Scenic spot
Yubatake is a central attraction in Kusatsu Onsen, Japan, featuring a man-made pool of geothermal water surrounded by bath houses and traditional inns. This hot water field was created to cool down the piping hot spring water and collect the minerals from it. The site consists of seven wooden slides that help cool the hot spring water, which wells out at a rate of 4,000 liters per minute. Yubatake is also known for its enchanting nighttime illumination.
This is Kusatsu’s famous natural hot spring source area that’s been developed for viewing. The area has a strong boiled egg smell from the sulfur. While impressive during the day, this place truly comes alive and looks much more beautiful at night when the lighting creates a more dramatic atmosphere.
Minwoo K — Google review
Very magical place. Must visiting one as tourist. Lots of bathhouses. Finding parking is little difficult for us as a foreigner. But at the last we found. The whole experience is nice and worthy. I enjoyed at the evening time with the lightings
Sadia O — Google review
It is a beautiful place. The view is awesome at night. It feels so nice to drink in from of this place. You can see a lot of stores here. And there is convenience store too. It is the most beautiful onsen place that I have ever seen in Japan
Ronnie I — Google review
PSA: IT SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS But the view is as beautiful as the pictures make it to be. In fact, I'd say pictures don't do it justice as to how beautiful and lovely the atmosphere actually is. Please go visit, it's just large enough.. not too big where you feel like you can't explore the whole area. Also not too small where you get bored after 30 minutes to an hour.
TatteredAllure — Google review
Kusatsu Onsen is one of the most atmospheric onsen towns we have visited. The highlight was the Yubatake (hot water field) in the town centre. Seeing the steam rise at night was beautiful and calming. The walk along the nearby shopping street was enjoyable, with many small shops and snacks to explore at a relaxed pace. The whole area felt safe, clean and easy to navigate. A wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the onsen town ambience. Highly recommended for both first-time and returning visitors.
Daddydrives — Google review
Very big landmark of this onsen city where surrounded by shops, restaurants, temple and hotels. Also have some spots to do the foot spa (onsen). We can smell the onsen water mineral. Really impressed
Mildthun — Google review
This location is one of the attractions of Japanese hot springs (onsen). It is not far from Osaka. It is very unique. You can enjoy a complimentary foot spa or public hot springs during your visit.

This place is not in everyone list but if you go there you will see hot sulfur water ponds this place is femous for winter season but you can do oneday trip from Tokyo There are some hotels and house you can find from Airbnb website Very small towns if you walk around you can see a small shop for shopping There is a temple and pagoda behind this water pond You have to climb few steps to reach there Very nice plaza surrounding this pond One of the nice place if you are visiting Japan

Nestled in the midst of seasonal foliage, West Riverside open-air bath offers a serene retreat with its hot springs, shrines, and statues. Just a short walk from Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort, this spacious roten-buro style onsen provides a relaxing experience. The water temperature varies by location and is hotter closer to the source. While there are no shower facilities or toiletries provided, visitors can enjoy the warm waters and picturesque surroundings.
Mix bath / Family time is only on Friday from 5:30pm If driving, parking is available across the main road near ski resort. You’ll have to cross the road and walk towards this Onsen. No washing area. Recommended to splash and was with warm water beside the baths. Lovely setting and huge! Take time to enjoy!
Candice K — Google review
Absolutely loved Sainokawara Open Air Onsen – we enjoyed it so much, we went twice in one day! The morning visit was already amazing, but we were pleasantly surprised to find out there’s a mixed-gender session in the evening, which made the experience even more special. The view of nature surrounding the onsen was stunning, and the onsen itself is incredibly spacious – one of the largest open-air onsen we’ve been to. A must-visit if you're in Kusatsu.
Chayoot V — Google review
It was my first time visiting here! I love the wider space here but the water wasn’t that clean and a lot of mosses. I don’t think taking bath during the midafternoon is a good idea. It’s bit hot and feeling slimy due to seaweed there. Since tons of people were there, water wasn’t not clear so recommended to go there early in the morning. Water is a bit salty and a cool experience for sure but there’s no shower so be aware of that! Other than that, enjoy! Cheers 🥂
Mr. D — Google review
This is my second favourite onsen in the area. There is only one pool area so the temperature selection is limited. The further you move away from the source the less hot it is, but it's still hot everywhere you go because it's just one pool. Important to note that there is no shower or rinse off area. I highly recommend to go on a day with a mix of sun and rain. This is my favourite onsen when it's raining.
Juan M — Google review
Amazing onsen with a scenic view. There is only a locker room and a large bath (no individual showers or washing areas). I recommend preparing a 100 yen coin for the locker.
- Y — Google review
It's an outdoor hot spring with blue sky view and fresh air. When you sit in the water too long and feel too hot, you can stand up for the cold breeze. In winter, the onsen is surrounded by snow, and some of the soft snow even falls from the roof, creating an amazing experience. I highly recommend it. There's no place to shower. Bring your own towel to dry yourself.
Mason T — Google review
It cost ¥800 to enter but well worth it. There is no proper shower place just a gallon of water with some small bucket to splash yourself. Bring your own (big & small) towel. Can be purchased but more pricey. Toliets are available. The onsen is very big also the size a basketball court. Surrounded my nature its very peaceful and relaxing in this public bath. Quite a walk up to this public bath but the scenery was beautiful.
Yvonne L — Google review
It's the largest rotenburo open air bath in Kusatsu. Y800 but there are no showers/washing stations. The bath area is huge and is divided into men and women for bathing, except for Fridays when the two are connected for both men and women and then not for naked bathing, and you should bring your swim suit. They have a slight discount if you get multi-onsen tickets where you get to visit one or two others for the discounted price.

Ski & Snowboard Areas
Nestled in the Gunma Prefecture of Japan, Kusatsu Onsen Ski Resort has been welcoming visitors for over a century and holds the distinction of being home to Japan's first ski lift. The resort offers five slopes suitable for skiers of all levels, with plenty of beginner-friendly courses. In addition to skiing, the resort also provides rental services for those who arrive empty-handed.
People staff amenities. It's a sweet spot. Older skiers work well. Snowboards abound. Not always skilled. Slamon snowboard to avoid collision. Consider rhem ground covering. I'm commuting daily by bus from below. The next visit will be overnight. Only 3 hours per day, the bus schedule is limited, and do not be late. Taxi down will be costly. Try to plan ahead. I did not.
David L — Google review
It suited my level beginner-intermediate snowboarding. Hardly any English signs in the area but enough friendly people trying their best to help. It's easy to get to as well from the town, I walked there via route 292. Some part of the road can be narrow but you can cut across via the Sainokawara park. The chair to the upper half of the skifield was closed due to strong wind but the sign was only at the entrance of the chair. However to get to this entrance, you'll have to go down slightly from the gondola exit, and when I figured it was closed, it's either walk uphill back to gondola platform or go down (intermediate). It was daunting as I was still a beginner at that stage. Also the gear rental can be done on site without online booking. Maybe it's communication difficulties, I was just given the gear, no fitting. Pretty much DIY. The gear rental accept credit card, but the entrance ticket office cash or cards only (I didn't pay attention which one). Food was decent and affordable. There's a water station in the cafeteria.

Throwback to where my skiing journey began! This special place holds my first memories on the slopes, and now it's where my kids discover the joy of snow for the very first time. Family fun and unforgettable moments!

such a fun experience. rented everything for a day pass and was so cool. tool lessons as well. the instructor did not speak English but we were able to get by with gestures. worth checking out if you are here.
Michael R — Google review
It was my first time to try skiing. We arrived there on a Saturday afternoon, around 1pm, and we tried to rent the ski wear and gear, but there were no more available sizes for us. It was full, so we just rented in a nearby shop. After renting, we went back to the Ski Resort. It is a public space and skiing there is free, as long as you have a gear. I also learned that all residents of Kusatsu Onsen can freely avail of the Gondola and lift as much as they want. We joined the Kusatsu Ski School for 5000 yen. It was helpful if you're a beginner. I even lost track of time about how long that lasted, coz it was fun--maybe about 2 hours. The teacher tried his best to speak English. After that, we just enjoyed skiing in the area. We tried the Gondola for ¥2000, and we skied from there. There is a beginner-friendly route up there. My friends also tried the ski lift for also ¥2000. For a beginner like me, I was scared to try it coz jumping off at the top was scary. One of my friends also tripped over when she jumped down. Just be careful when you try it. There is also a food court, but expect that on the weekend, it is really packed. You have to wait for vacant tables before you can sit. There is also a souvenir shop. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience.
Rhona D — Google review
The ski resort is great for beginners. slopes are not so tough, so not scary to train for the first time. The snow was also good in February. And the best thing is that after snowboarding you can go to the best ever onsen of Kusatu
Olga N — Google review
Must go! Sky swing, gondola and banzip tengu for 3100yen only, good for adults or family. Definitely will visit again in Winter!
OK G — Google review
The snow in this area is not as powdery and heavy as in northern Japan such as Hokkaido and Aomori. The slopes consist 50% beginner’s courses. Some of the routes are too flat or upwards. For first timer skiers and snowboarders it will be a good place to have fun. There is an area for kids too. The rental shop has old equipments and colorful wears. Canteen has quite a number of choices for lunch. Overall I recommend this place for first timer and beginners. There is one short route for intermediate level but might be too boring for those who seek challenges.

The Onioshidashi Volcanic Park is a magnificent location with paved pathways surrounded by rugged lava rock, seasonal azaleas and an exquisite view of the active Mount Asama in Japan. The park was formed by volcanic sediment deposited during the 1783 big eruption of Mount Asama. Visitors can explore various trails inside the park guided by boards, and a ticket purchase includes a guide.
This is a lava field with great scenery. It was born out of a 1783 volcanic eruption. A few routes ranging from 30 min to 60 min.
The B — Google review
If you go extremely leisurely I think you can finish all routes in 90-120min. I circled the outer rim one time and it took about 45 min. Plenty of parking outside which is free. The scenery was quite good, with volcanic rock formations and autumn colours all around 😊 I came 31st Oct 2024 which was apparently a little past peak, though, 2024 was a later year than normal for autumn colours.
Ang Y — Google review
Oniōshidashi Volcanic Park is an incredible place to witness the raw power of nature. We visited in the morning and was amazed by the landscape — a vast field of jagged black lava rocks formed from the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama. Walking through the trails feels like exploring another planet, with panoramic mountain views and unique rock formations at every turn. The contrast between the dark volcanic terrain and the surrounding greenery is breathtaking. There’s also a peaceful temple dedicated to the Goddness of Mercy Kannon (观音) within the park that adds a spiritual touch to the experience. It’s well-maintained, easy to navigate, and offers great photo spots. A must-visit for nature lovers and geology enthusiasts alike. Do try to spot the luminous moss hidden between the rocks crevices. Suggest to apply sunscreen or sunblock especially when the weather is sunny! Entrance is ¥700 per adult and ¥500 per children. There is also a toll fee of ¥280 in and out of the vicinity.

Onioshidashi Volcanic Park is a truly unique place to visit. The entire landscape was formed by the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama, and walking through the rugged lava fields feels almost otherworldly. The pathways are well maintained and make it easy to explore the area at your own pace. There are clear viewpoints where you can see Mount Asama in the distance, quietly reminding you of the power of nature. It is both fascinating and peaceful, and definitely worth a stop if you are travelling around Karuizawa or the surrounding region. A memorable experience for both adults and children.
Daddydrives — Google review
Very nice place with nice view and a temple. 2 hours would be more than enough for a full walk. If you are fast, 1 hour can cover most of the major routes.
Dreamknight70 — Google review
A volcanic park that you shouldn’t miss! The view is absolutely stunning. A perfect spot to admire the beauty of nature with your own eyes 😂😂 The entrance fee is also very affordable
Suwadee P — Google review
A nice scenery of volcanic rocks. It's a pity the place is covered with concrete and not much of the trail is kept natural. While I understand this makes it more accessible, it kind of killed the atmosphere for me. The buildings and facilities are also outdated, which gives it the feeling of an old theme park rather than a beautiful natural park. On top of that, half of the trails were closed because someone saw a bear a month ago. It would have been useful to know this when we entered. There's free parking, but to get here from Old Karuizawa or Kita-Karuizawa, you have to go through a paid "highway." I recommend setting your navigation for "no tolls," as we took a public road on the way back and it was a more comfortable drive. On the positive side, you can enter with a dog 🐕, and there's no additional fee for them. There's also a dog run next to the parking lot that costs about 1,000 yen (or 500 yen if you visit the park as well).

Don't overlook this establishment! This intimate eatery brings immense joy. Their sushi and sashimi offerings are unparalleled and exceptional. Each individual piece of sushi and sashimi is meticulously crafted. Notice a distinct flavor in their sushi, especially the Japanese omelet, which adds to its delectability. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any aficionado of sushi and sashimi. Adore this quaint hidden sushi establishment.
Come for the hot springs, stay for the sushi here. The chirashi bowl is a highlight - the rice is seasoned with a gentle amount of vinegar, topped with pickles and even a side of mushroom to add a change of texture and flavour. The sashimi is served separately with some incredible cuts of tuna and squid to keep the whole meal interesting throughout the whole meal. A little yuzu peel in the miso soup finishes of this memorable experience.

I've been many places and had an abundance of Sushi, but this place deserves to be legendary. The quality, the taste, they deserve the highest praise, it is just amazing. Some of the best Sushi I have ever had. I highly recommend this place, it is a hidden gem.

Ayametei, a Japanese restaurant, offers delectable sweet natto made from grade A flower beans. The owner puts great emphasis on the cultivation process, resulting in an elegant sweetness and a moist, soft texture. Unlike sugary desserts, Ayametei's amanatto boasts a gentle sweetness derived naturally from the beans. This treat pairs perfectly with green tea and has gained popularity among patrons.
The female owner was friendly and brought out a menu written on a chalk board to facilitate ordering. The beef and pork sukiyaki was delightable especially on a cold chilly night. The grilled mackeral was also sweet and grilled to perfection!

We had a wonderful dinner here last night (Thursday)! We are staying in the hotel next door and finally got around to trying this restaurant for dinner. We didn’t have any trouble getting a table early (around 5.30-6pm). We got lots of delicious little dishes, including potatoes that I loved!, and had the beef hot pot. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in Japan. We speak very little Japanese but everyone was so friendly and helpful!

Karuizawa Toy Kingdom is a family-friendly entertainment venue that offers an extensive variety of both indoor and outdoor play spaces, attractions, activities, and crafts suitable for children. This amusement park boasts a plethora of rides, games, and recreation areas designed to engage young visitors in playful exploration and discovery. The facility caters to kids' diverse interests and preferences through its broad range of entertainment choices.
We visited on a Friday so it wasn't crowded at all and we spent 5 hours here with our 4-year-old. The outdoor forest adventure area was my favourite as the weather was great and the autumn colours were beautiful. The tree houses were very cute and there was a lot to explore. There is a small river where you can do trout-fishing and have grilled fish afterwards (note that you can only catch up to 2 fish and to minimise the waiting time, the fish that you eat is not the one that you catch). The view from the giant ferris wheel was spectacular. The rides were simple but perfect for young children. Overall, we had an enjoyable time outdoors on a perfect autumn day and the free pass was well worth it (2,600yen for adults and 2,400yen for children discounted).

It’s a great place to take kids out for the entire day. Some rides could be updated, but it's a fun place to play. I recommend the adventure park located with the park. It is quite big and there is plenty of space to be wild. It's easy to lose track of time and spend a few hours at this attraction. There's forts, zip lines, places to climb and hike. Enjoy your visit!
Aaron E — Google review
Second times visit but this time on weekday. Stress free, less people around. Facilities seems dated but still so fun for kids. There were food trucks, which seems delicious. Less people in the afternoon.
Parinya P — Google review
This establishment is a suitable location for young children. My child derives great pleasure from visiting this establishment. It is advisable to utilize personal transportation when visiting this establishment. The establishment is not heavily populated, which results in a more enjoyable experience due to the absence of extensive queues.
Jerry C — Google review
It is a shame. The biggest attraction (kids adventure) is closed under perfect sunny weather. Staff said strong winds (no proof), and not shown in any app or sensed by anyone but herself. No refund, no notice before entry. It’s just a scam.
Felix C — Google review
Excellent amusement park for kids ages 1-8. The athletics area is the best area, similar to the forest adventure for kids. If they want to go one the rides I’d recommend getting a one day pass, but if they are content to just playing with toy’s then an entrance ticket is enough
Hikaru S — Google review
It's ok. Limited and dated rides - as long as the kids have fun.
Trip A — Google review
The climbing and play area in the forest is nice and quite large. The rides are typical of small theme parks. Very short, very small and generally only good for kids under 8. Wait times were very short otherwise none of the rides would be worth anyone's time.

A quirky design for a viewpoint that is pretty unique with beautiful all around views over looking the famous cabbage patches. It's supposed to also be a spot where husbands need to express their love and support for their wifes. Parking is free and you may spend up to 30mins to stroll through the viewpoint paths.

Mount Azumaya is a popular and picturesque peak that offers stunning panoramic views, forest hiking trails, and a mountaintop shrine. Accessing the trailhead involves taking a bus from Ueda Station to Sugaidara Dabos and then walking to the starting point at a nearby farm. The hike itself is enjoyable and highly recommended for its breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. The mountain also boasts beautiful flowers, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts.
Really enjoyed the view of the mountain and beautiful flowes😊
Takumitsu A — Google review
Quite pleasant hike, at least at the beginning, as we got there to late to hike to the top of the mount. The way there is a bit tricky: you gotta take a bus from Ueda Station, get off at Sugaidara Dabos, and from there walk to the farm where you start the hike. In our case, the bus driver didn't let us know as we reached the last station, just turned around and started driving back. So we had to walk back to Davos and then to the farm. So pay attention to the last attention. Other than that, it's a hike to be recommended. Views are quite nice as one climbs up.

From Sugadaira Ranch, the trail was gentle, the scenery changed from time to time, and the summit came into view. It was a very fun and easy trail to walk on♪ Unfortunately, the summit was shrouded in mist that day, and the view was only towards Mt. Nekodake, but I would like to come and visit again! The bamboo grass was wet from the rain that had fallen overnight, so we decided to use only the bottom layer of our rain gear for the rest of the climb. From the summit, we could clearly see the Northern Alps above the clouds. It was also wonderful to see the ranch through gaps in the clouds. Elegant rooms & suites with mountain views, plus free breakfast, an indoor pool & a spa.
Good impressions on 1) room size bigger far more than my expectations, 2) cleanness is moderate and 3) hospitality and responses from restaurant service people. I am sure I will recommend this hotel to my friends

Hotel Karuizawa 1130 is a spacious hotel with a relaxing on-site hot spring. While the rooms are comfortable, the restaurant can become quite busy, especially during mealtimes. Be prepared for potential wait times at the buffet.

The service of the staff here towards foreign travelers is very poor. This was my first experience in a Japanese hotel where staff were rude to overseas guests. During this stay, I encountered two unpleasant experiences. The first was during breakfast. I informed the staff that my family had mobility issues and requested a seat on the second floor that did not require going up stairs. However, the staff firmly stated that because we arrived after 7:30 AM, they could not accommodate our request. At that time, there were vacant seats on the second floor, and friends in our group who arrived after 7:30 were seated there, but the staff insisted we could not change our seats. Our breakfast time was from 7:30 to 9:00, and throughout the process, the staff's attitude was very unfriendly. The second experience was at the hotel's Nonoka, where I wanted to book a massage. I told the staff my request in English, but after exchanging a glance with the massage therapist nearby, they directly told me that the bookings were full. I hadn't even mentioned a specific time or details before being rejected, even though the massage room was obviously empty. It is clear that the staff at this hotel do not treat travelers very kindly.

To be honest, the hotel felt more like a holiday chalet, with all the local kids and families. But the front desk manager's service is impeccable. He did not understand my question about where I can see the sunrise on ground level and thought I was asking about the operating hours of the observatory on Level 8. But he realised I was still on level 8 after finding no suitable photo angles on ground level, he opened the observatory 1 hour earlier for me and my group mates. He also waved our bus off later that morning! Very thoughtful! Highly appreciated!

Rooms are spacious. However this hotel is historical. Just about everything is old/dated. Started sneezing as soon as I entered the room. Mattress is VERY old with springs poking me.

Grand resort from the bygone era. The massive building stood out from the quiet leafy neighbourhood. Our twin room was very spacious with living area. Extensive breakfast options. Loved the picked vegetable section. Do go early for a window table. The hotel is a little far from Karuizawa but since it is higher above on the plateau we got to enjoyed cooler weather.

We booked the open-air private hot tub room with mountain view for 2 people. The room was huge, the hot tub was really nice (altho its not onsen), the amenities were super cute. Breakfast at the hotel was really good, they had freshly made rice ball (onigiri). The hotel was really nice that they let us take the shuttle bus from Karuizawa Station back to the hotel as we left our purse after driving back to Shinjuku. WE really appreciate it!
Hoi F — Google review
The room is spacey, but smells aged from the second you stepped into the room. Staffs are helpful, because we were not driving front staff communicated to the taxi driver for reserving the way back. Buffett provides good variation, can't say it's tasty, it's average. It's convenient for those travellers who drive to the hotel.

Soba noodle shop
Issaku-an, a soba noodle shop located at Tenseiro, offers a delightful culinary experience. The tempura served here is exceptional and comes with a piping hot tempura sauce that enhances its flavor. Although there was a slight delay in receiving the mentsuyu with the soba noodles, it wasn't enough to overshadow the overall experience. For those who appreciate various condiments and flavorful noodle soups, this might have been mildly disappointing.

The restaurant has a table that seats four and a counter. The buckwheat flour is apparently made from stone-ground domestic Hitachi Autumn buckwheat. The soba bags are also displayed on the wall. I ordered a large serving of soba noodles, which I think is just right for a man. Other customers ordered tempura, which was crispy and looked delicious. I would give this soba, made from 100% domestic buckwheat flour, five stars, but I had been seeing buckwheat flowers all the way on my way from Ueda City to Tsumagoi Village, so my mind was completely on Shinshu soba. I was a little disappointed, so I gave it four stars. It's not that the restaurant is bad. To whom it may concern, I would like to express how appreciated and impressed I am during my stay in your hotel. This is our 3rd visit to Japan and Pascal is the 9th hotel we have staying in Japan. We are booking to stay at your hotel for 8 days and 7 nights, today is my 5th day staying but I can’t wait to write you a review 😆 Your hotel staff and the snow sports staff are wonderful and have great service minded 💜 We would like to extend our appreciation specifically to Miss Thunchanok. Her work ethic and professionalism is outstanding especially with her quick problems solving🥰 At first, we were unsure if we made the right decision canceled another ski resort with $300 AUD cancelation fee coming to your hotel. However, with the great service from Miss Thunchanok, we are delighted to say that we made the right choice indeed. Thank you so so much 😻🥰😍 There is another staff we would like to acknowledge with her professionalism, Sharon from the snowboarding team. As a fitness instructor myself, I can assure that her instructing skills and her knowledge are very valuable to your hotel. She is not only able to demonstrate her skills, but also able to teach base on individuality of each students. My family and I are definitely coming back to learn more skills with her in the next season ❄️🗻☃️

Last Christmas, we visited Japan and wanted to learn how to ski. Staying at this resort was worth it—the ski instructors were excellent and provided personalized lessons based on individual needs. The staff, in general, were very friendly. However, the resort's buildings needed some maintenance, especially the doors, which required repairs. Dinner was disappointing due to the limited selection of Japanese food, which ran out quickly and was often served cold. Keeping the food warm should have been easy, but with dinner starting at 6 PM, arriving just 20 minutes late meant most of the food was already gone. Surprisingly, for a winter resort, there was no bar open during the day or evening—only during dinner service. Additionally, there were very few restaurants offering hot snacks or drinks for skiers to enjoy outdoors in the cold weather. As tourists, we also expected to find souvenirs like magnets, but none were available. There were no options for sightseeing in nearby small towns, and the resort didn’t offer any local products.

This hotel is absolutely lovely. All hotel’s staffs are really helpful and try very hard to make your stay memorable. The hotel manager is professional, On the first night our room had a problem and she offered a solution to fix this problem immediately. We love the staffs here. Ski in & Ski out is another great thing, our room has a view of ski slope and looks stunning when snowing. Onsen is average but offers everything you need. Free snowboard lesson also another nice offer of this hotel if you stay more than 3 nights. Sharon, snowboard instructor is the best. She is so skilled and patience to teach you. If you had a lesson with her, you will improve quickly. However, the other snowboard instructors are not good. They don’t teach you much at all and once you start asking questions (even about snowboard’s topic) they will get annoyed and give you answers that you don’t expect to hear and make you stop asking. I hope they will improve their issue in the future. We really like this hotel and looking forward to visit here again next season.

1st time to this ski resort. All the conveniences of a free shuttle bus pick up to and fro (hotel to Karuizawa station), breakfast and dinner provided (you can choose your options), onsen facilities, free ski locker for hotel guests, ski school and ski rentals under under one roof made this place simply amazing! Nice comfortable and clean rooms and a super friendly & responsive staff headed by Thansinee. Not forgetting the great ski instructors I had. So glad I chose a different place to ski this year!

My partner and I really enjoyed our 5days stay and ski in this hotel. Room was simple(back to the 90s) but clean and quiet. We also enjoyed the hotel's indoor onsen, especially after our daily skiing. I was unwell and asked the receptionist if I could see a doctor. They were so helpful to arrange the transport and also informed the clinic of my symptoms ahead of my visit. The staff even called to check on me that evening. Really appreciate that personal touch from the team. Skiing: the slopes are beginner friendly. From someone like me who didn't know how to ski, managed to ski down the slope by day 2. The instructors were very friendly and patient. Highly recommended to take up the skiing class. It's not a luxury resort, but it was really nice and cozy. At the end of the stay, we managed to make a few friends with fellow hotel guests. Nice small community. Highly recommended.

Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, an active stratovolcano with three crater lakes, is no longer accessible to the public. While a day trip to Karuizawa from Tokyo is possible, it's recommended to stay overnight in Kusatsu at one of its hot spring guesthouses. This allows visitors to fully experience the area and nearby attractions such as Mount Asama and the unique Onioshidashi Volcanic Park.

It's a shame because it's foggy and the weather isn't good, you can't see the sulfur, the road is being repaired, and the parking lot is closed, a little below there is a place to park, there are wild blueberries growing on the rocks, the area is really beautiful and amazing, you can feel the clouds and sky very close. Please be aware that there are long stairs with different heights. There was some snow left on the promenade on the far right side, but I was able to follow the footsteps without any difficulty. You can see all the way to Yubatake from the observation deck, but it's not touristy like Kusatsu, so it's a natural view (perhaps a compact version of Noboribetsu). By the way, there was a sign that said the bear path was through the bamboo bushes, so I made some noise as I passed. Also, the gravel road below is closed, so you have to go down further and pass by the Yubatake field, but the facilities are very poor and you can't get close to it because of the fence. It's a waste.

Chatsubomi Moss Park, located in Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma County, Gunma Prefecture, is renowned as the birthplace of chatsubomi-goke, a type of moss that thrives in highly acidic water. The park features boardwalks and platforms offering stunning views of the moss-covered landscape sustained by an acidic spring. Visitors can admire the striking contrast between vibrant green moss on rocks and flowing water.
Cute little moss park. Entrance fee of 600 yen per person. Free shuttle bus that comes every 5 or so minutes. About a 300m walk up the hill to get to the boardwalk. Probably take at most an hour to walk around with gratuitous amounts of photo taking.

Good side trip from Kusatsu Onsen. Take the bus or walk the trail to the moss area. We chose to walk the trail heading back and saw the nice little shrine on the way.
Khairani A — Google review
This natural park features a fountain of hot spring water that supports a kind of moss adapted to living in the acidic water. It looks beautiful when the weather is rainy and cool, but unfortunately I went in mid-August after a historic hot and dry spell, so most of the moss had gone dormant or died back. It's still a beautiful location and there are trails that go off from here to internationally recognized wetlands in the mountains. As far as I know, you need a car to get here and finding it can be a bit tricky. Parking is free but there is a charge for entry of 500 yen if I remember. A shuttle bus is available from the visitor center to the moss area, but the 30 minute walk through the forest is easy and beautiful itself. A small shop at the entrance sells local products and ice cream. Although it doesn't seem too touristy yet, there were a number of foreign visitors -- I just hope it doesn't become overrun with horrible bus tours.

I suggest this is a must visit if you travel to Kusatsu village. A bit of drive from the village but believe me it worth the effort. The place still not very touristy. So you can have your solitude walking there. Very very nice, i love it.

Scenic spot
Nestled between Nakanojo Town and Kusatsu Town, Yoshigadaira Marsh is a stunning wetland area recognized under the Ramsar Convention for its ecological significance. This unique destination offers visitors a chance to explore its diverse landscapes, including gentle slopes and rocky paths that lead to breathtaking views. A hike from Shibu Pass takes you through this serene environment, where the altitude difference of about 300 meters provides an invigorating experience.
Trail is 2.7 km one way. It's not very steep, but rocky and muddy in some places. Completed it in ~3h with a 7 year old. Climbing back up was somehow easier than the descent because of the rocky path. The views along the way and the marshlands are beautiful!

(Translated by Google) We parked our car at Shibu Pass and hiked for less than an hour downhill and over an hour uphill. It's not as good as a promenade as there are a lot of rocks, but the slope is gentle and the time difference between going up and down is not that great. The altitude difference is approximately 300 meters. Yoshikedaira Wetland is a 600 meter loop of the wooden path. I imagine it would be beautiful in early summer with cotton sedges and in autumn. There are also some ponds. I guess the best time is when the leaves turn red. Shibu Pass is 2,100 meters above sea level, so it's quite cool even when the city is extremely hot. ✳Currently, perhaps due to volcanic activity, the parking lot near Mt. Shirane is closed, and the promenade that goes down from Yugama to Yoshikedaira is also closed, so the only way to get to Yoshikedaira Wetland is from Shibu Pass. Mostly in the forest zone, I was able to see Yoshigahira Wetland and Mt. Shirane several times below. The halfway point, Damashi-daira, seemed quite long and I thought it was still going down, but as I made my way through the latter half, I heard the sound of a flowing river and saw a cluster of cotton grass waving in the refreshing breeze in front of me. , I couldn't help but cry out. There was a wooden path around the wetland, and we were able to enjoy the ponds and cotton sedges. There was also a bench, so I was able to take a relaxing break while watching the cotton grass. After this, I went to Yoshigadaira Hutte and returned by piston, but it was a very difficult climb back. However, I think the scenery of the cotton grass clumps and vast wetlands is worth going to. Kusatsu-Shirane. However, I think the only way to get to Yoshigahira is to walk with hiking gear. I think it's common to walk down from Shibu Pass, but the path is quite stony, so people who are not used to hiking may have a hard time climbing back up on the way back. Alternatively, you need to cross the Ohira Marsh from Chatsubomigoke Park while looking at Oike Pond or Heibei Pond, and then climb an even steeper mountain trail. This is quite a distance and has a large difference in altitude. Kusatsu Onsen Netsunoyu is a charming two-story building in the Taisho-roman style, situated in front of Yubatake. The facility offers a unique experience where visitors can witness traditional methods for cooling bathing waters through dance shows and demonstrations by the Yumomi Girls.
A must do at Kusatsu, the queues for the tickets gets long quick and there is a capacity limit, but there are multiple shows throughout the day, so do plan accordingly. Most of the live explanation is in Japanese but there is an introductory video with english subs that will give you a rough idea of what is going on. Nonetheless the show has such a deep history and not only was the performance entertaining, but watching the local crowd reactions and singing the theme song afterwards was fun too. Don’t miss!

This traditional performance originated from the practical need to cool Kusatsu’s extremely hot spring water, and has evolved into a cultural show performed three times each in the morning and afternoon. Tickets go on sale 30 minutes before each performance, and you can find discount coupons on their website to save some money on admission. The performance itself is quite fascinating and definitely worth experiencing once if you’re visiting Kusatsu. It’s an interesting glimpse into how practical necessity became cultural tradition, and makes for an enjoyable way to learn about the area’s hot spring heritage while being entertained.

Kusatsu Onsen(hot springs) ‘Yumomi to odori’ (traditional cooling water ceremony and dance). This was my first trip to Kusatsu and I genuinely had no idea what the Yumomi show involved; there were a lot of people lining up to see it, so we decided that it must be worth lining up for. First we lined up to purchase our tickets which were 700 yen per person. Then we joined a new line which was for the next show. It was a pleasant autumn day, with lots of young people lining up, so people watching kept us entertained. When the show started I learnt that the temperature of the hot spring water in Kusatsu is 50 degrees and a unique dance with wooden paddles had been created to cool the water down. We enjoyed the show which is added drawcard to an already popular hot spring town, it is a bit of fun, a bit of culture and a good money spinner for the town.

Fun experience to try out the traditional method on cooling the 50C onsen water. I had a lot of fun doing it, and the staff helped on taking videos and photos as well. That was very helpful, especially since I'm a solo traveler. Later the evening I watched the performance as well.

The entrance fee is 700 yen. There is a timetable. The whole performance is about a half hour long. Foreigners can’t really understand this simple performance, but it’s mainly about some methods to cool down the temperature in the old day, and also some history background’s introduction.

Great show! Come visit and watch. The show takes about 30 minutes so if you're there for a short period of time, at least try to catch a glimpse of the first 5-10 minutes to get the essence of it.

Make sure you buy the ticket for this show Its a short show but its really show how traditional way of cooling the onsen water Really interesting :)
Reddz708 — Google review
If you visit the website, there is a 50 yen off coupon, which could be helpful for people ordering in larger groups. Discounts tend to add up! Its a good idea to check the show times available on your day beforehand as well. You can purchase tickets 30 minutes before each show time at the ticket window. People start lining up around then as well, and being toward the front of the line will give you better choice of your seat. We enjoyed the show, but it is entirely in Japanese, so reconsider if that will bother you. There was a dance at the beginning, then a long talking portion with some audience participation, and finally the two yumomi demonstrations with singing. It was interesting, but not something I would see more than once personally.

Nestled in the picturesque Tsumagoi Village of Gunma Prefecture, Kazawa Snow Area is a winter wonderland perfect for skiers of all levels. With its diverse ski slopes and training camps, it caters especially well to beginners and families looking to enjoy a day on the snow without the hustle and bustle often found at larger resorts. The area boasts stunning scenery, particularly on sunny days when visibility is excellent.

The '日本中心の標' is a stone marker located off the Forest Road Ojo Shitaraguri Line. Accessible from both Tatsuno and Weeping Chestnut Park, the road from Tatsuno is lightly paved while the other side is unpaved and challenging for regular vehicles. However, the moss-covered rocks and waterfalls falling from the mountainside are a pleasant sight to see on your journey. I heard from information on the internet that it was affected by the typhoon. Has it been restored now? I remember that the waterfall was not far from the parking lot at that time. There were some areas that were not maintained, and I remember walking steadily over floating stones and mud. We recommend comfortable footwear. The parking lot was well maintained. You can enjoy beautiful scenery during the autumn leaves season. There is also a small but beautiful pond, and on days when there is little wind, you can take beautiful pictures. It's not a place you can enjoy for a long time as the main part of your trip, but I think you can take a break if you go nearby. I visited Atelier Fromage from the Tokai area while shopping. I was able to enjoy the beautiful scenery on a short drive. The waterfall itself isn't that big, but I think it's worth a visit! (Original) 鹿沢温泉へ向かう途中、看板を見つけ寄ってみました。 滝へ向かう道がとても幻想的で素敵でした。 滝自体はそれほど大きいものではありませんが、行ってみる価値はあると思いますよ!

The autumn leaves in the parking lot were the most beautiful today lol (Original) 地位財けれど趣のある滝 駐車場から少し歩けば見ることができます。下はぬかるんでるところがあるのでちゃんとした靴でどうぞ。 駐車場の紅葉が今日一素敵だったw

(Translated by Google) On my way from Kita-Karuizawa towards Komoro, I saw a very prominent signboard that said ``Tamadare Falls'' and decided to stop by. As soon as you drive down from the side of the sign, there is a gravel parking lot. When you get off the car, you will see a small bridge. You can see a very small waterfall near the bridge. There was a lovely woman who was taking pictures on the bridge, so I asked her, ``Is this Tamadare Falls?'' She told me that the waterfall was about a 5-minute walk from here. We arrived shortly after climbing a straight road maintained with sawdust. It's not a big waterfall, but it feels nice and comfortable. After returning from the waterfall, I enjoyed talking with the woman again on the bridge, and I am grateful to this waterfall for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime joy.
