Mountain peak
Schauinsland, one of the highest mountains in the Black Forest, is a popular destination near Freiburg. Visitors can easily reach the summit by taking the Schauinslandbahn cable car, which offers stunning panoramic views over Freiburg, the Vosges Mountains, and the Alps. At 1,219 meters high, the summit station also features a 31-meter-tall lookout tower known as Eugen-Keidel tower.
Beutiful area to walk! A must do place for hikes for those that are visiting Freiburg or the area and locals alike!
Jason H — Google review
Had a lovely visit to Schauinsland last week. Because of a temperature inversion, we got lucky and could see the Alps! Great views from the tower.
Norma K — Google review
The view from cable car is stunning and breathtaking. But the kids playground and the tower were closed for some reason
Ekaterina C — Google review
Lovely location, fantastic view from the tower - which is now open again. Great walking in the area. Wilder than Feldberg, if not quite as high. Would highly recommend getting the cable car to enhance the experience. Well worth the ride - great way of experiencing the wild landscape.
Charlotte G — Google review
One of the best views in the black forest in my opinion. It is quite easy to arrive by public transport from Freiburg, and there are many trails to hike and even a small lake behind the mountain. The cable car is an easy and fun way to get to the top. When I visited the tower was closed, which is a shame but still amazing views all around.
Tal B — Google review
Great landmark for hiking. Bring your book as well as a drink. Sit at the top and relax. You’ll have an amazing view of the valley. Super beautiful paths for walk. If you have a semester ticket or a regional ticket, you’ll get a discount for the cable car.
Amir F — Google review
Cable car pulls you to the top of the mountain and rest of the way is hiking. There is a red line for steep hike, whereas a green line for easygoers. We took the red line to the summit. Incredible views of the black Forest and the hike was super nice through the thick pine forest. Highly recommended.
Sarani B — Google review
Nice place, decent fun experience with the cable car up. Scenery was nice but not amazing. It is something different for people who want to get away from the city. The ease of reaching here through public transport is a great plus point too.

Schwabentor is a famous sight in Freiburg, known for being one of the gates in the city wall during medieval times. The Old Town features little creeks flowing through its streets, providing a refreshing experience and improving the climate. Located south of Freiburg is the Black Forest, renowned for its dense forests and iconic Black Forest cherry cake.
Freiburg has two surviving medieval city gates: Martinstor and Schwabentor, both originally part of the city's 13th-century fortifications. Martinstor, the older of the two, was significantly modified in the early 1900s with Neo-Gothic additions that gave it its current height and clock tower. Schwabentor was similarly enlarged in the 20th century. It features a mural depicting a Swabian merchant who, according to legend, tried to buy Freiburg with sacks of salt.
Kent W — Google review
One of the gates of the old town. Very beautiful and very nicely restored. An interesting old-new contrast is given by the tram line that passes through the arch of the gate, on which modern trams pass.
Paul C — Google review
A very beautiful avenue full of clothing, food, cosmetics shops, a very special clock building, part of the entrance gates to the city
איל א — Google review
A very beautiful monument, being one of the only 2 remaining entrences in the Old Frieburg Citadel, along with Martinstor.
Codrin G — Google review
Beautiful architecture. Worth the walk. Besodes, you can find a great bakery below the gate. You can find a good variety of sandwiches and sweet breads. Perfect spot for a photo and snack pause ⏸️!!
Daniel G — Google review
The Schwabentor is one of the only two remaining old city entrances of the fortified city of Freiburg. It is a beautiful tower with a special architecture that lets you into the city center. From here you can walk into the center to all the shopping streets. It is a beautiful building with the painting that depicts the legend of Schwaben. With its merchant carrying barrels full of money to buy the city of Freiburg. The idea was not only absurd but even funnier when they found out his wife secretly took the money and replaced it with sand and stones 😂
Nikita N — Google review
Nice gate that leads to the hill on the edge of the city with many walking and hiking paths. Its in good condition and a main sight in the city.

The Freiburg Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady, is a stunning example of Gothic architecture located in the heart of Freiburg's old town. The cathedral features a square tower that offers panoramic views of the picturesque Black Forest.
The market was absolutely perfect! The atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming, filled with lively stalls and an amazing variety of products. It was a pleasure just to walk around, surrounded by wonderful scents and the energy of a bustling market. What really stood out to me was the friendliness of the vendors – every interaction was warm and pleasant, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours exploring, tasting, and soaking up the local culture. Truly a must-visit!
Barak W — Google review
A large and very impressive place, with beautiful interior architecture. The main hall is stunning and worth the visit. However, the climb to the top is not particularly special. Once you reach the upper level, you can pay extra to go a bit higher, but it’s unnecessary and not worth the money. The stairs are narrow, making it extremely difficult to pass when people are coming in the opposite direction — the same problem on the way down. You can also see the bell up close, but be aware that the sound is deafening.
Yoav A — Google review
Freiburg Cathedral is absolutely beautiful, full of incredible details everywhere you look. The architecture is stunning. Every corner of the cathedral shows amazing craftsmanship. It’s truly a must-see! ✨
Jessica — Google review
It's free to visit no entry fee needed. Loved the tinted glasswork and the atmosphere. Very peaceful as other churches around. What catches the eye is the architecture. Worth a visit.
Siddhartha A — Google review
Cathedral’s history started being Romanesque church around 1200, transitioned to Gothic structure in 1250s (inspired by nearby Strasbourg cathedral) with West Tower being completed in 1330. While the city was heavily bombed in WW2, cathedral survived with minor damage (likely due to being notable landmark for Allied Bombers).
Mike Z — Google review
Beautiful red colored cathedral located on the edge of the Black Forest. It shines even in cloudy weather.

Nice cathedral, beautiful Gothic architecture. It's obviously a very touristy place, but I think it's worth a visit. I've been there on a weekday but it was still crowded. It's obviously one of the most interesting places to visit in Freiburg.

Art Museums
Nestled in the heart of Freiburg, the Augustiner Museum is a captivating destination for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Housed within a beautifully restored former monastery church, this museum showcases an impressive collection of artworks spanning from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The architectural brilliance of Christoph Mackler has transformed this historic site into a modern gallery that enhances the viewing experience, allowing visitors to appreciate each piece from various perspectives.
This museum was really nice and surprisingly extensive! I was amazed at the very beginning! You get to see some really cool statues and learn about some really interesting history!
Ms. K — Google review
A not very large museum, housed in the building of a former church. In general, you will see religious art. A unique and interesting fact is that there is a small room where you can watch the restoration of some paintings live through the window. There is a small painting exhibition in the attic. On the ground floor is an temporary exhibition with objects from the former German colonies in Africa. If you are not a fan of religious art, you visit it in about an hour.
Paul C — Google review
Excellent museum. Not very big but quite interesting, especially because of the gothic statues and (pseudo) gargoyles that you normally could have admired only from a huge distance on the cathedral tower. You can walk up to them and also see them from above. Similarly they have some beautiful stained glass that you can admire from up close. Apart from these statues and the glass they have a fine collection of medieval paintings and (other) sculptures. Another bonus is their organ, which was played at noon on the Saturday that I visited.
Rob N — Google review
An excellent museum. I truly enjoyed the wonderful artworks on display. The lady at the front desk was very kind and welcoming. However, while visiting the second floor, one of the gallery attendants seemed a bit overly strict. I did not touch any artwork and kept a reasonable distance of about 30 cm, yet she repeatedly said "No, no, no" and followed me around, which I found quite unpleasant. Despite this, I greatly appreciate the museum and the effort put into providing such a remarkable experience.
Stephan — Google review
The museum is set in an old church which has been renovated and converted. Beautiful building with an outstanding roof showing the ancient oak beams. All the pieces are of religious significance and all beautifully maintained and preserved. Unfortunately the staff watched you like a hawk which really put you on edge...
Cliff B — Google review
Fantastic museum in an impressively renovated building with beautiful art from the middle ages to 19th century.
Wouter B — Google review
A must-visit musuem while in Freiburg! Beautiful museum full of amazing art pieces from the medieval ages set in an ancient monastery. All the descriptions are well written and the museum is organized well. Much of the museum has been well preserved and restored, and there is a lot of construction on the exterior but it very minimally affected my experience inside. Great addition of an elevator for those handicapped or not capable of going up many flights of stairs. The special exhibits on the bottom of the museum and top were very engaging and well curated.
Let's H — Google review
During my visit on a Saturday there was supposedly a fire alarm and all guests had to be removed from the building. The Museum closed down much earlier than it was supposed to. We couldn't get back inside later to complete our visit, no money back or a voucher either. Many guests didn't even manage to go to the first floor. I missed the third floor, which I really wanted to see. This has never happened to me before in a museum. An unpleasant experience.

Nestled in the heart of Freiburg, Seepark Freiburg is a beloved urban oasis that offers a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Spanning an impressive 35 hectares, this park features a picturesque swimming lake surrounded by vibrant greenery, making it perfect for leisurely strolls or picnics. Visitors can explore beautifully designed gardens, including a serene Japanese garden and an enchanting rose garden. The park is not just about relaxation; it's also brimming with activities for all ages!
Even though it’s an artificial lake, it’s very beautiful and tranquil! The surroundings and the environment are all very nice. It was a mice summer day, there were a few people swimming in the lake, as well as ducks, fish and turtles. It is indeed a very busy lake😀. The view from the tower is wonderful. We walked around the lake and had a very nice evening.

A nice place for a picnic and swimming. It's also a good place taking a stroll or even running. The scenery is also good.
M. S — Google review
It’s a massive park around a Great Lake of Flückiger See, the lake is very clean, people enjoy sun bathing and relaxing while some other enjoy swimming, or even other water sports. It’s filled with sport activities around the park, you can find a restaurant, and toilets around this park. Ducks, geese, turtles and fishes are clearly visible. Benches all around so you can rest and enjoy the view. It’s easily accessible by public transportation.
MAnA M — Google review
Central Park? Nice try… but have you been to Seepark? Right next to the city center, yet it feels like another world. Sunsets over the lake, chilled beer in hand, friends on the grass, ducks doing their thing, pure Freiburg magic. Seepark isn’t just a park, it’s a lifestyle. Come once, stay for hours. Come twice, fall in love.
M. A — Google review
great place to chill and enjoy summer. it's like a paradise, where you will experience peace and joy with family and friends..here you can swim, have picnic, grill, dine in the resto, enjoy the view, play with ducks and tortoises, dive for aome people, sun bathing even naked, or even just read a book by the bench or by the green grasses...so many possibilities to enjoy here...best thing is that it's free..
Loona_t — Google review
I love this park. It's a great space to run around and/or do a workout at the outdoor gym and/or have a swim in the lake. There are also sports facilities like a 400m track, a soccer field and swimming baths adjacent to/within the park. There is also a rolling hills section when you can take your trail/mountain bike on. If it's your rest day, there are great spaces to just sit or lay and people-watch or bird-watch from the grassy lawns or the numerous towers. Groups of people come here to toss a ball around or play spikes all. Couples just doing romantic stuff like picnicking and watching the sunset are also common. There is a nice boardwalk that arcs over the lake which is also a great sundowner observation spot. You can lock a padlock on the balustrade for goodluck for your relationship haha. Sometimes you may also see some people rope swing from the boardwalk into the water. Pay close attention to the water life. You will find fish, birds and TURTLES. If you're hungry after your visit, there are shops a couple hundred meters from the park which are easy and quick to get to.
Michal H — Google review
Nice adventure and mini golf, nice playground, nice place for kayaking , boating and fishing, nice parking. Will cost you 6euro for 3hrs up

Wiwilíbrücke, also known as the Blue Bridge, is a picturesque and iconic spot in Freiburg. Once a tram line connecting different parts of the city, it now serves as a pedestrian and bike bridge. The bridge offers stunning views against a backdrop of mountains and is popular for photography and sunset watching. It has become a symbol of biking in Freiburg, with a bike meter installed to record the number of bikes passing through.
Wiwilibrücke or Bluebridge is a symbol of a Freiburg and one of the best places to watch the Sunset. You can sit down with your friends and chill there. I am so happy that now it’s only serving to bicyles and pedesterians. Ypu will have different views every time😍

The Blue Bridge (Blaue Brücke) in Freiburg im Breisgau is a modern yet striking landmark that spans the Dreisam River. Its unique blue color and sleek design make it stand out, offering a contrast to the historic charm of the surrounding city. The bridge is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, providing scenic views of the river and nearby green spaces. It also serves as a practical connection between different parts of the city, adding to Freiburg’s blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. A great place for a quick stroll or a photo opportunity.
Sunita C — Google review
Wiwilíbrücke otherwise known as Blue Bridge is symbolic post card image of Freiburg. In Past the bridge used to have a tram line connecting two parts of the city. Later, it was removed and only opened for cars. And currently, it is only for pedestrians and bikers. At one end of the Bridge, a bike meter is installed which records, the number of bikes passing through the bridge. As Freiburg is also known as Bike city of Germany, this bridge symbolizes biking. Freiburg Marathon yearly, is hosted over this bridge. From the bridge, the Herz Jesu Kirche, otherwise Stuhlinger church can be seen, which adds scenic characteristics to the Blue color bridge during sunsets, and night.
THE S — Google review
You'll see some people enjoying their time while watching the sunset on top of it, often during spring and summer time. Surely it's a wonderful evening for them. If you love photography, this iconic bridge in Freiburg is worth to be captured.
Susanti D — Google review
South of the modern train station is the Wiwilí Bridge, which, thanks to its blue paintwork, is consequently not called the Red Bridge but the Blue Bridge. The chic building is listed and only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Cars have to find other ways. The bridge is worth a visit and opens the way to many other sights.

Platz der Alten Synagoge is a spacious square in Freiburg, Germany, featuring a monument that marks the location of the former synagogue destroyed during Kristallnacht in 1938. It's a serene place to reflect on Germany's history and ensure such events are never repeated. The square offers a mix of modern and classic architecture, with nearby university vibes adding to its charm.
Well situated place, next to the heart of the town.

Free to walk about. Nice place for kids to run around in the water. Square is pretty big. There are events here from time to time. There is nothing much here aside the sights otherwise. There are places to sit around and enjoy too.

Open space to walk, for kids to play with the fountain....some rallies or group activities are also done here.... Near tram stations and the freiburg hbf...it is a place to stop-by and take a moment to breathe while watching people come and go.. Though i think the city can develop it more.

Mountains
Schlossberg is a popular mountain in Freiburg, offering stunning views of the city's ancient Old Town. It is a favorite spot for locals to relax in the beer garden, dine at the restaurant, and admire the beautiful sunset. The mountain was named after the Zahringen Dukes who built Burghalden Castle there almost 1000 years ago. Today, only ruins of this castle remain.
Beautiful views of the city. Definitely worth the visit, but unless you're fit enough, do yourself a favour and take the Schlossbergbahn from Stadtgarten (take any tram to Europaplatz). Once out of the funicular, there's a flat path with breaks for views - suitable for those with more limited physical ability. For those with the stamina, take the steep climbs up to the tower - the steeper the climb the shorter the route.
Ant P — Google review
Beautiful place! Schlossberg tower is 35mt high and you can join the view of the city from there. Of course to get to the tower, a walk in the forest is recommended.

Good view Nice hike
Ajeesh-Musthafa — Google review
If you enjoy hiking, discovering old cities, walking in forests, cultural visits to old castles, this place is absolutely right for you. A must visit for adventurers who come to Freiburg. There are two ways to go up the mountain; the long paved and slightly inclined road which of course is longer, and the other steep, spiral short way to the peak. I took the shorter one upward and the longer on my way down to enjoy the beauty of both. Up at the highest point you find a historical compass map for the directions and cities inside Germany. On your way up, you’ll pass by 2 telescopes through which you can view any direction you want really close. To use them you’ll need 50 cents or 1 euro coins. There is a nice restaurant with breath taking view where you can enjoy your meal right on the mountain of Schlossberg. Suitable for families, couples, friends and children but with care and caution. Take a lot of photos there and enjoy the nature!

Freiburg has two surviving medieval city gates: Martinstor and Schwabentor, both originally part of the city's 13th-century fortifications. Martinstor, the older of the two, was significantly modified in the early 1900s with Neo-Gothic additions that gave it its current height and clock tower.

Kastaniengarten is a popular beer garden in Freiburg, known for its extensive selection of local and imported beers. Situated on Schlossberg hill, it offers stunning views of the city and is a favorite hangout for beer enthusiasts. The leafy communal tables provide a perfect setting to enjoy beer from the tap, flatbreads, and sausages while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
We ♡ it ! Friendly/welcoming service, amazing view over Freiburg. Despite little rain/wind it was definitly worth a visit. We are looking for to come back to enjoy the mouthwatering food too next time !

Spent two days in Freiburg with friends. The beer was really great, the food not so much. I ordered a tarte flambée and it was just as good as a frozen one made at home. The view was great though. We‘ll definetly go back there again, but just for drinks.
Hyntie C — Google review
Amazing view over Freiburg! The food was just okay, not the highlight, but the setting makes up for it. Walking up the hill feels totally worth it once you sit down with a cold beer and take in the scenery. A great spot to relax, especially on a sunny evening. Definitely come here more for the atmosphere and the view than for the food.
Ankita R — Google review
Amazing views and decent fries (a bit stale)! The issue is we ordered a pilsner and a radler and we couldn’t taste the lemonade in the radler at all. It was honestly hard to detect a difference between the radler and the pilsner so I’m almost sure they made a mistake but they gave me the beer and said it was a radler. I also didn’t see lemonade get poured in the glass. That plus the stale fries and slightly steep prices means I would only come back for the incredible views!
Arden — Google review
The views are fantastic! The food, good. The beer, better.

Restaurant
Restaurant Eichhalde, located on the outskirts of the city, offers a modern dining experience with a variety of fresh and creatively prepared pasta dishes, as well as specialties like goose liver terrine and venison loin. The establishment has quickly gained recognition as a premier Italian fine dining restaurant in the region. Chef Federico Campolattano's culinary expertise showcases authentic southern Italian cuisine with a focus on natural flavors and high-quality ingredients.
Federico Campolattano established himself as the premier Italien fine dining restaurant of the region in record time. His food is outstanding and would do any Italien city honour. His exquisit art to focus on the natural taste of the best possible ingredients is masterly excecuted, he does not compromise to cater for German or any other tastes. He trained with the best chefs in Italy and graces Freiburg with his totally authentic southern Italien cuisine, full of surprises and innovation. The service lead by Valentina Tito is exceptional. A new wine list features many treasures of Italien Wines, from outstanding and some not so well known wineries. Gault Millau rewards the Eichhalde with three red cooking hats! Wow! In March 2023 the Eichhalde was rewarded with a Michelin Star, just as we predicted! Heartfelt congratulations! Christian Bau, one of the most celebrated 3-Star Michelin Chefs in Germany just called the Eichalde „the biggest culinary surprise of the year“. The dinner left him speechless many times, he wrote in an article for Die Welt newspaper.

Eichhalde is a rare beautiful experience of all our culinary experiences of recent years, it stands out as something truly unforgettable. It’s almost magical: to be moved, heart and soul transported to Naples, with the scents and flavors of Campania unfolding on the plate—all while nestled in the quiet, leafy streets of Freiburg. Federico and Valentina have brought to life a unique and sincere culinary vision, one that steers clear of passing trends like nouvelle cuisine or Germanic-fusion influences. What you find here is the essence of Campania’s tradition, reinterpreted with finesse, passion, and deep reverence. From the very first bite to the final, comforting touch, each dish tells its own story. Every glass of wine, carefully chosen, enhances and completes the journey. The welcome is warm and genuine—you feel embraced, as if dining in the home of dear friends, all while enjoying cuisine of the highest standard. A place to be discovered, cherished, recommended

The service is very friendly, attentive but not overbearing. They are very helpful and willing in accommodating dietary restrictions. The food is a great mixture of northern Italian classical ingredients with the chefs innovative approach. The wine list is a great selection of Italian wines from across the country. This has been the best dining experience I have had in Freiburg for a long time. The combination of outstanding food and service in a beautifully thought out ambience is refreshing and I hope this place will stay in business for a long, long time!

Schlossberg is a forested hill in Germany, offering various ways to reach the top, including a funicular railway and hiking paths. The hill stands at 473 meters and is an extension of the Black Forest, providing ample shade for visitors on hot summer days. While it's great for hiking, some visitors have noted that better color-coded paths and more English information would be beneficial. At the top, there's an observation tower with stunning views of the surrounding area.
Perfect view of the city. A must-visit in Freiburg
Ran S — Google review
We enjoyed our walk up to the top and climped the tower for a brow across the mountains to the snowfields. Worth the walk but it is a trek and will take you a good hour and a half (or so) up and back with the top of the tower included.
Fi S — Google review
Great place for a bit of hiking but paths should be better colour coded and the place lacks of public maps or information in English. We had been stopped by at least 10 walkers for advice and luckily we had a downloadable map on our mobile to help. Unfortunately the tower is closed until autumn. Some places seriously needs cleaning and tidying up as we have seen lots of discarded dirty shoes, clothes, needles and bottles just above the station where the views would have been excellent (but we were scared to walk across on that level and turned back to find another path). Lovely and clean places to rest on the other side and around the cross.
Zizzygirl — Google review
After climbing up we were rather disappointed to find the tower closed and encased in a large fence. Some of the views on the way up were nice and the paths were well maintained but the summit is full of trees and I personally think it isn't worthwhile, the view is better from some of the other points on the hill.

The food and dishes are delicious serve and deco nicely and with a reasonable quantity of food that at the beginning can seemed it's not enough but believe me it is! The menu has a variety of food but as a suggestion will be nice to have more vegetarian options. Highly recommended worth a visit for a great culinary experience .

We stopped by for lunch after hearing some good things, and overall, it was a pleasant enough experience. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere was cosy. I tried a few of the soups, they were definitely the highlight for me. Each had a distinct flavour and the seasoning was spot on. The lentil soup, in particular, was lovely warm and comforting. That said, I wasn’t completely blown away by the rest of the meal. The mains lacked a bit of depth and could’ve done with more creativity. It felt a little on the safe side🤝 Still, the service was great and the team did their best to make us feel at home. I might come back for a bowl of soup and a quiet afternoon, but I’d probably try somewhere else for something more memorable. Thanks.

My experience here was very brief. I came on a Wednesday, 1,5 hours before closing time, for a piece of schwarzwald kuchen and a beer. Dattler was recommended to me for one of the best places to get schwarzwald kuchen. As I arrived, the waiter was very accommodating and friendly. Throughout the night the various staff have been very polite and professional. I sat outside, next to wall which overlooks the city including the cathedral. This view is probably one of the best in the city. It started to rain while I was enjoying my cake and beer and the staff lowered screens between me and the view to protect me from the rain but not low enough to block my view (very considerate). I had been waiting to try this cake for a long time so my expectations were high. It was really nice but I realised then that I'm not a big cake lover. No fault to the cake, it's just not my preference. I only ordered cake so I don't feel like I can give a fair rating for the food, only the service and atmosphere.
Michal H — Google review
Great view of the city. Nice place to get the black forest cake with coffee or have a cocktail. Their meals are quite expensive though. We were able to get a seat without having a reservation. Would recommend after taking the cable car up Schlossberg.

This restaurant of fine German dining has its act together. Definitely worth the experience. Service was attentive and courteous. The ambience is amazing, wonderful view of Freiburg. If possible schedule your reservation 1-1.5 hour before sunset if the weather is right you will not be disappointed. The food flavor was excellent and the meat tender with just right medium preparation. Many compliments to the chef for near perfection! One of the best for sure. Romantic and quiet indoors, open air and cozy outdoors.

Absolutely good experience. I have been here maybe 15 years before but I was well impressed. I admit that we were lucky and got one of the best tables at the terrace. I recommend booking in advance because the terrace was fully booked on Saturday already a day before. The place is well kept but not too formal, the obvious highlight is the terrace with the amazing view on the city. The service was really good, fast and attentive without being intrusive, and at least some waiters speak English. The food is also quite good, quite a twist on typical German foods. Also a wide range if vegetarian and vegan options is available. Prices are in line with the quality, medium-upper range. Will be happy to come back in the future.

There are a lot of customers in this restaurant, so you need to wait. At that time, I couldn't see the Black Forest cake at the scene, and I was very disappointed. But the manager told me that he would take out the finished cake soon, and he would keep a piece for me. So in the end I ate the Black Forest Cake and it was delicious. The cream had a strong cherry wine flavor and the cake was soft.

Historical Merchants' Hall is a distinctive 14th-century landmark in Freiburg, Germany. This crimson Renaissance building features grand halls, a courtyard for open-air events, beautiful bay windows, glazed patterned tiles, and crow-stepped gables. It is complemented by the nearby Minster and medieval gates like the red sandstone Schwabentor and the Gothic-roofed Martinstor, adding to the city's historic character.
This building is situated in the historic old town, adjacent to the cathedral. Erected circa the 1400s (cmiiw), it remains remarkably well-preserved to this day. Our visit to this edifice was occasioned by a conference. The interior is splendid, featuring bright illumination and retaining an exquisite elegance with its antique charm.

This striking historic building captures attention with its vibrant red façade, intricate gold detailing, and elegant bay windows. The steep, tiled roof and ornate statues add to its grandeur, while the arched entrances create a sense of openness and welcome. The overall design beautifully blends Gothic and Renaissance elements, offering a strong sense of character and historical richness. Easily the most visually striking building in the Münsterplatz.

The Historisches Kaufhaus (Historic Merchants’ Hall) is a Renaissance-era building on Freiburg’s Münsterplatz. Completed in 1530, it served as the city’s administrative and commercial hub, housing customs offices, trade rooms, and storage for goods. The building’s striking deep red façade and richly decorated oriel windows reflect the wealth and civic pride of Freiburg during the height of its trade with the Upper Rhine and Alpine regions. The façade is adorned with coats of arms, decorative sculpture, and four statues of Habsburg emperors—Maximilian I, Charles V, Ferdinand I, and Rudolph II—added in the late 16th century, emphasizing the city's loyalty to the empire.

The first thing you see is the beautiful exterior made of red sandstone atop the small hill in the middle of the surrounding garden. The museum itself has some really interesting artefacts from prehistoric times till late roman times. It is not particularly large but that makes it all the easier to visit. The rooms are well organized in order, and each one has available material botu in German and in English. Because of some special installations oriented to children, it also has some interactive exhibits which can be fun for adults as well!
Marius D — Google review
Quite a small museum We entered for free with the welcome card. I liked how the objects were presented. There is a good content for children. And interactive stations. P.S. Maybe you should lock the rooms which are not meant to be visited by the public or put a paper on the door saying „private“ or have a better sign on the wall how to get to the toilet (in the basement). When I was searching the toilet, I opened about 4 rooms which I was not supposed to (not part of the museum).
Aleksandra — Google review
Small and nice. We came with our teen children and spent about 2 hrs. In many of the rooms there are summaries in English and Spanish. There are a couple of interactive activities. The best is to wear a Roman military costume… those guys we athletes! 100% recommended if you want to know more about the ancient history of the region.
Ale B — Google review
Well displayed small exhibit. Detailed labelling in German, but audio avaiable in English. Easily accessible from altstadt or train station.

We visited the exhibition on a weekday. I'm not really that interested in the kinds of things they present but I must say I was impressed. I really enjoyed learning stuff about all kinds of eras. Really interesting even if you're not that much into all that. There was also a live concert just outside where they played These long bavarian horns. Really fit the atmosohere. I dont know if we were just lucky or if they play more often. Can absolutely recommend for any touristes or visitors :)

Small museum in a beautiful building. The chronological story from early prehistoric mankind to the middle ages is well narrated, with excellently chosen artefacts. They make it very clear how technological evolutions have shaped societies. Two hours well spent. The 7€ ticket provides access to the other city museums as well.

The Schlossbergbahn is a funicular railway in Freiburg that takes visitors up the Schlossberg mountain, offering stunning views of the Black Forest, Rhine River, and the city of Freiburg. The short ride to the top takes less than 3 minutes, where travelers can then explore various hiking trails or visit the Schlossbergturm observation tower with its 153-step climb.
Nice place to go to feel the experience, the prices are very reasonable and it's always available ,we went a group of 6 in a weekend and we had nokproblems to buy tickets and the waiting time.was about 5 min.
Mili M — Google review
Your not taking this Bahn to fasten what else would be a day hike. The walk up is pretty easy and if you happen to need to wait for the next ride to get down, walking was probably faster. Instead your taking this Bahn because of the experience. Unfortunately when we were there, the restaurant on top was closed. Good views from there though. A return ticket was six euros, I would advise to take a one way and walk down.
Michel B — Google review
You can pay for one way or round trip. The ride takes 3 minutes. We did one way. Then you can either walk down (10-15 min) or take the elevator. It takes you up to the restaurant Dattler where you can get some black forest cake and enjoy the view of the city. Would recommend!
R C — Google review
There is one restaurant, next to top station, but it was closed. You can see the city from above view, if you walk to side approximately 600 meters, but it isn’t worth the cabin fee.

An experience that anyone shall take Despite the relevant long time to get on board, in the rush hour, the experience pays back. Especially the castle beauty.

Nice experience if you don't want to hike or you have a kid just like me The train will not take you to the highest spot Accepting cash and cards - there is price for one way and for two way For the two way it was 6 for adults And for i guess less than 6 for free You have to wear mask

A cute experience. This train helps us cross first half of the hill so we can save some energy to climb the next half and the tower on top. The experience of climbing the tower is aust have if you are in the area. Especially on a windy day, you will feel the tower move as you climb up, and finally you'll have a lovely view of the city and surrounding black forest region.

Haus zum Walfisch is a striking red Gothic-style mansion with a rich history dating back to the 16th century. Originally commissioned by Jakob Villinger von Schonenberg, the Grand Treasurer to the Holy Roman Emperor, it has housed notable figures such as Dutch humanist Erasmus and Emperor Ferdinand. The building gained international fame as the setting for Dario Argento's film "Suspiria.
Dario Argento's Suspiria is one of my all time favorite films. When I learned I was getting the opportunity to visit Germany, I wanted to see Haus zum Walfisch because it served as the inspiration for the Tanz Academy in Suspiria. One day, by happenstance, we ended up only a 3 minute walk away and I had the chance to visit. It was so magical and beautiful. You are truly lucky if you get to see and touch this beautiful building.

The Schauinslandbahn is a gondola lift that has been in operation since 1930 and is the longest continuous motion cable car in Germany. It provides easy access to the Schauinsland, one of the highest mountains in the Black Forest and a popular destination near Freiburg. The ride offers great views and a pleasant experience, with not too crowded cars and short wait times.
The price was relatively cheap. I showed my student card and they gave me a discount. It is stated that you can get a discount if you have a Deutschland ticket. But at the beginning i showed it from my app then she rejected it and i dunno why I didn't get any clear explanation. Then i asked another way to get a discount by showing my student card and it just worked. Panorama was nice. Probably a lite version of Switzerland. I would visit this place again someday anyway.

A wonderful experience riding the historic cable car to explore the amazing views of the Black Forrest mountains. There weren't any crowd when we were there during the Easter holidays which is lucky. There is an affordable coffee / drinks vending machine at the foot hill station where you can purchase a nice drink to enjoy for the trip.

At the top there are fabulous 360 degree views of the black forest, with lots of trails to explore. Perched high above Ebringen, the Ruine Schneeburg is a captivating sight visible even from the nearby highway. Dating back to 1312, this castle ruin offers limited historical documentation but still retains sections of its walls and a well. The site provides stunning panoramic views of Schonberg and the surrounding valleys, making it a popular destination for hikers approaching from Ebringen and Hexental.
Burgruine Schneeburg is what remains today of a centuries old castle overlooking Ebringen and Freiburg im Breisgau. While mostly in ruins, a few sections of walls still stand today. Also mostly intact is the well which stands between the two sections of the walls. The ruins also offer breathtaking vista of Schönberg and the valleys around it. There are hike trails which lead to the ruins from Ebringen and Hexental.
Sahil V — Google review
This site is open all the time - no tickets required. We walked to the Ruine Schneeburg from a carpark about 2km down the hill. It was a beautiful scenic walk (mostly uphill) on a dirt road that turns to mud after rain/snow. I would not recommend to walk after it has rained. The ruins themselves are great, but not extensive. It was worth the photos in my opinion :)

Additionally, outdoor enthusiasts can explore mountain biking tracks in the vicinity.
Great views and worth the walk up there. Once you are on the trail it's very easy to get to.

I took quite a strenuous 5km jog/hike from the Black Forest Hostel to get to the turm. The tower stands tall, high up on a hill in the middle of a wooded area. You may cross paths with cyclists and other hikers along the way. You need to climb another 5 or 6 levels to get to the top of the tower. Becareful! There was a wasp nest somewhere ontop when I was there in August! The view is great as you can judge by the pics. If you're going with your partner and want to do the lock thing for goodluck then I guess that's an idea for you (check the pics).

Deisy G — Google review
Fantastic, modest castle home of the Zähringer family. Bertold the III who founded Freiburg as a free city in 1120 lived in this castle. His nephew Bertold V started the Freiburger Münster (cathedral) and was elected emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. However, he declined in order more effectively to continue the Zähringer tradition of protecting the autonomy of communities and cities in their realm, which included Alsace (now a part of France) much of the Black Forest, and large portions of Switzerland. The Zähringers founded Bern in Switzerland and repeatedly protected the freedom of the people against power grabs. They founded numerous other free cities including Fribourg, Switzerland. The first wall of Freiburg from its founding is still visible in Augustiner Platz. Their legacy is impressive given the age in which they lived. The key to the tower is available at the Waldrestaurant/biergarten below.

Amazing view of Freiburg make this restaurant a must for any traveller. It's about 10 minutes drive from town centre. 5 stars for the view alone. On top of that the coffee is about the best you can get in Freiburg, the food is very good and reasonably priced. Service impeccable. Busy place so book for the evening and one more thing to remember is that you need cash as they don't take credit cards. Amazing in this day and age but what can you do. It's not unusual for this part of Germany so you just have to make sure you have enough. Average would be €25 per head for an adult. Highly recommended. The view of the Rhine plain and the Black Forest as well as the view towards the Vosges on the other side makes up for the somewhat steeper climb. The visitor really doesn't need the car. He can leave it on the outskirts of Munzingen and take this short hike comfortably. A climb from the golf club is also possible. The view definitely makes up for it. Hiking area
Schönberg-Gipfel, which translates to "beautiful mountain," is a must-visit destination just southwest of Freiburg's core. It comprises two peaks: the lookout at Schonberg-Gipfel and the castle ruins at Schneeburg, both offering stunning panoramic views. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful hike through forest trails on the east side of the mountain, with well-marked paths leading to points of interest such as the Schonberger Hof and the summit.
Beatiful hiking route with awesome landscapes.

Really nice spot to start with the Schwarzwald

(Translated by Google) Nice little hiking area, with partly wide paths suitable for strollers and bicycle trailers. You can also hike narrow paths where you spend a long time alone. The snow castle offers great views and distant views in all directions. On the Schönberg summit there is the opportunity to enjoy the landscape on benches.

(Translated by Google) Even in the snow, the Schönberg is definitely worth a visit and a hike. Few visitors, so keeping your distance isn't a problem. Everything is well signposted: the Schönberger Hof, the summit, and the Schneeburg ruins. The parking lot above the Berghauser Chapel can be reached from Wittenau or Ebringen, making it easy to access. (Original) Auch im Schnee ist der Schönberg auf jeden Fall ein Besuch, eine Wanderung wert. Wenig Besucher, Abstände sind also kein Problem.

Gewerbekanal is a charming canal in Freiburg, featuring shops and restaurants along its banks. One of its notable attractions is a stone crocodile sculpture created by artist Ole Meinecke, which has been delighting visitors since 2002. The area exudes a relaxing vibe and is often compared to Venice with its picturesque streets and interesting sights. It's definitely a lovely spot not to be missed in the beautiful city of Freiburg.
It’s a sweet little Venice kind of a corner of the beautiful city, with crocodile 🐊 statue in the middle.. the vibe of this corner is very relaxing 😎 definitely you don’t want to miss this beauty 🥰
Kritika M — Google review
The crocodile between Feierling and Himmelsbach cleaning in the commercial canal on the gerberau freiburg was created by the stonemason and artist Ole Meinecke. the work of art made of diorite weighs an impressive 400 kilograms. In 2002 it was bought by the himmelsbach cleaning company in freiburg and since then the stone crocodile has delighted children in particular on a walk through the southern old town. A sign on the railing warns: "Please do not feed". On the wall of the commercial canal Freiburg there is a rhyme: "The crocodile is made of stone - with a wide mouth, but not from the Nile - look out of the commercial stream - look out at the Himmelsbach house - see you and us and think a lot".
