a legendary 18th-century road builder from the area. We read all about him when we visited the castle and museum. There's a life-size drawing of him on the stairway wall, and a bronze likeness of him on a bench outside in the square. It's a lovely touch that connects the pub to the town's history. As a visitor from Scotland, Blind Jack's feels like a home away from home, but with a unique Yorkshire flavour. It's a testament to the fact that a great pub doesn't need fancy bells and whistles—it just needs good beer, a friendly atmosphere, and a story to tell. If you're in Knaresborough and you fancy a proper pint, this is the place to be. You'll leave feeling like you've had a truly authentic experience and maybe, just maybe, you'll be tempted to move down here, we’re thinking about it, and if not we’re definitely visiting again !!

Jacob Smith Park, located in the northern part of Knaresborough, has been open to the public since 2008. The park spans 20 acres and is surrounded by a stone wall, featuring ancient trees as well as over 200 newly planted ones. It was bequeathed by Miss Winifred Jacob Smith and her sister, who inherited the land from their father.
Great, wild open space with lots of interesting trees and wild plants. Can get a bit muddy in places, but for those of us with dogs, there's a very handy bin at the only entrance so you can't miss it, and it's completely enclosed so very tricky for the pups to escape if they do like to roam a bit.

Blenkhorn's Boat Hire in Knaresborough offers wooden rowing boats for rent from mid-March to late October. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely paddle down the River Nidd, taking in views of the viaduct, riverside, and local wildlife. While prices have increased over time, the experience is worth it for families looking to create fun memories on the water. It's recommended to arrive early to avoid long queues and receive quick guidance before setting off on the boat.
A must do if you visit Knaresborough, the price was £10 per person and children under 5 go free. You rent the boat for an hour and enjoy the most amazing view. Staff were really helpful and you get used to row yourself quite fast.
Doruntina K — Google review
Hire a boat if you’re here with your friends or family in spring/summer time! The flowers, the trees, the weather, the ducks, everything seems to be in sync. Was £10 per person per hour, felt a little too expensive though. The people were lovely helping us in and out of the boat. Just that we wish we had more time. We were there just a few mins before 5pm and they called us back before even 5:45-5:50.
Lakshmi N — Google review
Great place to rent a boat and have fun. Kind and helpful staff who will learn you a few tricks of the ‘rowing’ trade. Scenery is outstanding so close to the famous viaduct.
Hans R — Google review
Definitely a fun thing to do! Prices have gone up considerably within a short amount of time - from £7 to £10 between my last two visits, but kinda to be expected with the ever rising cost of living. It is worth it though if it's just for an experience. Done it a few times with family and makes some fun memories with remembering how to row and steer and avoiding other boats. Pretty views, too, especially in summer, of course - and duckies!! Would recommend to people visiting Knaresborough to give it a go 😇

Bettys Café Tea Rooms is a renowned and iconic establishment in Harrogate, Yorkshire, dating back to 1919. It has become a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike. The tearoom offers both formal afternoon teas and casual dining with a British menu. Visitors can expect an elegant setting with silver cake stands, fine china, and staff dressed in period costumes.
Our friend who lived in Harrogate for years suggested we go to Betty's for tea and it didn't disappoint! There was a line outside but it moved quite fast and we were seated within ten minutes. I got the club sandwich and my husband got the afternoon tea. Everything was yummy and looked fantastic! The service was stellar and the decor was very nice inside. We really enjoyed the afternoon there! I would highly recommend it.
Monica B — Google review
Bettys afternoon tea was a delight. Been recommended by many people in the Harrogate area, so I took the wife. She absolutely loved it. She had the raspberry tea and me, the coffee. Sandwiches were good, scones were great, make sure you ask for more clotted cream and jam, you don’t have to pay extra, the cakes were delightful. Could do with a couple more though 😋 Unsure if extras, like additional cakes and sandwiches are free, some people around were getting additional, we were offered an additional sandwich which we took and it was not added to the bill, which was a nice surprise. Stunning tea room, clean decor. Love pianist playing in the corner of he room is a beautiful touch. Service was great, very attentive. Lena looked after us well. Overall, a highly recommended experience if you’re in the area. You can book online or queue up outside in the huge queue that is there daily!
Craig B — Google review
We were blown away by the friendly customer service, all the staff were superb especially Karen who popped back to our table to ask if we wanted any more sandwiches cakes or tea, which were all delicious. We didn't feel rushed at all, seated in the Imperial room we had already booked ahead. The rooms decor was extremely beautiful and the piano playing created an unique background to this special occasion.
Paula T — Google review
My wife having ordered online previously and seen the shop when last in Harrogate over 3 years ago had suggested we go in. Whilst an orderly queue was formed outside, we patiently waited for about 5 - 10 mins. Inside we were seated and served by attentive and professional staff. Ok, so we only had sandwiches, hot chocolate and gooey fat rascals - they were by far some of the nicest we have had.
Michael L — Google review
A must visit when you are in Harrogate even if you need to queue. The wait is not long. Betty's has a very cosy ambience. The menu is extensive and makes you want to try many dishes. We decided on the English breakfast including the vegan option. Accompanied by a pot each of Betty's tea blend and Breakfast tea. The desserts were yummy too (Engadine Torte and the Fruit Tart).
Huisze S — Google review
great service from our waiters james and karen, with great food and a lovely relaxing atmosphere! very knowledgeable about recommending teas as well. we went for afternoon tea and one of our party didn’t eat pork, so they made a seperate lunch with more sandwiches to replace the pork ones.
Daniella — Google review
Queued around 20 mins to get in. Queue combers bring menus and a few little tasters from the shop which was nice. We got in and were given a table right in the window with peoples bottoms for eyes on us at all times. Maybe some privacy screening might be an idea. We were quite uncomfortable but staff were unable to help. The food and drink was nice, no complaints about quality and the price isn’t too bad considering. Staff are professional but rushed off their feet. Can’t help feeling they have jammed as many tables in as physically possible and you’re really paying for the name of Betty’s. The prices in the shop were extortionate. Won’t be rushing back. The location js ideal though with parking nearby and lots to do locally.
Lauren G — Google review
Thank you, Nema, for making my partner's Sunday breakfast birthday celebration so special. Betty's is a must-visit; I was initially unsure if it was worth it, but I'm glad I trusted the positive reviews and decided to go. The Christmas coffee, Christmas tea, and Rascal scones were fantastic! The store itself is definitely worth a visit. I personally wouldn’t enjoy sitting in the underground room, so I recommend waiting a bit longer to sit upstairs and enjoy the beautiful streets of Harrogate through the lovely view.

It recaptures Harrogate's spa heritage by using natural spring waters from the grounds at Rudding Park.
We recently received a voucher for an evening visit to the spa followed by dinner. It was our first time at the spa, and we were incredibly impressed. There were so many different experiences to enjoy, including the sauna, steam room, foot spa, light therapy room, and oxygen room. We also loved the jacuzzi pool, the ice bath, and the beautiful infinity-style pool. The spa had a calm and peaceful atmosphere, and it never felt overcrowded, which made the whole experience even more relaxing. It’s inspired us to make spa visits a regular Sunday tradition to help us unwind and reset for the week ahead!

Our room was absolutely stunning with lovely views of the grounds/gardens and spa and a lovely night's sleep- I was blown away by the place.

Really sad to say I was so disappointed with my pedicure today and would not normally write a review based just on that as we are regular visitors of the spa, however today we were over priced by £149 which was corrected by a refund (luckily we double checked the invoice at the end-which we have never had to do)! To come home and find that my feet are just as dry after the treatment as they were prior to the treatment and that the nail colouring has no shine to it after paying £67 is really really disappointing particularly as I would have expected a 5* treatment at that price and at a spa such as Rudding Park. I would always recommend the facilities, and the staff are lovely but would never ever have another treatment other than a massage again and would not recommend for anyone else either.

Had a wonderful spa day at Rudding Park. The facilities were spotlessly clean and really well maintained, and all the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We tried the mud rasul experience which was a real highlight. The products smelt amazing and left our skin feeling incredibly soft afterwards. A lovely, relaxing experience - highly recommend!

Had the most amazing spa morning with brunch and a treatment. I've recommended here to everyone. The staff are very attentive and lovely. My deep tissue massage was just what I needed. The food was lovely. The facilities are the best I've seen so far in a spa. I'll be returning! Thank you!

Just returned from celebrating our wedding anniversary and my wife’s birthday. This is our 7 th stay at Rudding park and I can honestly say it’s the best spa hotel, the staff, the food are unbelievable. Staff very polite and nothing is too much trouble. Looking forward to next year already.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely wonderful spa evening at Rudding Park! We visited for a spa evening package to celebrate our 10-year anniversary and a birthday, and it was the perfect treat. The package included £45pp towards food, which made it excellent value — the meal was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. The highlight for me was the ‘Touch Facial’ treatment with Laura — she was fantastic! My skin was glowing afterwards, the best it’s ever felt, and she gave brilliant recommendations for Elemis products to build a proper nighttime skincare routine. I really appreciated how knowledgeable and friendly she was. The whole evening felt relaxing, luxurious, and great value for money. Highly recommend Rudding Park Spa for a special occasion, a couples’ treat, or just some well-deserved pampering!
Suzanna B — Google review
Our recent stay at Rudding Park was unfortunately disappointing. When we checked in, I booked a treatment with reception and even asked the receptionist to confirm it with the spa. However, when we arrived for the appointment, we were told nothing had been booked. This was very frustrating and left us feeling let down, especially as we had planned our day around it. We dined at Horto Restaurant. While the setting was lovely, the service fell short — our main meal took over an hour to arrive, and no one came to explain the delay. I eventually had to ask where our food was, which took away from what should have been a relaxing experience. To make matters worse, when checking out we noticed we had been charged £80 for a meal we never had. This was added to our room bill incorrectly, so I would advise anyone staying here to carefully check their invoice before paying. The rooftop spa itself was very nice, but these repeated issues overshadowed our stay. It also felt at times that not all guests were treated equally by the staff, which was disappointing given the reputation and price point of Rudding Park. Overall, while the spa facilities are good, the organisation, service, and attention to detail were not what I expected from a hotel of this standard.

This is a very interesting place with various activities for people with learning difficulties. The cafe gave us a very nice, generous and tasty afternoon tea. We only expected a cream tea, but we got an afternoon tea with savoury snacks, sandwiches, lovely cakes, and scones with jam and cream along with plentiful coffee and tea. The staff really did themselves proud. Thank you very much to them! ❤️

Superb facility. Popped into the cafe to buy a drink and had a look around the beautiful grounds with mosaic sculptures. They also sell lovely hand made wooden benches and other garden items.

Henshaw’s in Knaresborough is a wonderful place. It is run for adults with disabilities of all sorts and consists of lovely workshops & nice teachers. Obviously the classes are private although the centre does run art courses for the public. The workshops make & sell crafts & jewellery & there’s the lovely sound of people making music on the site when you visit during the week. The entire site is beautiful and inspiring. There’s a cafe for hot & cold drinks & snacks which is open to the public, with inside & outside seating, there are gardens for the public to take a stroll in which includes a woodland walk with lovely sculptures & seats! The greenhouses grow & sell a wide variety of plants. Well worth a visit. It has a carpark & is close to bus stops just a few stops from K’boro bus station up the hill in town, it’s also within walking distance from the town centre (15 mins) and the route past St John’s Church is a quieter & prettier alternative to along the main road. It’s well worth looking at their website as they have a programme of events for the public. It’s a great place.

We enjoyed watching all the different craft activities and chatting with the visitors. Thank you for a memorable day.

What a shame that this organisation is using an unprofessional and heavy handed company to enforce scandalous £100 "parking charges" to hardworking people - for briefly being in an otherwise completely empty car park on a Sunday. "Minster Baywatch" don't even send their notices out with enough time to take advantage of their discounted rate. SHAME ON YOU!

I love Nidd Gorge. It's so beautiful. Great for birdwatching and Kingfisher spotting too. I've rated it moderate as in places the hills are steep and rocky and it can be slippery when wet. The hill climb out of either end is challenging. It's great for just about anything, my only narky is bikes. They aren't supposed to be in there!

A really lovely store and it's great to learn about the benefits of beeswax as you browse! The candles are of a really good quality - little did I know these little things help with allergies, something I've struggled with for years! Looking forward to visiting again in future!

We visited Knaresborough in April and stumbled on this little gem of a shop. My Partner purchased a jar of Organic Beeswax Body Butter. I have had psoriasis on my elbows for 15 years and the prescribed creams had minimum effect. My friend applied some of the beeswax butter to my elbows and within 24 hours the redness had gone away. After 3 days the dryness had gone. This is a game changer for me and the bonus is I’m no longer putting petro chemicals on my skin.

Beautiful candles and a great service! Thank you to Michael and the team for making these lovely candles and for your exceptional service. Your beeswax candles give off a beautiful, ambient glow. The light and the smell is so much better than paraffin or soy, and I find myself appreciating them so much more than conventional candles. I bought pillar candles for me, and little bags of beehive candles for Christmas gifts. Can’t wait for my friends and family to benefit from beeswax! Thanks again, have a lovely Christmas and all the best for 2025! Helen x

We visited Knaresborough today for the first time to visit the market, the market was fantastic but not as good as the local shops, we found a lovely little courtyard with a number of shops including the Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Company, the lovely lady behind the counter was quick to offer us free samples of the local honey they have for sale, I very easily and quickly spent over £70 on a selection of Honeys, Lip balm, Car diffuser and other bits, the shop is just fantastic, its decor is amazing, the shop displays are perfect the merchandising made perfect sense, and the store smelled absolutely amazing, however I may not have spent a penny if it was not for the lady serving me, so helpful and friendly just what you want a big smile when on holiday and walking into a store to possibly make a purchase, and the honey is absolutely out of this world, it is unlike any other honey I have ever tasted, if you are close by definitely take the time to visit and you will understand why I love this store so much.

Always have a fab time at Painting Pots. Laura and her team are absolutly brilliant. Nothing is too much. We recently didn't have time to paint all we wanted due to children being children, so we took our plate and bauble away to the caravan for the weekend and had a lovely relaxed painting hour or 2 with a glass of wine while the children slept. I'd highly recommend it. (if I knew how to add pics I would 😂)

Such a wonderful experience. Laura made is feel so welcome, we had a lovely chat and she helped us out with everything we needed. Lovely view of castle and customers were friendly. Had all the supplies and colours needed to create what was inside my fruitful mind and wasn't short on inspiration. Anything we needed even the simplest task such as changing our water Laura was happy to provide. I would definitely visit again if I was local and will be returning if ever in the area again as it was the best part of our day! As we aren't local Laura is going to mail our creations to us back home. Honestly if I could give 6 stars I would. Xx

Beautiful scenery... Felt like I had stepped into a set from Lord of the Rings. Stunning paths wind their way between majestic rocks. Peaceful when I visited, and could be a wonderful adventure for children. The lady on the entrance was incredibly helpful and very welcoming. I got the entry included as part of Historic House membership, which I would recommend for anyone interested in historic properties and gardens.

One of the prettiest places I’ve ever been, completely unexpected and well worth travelling to, easy to get to and only £5 entry is a bargain! Lovely lady who greeted us too.
Danielle C — Google review
I wasn't quite sure what to expect as I navigated a sharp bend into the ample car parking at this site. A friendly welcome from the lady taking the more than reasonable fees Historic Hous memberships get free admission) and then a wander round the lake in a clockwise direction. Younare deliberately guided in this direction. Fairly recent restorations of woodland and a historic Turner view greeted me, and you could ooh and aah at the rock formations on the far shore. A quick amble round the lake on a pleasant walk then the proper journey began, with the contorted trees clinging to the rocks, roots anchoring them and adding to a Lord of the Rings type scene. Rocks in all directions, smoothed by time and simply massive, with wide bowls of woodland kissed by the sun with dappled sun glaring through. I was stunned. Some of the reviews seem to have missed the point that a private landowner has bothered to restore a woodland, part of heritage so easily lost, and open it for people.to see.... I for one was immensely impressed at what has been done. Some of the trees are just so majestic and how on earth they thrive in this area is part of the joy of visiting. Lovely to see a mix of young and old enjoying what is a one to two hour visit to enjoy and absorb the woods and the rocks. What a pity I can't leave a sixth star...

Such a beautiful place for a picnic, this natural nature reserve is a wonderful beautiful spot which it great for children and big children to explore. It's great to see no litter about or any poo bags. The only thing that lets it down is the £5 per adult, it's too expensive. It should be £5 per car really as it's just a walk. I also wish the lake was in use and you could hire small boats out or even i could just paddle board on there. Now that would be worth £6 per adult :)

Having National Trust and English Heritage cards we are always a bit loathe to go somewhere we have to pay but this was well worth the money. Only £7.50 which includes a free cuppa and biscuits. This place was an absolutely beautiful restoration job. A testament to the skills that still remain in the world. We spent a good two hours there. The staff are lovely. Only open on a Tuesday from 10-1 or a guided tour at 2. And it looks like an amazing wedding venue.

Not in the actual Stately home, although a wedding was taking place on the Sunday and I saw the bride posing for fotos on the garden steps. I was in the parkland that encircled the wonderful building with other members of the North Yorkshire Driving Club. We had a great weekend and the weather favoured us most of the time.

☕ The guided building tour begins with coffee and biscuits, a welcome bit of fortification before embarking on a captivating journey that stretches over two hours. The tour delves into the lives of past residents, weaving together stories of grandeur and decline. Once a proud home, the property eventually fell into disrepair—until Dr. Rolph stepped in. In 1983, he purchased the building and began a painstaking restoration, returning it to its former glory not once, but twice—after a devastating fire threatened to erase his efforts. Highly recommend, but do book in advance.

I just had to show my fiance this absolutely breathtakingly stunning Gothic castle that I visited as a child. My mother was actually a resident here as a child when it was a children's home many years ago. Unfortunately, we couldn't look around inside as it was closed, but I hope to return to have a proper look sometime. My absolute dream would be to get married here, but I think it would be a little too pricey for us.
Sarah S — Google review
Absolutely incredible experience! The castle itself is breathtaking, but what truly amazed me was the trust—we were left completely free to explore, with every room open for us to use during our photoshoot. It felt so unique and special, unlike any other castle I’ve visited. Everything was spotless, warm, and so well cared for. The gardens were like something out of a fairytale—lush green grass and perfectly kept grounds. This photoshoot was unforgettable, and I’ll always remember how magical it felt.

Set inside an historic building it had lots of good information about things to do in the local area..

Very rude lady on reception. I made it to the top of the steps where she was chatting on the phone as I just entered the doorway she covered her handset and said we don’t allow dogs. To which I replied some signage may help informing people to this. Another couple coming out also noticed this and commented she’s a bit rude and also said there’s no notice anywhere. 😡

The studio also provides Wheel Experiences, Wheel Nights, and multi-week Wheel Courses for those interested in creating pottery.
we were welcomed into Bish Bash Pot for our Brides Hen Do this bank holiday weekend. Staff were amazing. We had Access to our own space where we could play music, drink bubbles and have snacks all whilst painting away. We had a great time. Thank you all so much!

We booked as a group of 14 for a hen party on a Saturday and had a brilliant time. We had our own space in the back which were not expecting and it was lovely, it was set out with lots of thought, with candles, our Prosecco (we provided) on ice, Bluetooth speaker etc. we also had a member of staff close by should we need her who was really helpful and friendly. It was a mixed age group with some unsure about trying, however everyone has said what a great time they had. Thank you.

I did one of the 9 week wheel courses. It was absolutely fantastic, the staff were lovely (particularly thank you to Caroline) and really helpful. The studio is a lovely environment. I surprised myself with how many pots I managed to make; despite being a complete beginner I was able to come away with some nice things!
Poppy J — Google review
Attended for a 2 hour wheel experience as a surprise for my Mum on Mother’s Day. My Mum is obsessed with the pottery throw down and has been saying for ages how she’d love to have a go and using a potter’s wheel herself. I could not have hoped for anything better. Caroline was an absolute marvel, she was a pleasure to watch and learn from and so patient with our many (very basic) questions. It was such a relaxed atmosphere, I felt we had the freedom to be creative and learn independently without being left to fend for ourselves at any point. It was a really friendly place to just have a go, when I had been really nervous about it being an elitist or ‘experts only’ environment. Our pots were by no means masterpieces, but we were so proud of what we achieved. 10/10 I would recommend this to anyone and will definitely come again.

My wonderful friends arranged a paint-a-pot session as part of my hen weekend celebrations, and what a fabulous time we had! We were so well looked after, in a gorgeous room with flowers and twinkly lights...lots of choice of pots and lots of support and advice as we painted. It was so relaxing, fun and friendly. Would definitely recommend ❤️thank you!

Really lovely little studio, relaxed atmosphere, loads of things to choose from to paint. They even let me bring my dogs and set up a little blanket and water bowl for them ❤️ thank you!

Absolutely incredible service! My daughter and I turned up on Saturday morning without a booking and understandably it was full, but Angela went over and above to sort out a space for us. She made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend and we cannot wait to come back to have my daughter's birthday party there. Thank you so much Angela! x

If you love antiques and especially architectural pieces and visiting Knaresborough or even if you're not, Chris' place is an absolute MUST VISIT! We bought a stone trough recently, Chris is a lovely bloke, VERY knowledgeable and accommodating. His stock is absolutely brilliant. His wife Chloe also has some of her art hanging which again is lovely, some pieces are large and commanding. Again, if you're near Knaresborough, make sure to call in, believe me, you'll regret missing it. Chris and Chloe both have Instagram profiles, you can view some of their stock on there but you can't beat seeing the pieces in situ. I'm summary, Chris is a smashing lad (we've not met Chloe but anyone associated with Chris has to be lovely), the shop and stock are breathtaking. Visit soon, you will not be disappointed. Check opening times before you travel though as Chris may be out and about buying more lovely things. Thank you for the stone trough Chris, Jill loves it! See you again soon hopefully.

Made a visit to knaresbrough with my partner at the weekend and popped in to have a look around. The owner made us feel so welcome and was incredibly knowledgeable about the antiques! It had just started raining as we arrived and he even opened up a few minutes early so we didn't have to stand in the rain! Will definitely visit again!

Hopewell Studios offers a wonderful experience for amateur potters and their companions. The studio provides intense support and adaptations for individuals with disabilities, allowing everyone to fully participate in the activities. Visitors praise the beautiful setting and commend the staff for making the experience possible for all participants. The studio's raku pots serve as happy reminders of special days spent creating art.
The ten week pottery course taught by Fiona Mazda was so enjoyable. Expert tuition in a relaxed fun setting. We learnt so many techniques and she helped all of us create some ceramics that we were all proud of and make some new creative friends. I have booked onto the intermediate course starting 4th February. Tuesdays are just are not the same without going to Hopewell Studios. Thank you Amanda and Fiona ⚱️

Attended the Stone carving taster day, today. Great course for a beginner, hosted by Alex Macey. Guidance provided, giving confidence and encouragement, the result is a carving above expectations. Thank you for a great day.

Can highly recommend this studio space. Just taken part in a beginners 10 week pottery course and it was so good, doing the next one now. Great tutor and organisation of the whole event.

My disabled husband and myself had a wonderful day trying a technique that I , as an amateur potter, have long wanted to try. The day more than exceeded my expectations. Amazingly, the adaptations and ntense support that was provided for my husband , meant that he too was able to fully participate. Thank you to everyone at Hopewell studios for making the experience possible for both of us. Our raku pots are a happy reminder of a special day.

Having attended a photo course, I tried to make contact about (amongst other things) when the next lighting course might be, & the return of (art-related) items I’d loaned them. But I can honestly say I’ve never been treated so ignorantly, contemptuously, and dismissively… ever. After further emailing (twice) I received another dismissive, condescending & patronising response, which completely lacked any consideration of my points or replies to my questions; but did say they’d “happily” return my items, but in their own good time… they’ve still not been received, and that’s NOT SATISFACTORY! You might also note that their website isn’t legally compliant with data protection laws (e.g. no pop-up asking if you accept their cookies; and no “privacy statement” saying whether they do or do not use cookies, or how they will/will not use your personal information. This is particularly serious in relation to the protection of children’s personal data, and is shoddy business practice at least! There are no other policy(ies) or “terms and conditions” (that you see on legitimate company web-sites) either. Also, farms are dangerous places, so you might also want to check they have public liability insurance for the specific activity you might be intending to do there (and not just a general farm or general photo-studio liability policy). As part of their requirements for liability insurance cover, they will be able to provide you (and should be happy to do so) with a full risk analysis which will include the specific protocols, procedures, and safety equipment required or advised (whether they provide it or not) for any/all individual activities that take place there. Noticeable in the Raku videos posted on their Facebook pages is the absence of most of the Health & Safety Executive’s list of compulsory personal safety equipment for this activity (“eye protection, (…) aprons and safety footwear” etc.), the point of which comes into stark reality with the burst of “flash fire” towards/around one participant in the video (24 Mar 22); and there are trip hazards all over, and with participants getting in each other’s way… that’s a recipe for disaster! One star, because I was forced by Google to.
SMax — Google review
Unfortunately, Google Reviews won’t let me respond as a thread to your reply to my previous review directly, so I’ll have to respond this way instead: 1. Some records! I’ve never attended a lighting course, it was a basic photography day, but what does that have to do with anything in my review? Thanks for confirming that I am a previous customer & verifying my review for anyone seeing this though! 2. I never actually criticised the timeliness of your reply, but it’s contents. 3. It’s a book of essays, not an essay. As I wrote… “NOT SATISFACTORY!” I’m not interested in being fobbed off with some tired, old, never-never cliché, especially after all this time. & there’s no denying that you’d not intended to return them after I asked you last year… even if you ever do. Their loss to me is a small price for the insight I’ve gained anyway. 4. What complete nonsense… there aren’t any such exceptions: it’s a legislative requirement. Granted, it’s not well policed though, so a lot of shyster business owners & shoddy businesses think they can save on the expense & get away with it, and usually do. But consumers should learn to recognise it as an indicator of the standards that business has or works to, & be very wary of other shyster or shoddy short-cuts that business/service may be taking before judging whether to use them, or not. 5. That’s good to know, but you’re legally required to inform users of your web-site by having it clearly stated on your web-site, whatever your policy(ies), & terms & conditions of use are. “Personal permission” happens when a user clicks the relevant box, whether there’s personal contact between you or not. You have a duty of care in this regard towards your visitors, customers, & clients… whatever you’ve been told by who knows: & ignorance, or bad advice is no defence in this or the other concerns I’ve raised. 6. I don’t believe that. If that were true then I’m sure you would have written that as a reply to my FB review, instead of deleting it along with ALL of your other more positive reviews. You claim you “have extensive insurance”. Some of those shysters & shoddy business owners I mentioned above use phrases like that to obscure the fact that they’ve not got the specific insurance they are being asked about: such as my question, as to whether you have got liability insurance that actually covers the participants in the event of an incident or accident? 7. I don’t believe that either: you were advertising & promoting it in advance to anyone who was interested in attending & willing to pay £95. So, are you saying that all of the participants knew they were part of your “private test group”... where, save for some heat-proof/heavy duty work gloves (not fire-proof gauntlets) out of the listed HSE protective safety wear was going to be provided or used? If there was any truth in your point 6. (esp. “risk assessment”) then you would know ABSOLUTELY(!) that you cannot do that. So, are you saying that was it your “external Health and Safety officer” that recommended you do a “private test group” without participants using any of the safety-wear listed by the HSE, etc.? If that’s what you’re claiming you should report them. There is no way that any professional health and safety expert would accept, condone, or support that nonsense whatsoever. The only “training purposes” your videos are suitable for is instruction on how Raku shouldn’t be done! If you have a comprehensive “risk-assessment”, code of safe practice, “liability insurance that actually covers the participants”, & the name of your “external Health and Safety officer” or their company then please do email me your evidence. Do you know that legally, this is NOT “commercially sensitive information” & should be available to the public, local authority environmental Health Officers, or the HSE if ever asked for, as you will know if you’ve gone to the trouble & expense of having these things done. I’ll be happy to alter or correct my review if you do.
