Talyllyn Railway, located in Tywyn, is a restored 19th-century railway originally built for slate transportation. Today, it offers pleasure rides and exhibitions. The railway provides a unique opportunity to experience the historic charm of steam trains while enjoying scenic views. It's a great attraction for both history enthusiasts and families looking for an enjoyable outing.
The Talyllyn Railway is a narrow guage railway that runs for 7.5 miles passing through beautiful countryside with several stations/halts along the way. The line was originally created to carry slate. It was the first railway in the world to be preserved back in 1951. The trip along the line and back takes about 2 hours including a 30 minute stop at Abergynolwyn where you can take a short stroll to see a waterfall or enjoy a drink and a snack in the tea room. There is also a cafe at Talyllyn. If you alight at Dolgoch station you can walk along to see Dolgoch Falls which is a set of three falls in a beautiful woodland ravine. You can rejoin the train the train later. Just make sure you have a timetable! The train carriages available offer saloons,an open carriage plus first class and an observation coach. The latter two require a supplement to the regular fare. There is a carriage that accommodates wheelchairs,I would recommend contacting the railway before hand as spaces are limited. There are toilets facilities at Talyllyn and Abergynolwyn. There is a good sized car park at Talyllyn, charges are £2 for 4 hours and £4 for 8 hours. I believe there were further charges for a longer stay. As of June 2025 the adult fare is £28 for an adult rover ticket, child fare is £14. There are some lovely photo opportunities along the way, the scenery really is beautiful.

Really enjoyed our trip, we got the 10:30 train all the way to the end, had a little snack and a short wait and then got back on and off at the Falls. We had around 2 hrs here and had a great walk to see the various waterfalls, then back on the train back to Tywyn. We looked around the museum and the boys played with the wooden train set. It was a great full day out!

Start (or end) if an amazing narrow guage railway, with immaculately maintained steam service. Pricing of tickets may seem steep at first glance, but unlike many preserved services this is a 2 and half hour round trip through the amazing Welsh countryside. Due to this, services can be a little limited, so best to check the date and timetable before arriving to ensure you don't have a long wait. The station also has a small but very well thought out and designed museum of both the railway, and Thomas author including a recreation of his study. The station also includes a good cafe with the usual drinks and very good food. Def worth a visit if your in the area, and what could be better than a bit of time on a steam train

Went for the Awdry Extravaganza with my partner who is a very big Thomas and locomotive enthusiast. Staff were really friendly and welcoming especially to someone who has no idea about any of this stuff. Food at the cafe was amazing definitely came more than once for breakfast. The locomotives were amazing it’s nice to see history come to life. Over if you’re in the area I highly recommend going.

Lots on fun on this steam train! Allow 2-2.5h and drivers have a tea break halfway! Views are fab with a waterfall en route! Take a blanket and don’t sit right behind the engine as you will get soot up your nose!! 4/5 as quite pricey but didn’t mind as it supports this heritage railway. Museum free and cafe was 10/10! Great food and gluten free options.

My wife booked us both on The Slate Trail for a surprise birthday outing. We are both Vegan and found that the food in the caffe caters very well for vegans. The tour was fantastic with regular stops at different stations. The guides in the tour were brilliant and interacted with everyone giving us all little bits of information. We had two dogs with us and one is not able to walk far. They accommodated for this very well. Both dogs joined us in the carriage and the pushchair was held in the cargo area at the rear of the train. We didn’t know what to expect when we arrived but have both thoroughly enjoyed the outing and will be recommending it to our friends and family.

Loved it! Staff were really friendly. Beautiful experience. Its also volunteer led. You can buy tickets just to and from destination and avoid paying the higher cost of explorer/wanderer tickets. Also make the suggested donation if your a taxpayer as get the cafe voucher then you can help then to support its future. Doesnt cost you anymore that way!
Steve K — Google review
What an absoutle gem of small preserved railway. We got on the transport for Wales mainline, which was delayed & the staff called ahead to make sure we wouldn't miss the 1st train which we didn't. The track is 7 miles long, but through the beautiful countryside, plenty of walks, cafes & toilets. You must go & spend the day well worth it

Known for its mouthwatering pizzas and friendly service, it's the perfect spot to satisfy your hunger after a day of exploring. Lovely food, lovely service and a place to be, was only on holiday for 3 days and went back every day for the wonderful pizza!!

Having arrived late and got let down by Tesco delivery a whole different story :( We found Peckish open. Drove to pick up at almost closing time and such a nice experience. Friendly staff, great pizza’s and no complaints when I got home to 3 hungry adults and 2 hungry children. Thanks, you saved us!
Simon P — Google review
The pizza itself is great. The fact a member of staff was vaping in an enclosed area around uncovered food was not so great. Reported to the council with evidence. If you can’t be bothered to hide your vaping in the front, it worries me what you’re doing in the back!!!

guy who is serving needs a lesson in people skills.. don't try and pay by card unless you like a death stare. check your order before you leave as these guys seem to struggle to communicate with each other, mind, when speaking is done in grunts and one word answers that is obvious. walked in happy, walked out fuming

We ate here last night 23/04/2025 as we were staying locally. Never again, kebabs were not good undercooked and had no flavour. 2 of the 4 of us have been really poorly all night and today and the was the only thing we ate. I would avoid this place at all costs

Was in Tywyn for the day on a Sunday so little open found this place as we were leaving. £39 for 4 meals, drove off to find a pleasant spot to find a fair chunk of the order missing......morale of the story check your food before leaving folks

Nice pizza and chips although not the cheapest. There was a fair bit of grease/oil under the pizza which was not great. All in all a decent pizza.

Not the best. Had better road kill. Also missed part of the order. Captive audience

Nestled in the charming town of Tywyn, The Retreat Bar & Pizzeria is a delightful spot that promises a memorable dining experience. Known for its exceptional coffee and mouthwatering meals, this eatery particularly shines with its pizzas, which are a must-try for any visitor. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it an ideal place to unwind after exploring the beautiful surroundings. With a focus on fresh ingredients and carefully crafted flavors, diners can expect delicious dishes that cater to various tastes.
The place feels modern up market and the pizza are classy. Not stodgy pizzas .. they're those nice flat tasty ones when they're made by someone who cares about the food. It's very dog friendly. If there's anything I'd change is they could just add a bit more variety to food choice. It's pizzas only. But good quality pizzas. It's just a nice place to have your tea. The lady serving is very friendly.
Pug A — Google review
Brilliant place. Fantastic pizza, clearly made with care and tasted unique, not like every other pizza around. Also caters for gluten free which is a rarity and causes my wife a lot of issues as a celiac. Atmosphere and service was great, would come again.
Chris M — Google review
Very nice pizza. Friendly staff. Good atmosphere.
Jim W — Google review
Has potential to be brilliant. Had a lovely vibe and the staff were pretty nice. However, the pizzas were really overpriced for what we got. It cost £16 for something similar to what I could have made at home - the dough wasn't right and felt a bit too "homemade" by someone who didn't know what they were doing. I wouldn't be able to do better, but when eating out I'd hope the chef could

Lovely welcome from Toni and her fellow staff. So friendly and helpful. We had 3 different pizzas, a lovely cocktail and 2 contented dogs lying in the sun on the patio at the back of the bisro. Highly recommend

We experienced this lovely cute bistro or resto as the exceptional ONE on our journey! We nearly fell of our chairs when the dishes got served, glanced at it, tried and were blown away of the quality and taste.. The cook and the whole staff did a really great job! So far, we keep your menu and the evening with the nice conversation in good memories. Thank you and see you soon again😉

WOW!! Visiting Tywyn you must try this place. Food & Service Excellent! Live in Tywyn? Must support this local family what a Gem. I went out my comfort zone & Had the Goan Fish curry Amazing!! The flavours & full of Everything! Highly would recommend. Mom had the Crab Salad was beautiful & Fresh. Puddings to Die for! Mom had the Tiramisu laced with Rum 😋. We will be back with the Family 😁.

Absolutely incredible, would recommend every time! My boyfriend and I live in Sarasota, Florida and have come to Tywyn for the last two years. We have eaten here quite a bit at this point, sometimes planned but most of the time last minute as we know it’s always going to be good! We’ve had their mussels, lobster roll, curry’s, soft shell crab, mussels in linguine, and an absolutely fabulous dessert, the Carmel biscoff cheesecake. The seabass was incredible, and the scallops are the best we’d ever had. The owner, Scott, is a very friendly guy, down to earth and knows food! He prides himself on a simple but impactful menu with good ingredients! He cares about sourcing high quality ingredients and you can definitely taste the different in the food! Our waitress, Tilly, was also fantastic! Very attentive and genuine! One day was my boyfriend’s birthday and they went above and beyond to make it special with candles in the cheesecake and the whole restaurant joined in for “Happy Birthday”! If you’re in Tywyn, the Salt Marsh should definitely be on your “to do” list!

Finding a seafood restaurant at the seaside is unbelievably difficult. Finding a good one next to impossible... But this is one of them. The food was great and the service outstanding (thanks for the toffee ice-cream with strawberry sauce xD). Really good music as well. Overall amazing experience!
Michael H — Google review
Wow, if your in the area don't hesitate to stop here! The menu is fantastic, the food is fantastic and so is the atmosphere! Great options for kids too! Specials menu was immense! We had a combination of Scallops, Pork Belly Bao Buns, Korean Cauliflower and Tempura mackerel for starters. Then for mains we had kids fish and chips, a Seafood Goan Curry and a Lobster Thermidor - just amazing! And we had 2 desserts a Coconut Panna Cotta and a Biscoff Salted Caramel Cheese Cake...both epic! The service was fantastic! Ive been to a massive selection of restaurants across the UK (Michelin, AA ...), this was one of my favourites!
Abby B — Google review
The food was fantastic, the scallops and the linguine were faultless. Wonderful friendly service, I can’t recommend enough if you like good ingredients cooked to perfection.
Claire H — Google review
Utterly fantastic Bistro /Restaurant that serves high quality local ingredients, treated with love, care and imagination, seeing reject to brasserie classics but with little local twists to make you smile. This gave my family the very best meal of our holiday 😁😋 The personal, attentive, individual and jovial customer service given by the owner made us feel thoroughly at home. Which was clearly alao the case across the well populated dining room. My wife and daughter absolutely loved their new Brunchtime Burritos. The 'Salty B' & 'Cheesy B', their only criticism was that they were then too full to take advantage of the highly tempting, but unfortunately not tasted, desert menu! The Seafood Paella was fresh and loaded with taste, the sourdough/tartine garlic bread was tasty but not over salted. The drinks selection was inspired and the knowledge of all of the ingredients, dishes and drinks on offer was evident at all times. The simple act of bringing a crisp, chilled bottle of tap water and 3 glasses, without being asked, is a classy touch so often missed by many restaurants. Judging by the high quality of the cook books which inspire the creativity of the chefs, from Galton Blackston, to Rick Stein to many varied Far Eastern delights,, the food will be satisfying and delighting the locals of Tywyn (and the odd touring family) for many years to come. I really hope the well deserved accolades do too! 👏 👏 👏

Booked us in last minute, family of 5 on weekday, felt very much like a family business which I liked, the waitress was lovely and was nice seeing the chef work so we could thank him. Food was really good especially the lamb rumb and mint mash, really nice, the prawn tacos were nice also. My only one thing, pina colada I think del boy, cream, cherry, umbrella, this one tasted great but was served in short glass not a long glass, by that's more probably my expectation still tasted great. Went with three kids, 12/10/4 all enjoyed the food

Absolutely loved this place! The food was extremely tasty and full of flavour – every dish was cooked to perfection. The decor is beautiful and creates such a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a great meal and a relaxed, enjoyable vibe.

Me and my dad went out for dinner together and had the most amazing food! In my dad’s words “easily the best meal he’s had in the past 5 years!!” He chose the Goats cheese salad for starter and the the Seafood Pasta! I had the chorrizo starter and lamb main! it was to die for. Our waiter Ross was so lovely and really personable! Would 100% recommend 💯

Pre booked and visited on a Saturday evening a couple of weeks ago for a group of 4. Had a starter and main and all of us fully enjoyed our meals. Nice relaxed atmosphere and excellent staff. Only slight criticism is that one of our party is vegan and although options are available, there is no mention of this on the menu. Overall, we had a lovely time and would certainly recommend.

Very nice meal - good portions, everything piping hot, really good quality and tasted beautiful. We got the mixed grill, lamb shashlik and some sides. All of it very nice. Would recommend. I got takeaway from this restaurant on this occasion.

Ordered the Dine India Special madras hot, which had no descernable spice. My wife ordered a Lamb jalfrezi, which was spicier than the madras hot dish. Came as tikka lamb, which wasn't mentioned on the menu and wife doesn't like tikka. Everything tasted sweet, chicken was rubbery. Other than the sweetness about the most bland curry I have ever had. Threw in some free Onion Bhaji which somehow, had no taste either. On the positive side, the Keema naan and boiled rice were ok. **Editing review following post from the owner. Since the place take cash only, I can't see what they're intending to do here. What invoice number is ever provided by a cash only, collection only curry house? Go by your own experience, don't trust this kind of tokenistic, poor rating neutralising tactic. Avoid.

My favourite place in tywyn for Indian food. But I have not tried the other one yet next door but then I don't need to because the food here is very good and tasty. It's nothing exotic inside but who needs that when the food is important. I have never had a poor takeaway to date yet and I have had a lot. Chicken is soft and quality. It is pricey compared to home but you would expect it I guess. The food does Taste pretty good. I other words they make nice curries

Food ok. Good nan bread. Fast service, starter arrived minute's after been given popadoms. Worst chutney tray ever, don't bother. Advertising Monday as banquet night, but not doing it when you go in. Take your own alcohol or buy at pub next door.

This place does not have an alcohol license but you can take your own. Very nice food, we had the set menu for 2 people. This included poppadoms, 2 starters, 2 main dishes and 3 sides. Lamb bhuna was excellent and all the other dishes were of a good quality. Great value for money.

Very reasonably priced, managed to feed two of us for £20. So impressed that a takeaway in this location would offer tofu/vegan options. I usually struggle to find somewhere that does, will order again 😊

Ordered through the phone, Guy was originally rude and seemed fed up just from listing our order. We waited 2 hours for the food to be available and on arrival was told it was cash only and was told to go to the cashpoint. After all that we were ready to sit down and eat a nice chinese. Food was one of the worst chinese i’ve ever had and tasted frozen. After opening up the duck I noticed there was still feathers inside of the duck. Everything else tasted dry and very lackluster. Won’t be putting my faith here again. One star is generous from us here. Would give it none if i could.
Harry H — Google review
Nothing to shout about... it filled a gap, wont be ordering again. Wasnt told a price over the phone, wasnt told we had to pay cash, was told to walk to the cashpoint down the road when we arrived... Once we got the food back, opening up the dishes.. smelled great, nothing wrong with the taste of the dishes, but egg rice, chicken balls, crispy chilli beef, cantonese s+s chicken and beef chow mein all clearly microwave heated as was all chewy and tough to bite through, nothing crispy about the chilli beef at all... The portions not too bad, but the szechuan beef and cashew duck were lacking in meat, from the pictures provided you can see the amount of bamboo shoots and veg forced in to fill out the dish AFTER the meat was taken out and veg already eaten... for over £10 for the 2 dishes, i find this insulting to the consumer... Ill be finding somewhere else for chinese food next time we're down this way...
Dan M — Google review
Ok it's the only Chinese takeaway in tywyn. Yep the only one. But they don't abuse that fact. It's nice food. It's standard choice. But the beef in the beef curry isn't chewy and fatty. That how I normally judge Chinese food. I have never had a bad one and I am a regular. There's no bad days. It's a popular busy place. If you go in there when everybody and their dog are on holiday you are promptly warned of an immense time to wait. But to be fair that's not that often. The fella serving is a nice guy.

We had food from here twice while on holiday. Both times it was hot and delicious, the best takeaway we've had. The service was very friendly also.
Janet L — Google review
Not a bad Chinese, chicken balls a bit flat. Rice and satay chicken really good. Decent price and efficient service.

Indian restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Tywyn, the Bay of Bengal is a delightful restaurant that has quickly become a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Known for its mouthwatering takeaway options, this eatery offers an array of delicious dishes that leave patrons raving about their meals. While it can get busy with orders, leading to some delays, many agree that the flavors are well worth the wait. Just remember to bring cash as they operate on a cash-only basis!
Came here as our usual Indian restaurant has received a zero hygiene rating and not disappointed. Excellent food. From onion bhaji to dhansak and tarka Dal, all excellent. Tasty. Good service. Recommended.
Grant C — Google review
Pretty good food, although the chicken was a touch on the dry side if I was being picky. This is one of a few restaurants in the area that aren't taking card payments. They also don't have a licence to sell alcohol. This is a drawback, and for me, only raises questions in the mind of customers about it being a 'cash in hand' business.
Andy M — Google review
Excellent service and nice food: 3.5/5. You can bring your own booze if you’re into that lager with curry thing like Dave Lister. I had the veg naga, the veg was great quality, the spice level was decent but was missing a little of the fruity flavours I expected. Which may be a little harsh but I eat a lot of curry in the Midlands. The rice and the tandoori roti were superb and the waiter was very friendly and the food was prepared nicely for us, it wasn’t very busy as it was early in the evening.
Andrew H — Google review
The meat (lamb? goat? Mutton?) tasted strange and was very grissly. The sauces the meat was cooked in was most ofd. We really didn't enjoy the food at all sadly 😔

11.7.25 Roughly 6-7pm. Lovely food. Lovely service. Both meals Lovely. Kids meals available too. Cash only venue. 2 meals 1 child's meal. 3 spirit. 2 sparking water. Total = £60. We saved half for tea the next day. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Came here for the first time on our holiday as a family and decided we wanted to try here for food. We will definitely be back, food was ready in fifteen mins on a busy Friday night and it was absolutely amazing.

Restaurant
There is a lack of sufficient ratings for Cegin Fach, a cafe located in Tywyn, United Kingdom. It is one of the first establishments in the area and offers various food options, excellent service, value for money, and a pleasant atmosphere. The cafe has received positive reviews on popular travel websites such as Tripadvisor and Booking.com. Additionally, it is situated near other dining options like Cambrian Cafe and Bay of Bengal.
Absolutely fantastic! Was looking for a cheapy Café as Dolly's down the road was closed but found this place. What wonderful cheerful, polite staff and food was wonderful! The price was above the cheap places I normally go to but the quality makes it worth every penny. Breakfast comes with a tea of coffee and you can swap out an item of breakfast. All cooked perfectly and nicely presented. Will certainly return when in the area again. My only gripe would be that the butter was from the fridge and hard to spread but that's more a problem with my ability lol... Definitely will return. The staff really made us feel welcome too. Very clean and cosy too. Wonderful. Thank you!
Paul — Google review
Lovely food, lovely staff and great atmosphere Dog friendly ✨ Stopped off on our way back home! Only downside is no toilets in the cafe but the public ones over the road by the cinema are available to use for free
Steph F — Google review
Fantastic breakfast and service. The little things such as having soft butter to put on your toast really makes a difference. Will 100% visit again when in the area.

Very friendly staff and a really nice atmosphere! We had paninis 10/10, and the cake is delicious. The coffee is really great quality, too Overall, AMAZING Thanks for the nice lunch 😋 My daughter especially enjoyed the loaded hot chocolate

Possibly one of the best pancakes I have ever had. Cegin Fach is the heart and soul of tywyn. I'd urge all tourists and locals to visit this fine establishment. I hope to come here again very soon. The pancakes and syrup were D to the licious and the black americano was very high quality

Bakery
If you're a fan of independent bakeries, Tywyn Bakery is an absolute must-visit! Tucked away in a charming locale, this delightful spot boasts a clean and inviting atmosphere complemented by friendly staff. The real star here is the food; their lamb and mint pasty is simply divine, perfectly balanced in flavor. Freshly baked goods like pork pies straight from the oven are also on offer.
This is one of the best bakeries I’ve ever visited. I had the most amazing white sandwich loaf, a plum crumble sponge slice, and two of their famous butter buns (which were delicious). Reasonable prices and a wide selection of baked goodies. Get there early as they sell out fast! I regret that my first visit had to be on the last day of my holiday, otherwise did have been in there very day. Note: Google maps seems to list the same bakery under Y-Popty in the same location, with an opening time of 10am. This is incorrect and the bakery is Tywyn Bakery that opens from 7am to 2pm. They also have a Tywyn Bakery Ltd Facebook page.
Joanne R — Google review
Iam always on the look out for independent bakers that do pasties etc. So when I came across this little gem I wasn't disappointed. Place was clean and tidy, with friendly staff. But let's get to the main part, the food! Purchased this morning was a lamb & mint pasty and a porkpie, that was straight out the oven. The lamb & mint pasty was just amazing, right balance of everything, I can't fault it. Porkpie still yet to be eaten.
Stuart T — Google review
I visit this bakery every time I visit Tywyn. They have the best sausage rolls (better than Greggs!), flapjacks are lovely and the buttered buns are delicious especially when freshly baked. The best bakery around for miles.
Alex T — Google review
Good selection of pastries and other baked goods. Quality OK but nothing exceptional. Fairly priced.
Daniel G — Google review
Lovely. Great choice of cakes. Ger there early though!
Karen R — Google review
Simply put, the food is amazing and the price was really good just under £12 for 2 large pasties, x2 large sausage rolls. But get there before 11 or everything is gone.
Stuart H — Google review
Fantastic little artisan?? bakery in a small village. The smell of baking wafts out of the doors and the trick is to get there early! The pies, the pasties the unreal Tywyn honey bun. And the local people use the place. Breads are unreal. I put weight on walking past😁. If you are there then pop in. The locals use it so its got to be good.
Nick M — Google review
Great that there is an actual bakery, something that is missing elsewhere in these parts. Out of season so reduced produce on offer. Brown and white loaves were ok, nothing special other than being real bread as opposed to supermarket pap. Tried the pork pie, nice pastry but the filling was a bit bland, very much like the filling for a sausage roll but without spicing.

We came here on Saturday for breakfast and the food was soooo nice! The staff were really friendly. My bf had the larger breakfast, which comes with either a cup of tea or coffee. I had the ham and cheese omelette with beans and hash browns, the omelette was hugeeee! The menu had a really good variety of food, especially for breakfast, it wasn't just your usual full english, they also had eggs on toast and you can choose how to have your eggs, beans on toast and they even had cheese on toast! Will definitely be coming here for breakfast next time we're in Tywyn.

Excellent breakfast and lunch venue, tasty food friendly staff. Expect to queue if you don't get there early but they will take your number and call you if a table becomes free. Revisited today we got there 10 minutes before opening to secure our table still 👌.

We’ve been a few times now for Sunday lunch. Excellent quality and great value too. A lovely couple as well. Can definitely recommend
Oldbiker007 — Google review
Really poor choice on menu. You'd think they might offer to just replace the sausage and knock up a non meat breakfast, or even god forbid get some Linda McCartney sausages in which can be kept frozen for months. If the choice isn't there, no one will ask for it, let alone consider their less fatty cholesterol laden options.
Leonie S — Google review
Cracking Sunday lunch. Followed by a exerllent strawberry cheese cake. They don't sell spirits/beer but you can take your own.

Couldn’t rate this more highly .. really lovely presented quality produce on my Ploughman’s, just the ticket for a hot summers day. Portion size was huge and I had to take half of my plate home with me. The all day breakfast was plentiful, cleanly cooked and again fresh quality ingredients. Our Caramel vanilla frappe was very naughty, but very nice. Lovely little gift shop and some nice garden stock, which also got attention from my wallet, much to the hubby’s annoyance! All in all, a really lovely place to have taken my mother in law for a spot of lunch
Jacquie W — Google review
Lovely little gem. The lady here was also super helpful and a superb wealth of information for where to visit while we stayed in the area. The cafe was closed, so we didn't experience the food but would definitely go back again.
Helen S — Google review
Insisted that we placed an order and paid before they'd let my wife use the toilet. She was desperate and we found this attitude akin to extortion. We left and the couple at Celtic Carpets 2 doors away, allowed her to use the loo. Hope Pendre Garden Centre and Cafe are proud of themselves. Shameful business practice.

We really appreciated their time and honest advice in buying an outdoor water fountain. It was a pleasure to meet Gareth and Dawn.

Fab garden centre. Very friendly people, great with the kids. Can never do enough for you. Great food, when we have ate in or taken away. They have thought of everything to keep going and lift peoples spirits during lockdown. Always have a laugh in there, they have a brilliant sense of humour. Such a great little garden centre. Tywyn needs more people like these guys
