No.38 Kongoufukuji Temple

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Kongōfukuji Temple, also known as Sada-zan Fudaraku-in, is a significant stop on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage in Japan. Situated in Tosa-Shimizu City near Cape Ashizuri, this Buzan school Shingon Buddhist temple offers visitors a glimpse into the pilgrim experience. The temple is located halfway up a hill and provides stunning views of its surroundings.
I don't think they missed putting any type of symbolic Buddhist item in this temple. 😂 It's beautiful and you can take a ton of photos. But it lacks serenity. That said, it's definitely worth a visit.
Kracevaya — Google review
My favourite temple so far on the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage. Absolutely stunning!
Beatrice T — Google review
Possibly the most beautiful of the temples I've seen so far, would absolutely recommend doing a bit of a nature walk nearby if you've got the energy, plus there is a great onsen close by ar Mana village.

The Statue of John Manjiro

Sculpture
Sights & Landmarks
The statue of John Manjiro, located in Cape Ashizuri, is a significant monument that symbolizes Japan's modernization. Without his contributions, the progress of modernization in Japan could have been hindered. Interestingly, this statue is not situated in Manjiro's actual hometown but can be reached within 30 minutes by bus or 15 minutes by car.
(Translated by Google) After visiting Nakahama's birthplace, we visited Cape Ashizuri. Kochi Prefecture has so many stone statues of great figures. I feel like I've been there at least 10. My wife always asks me, "Who is this man?" [Summary of the Information Sign] Nakahama Manjiro (1827-1898) was active during the turbulent period of Japan's transition from isolation to openness, and contributed to the development of Meiji culture. Rescued by an American whaling ship after being shipwrecked at sea at age 14, he received a formal education in the United States and became the first Japanese person to study abroad. He mastered English, navigation, and surveying, and circumnavigated the seven seas. After returning to Japan, he served as a direct retainer of the shogunate, lecturing on foreign affairs, translating documents, and teaching English. He also contributed to the voyage of the Kanrin Maru, the first Japanese to cross the Pacific Ocean. He is also said to have been the first person to take photographs in Edo (present-day Tokyo). In 1869, he served as a professor at Kaisei School, the predecessor to the University of Tokyo, and passed away at the age of 71, ending his eventful life.

(Translated by Google) This is a bronze statue that stands right near the parking lot leading to Cape Ashizuri. John Manjiro was the first international man in modern Japan, and his real name was Manjiro Nakahama. Although he was lost while out fishing in 1841, he was fortunately rescued by Captain William H. Whitfield of the American whaling ship John Howland, where he received schooling in the captain's hometown of Fairhaven and expanded his overseas knowledge. . After returning to Japan in 1851, John Manjiro became a direct consultant to the Shogunate due to his international knowledge, and in 1860, the ship that John Manjiro boarded was Katsu Kaishu as part of the overseas mission dispatched by the Shogunate to exchange instruments of ratification for the Japan-US Treaty of Amity and Commerce. Kanrin Maru was the captain. I believe that Manjiro's achievements in laying the foundation for Japan-US exchanges toward the opening of the country were significant. (Translated by Google) This is a bronze statue of John Manjiro. Unlike the group of statues that stand near the museum, here Manjiro stands alone and dignified. Where is Mr. Manjiro's line of sight facing toward the Pacific Ocean? I don't know, but if he was such a great person, even if he was shipwrecked or suddenly had to live overseas, he would have fought against everything and returned to Japan alive, and now he was doing great work related to the Meiji Restoration in Japan. It's no wonder why. Also, right next to this bronze statue is the ``Tosa Great Figures Statue Guide Map''. It was a very interesting resource, containing information about bronze statues of great figures from Kochi Prefecture, from Ryoma Sakamoto to Motochika Chosokabe to Shigeru Yoshida.

Her dignified figure looked even better than the portrait. The fact that the parking lot was quite small made me feel more disappointed than the absolute number of tourists. Since the pilgrims come by car, it seems that parking is even more scarce. It's about 200m one way to the lighthouse, so expect your stay to be a little longer. Hakusan Natural Arch

Lookouts
Hakusan Natural Arch is a fascinating destination characterized by a rocky formation covered with trees and an impressive arch shaped through centuries of water erosion. The site offers breathtaking views, accessed via stairs that are not too steep and take about 10-15 minutes to reach the cave. While elderly and children should be cautious, it's an exciting place to visit for anyone interested in walking from Ashizuri Therme Hotel, which is approximately 20 minutes away.
No pain no gain- very steep steps down…. Tough on the knees- but the reward is great. Great views and even a special selfie stand for your phone right in front of the arch. Pictures explains a thousand words. But beware - the climb back up the stairs!!!! Tough in the knees and thighs and butts! Had to stop many several times to pause and catch out breath! But worth it .

You need to climb stiff steps down and up from the hilltop to Hakusan Arch. The best is you have the chance to walk right in front of it. If you are walking to Hakusan Arch from the lighthouse. It is better to walk from the car road than to walk the coastal trial.

Cape Ashizuri, located at the tip of the Ashizuri Peninsula in Japan, is a stunning promontory offering sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and a nearby lighthouse. This remote cape, part of the Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park, is known for its breathtaking landscapes and is a must-visit for travelers exploring Kochi. The observatory provides spectacular 270-degree views of the dynamic Pacific, allowing visitors to appreciate the grandeur of Mother Nature.
Was pretty windy when we went. The view was nice and a good well marked walking trail to walk around m. The free foot onsen was closed on Wednesday. Been to many other beautiful capes but if you are close by, worth a visit.

The ocean view from the top of the cape spreads out. There is a statue of John Manjiro Nakahama at the entrance. Although he was only a fisherman, he played a major role for opening Japan at the end of Tokugawa shogunate era. Public transportation from JR Nakamura Station to Cape Ashizuri is available, however that is very unfrequent. Please check the schedule or timetable before you visit Shimanto city.

As you climb up the rocks, you can also enjoy a nice view of the ocean from the top. I was guided to If it's related to tourism, I think you have to go there at least once. I went by navigation. It's like they were talking about a giant taking off his geta clogs... However, when I went there, I found it to be a mysterious place that is difficult to describe in words. Rather than calling it a power spot, something happened here a long time ago, and it's not a natural artifact. It felt like a ruin where something had once been. I wonder if the Yayoi people came here riding the Kuroshio current. I think it's well worth a visit if you're nearby. Ryugu Shrine in Tosashimizu offers a stunning view of the ocean and is adorned with dragon tributes, featuring vibrant red architecture against the backdrop of the deep blue sea. The climb to the shrine provides breathtaking ocean views. As you pass through the forest, you'll encounter rock walls and stone steps that create an extraordinary atmosphere. The shrine's vermilion torii facing the sea adds a charming touch.

(Translated by Google) What a spectacular view! ✨ I went in mid-August 2025. It was completely empty in the morning. I stayed overnight in Ashizuri, so it was a 7-minute drive to Ryugu Shrine. The drive there involves a mountain road and some narrow paths. There are some areas where you can pass other vehicles, but I imagine it will get congested if the number of cars increases. There's parking for 7 cars (sorry, I didn't count exactly). There are restrooms. The way there is mostly downhill, but once you get close to the torii gate, you have to climb some stairs. The area where the torii gate is located is narrow, so be careful. On the way back... I was out of breath, sweaty, and my thighs were shaking (lol). I took many breaks along the way. The footing can be unstable near the rocky areas, so I recommend wearing stable shoes. (Translated by Google) This was my second visit, and the view was once again breathtaking. If you're in the Tosashimizu or Ashizuri area, this is a spot you should definitely stop by at least once. Access is a little narrow in places, but there is parking for about 6-8 cars and a vending machine. The footpath to the site is fairly steep, with stairs and ups and downs in the hills, so I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Due to the location's orientation, it seems that the sun doesn't shine in very well first thing in the morning, so you can expect beautiful views from noon onwards, especially around sunset. If I have the chance, I'd like to visit at that time as well. The cliffs have been carved in multiple layers, and the rocks, riddled with beehive-like holes, look like sculptures carved by nature over an incredibly long period of time. If humans were to carve stone, it would only last a generation, but the sea and wind take millennia to complete their work. It's impossible not to be in awe. But as I gazed at it, strange associations began to form in my mind. The rocks looked like a lion's face, a turtle's back, or sometimes just a plain bun. It seems that nature is both an artist and a witty person. People give the rocks arbitrary names and comment on them in admiration. In the end, we are merely guests making a racket at a nature exhibition. Minokoshi Coast is an outdoor art museum of nature, simultaneously majestic and humorous. It seems common to have them delivered by boat. Like the Tatsukushi Coast, the topography created by waves and winds eroding the sandstone and mudstone coast is a spectacular sight. Perhaps because the coastline is complex, I feel that the scenery here is more unique and unique than the Tatsukushi Coast. Due to poor footing and taking too much time to take photos, I ended up rushing to the observation deck. Tatsukushi Beach also has places with poor footing, but this place is not on par with that. 😅💦 Everything is at your own risk, including collapsed passages and narrow rocky areas with no chains or ropes. The slope of the observatory is covered with moss and there are steep steps that can be slippery on rainy days, so be careful. The view from the top is surrounded by trees, so you can only see part of the coast. I turned the steering wheel without thinking. After going down the narrow road, we arrived at the port. A long time ago, Manjiro Nakahama was shipwrecked after leaving that port. Last year, I went to an eel restaurant in Asakusa that has been around since the Edo period, and it turned out that it was a restaurant that John Manjiro often frequented. This year, when I went to visit Natsume Soseki's grave, I saw Nakahama Manjiro's grave nearby, so I visited there. This time, on my way to the hotel I had stayed at about 20 years ago, I saw a guide to the birthplace. All of these actions are unplanned. This may also have something to do with it. Tatsukushi Coast is a hilly coastline featuring wave-formed rock formations and offering boat tours in an offshore marine park. The area is home to the Kochi Prefectural Ashizuri Aquarium, also known as Satoumi, which provides a modern and well-interpreted journey from the region's mountaintops to the ocean floor.
Great coastline walk. Tatsukushi Marine Park is home to one of Japan’s largest coral reefs. You can enjoy different type of activities in this area, walking, swimming, touring on a glass boat etc… My highlight of the day was the Ashizuri Underwater Aquarium. I visited in October and still, it was very hot, bring water, sunscreen and a hat.

Kochi Prefectural Ashizuri Aquarium is a charming destination for families and nature enthusiasts. The aquarium features an array of marine life, including sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles. Interactive displays on conservation and simulated tide pools provide educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. Additionally, the Ashizuri Underwater Observation Tower offers a unique retro design that allows guests to descend below sea level via a spiral staircase and observe local sea life through portholes.
Come here with your children on a sunny/cloudy day is the best! As you could view the aquarium and play near the ocean afterwards. +Pros: •1,700 yen for year pass is very reasonable. •They put fish name and information which is very useful. •New facility •Not so crowded (except holidays) Cons: -I felt like the turtle tank was quiet small for so many of them. -Not a lot of deep sea creatures. Tips: •They have feeding time, it’s fun to watch. Personally, I like the souvenir shop and ice cream. If you are planning to go to Ashizuri, it’s a must.

Nestled on the outskirts of Shimizu Nakahama, Takemasa Shoten is a charming store with a rich history, having been dedicated to crafting dried bonito flakes for over a century. During my visit, I indulged in their set meal featuring Sota-bushi and dried fish, which was an absolute delight. The crunchy bonito flakes paired perfectly with rice, while the sweet seasoning of the mejika enhanced its lean meat flavor—truly unique to this spot!
We ride our bicycles and pass by this place. The lunch set looks simple but is very delicious. Generous amount of Bonito flakes makes the rice taste so good.

This alone is enough to make several bowls of rice. Meals include dried fish set meals, thick-fried egg set meals, and burgers. I am very satisfied that I can get this for less than 1000 yen! The mothers who serve us are also friendly and warm. Inside the store, there are exhibits that give you a sense of the manufacturing process and history of Soudabushi. You can also buy souvenirs. Since the food is generally very flavorful, we recommend purchasing a drink at the same time as your meal. When I entered the shop, they let me try a bonito flakes with hot water poured over it, which gave it plenty of broth and was very flavorful and delicious! Bonito flakes are a fish called Souda-bushi, which is much smaller than bonito. They showed me the actual bonito flakes before they were shaved next to the register. The shop staff was kind and explained things clearly. I bought the bonito flakes and furikake I was looking for. The bonito flakes in the empty bottle that the shop staff recommended are dashi soy sauce that you make at home by adding soy sauce and topping it up. If you leave it in the refrigerator for 2 or 3 days, the bonito flakes will start to release broth, and it is recommended to add more immediately after using it. It will last for about a year. They told me that the trick is to break the bonito flakes with your hands before adding soy sauce so that they are always submerged in soy sauce. I would like to try it! There is a parking lot if you go from there, so it's easy to find. I get lost when I go through the Iburi tunnel. Once you park your car in the parking lot, go down the hill. Nice storefront, and of course the inside is also nice! There was a nice, kind and considerate female clerk, and a manager who was very particular about his work. And the main curry is the best! Even if you don't like spice curry, the keema here is fine! I think you will be satisfied. On this day, I had Iburikari's keema and shrimp curry. Personally, it was so delicious that I wanted a large serving of roux. You can add up to 10 times the spices, so please try it. The only thing left is coffee! I wanted to see it! I was always drawn to the smell of curry at the restaurant where I often visited for work, so I finally got around to eating there after I quit my previous job. The inside of the restaurant is styled like a real set meal restaurant, which is rare these days, and the cutlet curry is freshly fried cutlet topped with a delicious roux. The flavor is similar to that of Kitchen Nankai in Tokyo, which I really like. Due to the regional characteristics, the regular size at restaurants in this area is probably aimed at the elderly, but it's a little smaller, so it's the perfect size for women. For men, we recommend a large serving (probably about 0.8 cups of rice). It was an extra 50 yen for a large serving. The parking lot has space for about 4 light cars, so you can't go wrong with this set meal restaurant. Teppanyaki restaurant
Okonomiyaki restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Tosashimizu City along Chuo-machi shopping street, 元祖ペラ焼 にしむら is a charming little eatery that has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1955. Run by a warm elderly lady and her son, this cozy spot specializes in perayaki—a unique dish that you won't find anywhere else.
This is a small restaurant run by a nice old lady and a man who is probably her son. You can order yakisoba and perayaki as well as some drinks. Perayaki seems to be something you can only get in Tosashimizu so you should really give it a try if you get the chance, it's delicious. It shares some similarities to okonomiyaki but uses negi and fish cake as the main non-batter ingredient. Just name a price between 400 and 800 yen to order, the larger the number the larger your perayaki. You can also choose between soy sauce (shouyu), sweet, normal and spicy sauce to put onto your perayaki. You'll just get a can with a brush so you can put it on yourself as you eat the perayaki part by part. They gave us all 4 sauces so we could try them all. Just cut off a part of the perayaki with the spatula and then eat it directly from the teppan using a fork (the local we saw in there also used a fork, not chopsticks). It seems you can also order them for on the go by the way. If you are in the area and are looking for food, i strongly recommend giving this place a try.

Crispy and fragrant on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. The savory flavor of the chicken oozes out with every bite, offering a deliciousness completely different from charcoal-grilled dishes. ■Charcoal-Grilled Akadori Chicken This charcoal-grilled Akadori chicken is carefully grilled over charcoal. The savory aroma of the charcoal fire whets the appetite, and you can savor the juicy flavor of the meat. The simple cooking method really brings out the quality of the ingredients. ■Fluffy Grilled Yam and Crab This dish features grated and grilled yam, creating a delightfully fluffy texture. The gentle flavor of the yam and the savory taste of the crab combine to create a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth dish. ■Flying Fish Roe Pasta This is an original pasta dish made with Korean noodles. Okonomiyaki restaurant
Teppanyaki restaurant
I'm traveling across Japan and so far this has genuinely been my favorite restaurant. Positively delicious and everyone is super nice. 100% worth a visit!!!

(Translated by Google) I happened to come across this restaurant while touring around 10am and decided to stop in. I took a double take as I was surprised to see an okonomiyaki restaurant open at this time in the morning, then made a U-turn. The menu includes okonomiyaki, perayaki, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, and yakisoba yakiudon. The prices are also cheap for today, which is a relief. I ordered a mix of okonomiyaki. The okonomiyaki was cooked well and just the way I like it, so it was delicious. The proprietress was friendly and I was able to eat in a comfortable atmosphere. Next time I'll go for Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki or perayaki.

(Translated by Google) It was my first time eating Perayaki. It's chewy and filled with lots of chikuwa and green onions. They cook it for you so there's no way to go wrong! I recommend the sweet sauce. In this day and age, the most expensive item is 650 yen, with the average price being around 500 yen. It's so cheap that I feel like it doesn't need to be that cheap, but I guess locals spend their money on alcohol...

(Translated by Google) I had the shrimp okonomiyaki. The plump shrimp was delicious. The okonomiyaki was reasonably priced and the portions were decent. The owner was a warm person who seemed like a local. However, there weren't many plump shrimp and a dog barked out of the back door of the kitchen (which is usually closed?). The owner let the dog in right away so I think it was fine, but I was a little worried about hygiene.😅 (Original)

Kōchi Airport, also known as Kōchi Ryoma Airport, is named after the samurai revolutionary Ryoma Sakamoto. It offers flights to and from major Japanese airports such as Haneda, Narita, Komaki, Chubu Centrair International, Osaka International, Kobe and Fukuoka.
Pretty nice domestic flight-only airport. There's not much enough to see in the airport terminal except for the extensive souvenir shops and a few tataki restaurants. The waving gallery on the rooftop of the terminal building, like most Japanese airports, is very pleasant and surprisingly spacious, although the airport itself doesn't see that many flights. The airport bus to downtown Kochi is located at the first floor, just outside the airport terminal. I think given the proximity of the airport to the nearest rail lines (Gomen-Nahari line and the Tosaden streetcar - the latter ended short at neighborhood of Gomen), it could've been better if one of these was extended to serve the airport, giving affordable and more seamless connection to the rest of the city, and even far afield throughout other parts of the prefecture. FYI, if you are fond of unconventional souvenirs, you can find cute Tataki Pillow that is sold at the airside after the security screening.

Air Traffic Control(ATC) tower staff is sooooo nice,so kind, very cheerful, professional and clear to understand. especially for private jet pilots or private helicopter pilots, we often experience difficulty to repeat ATC phrase because of too fast speaking w uncleared voice. unlike other airports' ATC, Kouchi Airport ATC is the best. as for the airport terminal, not so many shops or res though, easy to walk around.

There is a sign on the piller,, but I did not see it. The desk clerk was great and directed me to the check-in counter.

It's not as lively as other international airports with malls and all that, but Kochi Ryoma Airport serves its purpose. It has enough restaurants and omiyage stores, many seats available to rest on, and of course clean and comfortable automatic bathrooms. Also, there are displays for Kochi's popular places where you can take photos and make you feel like you've already toured the place.

Pleasant journey, thank you Kochi Airport.

Small, mostly domestic airport serving south west Shikoku Island. Most of the flights are in and out Tokyo and Osaka, with a few others to places such as Nagoya. Good thing is that don't need to allow very much time to get from curbside to gate.
Timothy R — Google review
Small airport in Kochi City. You can access the city from a bus right outside the airport.
Nikki A — Google review
Usually not too busy. It is very near to the Faculty of Agriculture and Marine Science of Kochi University, about 5 minutes by walk. It will take about 30 minutes to reach in the Kochi city from here. Bus is available to go Kochi city and it costs about 700 yen. There are not any convenient store or super shop available at least 5 km around the airport. Please buy your necesssy snacks or drinks from the airport. There are no international flights from here. Flights in all prefectures of Japan is available, it is quite difficult to contact by English.
