Hachijo Botanical Park

Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
Hachijo Botanical Park, located in Hachijo-jima, takes advantage of the warm climate to showcase a diverse range of plants from both local and international origins. With approximately 100 varieties of tropical and subtropical plants, including hibiscus and bougainvillea flowers, the park offers a vibrant display. The pathways, adorned with red volcanic gravel, create a tropical ambiance for visitors to enjoy.
A nice free botanical garden with very cute animals. You can feed them leaves. The animals was the highlight!
Ryusei H — Google review
Hachijo Botanical Park is a truly beautiful and lush hidden gem on the island, offering a unique experience that's a must-visit for any nature lover. The botanical garden is incredibly well-maintained, with various paths winding through diverse tropical plants and trees, making for a wonderfully relaxing stroll. What truly sets this park apart, however, is the magical phenomenon of the glowing mushrooms. Seeing these bioluminescent fungi softly illuminate the darkness was an absolutely unforgettable and almost surreal experience. It adds an incredible layer of wonder to an already peaceful setting. During the day, the air is so refreshing, and the nature is vibrant. This park perfectly blends education with a sense of wonder, making it ideal for both leisurely walking and exploring. It’s an experience you won’t find just anywhere, especially with the chance to witness the natural glow. The glowing mushrooms make it feel like stepping into a fairy tale.
T P — Google review
Would highly recommend. Very peaceful gardens where you can hear lots of birdsong and see a wide variety of plants and scenery. There is also an area fenced off with small dear, called "Kyon" in Japanese which is a nice place to sit and enjoy the surroundings. It's only a 20 minute walk from the airport and the visitors center is also well designed for children so I would recommend a good 2 hours to fully enjoy the park if you have the time.
Anna P — Google review
Much bigger than expected and free! If you ask in the information center for English guides they have a few brochures. A must on Hachijo.
Jon Y — Google review
Good amount of ground to cover. Free parking. Most of the attractions were closed by the time we arrived (want to say 3 or 4 PM). The deer enclosure needs to be larger for the animals.
J G — Google review
Small muntjac deer in an enclosure are very friendly. Small but beautiful fish tank in the visitor center with many local reef animals.

(Translated by Google) It's a modest tourist spot. I've been traveling to Hachijojima about once a year for about 30 years, but this was my first visit. I was satisfied to learn about the island's ecosystem and learn about things related to it. The Hachijojima Muntjac is also cute ❤ I learned about Hachijojima Muntjac from the old manga Gaki Deka! It was a much smaller deer than I had imagined. There was a stuffed specimen at the Pricia Resort Hotel, which went out of business a long time ago, but the living Muntjac was completely different from the image I had of it. If you're here, I recommend seeing the Muntjac of Hachijojima. The tropical botanical garden was also a good learning experience. The way bananas, vanilla, and other tropical foods grow, and the traveler's tree (Tabibitonoki) were spectacular. The glowing mushrooms at the visitor center can be seen in an instant if you close the curtains, so I think it's a good idea to see them. There are also large stuffed turtles on display. In fact, when you go fishing on Hachijojima, you sometimes have the chance to see large turtles. Especially when fishing at night, I have seen turtles with heads as big as humans. Just looking at the stuffed turtles is impressive. I would especially recommend this to people visiting Hachijojima for the first time.

(Translated by Google) Hachijo Botanical Garden is a public facility run by the government, yet it's surprisingly packed with content. Despite the free admission, the garden is expansive and well-explored, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. What particularly impressed me was the abundance and diversity of plants. Surrounded by the impressive trees and flowers unique to the tropics, it felt like I'd wandered into another world. The greenhouse area was particularly impressive, allowing me to see rare tropical plants up close, and it was full of learning and amazement. The garden is also dotted with little delights, such as a delicious gelato shop. When you feel a bit tired from exploring the garden, it's a delight to enjoy a cool, sweet gelato. There's also an area where you can observe glowing mushrooms at night, a fantastical sight unique to Hachijojima. The different charms of day and night are also fascinating. As a government-run facility, I had a slightly stuffy impression of it, but it was actually a relaxing and exciting tourist spot. In addition to the impressive plants, there is also a combination of gourmet food and unique exhibits, making it a place that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, from children to adults. It is a recommended park that is definitely worth stopping by when visiting Hachijojima.

Miharashi-no-Yu Hot Spring

Mentioned on
5 lists
Day-use onsen
Day spa
Miharashi-no-Yu Hot Spring is a popular onsen in Hachijojima, offering indoor and outdoor baths with stunning views of the coast and ocean. The facility has separate bathing areas for men and women, each with its own unique view. It's recommended to visit two days in a row to experience both sides. The hot spring is accessible by bus, but there are no nearby dining options, so bringing your own food is advised. Green tea is available for free.
The outdoor onsen has an excellent view of the sea. I visited during the evening and enjoyed looking into the ocean. You can see few whales at far also.
Bhanuka S — Google review
A nice Onsen overlooking the sea, too bad abit cloudy. I was using the Bus-pa 2 days pass using mobile app. The network here wasn’t that good. But managed to connect to an unsecured wifi. The towel here cost $300 yen. Advice to bring your own, in my case a souvenir.
Steven S — Google review
Awesome spot for 500yen only, with a stunning atmosphere and view and a friendly staff. But it gets packed fast. Was lucky to enjoy it by myself for a while before so many people showed up.
Fiso — Google review
There's 2 bathrooms for men and women as same as other onsen. One of them has extremely good ocean view. And the rooms exchange based on the number of date, even number or odd number. So I recommend you to come here 2 days in a row. And bus comes just few times a day. There's no place to eat around here. So I recommend you to bring some food. Green tea is free of charge with self-service.

The hot spring which represents the island. As it is common in Japan this hot spring divides men and women for their baths and it changes daily who can enter the "beautiful" side of the hot spring. However, I have been to the both sides and I'd argue that both are equally beautiful. You can enjoy the ocean view from both sides so no worries there.
Mantas J — Google review
We enjoyed the beautiful star while in hot spring! We will visit again!
Akiko K — Google review
Very nice outdoor pool Onsen, which actually was second or third best in Japan. Views are great, facing south, so while you can’t see the sunset directly, you can see the sun go down behind the mountains. As they switch the pools daily between gents and ladies, should go at least twice. Admission was 500 yen, so it’s on the pricey side, but I’d say it’s definitely worth it twice.
J K — Google review
No frills onsen with a fantastic view of the mountains and ocean. Note that while we had the onsen pretty much to ourselves (mid-June), the onsen is reportedly packed during most other seasons. This onsen does not have food or onsite massage. Just the onsen with a Hachijoujima towel you can purchase.

Visitor center
The Hachijo Visitor Center is a contemporary art museum that showcases historical, cultural, and event-related information about the botanical park and Hajijo Island. The center offers unique and diverse learning experiences on the nature and origins of Hachijojima, including an impressive video screening area featuring sea creatures. Furthermore, each exhibition theme features handcrafted introductory texts alongside actual specimens, creating a spectacular impression for visitors. Visitors can also explore the carefully maintained botanical garden divided into themed areas for an authentic nature experience.
(Translated by Google) If you continue up the hill without entering the botanical garden parking lot (pedestrians ✕), you will find a nearby parking lot. I felt that the official route was to visit here first and learn how to enjoy the nature of Hachijojima. The greenhouse is at the far end from the botanical garden, so if you're looking for that, you might want to use the visitor center as a starting point. Whale sighting information is also updated daily. (Translated by Google) These are my impressions from a visit quite some time ago. There are no shops or anything, but there is greenery even in the crater, so beautiful is probably the best word to describe it. It doesn't require much physical strength either. At the time, we had it all to ourselves, and even now only people who can make it to the island come, and since their main purpose is probably to see the sea, you can enjoy the view from the mountain without the crowds. The ranch on the slope along the way is beautiful, and the cows are adorable. Whether you're halfway up or on top of the mountain, it all contributes to the beautiful scenery☺️ (Original)

Outdoor Activities
Sokodo Beach, located on the stunning island of Hachijo-jima in Hachijo-machi, is a unique gem that stands out as the only man-made beach on the island. With its striking dark sand and well-maintained shower facilities, it offers a perfect spot for relaxation and fun. This beach is particularly famous for its incredible sea turtle sightings, making it a must-visit for snorkeling enthusiasts eager to explore vibrant marine life.
This beach is very safe, with lifeguards constantly on watch. Since it is located within a bay, even when the waves are rough in the open sea, it's still possible to swim in the bay. Sometimes the sun can be quite intense, and the lifeguards seem to work hard under the heat. Unlike other beaches, the bay has a sandy bottom, so there aren't many fish, but you can still spot plenty near the nearby rocks. This is one of the safest swimming areas on the island. Because of the sandy bottom, there’s no risk of injury from sharp marine life, and you can float freely on the water. The beach is equipped with showers and restrooms, making it very convenient.

Nice clean green emerald water, but can get dirty with plastics and other debris... Volcanic beach with black sands is tiny. Mountain view is nice. Beautiful viewpoint overlooking the west side of the island! There is a parking spot and you can cross the street to see the amazing view! No need to buy ticket at all. It is free access. (Translated by Google) Climbing Hachijo-Fuji and circling the Ohachi crater with my 6-year-old son. It was clear and calm up to an altitude of 700m, but near the crater, there was nothing to block the wind, it was covered in clouds, and winds were strong, reaching 8-10m/s. My 6-year-old son said it was scarier than Mt. Hoken. The ridge was narrow, and it was my son's first experience bushwhacking with sideways gusts. He couldn't maintain a stable position in the strong wind, and it looked quite challenging, so we climbed to the summit and gave up on circling the Ohachi crater because it was dangerous. We can try again someday. I think it was a good thing we did, as it would have been terrible if we had pushed too hard and caused an accident for my child. There was almost no wind impact from the trailhead to the crater area where the Ohachi crater circumambulation is taking place. However, in the Ohachi crater circumambulation area, even though there was nothing to block the wind and the ground was calm, there was considerable wind impact and the ridge was narrow, so please be careful. On a clear day, you can enjoy spectacular views of Miyakejima, Mikurajima, Aogashima, and Hachijo Kojima from the crater. In Makoto Shinkai's ``Your Name,'' there is a scene in which the main character, Mitsuha Miyamizu, offers kuchikamizake to a shrine on a small island in a swamp inside a caldera. There is Sengen Shrine inside the caldera of Hachijo Fuji, and you can also see a small swamp on the central cone. The location is quite close to what the anime envisions. This time, I climbed the mountain without proper equipment, so I descended the mountain without visiting the Sengen Shrine or visiting the pots inside the caldera. It was sunny and extremely hot at the bottom, but there were clouds near the top. Sometimes the clouds parted and we were able to enjoy the view of the world below. At this age, climbing more than 1,000 steps was quite a challenge. I was sweating profusely. (Translated by Google) The view from the top of the mountain is amazing. The crater was clearly visible, but there was quite a lot of vegetation. Although the mountain trail is well-maintained, there are no easy places to take a break along the way, and the stairs and slopes continue in a straight line, making it quite tiring. You can drive up to No. 7, where Fureai Farm is located, so I think even beginners can climb this mountain with a little effort. However, be careful of sudden changes in the weather. Once you get to the top (or more accurately, the Ohachi Meguri junction), there is a course called Ohachi Meguri that goes around the crater. It looks like it will take about an hour. I walked halfway, but the weather suddenly looked like it was going to get bad, so I gave up on going around the bowls. Actually, it seems that you can see a wonderful 360 degree view when you go around the bowls. It was a shame to give up, but I think I made the right decision at the time because I was hit with gas on the way down and I couldn't see anything around me. The weather in the mountains is changeable. Hiking area
The Summit of Mt. Hachijo-Fuji is a breathtaking destination that offers stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby island of Hachijo Kojima during daylight hours. As night falls, visitors are treated to a mesmerizing starry sky that invites deep contemplation about life's mysteries beneath its royal blue expanse. This hike is accessible for beginners to intermediate climbers, making it an ideal adventure for those looking to explore nature without extensive experience.
(Translated by Google) It takes just under an hour from the trailhead to the summit, but from the fork in the road to the crater and the rim, there is a narrow path that makes it impossible to pass each other if you go clockwise. It is difficult to go back, so once you start going around, you need to go around once, and if you go around slowly, it takes about an hour and a half. There are short trees growing, and you will have to go through some parts. Trekking pants are essential to avoid injury from scratches from branches. Also, the wind is strong when going around the crater, so the temperature feels low. You may get hot from moving around, so bring a jacket and water to adjust it. However, the scenery is spectacular, so if you have a certain amount of physical strength, I think you can go around. If you can walk a little on a daily basis, you can go around, but it seems a little more difficult than beginner level. There are no toilets. When climbing, we recommend that you be prepared with proper clothing and hydration. I only brought one plastic bottle, but to be honest, it wasn't enough. Also, when we reached the top of the mountain, the wind was so strong that it was difficult to walk properly. Fuji, but after about 5 minutes I started to regret it. There are signposts at appropriate intervals, so there is no need to worry about getting lost. However, the path is in terrible condition. The path is covered with vegetation, just like an animal trail. This makes it impossible to see the condition of the road underfoot. It is muddy in places and your feet will be scooped up. When the vegetation stops, it becomes a scree field. There are slopes on both sides of the path, so if you fall, what will happen?... Still, it may have been easier since the weather was good. Plus, we could see Hachijo Kojima clearly, and we were able to see the first flight take off. So, as a pioneer, I strongly recommend the following. Wear sneakers at the very least. If your lower legs are exposed, you may get injured by the hard branches of plants, so wear long pants. There is nothing to block the sun, so wear a hat. In summer, carry at least 1 liter of water. The Fureai Ranch is a suitable place to visit for those who are physically fit and equipped with a touring bike. It is advisable to have a decent low gear and general fitness to climb with the bike, although walking it up is also an option. The advantage of ascending with a bike is that you can later descend via a different route, adding variety to your experience.
Hachijofuji Makino & Fureai Bokujo truly embodies the beautiful nature of Hachijojima. The expansive ranch offers breathtaking panoramic views that stretch endlessly across the ocean and the surrounding island. It's a remarkably peaceful and relaxing environment, a perfect escape from the ordinary. Watching the cows graze freely in such a picturesque setting is incredibly calming. The opportunity for interaction with the animals, including curious goats, adds a lovely, unique dimension to the visit, especially for kids. The fresh, refreshing air and the sheer scale of the landscape make it an ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon. It's a fantastic photo spot for capturing the vastness of the nature and the charm of the farm animals. This must-visit experience offers not just a view, but a profound connection to the island's serene beauty and agricultural life.

I climbed with my touring bike definitely only recommend that if you have decent low gear and general fitness though you could walk it up with the bike I suppose. Benefit of going up with bike is that you can go up, then down later via different route for variety. Nothing overly special about this farm though you can get pretty close to the cows and calfs if lucky. Decent sights of the area in good weather. I also used this as a visit spot to spend bit of time waiting for the clouds to clear (if you time well clouds can disappear during afternoon) I gave it 4 stars mainly because this is the last stop for toilet or drinks before the hike and crater loop so I assume most will get here on the way up.

(Translated by Google) Hachijojima is on the path of typhoons and has been frequently hit by them. For this reason, it is customary to surround houses with stone walls to protect against wind damage. This stone wall is one of the most elaborate stone walls on Hachijojima. Round stones of uniform size are piled up using an elaborate technique called "Roppo-zumi". Since the building that surrounded it was a camp, the effort and cost may not have been of concern. These round stones were collected from Yokoma Beach (Yokomagaura), about 1 km away. It seems that the exiles were paid one rice ball per stone to transport them. It is a cheap reward if you like. However, walking 2 km round trip consumes about 90 calories of energy. Since they also carry luggage, the consumption is estimated to be 1.5 times that, 135 calories. And since one rice ball is about 200 calories, it seems that the energy balance was somehow positive (although this is just a calculation...). By the way, there is a condition called "topophobia". It is a condition in which people have a strong aversion to clusters of small holes or bumpy things, but it seems that the size of the bumps that people react to varies from person to person. Some people are frightened by the size of a beehive, while others have difficulty taking close-up photos of compound eyes. And for me, the size of this stone wall seemed to be the "size." Gritting my teeth, I managed to take this much, but that was the limit. This is the result of having the opportunity to see a valuable cultural asset. I'm sorry. 2025.5.19

I visited this restaurant about 10 years ago, Ryozanpaku, on Hachijojima Island, and they served very good food. I missed the chance to drive the ring road at the top of the island on a clear day, so I would like to go there again!
Jims G — Google review
The place for island's cuisine. Apparently they use fresh fish (caught in the morning) to serve the island's sushi every day thus the servings are limited. They also have ashitaba beer available, fried ashitaba, and other goodies! On the side note, it seems to get busy during the later hours so it's best to come a bit early. No wifi, but menu is in English (!). Parking is nearby.

A must visit restaurant with delicious food and great service. Very popular (for a good reason). Open till late in case you can’t get a reservation. Shimazushi, gratan, ashitaba tempura are among the highlights.

(Translated by Google) I visited the counter alone at 6pm on a weekday, and the food served was Hachijojima ingredients, and the izakaya (more Japanese-style) mainly featured local cuisine. Hachijojima is famous for fishing, and the quality of the fish dishes was as expected. Personally, I thought the soy sauce with crushed island chili peppers on the sashimi was punchy and unique, which was fantastic. I was sitting alone at the counter, but the chef was considerate and talked to me about various things about Hachijojima, so I had a great time. Considering that many of the local ingredients on Hachijojima are rare, and that ingredients from the mainland are more expensive than in Tokyo due to the boat fare, I felt that the price was reasonable and the quality was high. It is common knowledge that restaurants on remote islands are not of a high standard, but Ryozanpaku is among them and is highly recommended.

There was only one day available during my stay, and I was able to make a reservation on the condition that I would be seated once the previous guest had finished. I had sashimi, braised bonito cubes, island okra, and kusaya, and finished off with island sushi. The sake flowed well and it was absolutely delicious. It's no wonder that this popular restaurant is the pride of Hachijojima!

Sushi restaurant
If you find yourself on Hachijojima, a visit to すし処 銀八 is an absolute must for sushi lovers. This long-established restaurant specializes in island sushi, a unique local delicacy that dates back to the Edo period. Here, you'll experience the delightful combination of sweet rice and soy sauce-marinated sushi rice enhanced with karashi instead of wasabi—a fascinating twist that showcases regional flavors.
Ginpachi, a long-established sushi restaurant on Hachijojima 🍣, is a famous place for island sushi. If you visit Hachijojima, I highly recommend trying their island sushi. You will be amazed by the different taste and flavors compared to Edomae sushi. I recommend it!

Very disappointed and it was terrible! Because overall there was nothing special and I gusss it was below average. I was especially surprised that sea urchin was the worst one since it was very stink! Never ever recommend. FYI I did not have Shima zushi, just had Nigiri, traditional Japanese Sushi. And the owner was so strong character, be careful.

We stopped by without a reservation on a Monday night and were seated right away. The sushi, maguro maki rolls, kappa maki rolls, and the Island sushi were all delicious!! The service was great and although we do not speak Japanese we were able to order and have a little conversation with the staff. Price was very reasonable too!

Awesomely delicious and reasonably priced. Get the shimazushi, a local specialty. The fatty tuna is not too shabby either! It is recommended (required?) to make a reservation, even for lunch. You need to tell them your menu choice at the time of reservation. The menu is displayed with pictures on their website.

POSEIDON

Italian restaurant
Nestled on the picturesque Hachijojima island, POSEIDON stands out as a chic dining destination that perfectly blends style with a warm atmosphere. This Italian bar is beloved by both locals and visitors alike, offering an array of delectable dishes such as pasta, pizza, and succulent beef steaks. One unique feature of POSEIDON is its welcoming policy for fishing enthusiasts; patrons can bring in their freshly caught fish to be expertly prepared right at the restaurant!
Very good option for dinner! No table charge. A bit difficult to find in the dark, go slowly

(Translated by Google) I made a reservation and visited POSEIDON because I wanted to eat somewhere special on a night in Hachijojima. POSEIDON was a restaurant that lived up to my expectations. The space, with its subdued lighting and the warmth of wood, has an atmosphere that makes you forget for a moment that you are on Hachijojima. The atmosphere is sophisticated, unlike that of a tourist destination, and time flows comfortably and quietly. Each dish is carefully prepared, with a gentle flavor that brings out the quality of the ingredients. The Caprese has an exquisite balance of mozzarella, tomato, and olive oil, and has a refreshing taste that is perfect for the first dish. The chicken liver has a fluffy texture with no odor. The pumpkin gnocchi has a gentle sweetness of the pumpkin and a creamy sauce that matches well, and the more you eat it, the more your heart relaxes. Each dish is not flashy, but rather sincere, and it is deeply moving. All the dishes were exquisitely balanced, with a hint of urban flair. The staff were friendly and the natural distance and attention to detail was comfortable, making it the perfect dinner to end our trip. This is a rare restaurant where you can feel a slightly "urban" aftertaste during your island trip. It was a wonderful place that I would definitely like to visit again on a special evening. Thank you for the meal. The flight was said to be about an hour, but it arrived in no time. *It seemed far away on the map. *The boat ride takes 5-6 hours. A rental car is a must. Summer is a busy season, so I made a reservation at the last minute, and I was finally able to rent a car from the sixth rental car company. The accommodation is a log house that just opened in 2023, with a nice wood scent, and the toilet and kitchen were brand new and very clean. There is air conditioning, so you can stay comfortably. You can see the stars very beautifully. The location is great during the day. The bedding was clean and I slept soundly. Since it is a bed-only accommodation, it is better to find and make a reservation for restaurants in advance. *Unfortunately, the adjacent restaurant was closed 😭 I definitely want to go next time. We stayed at an accommodation by the sea for three people. For 3 or more people, bedding is 2,200 yen per person. If you are a group of close friends, I think you can go up to 4 people. 3 people was just right. As for sightseeing, We didn't climb Hachijo Fuji, but we could drive to Fureai Ranch, which is on the way, in about 15 minutes. The weather was good, so the location was great. The cows were grazing and they were very cute. ※You can go around Hachijo Island in just under 2 hours, so you can go to wherever you want right away. At Sokodo Beach, the seawater is clean and you can see the bottom. It's not a very paved beach, but there are some rugged areas where you can feel the nature. We recommend wearing sneakers to go into the sea. You can enter Uramigataki Onsen for free, which is great. ※Must check the entry times. It's a mixed bath and you have to wear a swimsuit. My first impression was that the area around the building and the entire property was overgrown with weeds, so much so that it was difficult to see the curbstones and the protruding water valve covers. The log cabin was generally well-cleaned, but I did have two concerns. 1. There was severe red mold and limescale in the shower stall. 2. There was a stain on the bedsheets. It was around the waist, so even though they had been washed, it didn't bother me. Unrelated to cleaning, but I have two issues related to insect control. 1. There was a gap, probably because the window was poorly fitted, and there were signs that insects and geckos were getting in through it. 2. I was told that if ants were a concern, they could be killed with an ant spray, but I think the hotel should take measures that they can do first. I think that even just cutting the weeds on the property would make a difference in how insects thrive. If you can identify where the ants are coming from, you can take measures such as spreading repellent, so I would like you to consider this. The log cabin rental was equipped with the bare minimum of amenities and seemed reasonably priced. (By the way, I wonder if bath towels were charged at one per person for a three-day, two-night stay? I wonder if I would have received one if I had ordered one separately. I wanted to inquire but unfortunately the timing was not right, but it was something I was curious about.) Udon noodle restaurant
Soba noodle shop
Meidai Ikkyuuan is a renowned eatery located on Hachijo Island that specializes in ashitaba soba and ashitaba udon, both of which feature the utilization of "Tomorrow's Leaf," a vitamin-rich plant found abundantly on the island. Visitors can explore an array of ashitaba-themed souvenirs at nearby shops, but this restaurant offers a unique opportunity to savor freshly made ashitaba soba, an experience not readily available elsewhere.

Meidai Ikkyuuan is a restaurant in Hachijo Island specialized in ashitaba soba and ashitaba udon. "Ashitaba" means "Tomorrow's Leaf" and is a plant typically found in Hachijo Island, very rich in Vitamin B. At the souvenir shops, you will find all things "ashitaba", but this restaurant is the chance to eat a fresh, homemade ashitaba soba - which you won't find so easily anywhere else. (Translated by Google) ``Akakokko'' This is our last meal on Hachijojima. Authentic island cuisine is served within the airport. There is still time for the return flight, but there are only a few places on Hachijojima where you can adjust your time. Draft beer (750 yen) and "Hachijojima soba set" (2,000 yen). "Hachijojima Soba Set" is a set of island sushi and Asuka soba. After a while, the ``Hachijojima Soba Set'' and draft beer were brought out. This trip to Hachijojima was my third time eating Shima Sushi. Each one is quite different in taste and size of toppings. The island sushi here only serves island sushi as souvenirs, so it doesn't have the deliciousness of freshly made island sushi. That can't be helped. This is my first time eating Asuka Soba. I was able to enjoy my meal while reminiscing about Hachijojima. By the way, the ``Akakokko'' is a bird the size of a thrush, whose plumage color is similar to that of the Red-bellied Chickadee. Its habitat is the Izu Islands, and it is said to live year-round, especially in the southern part of the Izu Islands, such as Hachijojima, Miyakejima, and Aogashima. It is designated as a bird endemic to Japan that lives year-round only in Japan, and its population is apparently decreasing due to regional development. (Translated by Google) A restaurant inside the airport. We have everything from noodles to set meals, snacks, and local burgers. They also serve daily set meals at lunchtime, so it's probably used by people on the island, where restaurants are scarce, especially airport staff. I took the opportunity to order something from Hachijojima, so this time I ordered the 1,500 yen island fish set. All dishes feature fish cakes from Hachijojima, fried fish, and croquettes, and come with rice covered with special seaweed, soup with fishballs, small side dishes, and pickles. Although they may look plain at first glance, they are all quite delicious. In particular, seaweed rice can be the star of the dish on its own, but if you serve it with a drizzle of soy sauce and a little bit of wasabi, it becomes an outstanding dish. On top of that, there are a number of fried foods, so I think this is a specialty that can be grouped together as ``Hachijojima Noriben''. I also felt that. The bonus photo is of the Asuha soba (1000 yen) that my companion ordered. In addition to the soba noodles being stuffed with Asuka leaf, when the season comes, the kakiage is made into Asuka leaf tempura. There aren't that many restaurants on the island, and the prices are relatively high due to distribution issues, so it's hard to say that the quality of the food is high, so it's probably one of the few places on the island that can pass the mark. By the way, the restaurant closes at 4:00 pm, so if you are taking the last bus (5:25 pm), please arrive early. I had the Asuka Leaf Charshu Ramen, and while it was simply seasoned, the Asuka Leaf soup was soaked through and it was delicious. If you sit by the window, you can see the runway, and the atmosphere is decent, so I think it's a pretty good restaurant considering its cost performance. Asoko Sushi offers superb sushi at an affordable price, with a friendly and knowledgeable sushi chef who takes the time to explain the ingredients and even provides pictures of the fish used. The quality and freshness of the fish are outstanding, making for a delightful dining experience. While there is a slight drawback of tobacco smell in the restaurant, it does not detract from enjoying the delicious fish. The owner is also very welcoming, and reservations for their special chef's sushi are highly recommended.
Awesome sushis at an affordable price. The sushi chef was also very friendly and bothered to explain what sushi was made out from what fish with pictures of the fish and even detailed explanations of what is the recommended best order to eat them. Loved the quality and freshness of the freshly cut fish, although I wished the restaurant was smoke-free since there was a heavy tobacco smell, but nothing that prevented from enjoying the delicious fish.

During my recent adventure to Hachijojima, I had the pleasure of dining at 藍ヶ江水産 工場内 『地魚干物食堂』, a charming eatery that specializes in local seafood and dried fish. Just a short flight from Haneda, this restaurant offers an authentic taste of the island's culinary delights. The kusaya, known for its strong aroma, was surprisingly delightful here—flavorful and easy to enjoy with a drink.
Dined in twice for dinner. Got the steamed snapper and some rice the first time, karaage chicken and local sashimi platter the second. Both meals were amazing, especially the steamed snapper, and I enjoyed the rustic feel of the place. Also enjoyed looking at the seafood posters on the walls. Definitely highly recommend

I visited this restaurant with a local person, and the atmosphere was lively and pleasant. The space is large and open, which creates a nice, relaxed vibe. The Japanese tea is self-service, and you can order by scanning a QR code available at the table. We had a small hiccup with the ordering system, but the staff quickly helped us resolve the issue, which was much appreciated. The prices for the food are on the higher side. I ordered the lunch fish set, but unfortunately, the fish was quite dry and difficult to swallow. I was hoping for a more flavorful experience, but it didn't live up to my expectations—actually, it was less satisfying than many chain restaurants in Tokyo. Perhaps I was just unlucky with my choice. Overall, the atmosphere and service were good, but the food didn't quite hit the mark for me this time.

On my first night, I stopped by Himono Shokudo, a restaurant that also handles dried fish and seafood processing. Hachijojima's specialty is kusaya, but honestly, I was a little wary of its strong smell. However, the kusaya here is surprisingly easy to eat, packed with flavor, and pairs perfectly with alcohol. Adding mayonnaise enhances the flavor even more. Apparently, the secret to their delicious kusaya is the carefully cured liquid used, using lean horse mackerel and flying fish. They also offer a wide variety of fresh local fish and izakaya menu items. The spacious restaurant, attached to a factory, has an open and comfortable atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking to sample the island's delicious fish. Hachijojima Airport

Airport
Hachijojima Airport serves as the primary gateway to the enchanting island of Hachijojima, conveniently located just a short five-minute drive from a charming folk craft store. This airport features a compact three-story terminal that houses arrival and departure lobbies, souvenir shops, restaurants, and tourist information on its second floor. The third floor offers an excellent vantage point for watching aircraft take off and land, although it is accessible only by stairs.
A nice small airport. You can directly flight with a big airplane to Tokyo Haneda. You can also eat local food here and but of course Omiyage.

Hachijo-jima Airport offers incredibly convenient travel to and from the island, making it well worth the cost. A round-trip flight from Haneda typically runs around 20,000 to 30,000 JPY, depending on the season and booking time, which is a fair price for such a unique destination. The airport itself is remarkably efficient, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience from check-in to boarding. Unlike larger airports, there are no long queues, and the security process is quick. The on-site rental car services are excellent, allowing you to pick up your vehicle immediately upon arrival, which is crucial for exploring the island. The facility is always clean and well-maintained, and the small café offers reasonably priced snacks and drinks. You can also find a good selection of souvenirs at the shop. For the value and ease of access it provides, especially when you consider the direct flights connecting you to Tokyo, this airport is a fantastic part of the overall Hachijo-jima adventure.

This airport has a beautiful view on the front side, because it faces Mount Hachijo directly. The airport is quite large for an airport on an island. The facilities are complete, the parking lot is also spacious, it was built in 1926 by the Imperial Japanese Navy, currently airport operations are managed by the Hachijo-Jima civil authority.

A small airport; what else to expect. That being said, there is a restaurant inside with some tasty meals, a rather big souvenir shop for airport's size, an info center with English speaking staff. Some booklets in English are available as well. Lastly, you can ascend to the second floor and go to the balcony to see off the plane.
