Izakaya restaurant

Modern izakaya restaurant
Gama, located in Point Arena, CA, is the county's only Japanese izakaya offering delicious Asian food. The restaurant focuses on serving homemade-style Japanese dishes using local, seasonal ingredients prepared with Japanese cooking techniques. Their menu includes delightful options such as karaage, chawanmushi, goma-ae (poached spinach with toasted sesame dressing), miso soup, misir and trout.
Well worth planning a trip around! If you’re not from the area and thinking of planning a trip up here let this restaurant be your reason to book it. We are from LA and this was truly phenomenal and so reasonable for the price, I was sort of shocked at how reasonably priced it is. Our waitress/host was super helpful picking out a sake as well. Really perfect all around.
Laurel A — Google review
We ate dinner here for the first time this past weekend. The clean cedar smell when you walk in is so refreshing. It is simple and spacious. Not overcrowded. I would definitely make reservations. There were so many Sake choices and they bring a tray with all different sake cups and tell you to pick your vessel. The menu is simple and we had never had any of the items but the waiter was very helpful and we enjoyed the new experience of food. Very fresh and delicately prepared. If you are wanting Sushi and/or hibachi style restaurant food this is not the place. It was a wonderful experience and very relaxing.
Jennifer — Google review
A true gem for anyone who loves impeccable and intentional food with a sublime sake list to boot. The team is so generous, knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. Thank you Gama, we’ll definitely be back.
Liz F — Google review
This humble spot is stylish, and low-key elegant. The service fantastic. Every item I enjoyed, hit as it ought to. All freshly prepared, clearly crafted with intention. In terms of texture and flavor, a harmonic symphony of the mouth feels and tastes. The morsels vibe clean, the type of food you feel good after eating deep within your being! I enjoyed the yuzu salad, maitake tempura, chawanmushi, gindara misoyaki, karaage, and green tea ice cream with black maple syrup as dessert!
Ambrosia K — Google review
We showed up super late and really didn't want to be a pain, but... The staff welcomed us with ope arms and provided us a table and amazing food when they didn't have to. We had the Karage , potatoes Salad, grilled peppers, and chicken meatball. All dishes were amazing. I could eat 100 peppers it they had them. Must try while on this coastal trip , is give 10 stars if I could. Thank you again.
Brannon D — Google review
Something you can't expect to find on the no-internet road. We were looking for something simple to eat, and got a full experience, a modern and stylish place with an intriguingly simple and small menu, but perfectly matching tastes and outstanding service. So, now, that’s the particular point on my map, to revisit with the reason!
Vladislava K — Google review
We were, overall, pretty pleased with our dinner here. The review is really hurt by the fact that our first dish—raw trout—came with a rather long hair mixed into the garnish. We had the dish sent back and they replaced it, but I feel that they could have taken the matter more seriously (the server didn’t even seem surprised), and I think they should have comped the dish or offered something to make amends. To boot, the replacement came out and the sashimi wasn’t as good as in the first dish—I think because it was still a bit too cold and hadn’t come to room temperature. Our server was kind, but a little inattentive and I had a hard time getting her attention. Expect to take your time—it took us about an hour and a half to get through dinner, which seemed about average from surrounding customers. I’ve dined at many American izakayas, and I’d say the food was very good despite feeling put off by the hair in our first dish. Dishes we liked: (hairless) raw trout, rice, matcha ice cream w/ strawberry puree, egg soufflé w/ bolette, grilled shishito skewer, pork belly, and chicken knee. You can see the hair in the green onion, photo attached.
Mason S — Google review
Let me get to the point : this restaurant is a Michelin star level experience at 50% of the price it would have been in San Francisco. And 25% of the price it would have been in Tokyo. And yet thoroughly authentic and at the same time original. It’s not for folks who are looking for sushi rolls. But if you want to have a completely unique dining experience, don’t miss this gem. The owners are genuinely nice, local couple steeped in Japanese food culture. Best dinner I’ve had in a year - and that covers top of the line in 10 countries.

Organic restaurant
Point Arena Pizza is a modern and spacious pizzeria with an industrial-themed decor, offering ample seating options. The restaurant serves brick-oven pizza, local organic salads, beer, and wine for both dine-in and take-away. It also welcomes private parties. Customers praise the delicious brick oven pizza with fresh toppings and crunchy yet chewy crust. The staff is friendly and helpful in making selections, while the sunset view from the restaurant is described as exceptional.
This place was incredible! The pizza was great with their special dough, and it had a sunset view that was second to none. The staff was kind and helped us decide given we had never been there before. Moreover, there was a couple locals near the front who chimed in with their favorites. The pizza had a quick turnaround and was served hot and crispy. Our favorite. Lastly, we can’t not talk about the view. The pier and the ocean were amazing! Plus the outdoor seating glowed as the sun went down. We will for sure stop again if we are cruising the 1!
Donald M — Google review
A really terrific place to stop for pizza. The bites into the pizza never ran the risk of pulling the entire shelf of toppings off. The crust crunched but held chew, and the ingredients tasted great. The atmosphere, being so close to the ocean, really made it extra inviting. Our part of four did not have trouble finding a spot on the Saturday we went. + cool art on the walls + not overly complicated menu + served pizza by the slice
Tasi A — Google review
Stopped by about a month ago while we were in the area. Staff was very friendly, the inside of the restaurant is charming, the view from the outdoor seating was beautiful and the pizza was delicious! The crust was light and crunchy, the sauce tasted so good! Overall 10/10! Hopefully I’ll be back in the future.
Diana S — Google review
Solid pizza option with great view. Good service. I could use more topping, feels like a lot of crust when you compare ratio. The beet salad was my favorite and made me feel better about having the pizza afterwards. 5/5 The Greek pizza 4/5 Pepperoni bacon pizza 3/5 Eat it hot! Does not travel well- very chewy crust.
B K — Google review
Even though it felt like a place the locals frequent, we were welcomed and really enjoyed the sights and conversations, both inside and outside. It's great that you can get a slice, especially for the kids.
Blake S — Google review
Cute pizza place offering Pliny the Elder from Russian River Brewing. Sunset views are great with a close view of the pier.

We love point arena pizza! Amazing pizza combos, awesome salads and great beer selection. Family vibes, indoor and outdoor seating. Plus you are a stones throw from the ocean. Highly recommend stopping in if you are near on highway 1

Mexican restaurant
Nestled in downtown Point Arena, My Mexican Restaurant is a hidden gem that you’ll easily spot by the Uneda Meat Market sign. This cozy eatery has retained its charm over the years, featuring a small but dedicated team—one person at the front and another in the kitchen. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with music playing softly in the background as you savor your meal.
Experiencing the dishes at this restaurant was like being transported back to my childhood kitchen, where the authentic flavors of Mexico were a daily delight, courtesy of my mother's expert cooking. This establishment stands out as one of the premier destinations for truly authentic Mexican cuisine that I've had the pleasure of trying. Each bite was a vivid reminder of home, crafted with the same love and attention to detail that I remember so fondly. A must-visit for anyone seeking to experience genuine Mexican culinary traditions at their finest.

What a great spot in downtown Point Arena…we ran in the place literally 5 mins before they closed, hoping to grab something without being a pain. The nice guy at the counter encouraged us to sit down & take our time. Now to the food…I had the chicken mole & my wife had chicken tacos. Both were FANTASTICO!!! This place was great!!

Please support these amazing people! They’re the kindest people whom genuinely care for everyone inside and outside of their restaurant! Their food is super flavourful and filling, you can truly taste the love that they put into your meal in every bite you take! I recommend this place to anyone in point arena!

Very friendly family run business. Went there two nights in a row. Had homemade guacamole and fantastic chile Relleno. Nothing stronger than water but last night was freezing cold so we had hot tea. Great service Thank you 👍
Francis C — Google review
I was a bit disappointed in the fish and chips. I guess I shouldn't have ordered any from a Mexican restaurant. It was barely battered and the fries that came with it was under cooked, maybe they rushed it because it was closing time? The burrito was not seasoned at all, the meat bland, rice bland, and beans were bland. The fish taco was good. The enchilada was just a soft taco folded with sweet enchilada sauce on top. No cheese. The ladies were very friendly. Very disappointed in the food. We paid $30 dollars.
Cheryl B — Google review
Amazing food, amazing service with great recommendations. Clearly a local favorite with all the take-away orders. I’d like to highlight again the cordial service and staff. The god was seasoned to our taste as well! Yum.

Nestled in a historic building at 265 Main Street, The Record is a charming pub that has quickly become a beloved gathering spot for both locals and visitors in Point Arena. This casual eatery boasts an inviting atmosphere filled with community spirit, making it the perfect place to unwind. The menu features hearty pub classics like mouthwatering sandwiches—especially the pulled pork sandwich and baked potato topped with pulled pork—as well as crispy chicken wings that have garnered rave reviews.
We are so happy to have this historic building reopened as a fabulous restaurant, pub and community hangout! It is fabulous to have live music again, and for our monthly poetry/music event to perform here. The young, highly skilled chef makes great sandwiches and other pub fair. The free popcorn is great, goes well with beer from the brewery right here in the building!
Lauren S — Google review
We were driving on the highway to reach a small village of Point Arenas, on the way to the Point Arena Lighthouse, and we passed by this restaurant called The Records. A vibrant atmosphere, good music, very nice decoration, with self-service water, very clean bathrooms. We ordered, it looked like a new place. You can see and feel it, the food is made with love. I ordered a chicken soup with vegetables and a sangria, and my husband ordered a sandwich, a Reuben sandwich, it came with pickles. They also announce that their food is bought supporting local people to get their products. So in general, it was a very good experience, and I recommend if you are traveling around here, on the Pacific Coast of California, on the 1, going up to the Point Arena Lighthouse, stop by the restaurant The Records. Enjoy. Also, there is going to be, I think on September 20th, a celebration, I leave the information in the photos, in case you see this review nearby and want to stop by.

This place has an impecable vibe and delightful food. We ordered the focaccia bread and blue cheese wings—and damn it was freaking gooooood. If you like sour beers try the Point Arena Brewery Sour. The bar stool chairs are deceivingly comfortable with deep seats and a solid back rest. Look around and notice the care and attention to detail in the decor and interior design. While I love a limited menu, there seems to be something for everyone.
Becca K — Google review
Overall great experience at The Record. Solid beers, delicious pork pulled sandwich, and with a warm welcoming smile. Prices are quite fair for this level of quality. Certainly worth a visit, or two, or ...

Kim was an amazing server. She made sure my family was happy and helped us navigate the menu. The drinks were delicious and my kids loved the lemonade with edible flowers in the ice cubes. The food was excellent and every detail down to the garnishes added to the vibe. Bright, warm atmosphere. We will definitely be back when we are in the area.

I’m so happy to have The Record. It’s a beautiful atmosphere, full of so many beautiful gifts from the community. The crew here is such a delight and they all have incredible talents- hospitality is on point. What a great place for an afternoon tea and ice cream! The pulled pork and roasted salad is a hearty and delicious. Are you a vegetarian? They got you covered. The beverages will satisfy drinkers and non drinkers, alike. Seriously, beautiful teas are served. Hot and cold and sparkling. So fun! Open til 10, I like it very much.

When planning your coastal adventure, make sure to include a visit to Pier Chowder House & Tap Room. Nestled in the charming town of Point Arena, this delightful eatery is renowned for its creamy chowder and an impressive selection of beers on tap. Whether you’re indulging in their famous seafood platter or savoring grilled salmon paired with seasonal vegetables, the culinary offerings are sure to impress. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot for both locals and travelers alike.
We discovered this place through the Garmin GPS, and the name was very attractive to hungry travelers. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a couple taps, and ordered the chowder and a large seafood platter to share. The chowder was great, and the seafood platter did not disappoint. We were warned this could be too much food, but we managed to enjoy it all. Great food, friendly fly staff and customers too! If you are anywhere near this wonderful restaurant & tap room be sure to try it yourself.

This place is a hidden gem!! Both styles of chowder were amazing! Crab cakes the best I ever had! If you are in Point Arena, you should definitely stop here for lunch or dinner. If you are within 10 miles of here, you should add this place to your itinerary!
La J — Google review
Wonderful little hidden gem restaurant. Tucked back at the pier, best food we have had all week while visiting the area. Staff was wonderful to and accommodating for our large group. All items were hand made in house (try the ranch!) Which may have added time but was well worth it! Will be visiting again. Located On the second floor of the building, has stairs and elevator access.
Tanya Y — Google review
This place has the best chowder I've ever had on the west coast!! Homemade, soupy, chunky potatoes, and tons of clams!!Amazingly tasty brews too! With beautiful scenery! We sat and watched the whales off shore. We will definitely be back!
Heidi W — Google review
Location is the best part of this restaurant, you get a great ocean view no matter where you sit. Our food, and the food of other diners was beautiful. The chowder bowl was flavorless! I seldom add salt or pepper... to my food but I couldn't seem to add enough to make it taste good. Their drinks are cute, and they have a large beer selection on tap. The staff was friendly!! Go for the view, drinks, and atmosphere, skip the chowder.

The Pier and Chowder House is at the beginning of Point Arena, which is a little coastal town on Highway 1 with a population of 453. It's located 129 miles north of San Francisco. On our recent visit I had grilled Salmon, topped with raspberries plus vegetables and mashed potatoes. And discovered I don't like raspberries on my fish. Terry had battered cod with onion rings. The food was good and service was great. There are great views of the ocean and pier from the restaurant which is on the second floor of the building it's located in. They also have patio where you can sit and eat or just drink. It's a fun place to visit.
Steven M — Google review
Glad we stopped here to have dinner. The burgers, fish and linguine were excellent. Great chicken Quesadillas. A must to eat outside on their new deck.
Bigshooter 3 — Google review
The decor is a little run down, some spots have a good view. Staff is nice and helpful. Prices are on the higher end for lunch, but average price for dinner. I had Rock Cod Tacos, my husband had the Scallops, my kids had plain pasta, which can’t get messed up. Tacos were just okay, needed something… maybe spices? Scallops were were also just okay. Tough texture but good flavor.

Rollerville Cafe is a cozy breakfast spot with both indoor and outdoor seating. The coffee is strong and satisfying, and the well-done bacon and fresh sausage patties are highly recommended. While there might be a bit of a wait during busy times, the friendly staff makes it worth it. The chicken fried steak breakfast is a popular choice, served with flavorful hash browns.
The BEST Biscuits & Gravy I have ever had in my life (I am 58yrs old)!!!!! Very friendly staff and great service. I also had the special - Eggs Benedict with crab cakes (see pic). Excellent hollandaise sauce; creamy with the perfect amount of lemon tang. The eggs were poached perfectly. As good as any upscale restaurant could do. We will definitely eat here the next time we come to the area.

Comfort food. Big portions. I had the Country version of biscuits with sausage gravy (egg and sausage were layered on top of the biscuits). Seriously fantastic food right on the coast. I wish we had this up where we live. The pictures are the sausage gravy and biscuits with hash browns and the blueberry pancakes which were also great.

Best Country Fried Steak along with the best biscuits and gravy I have ever had. And I have had many. I also had the chowder, freshly made, a couple of days prior. One of the best i have tried also. It is a small café but definitely worth the time to check it out. Sit outside on the patio. Clean and protected from wind/rain. It will be our go to spot the next time we are in the area. Yummy!

The best fish tacos I’ve ever had. The calamari was cooked perfectly. Clam chowder was perfect. Really worth the stop for lunch. All the locals looked like they came in for lunch. Do yourself a favor and stop in for lunch on the way down or up Highway 1

I liked this place, both the atmosphere and the hearty breakfast food. The only reason I rated the service as three-star was that the food was quite slow to arrive. I'm sympathetic to the difficulties of running a restaurant, but thought I'd give a heads up for those who don't have time for a relaxed breakfast.

Everything is excellent here, but the other day one of the specials was a fish sandwich (cod) called the whaler, and it was SO GOOD! So fresh, on great bread with a cool tartar like sauce. Nothing fancy, but very good Mexican and very good service; we're glad we chose it and would definitely come back.

Super sweet waitstaff and great food. We got fish and chips and a burrito to go. The fish was delicious, with really good seasoned tartar sauce. This was also one of the only places we could find with a bathroom

Staff super friendly, food cooked fast, portions of food are on point.

Excellent fish and chips. Very large portions and not over battered. More fish and less cost will get me to go back again for sure. Very friendly waitress and very attentive with a very pretty smile.

Nice table service but low quality, gristly carne asada and greasy chips. I expect a ‘wet’ burrito to be covered in enchilada sauce and melted cheese, not decorated with 2 tablespoons of regular table salsa. Burrito and A Coke was about $21.

Had Carnitas burrito. Burrito was soupy, mozzarella and lettuce should never be in a burrito! The actual carnitas were good

Nestled in the heart of B Bryan Reserve, The Bird Cafe is a charming spot to unwind and savor delectable dishes. While currently only offering takeout, this restaurant prides itself on top-notch service and an up-to-date menu featuring mouthwatering specials. Guests rave about the perfectly cooked steak, heavenly seared tuna plate, and delightful pork apple pie. The quirky ambiance and friendly staff add to the overall experience, making it an ideal destination for gatherings or celebrations.
What a unique and amazing restaurant! Great and amazing food. Party of seven. Easily made gluten free and dairy free options for our friends. Food was delicious. Waitress was fun, quick, and engaging. Menu changes weekly too. JUST GO!!!! Had carrot, turmeric, basil, roasted pumpkin seed soup and local rockfish along with desert.

The restaurant is only open for pick up so plan ahead! Their website was up to date on their current menu specials. Everything we ordered this evening was packaged perfectly and made with love. The steak was cooked perfectly, roasted corn was spectacular, the seared tuna plate was heavenly and I would highly recommend adding a pork apple pie. Forgive me for the blurry pictures, I started drooling trying to document the fantastic meal that The Bird Cafe prepared for us. Will gladly return!

Once you go through the red curtains it’s a small and cozy dinning room but wow what a big experience! The three course dinner with the goat cheese croquettes was fantastic. I chose the salad (amazing dressing) followed by the Point Arena rock fish with crab relish (I hung out at the pier today and watched the fishermen unload their daily catch what an experience, especially since they ran out of fish but were resupplied just in time by said fishermen having a drink at the bar nextdoor ) I even had pictures of the fish LOL) and lastly the chocolate pot de crème. My server Amanda was ultra attentive and friendly with excellent recommendations. 10 out of 10 recommend. And I even got to regale my dinner mates about my day and showed pics of the fish we all ate 😀👏🏿

Frankie, the kind woman that works there, the food, the ability to have a drink and then walk through a wall- to get to a amazing restaurant is beyond grand. I have eaten three or four times, going again this Friday. Food is constantly fantastic, I have taken my foodie friends from SF they even thought it was great too!! My hats off to the chief and to the very kind people that work at "The Bird Cafe" also the bread is made around the block, you be crazy not to try it.

Celebrated a friend’s bachelorette here and have no complaints ! The place is quirky, the staff is friendly, and you can tell they really want you take pride in what they cook. The portions were large enough that you definitely will not leave hungry- but it was also sooo delicious !! The menu changes but at the time , we had a really delicious soup and lamb, with the chocolate pot de creme. And they were so nice . Just a heads up, it’s cash only but there’s an atm close by !

The food is absolutely amazing. My husband said the sea bass was the best fish dish he's ever had. My pork was super moist and flavorful. My soup was great and both desserts were delicious.

The prix fixe menu is beautifully calculated so that virtually all dining preferences are catered for. The food is fabulous, and the wine list versatile and appropriate to the cuisine. We were especially grateful to the proprietors for finding a way for us to have a wonderful dinner and still get to a concert at 7:30. A truly memorable experience.

Wonderful gem up the Mendocino Coast with amazing food and equally impressive service. I was staying in town for a week and was shocked to find this quality of food in a place as small as Point Arena (especially after working at upscale restaurants in San Francisco and abroad). Bird Cafe is definitely worth the stop if passing through the area and is an absolutely staple if staying in town. I ate at 10+ restaurants while visiting, and only 2-3 tasted as good. It's also surprisingly affordable.
