Lookouts
Sakurai Futamigaura's Couple Stones, also known as 'couple rocks,' are a scenic spot featuring two large rocks connected by a Shinto rope. Located about 150m offshore from the Sakurai Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture, these rocks are enshrined as a sacred place and represent the god of marriage. The male rock stands at 11.8 meters while the female rock is 11.
a good place to visit if you rent a hotel or resort near here. not highly recommended for those who stay in fukuoka center then making a trip here cause it quiet an effort to do so. check the weather on your phone with Itoshima location before you go to make sure you are on the sunset time. mine were 19:31 so i missed it
Hà D — Google review
The view here is beautiful, though there are long lines if you want to take photos. We visited as part of a day tour, which I think was the best choice since the location is quite far. Coming here on your own might be a bit challenging.
Exy — Google review
This spot is usually packed with visitors, making it tough to get a clear photo—whether of the scenery or yourself. I got “lucky” when a sudden downpour cleared the area. Everyone left, and I managed to capture a few shots amidst the heavy rain and strong wind.
YippeeKewl — Google review
A very quiet and scenic spot to be. The sea was beautiful, though it has just stopped raining when e arrived. There are 2 parking spots across the road, and the one with the gantry does have a toilet in case anyone is looking for one after a long drive. It was empty when we arrived at around 10am, but there were tourists started coming in by the time we left. So, I reckon it will be good to visit early.
Hun T — Google review
About an hour drive from Fukuoka. Plenty of parking just opposite with public toilet. You need to queue to take picture we waited about 30 mins.. but totally worth it.. nice seafood restaurant nearby window table longer waiting time waited about 45 mins again totally worth it..
Susan W — Google review
The torii located at the beach such a sight to behold. You can just stare at it while listening to waves as they crash on the rocky coast line of Itoshima. Very relaxing and a very good photo spot. Just a couple of minutes away from Hakata Station. Easily accessible by bus or a combination of train and bus. Got here at around 9am, and is not yet packed with tourists. There are two restaurants nearby where you can eat eel and fresh seafood bowls. Toilets and vending machines are available.
Boojie R — Google review
Really cool spot and it wasn't too busy in middle of October. Plenty of paid parking. See the time for the sunset and go 1 hour before to guarantee good shots.
Pedro S — Google review
Nice place, but really tourists oriented! Didn’t have much freedom, some portion of this area was close to public.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Sakurai Shrine is a serene wooded shrine complex located in Itoshima, Japan. Built in 1625 to enshrine the spirit of Ise Jingu, it stands out with its traditional wooden color, setting it apart from other shrines. The shrine offers moments of tranquility as visitors listen to the wind through tall trees and breathe in the fresh forest air.
It was so peaceful to come here. I was able to make it with 2 buses from kyudai-gakkentoshi station. I would love to come again. I was able to walk all the way to the sakurai futamigaura couple rocks down at the beach. It was about a 35 min walk.
Leggo M — Google review
Beautiful Shrine But only recommend to go by car because walking from the nearest bus stop is a bit far and tiring
Iára C — Google review
Beautiful during cherry blossom season – from the parking area to the shrine itself. This shrine is connected to the Wedded Rocks on the nearby coast. The goshuincho is beautiful too. The inner shrine has lots of beautiful art. Overall a very peaceful place to visit.
Rachel B — Google review
🌸 Visited Sakurai Shrine 櫻井神社 in Itoshima in January 2024, notable for its traditional wooden color. This distinct feature sets it apart from the more common red and orange hues of other Japanese shrines, adding to its uniqueness. The shrine is quaint and tranquil, ideal for a short visit of around 30-40 minutes. Just a 2-minute walk up the hill, I found Iwatomiya Shrine, which was under renovation at the time. Including these shrines in your Itoshima visit offers a unique and peaceful cultural experience 🏯🍃.
Kwong T — Google review
See, hear and smell the peace of history by going through the magical portal of this shrine.
Dong D — Google review
Very serene and peaceful place even if you’re not Shinto. I often go for the festivals and to take a break from the busy ltoshima life. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a wild monkey roaming around! Avoid eye-contact yo.
Josh G — Google review
Over 20 years in the area and I finally discovered this secluded gem. Probably super crowded on weekends and holidays but middle of the week, nobody. Take a short walk into the shady woods and you'll find more stuff, stay low for spiders if you're tall. Plenty of parking.
Brent B — Google review
So beautiful with the cherry blossoms blooming. A peaceful place just a short trip away from the town center.

Beaches
Keya Beach is a popular sandy beach in Itoshima, offering shallow waters suitable for swimming and kayaking. It is one of the few officially designated swimming areas in the area, making it a safe spot for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). During the summer, beach huts known as uminoe offer SUP board rentals geared towards leisure activities. The water is clean and clear, perfect for swimming even at a distance from the shore.
Clear and refreshing water. You can also shower for 500 Yen. 2 hours from Fukuoka. Nice, cozy and familiar place. The village is cute
Goran M — Google review
Came here on 10.09.24 by taxi after visiting Sakurai Shrine torii. The beach is so quiet on the weekday. The sea is so calm. What we didn't know is that it's jellyfish season! They are transparent except four very long red brownish tentacles. There is no warning sign on the beach so I took the risk to swim. My right arm got stung pretty badly when getting out of the water. We found a restaurant called Bay Rock at the end of the beach offering food, drinks, toilet and shower. The staff was very nice to give me ice and itch cream for my arm. Took a bus to go back to Itsohima train station (please check the bus schedule as it's not frequent).
Melissa W — Google review
The beach was breathtaking! Went here alone from Fukuoka and it wasn’t crowded. There are also public bathroom nearby and you can purchase shampoo and soaps there. It is clean and pretty!
Jecha M — Google review
Chilly beach, but not for swimming; strong wind, few people there. Good place to relax. Parking lot is available for free.
Dr. P — Google review
Beautiful beach not too far from Fukuoka. End of the season so was pretty empty on a gorgeous, sunny afternoon. SUP boards for rent and a nice beach bar for some drinks. Crystal clear water was so refreshing.
Cameron H — Google review
Gorgeous!! It was a very short and cheap bus ride to this beach. From the bus stop it’s about a 10 min walk and then all of a sudden you’re hit with this amazing view of turquoise water and beach. I cannot believe my luck that it’s nearly empty I only wish I remembered to bring my bathing suit to swim. The water is shallow and calm and warm. I picked up some shells and saw baby squid!
Amber M — Google review
Near the sea/beach in fukuoka. Wow! Surprisingly!😊🥰The parking lot is free and no entrance fee. The water is clean but there are many tree branches. The sand is nice but there are quite a lot of branches and leaves but even so we had fun and enjoyed swimming. The water is cold and it’s perfect for the hot weather🥵
Mats O — Google review
I used to really like this beach, but the BBQ places have overrun almost all of the sand. They blocked off large portions from the parking lot where you can't even walk down to the beach. As this is a public beach, I don't understand how they can block off so much of the sand paths to get to the water. Frustrating experience for an otherwise beautiful location.

Keya no Ohto

Mentioned on
7 lists
Keya no Ohto is a stunning coastal viewpoint in Itoshima, offering breathtaking views of the beach from its imposing ridgeline and a 64-meter cave below. The hike to the ridge involves some basic bouldering and rock climbing, making it suitable for athletic and experienced climbers. Accessible only by boat from April to November, the basalt cave within Genkai Quasi-National Park provides an otherworldly experience as visitors can venture inside depending on sea conditions.
Due to the strong wind and wave, ferry ⛴️ was cancelled.
Alice L — Google review
Visited Saturday at 3p, and despite listed as open, boat ride was closed. Be aware that wind can close this at random. Still a pretty place to visit
Jennifer L — Google review
Mysterious lava cave??? Worth a visit to see if this leads to where Totoro lives!!!
Cheeyuan L — Google review
Such a cool way to see the amazing lava formations and sea cave. The boat ride is very adorable. The staff was nice.
Dudeone T — Google review
The booth selling tickets to the cave was near to the bus stop. On the boat, they have a recording on the area in Japanese, and the basalt cave was quite near. Depending on the sea conditions, you may be able to go into the cave - I was able to touch the walls a little as the boat entered the cave's mouth. It feels like the underworld is straight ahead, with the darkness beyond. I recommend you visit this place and stay for the food in the area.
The M — Google review
Amazing scene, if you take the tour boat
Zack L — Google review
The sea view is incredible!🥹
Merry A — Google review
Amazing place as the cave cause by sea erosion. The cave layered wall. About 20 minutes of boat ride from Keya no Oto boat pier. Boat pier take about 48 minutes of car drive. By train to JR Chikuzenmaebaru station and take Showa bus Keya Line to end of bus stop Keya bus stop. From bus stop take 10 minutes walk. If the weather is good and no strong wave and wind, the boat captain will bring into the cave.

Palm Tree Swing

Mentioned on
7 lists
ヤシの木ブランコ, or the Coconut Tree Swing, is a must-visit spot in Itoshima, offering a unique swing installed between two palm trees at a scenic beach. This picturesque location provides an opportunity to relive childhood memories while feeling the gentle sea breeze. The swing has become an Instagram favorite due to its photogenic appeal. Visitors can enjoy various types of swings and capture stunning photos without long queues, especially if they arrive early in the morning.
This is a very beautiful spot, perfect for taking lots of great photos. There’s also a zipline you can try. We stayed here for almost two hours. There’s a restaurant nearby, and a paid parking lot across the street (300 yen / 40 minutes). If you dine at the restaurant, the parking fee can be discounted. But since we didn’t eat there, we’re not sure how good the food is.
Hsiu T — Google review
Just a short distance away from where I had lunch (魚庄UoshyoObaru), the Palm Tree Swing is a fun and unique spot to visit. Nestled by the sea, the swing is set under a tall palm tree, offering a perfect spot for photos with the ocean backdrop. It’s a relaxed, scenic spot that adds a touch of adventure to your day—whether you’re enjoying the gentle swing or simply taking in the view. It’s a great place to unwind, snap some photos, and soak in the natural beauty of the area. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!
J C — Google review
The Palm Tree Swing offers a charming and relaxing experience, featuring a variety of swings where visitors can unwind while taking in the tranquil ocean views. This scenic spot is perfect for capturing memorable photos, allowing guests to enjoy both the refreshing sea breeze and the picturesque surroundings. Conveniently located, the area provides ample parking across the street and includes a nearby restaurant for added convenience.
Sorlo S — Google review
Must go! I should bring my swimming gear… it’s super fun and my kids spent 2 hours play time there. Lots of facilities.
Ho D — Google review
A nice spot for some photos with plenty of swings and some other setups. Definitely worth paying for the 300yen for parking, which is across the road.
Hun T — Google review
Nice but very touristy. Good for about 30-45 minutes.
Ian R — Google review
It's simply a beach with no proper shower facilities. It's only suitable for taking photos and not worth a visit.
Pam E — Google review
Touristy spot worth a picture or two. Kind of weird/out of place things like gondola and shark.

Beach Cafe SUNSET is a laid-back trattoria with an oceanfront terrace, offering seafood pasta, coffee, and cocktails. The cafe was opened in 1990 by a passionate surfer who wanted to provide a space for visitors to enjoy stunning sunsets. It has become a must-visit spot in Itoshima, Fukuoka, especially during the Sunset Live rock music event held every September.
Food is amazing!!love the food, ppl and the vibe in sunset cafe. Hope i will visit again!!keep it on💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻My friends and i are really enjoy it👏🏻👏🏻

Papa Says: 👍👍👍+ The locomoco hamburg patty was the best patty I've ever had. The photos speak for themselves! View was impeccable, service was friendly and nice, and might I say, the locomoco hamburg patty 🥩 was the best I've ever tasted in my life, no exaggeration. The patty was coated with a housemade sauce that was rich in umami, and the patty was seared to perfection — it maintained its slight crispiness despite the sauce, and the interior of the patty was soft and juicy. Best eaten hot, the pairing with the sunny side up and rice really is the perfect lunch you can have, while enjoying the beach view at 20°C spring temperatures. Imagine yourself in a scene from Hometown Chachacha, with soft jazz playing in the background. Truly an experience. Pork curry was delicious as well, but the hamburg definitely stole the show for me.
Yumma P — Google review
Beautiful beachside restaurant to enjoy a meal. Free parking available in front of the establishment. Food-wise, it was decent but not warm when it arrived. Their Mont blanc and coffees was exceptional though it made it up! (Do note that it's a pet friendly cafe)
Kelly Y — Google review
Amazing view, the staff was really kind and welcoming, the drinks were tasty
O R — Google review
Enjoyed the 4 cheese pizza and spicy chicken breast. Nice view at sunset.
Alan B — Google review
Food was amazing! We order the loco moco and garlic shrimp! Highly recommend!
Shelly L — Google review
This restaurant is the best thing about Palm Beach...service was excellent and the food was delicious. It's not affiliated with the chain of restaurants to its right and that a good thing. Do yourself a favour and eat here
Marcelle H — Google review
Second visit here and still fab. Great terrace overlooking the beach. Lots of shade and dog friendly. Food is great but bigger than normal portions for Japan! Today we had the jerk chicken with a side of chilli fries - monumental. No dinner required later for sure! A chilled out spot in a great location with really good food. Nice.

ICHIRAN ICHIRAN no Mori Itoshima

$$$$affordable
Ramen restaurant
Ichirannomori is an informal ramen restaurant known for its specialty tonkotsu ramen in a rich pork bone broth. While visitors are not permitted to enter the central kitchen, they can observe parts of the production line through glass windows. The kitchen produces an impressive amount of food daily, including 90,000 bundles of noodles, 100,000 servings of pork, and enough broth for 70,000 bowls of ramen.
We went specifically to get ramen here. It's located inside the Kyushu University campus, about an hour or so from Hakata. It can be easy to get to if you have an IC like Sugoca. The buses leave from Hakata Station every hour so you have to time it very well (Hakata Station A). You have to get on another bus inside the campus and that's a timed bus as well. It was worth the trip. We saw the little museum that told the story about the company and its ramen. We also got pics from the photo booth and stuff (ramen, sauce, and spice powder) from the shop.
Rio S — Google review
There is only limited option of ramen and that's with pork broth and meat. Unfortunately due this I could not eat... Probably some bad luck by as well the souvenir machine with miniature collection I wanted at least since I cannot try their food accepts only 500yen coin. Mine took my money and no miniature went out...leaving bit sad..
Kika — Google review
Ichiran no Mori is about an hour away from Fukuoka. The noodles were excellent and the broth was rich and delicious. Although I'm not a big ramen person, the experience was still really nice. We were lucky to not have a long wait, which made the visit even better.
Merry A — Google review
This Ichiran had a zero minute wait time which is uncommon but understandable. The unique part about this store is that there is an ‘Ichiran museum’ inside about the making of the noodles, to details about the bowl and locations, like the pentagonal shape. It is located in the middle of the Itoshima greenery so it feels quite out of place since most Ichiran stores are in the city.
Lucas L — Google review
I liked the ramen but I thought I would see something else from Ichiran, just went there to eat, there is nothing else to do sadly, you can read some of the history of the company but other that that you just go to eat some ramen
Carlos T — Google review
The Ichiran Factory is huge and very nice, definitely a must-visit for Ichiran fans. Even though the place is big, it can still get pretty packed, which just shows how popular it is. There’s a mini museum-like room where you can learn more about Ichiran’s history, and you can also see the inside of the factory through the glass, which is really interesting. They also have a shop where you can buy Ichiran products to take home. Highly recommended if you love Ichiran and want to experience more than just the ramen.
Josh — Google review
We love Ichiran ramen so we were delighted to visit the place and see how they make their noodles. As always, the ramen was superb.
Kane C — Google review
Really good ramen, definitely worth visiting if you are passing by.

Sakurai Futamigaura, also known as Futamigaura of the setting sun in Ise, is a renowned scenic spot designated by the prefecture. It features a pair of rocks connected by a shime rope and set against the sea. This picturesque location is often considered one of Japan's top 100 beaches and sunset viewing spots.
About 50 mins drive from Hakata. Short queue for the photos. Parking across the street 10 mins for free or ¥300 for 60 mins. Accept coins, notes or card. But don’t know how to operate the card machine. 😋
Alice L — Google review
The view was great since the weather was good. People lined up in front of the white torii for pictures. There was also a small stream in front of the of stairs as entrance. Visited here in April, 2025.

Shiraito Waterfall is a family-friendly destination nestled in the city of Itoshima. The 24-meter high and 12-meter wide waterfall is located about halfway to Mt. Hagane, offering a serene atmosphere surrounded by hydrangeas and nature. Visitors can enjoy fishing opportunities, delicious food with a view of the waterfall, and the chance to relax amidst the high-level minus eons generated by the falls.
This place is beautiful, n felt so cool under the hot weather in summer.... Nice experience but the place isn't that big, you can visit many places around this side in a day. We stayed for around an hour.
V W — Google review
Beautiful water fall spot where you can fish for trout… an enjoyment day out for the family. Try to arrive early before 10am if u are driving!!
Cheeyuan L — Google review
Shiraito Falls is a really good tourist spot and definitely worth visiting. The waterfalls are very beautiful and the surroundings are peaceful, making it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. They also have a special kind of soba here that you should definitely try, it’s really delicious and unique to the area. You can also go fishing nearby, and the fish tastes amazingly fresh and good. Overall, it’s a great place to spend time and enjoy both nature and local food.
Josh — Google review
Beautiful little water fall, it was nice during the weekday because almost nobody was there. They offer food and have drinks, you can even pay 3000 yen to go fishing and catch your own fish.
Nathan O — Google review
View is extraordinary, food is nice and simple, staff is friendly to help, price is reasonable, recommend to have your personal vehicle/transportation when coming here. The nearest bus stop is far and still gotta wait as the bus timing gap is long.
Rahim I — Google review
the waterfalls was so-so... ive seen better... but here u can fish and have them cook for u... also there is a place you eat somen (soba ramen) soaked in waterfall water .... definitely a memorable experience... big parking space... we went during silver week so there was a bit of traffic but the parking conductor was efficient and fair.... to me, its a must go for the experience.. also the view from the top... breathtaking... i think its gorgeous during ajisai season
Ariana A — Google review
Okay.... Visited 7 March 2024 Free admission and free parking. There are 3 levels of parking, the upper level is closest to the waterfall. The area around the waterfall is very small. There's also trails that can be hiked if you have time. The drive up the steep narrow road is crazy, long and dangerous. There's two different roads to the waterfall, one is ridiculous, the other is much better and safer. Google map will probably choose the worst one. There are way too many blind spots and not enough mirrors on that road. Please drive carefully. Not recommended on weekends or holidays. Best on weekdays and right before closing. On my visit the restaurants and small fishing pool were closing, so I can't comment on those. The waterfall itself is surprisingly easy to access and photograph if there isn't a crowd. It was very empty when I visited. Beautiful and relaxing view with fresh air. Will calm your spirits and take away your worries. Overall: Recommended to visit but choose your visit time wisely. This place looks like it will be a long wait on a busy day. I can see visitors getting stuck in line on that long hill.
Jay J — Google review
It was not too crowded for a weekend and the restaurant where you can "catch your noodles" coming down the water I the bamboo pipes was pretty cool!

Raizansennyoji Taihioin

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Raizansennyoji Taihioin is a peaceful place of worship with extensive gardens and numerous stone statues. The temple is renowned for its brilliant autumn foliage and beautiful art inside the main building. Visitors can enter the temple for 400 yen or choose to admire only the gardens for 100 yen. It's recommended to take public transportation or carpool as parking can be challenging.
The main maple tree issue is not having much leaves now, but the others is still beautiful in red and yellow. I love this place too much. But, for tourists, it’s difficult to come here and return. From the station, I called a taxi ( around 3000 jpy). For the return, I tried to book uber but no car. I had to ask a woman( in the souvernir shop) to call me a taxi. Firstly, she tried and said there’s no taxi available. So we thought about asking other local people who have car to pick us up. luckily, after 15mins, the woman found us and said that there is one taxi will come after 20min. So appreciate that woman. So, if u dont have car, please be careful.
Ngoc L — Google review
Spiritual, Sacred, Timeless, Serene, Peaceful, Respectful, Zen, Historic, Genuine Japan Heritage.. These are some of the words I would use to describe this special place. This is a serene and spiritually grounding mountain temple — peaceful, deeply respectful, and beautifully preserved. Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin offers a timeless atmosphere and a rare window into genuine Japan. I was honored to take part in a guided prayer experience with chanting and drumming — a deeply immersive and reverent moment. The sacred stillness of the forest surroundings only adds to the zen quality of this space. A true sanctuary for reflection, intention, and quiet renewal.”
Kynlee J — Google review
Went during the summer, it was supposedly quieter and more peaceful, compared to spring or autumn. Nice temple to drop by for simple prayers and appreciation.
Cheeky M — Google review
This is a very beautiful temple with such a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The view from the area is stunning, and the surroundings make it a great place to just slow down and take everything in. There are a lot of Buddhas here, which makes the place feel even more special and meaningful. It’s truly a beautiful spot to visit and enjoy some quiet time.
Josh — Google review
This temple is truly a place worth visiting. Even if the autumn leaves haven’t turned red yet, the scenery of the mountain temple is still breathtaking and peaceful. In autumn, it’s definitely one of the must-see spots. I highly recommend paying the entrance fee to go inside — the “五百羅漢” statues are incredibly impressive, each with different expressions and lifelike details. 千手觀音 is equally magnificent, and the sound of sutra chanting inside the hall creates a deeply spiritual and calming atmosphere. It’s a moving and memorable experience — both culturally and spiritually enriching. Absolutely worth visiting, no matter the season. 🙏✨
Roobee — Google review
We have visited many temples in Japan during our many visits and the time we lived in the country. Most of the famous ones are difficult to enjoy due to the many tourists visiting them. It is hard to enjoy the spiritual experience of a buddhist temple if it is packed with people. But this temple is different because of its location, which is hard to reach if you don’t have a car. In addition, the temple is located in a forest with some elevation differences within the temple compound making it breathtakingly beautiful and also very quiet. The staff and the monks are very friendly and accommodating. We even had a chance to enjoy a private prayer session for our small family. The main shrine (photography not allowed) is carved in wood and features incredible detail. The tour inside the main temple is stunning in every regard. In the back of the temple there are 500 small buddha statues. At the ticket office you can buy small bracelets, rings and other things to support the temple. If you have a car and are in the Fukuoka region, this is a very nice visit to include in your planning.
Bull D — Google review
This is an excellent place to admire the fall leaves. Entry to the temple was 400 yen, to simply admire the gardens was 100 yen. It was well worth it to admire the inside of the temple and see the beautiful art. Parking can be a bit hectic, so it’s advisable to carpool or take public transport if possible.
E G — Google review
There is plenty of parking available in a parking lot right across the street from the temple entrance for free. There are bathrooms available right at the entrance to the temple site. You have to pay a fee to enter the temple. After paying the fee you can take your shoes off and explore the inside and outside of the temple including a beautiful zen garden and the maple tree and then follow the route to the sacred hall in which you can participate in a guided prayer with Japanese chants and drumming. There are no translations in any other languages but it was still a unique experience. After the prayer you can make your way to the 500 statues. They are all well taken care of just like the rest of the temple site! We received our goshuin stamp at the little office right after the prayer.

Ichiran no Mori is about an hour away from Fukuoka. The noodles were excellent and the broth was rich and delicious. Although I'm not a big ramen person, the experience was still really nice. We were lucky to not have a long wait, which made the visit even better.

We love Ichiran ramen so we were delighted to visit the place and see how they make their noodles. As always, the ramen was superb.

Tumandegoran Cakery is a charming spot that celebrates its anniversary every November with a special sale offering 30% off on selected products. The store offers an array of delectable treats made with high-quality ingredients, particularly eggs. Visitors rave about the Itoshima roll, a low cake wrapped in thick egg sponge cake, and the delightful salted jiuqu caramel roll. Customers also appreciate the fluffy texture of the rolls and the rich cream filling.
Delicious fluffy roll with tender dough and amazing cream. I could not get enough of it. Very nice place, it is a bit pricey, but you can taste the difference in the first bit, they use high quality ingredients, especially eggs, fantastic.

It was just after 10 o'clock, but the store opened at 10:30, so I lined up (there were two customers ahead of me). By the time the store opened, there were about 10 people inside. ・Roll cake (plain) 432 yen ・Pudding 388 yen ・Hot coffee 465 yen I was lucky that all roll cakes were 20% off that day! There were a few flavors that caught my eye, such as caramel, but since it was my first time, I started with plain. The pudding also looked delicious, so I ordered it. There were tables and chairs in the building next door, so I tried it there. Many people took several pieces to go, which shows how popular it is. I tried it without any preconceived notions that they use good eggs, and both the roll cake and the pudding were delicious. They were not too sweet and made the most of the quality of the ingredients. I wanted to try the egg dishes at the restaurant across the street, but that will have to wait until next time. Oyster House Maruhachi

Seafood restaurant
Restaurant
Oyster House Maruhachi is a spacious restaurant in Fukuoka, Kyushu that offers oysters and grilled seafood specialties. It's recommended to wear dark clothes and sunglasses due to the flying ash from the grill. The end of the oyster season offers reasonable prices for self-grilling seafood with an English menu available. Despite being crowded and hot inside, it's a great place to enjoy fresh delicious seafood with friends and family. Additionally, it's located near the peaceful seaside.
I was recommended this place from a local when I visited Fukuoka for 1 week , I went to many seafood markets in Japan and this one didn’t disappoint, affordable prices , top quality seafood, you can see the fresh oysters cought by fishermen in the little port outside the market. The bus from the market to Chikuzenmaebara train station is rare , so you might consider get a taxi which will charge 3000¥ , it’s good to find other people near the station and split the price , if there are 2 couples the price will be 1500¥ per couple , if you have the whole day take the bus with only 200¥ . Enjoy 🥳

Wonderful place for charcoal-grilled oysters! Be sure to wear the jackets provided at the entrance—they’re definitely needed. One of the oysters ‘exploded,’ and hot seawater splashed on me. So, avoid wearing fancy clothes and be cautious while grilling. The oysters are incredibly fresh and delicious. The staff are friendly, helpful, and honest. In fact, when we were accidentally overcharged for a dish, one of the staff members ran outside to return the extra payment. Great service 👏 👍

2nd time here as their oysters season tends to end later than other areas in Itoshima. Fukuoka-now website has dates for the season start & end dates, so check before you go. Apart from grilling the fresh seafood, we ordered their specialities: sashimi rice bowls (negitoro-don, hamachi don, salmon don) and the oyster rice. There is no English menu so just look at the pictures and order! The experience of "exploding" oysters was well worth the drive out to the fishing port! Plus you get a kick out of eating seafood that is so fresh and cheap!!

A must when in Fukuoka or Kyushu. Great experience, so delicious and fresh seashells. Just try not to wear light-colored clothes as the ash from grill flies everywhere, probably best is to wear something black and not sensitive. Also it is recommended to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from spark

At Aguri, you simply scan the QR code card on the table with your phone, and your order is completed immediately, as if your table number had been pre-programmed. I was surprised. I ordered spaghetti with sausage, a salad, and an iced coffee... The spaghetti had a bit too much Tabasco sauce...it was so strong, it still stings my throat. As expected, they didn't have the now-popular "serving robot," but...it was nice to see that a human touch still remained. Since I was there, I ordered a seafood bowl with the seafood as is. I was given a numbered ticket at the register, and just as I sat down, my number was called and I went to the pick-up counter to collect my order. At first, I just poured a little soy sauce over it and had it as is. Yes, it was delicious. The skin of the red sea bream was crunchy, and the flesh was moist and soft. The octopus also had a good texture and aroma. The sweet Kyushu soy sauce went really well with it. I started eating it halfway through, adding some wasabi dissolved in the soy sauce. The fish soup had a lot of meat, and the rich miso flavor was perfect for finishing off the seafood bowl. Probably one of the decent places around here for a very generous kaisen bowl at a very decent price, with just …. Decent quality. Besides sashimi and sushi, you’ll find tempura and some beef on the menu. Service is unenthusiastic and you’ll order off an tablet and left to your own devices for the rest of the meal. Bowls of rice are heaped with fish and ikura as you’ll see in the photos. Frequented by locals for their great prices and chunky cuts of chutoro/otoro. But like I said, manage your expectations on quality. Make sure you come prepared with around ¥4000 a head because they only accept cash.

A traditional japanese style restaurant - you have to take your shoes off at the entrance. After being guided to your table, you will order via a tablet (i think there was only japanese). We went in the morning for breakfast, and they only really had raw seafood rice bowls and an ochazuke option with raw fish. As I dont eat raw fish, I got the ochazuke and cooked the raw think slices of fish in the tea (place the fish on the rice and pour the hot tea on top). Taste wise - it was good. Nothing spectacular, but it was definitely still nice and comforting. The raw seafood rice bowls were quite large portions (you could select your rice size) and good quality for the price.

We visited this restaurant spontaneously and were pleased with the service. The staff was friendly and polite. We tried many different dishes as we were a larger group and while some dishes were very good, others were average and below. For instance, the sashimi rice bowl was very good, as was the tempura. Also the clams in sake and butter were tasty. The sushi was average and the abalone was not good. It was hard as a rock and didn’t taste much. Abalone should be a little chewy or “al dente”, but not so hard that you have to worry about your teeth. The dining experience was fine and we enjoyed it but we will try another restaurant next time.

Decided to pop by this chicken eatery after seeing the long queue of locals before it's opening hours. While the meat portion was on the smaller side for my family, the quality was good - fresh and springy. Recommended to order their chicken and fried rice set meal as that was what ultimately filled us up! We left after 12pm and there was another queue of locals waiting to grab lunch, so do drop by earlier if possible 👍🏻

(Translated by Google) The color of the chicken is so beautiful!! The sauce is so good you'll want to dip it in again and again, and it's also great served with rice! The chicken soup in the set meal is packed with tender, fall-off chicken, and it's delicious!! I regret not adding rice to the soup...🫢 I ate inside and also got takeout. Even on a weekday, the restaurant was full by 6 PM, and there was a line.

Duangjan

$$$$expensive
Thai restaurant
Duangjan is a fantastic Thai restaurant known for its rich and creamy green curry with coconut. While the prices are slightly higher than similar establishments, the stunning views and attentive service make it worth the visit. The menu offers a variety of delicious dishes, including recommended cocktails. The staff is friendly and accommodating, even waiting for a late order. Guests can enjoy both amazing food and beautiful scenery at this restaurant, making it a wonderful place to have lunch or dinner.
Though a bit far from the station, the experience was super. Every menu including cocktail is recommended. The staff were gentle and kind enough to wait the last order for my friend to drive back from sending another friend to her hotel.

Authentic Thai taste with a Thai chef. Can be a little spicy for local tastes. Perfect for Singaporeans. The Thai craft beer is tasty too.

You can get both amazing food and stunning view. The fried rice was amazing. But, some rice noodles should be added to the tomyum to give it more volume.

Wonderful Thai food. We had fresh spring rolls, lemon shrimp and fried rice but the highlight was the papaya salad. I could eat 2 platefuls of it. t was quite far from our hotel but it was well worth the drive. The server was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a change of pace.

Great Thai restaurant with a very coconut creamy green curry. The view was good and the service prompt. The only reason I don't give this restaurant 5 stars is it was more expensive than other places of similar quality and the portions were a little small.

I loved both the food and the ambience! It was really a wonderful experience to have lunch over there.
Tanjina N — Google review
In contrast to what other people say this is NOT authentic Thai food. I’ve personally been to Thailand six times and all over the country and I can assure anyone this is not it. Furthermore this is basically a shag next to a noisy road and train track that just happens to have a view of the ocean. But with no fans or air-con on it’s stinking hot inside and on the balcony. Given that they charge city (premium) prices for their food in it’s setting this is incredibly low value!! There are much much better Thai restaurants in Fukuoka city and I would not recommend anyone this place as it’s absolutely not worth the trip! Do yourself a favour; buy some spring rolls and drinks from your local supermarket and just go sit on any random beach somewhere. That’ll give you about the same experience for a tenth of the price.

Tempura Ebisu Shokudo Hatae

Tempura restaurant
Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Tempura Ebisu Shokudo Hatae is a top-notch establishment in town known for its delectable tempura. It provides customers with set meals starting at 490JPY, which include a variety of tempura pieces such as fish, chicken, pumpkin, capsicum, and eggplant. Each meal also comes with a serving of rice, miso soup, radish sauce, unlimited squid and cabbage-pickle.
The ambient is great. This store gives a different experience of eating tempura because they will give you fresh tempuras and they will cook it in front of you. They will not give the tempura all at once but rather one by one, depending on what kind of tempura fried by the staff. I tried ebisu tendon with small portion of rice and it is perfectly satisfying. You will also get pickled squid, miso soup and dipping sauce along with your tendon.
Fadilla P — Google review
Cheap prices. Good food. Pleasant staff. Visit it quite often! Definitely recommend. They have a system of purchasing tickets at the entrance, which can be confusing for non Japanese speakers. But you can also just order at the table, and they should be able to help you out. They've started accommodating for take-out since the pandemic started. I was doubtful whether this would maintain the tempura's crispiness. Thankfully, the tempura was still very crispy and delicious! Glad to know the pandemic won't stop me from enjoying my favourite tempura place!
Raad A — Google review
To me, it is one of the best places in the town to taste Tempura. It offers set meal that starts from 490JPY. A typical set meal includes: 1. 5-7 pieces of Tempura (Fish, Chicken, Pumpkin, Capsicum, Eggplant and so on), 2. One bowl of Rice 3. One bowl of Miso Soup 4. One Radish Sauce 5. Unlimited Squid 6. Unlimited Cabbage-pickle 7. Ocha, Macha & Water If you are not a voracious individual, it will fill you up, for sure. They serve the tempura freshly fried and have some basic drink options. This is a great place for people who wants to hang out and have loud chats! Nobody minds here.

Buffet restaurant
Taiyō no Sara is a buffet restaurant that features expansive windows and wooden decor. It offers international cuisine, making it a distinctive choice for family, friends, and colleagues to get together. The dining room is pleasant with great food and exceptional value. However, the portions may be small for those who have larger appetites. A beautiful dessert plate is provided for the guest of honor during birthday celebrations.
Very nice buffet restaurant with a great choice of salads and desserts. The menu is changed quite often and the ingredients fresh

Great food, nice dining room, exceptional value, although portions are small for oversized foreigners like myself. Beautiful birthday dessert plate for the guest of honour. One very cheerful server who was very friendly, only negatives were the main course arriving before we had finished our soup ( this does happen occasionally in restaurants in Japan ) , and a very surly and brusque young waiter who didn't get the brief that it was a celebration lunch.. saying all that we shall return as overall a good lunch...

(Translated by Google) I visited for lunch in late January 2025. This is a buffet style restaurant located on the first floor of Glocal Hotel. It's a bit pricey, but it's not too noisy and you can enjoy delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere, so I've been using it occasionally for a while now. We recommend the Itoshima vegetable salad, and you can choose from several dressings. It's a 90-minute buffet, but you can enjoy dessert and coffee after your meal, so it's one of our recommended restaurants! We recommend making reservations as it can be crowded not only on holidays but also on weekdays. Fukuoka Airport

Airport
International airport
Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is conveniently located near the city center and offers easy access via underground, bus, or car. It features both domestic and international terminals, with direct rail service to Fukuoka. Despite being one of Japan's smaller airports, it is the fourth busiest in the country, serving passengers from domestic destinations and other parts of Asia. The airport boasts observation decks, free WiFi, nursing rooms, and a clean environment.
The redesign is superb, especially the international departures area. I saw how it changed over time. During my visit in May 2025, a central food station (Hakata Food Station) was already in place, and duty-free stores were placed. Because there are plenty, you will never run out of seats, charging stations, or toilets.
Harby N — Google review
Visited in July 2025 (International Terminal only) One of the reasons why this airport is great (for its users) is that it's located right in the downtown, with a subway line connecting both places. One even can walk from the shinkansen station to the international terminal in 30 minutes or slightly more if he/she is especially in a mood of a walk or a bit energetic. The international terminal itself is well designed, easy to use, and stylish for a medium-sized airport. I saw some reviews posted some months ago complaining the lackluster quantity of seating in the airside - can confirm this problem is largely rectified.

Fukuoka Airport is a great airport. Clean, well-maintained, and very organized. Facilities are modern, signage is clear, and the overall layout makes it easy to navigate. Staff are friendly and efficient, making the travel experience smooth from check-in to boarding. A pleasant gateway to Kyushu!
Josh — Google review
Having passed through the newly renovated Fukuoka Airport in 2024, I was thoroughly impressed. While it retains its compact and manageable size, the updates have given it a wonderfully fresh and refreshing feel, making it a very pleasant place to arrive or depart from. The greatest advantage remains its incredible convenience. Its location is unbeatable, being one of the closest airports to a major city center in the world. The addition of free shuttle rides from the international terminal to the subway station is a fantastic touch, making the commute into the heart of Fukuoka an absolute breeze. It’s a model of efficiency and user-friendly design.
Sorlo S — Google review
Such a pleasant little airport—compact, efficient, and actually quite pretty compared to many other international airports in Asia. Immigration was smooth and quick, plenty of seating areas, and a few lounges to relax in. Pro tip: take the metro to the last stop, Fukuoka Airport, then follow the exit for the free shuttle to the international terminal. It’s super quick, a short walk, and way easier than expected!
Genta — Google review
Be aware that the international and domestic terminals are in separate locations — you’ll need to take a shuttle bus for about 5–10 minutes. The airport itself is efficient, clean, and easy to navigate. Plenty of shops inside, with just the right balance — not overwhelming, but enough variety to find what you need. Security lines move quickly, making it one of Japan’s better airports for smooth travel.
The A — Google review
Fukuoka Airport leaves a mixed impression. On the positive side, the international terminal is clean, modern, and well maintained, with clear signage, spotless restrooms, free baggage carts, and a wide range of restaurants and souvenir shops. 👌 On the negative side, the connection (about 25 minutes) between the international terminal and the metro station located at the domestic terminal is a hassle. Passengers are forced to take a free shuttle bus, often standing with their luggage, just to cross the airfield. 🥴
Big D — Google review
Nothing beats a direct flight to FUK. Fukuoka Airport is probably Japan's best airport in terms of proximity to the city centre. It is so convenient! Some tips for the airport: When you enter the arrival lobby and see the information centre and Tully's, the JR pass exchange counter is to your left. Next to it is a seasonal fruit store where you can score some great tasting produce. The SIM card/WiFi counters are on the right towards Lawson. Straight ahead is the bus berth taking you to Hakata, Dazaifu, Yufuin (if you want to hit the ground running!) The newly opened Food Hall you heard about is located in the transit area of departure terminal. The subway is exactly located at the domestic terminal, so if that's your mode of transport, take a shuttle over where you can also purchase their regional IC card (nimoca). You can also purchase Sugoca from the bus ticketing counter facing the road. We took the airport bus to Hakata, a 15-20 minutes ride to Hakata station, a main transport hub of Kyushu. The bus isn't very well-equiped in terms of luggage space, like a pre-converted bus that hasn't decided to leave it's day job.

Kitakyushu Airport

International airport
Located on an artificial island, Kitakyushu Airport is unique for its 24-hour operation. While it offers scheduled flights to and from Tokyo Haneda Airport, Fukuoka Airport is just a short train ride away with connections to more domestic and international destinations. Kitakyushu itself, established in 1963, sits on the north coast of Kyushu and is known for its industrial significance within Fukuoka Prefecture as well as various sightseeing spots.
Small but clean Better gateway to Kushu than busy Fukuoka. Took 5 minutes for process. But if you are a shopper, it’s not a place for you.

Hands down my favorite airport. Well maintained and clean. Easy immigration and security process. The view from the viewing platform is amazing. You can get there by a shuttle bus from kitakyushu train station. It takes about an hour to get there and costs around 1k yen. 10/10 airport
Marcin F — Google review
I feel like this is the most underrated airport. There are a few direct flights from Haneda Airport which I appreciated. This airport is very clean and have small but good souvenirs stores. and more importantly, I cannot say enough about how amazing the JAL staff are! Due to my health condition, I have to request wheelchair support and they have been the most thoughtful and kind staff I have ever come across with. They have coordinated with the bus company to make sure I can get on the bus seamlessly. I even received a thoughtful card from a staff. I’m truly grateful for the extra mile they take to make you feel special.
Yuki K — Google review
On Friday, October 25, 2024, at approximately 9:30 AM, I was scheduled to board flight LJ350 from Kitakyushu, Japan, to Seoul Incheon. Around 8:00 AM, I entered the airport security checkpoint, prepared with my mobile QR code as I had completed web check-in and did not require a printed boarding pass. Upon request, I turned on my phone to show the QR code. Shockingly, without a word or any explanation, the security staff member abruptly seized my phone from my hand and placed it in the security tray. Up until that moment, I had not spoken to the staff or even made eye contact, as I was simply conversing with my companion. My phone screen was still on, raising privacy concerns, and I instinctively reached out to turn it off. The security agent's expression immediately hardened, and he attempted to snatch the phone from me with increased force. When I resisted, he used even more strength to wrest it from my hand and put it back in the tray. His colleagues, all of whom witnessed this exchange, did nothing to intervene; one even offered an apologetic smile, yet none stepped in to stop this employee’s forceful and inappropriate behavior. This individual appeared to be a male in his 40s. What authority permits you to manhandle personal belongings without consent? What right do you have to treat a traveler’s possessions with aggression and such an intimidating attitude? Frankly, the behavior was reminiscent of a Yakuza rather than an airport security officer. After 15 years of traveling to over 30 countries on more than 300 business and personal trips, this is, without a doubt, one of the most egregious incidents I have encountered. I consider this a serious act of racial discrimination, and I will not return to Kitakyushu. I attempted to send you an email regarding this matter but couldn’t find a contact address. Have you removed your email because you receive complaints like this every day? I fully consent to the public release of the footage. If there is any suspicion that I am exaggerating or misrepresenting events, feel free to review and publish the footage immediately. The small, artificial island of Kitakyushu Airport seemed like it would be a beautiful and serene place. My first impression was exactly that. But this positive sentiment was ruined by one employee’s foolish, racially discriminatory conduct, which left a negative mark on the overall impression of your country. Was the friendliness I experienced in places like Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, or even nearby Fukuoka simply a facade to welcome tourists? Do your other staff harbor the same prejudices as this individual? It is disappointing to witness such an unprofessional display from your staff and disheartening to realize that the training standards at your airport are this low.
Rex K — Google review
Small but a very nice airport. Many bus routes to and from the airport, not so distant from city areas. If your destination in Kyushu are located in east side of the island, this is a good place to land.

This airport is by far great in my opinion. Even though it might not be the biggest, there is a observation deck for you to see. Not too far from Kitakyushu, easy access. I would give this airport a 5 star. There are direct flights to places in Japan such as Haneda, so do not worry.

Kumamoto Airport

International airport
Regional airport
Aso Kumamoto Airport is a convenient gateway to the Kyushu region, offering easy access to cities like Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima. Upon arrival in the city center, travelers can hop on the Kumamoto City Tram for a picturesque journey through the heart of the action. This affordable mode of transportation provides a charming way to explore the city while avoiding urban traffic.
Newly renovated compact but modern airport with handful of dining options pre-security as well as more extensive options inside. Don't bother using the lounge as there is no view and feels boxed in - the gate area is good enough for chilling.
Sho Y — Google review
Early July 2025. Small airport. Airport bus took about 40 minutes to reach here. As the counters have opening hours and the international checkin is a small area, I didn’t know where the checkin counters were. I went up to the second floor where the actual departure custom is located. Then I went back to first floor realizing the closed area is actually the checkin counter. I can extrapolate that if the airport is crowded, it might be pretty long queue for airlines without dedicated counters. The international departure has only one duty free shop and one tea room for tea. If you want to shop or eat at restaurants, after the custom, you move to the left into the domestic departure area. Then you have to go through the scanning again when you come back to international departure area. So those pictures you saw about restaurants and shopping belong to the domestic departure area. If you do not have luggage, you may want to explore. I have hand carried stuffs and didn’t want the hassle of baggage check again. So what you see in my photos here are the whole area of international area. That’s all. Two minutes walk one round. If you want shopping, go and pop into local departure area.

A cheerful and convenient airport full of Kumamon charm and One Piece fun! Kumamoto Airport is a wonderful regional airport that perfectly captures the spirit of Kumamoto. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by Kumamon, the beloved bear mascot of the prefecture, along with One Piece-themed decorations throughout the terminal. The playful designs and cheerful atmosphere make travelers — both kids and adults — feel happy and excited from the moment they step inside. The airport is modern, clean, and easy to navigate. The first floor has several restaurants and souvenir shops, offering local specialties such as Kumamoto ramen and sweets, perfect for a quick meal before your flight or a last-minute gift. Domestic flight facilities are efficient, and check-in and security are generally smooth and well-organized. While it’s a smaller airport, it’s very well-equipped — there are convenient seating areas, charging points, and clear signage in English and Japanese. Transportation to and from the city is also straightforward, with bus connections to central Kumamoto. Overall, Kumamoto Airport combines functionality and local charm beautifully — a happy and welcoming gateway to Kyushu that leaves you smiling whether you’re arriving or departing.

Kumamoto Airport may not be as large as major hubs like Narita, but it offers an excellent travel experience. The airport is very clean and well-maintained, creating a pleasant atmosphere for travelers. One thing that stood out to me was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. When we arrived, our luggage was already lined up and neatly arranged a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the efficiency and respect embedded in Japanese culture. Everything felt organized and stress-free, making it a smooth start to our trip. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to Kumamoto!

Nagasaki Airport is located on an island and offers direct ferry service as well as an observation deck with grassy areas. Travelers can reach the Kitamatsuura Peninsula from Tokyo by taking a flight from Haneda Airport to Nagasaki Airport, followed by an airport bus to Sasebo, and then following directions in the Sasebo section.
A small airport, immigration was pretty fast and smooth. The airport is located pretty far from Nagasaki city, had to take a 30mins bus into the city. Ticket can be bought from the machines at the bus stop, one of the buses supports IC card if u have one. There is a small stairs to the observatory near the exit where the buses are. I took the airport limousine bus (1200¥) within minutes of my plane's arrival from Tokyo. I bought the ticket from the vending machine and joined the Q at platform no. 5. I managed to secure a window seat. Those passengers who boarded later had to sit on seemingly uncomfortable seats in the middle row or in the aisle. I gave the ticket to the driver when I alighted at my stop-Chuobashi. If I'd dutifully topped up my IC card, I'd use the card instead.

The Airport built in 1975 and supported a Concord has become small decades later. If taking an expensive taxi is not an option when traveling downtown ie the Shinchimachi, the only convenient traveling to and from the Airport is to use its 20-minute interval limousine bus costing just Yen 900 each way (around 80 minutes). I bought a ticket upon departure on Nov 23, 2018 and when I returned on November 27, I paid cash when alighting!
