Indian Coffee House

Coffee shop
Indian Coffee House in Allahabad, also known as Prayagraj, is a popular spot for quick bites and coffee. The unassuming location offers basic seating and a buzzing atmosphere filled with endless discussions on various topics like politics, literature, and local events. It's beloved for its delicious coffee and simple yet satisfying South Indian dishes along with breakfast options like egg dishes.
The classic India coffee house established in 1957. This place has an old school vibe, with intellectuals often visiting and sipping on their coffee. The prices are reasonable for the quality offered. Cutlet, vada, sandwich, hot cream coffee and hot coffee were all that i tried and they were all pretty good.
Aniket — Google review
The building with an impressive facade of the Raj era lies in an area full of malls and shopping centres looking like a relic from the past. The crowd are mostly from the Allahabad university,High court and vibrant political, literary and artistry types. The interiors and waiters in white uniforms also take you to Raj Era. The food is very average but the feel of the place is awesome. The service is also great. Visit is always recommended…
AMIT J — Google review
The food here is upto the marks, although they need to work upon coconut chutney in particular,as it was similar in taste and texture with some street side stall, also the sauce they serve is of cheap quality. Rest the service, vibes of place is top notch,as like old raj days, you can witness some serious discussions from pov retired government servants. Also good thing is that there is separate dine in place equipped with AC for families.
Manish K — Google review
Classic old timer charm of the Indian Coffee House experience. Air conditioned section for ‘families’ is a bonus, although they should also allow gentlemen patrons who are willing to spend the extra GST to access the AC section.
Sahaj B — Google review
A very old chain of coffee houses run by the employees cooperative society. It has branches all over India. I have visited their branches in Chandigarh, Gwalior, Kocchi and Shimla. Lot of memories with this place . When I passed my 10th in 1975 , visited here with some friend and paid Rs1.07 for one Masala Dosa. For same Dosa, This time I paid Rs 160 on 22/8/25. Place not well maintained but neat and clean and people like me will always visit this place .
Adarsh K — Google review
I visited Indian Coffee House in Prayagraj due to it’s brand name but unfortunately, i am disappointed. - The masala dosa i ordered didn’t taste authentic, not even close to other original Indian coffee house restaurants. - Cleaning wise also okay okay, furniture is old. - Compared to ICH in Madhya Pradesh, I will not recommend anyone to go ICH prayagraj.
Sanket A — Google review
I visited during my SSB Interview. Here is my review: - It's an old building which gives retro vibes. - When it comes to south indian food, ICH is my priority. - I order mix veg uttapam, it was really tasty. - Service was welcoming and cooperative. - Wait time was approx 15-20 minutes. - Proper sitting arrangement with comfortable chairs and table. Overall, I recommend this place if you want to eat south indian food.
Mayank S — Google review
Stepping into the Indian Coffee House in Prayagraj is like taking a gentle step back in time. Its aged construction and traditional seating arrangements whisper tales of a bygone era, imbuing the space with a palpable sense of heritage. It's clear that this establishment holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, particularly as a favored spot for morning gatherings and afternoon repasts. The air is often filled with the murmur of conversations and the enticing aroma of breakfast and snack offerings. Their menu boasts a comforting array of options, from diverse egg dishes prepared in various styles to satisfying sandwiches and the ever-popular South Indian dosas. On my recent visit, I decided to try their masala dosa. While it wasn't the most exceptional I've ever had, it certainly provided a decent and familiar taste. The overall experience, however, was more about soaking in the ambiance and the enduring charm of this well-regarded Prayagraj institution.

The Tamarind Tree

Mentioned on
2 lists
South Indian restaurant
The Tamarind Tree in Allahabad offers a delightful dining experience with its sumptuous South Indian cuisine. The restaurant provides an authentic atmosphere where guests can dine on the floor at low-lying tables. Upon arrival, patrons are greeted with a traditional Welcome Drink and presented with an extensive array of South Indian dishes, featuring an impressive dosa menu including the popular cheese dosa. Additionally, the restaurant offers a variety of Chinese dishes, including delectable fried rice.
This a fantastic place to relish south Indian food when you are in Prayagraj. The good thing is you also get Chinese food besides sweets and beverages. Of course, this place is expensive. I make it a point to visit Tamarind Tree every time I visit Prayagraj. The food stuff is authentic in taste and served in a completely hygienic atmosphere. What I like most about this place is their unique ambience, though it is too dark. When you come from outside during day time you need to adjust for a minute or two to see everything properly. I love the masala dosa. Normally I order a paper masala dosa here. I feel it is not as big as I find it at several other places. They also give nice Uthapams. I think they could be a little heavier. I miss south Indian Thali here; they should arrange this. Some south Indian vegetables , rasam, raita, chutney and papad alongwith poories would make my day. As an option they could give Meals too with rice, vegetables, sambar and rasam topped with ghee. I tried their Chinese food also. I think one plate of noodles or fried rice was too good but less in quantity. One plate is enough for one person only if you are hungry. Beverages are fine and in summers you will definitely like them. Overall this is a must visit place, at least once, when you are in Prayagraj. SUGGESTION: They should keep south Indian paan for sale at the counter. Besides this, some laddu or Mysore Paak could also be put up for sale. South Indian boondi laddu is unique in taste and cannot be found elsewhere.
APURVA R — Google review
The ambience is good. The variety of Dosas is huge. The taste was more towards authentic South Indian food than is found in most restaurants. My suggestion as a South Indian would be to avoid Mysore Masala Dosa, but my North Indian wife said that the taste is more suitable for people here. Not only was service quick, the food was better than most places.
Pratyush N — Google review
One of the best south Indian restaurant here at Prayagraj Good food specially it's welcome drink It's so refreshing 😁 Variety of dishes in South Indian
SHWET K — Google review
Amazing place for south indian if you like to stay away from crowded places. Food is quite good but please don't visit in a hurry otherwise you will get disappointed.

I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant, but the staff's unprofessionalism completely ruined the experience. I visited this restaurant last night and was appalled by the behavior of the staff. Our server was rude and inattentive, taking ages to take our orders and forgetting one of our appetizers. When I politely asked him to correct the mistake, he rolled his eyes and muttered under his breath. Requesting owner to kindly change your staff or ask them to be polite and cull of manners. Unacceptable behavior!!

Indian sweets shop
Dessert shop
If you're wandering through Allahabad and your palate craves a refreshing treat, look no further than Kamdhenu. This beloved sweet shop is the perfect antidote to the fiery flavors you've encountered on your culinary journey. Indulge in their Dahi Bhalla, a delightful dish featuring soft roundels made from fermented Urad Dal, soaked in curds and water for that melt-in-your-mouth experience.
Although it was a good experience, Consider going in here in the Afternoon as sweets shops and confectioneries mostly make their sweets & snacks in the morning for evening sales!
Utkarsh — Google review
I had ordered rabdi, jalebi and pani puri. I liked rabdi which wasn’t too sweet and just perfect. There jalebis were crispy too.

A place selling sweets, drinks, chaats & such. We went there at around 7:45 PM and billed for lassi to be told that it was already finished!! We had badam milk in lieu, which was okay. The chaat counter and such are outside.

EL Chico Restaurant

Mentioned on

Restaurant
El Chico Restaurant, established in 1964, has evolved from a humble cafe to a diverse dining destination offering various cuisines. Located in Allahabad, India, it is renowned for its Continental, North-Indian, and Chinese dishes. Despite being the oldest fine-dine restaurant in the area, El Chico still preserves its signature flavors that have made it famous over the years.
Old is gold , heard a lot proved by this restaurant. Went to this place few weeks back for the first time. Ground floor has a bakery followed by consecutive three floors offering three beautiful restaurants. First floor is pure veg and ending on to third floor with a continental one. The taste is amazing. Every dish is well made and served very nicely. The service is quick and prompt. Ambience is amazing and provides an excellent view of the city. Overall an amazing experience 👍👍
Supreet V — Google review
Since 1964, this place has been keeping its legacy alive✨🌈 Such a warm and cozy vibe! The soft yellow lighting made everything glow, and the food was just as amazing as the ambience. A perfect spot for a beautiful evening❤️
Shikha S — Google review
Visited El Chico Restaurant on the 3rd floor — the ambience was good, but the quality of non-veg food was very poor. We ordered dhaba mutton, but even that had no proper pieces (gala bhi nahi tha). We had to wait for almost an hour to get our order, even though there was no rush during lunch time. Overall, not a good experience.
Bharat J — Google review
El Chico is a popular spot in Allahabad known for its wide variety of dishes, all served with top-notch quality. The Chicken Dum Biryani is flavorful and satisfying, while the Cona Coffee is rich and perfectly brewed. Whether you're in for a full meal or a quick snack, El Chico never disappoints.
Saif Q — Google review

Amazing experience. Loved the service and food was delicious. Must try Dum Aloo and Shahi Dum Biryani. Very efficient staff.
Jay M — Google review
See the vibe is good staff is ok ok, but the quantity of food as per price is less they give less food as compared to the prices they charge ,
Shivangi T — Google review
I dont even know where to begin. This place is pretentious as hell, and it likes to cater only to the "seemingly rich" audience. We were a bunch of college kids that wanted to dine in at the rooftop area, first off we are greeted with a weird smug look, then as we go inside none of us suggest a good place for us to sit considering the weather. All of that is fine, when we start to place our order- as we're enquiring about the food dishes and what is sold best here, this cocky waiter gives us these judgy looks and rolls his eyes at us and for once even went to his coworker and shared a laugh about some doubt of ours about THEIR own menu that WE are paying money for. Their entitled attitude does not just end here. Then the food is prepared and just KEPT on our table and I had to voluntarily ask for it to be served, since the seats were more than the number of people there was empty space on the table and excess plates- the same cocky waiter serves food on plates that were close to him, instead of asking who ordered what, he simply served food on whichever plates were near him (regardless if someone was tending to it or not) and walked away. We had to reshuffle everything ourselves just to eat what we ordered. The height was when we asked for the manager for the terrible attitude and the service we got, and complained to him about these issues that we faced- his reply was, "Thanks for letting us know, this feedback will help us grow in the future," like what even???? no attempt to address the issue in front of the staff member who behaved so poorly?? In the end, we were left with a hefty bill, mid food, and a ruined birthday Being one of the most recognized and high end restaurants of Allahabad, its standards are definitely inflated and biased to the seemingly "rich looking" clientele.

Visited today for lunch. Food is nice. Service and ambience is okay. Dal makhani is not what it should be. Kashmir Aludam is nice.
AMIT J — Google review
Great place! The staff is humble but the service can be fast. The food was great with a lot of quality options on their menu. It's definitely on the expensive side but the food is worth it. Hope they maintain their quality. 👍 We ordered 2 starters both were good, then a Red Thai Curry with rice (must try), Butter Panner Masala and Naan. Naan was thin and well cooked. Everyone in my family loved the experience.

The butter chicken was very tasty, and the flatbread was a bit expensive but yummy ,The dim sum was quite expensive and had an okay taste, but the condiment was good. Overall, the atmosphere was very peaceful. However, there were mosquitoes in the garden area, so I preferred the restaurant area You can also take pictures in the garden
Mohammad M — Google review
Went for dinner to this quaint tastefully done up place in Prayagraj, but which has surely seen better days. We reached around 2145. We had a look at the rooftop option and then settled in at the indoor restaurant which is on the first floor. The restaurant is done up tastefully with some quaint lighting and lots of greenery, which we really loved. We ordered for veg dishes including the Eden Paneer butter masala, which was good. Also loved the Dal makhani. The Jalfrezi was a little dry, though okay in taste. We tried different Naans and rotis, which were good. We tried the panna cotta for dessert, which was good. The toilet though clean looked a little rundown. Possibly to do with the hard water you get in Prayagraj. There's hardly any parking as the hotel is situated in a side road. You can however park on the main road side. Go for this place, if you like good food in a cosy setting with quick service.
George M — Google review
A highly recommended for all my aesthetic people. Food was really amazing. Flat bread pizza is a must try. I was shocked that watever we ordered continental and Indian the food is worth every penny. Hats off to the chef. The ambiance is beautiful. I appreciate how much thought they have given to even bring out the best looks in smaller of the places. Washroom ws really really small though but its ok. service was slow. Must visit there rooftop for aesthetic pics. They can work upon music for the place. Overall must visit especially with friends.
Shruti — Google review
One of the best places in Allahabad to grab continental/ Pan-asian cuisines. A wide assortment of dishes, especially for non-vegetarians. Beautiful interiors and good ambience. The best part though happens to be their portion size. It's easily enough for 2 people. Good service.

Business Trip: First Visit and Experience in Prayagraj I am delighted that one of our stores will soon open in this beautiful city, and we will become a part of it. Having visited more than 80% of India, I have gained extensive experience. I have visited numerous restaurants and sampled a wide variety of Indian cuisine. However, my experience at Pind Balluchi stood out. I was truly impressed by the interior ambiance, the soothing music, the active AC in this hot weather, the excellent service, and most importantly, the cleanliness. Nestled under a charming tamarind tree in the Civil Lines area of Prayagraj, Hira Halwai & Sons is a beloved sweet shop that has been delighting locals since 1942. This delightful establishment opens its doors early to cater to eager patrons craving their renowned samosas, which are celebrated as the most authentic in town and tend to vanish quickly.
Excellent plat to eat and sweets are really amazing and fresh. We went on Saturday and it was not crowded so fast and good services. Nice ambiance with clean restaurant.

The shop is very attractive and eye-catching, with a clean and hygienic environment. The staff is friendly and helpful, adding to the overall positive experience. They offer a wide variety of food options, including South Indian dishes, chaat, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, cold beverages, pizza, Maggi, shakes, Indian snacks, desserts, chai, coffee, jalebi, and sides. I tried the kachori sabji, dosa, and golgappa. The dosa and golgappa tasted good, but the kachori sabji was a bit too spicy for my liking. Still, it's worth visiting at least once for the experience.
Priyanka T — Google review
We just bumped into this place at Civil lines. We went in seeing the board, which declared that the place was started in 1942. However, we had learnt that this was the new branch of a trusted sweet meat shop. We were not disappointed, though the crowd was thin possibly due the joint being new. The place was well done up. Nice seating and good ambience. Lots of fried snacks, sweets and the usual Chaat & such. We tried the chaat papdi, Dahi bhalla & lassi. The lassi was served in a earthen glass and was served cold. The chaat papdi and dahi bhalla were also good. The total bill was 180/-. They accept cards, UPI & cash. There's not much parking and you can park on the road side. Didn't use their washroom, so can't comment thereupon.

From fresh produce and spices to clothing and handmade crafts, markets provide a central point for buying and selling, encouraging haggling and friendly exchanges between vendors and shoppers. They serve as vital hubs for both commerce and social connection, embodying the local culture and providing a lively, engaging experience for everyone who visits. Markets offer a wide variety of goods, from everyday essentials like groceries and household items to unique treasures such as local handicrafts, jewelry, and clothing. The marketplace fosters lively interaction between buyers and sellers, with vendors calling out to attract customers and shoppers engaging in spirited bargaining to get the best prices. A constant hum of conversation, the calls of vendors advertising their wares, and the clinking of coins create a lively soundtrack to the market. Perishables, such as fruit, vegetables, meat, and fish fall into this group since goods must be sold within a few days and the quantity supplied is relatively inelastic. The second group is the short period market where the time in which the quantity supplied can be increased by improving the scale of production (adding labor and other inputs but not by adding capital)

The Lokhnath market has become so congested. Shopkeepers have done so much encroachment and illegal occupation that going there feels like trapping yourself. But people still go out of necessity. I believe that if the municipal corporation removes the illegal occupants and the vehicle parked ( specially 2 wheeler, 3 wheeler loader vehicle on the road, and if some roads are designated as no-vehicle zones while others become one-way streets for better traffic control, then 10 times more people will go to the market, and their business will increase. Lokhnath and Chowk Bazaar, which were once the pride of the city and are now struggling, will come back to life.

A very old market of Prayagraj.Famous Hariram Namkeen shop is here which was started in year 1890. There are shops of spices, pickle, Candies, traditional sweets. In morning one can get fresh vegetable. The market is for vegetarian dishes only . Famous Loknath temple is also there. Few "Lassi" and " thandai" shops are also there. Best way for going there is by using Battery rickshaws.

Hari Ram & Sons is a popular name in Allahabad for serving a variety of Indian snacks. This age old shop in the Chowk area is most famous for their dry masala samosas. This is an only sales outlet.

Prayagraj Airport

Airport
Prayagraj Airport, also known as Allahabad Airport, serves as a convenient gateway to the historical city of Prayagraj. Located in the Bamrauli area, it is approximately 20 km from the main city and offers daily flights to major destinations like Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi. Despite being small in size, the airport boasts modern infrastructure and efficient services.
Prayagraj Airport has seen significant improvements, especially recently. Key takeaways Modernized facilities, including expanded terminals and increased capacity.Generally positive feedback on staff courtesy and cleanliness. Increased traffic, especially during the Mahakumbh, which the airport has handled well.It is becoming a very important regional airport.

If you have a long wait before your flight, I wouldn’t recommend arriving too early at this airport. It’s a small but well-maintained airport, originally upgraded during the Mahakumbh period. However, there aren’t many options to pass the time, with very few eateries both inside and outside the airport. That said, the small size does have one advantage—less walking! So if you prefer a hassle-free airport experience with minimal distances to cover, this might work in your favor. Just plan your arrival wisely and don’t expect entertainment or dining options!

Prayagraj Airport is clean and comfortable for passengers. The CISF staff are very friendly and helpful, which makes travel easy. The check-in and security process is smooth. The only problem is the road to the airport, which is not very good and should be improved.

Visited Prayagraj for Mahakumbh 2025 and used Prayagraj Airport for my travel. Despite being a relatively small airport, the terminal efficiently managed the massive influx of passengers during the event. The staff was well-prepared, security checks were smooth, and baggage handling was quick. Cleanliness was well-maintained, and basic amenities were available. Kudos to the authorities for ensuring a hassle-free experience during such a high-footfall period!

Prayagraj Airport, also known as Allahabad Airport, is a domestic airport *Facilities:* - The airport has a single terminal with basic amenities like waiting lounges, restrooms, baggage services, and a small cafeteria. - Parking space is ample, with a capacity for 600 vehicles, up from 200 previously. - Free Wi-Fi is available, along with dedicated workstations and charging ports. - Food options are limited, with only one food shop available after security checks. *Operations:* - The airport operates domestic flights to various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. - It has a single runway, 8,400 feet long, capable of handling narrow-body aircraft. *Expansion and Development:* - The airport has undergone significant upgrades, including a new terminal extension built in 2018 and a larger terminal completed in January 2025. - Passenger traffic has increased substantially, exceeding 1 million passengers in the financial year 2024-25. *Accessibility:* - The airport is located 12 kilometers from the city center, with taxis, auto-rickshaws, and app-based ride-sharing services available. - Public transport options, including buses, are also available. *International Flights:* - Currently, Prayagraj Airport does not receive or depart international flights. *Overall Experience:* - Smooth security and check-in processes. - However, some have criticized the limited food options and lack of amenities like lounges and on-belt bag scanners .

MAHAKUMBH 2025... We landed in Prayagraj with a lot of apprehension.. wanted to see what all the talk was about.. improving the AIRPORT structure to cater to the needs of the endless visitors who are going to land here for the Mahakumbh. The arrival lounge of the airport was colorful with banners and posters.. the lounge was bright, neat and the air was full of EXCITMENT and apprehension . The baggage section was neat and the wait for the luggage was not for long. One could feel the effort taken to upscale the airport to cater for the footfall during this period. The security was tight. The queue at the departure was also conducted smoothly by the security forces. it was slightly congested because of the crowd. but the staff and the security were on their toes for the smooth process of check ins . Not much of a commercial activity inside. An eatery and couple of stalls selling souvenirs. Other times i guess there would have been ample chairs to sit .. but still there were enough chairs placed for the fliers. Its slightly far from the city.. but was a nice drive to the airport reminiscing of the time spent in this holy place .. where once the sages and saints had long since traversed.

Prayagraj Airport is a clean, modern, and less-crowded facility, which makes check-in and security quite smooth. However, the passenger experience is severely let down by the lack of basic essentials. During my visit, the restrooms had no napkins or tissues for drying hands, which is a major hygiene issue. Furthermore, the drinking water station was useless as there were no glasses available, forcing travelers to buy water. The service was indifferent—neither friendly nor rude. In short, it's an "ok-ok" airport that gets the job done, but it desperately needs to improve its attention to fundamental passenger comfort and amenities.
