Island
Sado Island, located in the Sea of Japan, offers a blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The island is home to the Gold Museum, which provides an immersive experience into the history of the gold industry and essential trading routes. Visitors can explore hand-dug tunnels from the Edo and Meiji periods that have been preserved to educate about the harsh conditions faced by miners.
Amazing island! Regular ferry running from Niigata, every 3 hours! First one departs at 6 am! Ride is approximately 2 hours long. Ferry fare is bit pricy, but worthwhile the experience! Incredible cycling destination with 270km of high quality roads circling the island, along the coastline !

Lovely island. Ferry is expensive if you take your own car.

Sado Island is a peaceful and stunning getaway off the coast of Niigata. From golden beaches and crystal-clear water to lush mountains and charming villages, every corner feels special. The history here is rich—you can explore old gold mines, atmospheric ruins like the Kitazawa Flotation Plant, and traditional culture that’s been preserved for centuries. The locals are warm and welcoming, and the fresh seafood is amazing. Whether you’re here for nature, history, or just to slow down, Sado Island will stay in your heart long after you leave.

Sado Kinzan (Sado gold mine)

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Sado Kinzan, also known as Sado Gold Mine, is a historic site on Sado Island that dates back to the Edo period. It was a significant source of gold and silver for the Tokugawa shogunate. The mine offers guided tunnel tours and features a museum showcasing gold and silver artifacts. Visitors can explore the historic buildings and tunnels while learning about the mine's production history.
Highly recommend to go here if you visit Sado Island. Lots of information provided in the mines and it was very cool to learn about their history. There were two mine routes, one had the Anamatronics and was older, and the other one was a bit more modern but also led to an outdoor area which had an amazing view of the Sado Gold mine hill. So much to see!!

Sado Kinzan Gold Mine is the largest producing gold mine in Japan. At present, this gold mine It has opened as a museum. To provide knowledge to tourists To be able to understand the production methods tools Which is shown with models that can be seen from the Edo period, when manual labor was still used, and the Meiji period. developed to use machines to save energy empoyyee , Inside the air is very cold. The entrance to the inner mine is well done and easy to walk. There is heavy gold that tourists can try lifting. It's very heavy. The souvenir shop sells merchandise only here. I bought gold-infused sake and gold-infused cheesecake. And everyone, don't forget to try it. Golden soft cream too, it was delicious.
Napassorn L — Google review
A gold mine with a lot of history to escape the summer heat. Inside the mine feels like around 16 degrees, slightly colder than in an air con environment. There are many mannequin robots inside that illustrates the time when miners are still mining for gold in this mine. It show cases the equipment and process that they use to get the gold from deep underground. The are 2 routes, the Sodayu right route is about 400m and the Doyu left route is about 1.5km. At the end of both route is a museum and souvenir shop where there is a real gold bar for visitors to try lift it up. The souvenirs are mainly packaged in gold themed packaging and there is also a shop beside that sells ice cream with gold flakes. It was an interesting experience, I find that the museum was less crowded during lunch time (12pm - 1pm) Visited 2 Aug 2025
De O — Google review
Walk through an era of time deep inside the mines. The mine is well explained with different activities that used to happen for the mining of gold. It's quite cold inside the mines. Was interesting to know that battery powered trains were used in those times to extract the ore from the mines. There is a small cafe that serves gold infused coffee.
Sam L — Google review
I love the whole scenery. Very fresh and peaceful. The staff was very helpful. She explained in English and suggested we choose Sodayu tunnel first (¥1,000) and if we want to do another one, we could at the price of ¥1,500. It is pretty cold inside the tunnel so please bring light jacket. Sodayu tunnel would take approximately 30 minutes. Each stop has descriptions in both Japanese and English. I read somewhere that there would be a complimentary tour guide but there was not. I saw there was audio available but without headsets. Maybe if you bring own headsets, you could listen through wifi and bluetooth. I wish I had more time to explore another tunnel and the whole area.

The core of the issue is Japan's failure to honor the public promise it made upon the 2015 UNESCO World Heritage inscription of its "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution." 1. The Promise (2015) In 2015, when Japan applied to have 23 of its modern industrial facilities, including Hashima Island (commonly known as "Battleship Island"), listed as World Heritage Sites, it faced strong opposition. The South Korean government highlighted the painful history of Korean forced labor at seven of these sites. Facing international criticism, the Japanese representative at the UNESCO meeting made a public statement to the international community, promising to take measures to allow an understanding that "a large number of Koreans and others were brought against their will and forced to work under harsh conditions in the 1940s at some of the sites." Japan also pledged to establish an information center to commemorate the victims. The World Heritage inscription was approved on the condition of this promise. 2. Breach of Promise and Historical Distortion However, Japan has not fulfilled this commitment. * Distorted Information Center: In 2020, the Japanese government opened the "Industrial Heritage Information Centre" in Tokyo. Contrary to its purpose, the center does not tell the story of forced labor. Instead, it exclusively glorifies the industrial achievements of the Meiji era. More critically, it displays testimonies and materials that effectively deny that forced labor occurred, directly violating the promise to honor the victims and representing a serious distortion of history. * Absence of On-Site Information: At the actual heritage sites, including Battleship Island, there are no signs, memorials, or explanations acknowledging the history of forced labor. Visitors are presented only with a narrative of Japan's industrial prowess, leaving them completely unaware of the tragic human rights abuses and forced mobilization that formed the dark side of that history. 3. International Criticism In response, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee adopted resolutions in both 2021 and 2023 expressing its "strong regret" over Japan's failure to implement its promise. The Committee has repeatedly called on Japan to faithfully fulfill its commitment to commemorating the victims and to present a balanced and comprehensive history. Despite this, Japan has yet to take any meaningful action. In conclusion, Japan made a solemn promise to the international community to acknowledge its history of forced labor in order to secure a prestigious diplomatic achievement. However, once the sites were inscribed, it reneged on that promise and is now actively promoting a distorted version of history. This has drawn criticism for undermining the authority and spirit of UNESCO and for being an unethical stance that disregards the suffering of its victims.

Well worth the price of admission. It’s relatively short, which is nice because a lot of the mining museums in Japan have really long tunnels with nothing in them, but this was packed with stuff. The animatronics were really endearing and some of them were really funny, and the miniature models at the end were incredible. The gift shop has a lot of cool and affordable omiyage if you need to get something from Sado. I came to Sado for astrophotography but this was a really fun thing to do when it was overcast during the day. If you come to Sado and it’s raining this is a must.
Conor — Google review
I wonderful historical sightseeing location. Both mines are very well kept and the staff is very helpful and polite. The admission price is definitely worth the money especially if you're doing both mines. The restrooms are very clean and the minds themselves are not very slippery due to the wet flooring. I highly recommend going to both mines if you're thinking about visiting the location.

Discover the allure of Sado Nishimikawa Gold Park, situated on the grounds of the former Nishimikawa Gold Dust Mine. This family-friendly attraction offers a unique opportunity to partake in gold panning, reminiscent of the Edo period pioneers. Visitors can sift for gold dust and take home their findings as a memento or fashion them into personalized accessories.
Very interesting experience to pan for gold dust! Despite our amateur attempts, we managed to get about 4-5 pieces each. The staff are very friendly and enthusiastic about helping visitors to pan. We followed their method and it was simple enough. A must visit for Sado island culture!
Michelle Y — Google review
It is a life time experience. we really enjoyed a lot, that collecting gold from dust. Must visited place. highly recommended this one. the staff actually showed how to collect raw gold from dust.
Fatima T — Google review
The place tells us the history related to gold in Sado Island. And you can dig your own gold out of here, which is fun. But you will understand the difficulty of gold digging. They give u 30 minutes for digging and I only got 3 particles only. You can buy a pendent and put the gold you find in that also.
Saurabh S — Google review
You get to see many gold related products and raw gold flakes. You also get to try a hands on experience in panning for gold in a course of your choice . The gold you managed to pan can then be made into an accessory of your choice for a small fee
ESZW — Google review
Fun here searching for gold dust. Either take the collected dust as it is or can put those in key ring for 1500 Yen. Entrance fee is reasonable.
Dipen L — Google review
I'm a gold panner from England and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience panning on site, found 11 pieces of gold😊 my family also found similar amounts, I also enjoyed the displays of rocks, tools etc.

A little pricey for the content of the museum, but the experience of panning for gold is quite rewarding.

Site of Kitazawa Flotation Plant

Mentioned on
8 lists
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Kitazawa Flotation Plant, reminiscent of scenes from Studio Ghibli's 'Castle in the Sky,' is a captivating site on Sado Island. Built in 1937, it was once Japan's largest ore processing facility, utilizing advanced flotation techniques to extract gold and silver from raw ore. Today, the overgrown ruins offer a mesmerizing glimpse into the island's industrial past. Visitors can admire the moss-covered remnants and capture enchanting photos during light-ups and projection mapping events.
This place is both historical and gorgeous! I spent a day visiting as many sites within the Sado Gold Mine area as I could, and I think this was even more interesting than the mine itself - there's a great museum with loads of historical info next door, a cafe, and great views of these old sites that were part of the gold production process in Sado.
Emily G — Google review
It was ok for a quick visit but underwhelming. There’s just a few explanation plates and that is pretty much it. You can’t walk in the structures only take photographs from afar, so there is that too. It’s ok to see it on your way after the gold mine (and it is open 24h), but I wouldn’t make a big detour for it or plan much time there.
Marc-André V — Google review
On July 29, 2025, my wife and I drove here. We were happy that entry was free. My wife imagined that they were like castles in the air. Learning that the site were being lit up at night. We joined a tour night tour to come again. The sight and sound were underwhelming. All left in less than 10 minutes.
Peter C — Google review
It is ok for a quick visit. Nothing much around here so it might be nice to come when the cafe Kitazawa Terrace is open. We went when cafe was close so nothing much to hold us here longer than 30 minutes. You can finish this off even less than 10 minutes if you are not keen for photos.
Oil C — Google review
Visiting the Kitazawa Flotation Plant felt like stepping into a real-life Ghibli scene. The massive concrete ruins covered in moss are both haunting and beautiful, telling the story of Sado’s gold-mining past. I went during the evening light-up, and the glowing colors made the whole place magical. It’s free to visit, easy to walk around, and great for photos. If you have time, grab a coffee at the nearby Kitazawa Terrace café for an amazing view of the ruins. Highly recommend for history lovers, photographers, or anyone who enjoys unique, atmospheric spots.
Bina S — Google review
This attraction was a facility used to processed ores from the gold mine in the past. Now it is abandoned at a sightseeing spot for tourists. This location is beside the road to the gold mine, I dropped by after visiting the gold mine. It is a pretty cool spot with all the overgrown vegetation. It looks like Lapyuta the floating castle from the film made by Gibli studio. It was pretty hot in summer and there's a cafe near this attraction where you can have food after walking around. I was tempted to visit at night but I am not really sure what time the illumination ends. Visited 2 Aug 2025

The light show on the building does not look like the advertisement. It was bright light instead of colored light

Senkakuwan Bay

Mentioned on
+6 other lists
Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Senkakuwan Bay, located in the Aikawa district of Sado Island, is a stunning quasi-national park consisting of five bays spread across three kilometers. The area features rugged sea cliffs, an iconic bridge, and offers breathtaking sea views. Visitors can enjoy rides on glass-bottom boats to explore the eroded cliffs and observe marine life through the transparent bottom. The coastal landforms are truly remarkable, with caves and rocky outposts formed by volcanic activity.
A must-visit place for when you go to Sado Island. The main activity is a boat ride -- the boat's floor has a transparent portion, allowing you to look down into the ocean and observe the coral and schools of fish. The scenery and breeze is amazing, and seagulls, who are non-hostile towards people in general, are heavily present, which is a delight as far as birdwatching goes. Also, note that the walk from the building, down to the boat port, is not short -- it's a long, scenic, downhill walk, with plenty of scenic detours worth taking, including lots of places from which you can look over the rocky cliffs (see images (the character is Torisumi Horou, a crested ibis)). The panoramic shot, for example, is taken from a bridge located by a lighthouse that you pass by on the way down to the boat port. Crossing the bridge leads to another viewing area, that also has vending machines available. Ultimately, most people spend around an hour here, but if you are keen on taking lots of photos, then you can spend as much as 2+ hours here, so do plan accordingly.

On July 29, 2025, my wife and I drove here primarily for lunch. Visiting just the observational point costed 500 yen/head. I tried to have a feel of rowing a tub boat but was going nowhere. Fortunately, I tried the real one elsewhere later on.
Peter C — Google review
One of the most beautiful places in Sado Island. The view of the Sea of Japan is mesmerising. There is boat ride that can be taken while you are at there, additional tickets need to be taken, is a must recommended experience to try. Right before you board the boat but the shrimp crackers they sell over there. The sea gull follow you while on the boat and you can feed them the shrimp crackers. The boat also guides you to show the local marine life though the glass bottom view from the boat. There is a small restaurant and souvenir shop as well.
Sam L — Google review
The boat ride is amazing. The fee for the boat ride and entry is around 1100 yen per person. You can cover this area in 1 hour. Free wifi is available.
A M — Google review
The view were scenic, the boat ride was not very fantastic as the sea was very choppy when we visit. Remember to check the sea conditions before deciding to take the boat ride, otherwise is a waste of money

I was a bit surprised that you had to pay to enter. But the small aquarium was nice. And the bay and lighthouse are good photo spots.

Seisuiji Temple

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Seisuiji Temple is a serene and captivating destination on the island. As you approach, a rocky staircase flanked by towering trees leads to the entrance, where you'll encounter a beautiful yet slowly decaying theater. The vermilion Guze-den Hall stands tall amid the tranquil surroundings, resembling the grandeur of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. The sound of the nearby river adds to the temple's peaceful ambiance.
This is an amazing location that has a ruin like feel as you enter the temple grounds, flanked by aged granite slabs and old cedar trees. As you walk into the first cedars flanked pathway you will come up into a curious temple hidden behind shrubs. Walking up stairs on the left and admiring the platform (similar to Kiyomizudera) that it's built on you will notice that the temple on top is really aged with its wood but still standing firm. This temple, while not huge has left me with amazement and worth a visit!

(Translated by Google) There is no sign for the parking lot, but there is an entrance a little past the mountain gate. (I have attached a photo of the entrance.) The road is a little uneven, so low-riding cars may scrape. It is a fascinating place that makes you feel as if you have wandered into the depths of Sado, which shows many different faces. When I visited, there was a beehive on the right side of the approach, so be careful. Aside from the stage, the carvings of the storehouse and the surrounding buildings are also worth seeing. Ryotsu Port is the main gateway to Sado Island, offering various transportation options such as jetfoil and car ferry from the Port of Niigata. The port features souvenir shops, dining spots, a bus stop for island tours, and a taxi stand. It also houses the Sado Tourism Association for travel assistance. Visitors can find clean facilities and friendly staff at the tourist information center. Additionally, there are car rental services nearby and buses connecting to Kanai.
This is a nice port of Sado with a small shopping street beside the ticketing. There's a cafe and food too. Good for a short visit before you board the ship back to the main island of Japan.

Futatsugame Beach

Beach
Futatsugame Beach, located at the northern tip of Sado Island in Japan, is renowned for its unique offshore islet that resembles two turtles. The beach offers a stunning sandy path connecting the shore to the rocks, creating a surreal experience as waves rush in from either side during low tide. This picturesque spot is also recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Sea-Bathing Spots, boasting clear waters and colorful rocks and pebbles scattered along the shore.
One of the most beautiful beaches in Japan, it's a joy to walk across to the other island and especially bask in the views while you are in the middle with the sea on both sides. The beach is also filled with colourful rocks/pebbles which is a unique feature in itself. Doesn't seem to be over crowded when we were there and it was superb on a cloudy day as I read the comments that the heat can be harsh in summer. Keep in mind that your vehicle has to be parked at the top of the hill at the official parking space and to walk down the hundreds of steps before reaching the beach. Vehicles cannot pass through on the small road close to the beach as it is fenced off.

Great view, amazing place to visit but be aware of long stairs to go down and up. If you are not confident in your knee, it’s not really a place to visit. “Beach” might be good for snorkeling but it’s very dirty. Probably a spot where all trash flows in with tides. I’ve seen better places to swim on this island, but worth a visit just for quick walk.

The beach at Futatsugame on Sado Island is one of my favorite beaches in Niigata. The water is clear, clean and refreshing. The view is beautiful at sunrise and sunset and you feel completely comfortable, relaxed and connected to the Sea of Japan. I was fortunate there weren't any big crowds, noise or disruptions and I really realized how tranquil, mezmorizing and beautiful Sado Island is. I really appreciated the kindness of the locals their and really appreciate and respect this area. I look forward to going there again sometime soon, maybe in the fall or early summer again.

This beach was an awesome way to relax in the ocean. You park by the hotel, grab your stuff, then walk down about 350 (!) steps to the beach. There’s a grassy area where you can set up at sun shade/relax on the grass as down at the beach it’s pretty rocky. At the beach area there was a restroom open but the shower room were locked - maybe cuz it was a weekday when we visited? Plus of it being a weekday was there were only 4 other people here so it was like we had a private beach. The water is crystal clear and the high salt content means it’s easy to tread water/float. You will need water shoes/sandals and it’d be nice to have snorkel gear or floaties to relax more in the water. But even without snorkel gear you will see fish swimming below you a bit. The water was pretty calm/flat here too. We spent a couple hours just relaxing and enjoying the water. This is one of the top 100 beaches in Japan and well worth the drive. If you want to stay longer you can camp here or book a room at the hotel here.
Sarah P — Google review
Beautiful clear water pebble laid beach where you can camp or just enjoy playing around. Its a really beautiful place but in July and August it is too hot. If you are sensitive to extremely hot weather it is better to avoid peak summer. Instead June will be the best time to go.

Beautiful view of both the Futatsu Game and Ohno Game. There is a camping ground where many people can set up their tents and enjoy swimming at the beach nearby. However, there was a lot of plastic garbage all over the beach! It was carried by the currents of different countries such as Russia, Korea, China and Japan.

Historic Walking Areas
Onogame, a colossal rock formation located on the northern shores of Sado Island in Japan, is renowned for its impressive size and striking resemblance to a coiled-up turtle. Standing at 167 meters tall, it is considered one of the three great rocks in Japan. The name 'Onogame' is derived from its turtle-like appearance and holds significance as it resembles the Japanese word for god or sacred island.
Onogame is an exhilarating easy to medium level trek to the top of the cape! Seems like not many people took photographs of the "summit" so let me share some perspective here. If you are there, I will highly suggest to walk all the way up as the views are amazing (of the cape and from the cape). It can get muddy and slippery if there's even small rain.
Rtexal T — Google review
I haven't been here, but I just watched the 1969 film "Goyokin" directed by Hideo Gosha. The film seems to have been shot at Onogame in winter, and it looks incredible.
Kurt R — Google review
We arrived in the late afternoon. Driving north along the coast from Sado Kinzan, we saw many uniquely shaped rocks and beautiful coastlines along the way. But when we reached Ōnogame, its grandeur was truly overwhelming—it didn’t feel like we were on a small island like Sado anymore, but rather at the edge of some distant continent. As it was close to sunset, I considered whether it was possible to climb to the summit, but didn’t get as far as looking for a route. If conditions allow and the difficulty isn’t too high, I’d love to climb to the top someday.

A short drive from the famous Futatsugame beach. It is a relaxing hiking area, in June the area will be covered with yellow blooms. Which is a super photographic view. You can have a really nice view of ocean from the trail. But this place gets super hot in summer, so please take care. If you are weak to heat like me go there in June. You will be able to enjoy the place thoroughly.
Tanima B — Google review
On July 29, 2025, my wife and I drove here. Apart from the landscape, there wasn’t much to see. We stayed around 10 minutes.
Peter C — Google review
We stopped off here on our drive to Futatsugame Beach. There’s a really nice walking path that goes all around the coast and in the center is an area that in spring is full of lilies. You can also walk up to the shrine with the rope between the rocks. A gorgeous area and nice stop off if you want to stretch your legs. There’s also a restroom and across the road a small hotel that I think serves lunch but we didn’t go in. The more adventurous can hike all the way up Onogame Island. The lilies bloom from late May to early June.

Ono-Kame means a giant grass turtle. Yes it truly looks like it. From the lodge just next to the spot, you can see turtle’s head and back covered by grasses! Very peaceful place colores by green grasses and blue sea:)

Sado Kaiten Sushi Benkei Main Branch

$$$$affordable
Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Sado Kaiten Sushi Benkei Main Branch is a popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Niigata Prefecture, known for its fresh and delicious sushi made with local ingredients. Despite the long queues due to its fame, the prices are surprisingly reasonable compared to similar quality in Tokyo. While the service may not be top-notch, this spot offers a great opportunity to savor high-quality yet affordable sushi.
A must try for anyone coming to Sado island! The quality of seafood is outstanding. There are loads of variety of fresh fish to try, and the rice is very fragrant. We enjoyed every minute of our time there for dinner, and each sushi was like a piece of art.
Michelle Y — Google review
The quality of the fish is excellent! I loved the sushi chefs, they were very kind and knowledgeable.
Julien C — Google review
OMG this restaurant actually became the highlight of my trip. This place serves such an amazing quality of fish including local ingredients. More than anything, the prices of all of them are so reasonable!! This quality of fish would cost 5 times more in Tokyo. Tho don’t expect any real service or friendly-ness. Purely go for great quality cheap sushi. Awesome place. Highly recommended.
Sayaka S — Google review
Absolutely delicious. Fantastic quality sushi and really good value. The otoro just melts in your mouth. Tip - come early for lunch or dinner or be prepared to wait. We visited during golden week so that may have increased the usual volume of customers
Sam B — Google review
This conveyor belt sushi restaurant is one of the top ranking sushi restaurants in Niigata Prefecture or in Japan. They buy fish from Sadogashima every morning, so the sushi items are really fresh and delicious! On top of that, the prices are very reasonable✨ However, because it is a very famous restaurant, the queue is too long... They don't take reservations either, so if you're going to the restaurant on the weekend, you'll have to get in line at least 30 minutes before the opening time or you'll be waiting a long time. If you can't get a chair, you can get a ticket and go to the seafood market or cafe next door to kill time until you get a call 😊
Sho N — Google review
It was a decent Sushi train restaurant. Wait times weren't super long and you could get a number from the ticket machine just like Kura Sushi. Though, I felt like it was a teensy bit pricey for it's taste. Otherwise, there was a great chance to try the local fish here
Kevin T — Google review
All of their menu’s price are reasonable! Fresh and great qualities.

Perfectly fine for adults-only groups, wouldn't recommend it for people with young kids. While we understand shops having rules against outside food, this was the first place we saw trying to enforce it for food for a 16-month-old. The sushi was fine but the lady who tried to forbid us from feeding the kid what the kid likes is an idiot. We ended up buying a sushi plate and mashing it up for the kid to placate the lady.

Chozaburo Sushi is a highly recommended restaurant on Sado Island, known for its fresh and delicious sushi. The friendly staff offers an English menu and the option to sit at the sushi bar or in a private room. It's popular among locals and tourists, often getting crowded during peak hours. The 3000 yen omakase set is a favorite, featuring the chef's best selections. Visitors praise the welcoming chefs and recommend trying the fish of the day as well as seasonal options.
Excellent bistro serving ramen, donburi, and sushi! The service is very friendly and the staff are very kind. We enjoyed the lunch and the shop accepts card payment.

Fantastic! I never had ramen at a sushi restaurant, but it was very good! Try sushi, buri katsu and ramen!
Amelia E — Google review
We arrived at 11 am and the place was full at 11:30am. A lot of locals and tourists at the restaurant. One of the most popular sushi restaurants in Sado Island. We ordered the 3000 yen amakase set, its also called chefs recommendation and they pick the best cuts of sushi. There were 3 sushi chefs and the omakase (chefs recommendation) is made by head chef and the average and good sushi sets are made by the second chef. The sushi cuts were very good but I think it’s difficult to taste the difference for average sushi eaters. I would recommend the 1900-2500 yen sushi+ramen set which comes with average togood grade sushi and one bowl of ramen.

We were recommended to come here by a local ♡ We arrived around 1pm and was able to sit down right away. Immediately, the chefs are welcoming and start conversing with you. The sushi set they recommended at fish of the day as well as fish in season. Absolutely delicious! Some fish just melts in your mouth! I recommend checking this place out :) it is totally worth it!

Nestled between the picturesque mountainous regions of Osado and Kosado, Restaurant & Bar Kosado offers a delightful culinary experience that reflects the natural beauty of its surroundings. This charming eatery is renowned for its delectable set meals, including mouthwatering hamburger steak and traditional Japanese-style pork cutlet. A standout dish is the Sado beef sirloin steak, celebrated for its exquisite marbling and rich flavor—thanks to the stress-free environment in which these cattle are raised.
I love Sado-gyu!!!!
Anony M — Google review
Perfectly ordinary food with no complaints, some of it more expensive than would normally expect, but that's "island price" for you. Otherwise there is a kitsch interior, a variety of foods, and friendly staff, all with the atmosphere of an American diner. We were recommended this place by a local, though I think it was less for the food and atmosphere and more for the convenience of the location and timeframe we were operating with. Otherwise it is completely adequate, and would have no problems going again, just that I would not rave about it

(Translated by Google) Restaurant Kosado in Sado City is a restaurant where you can enjoy Sado beef. The hamburger steak doesn't seem to be made from Sado beef, but it's exquisite, and the rich sauce brings out the flavor of the meat, making it an unforgettable taste. The fresh vegetables on the side were delicious, and the overall balance of the dish was great! What's more, the fluffy rice that is unique to Sado makes the meal even more special. For dessert, I ordered the ``Mix Parfait Jigokumori''. You may be surprised at how impressive it looks, but it's enough for one person to eat, and it's perfect for those with a sweet tooth. The large fried shrimp that other customers were eating was also appealing, and I would definitely like to try it next time. Delivery time is a little slow. Served with sirloin steak, I honestly couldn't imagine how delicious it would be. The keema curry made with 100% Sado beef has an elegant taste, and the hamburger steak, which is not Sado beef but has been popular since its establishment, is authentic. You can choose the size, so if you can share with side orders, we recommend it. All are of high quality. Everything inside the restaurant has a sophisticated atmosphere, and you can order take-out items such as homemade sweets for dessert and roasted drip coffee without any hesitation. I don't think there are many restaurants where you can eat soba that is as authentic as this one. The firmness of the noodles and the chin soup stock are just right, and the taste is memorable. However, my grandfather and grandmother, who are quite old, are running the store, so I don't want to push myself too hard. One serving of soba is small, so when ordering two or three, it's better to order the amount you want at once. It comes in a bowl similar to Wanko Soba. The temperature of the soup is low, using Sado's unique Ago soup stock, so there is no need to worry about it spreading. When I tried to order more soba noodles, I was told, ``It's going to take a long time,'' and I quickly moved on to the next customer without stopping. It seems that during busy times, it is difficult to place additional orders. Also, I had to wait in the aisle for about 7 minutes because the timing of paying at the checkout was bad. I thought it would be a good idea to match the timing of ordering and payment to the flow of the store (e.g. when the food is served). It seems like a good idea to visit with the intention of eating delicious soba while being considerate of the grandmothers and grandfathers who run the store. According to a friend, about 30 or 40 years ago, when Ogi was still flourishing as a tourist destination, there were some shopkeepers in Shichiemon, and there were many shops around this street, such as Kagura-ya and Kaneko-ya. Apparently it was busy. Amidst a nostalgic townscape that makes you feel like you've traveled back in time, the restaurant's historic facade makes you feel like you've traveled back in time. I arrived at 11 a.m. when it opened. I nervously stepped through the curtain. Because I hadn't made a reservation... (Apparently reservations are required.) There were no customers yet, and the proprietress came from the back... "I don't have a reservation, is that okay?" I asked, to which she replied, "We're OK now." For some reason, her kind words made me happy. When I entered the restaurant, there were table seats and a tatami room in the back that could seat about eight people. When I sat down at the table, I was served hot tea. A stove was lit inside, making it warm and cozy in the depths of autumn. On the table there was a chopstick holder, shichimi pepper, and wet wipes. The chopstick wrapper had the name of the restaurant printed on it. Even these small details are well-thought-out and impressive. I looked around, but there was no menu. "We only have cold soba," the proprietress said. When I asked how much soba I wanted, they brought me a bowl and said, "This is enough for one bowl." Not wanting to be disappointed, I ordered two. After waiting for a few minutes, it finally arrived. The bowl contained soba noodles topped with green onions. Quite simple. Then, the broth was poured over them. I slurped up a mouthful. Delicious. Chewy soba. It went down smoothly. The broth was also delicious. I couldn't stop eating. I finished the whole bowl in no time. I took a breath, then reached for a second bowl. Of course, I couldn't stop eating the second bowl either (lol). Maybe because it's homemade, there were a few short soba noodles left in the bowl by the time I finished. I washed them down with the broth. Whew. It was delicious. If it weren't for the four bowls of plain rice I had for breakfast at the inn, I think I could have had another bowl (lol). By the way, there's a parking lot two doors down from the restaurant. Please take care of your health and keep it up for a long time to come. Thank you for the meal. I'll come again! Ishihara Sushi is a pleasant establishment on Sado Island, known for its delightful sushi offerings. The staff is amiable and the ambiance is inviting, ensuring a comfortable dining experience. It is advisable to arrive early as seating can be limited due to its popularity among the local residents. The cuisine is excellent, with a great variety of delectable options to choose from. The interior of the restaurant strikes a perfect balance between cozy and stylish, creating an enjoyable atmosphere for patrons.
I loved this place, shame I only got to eat her once. Sushi was very fresh, very interesting and also good value. Restaurant itself was nice looking and the chef very welcoming and professional.

Very pretty inside. Initially seemed warm and relaxing. Staff distracted and distant. Waited 10 mins to get Bill. We got overcharged about $12. I think they billed the wrong table. NOT HAPPY

Upon arrival via jetfoil at 12:35, we got our hired car and parked in one of the three parking lots of the restaurant an hour later. My wife can eat a lot and the waitress was surprised. My wife was committed to finish all the seafood which costed more than a day of our car rental. We had fast food as restaurant closed at 2pm.

Matsuhama

Izakaya restaurant
When exploring the culinary scene in Ogi, one cannot overlook Matsuhama, a beloved gem among locals and visitors alike. This charming restaurant is renowned for its exceptional seafood and meat dishes, making it a must-visit spot. A highlight of their menu is the 'Ogi Irifune Gozen,' a special set meal crafted to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Ogi Port—reservations are recommended to secure this delightful experience.
This is a locals spot. You are not going there to be liked. You are going there to eat quite possibly the best sushi meal of your life for less than twenty bucks. This place alone is worth a trip to Sado. The best selections of many varieties of fish including tuna are found in the waters surrounding this island. I repeat, Im quoting the top tuna buyer at Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. “The most expensive tuna fish are caught in the waters surrounding Sado Island.”. I didnt know that when I was there I just walked out of the place baffled at paying $20 for a meal that would of cost hundreds of dollars in New York. It was really that good. The owner and his son are nice people. I walked in as a foerigner. I spoke Japanese. My neighbors befriended me and we spent 3+ hours chatting. In that way I got friendly with them. The owner smiled at me when I past him a few days later. If you are a tourist. Just be polite and dont take it personal if they aren’t warm to you. They wont cheat you and you are in for an amazing meal.

There is a price list for set meals and drinks, but there are no prices displayed for today's snack menu written on the board. It cost 8,600 yen for two people to have a small amount of alcohol, assorted sashimi, scallions, fried oysters, fried horse mackerel, fried white fish, aged Tochio, miso octopus, rice and miso soup. It's delicious and satisfying. Unfortunately, the grilled fish set meal was sold out. The rice was perfectly cooked, and after a disappointing experience with Sado Island rice at another restaurant the day before, I was surprised by the rice's natural sweetness and umami. The pickles were particularly outstanding, even among the best I've ever tasted, and I was deeply moved by their lingering flavor. I'm intrigued to discover the secrets of their production. Some reviews have criticized the restaurant for being "unsociable," but the staff's natural demeanor, welcoming and sincere in their responses when greeted politely, exudes a warmth and sincerity befitting a rural setting. Inside, elderly local women enjoyed pleasant conversations, and I even saw them kindly showing a tourist couple how to use the water dispenser. The warm, welcoming atmosphere was truly pleasant. This wonderful restaurant, satisfying both its food and atmosphere, will definitely make you want to return whenever you visit Ogi. Nestled right in front of the Ryotsu Ferry Terminal, Sushi-no Uohide is a hidden gem that sushi lovers must not miss. The chef, who is also the owner, pours his heart into crafting exquisite sushi using locally sourced Koshihikari rice and fresh toppings from the nearby Ryotsu Market auctions. A standout offering here is the "Sado's Local Fish Nigiri Sushi Set," featuring seven expertly prepared pieces made from that day's freshest catch.
One of the best sushi I had since a long time in Japan. Run by a family, this restaurant has been renovated recently according by the way it looks. High prices but worth it. We took the special nigiri and some a la carte. Extra fresh, the ama ebi and the Toro were fantastic. Global note is low so I read the previous comment. It seems previous customer were not pleased by the old man behaviour. Well, he might seem a bit cold, but the waitresses were very kind. And I do not mind as long as the food is delicious, which was the case! I will come back here for sure!

I eat sushi a lot but this was too expensive for the quality. 1,500 for one piece of fatty tuna. This isn’t Ginza. It was nice but not 1,500 yen nice. The other set dishes we had were fine enough but probably slightly overpriced. There isn’t much else in the area.

The generous meal sets are reasonably priced and known for their ample portions, with the hire katsu set being particularly recommended. While fresh oysters may not be available in the summer off-season, the fried oyster and roasted squid are popular choices offering good value for money. It's suggested to opt for katsu or meat dishes over sushi.

After reading reviews, I was pretty scared to try but it was the only one opening at that time. The restaurant was pretty busy. Maybe it is close to the port so people come for a quick meal. To be honest, the tables and atmosphere didn’t look that clean but my tummy could not wait any longer. We ordered: * Katsudon set - nice and yummy * Fried oysters - lots of oysters and yummy * Sashimi set - just ok. Expected a bit more freshness. I think this restaurant offered nice meals for its price. Not wow wow but not bad at all.

Sights & Landmarks
Niigata Airport, located in Niigata, Japan, is the main airport serving the Niigata Prefecture and surrounding region. Operated by the Niigata Airport Authority, it's conveniently situated about 10 km south of the city center. Despite its small size, it offers international flights and is known for its efficiency and cleanliness. Visitors have praised its convenient location for accessing nearby ski resorts and have appreciated the variety of products available at the souvenir shop.
The airport in Niigata city is very clean. It serves both local and international flights. There is also plenty of shopping and dining inside. The area is quite large, but because there aren't many flights, it looks quiet. You can take a bus from Niigata station to the airport directly or vice versa, the schedule is quite frequent. Theres also free wifi in here.
Wahyu H — Google review
Iis extremely disappointing that, as an international airport, the staff are unable to communicate in English. The female personnel at the baggage inspection area were particularly slow and treated every passenger with excessive suspicion, as if everyone were smuggling drugs. She did not understand a single word of English, which made the process even more frustrating. This was, by far, the worst airport experience I have ever had. If there is no capacity to communicate with international travelers in English, the airport should not be accepting them. It reflects poorly on Niigata and is truly shameful for a facility representing this city.

Niigata International Airport is undeniably at an incredibly convenient location! As a Niigata native living in New York, I've flown the JFK-PuDong, China-Niigata route via China Eastern Air several times in recent years to visit my family. Surprisingly, this route is almost as fast as flying through JFK-Tokyo-Niigata, owing to the airport's small size. The compact facility provides a significant advantage, resulting in shorter waiting times at check-in counters, security, immigration, and baggage claim. Unlike larger international airports, there's no need to arrive three hours in advance; even arriving two or one hour before departure is sufficient. Moreover, the airfare of China Eastern Air is less than half of what Japanese carriers charge, making it a budget-friendly option. Additionally, other major airlines offer direct flights to Niigata from Seoul, Hong Kong, and Harbin, and obtaining tickets for Niigata airport is a breeze, with available seats usually easy to find. Niigata airport boasts another advantage - its proximity to Tokyo. A short 20-minute shuttle bus or taxi ride connects the airport to the center of Niigata city, and from there, Tokyo is just a swift 2-hour Shinkansen journey away. In comparison, traveling from Narita airport to Tokyo takes one hour, and from Haneda, it takes 30 minutes, plus additional waiting times of about an hour. If you're looking to save money and explore a less-known route during the Tokyo Olympics, consider spending a night in Niigata and taking an early morning Shinkansen to Tokyo. This lesser-known route can be a great way to experience both cities while enjoying the convenience and cost savings it offers.

We took the first direct flight from HK and received a warm welcome there. The airport is small but clean and spacious. The souvenir shop had a variety of products.

Small, but convenient international airport for accessing nearby ski resorts in Hakuba area. Direct flight available by Cathy Pacific from Hong Kong to Niigate every Wednesday and Saturday. New experience for flying to Niigate rather than Tokyo (Haneda and Narita)

Small but efficient airport. Staffs are very friendly and fast. Some nice shops around. They should provide some flat rate fee for long time vehicle parking. .
