Asahikawa in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Asahikawa, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Asahikawa is a great base for exploring central Hokkaido, with easy access to Daisetsuzan National Park, the flower fields of Biei and Furano, and nearby ski areas. The city is known for Asahiyama Zoo, one of Japan’s most popular zoos, where unique enclosures let visitors see animals up close in winter conditions. In town, you can try its signature soy-based Asahikawa ramen, visit local sake breweries, and experience deep-snow winters with illuminations and seasonal festivals.
With favorites like 仙台牛たん 福助, Snow Crystal Museum, and The Sun Kuroudo, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Hokkaido Ramen Santouka and Sukiyaki Sankousha Asahikawa so you can get the best taste of Asahikawa while you’re here. Asahiyama Zoo is a modern zoo featuring reptiles, marine mammals, and a famous daily penguin parade. It's part of a comprehensive travel plan that includes other attractions like the hills of Biei, the Blue Pond, and flower fields at Farm Tomita in Furano. The zoo offers an exciting experience with various animal exhibits and the highlight being the entertaining penguin parade. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Biei Patchwork Road and Blue Pond for stunning natural scenery.
A well-designed zoo, easy to reach and worth the visit. The animal enclosures are creatively built to let you observe the animals up close, especially the penguin and seals viewing via underwater glass tunnel. Sections are educational and family-friendly. The zoo is clean, well-maintained, and staff are helpful. Great for both kids and adults looking to experience wildlife in such a unique setting.

Reasonably sized, clean, well laid out zoo. You can spend anywhere from an hour to a few here depending on whether you stop to see everything. They've got a good variety of animals, especially those for cold climate such as polar bears, seals and penguins. There are also kids areas for interacting with small animals. There are feeding sessions to watch as well, though you'll generally want to come in the morning for those as most are finished by early afternoon.
Bent Z — Google review
Love this zoo. It is built on a hill slope. Animals are well kept and clean. Great place for children and adult alike. We entered by the East Gate which is at the top of the hill and stroll slowly downhill. When getting back to the East Gate, there is a bus stop mid point of zoo where you can catch a shuttle bus back to the top if you are tired. Inexpensive entry fees and worth your 3 to 4 hours spent there.. enjoy!

Absolutely great place to visit on our last day drive out to Sapporo. Though it was little hotter on the day of visit and we got sun burn but worth it. Good light also gave us an opportunity to click better pics. I found penguin in the open space were very good for photography and interaction. Loved the big wolf, healthy lions, cheetah, bear, and many more species plus birds. Good place to go though the car parking could be a challenge but not that bad as Furano farm. Here jt is well managed.
Ravish M — Google review
Went on a day that snowed in autumn (end of October!). Loved seeing the penguins, polar bears, and other animals. It would be great to explore it when there is no snow though so I dont have to worry about slipping but I heard it's really popular in winter because of the penguin walk.
Celeste V — Google review
Visited Asahiyama Zoo in mid-July. Even though it was hot and rainy, the zoo provided umbrellas for visitors, which was a really thoughtful touch. The paths are easy to walk, and it’s simple to get from one animal area to another. Lots of animals to see, and everything felt well maintained. A great experience overall—highly recommended!
Janny P — Google review
One of the best zoo experiences the big cats and all the animals seem to love the cooler weather! (Went Nov 3) - lots of great photography opportunities and happy animals.
Amanda V — Google review
I visited this zoo in July 2025. The weather was quite hot, around 30°C. If you arrive in the afternoon, there’s usually no need to wait in line for tickets. The entrance fee for adults is 1,000 yen. The zoo itself isn’t very large, but it houses a wide variety of animals. What impressed me the most was that, in addition to viewing animals from outside their enclosures, there are indoor walkways where you can see some animals up close, separated only by glass. Some animals, like the bears, appeared a bit thin and old, while others like the tigers and lions looked healthy and typical for a zoo. Compared to other zoos, the highlight here is definitely the opportunity to observe the animals more closely than in most places.

Ueno Farm, also known as The Gnomes' Garden, is a charming farm and plant nursery in Nagayama, Asahikawa. Established in 1989, the farm has evolved into a picturesque English-style garden with cobbled paths, ponds, and seasonal flower displays. Visitors can explore over 2,000 types of flowering plants across the 1.3-hectare site from spring to autumn.
very interesting place to visit with a nice little shop with many wares to browse. the flowers are very pretty and there’s a good variety of species and colours. the mountain hike (optional) was unexpected but fun and manageable.
Nadya M — Google review
A little out of the way if you’re taking public transport. Took me about 20minutes to walk from the nearest train station. The Gardens are really well maintained with various flower souvenirs you can get from the gift shop. There is also a hill for you to hike up to. It is rather steep, so wear grippy shoes. I completed the garden in about an hour.
Vern — Google review
1000 yen entrance fee for a really lovely stroll in a large garden. The top of the hill has a swing and it was so cute finding gnomes hidden everywhere! Such a good photo spot. It felt pretty magical.
Sket D — Google review
I visited Ueno Farm’s Gnomes Garden in July and paid a ¥1,000 entrance fee - worth every yen. The gardens are styled like an English cottage garden, but with a uniquely Japanese sense of harmony and care. Winding paths, blooming flowers, and whimsical touches create a storybook atmosphere. The entire grounds are just beautiful - lush, peaceful, and full of character. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe deeply, and feel completely transported. A must-visit for garden lovers and anyone looking for a serene escape in Hokkaido.
Annie S — Google review
Highly recommend to visit this beautiful garden. After painting the entry fee, you find yourself in a stunning well maintained garden. Then the path takes you to a more wild and steep part. Then it goes back to the well maintained area again. There are lots of pretty installations for photo opportunity. My daughter enjoyed looking for gnomes and a prize at the end was a highlight for her.
Helena S — Google review
1000 yen is too expensive for what it is. Only the garden area around the entrance is kinda nice and show some maintenances, but after that it was just weeds. I went there at the end of August, some flowers were dying.
Kate C — Google review
Lovely place that had a whimsical feel rather than the heavily curated/industrial look of typical flower farms. There were flowers everywhere and we had fun exploring the area. The rainbow chairs and swing sets at the top of the hill make for very nice photo ops, and the view from there was amazing. Recommended to wear covered and comfortable shoes for the walk up and down from there. There was a nice cafe with desserts and drinks, and free WiFi. Free parking right outside the park, and paid entry into the park.
Kia N — Google review
A beautiful and peaceful garden, not only filled with stunning flowers but also offering fun for kids with a gnome-hunting activity. In the end, the adults (me) were more enthusiastic than the kids, trying to find as many gnomes as possible 😆. Despite visiting on a Saturday, it felt much less touristy compared to the famous flower fields in Furano, with a calm and relaxing atmosphere that’s different from the usual garden experience. There’s a wide variety of interesting plants and flowers to enjoy. It was quite hot that day, and I got tanned a lot after the visit, but it was totally worth it, just make sure to apply sun protection. The food from the café was delicious as well. Highly recommended.

I ate in one of their stores... It was just not bad.. personally for me, I have tried other stores in the vicinity that also taste better than here. It is a nice visit to see the village and there is surrounding clothes store and grocery shopping around here.
Andrew E — Google review
I really wanted to like what was available, I picked the store with the longest line. The miso ramen was unremarkable, more Garlicky and mildly spicy than having a strong miso flavour. The soup was oily rather than well emulsified. Points for being generous but it was not worth the calories.
Elliot T — Google review
When I first arrived, I was a bit surprised — I had imagined the place to be much bigger. It turned out to be just one building with several ramen shops inside. But honestly, it was really cute! We went into one of the ramen places — it even has a Michelin star! The food was amazing; having a bowl of hot ramen on a cold day was just perfect. After that, we stopped by the restroom, and right nearby there was a cozy café. We grabbed some Hokkaido milk coffee — it wasn’t expensive, and the staff were super friendly. The restroom was clean too, and there was even a small photo spot to take pictures. Around the Ramen Village, there were lots of shops to explore, so we ended up spending quite a bit of time there. I’d say it’s totally worth a visit — good food, nice vibes, and a bit of shopping all in one place. ☕🍥🛍️

got there late around 3pm and most of the ramen shops are closed for the afternoon break. most ppl will head for the first shop facing the carpark but there's actually another few ramen shops behind that's just as good. we went into this one and must say the ramen with extra chasu is fantastic. broth choices are between shoyu or miso... the shoyu broth was really fantastic.
Diana H — Google review
Fun little ramen place but you can also get similar ones in town. A good trip if you went to the sake museum before (or after) as it’s in the same part of town. The ramen wasn’t particularly better or more unique to others you can find close to the station.
Sobren15 — Google review
One tummy one meal. Only managed to try one Ramen shop there. That shop is meant to be highest google review ratings based on restaurants in the village. Abit of research indicated that Asahikawa is famous for their shoyu based broth. Disappointingly, the ramen taste was abit underwhelming. A well known place with a name called Ramen village should have ramen with exceptionally standing out characteristics and quality. I found the ramen pretty standard.
Alfred W — Google review
In Ramen Village, numerous ramen restaurants beckon, but during lunch, most were fully occupied. Fortunately, we secured a table at one of them. The taste was average, not compelling enough to justify a journey solely for ramen.

Specialty Museums
The Otokoyama Sake Brewing Museum, a former brewhouse-turned-museum, is a must-visit for sake lovers. It offers exhibits on traditional sake-making methods and provides the opportunity to taste different varieties of this popular Japanese beverage. Located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, the museum provides an immersive experience into the world of sake production and allows visitors to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship behind this iconic drink.
The museum is free of charge and more of a self-guided type of museum. On the second floor you can see inside the sake making facility, and they show how famous the sake is worldwide. On the third floor you can watch an explanatory video (in many different languages), explaining the sake making process. They also showcase the traditional tools needed to make sake. The real highlight was the sake tasting station though. Each person gets 3 free coins to try their mid range sake. If you want to try their most famous ones, you pay 200¥ per sake you want to try (3 different ones are available). We also tried their sake ice cream and sake kasu chocolate, both incredibly flavourful ! It is recommended to come by bus or by taxi since you shouldn’t drive after the tasting. The bus stop is right across the museum.
Judith K — Google review
A small museum but we do can learn the whole process of making sake. A 200 Yan sake tasting gave nice experiences. No charges for the factory tour also self guided. At the testing room you deposit your coin and push a bottom for sale to dispense! Many old and traditional tools are on display to show how the sake were made during the past which was very neat!

When my wife and I researched places of interest around Furano, we came across Asahikawa, a city located about 56 km (1 hour 5 mins drive by car) north of Furano. Otokoyama Sake Brewing Museum & Park in Asahikawa was a special interest as we enjoy sake. From our hotel in Furano, the drive to Otokoyama Sake was scenic and enjoyable. The museum showcases the history of Otokoyama and chronicling its historical brewing artifacts, brewing processes, collection of regional and international sake awards, etc. An audio-visual TV presentation is available in different languages, including English, and we found this very interesting. From the museum, visitors can view through glass panels into the sake production plant. Entry to the museum is free-of-charge. In a separate building is the sake retail shop where sake tasting and soft-serve ice cream can also be enjoyed. As I was driving, I did not participate in the sake tasting. My wife did and she enjoyed the sake samples. There is a wide selection of sakes for sale at different price points. We purchased Otokoyama's top award-winning Naturally Pure Junmai Daiginjo, Yukimizuki Junmai Daiginjo, and Fukko Sake. We observed an interesting activity by locals who brought large plastic containers to fill up with mineral water which was dispensed free-of-charge from taps. The mineral-rich water is drawn from underground wells for sake production, and the water sources are the very reasons for Otokoyama's location. Of course, we emptied our small drinking bottles and refilled them with the mineral water!
Jeff L — Google review
I really appreciate their free-entry museum. On the top level of museum, I could learn every single stages of sake making. It’s so well curated and easy to understand. It’s foreigner freindly setting which offer presentations in a few different languages. I enjoyed both free and paid sake tastings. Loved everything.
Hannah C — Google review
As we head up NorthEast, we stopped by the sake museum. This sake is almost around the world. It's not a huge place but it does display how they make sake and sell it around the world. There's also an area where you can get free water! There's also a slide for kids! There's a shop where you can purchase some sake and taste them. They have a sticker for drivers so they know who's driving and not let them drink. Nice place to stop by if you're leaving Asahikawa. There's also shopping across the street
Duncan C — Google review
The museum is a must-go for Japanese sake fans. You can explore 2 floors worth of history and events of their most famous sake, as well as watch a short film on the 3rd floor. It's all free admission and photography is permitted. it wasn't busy when we visited on a Sunday afternoon too. The tasting and shop moved to a new location next Dorr but it isn't too far of a walk. Overall, it's worth the 10-15 minutes of exploring!
E T — Google review
350 year old award winning sake brand. They use snow filtered water from Mount Daisetsu. Pretty nice but smallish museum. The store outside has the tastings area. Tried a 7000円 sake for 200円、it was tasty. There is also a cafe. I tried the rice latte 450円 and it was very delicious, tasted like sake😂. Overall a pretty cool experience. Easy to take the bus here from Asahikawa station, use the Japan Travel app for routes, when you get on the bus take a ticket. Note the buses only take coins so have exact change.
David T — Google review
The Museum closes at 5pm and the cafeteria closes at 4:30pm. So plan ahead and enjoy the tour in the 1st floor. Really interesting to know some history. The cafeteria has a lot of options to buy from. I bought the animal can sake, which was a very good to take as a gift. Try the sake tasting as well.

OMO7 Asahikawa by Hoshino Resorts is a modern hotel located near the central train station in Asahikawa. The hotel offers cozy, minimalist rooms and features three restaurants, a relaxed bar, and a spa. Situated just a minute's walk from 5-7 Furarito, a beloved restaurant street with a nostalgic atmosphere from the Showa period, OMO7 Asahikawa provides an ideal base to experience the local charm of the city.
A Stay That Glows with Comfort and Whimsy Our stay at OMO7 was superb. The room was spacious and calming, thoughtfully designed for both comfort and style. Breakfast was a standout, fresh, generous and served in a space that felt like morning wrapped in light and warmth. It was more than a meal, it was a mood. I also loved their onsen, the facility is clean, serene and is the perfect way to unwind. The lobby was dressed in a playful Halloween theme during my visit, adding a touch of festive charm that made the whole experience feel even more welcoming. And the bar? A delightful surprise. With its campsite theme and actual wood burning fire, it felt like a cozy retreat tucked inside the city, warm, aromatic and quietly magical. OMO7 blends hospitality with heart and I left feeling both rested and delighted.

Stayed for 2 nights. Hotel looks dated, it looked much better in photos and in winter. Stayed in twin room. It's tiny, only place to stow luggage is under the bed, and even the it couldn't contain all of it. Bathroom is also very small, barely enough room to move in. Not good for a tall person. No night lights in the room, only option of blinding light across the room, or just blinding light on your bed. Nice view of the outside though. Amenities are convenient though, you get a switch located right next to your pillow, and the Stoke cups in the room are a nice touch. Onsen and bath at the basement level. Male and female baths switch location depending on time of day. Bath area was small, with 1 warm pool and 1 larger cooler pool, steam room and sauna. It gets very crowded after dinnertime. There's also a lounge area where you can hang out after the bath - here they provide Popsicles and drinks for free. Very nice. Breakfast buffet is quite limited. Mostly Japanese style rice and dishes, some pastries and fruit. They had 2 specialty dishes, the seafood bowl with horseradish and smoke salmon waffle. Both were great. Additionally, the resort also provides soft serve and tea in the lobby in the afternoon which was again very awesome. Parking though is extremely limited. The resort does have an arrangement with the surrounding carparks so you get a good discount when you park there, although it's a short walk from there. Location-wise, pretty quiet but there are quite a few food options in the area, the very friendly and helpful staff are happy to point them out. There's also a map in the lobby to refer to and QR codes which provides direction. Conclusion: good family hotel amenities, although rooms are small and structure is dated. Refurbished rooms give a more modern touch.

We stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights in Sep/25. Overall, it's an OK stay. - Smart design with efficient use of space with the raised floor to store suitcases. This would only work for small suitcases or the ones opened in the middle. For suitcases with side opening, it wouldn't work as they would be too thick for the raised floor cavity. - Lack of USB charging ports. There's only one at the desk area which unfortunately didn't work. - There're 3 of us but the hotel only provided 2 room keys which was very inconvenient (we asked for another but were refused due to their policy???) - Breakfast was OK - Room was of reasonable size - Good location, easy parking

THE POLAR BEAR ROOM WAS AMAZING!! So off the bat, everyone was super friendly and helpful at the front desk while checking in. Personally I was in awe at how beautiful the lobby was. Afterwards, the staff helped me bring my luggage to the elevator which was super nice. The room was INCREDIBLE!! And the little cafe was fantastic too! Every time I came down, I had no idea what new thing would be awaiting for me! I loved the board with all the restaurant suggestions too! But the bath, the bath was EXTRAORDINARY! I felt so spoiled every day! I spent 23 days in Japan, did 11 different hotels and this is the one, that was my absolute favorite!

This is the third Hoshino hotel we stayed at in 3 weeks, previously was at Fuji and Hakodate, both were wonderful experience; however, this time was terrible. Service and Staffs are great, kept up with Hoshino standard, but the major issue is the room temperature. The temperature that day wasn't even freezing yet, there is no snow, we have two rooms, both rooms' heater was turn on to the max and just like a sauna, the worst part is it doesn't have cooling feature. The lobby and the hallway temperature were keep nice and cool perfect for people just came in with winter clothing, just don't understand why the room was so hot. Even with an extra fan sent by the front desk, I still haven't difficulty to sleep. The second issue is the Sauna and Bath facility, it is very small compare to the size of the hotel, get extremely crowded, most people prefer the warm tub; however, it can only fit few people before getting uncomfortable; they have a 5-6 times larger size tub but is cold and no one is using it. I had the room with one bed, which has decent space for you to move around and put your luggage, even has a elevated sofa area, if you luggage is not big you can slide under the bed; however, case is a bit different to my family's room, they have a twin beds, space is very limited. There is also no nightstand next to the bed, they installed plug on the headboard, but you got no way to put your phone except leaving it on your bed. There is only ONE microwave on the laundry room on the 4th floor, you need to pray there isn't many people fighting for it; the ice machine and water dispenser are also located there, really inconvenience especially one of the elevator was broken during our stay. We didn't try the breakfast, but can see in the morning it is very crowded, so you want to get up early for seat. The sound isolation in the hotel is pretty poor as well, the hotel has a lot of family travel with kids, and 6-7AM you can hear all the noised from the hallway and the room next door, not ideal if you want to sleep in. Usually I will not hesitate to stay a one of the Hoshino hotel, but I really couldn't recommend this one base on my experience.

Animal themed hotel suitable for anyone with kids. When you check in you’ll get a quiz to count how many animals are there in the room. My son enjoyed spotting all the not so obvious polar bears and really didn’t wanna check out from the room. Breakfast was alright but parking is a little expensive.

What a terrible experience. Booked this hotel on booking.com (which was already paid online). The hotel charged us again and it took more than one hour for them to sort out the matter. My family wasted precious time just waiting for them to sort things out on our holiday. In terms of the room, I’ve booked a triple bed. The 3rd bed didn’t come with linen/blanket and you have to pay an additional 8000 yen and set it up yourself. Moreover, the room is not fully renovated. The toilet and entrance door are recycled from the previous hotel. Even the Aircond is from the old hotel system, not cold and not strong. Even some of the shower levers in the public bath were not working. You would think that by paying this much for a hotel, you would get what you paid for. For my family, my wife was really pissed because the reception made us pay twice and then wasted our time for the refund process, hotel room was not really ‘new/renovated’ and worst of all we paid for a triple bed room only to find the 3rd bed does not come with linen/blanket and we have to pay extra for that. What is the point of the 3rd bed then? Oh yeah, their TV is also not a smart TV, so my son couldn’t watch his particular cartoons. Also, on booking.com, it said breakfast is included for a triple bed room. They only issued vouchers for 2 adults and insist I had to pay for my kid (1 child). I showed the reception staff my booking and said ‘breakfast included for triple bed room - meaning 3 people’ but they still insisted we pay. I think you can understand why my wife was upset and how this spoilt our holiday experience. Please do the right thing and avoid this hotel as they will try to find a way to charge you more. Note: we didn’t end up using the 3rd bed and paid for my son’s breakfast buffet as my wife refused to allow this hotel to scam us into paying more. We lived in cheaper hotels and they were way better than OMO7

We paid for a Superior Triple Room for our little family of 4 (both our kids are under 6yo and can stay with us for free, but I figured a mid-journey splurge so my husband could get a better sleep with his own bed would be nice) but arrived to a room with only 2 beds made up and the 3rd bed bare, with a note saying they’ll charge us a further ¥8000 if we try to use it - puzzling considering we booked a triple room for its 3 beds, otherwise I might as well have booked a double room and saved my money right? We also paid extra for “Breakfast Included” which usually means ‘for all 4 of us’. But no, reception kept asking for more payment so my older child can eat with us. For a child who has not touched much of the other “breakfast included” hotel buffets thus far? No thanks (he ended up sitting through our Omo7 breakfast with none of the food of interest to him anyway). Disappointing they even badger about it, when they’d marketed an included breakfast with the room. The biggest horror was that they mistakenly charged me for someone else’s booking on top of my own (¥42,900 x2 is no small sum) and I wouldn’t even have realised it had they not badgered me about the breakfast charge! They said I hadn’t paid for my booking yet so I believed them. After putting through the payment, they started asking about the child breakfast fee, which made me bring up my booking confirmation to point out “Breakfast Included”, only to realise I’d paid weeks ahead for the room. The look of horror on the receptionist’s face when he realised he’d charged me for someone else’s room was almost as horrified as my own! With their limited English, it took multiple staff to communicate the issue and hours to ‘fix’ the charges - the extra charge is still pending on my credit card at the time of writing. I couldn’t get the names of staff as all nametags bear only Kanji, so I can only identify them by sight not names. Just my bad luck this receptionist went home before this billing issue was even settled. After multiple visits to reception to rectify the billing and dispute the breakfast and bedding (they don’t tell you that reception’s phone extension is ‘2’ by the way!), they eventually agreed to waive the ¥8000 make-your-own-bed-with-linen-hidden-under-the-bed fee, but by then my poor exhausted husband had fallen asleep with the 2 kids so the 3rd bed still stands bare and unused. My experience of their public bath was cut short by all these issues, but lucky me, I still had 50minutes to “relax” before it would close, it being 11.10pm by the time reception conceded the bed fee. The place was deserted since normal people don’t publicly bathe so late. Their shower is hilarious, you have to manually pump it up and down to get water through the shower head before it cuts off every 8 seconds. I lost count of the number of times I was caught off-guard and had to grope blindly for the lever, since my eyes had soap dripping in. Cost-saving exercise masked as environmentally-friendly. Overall a disappointment, we’d only stayed there for a few hours, unless you include the time we wasted at reception. Hopefully they sort out the payment problem as I fear Google-translate-communicating with them any further.

Ramen restaurant
Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is a popular ramen spot in Asahikawa, known for its sophisticated and flavorful bowls of ramen. Unlike other typical ramen shops in the area, Santouka offers a unique shio (salt) ramen alongside the traditional Asahikawa soy-sauce ramen. The noodles are slightly slimmer than usual, providing a nice bite, and the broths are tasty without being overly salty.
The taste is the same as the main shop. I had it in Singapore and it was so good, especially the Toroniku Ramen. Finally ate it at the original source and even better it's that it's half the price in Singapore! Ate it twice in Hokkaido.

Not bad. Didn't give a choice of firmness of ramen, oil and soup seasoning levels, but overall good. Not too salty. Service was good. 11 of us were split into 3 groups which we didn't mind. Orders were taken efficiently and served timely. A hard choice to choose amongst so many ramen shops at the village - but we think we did well...

Asahikawa Ramen Village: Typical ramen shop set up that is available also in Sg, but this serves our favourite ramen in the whole of Hokkaido, thus far. Noodles were slightly slimmer than the usual wavy Hokkaido Ramen, and produced a nice bite. The broths were tasty without being overtly salty. Best part was even my wife commended that their cha siu was nicely done and soft. That to me, is a big award and i absolutely agree! They even sell packed char siew and ramen off the counter.

We have tried Santouka ramen in Costa Mesa, Torrance, San Diego CA as well as in Taiwan. Now we got to visit the city origin: Asahikawa. The quality and taste is consistently good, it's our go-to comfort food. The Toroniku pork and tonkatsu broth are definitely scrumptious. This was our the final stop of our ramen tour at the ramen village, a good way to end the journey in the wonderful Hokkaido area.

Shoyu ramen had a nice thick broth, noodles texture was good. Overall, a delicious meal!

Also named as Asahikawa Ramen Mura. The noodle was soft and chewy while char siu pork seemed to melt in our mouth. Broth was well seasoned. Staff was friendly and price was a reasonable. Packed ramen was available at the counter as well.

Sukiyaki and Shabu Shabu restaurant
Sukiyaki Sankousha Asahikawa is a must-visit spot in Sapporo, offering signature sukiyaki that's worth the trip. The marbled beef is sweet and pairs perfectly with the savory sukiyaki sauce. Visiting during lunchtime not only means shorter wait times but also better value. Despite its popularity, the staff graciously accommodates walk-ins without reservations, unlike many other fully booked restaurants in the area.
Good sukiyaki in a traditional set up. High quality meat and veggies ingredients. Very courteous and attentive staff. Highly recommended to try if you are in this area.
YC W — Google review
The service was great – the staff even folded my clothes for me, which was a nice touch. However, the portion size was incredibly small. There were only three pieces of meat and just a tiny bit of vegetables, definitely not enough to fill me up. I ended up ordering another set meal, but all I did was remove the rice from it. Essentially, I had two sets for one person. Not recommended.

Great place for beef sukiyaki. We came here for lunch and the lunch set menu was great. Very good beef quality and the price is reasonable. Great service with friendly staff.
Pun O — Google review
Amazing sukiyaki restaurant (in business since 1918), especially for lunch when it's somewhat cheaper and less busy than dinner. You can get kuroge wagyu beef set meals for reasonably affordable prices of 1760 yen and up, though we went for the 2640 yen set. Each group of customers has their own private tatami room for a very intimate, traditional atmosphere. Service was memorable and excellent as staff introduced the menu, then went away and came back when you rang the phone to order. After ordering, they then prepared the miso soup base and saved everything in the pot neatly to cook the first batch of meat before exiting. They then returned right about when we had finished eating to serve more hot tea. Details like placing our shoes neatly in the outward direction were notable. The meal itself was delicious and great value. Certainly somewhere we'll come back to visit!
Bent Z — Google review
the food quality was alright, as many reviews have claimed, but the service was poor. we were seated in a tatami room, but the room got so hot we had to ask to turn the air con several times. after a while we found out the air circulation was turned off after we arrived, we had to turn it on ourselves when we found out. it made us felt like we weren’t welcome to the place.
Jack H — Google review
Honestly best tasting Shabu Shabu I have ever had and price is very friendly. We had the most premium meat for 5500 yen per person. Ingredients very fresh. Would definitely visit again!
Annie L — Google review
It was too salty for my liking. Perhaps it’s just not to my tastebuds as this shop has many other good reviews.

We stumbled upon this amazing Japanese restaurant on our way back to the hotel. We were given a private room for 4 people in a traditional Japanese dining setting. Our waiter was amazing and explained the menu as well as answered our questions. It was a mix of English and Japanese but we understood! We ordered the special beef sukiyaki and pork set. Our waiter cooks first and then leaves the rest for us to cook. Really delicious! You get a raw egg each which you dip your food in to eat. I also recommned the oshiruko (red bean with mochi soup dessert) as the dessert. For the quality of the food you get, the price is very reasonable.

Western restaurant
Jiyuken is a cozy and popular family-run restaurant located near Asahikawa Station. Despite its unassuming exterior, the restaurant is often packed with locals and foreign tourists alike. The menu features delicious dishes such as the Goro set, which was featured in Solitary Gourmet. The staff may have limited English skills, but the menu includes English and Mandarin labels for easy ordering.
Gyoza is delicious. The famous pork chop is justified. It's delicious - moist and tender. I am not the fan of this type of sauce but it's a good dish. The star is croquets! Wow, it's very tasty and yummy. Inside the ball is creamy but light. The crispy outside is delightful. We want to come back and try Tonkutsu, but untill next time.
Pla O — Google review
I found this place through Kodoku no Gurume (solitary gourmet). First opened its doors in 1949, Jiyuken spans two levels. They specialise in many classic Japanese-style Western dishes like tonkatsu, and croquettes, the place exudes a charming Shōwa-era retro vibe. One standout is the “Goro Set,” a combination of crab croquette and hokke fry that was featured in the show and is now offered as a regular menu item. The food is simple, and the warm, old-school ambiance makes it feel like a step back in time. A must-visit for fans of the show!
Jun — Google review
The restaurant was recommended by a friend who said it was featured in a drama. The restaurant even has menu items based on the drama. It is hidden away in a small alleyway and if you are not careful, you can miss it. They open at 7pm and there's a waiting queue just to go in. The space is not huge, but they have seating at the 2nd level as well. Food was delicious.
Bhanuka S — Google review
I came here because it had a high rating on Google Maps, though it was a bit tricky to find since it’s not in the main street. The first page of the menu featured tonkatsu とんかつ, so I thought that must be their specialty, and ordered the ロースカツ for 1,700 yen. To be honest, it turned out to be too fatty for my taste. It even made me feel uncomfortable while eating. But since I was seated at the counter, directly across from the boss, I didn’t want to be rude by showing him any displeasure. So I kept a straight face and finished the whole lunch as if everything was fine...

Cozy, hearty & delicious! We loved this place. I got grilled meat and rice which came with miso soup and cucumbers & my partner got crab croquettes which came with rice and miso soup. 10/10
Rick D — Google review
Very popular restaurant in Asahikawa since it was featured in the show : "Kodoru no Gurume". So be prepared to queue up. But the popularity is justified, the Goro Set is very good. The fried crabs creme croquettes are amazing. I also had the pork chop cooked with onions in wine (I suppose because it tasted a bit like bourguignon). The staff is also very friendly and welcoming. My only critique would be that it is a bit expensive for the quantity. I had to take two meals and I wasn't that filled up at the end.

Ootoya is not new name to us. It is one of Japanese chain restaurant that actually open store globally. The taste still hasn’t changed since last time we ate there. Do we still like it?? Yes! If you are looking for simple home dish to fill your stomach, then this is the Place! Not fancy dining, just regular lunch with affordable price. Big portion too! You can ask for volume up rice and buy ala carte side dish below ¥500 in case you are still not full yet. I went here 2-3 times to Asahikawa’s Ootoya and Guest were always waiting in line. This restaurant is also kids friendly. There are 3 choices for Kids Lunch menu. Price wise ? I spent ¥2,400 for 3 people

A great Japanese traditional restaurant with variable menu and friendly staffs! There are plenty options for your food, including chicken/pork/beef/salad for main dish and a bonus set of rice, miso soup and other side dishes. They also serve drinks and desserts separately, aside from the coffee & soft drinks bar. I chose charcoal-grilled chicken meal set with additional vegetable dish and soymilk. The main dish was quite too salty to me, so glad I did order a whole set to eat it with rice. But the restaurant was really crowded so I had to wait like half an hour for my food!

(Translated by Google) When I was in cram school, I went to Ootoya almost every day when it opened in Ikebukuro. It's been decades since then, and when I went there a while ago, the menu had changed quite a bit. Plus, there's no fried food, so it feels good for you...I don't want something good for my body when I eat out, so I didn't go there for a while. Moreover, at that time, it took about 40 minutes to be served, so I thought it would be impossible for me to get it for lunch. This is my second visit after quite a few years. Then, the menu changed completely. Moreover, all the customers are courteous. That's fine. The number of foods that can be eaten for less than 1,000 yen has also increased. In the past, it honestly felt like a dirty set meal restaurant, but now it feels more like a Japanese-style family restaurant. There were also many women and elderly customers. However, the rice was slightly soft and it took about 15 minutes to be served. However, the taste was quite satisfying, so it was my first time at Ootoya in a while, and I thought I'd go back again. Panoramic Flower Gardens Shikisai-no-oka is a popular tourist attraction in Biei, featuring vast and colorful flower gardens that bloom all year round. The gardens showcase a variety of flowers such as tulips, pansies, poppies, lupines, lavender, and marigolds. Visitors can enjoy strolling through the patterned rows of blossoms or opt for a leisurely ride on a tractor bus.
Visited recently in summer and it was very hot and scotching. Recommend to put on sunblock and bring UV umbrella. Flowers were nice. Purchased tickets on the spot via the machines. I do not recommend to take the tram ride as it was only for 15 mins and the farm area is actually walkable. Tram goes one small round and stops for 3mins at a spot for photo taking, brings you back to the original stop and the ride ended.

The view at this place was spectacular. The flowers had a variety of colors and the same was beautiful. The air was refreshing and pictures taken with best with a blue sky. The place was big and you could not finish walking it within 5 hours. You could take a car and drive around it. I visited on a public holiday I did not have to wait and I could buy tickets there directly.

Nice place for flowers field watching but you will pay for the access. The place was extremely crowded, a lot of touristic bus stopped by. The famous potatoes snacks weren't so exciting. They're not salty and not crunchy outside. It was fun renting the kart even though it was expensive compared to the ratio yen/time

Visiting Shikisai-no-oka truly feels like stepping into a painting. The rolling hills are covered with many different kinds of flowers, each arranged carefully to create stunning patterns and colorful waves that stretch across the landscape. From tulips to lavender, sunflowers to marigolds, the gardens showcase the best of every season. What makes this place so special is not only the vibrant colors, but also the way the flowers are planted in creative designs — forming beautiful shapes and breathtaking panoramas that look magical from every angle. Whether you walk among the blooms or view them from above, the scenery is endlessly impressive. The gardens are peaceful, well-kept, and surrounded by the natural beauty of Biei’s gentle hills, making it a perfect place to relax and take photos. Truly, Shikisai-no-oka is a must-visit destination in Hokkaido for anyone who loves nature, flowers, and unforgettable views. 🌿✨

I visited Shikisai-no-Oka in July, and while the weather was hot and humid, arriving right at opening made all the difference. I beat the tour buses and had the chance to capture stunning photos of the vibrant flower fields without crowds. The panoramic views of rolling hills blanketed in seasonal blooms are absolutely breathtaking - like walking through a living painting. Despite the heat, the early morning light and peaceful atmosphere made it a truly memorable experience. Highly recommended for photographers and nature lovers - just go early and bring water!

This flower garden in Biei is very impressive in terms of its expansive size and meticulous upkeep. Spread over rolling hill slopes, the flowering plants create bands of vibrant colours that are a sight to behold. My wife and I visited the garden in July and the flower blooms were fresh and beautiful. Although summer was sunny and hot, our visit was blessed with a very pleasant daytime temperature of 22℃. It was very enjoyable to stroll along the pathways, enjoy the flowers and take photos. As the garden is big, visitors can pay for transport options like tractor-pulled wagons or self-drive golf buggies. At the entrance, there is a big retail shop. Carparking is chargeable at ¥500 per entry and we had to circle around to find a vacant lot. Entry into the garden is also chargeable at ¥500 per adult. Notwithstanding the charges, the garden attracts many visitors. Although the car park was full and the entrance was crowded when we visited, the garden had a relaxing atmosphere as visitors were well spread out across its extensive grounds. In our two trips to Hokkaido, we visited Shikisai-no-Oka and both visits were memorable. It is a “must visit” flower garden.

A reason to come to Furano in itself. There are flowers planted from around April to November every year, so a good six months with varied views as the flower fields are constantly changing depending on the season. The rolling hills create many opportunities for beautiful vistas and photos. The admission fee of 500 yen is incredibly fair too. Definitely a place to visit during Spring, Summer or Autumn.

Nestled atop a hill, Shinei-no-Oka Observatory Park is a serene haven that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Asahikawa region. This picturesque park comes alive in spring with vibrant flower beds adorned with tulips and other seasonal blooms, making it an ideal spot for leisurely strolls, delightful picnics, and capturing stunning photographs. Accessible via rental bicycle or taxi from Biei Station, cycling is highly recommended to fully embrace the refreshing air and gentle breezes of Biei.
I walked there from Miyama togue. It’s very unique experience to just walking by myself on a country side by the fields. There was a cafe, soft ice-cream and vending machine for drink there but they were close when I got there around 5 or 5:30pm. It’s not really a ‘park’ but more an observatory. I saw families driving there with kids. I didn’t stay too long as I walked another hour to the Biei station to catch the train!

Kanno Farm, located between Biei and Kamifurano along National Route 237 in Hokkaido, is a picturesque flower and vegetable farm. With over 30 types of flowers on display from mid-June to mid-October, including lavender, clematis, and salvia, the farm offers stunning views across its rolling landscape. The vibrant blooms create a colorful backdrop for photography enthusiasts. Visitors can also sample fresh produce such as corn and potatoes directly from the farm.
Kanno Farm is located on a hill slope besides National Route 237. It has ample car parks. Whereas Farm Tomita and Shikisai-no-Oka are often crowded with tourists arriving in tour coaches, Kanno Farm is less commercialised and therefore, less crowded. Although Kanno Farm is not big, it has rolling hill slopes of lavender and other flowering plants. Paths lead up to the hill top where visitors can enjoy a downhill view of the flowering garden. There is a small retail and refreshment area in a building besides the car park. My wife and I visited Kanno Farm in July as part of other attractions in Biei. We enjoyed the less busy environment and were able to better appreciate the flowers.

(Plz be aware)It was a beautiful farm, we were on the way towards the top point which we thought that was an observation desk. We took the left side trail trying to make a big round of the farm. Somehow in the middle we got yelled out by a Japanese(later we learned he is the farm owner). He claimed that we stepped into a preserve area and he needed to disinfect the entire area because our shoes had bacteria. He wanted to fine us ¥10000. He said if you didn’t pay, he’d called the police. We paid because we wanted to move on our trip.

While looking back on my trip around Northeast Asia over the past few weeks, I came across something pretty shocking in the reviews. Apparently, someone was fined 10,000Yen (about $65) for stepping into a restricted area — and there were quite a few similar stories too. I actually saw the rude employee(or the owner) at that same place yelling, pointing, and almost charging at my friend. It was honestly way over the line. Part of me wondered if it happened because we were Southeast Asian — maybe it was even a bit of discrimination. There was also a small fence with a path beyond it, but no warning signs anywhere. I mean, people make mistakes — and it’s not hard to imagine someone with a disability, a kid, or even a dog accidentally stepping over such a low fence. Is it really fair to fine people like that when there aren’t even any warning signs? If this has happened multiple times already, there are plenty of simple fixes — raise the fence, put up signs, whatever. Instead, it feels like they’d rather collect 10,000 yen from unlucky visitors. I really hope the owner thinks about whether it’s smarter to keep doing that or to make the place more welcoming for tourists. Either way, we’ll never go there again — and we definitely wouldn’t recommend it to anyone around us.

Saw this beautiful farm while on my way to Asahidake Ropeway. Beautiful flowers with various colour, definitely a must visit to snap photos. No charges to enter but will be good to buy a hot coffee or potato bread or cider to support the farm.

Such a beautiful farm. Definitely worth a visit when you're in the area. It is not too large, but a decent size, so you can really enjoy the place without spending far too much time. There is a nice little shop and restaurant. The potato dishes are great!

Hokusei-no-oka Observatory Park, located in Biei, Hokkaido, is a picturesque spot known for its stunning views and diverse blooms throughout the year. The pyramid-shaped observatory offers panoramic vistas of the hilly area and patchwork fields of Biei. Visitors can capture beautiful scenes of sunflowers and lavender from the observation deck, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.
Very good view point of the surrounding. Sadly I was not here in the summer to see the flowers. Bit the view point on the valley and montain is good. There is a photo shop nearby that you must visit.
Argotax — Google review
Visited on 23 June 2025. Nice view of surrounding Biei but no sight of any flower fields. Only a small patch of lavender and a slightly larger canola field was present. It was still a pleasant visit with good views.

Harvey ( — Google review
Visited during summer and was a nice place to walk off around with the kids. The views of the surrounding "patchwork" fields was also great, viewed from the observatory. Also has some souvenir shops and a few spots to pick up a quick bite. Toilets are also there. It was quite busy when we went with lots of tourists. Recommended.
Michael G — Google review
A good pitstop from biei to asahikawa (15km or so to the town) . You will have to climb to level 2 of the deck to see a paranoma view of the area. The entry is free and car-parking is free too. The park itself has walking routes, but i did not attempt to walk. So im not sure of the quality of walk in the area. There are a few shops opposite the carpark. The shops are closing when we reached around 1645hrs and closed by 1700hrs. Toilets are available here, but kinda of smelly.

Hokusei Slope observatory is in the same area as Biei's famous trees, especially the Ken and Mary tree. If you're in the area it's well worth a stop. It has great views across Biei and the valley to Tokachi Dake. There's parking, toilets and yatai food stalls. Make sure Google maps takes you to the top parking area not the bottom.

we went there during winter, everything was covered with thick ice. all the shop was close and i think we are not suppose to go up the tower is it is slippery and you cant see the path. no one was there, so we decided to go up.

The Tree of Ken and Mary is a tall poplar tree located in the Biei Shirogane hot spring resort area, known for its appearance in a 1970s Nissan commercial. It stands out in the area and is easily recognizable. The subterranean waterfall nearby, with water flowing from the Tokachidake mountain range, adds to the natural beauty of the surroundings.
The Tree of Ken and Mary is a beautiful and iconic spot in Biei, known for its role in a famous commercial for the Nissan Skyline. Visiting in winter, we found the landscape (fukei) around the tree truly breathtaking, with snow-covered fields stretching out into the distance. The tree, standing alone against the vast, snowy backdrop, creates a peaceful and almost nostalgic scene, especially for fans of the commercial. Winter brings a quiet beauty to the area, making it an ideal time for those who enjoy tranquil, scenic views and a touch of cinematic history.

Nestled atop a picturesque hill, the Seven Stars Tree is an iconic oak that has captured the hearts of many since 1976. This solitary tree offers stunning panoramic views of Patchwork Road, making it a must-visit spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. Originally known as Kitaei-no-Ippon Ki, its fame skyrocketed when it was featured on the packaging for Seven Stars cigarettes by Japan Tobacco.
This is the tree that gained popularity as a tourist attraction after being featured in Japan Tobacco’s ‘Seven Stars’ advertisement in 1976. However, the famous birch tree-lined road of Patchwork Road was completely cut down in January 2025 due to the disruptive behaviour of both Chinese and domestic tourists. I visited in December 2024.

Nothing much to see since it is only a tree , anyhow the circumstance is beautiful and so breezy. You can enjoy the clean fresh air and very lovely sky by super wide view.

It is a tree. Its claim to fame is having been featured on a cigarette packaging about 50 years ago. If you were not a smoker then, you would not appreciate the reference. You can however, admire its age and the shade it provides on a hot summer day, being one of the only publicly accessible trees in the farmland. There is free parking across the road, very popular with tourists. It will probably be a 5 min pitstop to check out, on your way to other more interactive attractions

The Seven Stars Tree in Biei is an iconic sight known for its picturesque beauty, or fukei. This lone oak tree stands proudly in the middle of vast fields, creating a stunning backdrop that has made it a favorite photo spot for visitors. It gained national fame after appearing in a popular tobacco commercial for Seven Stars cigarettes, which is how it earned its name. Surrounded by Biei’s rolling hills and colorful fields, the Seven Stars Tree captures the serene, open landscape that defines the area’s charm. Although I visited Seven Stars Tree in winter, it still possesses its charm even if it doesn't have its beautiful lush green leaves.

Asahikawa Airport is a small and well-organized airport with efficient transportation options. It's easily accessible from Asahikawa Station, making it convenient for travelers. The airport offers a great selection of reasonably priced food and souvenir shops, as well as an enjoyable observation deck to watch planes take off against the snowy backdrop. Despite its size, the airport is well-equipped and modern, providing a pleasant travel experience for visitors.
V impressed with this airport. My expectations were low for a small airport in a small town in Hokkaido! Pleasantly surprised by the modern amenities and wide array of food (ramen, kaisen don, curry, teppan)
Ming C — Google review
This airport was the perfect size with just enough amenities to meet a couple hours while waiting for a flight. It's very close to the rental cars, especially Toyota car rentals. They have a blend of gift stores with local delicacies, various trinkets, and travel bags including tax free service if you are a foreigner. The dining options available are actually very good from local ramen to a milk stand with delicious soft serve. But I wanted to write this review because of the information desk and the service they provided after losing a phone on the car rental shuttle bus. We had just under an hour before departure, when we realized we lost our phone. We knew where we lost it, and quickly tried to call Toyota rental, but my Japanese is not advanced enough to communicate with the rental agent. I went down to the rental car area on the 1st floor and the rental desk was closed (as expected, since they only staff it when someone is expected to pickup a rental car on arrival), however the information staff understood what happened and quickly called Toyota for me and explained. After a few minutes, they said everything is okay, and the Toyota rental car agent brought my phone to the information desk!! The relief was indescribable. Thank you to the Asahikawa information booth staff for helping resolve this situation and to the Toyota rental car staff who helped to find and bring the phone back. 🙏🙏🙏

Asahikawa Airport is an excellent choice for travelers seeking convenience and efficiency. We flew in from Tokyo, and the experience was smooth from start to finish. The airport is not crowded, making it easy to navigate and stress-free compared to larger hubs. Facilities are well-maintained, with clean toilets that are a big plus for families or long-haul travelers. There’s also a food court offering a variety of meals and snacks, perfect for grabbing a quick bite before or after a flight. The souvenir shop has a good selection of local products, making it easy to pick up gifts or mementos of your trip.

Asahikawa Airport is a charming and efficient regional airport that offers a pleasant travel experience. The airport's compact size ensures that everything is easily accessible, making the transition from landing to cab pick-up remarkably quick and hassle-free. The facilities are well-maintained and clean, with a range of dining options and souvenir shops that showcase local specialties. One of the standout features is the flight viewing deck, which provides a fantastic vantage point to watch planes take off and land. This spacious deck, complete with seating, is a delightful addition that aviation enthusiasts and families will love. On clear days, the surrounding scenery, including distant mountains, adds to the experience, making the flight viewing platform a sweet topper to an already enjoyable airport visit. Additionally, don't miss the lovely cream dispenser lady offering delicious Hokkaido milk products – a delightful treat that adds to the airport's charm.

Small and efficient. 4 minutes from landing to exit (I didn’t have luggage. Has a few shops, a Lawson, car rental and information desks. Enjoyed the charging area on the 3rd floor (it’s free) before I flew back out.

Haneda, Narita, Itami, Shin-Chitose, and some international flights are in service. In terms of companies, there is ANA JAL AirDO JetStar and some foreign airlines. There is a food court and it is okay to take a flight at noon. For some reason, there was a flight simulator (a simple one). Buses were available to Asahikawa and Furano city. The observation deck is on the second floor, where you can see airplanes up close.

AEON Asahikawa Ekimae is a supermarket located on the 1st floor of AEON Dream City, right next to JR Asahikawa Station. It's part of the AEON Group, which operates over 600 large shopping centers across Japan. The supermarket offers a wide range of products focusing on food, beauty, and health, including food items, cosmeceuticals, alcohol, seasonal fruits and vegetables, pharmaceuticals, and daily necessities.
I love buying my dinner at the supermarket in Aeon Mall. There’s also a lot of souvenirs you can buy that you can only find in Hokkaido. It is connected directly to JR station

My review is for the supermarket only. Lots of cooked food/bento to choose from. Very helpful for tourists staying in hotels in the area. There are self check out counters too with easy instructions in English. Better if you bring your own bag for your groceries as you will need to buy the plastic bag if you don't have one. Accepts credit card.

This mall opens at 8am along with the super market and Starbucks. There is a small daiso in this location. Like many of Japan's station, this mall is filled with cute cookies/ confectionary items. There is a food court on the first floor. There are more restaurants located on the top floor. Surprisingly I saw a pet store. It also has a sugi bee which has great honey and soft serve. There is a small arcade too! A good place to spend some time or shop for luggage. The luggages were not cheap, most were Asian brands ( 15000+ yen), did see one for 8800 yen.

Plenty of food and was surprised with the ramen inside the food court. After having a few ramen sessions of various shops at Sapporo (overrated and too salty), this Aeon’s ramen, my family (3 of us) view it is the best of our trip. You can add on additional Cha Shu and some tempura next door to make it complete. Also many interesting buns and so on inside this Aeon.

The Snow Crystal Museum in Asahikawa, Hokkaido is a charming and compact museum that celebrates the beauty of snowflakes. The museum's architecture resembles a snowflake itself, with white walls and ice columns creating an enchanting atmosphere. Inside, visitors can explore displays of ice crystal images and artistic exhibits showcasing the delicate structure of snowflakes. The European-style castle design adds to the magical ambiance, making it feel like something out of a fairy tale or movie like Frozen.
Great place to visit with pretty frosted glass designs. Very photogenic place and romantic for couples. Family with children will be able to link it to fairy tale castles.
Wee C — Google review
The ticket for one adult is 700 yens. In my opinion, it's not worth it. There isn't too much to see. Yes, it's pretty and has some cool ice inside, but that's it, there isn't too much else to see. A shop, an event room, a video library, which is everything in Japanese. It has a restaurant inside, but you can access to it from outside the museum. The money doesn't worth the visit.
Mariano M — Google review
Exquisite place with elegant snow design everywhere and stunning halls! There are only some designated rooms so to be honest it's all more like a feast to eyes than an interesting experience. And despite the map it's still hard to make the way since all rooms are connected and there are two floors, making it harder to find directions. The restaurant only offers like 5 lunch sets but it's well-prepared and worthy, about ¥1200-1500 for a lunch set with a main dish, salad/bread, soup and dessert, or ¥500-800 for dessert only. Even the dishes are inspired by the signature snow design!
Quinn'z L — Google review
I'd call it more of an event hall, with a small element of "museum". There's plaques in Japanese, English, and Chinese, so you can learn all about the formation, crystallization, and science of snowflakes in three languages. If you like sparkly things, there's plenty of that to entertain the eyes. If you're also the sort who likes to get dressed up like a pretty princess, they also have a photo package and rental service. Just call ahead to make a reservation though.
Jenny B — Google review
Best if you could understand Japanese. Entrance fee: ¥700 for adults (¥650 if you log on to their website and find the discount coupon) ¥500 for University Students (student card is required) ¥550? A little cheaper for high school students or below. There’s a bridal service too. And if you’re a cosplayer, it would be suitable for photoshoot.
Shu Y — Google review
A romantic scenic spot. The 'museum' displays quite a number of 'snow'-like exhibits. With the crystal lamps, this place is decorated as a castle in Frozen. There is also a hall for wedding or music performance, with more than 140 seats. The time spent in this place is around 30 to at most 45 minutes.

Had pasta for dinner. Got a total of 4 pasta to share. The Neapolitan pasta was awesome. The carbonara not so. The lemon cream was decent. The cold pasta was good. Yes taste is subjective but this is coming from someone who loves carbonara and hates meat sauce so.. the bread does come in a rolling basis so good job to the team for constantly refilling the bread supply!

Amazing pork cutlet. I asked for the leanest and was recommended the fillet - it was so tender, crispy yet not oily. The accompanying cabbage, which was finely cut, after adding some sesame sauce, was a perfect side dish to the pork - light, crunchy, tasty. Not for people who want a fancy ambience, but I definitely challenge anyone who wants a good meal to try this.

Very good tonkatsu on a side street away from the main promenade. Had the double portion of filet and loin. One was juicier than the other, probably the loin which had a bit of fat. Unusual corn dressing for the cabbage. Overall, enjoyed the meal.

Had a great experience dining here. The atmosphere was easy and the interior was modern and clean. The staff were attentive and had amazing attention to detail. They noticed I was a gaijin and provided me with an English menu. I had the chance to sit at the bar and watch the head chef do his thing. I ordered the loin & fillet combo set, and was able to get refills on soup, rice and cabbage as usual. I personally enjoyed the loin for the chewiness but both pieces were crispy, tasty and breaded perfectly. No doubt this is one of the best tonkatsu I’ve had, and certainly better than any I’ve had (and I’ve been to A LOT!) in Mainland Japan/Taiwan/Hawaii/ Would recommend to anyone in this area!

Chef and their service staff welcomes you with the biggest smile at first sight. Restaurant is clean, bright and provides English menu. Ordered sirloin and the upper grade sirloin. Personally i prefers lean meat hence the former suits me best. Cabbage was chilled, fresh and sweet - add sesame sauce to your liking. Thanks for the wonderful dinner on my special day! Will definitely visit when i am back for a visit !

Japanese curry restaurant
Hokkaido Soup Curry Okushiba Shouten asahikawatei is a must-visit in Sapporo, just a 5-minute walk from the station. This Hokkaido specialty offers a wide variety of local veggies and meat cooked in tasty curry broth, served with rice for dipping. The restaurant's nostalgic interior adds to its charm, located in what seems to be a renovated old home.
How to say? I really love this restaurant style. When we enter to each room or each floor then we feel nostalgia. I give five stars because of the restaurant interior. The curry soup is unique style which you could not found in any place. The taste is nice. By the way, there are many customers during the meal time. You need to prepare for the waiting time.

The prawn soup curry with prawn soup thickness of 5 and spicy level 3, just the perfect combination to us. Retro decoration. Hiding in housing area. Nearby parking is available. Can refer to the map in front of the restaurant.

If you come to visit Sapporo and are starving, this is a 5 min walk from Sapporo Station and is honestly one of the tastiest things I've eaten in a while... Soup curry is a Hokkaido specialty and is definitely a must try if you are visiting. After eating it, you might just decide to stay ;P The soup curry here is a wide variety of delicious local veggies and a choice of meat cooked in tasty curry broth. You get rice on the side too and it's nice to eat by dipping it in the broth. Everything is cooking right in the open too, so it's a fun experience if you sit at the counter. The hostess was a bit cold to us (I was with a Japanese person who was a local, so it wasn't just being a foreigner...), but it was near the lunch rush hour, so I understand. The food still makes it a 5/5.
Balys G — Google review
This place is hidden among houses and is amazing! The soup curry is a little thicker than others but you have the choice of chicken or prawn broth and they are both tasty. They have an extensive list of toppings as well. Highly recommend this gem.
Sid P — Google review
Love this curry soup with special dish of four kinds of shrimp cooking methods. It’s not too spicy when you choose level 4 of spicy. A little worse thing is that fried vegetables are oily.
Siobhan Y — Google review
Delicious. I can see why it is rated so high.
Shawne K — Google review
Okushiba shouten is great. Fun concept of setting up soup curry shops in old houses and furnishing with everything from retro televisions to vintage posters. Now, there is a likelihood you’ll have to wait to be seated, but it’s worth the wait. Many menu items are quite limited. Ask what’s still available before you make up your mind from the menu so you’re not disappointed upon ordering. There’re two soup options. The chicken is pretty standard. For a bit more a flavor punch, I recommend the shrimp based soup. There are no really wrong options as far as the menu goes. Slow-cooked chicken or pork and even vegetable only options. Do be careful though when ordering multiple toppings. The first one is free, after that they’re each an additional charge. Not a cheap meal by Japanese standards, but you’re paying for novelty and quality. Parking is down the road a block. There’re also Sapporo and Tokyo shops.

Tokiwa Park, situated in the heart of Asahikawa, is the city's first public park and a serene oasis. The spacious grounds feature two large ponds where graceful swans glide amidst cherry blossoms in summer and vibrant foliage in autumn. Throughout the year, visitors can revel in the beauty of various flowers such as tulips, marigolds, and scarlet sage.
Tokiwa Park (常磐公園) is a serene urban oasis in central Asahikawa, celebrated as the city’s first public park and recognized among Japan’s top 100 city parks. Established in 1910 and spanning about 16 hectares along the Ishikari River, it offers a harmonious blend of lush greenery, tranquil ponds, and cultural facilities. The park features two elegant ponds—“Chidoriga-ike” (Plover Pond) and “Hakucho-ike” (Swan Pond)—where visitors can enjoy boating, spot birds, and marvel at seasonal reflections of cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. Its tree canopy, populated by willows, poplars, poppies, and stewartia, changes character with each season—cherry blossoms in spring, tranquil lotus blooms in summer, fiery reds in autumn, and sparkling snow lanterns in winter. Cultural touches abound with outdoor sculptures (Asahikawa is known as the “City of Sculpture”) and on-site facilities including the Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art and Asahikawa Central Library. The park also hosts vibrant local events like the “Tabe Marche” food fair in September, fireworks in summer, and snow lanterns during the Asahikawa Winter Festival. It's easily reached—a short bus ride from Asahikawa Station—making it a convenient retreat for both locals and visitors. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful stroll under blooming sakura, a paddle across a mirror-like pond, an art-filled afternoon, or seasonal festivities, Tokiwa Park offers a diverse and enriching experience that reflects the changing moods of Hokkaido.

A fairly open land on the edge of the river that is often used as a place for events, especially winter festivals. The park itself is beautiful and attractive. It is also spacious.

This is the must visit park which is closed to many high rate hotel such as Marriott Sapporo, InterContinental, JAL, etc., and right at the Nakajima Station. This park has A big pond with many old Ginko trees

This was the first stop for my partner and I on our one night stay in Asahikawa. It is a short 25 minutes walk from the JR station and is certainly well worth it! Perhaps it was an off-peak season, but we were essentially the only ones in the whole park and we could enjoy the time strolling around leisurely which was very romantic. We came across a shrine with a cute crossing bridge, a lovely pond where you can rent small boats to paddle on and big open spaces where we saw beautiful tulips! There seems to be fairly easy and accessible parking available, as well as very clean bathrooms located around the park. Definitely a must-go if you are in Asahikawa for a stroll or to sit by the pond and unwind :)

Asahikawa Station is a bustling hub for travelers, offering easy access to the Heiwa Shopping Street and various attractions. The station serves as a convenient starting point for visiting popular destinations such as Asahiyama Zoo, Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Kinenkan, Otokoyama Sake Brewery, and Ramen Village.
Lovely and beautiful train station especially in winter where the track covered by snow. Not a busy station and beutiful interior design. The bus terminal is just outside the train station and people here are friendly and nice. A grandma who cant speak english even try help and lead us into correct queue line for bus.

The aesthetics of this station is just fantastic. It's wood-themed interior and the art displays inside makes it look like a museum of sorts. If you are going around Hokkaido, Asahikawa Station is conveniently located in the heart of the prefecture hence it is where you should stay if you want to explore Hokkaido's natural beauty. This station is literally at the heart of Hokkaido.

Very clean. Simple layout. They also have a Tourist Info Center, bike rentals, souvenir shop, lockers, and vending machines. You can get the bus schedules in Tourist info center. Either you talk to the staff or get one of their flyers with the bus schedule (in English) Connected to the adjacent AEON Mall.

Asahikawa is a nice regional hub, with connections to Sapporo, Wakkanai, Furano and Kitami. It's a huge station with many restaurants and shops. It was all really nicely decorated for the Christmas season. Really beautiful with all the snow too, although they don't seem to be shoveling a path through the snow
Ruddy D — Google review
I rated this 5 stars because this is, in my opinion, the most beautiful station (in terms of interior design) I've ever been in Japan. The warm and minimalist aesthetics of its modern hallways adorned by the wooden walls give it more of a museum vibe than a station. Students stay in the evening hours to study at station hallways, enjoying the relaxed and calm atmosphere. Commuters perhaps give respect to the superb architectural space by behaving in a quiet subdued manner. The elegant finish extend even at the square fronting the station and mall. The wide, unobstructed vista of the square complements the aesthetics of the station's interiors.
Ito R — Google review
It's a massive station. I had to ask for assistance at various points. But when I go back, I'll get used to it.

One of the most memorable JR stations I have been to from an architectural perspective. Visited during summer 2019. The station was designed by Naito Architect & Associates. The modern exterior facade is beautiful, and the wooden interior feels cozy and spacious. The plaza outside the station is great for a leisure walk. A must visit for architectural enthusiasts

AEON MALL Asahikawa Ekimae is a popular destination in Japan, offering a wide range of shops and services. The mall features various stores selling groceries, clothing, hiking gear, and electronics. Visitors can also enjoy the food court on the first floor, which offers options like McDonald's, ramen, and rice/meat bowls. Additionally, the fourth floor houses a cinema and several restaurants serving pasta, meat dishes, all-you-can-eat buffets, and Japanese specialties.
We went there to do some shopping for our meals' needs. The shopping is decent amd well stocked with needed items for cooking. We does took few items that's prepack meals. Prices are reasonable

This shopping mall, located just beside the main JR station has all the amenities you can ask for. There are restaurants, a grocery store, many clothing and accessories stores as well as gift shops. A lot of the stores here offer tax-free for foreign visitors too. I'm amazed at how convenient this mall is, and how much necessary items that we needed during our travels in Hokkaido. We'll definitely be visiting this mall again in the future when we visit Asahikawa again!

Tsuboya Kibana no mori is a multi-functional complex in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, operated by Tsuboya. It offers traditional pastries, cakes, coffee, and tea in a relaxed space with light-wood decor and garden seating. The facility includes a convenience shop and other cultural attractions nearby. Visitors can watch the making of Kibana confections and even try their hand at making sweets in the kitchen.
White chocolate specialty. This shop has many premium confectionery and snacks. The signature white chocolate confectionery is expensive but worth it. The staff is very friendly. No tax free available. Free parking onsite.

Pi E — Google review
Kibana no Mori is not your typical omiyage (souvenir) shop. It’s more like a multi-functional space, integrating several services under one roof. Aside from its own retail space showcasing its popular confections, it also has a cafe where guests could enjoy some of their sweet creations, as well as a library with books for guests to read free of charge (unfortunately it’s all in Japanese), all housed next to their production kitchens where their famous confections, cakes and pastries are made. They even have culinary classes for kids. Tsuboya, the company behind Kibana no Mori, is known for their confection, the Kibana, which won numerous Monde Selection awards and has become their main product. Kibana no Mori is the only place in Hokkaido where all 3 flavours of Kibana are sold (i.e. original, strawberry and chocolate). They have free samples for all 3 flavours which you can try at the retail section. The Kibana tastes really good and makes a perfect gift. Visiting Kibana no Mori was definitely one of the few memorable highlights from my recent trip to Asahikawa. The decor and style of the place has a modern Japanese feel, using a lot of wood with simple clean designs and utilising natural and warm lighting, creating a warm and cozy ambience. Lounging at the cafe while enjoying the cakes and coffee while overlooking their garden felt so relaxing and peaceful. One thing that you have to try would be their apple pie which is very popular with the locals. It’s got this lovely flaky crust that just crumbles in your mouth. The diced apples were perfectly cooked and still has that bite to it which was great (hate it when the apples are overcooked making soft a mushy). It was also not overly sweet with a nice refreshing tanginess. The apples were enveloped with a thin layer of frangipane, adding a dash of nutty aroma. As for their other cake and snack selections, it really depends on what you order. Some are pretty good while others are pretty average. The place is pretty quiet during the weekdays but gets more local crowd on the weekends (we visited the place twice, once on a weekday and once on a weekend, and noticed the difference in the crowd). Please do note that if you wish to try their apple pie, it’s best to try it on a weekday as it’ll be sold out very quickly on a weekend, unless you arrive there early on a weekend. I noticed that practically all their customers are locals. It could be that most tourists either don’t know of the place or don’t know how to get here as it’s inconvenient get to (not near a train station or requires a lot of walking) Fear not as it’s as simple as taking a bus. Just head on over to bus stop number 27 (located in front of Hotel Route-Inn Grand Asahikawa Ekimae) and take bus 71. Then get off at 5 jo 20 chome (if you’re unsure you can refer to Google maps for navigation, just remember to get off just before the cross junction a street away from the building as the bus will turn the other direction away from the building). If you’re a fan of sweets, confections and lounging at relaxing cafes, then this place is recommended for you. It’s definitely 4 stars in my books.

One of the worst Japanese restaurants in terms of the food quality. The beef is made from rubber, you chew until the cow comes home, it is still intact. Rice is watery. Rarely a Japanese food tasting this bad. I will take the convenience seicomart store bento box anytime. It is just bad.

(Translated by Google) My honest opinion is that it's a rip-off! A scam! It feels like the 7-Eleven's "Upper Bottom" scam! The amount of beef stew that came out was so insane that I tried the ingredients first to get a better idea, and this is what it was!! The amount of stew was way below the spoon level, and if I tilted the pot, there was almost nothing left!! I finished it in 3.5 spoonfuls. And they added the ingredients to the remaining portion and served it? And the stew was still really warm. I can't believe that this costs over 1500 yen!! I complained to someone working at Aeon Mall and they told me not to go there! They said it was awful, lol. They said they wish it would just disappear. 😅 I should have read the reviews first! I didn't realize it would be this bad! I'm never going back! I think there are better places to spend 1500 yen on, so most people won't become repeat customers after one visit. I wonder if the staff don't think anything of it? Anyway, I don't recommend this restaurant. If you're thinking of going here, if you're going to spend the same amount of money, the tonkatsu restaurant across the street is worlds better 😋 (Original)

Worst gyoza I've ever had. Burnt gyoza and the bottom fell off and it's expensive for the quality. Bad service as they said it was supposed to be like this but other pictures are not like this. Ramen is decent but salty. Do not recommend.
Athena — Google review
The ramen here was ok, and the size was decent for the price. I just couldn't help but notice how raw and hard the noodles were, even inside the hot soup broth as if it was just leftovers dumped into the bowl. The sesame paste miso broth tasted good though. But I don't see myself coming here again, as there are better ramen restaurants in Asahikawa.

Shōga Rāmen Mizuno is a renowned ramen shop in Asahikawa, established in 1967. It's famous for its signature dish, the Shoga (ginger) Ramen, which features soy sauce ramen topped with grated ginger that emits a refreshing aroma. The soup base combines high-quality ginger from Kochi prefecture with pork broth and soy sauce, creating a clean and balanced flavor.
The elderly couple has been selling authentic ramen for more than 30 years in this same shop. I liked the authenticity old fashion built and when served with my bowl of ramen, it taste really delicious. I highly recommend if you are in Asahikawa.

Paqui R — Google review
Very clean tasting soy & ginger soup base - perfect balance of spicy was from ginger and saltiness from the soy sauce. Can see bits of grated ginger in the soup. Mouth felt clean and not greasy at all afterwards. Also had the miso (they use white miso from Hokkaido) which was also very clean and light taste compared to the usual red miso. Only ¥700 each bowl. Ramen noodles cooked just right. Only seats about 22 people in the shop. You can see the years of history at this store run by an old couple. Supremely enjoyable! 😋
Phoebe — Google review
Mizuno is another long established ramen shop in Asahikawa that is famed for their ginger ramen. It is located next to Tokiwa Park just off the roundabout. Without a doubt, the star of the dish is definitely the soup, which has a generous teaspoon of ginger from Kochi Prefecture added. The ginger, shoyu and pork broth all blend together harmoniously, creating a very complex tasty soup with a hue character. The addition of ginger adds a refreshing lightness, and he subtle spiciness from the soup feels very warm and comforting. Another reason why I also love the soup is because it’s to overly salty and isn’t loaded with msg, making you feel thirsty afterwards. Unfortunately the char siew and noodles were not as appetising. The char siew was very dry, tough and extremely salty. It tasted like corned beef for some weird reason. The noodles, though smooth and has a nice chewy texture, had a strong ammonia smell, probably due to too much lye being used in the noodles. Mizuno probably has the best tasting soup in Asahikawa. However it is ruined by the unappealing char siew and noodles. And sadly because of that, I’m only Ble to give it 2 stars.

Izakaya restaurant
Ofune is a well-established izakaya located in the lively area of Sanroku, at 3 jo street 6 chome. This place has been cherished by locals for over 40 years and is known for its historical ambiance, adorned with celebrity signatures from the 1940s and high school flags. The menu offers superb dishes like "urine" (tasting like potatoes) and exquisite seafood such as crab, oysters, Atka mackerel, and tachi.
Yummy oyster! Overall very nice food and good service
Shikei A — Google review
You will be welcomed by the strong smell of cigarette. I'm not not sure why this place is popular. It seems to be a popular because there's tons pictures on the walls. While the service is fine, the food is generally bad. The portions are very small and it's extremely expensive. One small fried shrimp costs 1500¥! The fish wasn't really fresh or appetizing. I recommend avoiding this place.
Robert M — Google review
This Izakaya has a lovely cosy ambience and a wonderfully warm host who speaks some English. There is no English menu so take note of prices when ordering. The host made some suggestions for us and also provided a few things “on the house” (a shot of sake and a piece of delicious crab-infused tofu). We didn’t over eat and were very surprised at the cost of our meal. It was very expensive! We left feeling like we’d been a bit seduced by the host’s charm and overcharged.
Rachel B — Google review
This place didn't blow me away. Especially not with cost taken into account. I loved the ambience and the service. The decor was fun and made for an enjoyable experience. However the food just didn't love up. The sashimi and the grilled fish was bland. The ikura don was good and I'd love to get that and some uni again. Overall, I'd probably swing by furarito instead to try out an assortment of izakayas.

The Oofune Izakaya is truly a special place. It's got an atmosphere that really shows the history of the place, from celebrity signatures from the 1940s to Koshien flags of nearby high schools hanging on the walls. The food itself is superb as well, and I absolutely recommend the "urine". (Tastes like potatoes!) The 80s Pop/J-Pop playlist playing in the background is awesome as well. All in all, the izakaya really is, as the Japanese review underneath mine says, "Asahikawa's Treasure".

The Hokkaido Ice Pavilion in Asahikawa offers a unique experience of winter even in the summer months. The facility features an ice tunnel with temperatures as low as -20C, a wall of icicles, and an extreme cold corner reaching -41C. Visitors can also enjoy activities like sliding on snow and feeding goats. The ice hall covers 600m2 and contains around 1,000 tons of ice, providing a stunning backdrop for photos.
Highly recommend this place. You'll have the opportunity to experience -21°C and -41°C. Went there today for a break due to the heavy snow, and we were the only guests on arrival. The staff were kind and passionate, although we were the only visitors. Warm tea was given after the cold room. There is a shrine and a slide outside. The slide cost 200 JPY, but the staff let us use it for free. The slide is highly recommended and it made my day, thanks to the staff. Their kindness and energy; I will always remember.

For anyone coming from a country without snow, Hokkaido Ice Pavilion is such a fascinating place to visit! ❄️ It’s your chance to experience what –21°C actually feels like — an exciting kind of cold that’s both fun and unforgettable. It’s so freezing that even a wet towel turns solid in seconds! The staff there are super friendly and attentive, offering the kind of excellent service you can always expect in Japan. The place itself is clean, well-maintained, and beautifully designed. If you’ve never experienced snow or extreme cold before, this is definitely a must-visit spot — a special place to feel that icy chill at least once in your life. I drove there from my accommodation, which took about an hour, and since it was autumn, the scenery along the way was absolutely stunning. The whole trip was totally worth it! 🚗🍁

There was nothing much to see in this establishment. -41C experience was just fans blowing cold air right at you. 200yen sled ride inside was kind of a ripoff, took less than 10 seconds. They give you a hot tea drink right after you finish touring around inside.

Around 20 to 30 minutes' visit to the art museum was a great experience. The staff were nice, and it was fun for someone like me who came from a hot place. After walking through the museum, you can also try getting a fortune ticket and writing your wishes on wood. A fun and worthwhile place to visit!

Friendly staffs who greet tourists. A chance to experience the coldness between minus 20 to minus 41 degrees. Thick clothings are provided for warmth. Nothing much to see inside actually but just for the cold experience. Love the artsy restrooms beside the cafe. After the coldness, enjoying a cup of hot tea feels nice

Was a fun experience. Took around an hour to cover everything. All staff are very friendly. 1000 yen for a ticket. +200 yen for the ice slide. +100 yen to feed the goats.

The exhibit of Tambo art (Art on rice fields -Asahikawa) is a beautiful sight to behold. The locals have been diligently creating these pictures for many years and it is amazing to see the level of detail and creativity that goes into them. Visitors should be very cautious when visiting the viewing platforms, as there are often dangerous cliffs nearby that can easily trap unsuspecting tourists.
The Tambo Art in Asahikawa is a visual masterpiece that keeps me coming back every year. Each visit feels like a new adventure, as the intricate designs and themes change annually, showcasing a perfect blend of creativity and agricultural ingenuity. What makes this experience special is not just the stunning artwork created from different rice varieties but also the anticipation of discovering the year’s theme. It’s incredible to see how this unique form of art transforms ordinary rice fields into vibrant canvases, celebrating culture, history, and community spirit. Visiting Tambo Art has become a cherished tradition for me, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable and unique experience in Asahikawa.

Located in the Ishikawa River valley at the border between the Kamikawa Basin and the Ishikari Plain, Kamuy Kotan is a beautiful spot with scenic greenschist cliffs and rapids. The Ainu people of the area used waterways as their main means of transportation, and this scenic spot is known for its picturesque fall foliage.

Done hiking both 神居岩 and 神居 hiking courses. The condition of the path wasn't good which was very narrow, rockily and full of glasses (and I felt like I am following the animal's path) so you need to be well equipped and should wear hiking boots. 神居岩 route was harder but better than the other. You'll have nice view from the summit!! There is a loo and free parking spot.

Tomiichi is a ramen shop located in Kamikawa, which has gained popularity for its unique take on ramen. The chashu is served warm, unlike other places where it's cold because it's served afterwards. The ramen soup has a strong taste of salt and dried sardines, making it not suitable for those who don't like sardines.

Sushi restaurant
Sushi Minato is a top sushi restaurant in Asahikawa, offering a unique and exceptional dining experience. Guests can expect to try various kinds of sushi not commonly found in omakase restaurants. The grilled hokkigai is particularly impressive. While some reviews mention potential language barriers for foreigners, others have had different experiences. It's advisable to make reservations as the restaurant tends to be fully booked.
This is an absolute top sushi restaurant and I mean one of the very best sushi restaurants in Japan (or the world). Some very interesting twists to many dishes. If you want really spoil yourself while in Asahikawa, this must be the place to go. This place deserves a much higher rating on Google maps.

Had a wonderful time last night! Tried many kinds of sushi that’s not commonly seen in omakase restaurants in the US. The grilled hokkigai was really impressive! There are a few low starred comments about foreigners which we noticed shortly before going. We had a different experience. First, reservation is probably required. The restaurant puts on 满席 sign, meaning fully booked, for both counter and dining room last night. It is common for a popular sushi place to be fully booked for a while; we reserved 6 weeks in advance. Second, knowing a bit Japanese would be helpful if not essential to the experience. My partner’s Japanese was pretty rudimentary while I only knew the 50 sounds; we were able to order drinks just fine, phew! Helping a lot is that both of us are avid sushi fans so we know the names of the fish by sound, but I doubt you’d need that to enjoy. Overall, a lovely experience. We are both awed by how much work the chefs were able to handle, processing omakase menus and dining room orders at the same time. A feast for the eyes (and of course stomach too! :))

Didn’t know a reservation is needed. I’m from Singapore. Apparently they don’t welcome foreigners. The lady at the door greeted me with ‘reservation??’ I asked if they have table for 2 and I didn’t know a reservation was needed. She was about to close the door and turn her back on me after she said ‘reservation only’ (not even waiting for me to reply). She mentioned next reservation was only at 7pm and they have to wait for the customer. I even asked if we can eat quickly as it was only 6.20pm and the place was EMPTY. I told her again we will eat a quick one. She just said ‘reservation only’. She didn’t smile or look friendly. I was very upset. I love Japan very much but she created and left such a negative impact for me.

I had two experiences with Minato: I am local, live in Asahikawa. I have been there before. The first time I went with Japanese friends, and had a nice dinner. Just tried to make reservations for dinner again, and they told us they aren't accepting any foreigners, even though we haven't left the prefecture and we LIVE in Asahikawa. It doesn't matter how good the sushi is when they are racist.
Michael B — Google review
Do not welcome foreigners. The waitresses speak above average English, but turned their back away once we answered we don't speak Japanese. They keep questioning us how we could make a reservation without speaking Japanese (although I explained I can read menus and understand food items if they speak in Japanese), when we answered AE Concierge. They stopped questioning but still showing an irritated face. There are a la carte menu options, but when we made reservation they only let us pick the course menu with more expensive choices. There was a fly in the appetizer and we called them up to the private room to ask and they yelled at us instead. Super impolite, never experienced this in Japan. Super low level of services - no explanation in food serving, didn't take away finished plates, didn't help turning on air conditioner etc. Charging service charge amounting to 20000 JPY (5 people dining and the 8% service charge is about 20000 JPY!!!) but they leave us alone in the room without even turning on the A/C , nor they give us a glass of water or tea. Not even a simple thank you when we pay the bill and finished the meal. If you do not speak Japanese, you may want to consider not having a meal here. Utter terrible experience.
Christy W — Google review
[Do not welcome foreigners] I don't speak Japanese and made the reservation through AMEX agent. The two restaurant staff was being very impolite about us not speaking Japanese. Showed a waiter there's a little fly in the food, the waiter first denied about it and then rudely took the food away. It's one of the very few bad dining experience in Japan.
Terri W — Google review
Delicious omakase sushi with friendy staff. Please note very little English is spoken, but they try their best so you can get by with hand gestures and simple phrases. You also get a cue card of which fish you are being served, which is really helpful.

The sushi shop do not welcome foreigner , we tried to make reservation by phone in japanese it takes few minutes on hold until somebody replied and said that they dont take reservation (please just come and see whether any seat available) the next day we come to the shop but the shop staff said they only receive guest by reservation. Better go to other shop or sapporo city have a better selection.

Museums
The Asahikawa Science Museum, also known as Saipal, is a captivating science center located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. It offers an interactive and educational experience for visitors of all ages with its hands-on exhibits on natural sciences, technology, and astronomy. The museum features experiment rooms, experience rooms, a planetarium, and an observatory that allows guests to explore the Northern ecosystems and the universe.
A new experience! This was my first time going to Planetarium. The best to go when you well rested, so don't fall asleep under the stars. My friend said they change the movie every month. The staff is friendly too.

Visited on 1st November 2024. It’s a fun place to learn about science. It would take at least 2-3 hours to truly appreciate the exhibitions. Most of the exhibits have English translation and the exhibition staff were friendly and approachable too. There is an observatory on the rooftop. Unfortunately, it was cloudy that day and we were unable to use the telescope. The view of the city from up there was great though. The only downside was the show in the planetarium, it was passable and had little to do with astrophysics. Regret being stuck in there for 40 minutes. Other than that the museum itself is a good place to visit.

This is a Science Museum, relatively small (you can also tell that by the size of its gift shop). However, I did have a very good time for hours with my little girl. All science demonstrations here delivered Science knowledge to kids, as well as funs (most with English description). Several staffs spoke English to guide us, especially when my daughter played with the "low-gravity jumping" and "free-rotation seat". So as the "taking photos of your shadows", great toy even to me. Excellent place to visit in Asahikawa!! You may put it into your travel plan.
CS K — Google review
It's a very small museum. Shows are in Japanese language only, but most of the exhibit has some English instructions/information. We pop by to kill some time before heading to the airport. There is a zero gravity experience station where you can try to experience astronaut training. There is also a small earthquake simulator if you want to experience how it feels during an earthquake. The staff were very friendly, and they do try their best to explain the key concepts to we using body language + simple english.

Great little science centre to spend an hour or two with kids. The exhibits are excellent even though all is in Japanese. Staffs are very helpful and are able to communicate in English. Only JPY 500 per adult and JPY 300 per child. Absolutely the place you can spend a great time interacting with your kids - highly recommended.

It also features walking paths, playgrounds, and serves as an excellent vantage point for admiring Asahikawa's stunning night views.
Fabulous garden and forest space.
Nick W — Google review
Must be the largest park in Asahikawa, filled with plenty of cherry blossoms and many other trees & plants of all kinds. Although most of them was mere wild forest, and the routes were quite challenging too - more suitable for trekking than a walk. The Kamikawa Shrine inside is also an especially great one.
Quinn'z L — Google review
Wide & wild park literally. When walking in the park, I saw 3 wild foxes. 2 of them are too quick to catch (take photos, i mean). There are many birds, squirrels as well. You can also camp here, with your own equipment for free. Love it so much, especially in the summer
Yen N — Google review
There are many large free parking lots and lush trees. Lots of crows
Yun A — Google review
Very peaceful park with many big trees and a waterfall in the middle.
Polsant P — Google review
Big trees good to visit for 紅葉🍁
Janice G — Google review
There's a "hidden path" from the Shrine into the park. Nice dirt trails for jogging or walking. Yes, there are foxes (^-^) & feeding stations for the Ezo squirrels. Haven't seen it in summer, but I'm anticipating birds, butterflies, & many flowers. There's little moss covered areas for a picnic, & a playground I haven't visited. Conveniently located bathrooms, but bring hand sanitizer. Small pack of tissue paper wouldn't hurt either just in case. Seico Mart halfway up the hill across the street if you need refreshment. 上川神社Kamikawa Jinja is lovely year round, & we visited for hatsumode.
Lee B — Google review
Good place for a walk, jogging, ball games, and so more. You should take care of your children because threre is a river and ponds around the park.

Asahikawa City Museum

4.2

Museum
Asahikawa City Museum is a must-visit destination for those interested in delving into the history and culture of Hokkaido. The museum offers insights into the Ainu Indigenous people, showcasing their traditions and lifestyle. Additionally, visitors can explore exhibits on local industries like agriculture and forestry, as well as traditional Japanese practices such as tea ceremonies and calligraphy. Although English explanations are limited, the museum provides a rich and colorful learning experience about Hokkaido's heritage.
Highly recommended if you want to learn more about Ainu, the indigenous people of hokkaido. Well curated museum exhibiting the history and culture of Ainu. English captions are available via QR codes at various (though not all) exhibits, making this museum a great one compared to some other more popular museums we visited in Hokkaido, which only have pure japanese captions. On the lower floor, this are also exhibitions on the flora, bird, insect and animal specimens from the surroundings. The ticket price is well deserved!
Kate L — Google review
Small 2 story museum, was the only visitor on a Tuesday afternoon. Exhibits all in Japanese, had some electronic buttons which worked. Entry fee of 350 yen, probably will avoid next time
Jonathan — Google review
Good to know about history of Asahikawa and surrounding area history. If you have another museum ticket can use it for 10% discount. Almost empty visitors. Just 1 hours yo walk and read about it. 350 Yen per adult
Bee B — Google review
super insightful museum with two floors of detailed exhibitions. information is mostly in japanese but you can scan a qr code to get english translations, or just use google lens. covered everything from jomon era to modern era. highly recommended! you can purchase tickets at the counter.
Nadya M — Google review
Well maintained and beautifully structured museum. Good for 1-1:30 hr stop. No English description but can be QR scan / using translation for better understanding for the Ainu history.
Napat S — Google review
A good museum covering everything from Ainu culture and history across Hokkaido to how Hokkaido was “created” geologically with deep dives into tectonic plates etc, wildlife from fauna and flora as well as how life evolved from pre-historic to modern times. The museum is about 2 floors and can be done in about 1h if you do t ready every QR with English translation or about 2h+ if you do. It is about a 15min walk from the JR station and worth a visit
Sobren15 — Google review
The museum is not very big, but its very informative. Worth visiting to know more about the nature and the history of the region.
Alena B — Google review
I came here on a weekend in November and there were hardly any visitors. So it was as if I had the whole museum to myself. Haha. It is a relatively small museum compared to the museum in Sapporo. If you are fast, you can leave in less than an hour. This is not a standalone unlike others. This is formerly a snow crystal museum, but they converted it to a city museum. I wonder why. Since the event receives relatively few visitors, you can play in the snow outside without worrying about disturbing other people.

Santa Present Park is a beloved ski resort located just 15 minutes from Asahikawa city center, making it easily accessible for urban dwellers. The resort offers several courses for skiing and snowboarding, with the unique feature of night sessions available. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque night view while hitting the slopes. The Nicholas Observation Tower atop the mountain provides a romantic setting at 330 meters above sea level. Families will find options for all skill levels, from kids' escalator slopes to higher lifts.
Excellent ski resort for beginners/learners. Im a beginner snowboarder and had an amazing snowboard instructor. He was very kind and patient. Great for practising. Highly recommend. I've progressed more in the two days here that ever before. Very reasonably priced.

My family enjoy with this place. We can play skii at night. Good price! Snow quality is good.
Verachai S — Google review
Very good ski resort with very friendly employees. My first time ever snowboarding, and it was very fun! We tried the small free slope first and later snowboarded on a higher hill, which was a great experience!
Sigrid K — Google review
Very good for beginners and intermediate and inexpensive (retals are expensive though)
Cosmin R — Google review
Family friendly with a snow escalator for learning and very close to Asahikawa jr station by car. There is a free hill to learn and practice as well. This resort is not very big. There's a small cafe, big rest area, and ski school. We paid about 5000 yen for a full adult rental package (goggles, helmet, pants, jacket, shoes, and board), and 3000 for child set (no jacket and pants) for 2 hours. 5 hours would be 500 yen more and you can add it on if you stay longer. It's the same price. We paid 2150 yen for a half day ticket. Night time ticket from 4 - 9pm is extra. Also, the bunny hill escalator is 1300 yen and not included with the regular lift ticket. We just went with the regular halfday lift ticket and learned on the regular slope. Staff is very friendly with some English speakers.

Amazing place I like to ski at. Some days magical some times also not many people it’s wonderful and the view is amazing!! Hidden Gem.
Victor A — Google review
Great place for the family. From the kids escalator slope to the highest ski lift there is something for everyone. Snow quality is generally good Ski instructors were really kind and my kid enjoyed his lessons. The restaurant is standard fare but it is good but not much for vegetarians, as usual

Nearby Asahikawa They have Season Passes also for those are into Skiing Has Snowscooter, Ski, and Snowboards too. For gears, entrance and lifts, there’s a separate fee for that and it is a bit pricey.

The cozy ambiance and warm hospitality make it a must-visit destination in the neighborhood.

I came here after visiting the nearby park. It was great to be able to sit down on the second floor with a hot coffee from the vending machine. You could buy souvenir pastries goods and then came up second floor to eat. Staff were very nice and friendly. Also reminded me about the expiration date of what I have bought. There’s also a branch store at the asahikawa station.

MOS BURGER Aeon Mall Asahikawa Station Shop is a nice and clean store located inside a mall, offering delicious and well-balanced burgers like the Chicken Teriyaki Burger and Cheeseburger. The staff is supportive and helpful, despite being slow to react to questions about coupons. The shop provides free WiFi and is open from 8am to 9pm, making it a convenient spot for grabbing coffee, having a quick lunch, or meeting up with friends.

I love Mos Burger. The only problem left is what to choose. I usually go for rice bun but today I tried mentako sauce chicken burger with salad and hot coffee. They were delicious as always. This store is located inside the first floor of aeon mall which is close to JR Asahikawa station. It was crowded in the Saturday afternoon with mainly local people. But I still managed to get a seat.

At 独酌 三四郎, you'll want to sample a wide array of menu items, as each one is a delight in its own right. The yaki-tori (chicken) stands out as an absolute must-try, delivering an unparalleled culinary experience. Whether you prefer your sake hot or cold, the selection here is sure to impress.
Order almost every items on the menu. The yaki-tori (chicken) is the best in my life and is a must-order. The sake including hot one is great. The staffs are friendly and cute. The aura in this place is so warm and Japanish. Please have a visit here.

The best Izakaya in my life. I’d say this is fine dining izakaya. Every dish we ordered was amazing. I love their nihonshu collection, carefully curated by the owner. I’d love to visit Hokkaido again just to visit here. Thank you so much for everything.
Hyun C — Google review
The customer service of this restaurant was not bad, but the price of some items were too expensive. The fried eel was delicious and not too expensive, however, the other food we ordered were very surprised, but still a bit expensive. We didn’t order the cured bean, but somehow it was default given to us as the appetizer. Also, a bowl of bean costed 500 yen. Anyway, I don’t think it is not a really looking forward option for dinner.
Wade C — Google review
Best of best Izakaya. Cannot comapare with others in every perspectives. Reservation is a must. I hope I have another chance to visit here in rest of my life.
Hannah C — Google review
Came here only because of famous TV show, but was not able to get inside. It looked like the owner said NO to us when they realized that we were foreigners. They didn't specifically say that, but they told me that all the seats that were empty or getting free from people finish eating, were suddenly reserved for other people. Since we arrived here at around 20:40, and the shop closes at around 23:00, we kindly asked if we could wait for a table to be free, or we were even willing to sit separately, since we were a group of 4 people, but they said NO and we couldn't even wait for a table. Sadly, I saw with my own eyes that 2 groups of 2 people, total 4 Japanese locals entering the restaurant without reservation, while we got kicked out. (The Japanese people who got inside while we were asked to leave, specifically asked in Japanese, if there were seats in the restaurant, and the owner said come in to those people). Even if what the owner said was true, the way they delivered was not nice and promising at all. Don't recommend this place for foreigners or tourist, the owner or the staff probably won't want you guys too.
하얀구름 — Google review
Good tasting food but a very limited menu. No salad options for example. Also small portions and overpriced for what you get. A lot of better ‘izakaya’ options in Asahikawa with a broader menu at more reasonable prices.

Very nice people and a great atmosphere. The food was pretty uninspiring, despite the reviews.
