The cafe serves delicious cabinet food and homemade baking, providing a variety of options for breakfast and lunch. Comfortable space to relax with great comfort food. Cheerful staff. Smiling, happy service can go a long way, enjoying free valuable time.

This was a beautiful looking cafe with a great menu selection. Unfortunately though, we only received one meal as they forgot about the other which was a shame. They did, however, offer a replacement meal and gave us two free coffee cards as an apology. The food we did receive was OK, although a little greasy, but the coffees were yummy. They had good booster seats for my little one to sit in, but unfortunately, no baby changing facilities. I would like to try this cafe again when I'm next in the area to give it a 2nd chance. The staff were really friendly and they had a nice seating area out the back too.
Donna P — Google review
A good local cafe. Heaps of options in the cabinet and on their menu. Ordered large flat whites and had the brioche French toast as well as the tomato and ham quiche from the cabinet. Referred by a local and they didn’t disappoint.
Chantal M — Google review
Absolutely loved our meals on my birthday in April. My daughter and I had a combination of creamy mushrooms and chicken cream cheese quiche? Finished off with beautiful coffees and a good ole peice of ginger slice! It was amazing so delicious! Customer service was lovely very friendly! The decor inside is very nice and eye catching! Plenty of room inside and outside seating too!

Super friendly staff, the food was very unique and delicious. Loved the Moroccan chicken. They even offered us extra fries because the chef thought we didnt have enough. Would highly recommend coming to this place.

Great cafe in the center of Whakatane, we had a good breakfast on Easter Monday, we picked from the menu but their cabinet also looked really good, better than your average cafe. The atmosphere is great, with lots of plants inside. The staff was incredibly nice. We forgot our umbrella and noticed it when we were almost back in Auckland, we got in touch with them and they found it and posted it a couple of days later, we were very grateful. We will come back next time we're in Whakatane.

We went on a Sunday morning, and were the first people in the cafe. We ordered two Breakfast 4 U which came out with cold potatoes, cold hard poached eggs, and raw sausages. We told the waiter our sausages were under cooked and they said “sorry about that.”

Visited here on holiday. These are hands down some of the best scones we’ve ever had. highly recommend. A lovely little find. So good we had to go back again!

Stopped in for lunch. Nice range of food in cabinets. We had cheese rolls, cheese club sandwich, custard slice and a coffee shake and hot chocolate. Can't fault any. We came away full up and satisfied. Highly recommend. That staff were lovely and the cafe has a good indoor outdoor flow.

The best value and quality hot breakfast and coffee I've had in years. The bacon and eggs on toast were cooked to perfection with a big serving of bacon and only cost $11:20 (yes you read that right). The triple flat white was divine, and the staff were really friendly and happy as well. Thank you.

I recently ordered the Espresso blend from The Bean Coffee Roastery and Café in Whakatane, and I have to say—it’s absolutely fantastic! The aroma when you first open the bag is rich and inviting, and the flavor in the cup is smooth, bold, and perfectly balanced. It has just the right amount of depth and strength without any bitterness, making it an ideal pick-me-up for the day. You can really taste the freshness and quality in every sip—it’s clear that a lot of care goes into their roasting. This has quickly become one of my favorite espressos, and I’ll definitely be reordering from The Bean Café again. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a truly good coffee!

Still great food good place for a quick bite heaps to choose from. All day breakfast is fantastic beaut coffee here too.staff are friendly also best pies are here yum donuts.

Have been a regular for years and have always enjoyed the meals/staff/atmosphere. Under new management steak meals are small compared to previous owners. Thought maybe they were having an off day. But the new reality is meals are literally half the size it used to be, and they seem to have a staffing shortage. Meals take longer and they don't always cater to all the combos shown on the menu. We gave this establishment a couple of chances, to see if things would improve. Sad but lucky we have other options.
Smokey-OPEO 3 — Google review
Passing through from Tauranga to Gisborne and stopped with grandchildren but I wont be returning here again. Ignored at the counter, waited ages to be served even though I was noticed by several people. Unhelpful girl on checkout, like she was annoyed to have to serve me. Food looked like it had been cooked and standing for ages. Sauce bottle lid all covered in dried tomato sauce, chairs covered in bird poo that had been there so long I couldn't even pick it off to sit down. Granddaughter found two hairs in her food, one in the chips and the other in the batter on her chicken. Returned the plate to same girl on checkout - dont think she believed me, I had to physically pull it out of the coating to show her. No apologies, no remorse from her.
Susan S — Google review
The place was dirty and empty. The tables had food on them I asked for a cloth to wipe our table and got told she would come do it. The cloth she used on it was filthy...no spray. Flicked everything on the floor. The other tables were left dirty, she went out the back to gossip to the other 2 people out there. Customer service was non existent. I would have said something there and then but my husband complains that I embarrass him
Debb C — Google review
If I could give use no stars then I would. Your food standards gone down, prices are shot up and the atmosphere is not the best since the old owners are gone. I DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL
Shyz — Google review
Stopped by from gisborne, as the last few times we've been was super good.. 8 months later and complete turn around! The guy behind the counter was not at all impressed to be there, rude and angry with other staff and didnt know whos coffe belong to which table.Eggs were well over cooked!! And the toast was bread!! Not toasted at all. I don't think we'll be stopping in again. Wouldn't recommend. 👎🙅‍♀️🚫
Shantel H — Google review
Service not the greatest place has goan down hill since the old owners where there you order food then they decided to stand around an just talk ordered 2 lamb chops 1 medium an 1 well done they screwed that up by not doing what was asked wouldn't go here anymore miss the old owners
Frost H — Google review
It's OK for most but I didn't like the presentation and the toughness of the steak. It would be nice if q salad was served with the meal like the Taneatua and Richard Street bake house do. Customer service is always great tho

I visited Cafe Awa this morning for breakfast before a fishing trip and was warmly greeted by the friendly staff. I ordered two eggs Benedict with bacon, a cappuccino (which was beautifully frothy and made to the perfect temperature), and a tea. The breakfast was delicious and great value for money. The cafe was also very clean and tidy. I would highly recommend Cafe Awa to anyone visiting the area as the staff are exceptional.

Consistently good food. We’ve been here multiple times, every meal and drink has tasted great. An excellent (big) awa breakfast, the scones are so moist, and the mango sunrise smoothie (DF) was so yum. The staff are always nice too. Highly recommend!

Cute cafe attached to the Awa Motel we stayed at. Friendly service, yummy meals, generous portion size, plenty of options including vegetarian. Recommend dining in for breaky if you're staying at the motel.

Food bland and barely warm. Kitchen staff mainly a older woman stared at us and we felt like we were not welcomed. Service was ok but coffee was really good

Amazing Cafe Awa!! Blown away by the outstanding service, mouth watering food and unbelievable value. Corn fritters were next level good and the halloumi, salad, and dressing were just the cherries on top. The Awa Breakfast was a beast of a brekky - everything on the plate was top notch delicious. Iced mochas were perfect too. Trust me when I say I’ll be coming back to Whakatāne for Cafe Awa - It’s just that good.

On my second visit to Javaman Cafe, two years after my initial experience, I was delighted to find that they were just as impressive as I remembered. The beverages, including coffee, chai, and caramel milkshake, were all excellent. The pulled pork burger stood out with its unique and delectable flavors. The staff members were exceptionally friendly, accommodating, and courteous. Additionally, the cleanliness of the bathrooms was worth noting.
Absolutely delicious food. Super friendly staff. A inviting atmosphere. We will definitely be visiting The Strant Cafe soon🥰

I came on a rainy day not much people out, service was super lovely!!! Clean and warm atmosphere I ordered the omelette with salmon served with two bread & A burger with buttermilk chicken served with fries and fresh sauce. So thank you so very much :)

Horrific, and that's without even being a customer! The (new?) staff have serious ANGER issues. Was outside waiting (for something else) and there was shouting and screaming inside, I poked head inside and staff were arguing. 10 seconds later stuff was being thrown around and staff from next-door nail place and passers-by came to see what comotion and swearing was about. AVOID. Appears new owners have taken as all new staff in there. Note, the business responded to review stating they were "closed" that I "misunderstood" and there was "unrelated" activity, see photo taken AFTER their incident at 1446 with open windows, door and signs all outside. . . . .

My second time at Javaman, two years after the first visit, and still awesome. Glad to see they are still as awesome as I remember. The coffee, chai and caramel milkshake we had was really good. The pulled pork burger was really interesting and delicious. Definitely something different in a good way. Staff was really friendly, helpful and polite. Bathrooms was also clean and tidy. Definitely a great place to stop

I had a lovely Vietnamese pork bun at Javaman today - delicious pulled pork with fresh herbs and chilli in a bun. The crispy hand-made fries were amazing too. My only complaint is that I’m a slow eater and it was such a generous portion it took me a long time to eat! I’m still full now :)

I recently stopped by The Quay Cafe/Licensed Restaurant for a quick coffee and although I didn't try the food myself, it all looked fantastic based on what others were eating. The staff was friendly and the bathroom was clean. Despite being quite busy, there was plenty of seating available. While the prices may be a little high, many feel that it's worth it as the serving sizes are larger than expected.
Delicious eggs benny! I was in Ōhope for 3 days and found myself stopping for coffee and getting on with my day so quickly because the baristas are top notch! Big thank you to the lovely girls who served me, they made me feel comfortable and well caffeinated, that always means a lot to me.

Scrambled eggs was slightly overcooked than what I like but it is definitely my go to breakfast place around town!! Love their coffee and the workers are so nice too!
Ilayda E — Google review
The location was beautiful and the atmosphere was nice, but unfortunately the food didn’t quite meet our expectations. The pork slider had a very strong sauce that overpowered the natural flavour of the meat. The Caesar salad also wasn’t to our taste, so I ended up not finishing it. The chicken burger seemed fine, though the kids didn’t enjoy the salad as the dressing was quite strong. The chips were good. We also ordered three “MOST” drinks (listed as $5 each) but received only $2 change from a $20 note. It wasn’t a big deal, so we just let it go, but it was a little disappointing. Overall, it slightly affected our Ohope trip experience. The place has potential, and hope the taste will get better.

I was very disappointed with the light lunch I had here on Monday. I had a salmon bagel. The salmon was very salty and rest of the filling was not good. I also had a iced coffee and adked to have just a little ice. The glass was fill of big chunks of ice and not much else. I couldn't finish drink it. Very disappointing. I've never struck disappointing visit to any cafe before.
Jenny M — Google review
Oh wow what a disappointment. We came in for a little brunch. What we paid and what we got were far apart in value and quality. Kids got kids menu fish and chips $34 for two… was a bowl of chips and a TINY piece of fish that smelt very strong ( that old fish kind of smell) yuck, no surprises the kids didn’t touch it. So really it was an overpriced bowl of fries… I got soggy squid and a small salad $26, and hubby got $24 “special” mince on toast - far from anything special… Very disappointing waste of money the kind you wish you never decided to go spend… $102 for a very disappointing brunch. Obviously only paying for the location here.
Nina — Google review
Nice to be able to sit inside and outside. I had the mince on toast, and it was only just cooked, coming out looking as though it could do with more time in the pan. More cooking would have enriched the flavour.
Andy C — Google review
Brought a thick shake to take away and they charged an extra 50 cents to do that. Nothing on the board said they would charge extra to take it away. Also very small, the smallest I've every had in my life. Would never buy one here again.

I had the crispy chicken Sammie, for $24 it wasn't worth it. The chicken was just a schnitzel made it look cheap, I was expecting more, the sandwich itself was tasteless needed like a chutney or sweet chilli sauce in it. The only thing that was good was the chips with aioli and flat white.

Popped in today for the first time and what an enjoyable experience this morning. I had an apple and rhubarb muffin with a flat white. My friend had a chicken Sammie with a mocha. Just wish I could have fit in a piece of the Banoffee pie which looked so incrediblly good. Lovely Cafe, very impressed. Cheers for a great morning tea. Wendy.

All round disappointed for the money we spent. Service was avg! I could only taste vinegar throughout the lite breakfast from the poached eggs. Ordered french toast but pancakes came out and paid extra for a triple shot mocha, nothing extra about it.. was basically a milky flat white. 3 breakfasts and 3 drinks for $104.

We visited Poppy's recently during a family weekend get together. Our visit began with an introduction to Whakatane by the owner and explained how they had a New coffee machine so if we were after one they were more than willing to oblige but that there could be a bit of a wait due to live teething issues accident. The staff were on hand very smartly to clean and clear up the mess left behind by any tables and to answer our questions about the place and the art fixtures hanging on the walls. They were just amazing in their response and caring attitude. Meantime the rest of us enjoyed our coffees and the beautifully presented brunch meals. The brunch menu was extensive and with a good range of options, some rarely available elsewhere such as lambs fry and bacon - my choice and it was divine. we were served by the owner who was very friendly and efficient .And other staff were clearing and wiping tables down after customers had left the tables . The place was spotless and had lovely paintings round the fairly new painted walls. The down side was the length of time before we got our coffee's but they were worth waiting for as excellent The cafe has some lovely New Zealand landscape photographs and pictures to add to the ambiance. I, and my family, can highly recommend Poppy's Cafe for their food selection, service and presentation; for their coffee and especially for their well trained, efficient and caring staff.

Great place to have a coffee that’s not overly expensive. A large is $6.80 and a small is $5.00. Very friendly staff and great atmosphere. I recommend coming here earlier in the day before it gets too busy. Around 10-11 there are usually no tables available as it gets busy. The owner also used to live in Switzerland which was a nice surprise.

A lovely spacious cafe with a good menu selection. We only had coffee and cabinet food, which were both yummy. Staff were pleasant and friendly. Good highchairs, but unfortunately, another cafe without baby changing facilities (we visited on 15/09/24), which was very frustrating when they cater for kids with their own menu and highchairs. I had to change my baby on the backseat of the car. We have since been informed that a baby change facility has been installed and look forward to trying the new facilities when we next visit.

My father ordered french toast, which included two pieces of bread and a few berries for $27. Staff never smiled, spent over $100 for bfast. More than auckland prices. Have been there a few times now but will try other cafes now.

Excellent coffee and food. Toasties and lamb burgers were sublime.

French toast was the best I've ever had. Husband had a huge omelette which he really enjoyed. Thanks everyone, we will return

Visited your cafe last Friday, had a sausage roll, it was not fresh, I couldn’t even cut the base, I asked the lady who delivered my hot chocolate that I wanted to return it as it was unbeatable, she said it was not her department but took it anyway, I said I would have a cheese scone,, which was very dense, not light and fluffy like a scone should be, we all agreed the food was very average

Columbus Coffee is a family-friendly cafe with highchairs and coloring books for kids. They offer a variety of gluten-free options, including savory dishes, cakes, and beverages. The staff is known for their excellent service and accommodating attitude towards dietary restrictions. Customers appreciate the delicious food and well-made coffee at this location. Despite some minor feedback on specific items like the savoury scone, overall, visitors enjoy the pleasant outdoor seating and friendly atmosphere.
I loved the food, service everything, I've been there more than once, I love how the staff are so friendly and kind after I finished my meal it left me wanting more sooo delicious, everytime I go there I always leave happy and satisfied, I love going with my family, Columbus has helped us create new memories....out of all the cafes in the world Columbus will always be my favorite, thank you to all the staff members and the manger

I got iced latte $8.1. Poor taste and not cold enough. Better to buy a can coffee. Cheaper and tastier

Came in for coffee at 2.30 Saturday afternoon. Staff were very unfriendly and seemed annoyed that she had to serve us. Food and coffee ok but extremely poor attitude of server.

Coffee 5/5 Staff and service 5/5 Savoury scone 3/5 (was a bit doughy) 2x butters with scone 5/5 (most places only give you one pat) Location 5/5 I enjoyed sitting outside. Even though the main road is very close the traffic noise wasn't deafening. Staff were very friendly. I'd go back but would choose something other than a scone next time.

absolutely love this place it's our go to when we come from Tauranga. good kai, great team, great service. I had the rosti stack and a berry smoothie I enjoyed it but the tropical one wins hands down. the coffee here is made beautifully. definately recommend 👌

Awesome coffee and the best muffin ever with friendly and welcoming service. We will be recommending our guests to bring the kids out to see the new play space and outdoor area, watch the planes and enjoy the delicious food and coffee.

Rere Espresso is a hidden gem! The coffee is a must have and Jennie's hot chocolate is nothing short of perfection. Rich, creamy, and bursting with flavour, it's easily the best hot chocolate I've ever had. The attentive and engaging service by both Jennie and Larni is genuine and has a whanau feel to it. Whether you're waiting for a flight, looking for a cozy spot to relax with a book, catch up with friends, or simply enjoy a delicious treat, Rere cafe is the place to be. I can't recommend it enough!

Finally visited today with my colleague - food and drinks selection is great. We both had toasted ham and cheese rolls which were phenomenal. The almond croissant was so delicious - a perfect treat. The drinks were made to perfection - we will be back for sure. Manaakitanga is second to none - lovely and helpful staff who couldnt do enough for us.
