Asahiyama Zoo is a modern zoo featuring reptiles, marine mammals, and a famous daily penguin parade. It's part of a comprehensive travel plan that includes other attractions like the hills of Biei, the Blue Pond, and flower fields at Farm Tomita in Furano. The zoo offers an exciting experience with various animal exhibits and the highlight being the entertaining penguin parade. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Biei Patchwork Road and Blue Pond for stunning natural scenery.
A well-designed zoo, easy to reach and worth the visit. The animal enclosures are creatively built to let you observe the animals up close, especially the penguin and seals viewing via underwater glass tunnel. Sections are educational and family-friendly. The zoo is clean, well-maintained, and staff are helpful. Great for both kids and adults looking to experience wildlife in such a unique setting.
Peng C — Google review
Reasonably sized, clean, well laid out zoo. You can spend anywhere from an hour to a few here depending on whether you stop to see everything. They've got a good variety of animals, especially those for cold climate such as polar bears, seals and penguins. There are also kids areas for interacting with small animals. There are feeding sessions to watch as well, though you'll generally want to come in the morning for those as most are finished by early afternoon.
Bent Z — Google review
Love this zoo. It is built on a hill slope. Animals are well kept and clean. Great place for children and adult alike. We entered by the East Gate which is at the top of the hill and stroll slowly downhill. When getting back to the East Gate, there is a bus stop mid point of zoo where you can catch a shuttle bus back to the top if you are tired. Inexpensive entry fees and worth your 3 to 4 hours spent there.. enjoy!
Jonathan L — Google review
Absolutely great place to visit on our last day drive out to Sapporo. Though it was little hotter on the day of visit and we got sun burn but worth it. Good light also gave us an opportunity to click better pics. I found penguin in the open space were very good for photography and interaction. Loved the big wolf, healthy lions, cheetah, bear, and many more species plus birds. Good place to go though the car parking could be a challenge but not that bad as Furano farm. Here jt is well managed.
Ravish M — Google review
Went on a day that snowed in autumn (end of October!). Loved seeing the penguins, polar bears, and other animals. It would be great to explore it when there is no snow though so I dont have to worry about slipping but I heard it's really popular in winter because of the penguin walk.
Celeste V — Google review
Visiting Asahiyama Zoo in the snow is a truly special experience. The entire zoo becomes calm and quiet under a blanket of white, and the winter scenery makes the walk feel like wandering through a peaceful forest. The snowy landscape adds a magical atmosphere that you won’t find in most zoos. The animals are wonderful to see, especially in their natural cold climate. The seals are playful and curious, gliding through the water with such ease. Watching them up close is fascinating, and seeing the keeper feed them in the snow is a lovely moment. The penguins are charming as well—standing together, hopping around, or swimming gracefully underwater. They seem completely at home in the winter air. The polar bear and brown bear are impressive and powerful, especially against the snowy backdrop. The wolves curled up in the snow look gentle and peaceful, and the red panda resting high above its branches is adorably calm. Even the owl, with its sharp eyes and beautiful feathers, feels like part of the winter scenery. The pathways are well maintained despite the snow, and there are indoor viewing areas to warm up before heading back outside. The zoo is thoughtfully designed so visitors can observe each animal closely without disturbing them. A quiet, beautiful winter outing with unforgettable moments. Highly recommended, especially in the snow — Asahiyama Zoo feels like Hokkaido at its best. Travelling from Sapporo Eki-mae to Asahikawa Eki-mae by highway bus is very straightforward. A round-trip ticket costs 4,700 yen, while a single ticket is 2,500 yen. Tickets must be purchased at the station counter or the ticket machine—IC cards are not accepted for this route. Once you arrive at Asahikawa Station (Eki-mae), you can also buy a discounted return ticket for only 1,000 yen, which makes the journey very affordable. The buses are comfortable, warm, and punctual. A simple, reliable, and good-value way to travel between Sapporo and Asahikawa.
Snail H — Google review
I visited this zoo in July 2025. The weather was quite hot, around 30°C. If you arrive in the afternoon, there’s usually no need to wait in line for tickets. The entrance fee for adults is 1,000 yen. The zoo itself isn’t very large, but it houses a wide variety of animals. What impressed me the most was that, in addition to viewing animals from outside their enclosures, there are indoor walkways where you can see some animals up close, separated only by glass. Some animals, like the bears, appeared a bit thin and old, while others like the tigers and lions looked healthy and typical for a zoo. Compared to other zoos, the highlight here is definitely the opportunity to observe the animals more closely than in most places.
Peerasit T — Google review
Well run, clean zoo. Animals look healthy and have spaces to wander. It’s free for kids and ¥1000 for adults. For food East Gate has a large restaurant with tables both indoors and outdoors (shaded) and a view. Close to West Gate there is a small kiosk that you can buy food and sit at outdoor tables that has parasols for shade. You can easily spend half-a-day here. There is also a short shuttle bus that take visitors from the spider monkey enclosure up to East Gate (useful if you don’t want to climb the steps).

Asahikawa Ramen Village, located in the eastern part of Asahikawa near Minami-Nagayama Station, is a haven for ramen enthusiasts. This village houses branches of eight of the city's best ramen restaurants, each offering its own unique take on the beloved dish. From classic choices like Aoba to those with a stronger fish flavor like Ittetsu-an Matsuda, visitors can sample a variety of styles and flavors all in one place.
Such a cool little village of local Ramen shops, with 8 different brands in one location you get to pick and choose whatever your heart tells you! SUBSCRIBE to Junk Food Japan YouTube channel to see how good it really is!

I ate in one of their stores... It was just not bad.. personally for me, I have tried other stores in the vicinity that also taste better than here. It is a nice visit to see the village and there is surrounding clothes store and grocery shopping around here.
Andrew E — Google review
I really wanted to like what was available, I picked the store with the longest line. The miso ramen was unremarkable, more Garlicky and mildly spicy than having a strong miso flavour. The soup was oily rather than well emulsified. Points for being generous but it was not worth the calories.
Elliot T — Google review
When I first arrived, I was a bit surprised — I had imagined the place to be much bigger. It turned out to be just one building with several ramen shops inside. But honestly, it was really cute! We went into one of the ramen places — it even has a Michelin star! The food was amazing; having a bowl of hot ramen on a cold day was just perfect. After that, we stopped by the restroom, and right nearby there was a cozy café. We grabbed some Hokkaido milk coffee — it wasn’t expensive, and the staff were super friendly. The restroom was clean too, and there was even a small photo spot to take pictures. Around the Ramen Village, there were lots of shops to explore, so we ended up spending quite a bit of time there. I’d say it’s totally worth a visit — good food, nice vibes, and a bit of shopping all in one place. ☕🍥🛍️

A small little area which houses around 10 or so ramen restaurants. Id suggest you walk around and see which one attracts you the most. We went for the Tenkin ramen which specialises in shoyu style butter ramen. Absolutely delicious broth. Quite flavourful and salty too.
SL W — Google review
Fun little ramen place but you can also get similar ones in town. A good trip if you went to the sake museum before (or after) as it’s in the same part of town. The ramen wasn’t particularly better or more unique to others you can find close to the station.
Sobren15 — Google review
One tummy one meal. Only managed to try one Ramen shop there. That shop is meant to be highest google review ratings based on restaurants in the village. Abit of research indicated that Asahikawa is famous for their shoyu based broth. Disappointingly, the ramen taste was abit underwhelming. A well known place with a name called Ramen village should have ramen with exceptionally standing out characteristics and quality. I found the ramen pretty standard.
Alfred W — Google review
In Ramen Village, numerous ramen restaurants beckon, but during lunch, most were fully occupied. Fortunately, we secured a table at one of them. The taste was average, not compelling enough to justify a journey solely for ramen.

Specialty Museums
The Otokoyama Sake Brewing Museum, a former brewhouse-turned-museum, is a must-visit for sake lovers. It offers exhibits on traditional sake-making methods and provides the opportunity to taste different varieties of this popular Japanese beverage. Located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, the museum provides an immersive experience into the world of sake production and allows visitors to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship behind this iconic drink.
The museum is free of charge and more of a self-guided type of museum. On the second floor you can see inside the sake making facility, and they show how famous the sake is worldwide. On the third floor you can watch an explanatory video (in many different languages), explaining the sake making process. They also showcase the traditional tools needed to make sake. The real highlight was the sake tasting station though. Each person gets 3 free coins to try their mid range sake. If you want to try their most famous ones, you pay 200¥ per sake you want to try (3 different ones are available). We also tried their sake ice cream and sake kasu chocolate, both incredibly flavourful ! It is recommended to come by bus or by taxi since you shouldn’t drive after the tasting. The bus stop is right across the museum.
Judith K — Google review
A small museum but we do can learn the whole process of making sake. A 200 Yan sake tasting gave nice experiences. No charges for the factory tour also self guided. At the testing room you deposit your coin and push a bottom for sale to dispense! Many old and traditional tools are on display to show how the sake were made during the past which was very neat!

When my wife and I researched places of interest around Furano, we came across Asahikawa, a city located about 56 km (1 hour 5 mins drive by car) north of Furano. Otokoyama Sake Brewing Museum & Park in Asahikawa was a special interest as we enjoy sake. From our hotel in Furano, the drive to Otokoyama Sake was scenic and enjoyable. The museum showcases the history of Otokoyama and chronicling its historical brewing artifacts, brewing processes, collection of regional and international sake awards, etc. An audio-visual TV presentation is available in different languages, including English, and we found this very interesting. From the museum, visitors can view through glass panels into the sake production plant. Entry to the museum is free-of-charge. In a separate building is the sake retail shop where sake tasting and soft-serve ice cream can also be enjoyed. As I was driving, I did not participate in the sake tasting. My wife did and she enjoyed the sake samples. There is a wide selection of sakes for sale at different price points. We purchased Otokoyama's top award-winning Naturally Pure Junmai Daiginjo, Yukimizuki Junmai Daiginjo, and Fukko Sake. We observed an interesting activity by locals who brought large plastic containers to fill up with mineral water which was dispensed free-of-charge from taps. The mineral-rich water is drawn from underground wells for sake production, and the water sources are the very reasons for Otokoyama's location. Of course, we emptied our small drinking bottles and refilled them with the mineral water!
Jeff L — Google review
I really appreciate their free-entry museum. On the top level of museum, I could learn every single stages of sake making. It’s so well curated and easy to understand. It’s foreigner freindly setting which offer presentations in a few different languages. I enjoyed both free and paid sake tastings. Loved everything.
Hannah C — Google review
As we head up NorthEast, we stopped by the sake museum. This sake is almost around the world. It's not a huge place but it does display how they make sake and sell it around the world. There's also an area where you can get free water! There's also a slide for kids! There's a shop where you can purchase some sake and taste them. They have a sticker for drivers so they know who's driving and not let them drink. Nice place to stop by if you're leaving Asahikawa. There's also shopping across the street
Duncan C — Google review
The museum is a must-go for Japanese sake fans. You can explore 2 floors worth of history and events of their most famous sake, as well as watch a short film on the 3rd floor. It's all free admission and photography is permitted. it wasn't busy when we visited on a Sunday afternoon too. The tasting and shop moved to a new location next Dorr but it isn't too far of a walk. Overall, it's worth the 10-15 minutes of exploring!
E T — Google review
350 year old award winning sake brand. They use snow filtered water from Mount Daisetsu. Pretty nice but smallish museum. The store outside has the tastings area. Tried a 7000円 sake for 200円、it was tasty. There is also a cafe. I tried the rice latte 450円 and it was very delicious, tasted like sake😂. Overall a pretty cool experience. Easy to take the bus here from Asahikawa station, use the Japan Travel app for routes, when you get on the bus take a ticket. Note the buses only take coins so have exact change.
David T — Google review
The Museum closes at 5pm and the cafeteria closes at 4:30pm. So plan ahead and enjoy the tour in the 1st floor. Really interesting to know some history. The cafeteria has a lot of options to buy from. I bought the animal can sake, which was a very good to take as a gift. Try the sake tasting as well.

Ueno Farm, also known as The Gnomes' Garden, is a charming farm and plant nursery in Nagayama, Asahikawa. Established in 1989, the farm has evolved into a picturesque English-style garden with cobbled paths, ponds, and seasonal flower displays. Visitors can explore over 2,000 types of flowering plants across the 1.3-hectare site from spring to autumn.
very interesting place to visit with a nice little shop with many wares to browse. the flowers are very pretty and there’s a good variety of species and colours. the mountain hike (optional) was unexpected but fun and manageable.
Nadya M — Google review
A little out of the way if you’re taking public transport. Took me about 20minutes to walk from the nearest train station. The Gardens are really well maintained with various flower souvenirs you can get from the gift shop. There is also a hill for you to hike up to. It is rather steep, so wear grippy shoes. I completed the garden in about an hour.
Vern — Google review
1000 yen entrance fee for a really lovely stroll in a large garden. The top of the hill has a swing and it was so cute finding gnomes hidden everywhere! Such a good photo spot. It felt pretty magical.
Sket D — Google review
I visited Ueno Farm’s Gnomes Garden in July and paid a ¥1,000 entrance fee - worth every yen. The gardens are styled like an English cottage garden, but with a uniquely Japanese sense of harmony and care. Winding paths, blooming flowers, and whimsical touches create a storybook atmosphere. The entire grounds are just beautiful - lush, peaceful, and full of character. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe deeply, and feel completely transported. A must-visit for garden lovers and anyone looking for a serene escape in Hokkaido.
Annie S — Google review
Highly recommend to visit this beautiful garden. After painting the entry fee, you find yourself in a stunning well maintained garden. Then the path takes you to a more wild and steep part. Then it goes back to the well maintained area again. There are lots of pretty installations for photo opportunity. My daughter enjoyed looking for gnomes and a prize at the end was a highlight for her.
Helena S — Google review
1000 yen is too expensive for what it is. Only the garden area around the entrance is kinda nice and show some maintenances, but after that it was just weeds. I went there at the end of August, some flowers were dying.
Kate C — Google review
Lovely place that had a whimsical feel rather than the heavily curated/industrial look of typical flower farms. There were flowers everywhere and we had fun exploring the area. The rainbow chairs and swing sets at the top of the hill make for very nice photo ops, and the view from there was amazing. Recommended to wear covered and comfortable shoes for the walk up and down from there. There was a nice cafe with desserts and drinks, and free WiFi. Free parking right outside the park, and paid entry into the park.
Kia N — Google review
A beautiful and peaceful garden, not only filled with stunning flowers but also offering fun for kids with a gnome-hunting activity. In the end, the adults (me) were more enthusiastic than the kids, trying to find as many gnomes as possible 😆. Despite visiting on a Saturday, it felt much less touristy compared to the famous flower fields in Furano, with a calm and relaxing atmosphere that’s different from the usual garden experience. There’s a wide variety of interesting plants and flowers to enjoy. It was quite hot that day, and I got tanned a lot after the visit, but it was totally worth it, just make sure to apply sun protection. The food from the café was delicious as well. Highly recommended.

The Snow Crystal Museum in Asahikawa, Hokkaido is a charming and compact museum that celebrates the beauty of snowflakes. The museum's architecture resembles a snowflake itself, with white walls and ice columns creating an enchanting atmosphere. Inside, visitors can explore displays of ice crystal images and artistic exhibits showcasing the delicate structure of snowflakes. The European-style castle design adds to the magical ambiance, making it feel like something out of a fairy tale or movie like Frozen.
Great place to visit with pretty frosted glass designs. Very photogenic place and romantic for couples. Family with children will be able to link it to fairy tale castles.
Wee C — Google review
The ticket for one adult is 700 yens. In my opinion, it's not worth it. There isn't too much to see. Yes, it's pretty and has some cool ice inside, but that's it, there isn't too much else to see. A shop, an event room, a video library, which is everything in Japanese. It has a restaurant inside, but you can access to it from outside the museum. The money doesn't worth the visit.
Mariano M — Google review
Exquisite place with elegant snow design everywhere and stunning halls! There are only some designated rooms so to be honest it's all more like a feast to eyes than an interesting experience. And despite the map it's still hard to make the way since all rooms are connected and there are two floors, making it harder to find directions. The restaurant only offers like 5 lunch sets but it's well-prepared and worthy, about ¥1200-1500 for a lunch set with a main dish, salad/bread, soup and dessert, or ¥500-800 for dessert only. Even the dishes are inspired by the signature snow design!
Quinn'z L — Google review
I'd call it more of an event hall, with a small element of "museum". There's plaques in Japanese, English, and Chinese, so you can learn all about the formation, crystallization, and science of snowflakes in three languages. If you like sparkly things, there's plenty of that to entertain the eyes. If you're also the sort who likes to get dressed up like a pretty princess, they also have a photo package and rental service. Just call ahead to make a reservation though.
Jenny B — Google review
Best if you could understand Japanese. Entrance fee: ¥700 for adults (¥650 if you log on to their website and find the discount coupon) ¥500 for University Students (student card is required) ¥550? A little cheaper for high school students or below. There’s a bridal service too. And if you’re a cosplayer, it would be suitable for photoshoot.
Shu Y — Google review
A romantic scenic spot. The 'museum' displays quite a number of 'snow'-like exhibits. With the crystal lamps, this place is decorated as a castle in Frozen. There is also a hall for wedding or music performance, with more than 140 seats. The time spent in this place is around 30 to at most 45 minutes.

Tokiwa Park, situated in the heart of Asahikawa, is the city's first public park and a serene oasis. The spacious grounds feature two large ponds where graceful swans glide amidst cherry blossoms in summer and vibrant foliage in autumn. Throughout the year, visitors can revel in the beauty of various flowers such as tulips, marigolds, and scarlet sage.
Tokiwa Park (常磐公園) is a serene urban oasis in central Asahikawa, celebrated as the city’s first public park and recognized among Japan’s top 100 city parks. Established in 1910 and spanning about 16 hectares along the Ishikari River, it offers a harmonious blend of lush greenery, tranquil ponds, and cultural facilities. The park features two elegant ponds—“Chidoriga-ike” (Plover Pond) and “Hakucho-ike” (Swan Pond)—where visitors can enjoy boating, spot birds, and marvel at seasonal reflections of cherry blossoms and autumn foliage. Its tree canopy, populated by willows, poplars, poppies, and stewartia, changes character with each season—cherry blossoms in spring, tranquil lotus blooms in summer, fiery reds in autumn, and sparkling snow lanterns in winter. Cultural touches abound with outdoor sculptures (Asahikawa is known as the “City of Sculpture”) and on-site facilities including the Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art and Asahikawa Central Library. The park also hosts vibrant local events like the “Tabe Marche” food fair in September, fireworks in summer, and snow lanterns during the Asahikawa Winter Festival. It's easily reached—a short bus ride from Asahikawa Station—making it a convenient retreat for both locals and visitors. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful stroll under blooming sakura, a paddle across a mirror-like pond, an art-filled afternoon, or seasonal festivities, Tokiwa Park offers a diverse and enriching experience that reflects the changing moods of Hokkaido.

This is the must visit park which is closed to many high rate hotel such as Marriott Sapporo, InterContinental, JAL, etc., and right at the Nakajima Station. This park has A big pond with many old Ginko trees

This was the first stop for my partner and I on our one night stay in Asahikawa. It is a short 25 minutes walk from the JR station and is certainly well worth it! Perhaps it was an off-peak season, but we were essentially the only ones in the whole park and we could enjoy the time strolling around leisurely which was very romantic. We came across a shrine with a cute crossing bridge, a lovely pond where you can rent small boats to paddle on and big open spaces where we saw beautiful tulips! There seems to be fairly easy and accessible parking available, as well as very clean bathrooms located around the park. Definitely a must-go if you are in Asahikawa for a stroll or to sit by the pond and unwind :)

Asahikawa City Museum is a must-visit destination for those interested in delving into the history and culture of Hokkaido. The museum offers insights into the Ainu Indigenous people, showcasing their traditions and lifestyle. Additionally, visitors can explore exhibits on local industries like agriculture and forestry, as well as traditional Japanese practices such as tea ceremonies and calligraphy. Although English explanations are limited, the museum provides a rich and colorful learning experience about Hokkaido's heritage.
Highly recommended if you want to learn more about Ainu, the indigenous people of hokkaido. Well curated museum exhibiting the history and culture of Ainu. English captions are available via QR codes at various (though not all) exhibits, making this museum a great one compared to some other more popular museums we visited in Hokkaido, which only have pure japanese captions. On the lower floor, this are also exhibitions on the flora, bird, insect and animal specimens from the surroundings. The ticket price is well deserved!

Small 2 story museum, was the only visitor on a Tuesday afternoon. Exhibits all in Japanese, had some electronic buttons which worked. Entry fee of 350 yen, probably will avoid next time

Good to know about history of Asahikawa and surrounding area history. If you have another museum ticket can use it for 10% discount. Almost empty visitors. Just 1 hours yo walk and read about it. 350 Yen per adult

super insightful museum with two floors of detailed exhibitions. information is mostly in japanese but you can scan a qr code to get english translations, or just use google lens. covered everything from jomon era to modern era. highly recommended! you can purchase tickets at the counter.

Well maintained and beautifully structured museum. Good for 1-1:30 hr stop. No English description but can be QR scan / using translation for better understanding for the Ainu history.

A good museum covering everything from Ainu culture and history across Hokkaido to how Hokkaido was “created” geologically with deep dives into tectonic plates etc, wildlife from fauna and flora as well as how life evolved from pre-historic to modern times. The museum is about 2 floors and can be done in about 1h if you do t ready every QR with English translation or about 2h+ if you do. It is about a 15min walk from the JR station and worth a visit

The museum is not very big, but its very informative. Worth visiting to know more about the nature and the history of the region.

I came here on a weekend in November and there were hardly any visitors. So it was as if I had the whole museum to myself. Haha. It is a relatively small museum compared to the museum in Sapporo. If you are fast, you can leave in less than an hour. This is not a standalone unlike others. This is formerly a snow crystal museum, but they converted it to a city museum. I wonder why. Since the event receives relatively few visitors, you can play in the snow outside without worrying about disturbing other people.

The Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Memorial Museum, established in 1916, is a significant site for preserving the history and culture of the Ainu people in Hokkaido. The museum, built in traditional Ainu style and run by actual Ainu individuals, offers English-friendly exhibits showcasing tools from daily life and valuable materials from the Asahikawa area. Visitors can also participate in programs such as folk music performances, classical dance experiences, and embroidery workshops.
I can't recommend this place enough if you're genuinely interested in learning about the Ainu *through* the Ainu themselves. A small family museum with a highly personal history, shared through some of the most beautiful storytelling I've read while traveling Hokkaido. The pieces and exhibits are beautiful for sure, but take the time to read and truly take in all the descriptions of life, history and culture and you'll be glad you took the trip - whatever else you're in Asahikawa for.

Definitely a must-visit for anyone interested in Ainu history. This is not just a museum – it’s a whole encyclopedia. You’ll find traditional clothing, patterns, household tools, and even exhibits about the Ainu language. I also want to highlight the gift shop: here you can support contemporary Ainu crafts by purchasing something to remember your visit. Highly recommended!
Artem K — Google review
Less advertised on websites talking about places to visit in Asahikawa but a definite recommendation! It is run by Ainu descendants themselves from a generational hand down since the original founder in the late 1800s to foster understanding of the Ainu culture. It was very interesting. They also hand out a mini book worth of information in pamphlet form covering everything from history to religion, dance, clothing and more. If you have to choose between this and the Asahikawa city museum due to time, just would choose this museum.
Sobren15 — Google review
A memorial to Kawamura Kaneto, who fought to keep Ainu culture alive in the region and who later funded the museum. It is not very large but its unassuming nature and tight range of artefacts, photos, and Ainu crafts make it an important destination for anyone visiting the city. There is a store selling some handmade curios on site as well and the proceeds contribute to the community upkeep.
B N — Google review
You can learn something about Ainu culture. Definitely recommend going there because it seems privately owned and gives a different view on this sensitive topic between japanese and Ainu culture. Entrance fee is a bit high (800yen).

Really Interesting. We learned a lot about the Ainu people and their struggles. It is so important to learn about such history. We'll treasure the little carved bear we bought at the Ainu village at Akanko more.
Mars B — Google review
A great exhibition of Asahikawa's Ainu Heritage. It's all combined inside a whole house that was built under imitation of an authentic Ainu house. There were carved wooden sculptures, embroidered clothes, Ainu hunting and daily tools, animal models and so on. The guide wasn't so supportive so the only information I could get was from some printed glossaries and automatic video. The museum also offers Ainu and Asappy souvenirs, as well as Ainu clothes for visitors to try on (with fees charged).

Asahikawa Station is a bustling hub for travelers, offering easy access to the Heiwa Shopping Street and various attractions. The station serves as a convenient starting point for visiting popular destinations such as Asahiyama Zoo, Kawamura Kaneto Ainu Kinenkan, Otokoyama Sake Brewery, and Ramen Village.
Lovely and beautiful train station especially in winter where the track covered by snow. Not a busy station and beutiful interior design. The bus terminal is just outside the train station and people here are friendly and nice. A grandma who cant speak english even try help and lead us into correct queue line for bus.

The aesthetics of this station is just fantastic. It's wood-themed interior and the art displays inside makes it look like a museum of sorts. If you are going around Hokkaido, Asahikawa Station is conveniently located in the heart of the prefecture hence it is where you should stay if you want to explore Hokkaido's natural beauty. This station is literally at the heart of Hokkaido.

Very clean. Simple layout. They also have a Tourist Info Center, bike rentals, souvenir shop, lockers, and vending machines. You can get the bus schedules in Tourist info center. Either you talk to the staff or get one of their flyers with the bus schedule (in English) Connected to the adjacent AEON Mall.

Asahikawa is a nice regional hub, with connections to Sapporo, Wakkanai, Furano and Kitami. It's a huge station with many restaurants and shops. It was all really nicely decorated for the Christmas season. Really beautiful with all the snow too, although they don't seem to be shoveling a path through the snow
Ruddy D — Google review
I rated this 5 stars because this is, in my opinion, the most beautiful station (in terms of interior design) I've ever been in Japan. The warm and minimalist aesthetics of its modern hallways adorned by the wooden walls give it more of a museum vibe than a station. Students stay in the evening hours to study at station hallways, enjoying the relaxed and calm atmosphere. Commuters perhaps give respect to the superb architectural space by behaving in a quiet subdued manner. The elegant finish extend even at the square fronting the station and mall. The wide, unobstructed vista of the square complements the aesthetics of the station's interiors.
Ito R — Google review
It's a massive station. I had to ask for assistance at various points. But when I go back, I'll get used to it.

One of the most memorable JR stations I have been to from an architectural perspective. Visited during summer 2019. The station was designed by Naito Architect & Associates. Heiwa Dōri Shopping Street is a vibrant pedestrian haven nestled in the heart of Asahikawa, Japan. This iconic walkway, adorned with captivating outdoor sculptures, has transformed from its origins as Shidan Street into the city's largest shopping district. A true hub of activity, Heiwa Dōri not only offers an array of shops and restaurants but also serves as the focal point for major local events like the Asahikawa Winter Festival and the World Ice Sculpture Contest.
Most of the shops were closed after 6pm, except some food stalls. There were some containers set up for food and desserts, and there was music playing at the centre of it. Chanced upon this shop that sells delicious dessert. I thought it was mochi but online search revealed that it might be a Ohagi. I tried their special sesame and a red bean dessert. Will love to try their chestnut and sakura one day, as it was already sold out. You can choose to dine in or take away.

Absolute ghost town, most of the shops were either closed or permanently abandoned. A couple were open but nothing much really. Just a long strip of nothing. A quiet place to stroll around if that’s what you’re looking for.

Asahikawa Heiwa-dori is a shopping street in Hokkaido, Japan. Opened in 1972, Heiwa-doti Kaimono Koen is Japan's first permanent pedestrian-only street. It extends around 1 km to the north near Asahikawa Station, with various unique shops, sculptures and trees. It's a shame, when I visited it was quiet and almost all the shops were closed.
Setiawaty L — Google review
Most of the shops were closed and hours of operation on Google are not accurate. It's an eclectic collection of mismatch shops. It's a little more lively at night but remember to read reviews and avoid shattered expectations.
Erica W — Google review
We spent ¥500 parking fee to stroll on this street only to spend 10mins walking aimlessly about as it was a ghost street. Almost all the shops were shuttered at 1pm+ and remained the same when we went back to check at 7pm+. This was on a Monday. Luckily we found a great alternative place to spend our afternoon which was MegaCentreTRIAL discount megastore. All the things there were waaaaay cheaper than other supermarkets.

Kamui Ski Links is a charming ski center located on the slopes of Mt. Kamui in northern Hokkaido, known for its high-quality powder snow and extensive trails suitable for all levels and ages.
Large ski slope with even a long 4km beginner course from the top if you take the Gondola up. It wasn't crowded when I visited in late December. Quite a few ski lifts are available from the bottom and so the queue doesn't get long and the whole place just feels more relaxing as it's not so crowded. There are also racks in the restaurant on the 2nd floor to put your bags and the food there is reasonably good. Don't forget to try the yummy ice cream there too. You can book your rental and ticket in advance by scanning a QR code. It is really convenient that you can store your rental equipment in the shop if you're renting multiple days. I would love to come back to this slope again if there's a chance.

A decent ski resort with a few challenging courses, multiple offpiste and tree runs. It is convenient to access in less than 1h drive from Asahikawa. Main downside is the limited distance for each ski run.
Alain R — Google review
Nice ski resort with a couple of different areas and plenty of lifts. Not many people and no queuing, it closes early though. Rental was okay.
Steffen — Google review
Recently enjoyed a lovely day of skiing and riding with a friend at Kamui Ski Links north of Sapporo. Kamui is a chill (mellow) Hokkaido resort with a 4-person gondola that whisks you to the summit in about 10 minutes. There are several chair lifts, including old school fixed grip lifts with jazz music playing from bullhorn-style speakers on one lift. I don’t love amplified music in such a lovely setting, even though I’m a jazz fan. Several gates offer access to side-country and backcountry runs that would best be enjoyed with a guide and full avalanche kits. The snow was excellent, fun tree skiing and fine views from the summit lodge (which closes early for food and beverage service, but you can access to warm up and use vending machines). The base lodge has a complete offering of hearty Japanese lunches, ordered via kiosk and then picked up at counter. Modest onsite sport shop offers rentals and a few merch items, though limited selection. The staff and service teams were friendly and efficient. We rented a car for the day trip to Kamui and another nearby resort the next day, though apparently there are ski buses from Asahikawa. Great spot for families and getting away from the gaijin mob scene that is Niseko. I look forward to my next visit with family in seasons to come.
Nelson J — Google review
Awesome authentic Japanese ski resort. Mountain is not too big but you’ll get variety of terrain with fast moving lifts for a very reasonable day ticket price. I personally found experience to be way better than Furano.
Karolis K — Google review
What a great ski resort! The courses are very huge and it provides variety of courses. The quality of snow is worth visiting. As Asahikawa locates in the internal part of Hokkaido, its cold climate provides one of the highest quality of snow not only in Hokkaido but also all around the world. The most favorable aspect is that this resort has beautiful spectacles. Views from the top of mountain is out of description. As is often the case with ski resorts in Hokkaido, foods are great. Buses from the center of Asahikawa city is available. Happiness depends on if you visit Kamui Ski Links...
Shota Y — Google review
After skiing in Niseko, Rusutsu, the 3 club meds, Furano. I find this is the best hidden gem among all the ski fields in Hokkaido. Ever since covid, all the resorts in Hokkaido had jacked up their prices. Rusutsu day pass now is over 10000 yen. Not only the lift tickets has raised its price, but also the price of resort food courts. A 30% increase to around 100% is not all that uncommon for a normal ramen or a curry rice. We went to Kamui on 2 separate days, we head to lunch at 12 and we didn’t have to wait for a table. You can still find a 900 yen ramen and a few simple items under 1000 yen. The pizza pasta place on top of the gondola is even emptier, maybe due to its relatively pricy menus. Kamui is a medium size mountain in Japan’s standard. It’s a bit north, so it’s colder and has the same great Hokkaido snow more similar to Furano. The mountain is not super high but it’s very wide. There are multiple green routes you can come down on the main side of Kamui. There are many options for beginners to practice on their own accords. Then there is the backside mountain, a mountain with only reds and blacks. With most tree area considered as in bound, it’s a huge playground for those who wants to challenge themselves. And it’s quiet, I found untouched snow area 2 days after a dump. And best of all, it’s not windy. Lift pass for a family of 4(2A and 2 kids), is around 12000yen, a day pass for Rusutsu/Niseko is roughly 10000 yen. The resort itself doesn’t have any ski in ski out hotel. If you want to stay around the area it’s probably best to stay in Asahikawa, which is a big city. We stayed in Furano and drove 1 hour each way. The drive itself was quite nice, we went thru a few towns and there were many convenient stores on the way for snacks and toilet breaks. Kamui ski links has far exceeded my expectations, make sure you check it out if you are in mid Hokkaido. I will definitely plan my trip around it next time.
John S — Google review
Huge resort. Lots of powder during our stay. Paid 30,000 yen for 4 hours of ski lessons for 2 persons. Instructor was japanese but could communicate in English sufficiently (with some help from google). 3,800 yen for ski lifts (day pass)

The Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art, located in the city of Asahikawa, has been a cultural hub since its opening in 1982. It showcases wooden art and local artists' works, offering a cozy café and shop. The museum aims to deepen the appreciation for cultural creation by researching, collecting, and exhibiting art from the Dohoku region as well as Japanese and foreign pieces from diverse perspectives.
Very well curated small museum that has great exhibits for its size. The museum is also located inside a park which is very pretty and there are numerous statues outside to view before entering! I was introduced to many new artists here! The museum has a no photos policy but foreigners can use google translate to take pictures and translate the descriptions of the art found around the museum! This is a great place to visit if you find yourself in Tokiwa park with an hour to spare! The ticket prices are also quite reasonable and they offer discounts for students and senior citizens.

The Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art, nestled in Tokiwa Park at the heart of Asahikawa, is a serene and culturally rich hub that art lovers shouldn't miss. Opened in July 1982, it's recognized as Hokkaido's first prefectural art museum, designed to enrich the northern region’s cultural landscape. Inside, visitors encounter two core collections: exquisite wooden artworks that spotlight Asahikawa's celebrated woodworking tradition, alongside paintings, prints, sculptures, and crafts by artists rooted in northern Hokkaido. These exhibits—ranging from both regional and international art—are thoughtfully rotated through “Museum Collection” and special exhibition programs, offering fresh perspectives throughout the year. The museum is highly accessible, open daily from 9:30 AM to 5 PM (last entry at 4:30), with closures on Mondays (or the following day after national holidays), New Year’s holidays, and during exhibit changeovers. Admission to Gallery 2 is budget-friendly—around ¥260 for adults and ¥150 for students—with Gallery 1 fees varying depending on exhibitions. Facilities are well-equipped, featuring free parking (shared with the park), wheelchair access, accessible restrooms, slopes, nursing rooms, wheelchairs on request, and even AED availability. There's also a cafe and museum shop, perfect for relaxing after viewing the galleries.

The Asahikawa Winter Festival, organized by the Asahikawa Winter Festival Executive Committee, is a spectacular annual celebration held in Tokiwa Park that pays tribute to Japan's enchanting snowy season. This vibrant event rivals the famous Sapporo festival and showcases an impressive array of ice and snow sculptures crafted by talented artists from both local and international backgrounds. Visitors can marvel at these stunning creations, which are meticulously built over a month and illuminated beautifully at night for a truly magical experience.
(Translated by Google) There is quite a distance from Asahikawa Station to the venue. The express bus is convenient from Sapporo. The venue was large in scale, and the snow sculpture that served as the venue's stage was very large. There was also a slide (which the Self-Defense Forces had set up) that took advantage of the height, and adults and children alike were able to borrow handmade rice bag sleds and have fun. There were also many other experiences such as sitting in the driver's seat of heavy machinery, being suspended from a rope and descending about 100m away, and sliding down a snowy slope on a tire tube float. (There were some paid experiences, but I think they were all around 500 yen) There were many stalls from shops around Asahikawa, including ramen from Asahikawa and motsuni-ya, which was eaten at the racetrack in the past. There was only one trash can, so I had to go there every time I ate to throw it away, which was a pain.I visited by myself, so I left after about 3 hours, but I think if you have kids, you could enjoy the whole day. It's worth going once ✨ (Original)

The airport offers a great selection of reasonably priced food and souvenir shops, as well as an enjoyable observation deck to watch planes take off against the snowy backdrop. Despite its size, the airport is well-equipped and modern, providing a pleasant travel experience for visitors.
V impressed with this airport. My expectations were low for a small airport in a small town in Hokkaido! Pleasantly surprised by the modern amenities and wide array of food (ramen, kaisen don, curry, teppan)
Ming C — Google review
This airport was the perfect size with just enough amenities to meet a couple hours while waiting for a flight. It's very close to the rental cars, especially Toyota car rentals. They have a blend of gift stores with local delicacies, various trinkets, and travel bags including tax free service if you are a foreigner. The dining options available are actually very good from local ramen to a milk stand with delicious soft serve. But I wanted to write this review because of the information desk and the service they provided after losing a phone on the car rental shuttle bus. We had just under an hour before departure, when we realized we lost our phone. We knew where we lost it, and quickly tried to call Toyota rental, but my Japanese is not advanced enough to communicate with the rental agent. I went down to the rental car area on the 1st floor and the rental desk was closed (as expected, since they only staff it when someone is expected to pickup a rental car on arrival), however the information staff understood what happened and quickly called Toyota for me and explained. After a few minutes, they said everything is okay, and the Toyota rental car agent brought my phone to the information desk!! The relief was indescribable. Thank you to the Asahikawa information booth staff for helping resolve this situation and to the Toyota rental car staff who helped to find and bring the phone back. 🙏🙏🙏

The souvenir shop has a good selection of local products, making it easy to pick up gifts or mementos of your trip.

One of the standout features is the flight viewing deck, which provides a fantastic vantage point to watch planes take off and land. This spacious deck, complete with seating, is a delightful addition that aviation enthusiasts and families will love. On clear days, the surrounding scenery, including distant mountains, adds to the experience, making the flight viewing platform a sweet topper to an already enjoyable airport visit. Additionally, don't miss the lovely cream dispenser lady offering delicious Hokkaido milk products – a delightful treat that adds to the airport's charm.

Small and efficient. 4 minutes from landing to exit (I didn’t have luggage. Has a few shops, a Lawson, car rental and information desks. Enjoyed the charging area on the 3rd floor (it’s free) before I flew back out.

Haneda, Narita, Itami, Shin-Chitose, and some international flights are in service. In terms of companies, there is ANA JAL AirDO JetStar and some foreign airlines. There is a food court and it is okay to take a flight at noon. For some reason, there was a flight simulator (a simple one). Buses were available to Asahikawa and Furano city. The observation deck is on the second floor, where you can see airplanes up close.

As far as ease in going through and food courts go this is the best I’ve been to anywhere in world. Very limited on destinations, but once you get to Tokyo from here can go anywhere in the world. This airport makes me love Furano even more.

The Kamikawa Shrine is a beautiful shrine located in Kaguraoka Park, close to Daisetsuzan National Park and abounding with parks. The shrine features a beautiful lake and is surrounded by spiritual scenery reminiscent of flowing water.
(Translated by Google) Kamikawa Shrine Tongu Shrine is located in Joban Park in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido. Although it is located in the urban area, it seems that few people come to worship on weekdays, so the environment is very quiet and leisurely. It is even quieter when it is snowy in winter. You will pass a bridge before going to the shrine, and everything you see is very beautiful. After visiting Kamikawa Shrine Tongu Shrine, I bought a lovely royal guard with a hand-written royal seal and a cherry blossom covered with it. Kamikawa Jinja or Kamikawa Shrine os a historic shrine in the heart of Asahimawa's Tokiwa Park. Although it does not look as grand as the shrines in Kyoto, it still has that unique beauty that makes it stand on its own. Being in the park has its perks too as it is surrounded by nature which adds up to its relaxing atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) Tongu of Kamikawa Shrine in Tokiwa Park. It is easier to visit than Kamikawa Shrine in Kaguraoka because it is closer to the city and on a flat land. This shrine was built on an island in Chidorika Pond, and there are many ducks around. Although it is a shrine, it is a little unusual that there is a treasure pagoda within the precincts. It's located in a park, so you can easily visit it while taking a walk or attending a festival. You can receive a handwritten stamp. The Asahikawa Science Museum, also known as Saipal, is a captivating science center located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. It offers an interactive and educational experience for visitors of all ages with its hands-on exhibits on natural sciences, technology, and astronomy. The museum features experiment rooms, experience rooms, a planetarium, and an observatory that allows guests to explore the Northern ecosystems and the universe.
A new experience! This was my first time going to Planetarium. The best to go when you well rested, so don't fall asleep under the stars. My friend said they change the movie every month. The staff is friendly too.
Tabita E — Google review
Visited on 1st November 2024. It’s a fun place to learn about science. It would take at least 2-3 hours to truly appreciate the exhibitions. Most of the exhibits have English translation and the exhibition staff were friendly and approachable too. There is an observatory on the rooftop. Unfortunately, it was cloudy that day and we were unable to use the telescope. The view of the city from up there was great though. The only downside was the show in the planetarium, it was passable and had little to do with astrophysics. Regret being stuck in there for 40 minutes. Other than that the museum itself is a good place to visit.
Khal E — Google review
Free entry for Young kids (7 y.o.). Excellent science museum. Loved all parts of it. Small museum but I think it’s One of the best in the country. Loved science show and -40 degree room.
Nong V — Google review
This is a Science Museum, relatively small (you can also tell that by the size of its gift shop). However, I did have a very good time for hours with my little girl. All science demonstrations here delivered Science knowledge to kids, as well as funs (most with English description). Several staffs spoke English to guide us, especially when my daughter played with the "low-gravity jumping" and "free-rotation seat". So as the "taking photos of your shadows", great toy even to me. Excellent place to visit in Asahikawa!! You may put it into your travel plan.
CS K — Google review
It's a very small museum. Shows are in Japanese language only, but most of the exhibit has some English instructions/information. We pop by to kill some time before heading to the airport. There is a zero gravity experience station where you can try to experience astronaut training. There is also a small earthquake simulator if you want to experience how it feels during an earthquake. The staff were very friendly, and they do try their best to explain the key concepts to we using body language + simple english.
LH S — Google review
Great little science centre to spend an hour or two with kids. The exhibits are excellent even though all is in Japanese. Staffs are very helpful and are able to communicate in English. Only JPY 500 per adult and JPY 300 per child. Absolutely the place you can spend a great time interacting with your kids - highly recommended.

Kaguraoka Park is a beloved destination for both locals and tourists, offering a verdant retreat with sweeping vistas of the city and distant mountains. The park is renowned for its 4,000 cherry trees that paint the landscape in shades of pink during spring, creating an enchanting setting for cherry blossom viewing. It also features walking paths, playgrounds, and serves as an excellent vantage point for admiring Asahikawa's stunning night views.
Fabulous garden and forest space.

Must be the largest park in Asahikawa, filled with plenty of cherry blossoms and many other trees & plants of all kinds. Although most of them was mere wild forest, and the routes were quite challenging too - more suitable for trekking than a walk. The Kamikawa Shrine inside is also an especially great one.

Wide & wild park literally. When walking in the park, I saw 3 wild foxes. 2 of them are too quick to catch (take photos, i mean). There are many birds, squirrels as well. You can also camp here, with your own equipment for free. Love it so much, especially in the summer

There's a "hidden path" from the Shrine into the park. Nice dirt trails for jogging or walking. Yes, there are foxes (^-^) & feeding stations for the Ezo squirrels. Haven't seen it in summer, but I'm anticipating birds, butterflies, & many flowers. There's little moss covered areas for a picnic, & a playground I haven't visited. Conveniently located bathrooms, but bring hand sanitizer. Small pack of tissue paper wouldn't hurt either just in case. Seico Mart halfway up the hill across the street if you need refreshment. 上川神社Kamikawa Jinja is lovely year round, & we visited for hatsumode.

Furarito, also known as 5-7 Alley, is a historic pathway located an 11-minute walk from JR Asahikawa Station in Hokkaido. This area has retained its Showa-era charm and was once a bustling fish and vegetable market before transforming into a lively shopping district with numerous restaurants and shops. It's popular among business people for post-work outings, offering a variety of dining options such as the famous yakitori specialty restaurant, Mr. Ginneko.

Very cute alley but unfortunately the restaurants here aren’t very welcoming. Almost every place required reservation via phone call or a japanese phone number to join a waiting list - obviously most foreigners won’t be able to do so. Dont bother coming or be prepared to be majorly disappointed, unless u can get ur hotel to help make a reservation. Even on a weekday night at 6pm, most of the izakayas here were full and not accepting walk-ins (even when the restaurant is 70% empty..)

Visitors can watch the making of Kibana confections and even try their hand at making sweets in the kitchen.

Pi E — Google review
Kibana no Mori is not your typical omiyage (souvenir) shop. It’s more like a multi-functional space, integrating several services under one roof. Aside from its own retail space showcasing its popular confections, it also has a cafe where guests could enjoy some of their sweet creations, as well as a library with books for guests to read free of charge (unfortunately it’s all in Japanese), all housed next to their production kitchens where their famous confections, cakes and pastries are made. They even have culinary classes for kids. Tsuboya, the company behind Kibana no Mori, is known for their confection, the Kibana, which won numerous Monde Selection awards and has become their main product. Kibana no Mori is the only place in Hokkaido where all 3 flavours of Kibana are sold (i.e. original, strawberry and chocolate). They have free samples for all 3 flavours which you can try at the retail section. The Kibana tastes really good and makes a perfect gift. Visiting Kibana no Mori was definitely one of the few memorable highlights from my recent trip to Asahikawa. The decor and style of the place has a modern Japanese feel, using a lot of wood with simple clean designs and utilising natural and warm lighting, creating a warm and cozy ambience. Lounging at the cafe while enjoying the cakes and coffee while overlooking their garden felt so relaxing and peaceful. One thing that you have to try would be their apple pie which is very popular with the locals. It’s got this lovely flaky crust that just crumbles in your mouth. The diced apples were perfectly cooked and still has that bite to it which was great (hate it when the apples are overcooked making soft a mushy). It was also not overly sweet with a nice refreshing tanginess. The apples were enveloped with a thin layer of frangipane, adding a dash of nutty aroma. As for their other cake and snack selections, it really depends on what you order. Some are pretty good while others are pretty average. The place is pretty quiet during the weekdays but gets more local crowd on the weekends (we visited the place twice, once on a weekday and once on a weekend, and noticed the difference in the crowd). Please do note that if you wish to try their apple pie, it’s best to try it on a weekday as it’ll be sold out very quickly on a weekend, unless you arrive there early on a weekend. I noticed that practically all their customers are locals. It could be that most tourists either don’t know of the place or don’t know how to get here as it’s inconvenient get to (not near a train station or requires a lot of walking) Fear not as it’s as simple as taking a bus. Just head on over to bus stop number 27 (located in front of Hotel Route-Inn Grand Asahikawa Ekimae) and take bus 71. Then get off at 5 jo 20 chome (if you’re unsure you can refer to Google maps for navigation, just remember to get off just before the cross junction a street away from the building as the bus will turn the other direction away from the building). If you’re a fan of sweets, confections and lounging at relaxing cafes, then this place is recommended for you. It’s definitely 4 stars in my books.

(Translated by Google) I was a bit nervous about the permanent exhibition on the second floor as there were many busts. I was shocked, but then I relaxed when I saw that half the floor was filled with large exhibits. The building is the only nationally designated Important Cultural Property in Asahikawa. I really like the small external staircase in the corner of the portico and the internal staircase. It's about 6km north of Asahikawa Station, so I rented a bike at the station and was able to take my time looking around in 4 hours and 10 minutes, going from Tokiwa Park to Asahibashi Bridge to Hokuchin Memorial Hall to Sculpture Art Museum to Yasushi Inoue Memorial Hall to Starfin Baseball Stadium. I ended up staying at Tokiwa Park for a long time as I had a very good impression of it.

(Translated by Google) First visit, October 11, 2025. Teijiro Nakahara (1888, October 4, 1921 - January 7, 1921) was one of Japan's leading sculptors of the Taisho period. Born in Kushiro, Nakahara disliked his overly strict father and voluntarily moved to Asahikawa with his mother in 1897 to be adopted by his maternal uncle and aunt. He later enrolled in Hokkaido Prefectural Sapporo Junior High School (now Sapporo Minami High School) with the goal of becoming a doctor, but after failing and dropping out in his third year, he moved to Tokyo to study painting. However, due to the high cost of paints, he gave up painting and turned to sculpture. He created 25 works throughout his life until he died at the age of 32 from acute uremia caused by overwork. Excluding some that he was never satisfied with and destroyed himself, all 12 of his remaining works are on display at the Nakahara Teijiro Memorial Asahikawa Sculpture Museum. In 1962 (Showa 37), more than 40 years after Nakahara Teijiro's death, Teijiro's works found their way to Asahikawa thanks to the efforts of his friend and sculptor, Hirakushi Denchu, who was the model for his posthumous sculpture, the Hirakushi Denchu Statue (they had been creating portraits of each other), as well as Kato Akikiyo, who had experience as a substitute teacher in Asahikawa and was influenced by Teijiro to become a sculptor himself. On May 24, 1927, Ryunosuke Akutagawa gave a lecture titled "One Aspect of Poe" at the former Niigata High School (now Niigata University). He viewed the "Young Caucasian" exhibit at the school and later wrote in his travelogue "Tohoku, Hokkaido, Niigata": "Niigata High School, who knows? Is there anyone who falls in love with this bronze 'Young Man' by Nakahara Teijiro? This young man is still alive!" (Niigata is a place with ties to Teijiro's wife, Makoto, and Niigata University is said to have three of this statue: the original and two replicas.) Photography is permitted inside and outside the museum building, as well as the outdoor sculptures, but photography of the artworks inside is prohibited. Please take the time to burn the image into your eyes and mind. By the way, this building, the "Old Asahikawa Kaikosha," was designated as an Important Cultural Property (Structure) by the nation on May 19, 1989, and underwent a major renovation from 2012 (H24) to 2017 (H29), where it was partially demolished and then restored with earthquake reinforcement and other necessary repairs. The building itself is also very popular, with the occasional tourist arriving by taxi. Perhaps they could be presented in a more creative way. The special exhibition was good, but the permanent works were just lined up in a large room, which made it difficult to appreciate each one individually. How about separating the works with partitions to make them stand out? The number of security guards is limited, so I understand that this will be difficult, but please consider it. Also, I was disappointed that there was no exhibition of the latest award-winning works. Since it was featured prominently on Asahikawa City's website, I assumed I would be able to view them. Kaikosha is a good building, but the bottom part of the flooring seems not to have been replaced, so it creaks when you walk on it. It is entertaining, though. I thought it was great to be able to view the works in a well-cleaned and pristine space.

You can see the works of artists who have received such a prestigious award at this museum. By visiting this museum, you can understand the history of modern Japanese sculpture. The collection of Nakahara Teijiro, who produced only a few works, is quite complete, and there are many worth seeing, from his representative work "Young Caucasian" to "Statue of Hirakushi Denchu", "Statue of an Old Beggar", and "Old Man". Other works include Yasutake Funakoshi, Yoshitatsu Yanagihara, Tadayoshi Sato, Kyoko Asakura, Masaru Kiuchi, Tadayoshi Sato, Bikki Sunazawa, Shin Hongo, and Katsura Funakoshi. It was at this museum that I was shown Yasutake Funakoshi's representative work "Castle of Hara" for the first time in my life. When I saw this work, I was so overwhelmed that I got chills. OMO7 Asahikawa by Hoshino Resorts is a modern hotel located near the central train station in Asahikawa. The hotel offers cozy, minimalist rooms and features three restaurants, a relaxed bar, and a spa. Situated just a minute's walk from 5-7 Furarito, a beloved restaurant street with a nostalgic atmosphere from the Showa period, OMO7 Asahikawa provides an ideal base to experience the local charm of the city.
A Stay That Glows with Comfort and Whimsy Our stay at OMO7 was superb. The room was spacious and calming, thoughtfully designed for both comfort and style. Breakfast was a standout, fresh, generous and served in a space that felt like morning wrapped in light and warmth. It was more than a meal, it was a mood. I also loved their onsen, the facility is clean, serene and is the perfect way to unwind. The lobby was dressed in a playful Halloween theme during my visit, adding a touch of festive charm that made the whole experience feel even more welcoming. And the bar? A delightful surprise. With its campsite theme and actual wood burning fire, it felt like a cozy retreat tucked inside the city, warm, aromatic and quietly magical. OMO7 blends hospitality with heart and I left feeling both rested and delighted.

Stayed for 2 nights. Hotel looks dated, it looked much better in photos and in winter. Stayed in twin room. It's tiny, only place to stow luggage is under the bed, and even the it couldn't contain all of it. Bathroom is also very small, barely enough room to move in. Not good for a tall person. No night lights in the room, only option of blinding light across the room, or just blinding light on your bed. Nice view of the outside though. Amenities are convenient though, you get a switch located right next to your pillow, and the Stoke cups in the room are a nice touch. Onsen and bath at the basement level. Male and female baths switch location depending on time of day. Bath area was small, with 1 warm pool and 1 larger cooler pool, steam room and sauna. It gets very crowded after dinnertime. There's also a lounge area where you can hang out after the bath - here they provide Popsicles and drinks for free. Very nice. Breakfast buffet is quite limited. Mostly Japanese style rice and dishes, some pastries and fruit. They had 2 specialty dishes, the seafood bowl with horseradish and smoke salmon waffle. Both were great. Additionally, the resort also provides soft serve and tea in the lobby in the afternoon which was again very awesome. Parking though is extremely limited. The resort does have an arrangement with the surrounding carparks so you get a good discount when you park there, although it's a short walk from there. Location-wise, pretty quiet but there are quite a few food options in the area, the very friendly and helpful staff are happy to point them out. There's also a map in the lobby to refer to and QR codes which provides direction. Conclusion: good family hotel amenities, although rooms are small and structure is dated. Refurbished rooms give a more modern touch.

We stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights in Sep/25. Overall, it's an OK stay. - Smart design with efficient use of space with the raised floor to store suitcases. This would only work for small suitcases or the ones opened in the middle. For suitcases with side opening, it wouldn't work as they would be too thick for the raised floor cavity. - Lack of USB charging ports. There's only one at the desk area which unfortunately didn't work. - There're 3 of us but the hotel only provided 2 room keys which was very inconvenient (we asked for another but were refused due to their policy???) - Breakfast was OK - Room was of reasonable size - Good location, easy parking

THE POLAR BEAR ROOM WAS AMAZING!! So off the bat, everyone was super friendly and helpful at the front desk while checking in. Personally I was in awe at how beautiful the lobby was. Afterwards, the staff helped me bring my luggage to the elevator which was super nice. The room was INCREDIBLE!! And the little cafe was fantastic too! Every time I came down, I had no idea what new thing would be awaiting for me! I loved the board with all the restaurant suggestions too! But the bath, the bath was EXTRAORDINARY! I felt so spoiled every day! I spent 23 days in Japan, did 11 different hotels and this is the one, that was my absolute favorite!

This is the third Hoshino hotel we stayed at in 3 weeks, previously was at Fuji and Hakodate, both were wonderful experience; however, this time was terrible. Service and Staffs are great, kept up with Hoshino standard, but the major issue is the room temperature. The temperature that day wasn't even freezing yet, there is no snow, we have two rooms, both rooms' heater was turn on to the max and just like a sauna, the worst part is it doesn't have cooling feature. The lobby and the hallway temperature were keep nice and cool perfect for people just came in with winter clothing, just don't understand why the room was so hot. Even with an extra fan sent by the front desk, I still haven't difficulty to sleep. The second issue is the Sauna and Bath facility, it is very small compare to the size of the hotel, get extremely crowded, most people prefer the warm tub; however, it can only fit few people before getting uncomfortable; they have a 5-6 times larger size tub but is cold and no one is using it. I had the room with one bed, which has decent space for you to move around and put your luggage, even has a elevated sofa area, if you luggage is not big you can slide under the bed; however, case is a bit different to my family's room, they have a twin beds, space is very limited. There is also no nightstand next to the bed, they installed plug on the headboard, but you got no way to put your phone except leaving it on your bed. There is only ONE microwave on the laundry room on the 4th floor, you need to pray there isn't many people fighting for it; the ice machine and water dispenser are also located there, really inconvenience especially one of the elevator was broken during our stay. We didn't try the breakfast, but can see in the morning it is very crowded, so you want to get up early for seat. The sound isolation in the hotel is pretty poor as well, the hotel has a lot of family travel with kids, and 6-7AM you can hear all the noised from the hallway and the room next door, not ideal if you want to sleep in. Usually I will not hesitate to stay a one of the Hoshino hotel, but I really couldn't recommend this one base on my experience.

Animal themed hotel suitable for anyone with kids. When you check in you’ll get a quiz to count how many animals are there in the room. My son enjoyed spotting all the not so obvious polar bears and really didn’t wanna check out from the room. Breakfast was alright but parking is a little expensive.

What a terrible experience. Booked this hotel on booking.com (which was already paid online). The hotel charged us again and it took more than one hour for them to sort out the matter. My family wasted precious time just waiting for them to sort things out on our holiday. In terms of the room, I’ve booked a triple bed. The 3rd bed didn’t come with linen/blanket and you have to pay an additional 8000 yen and set it up yourself. Moreover, the room is not fully renovated. The toilet and entrance door are recycled from the previous hotel. Even the Aircond is from the old hotel system, not cold and not strong. Even some of the shower levers in the public bath were not working. You would think that by paying this much for a hotel, you would get what you paid for. For my family, my wife was really pissed because the reception made us pay twice and then wasted our time for the refund process, hotel room was not really ‘new/renovated’ and worst of all we paid for a triple bed room only to find the 3rd bed does not come with linen/blanket and we have to pay extra for that. What is the point of the 3rd bed then? Oh yeah, their TV is also not a smart TV, so my son couldn’t watch his particular cartoons. Also, on booking.com, it said breakfast is included for a triple bed room. They only issued vouchers for 2 adults and insist I had to pay for my kid (1 child). I showed the reception staff my booking and said ‘breakfast included for triple bed room - meaning 3 people’ but they still insisted we pay. I think you can understand why my wife was upset and how this spoilt our holiday experience. Please do the right thing and avoid this hotel as they will try to find a way to charge you more. Note: we didn’t end up using the 3rd bed and paid for my son’s breakfast buffet as my wife refused to allow this hotel to scam us into paying more. We lived in cheaper hotels and they were way better than OMO7

We paid for a Superior Triple Room for our little family of 4 (both our kids are under 6yo and can stay with us for free, but I figured a mid-journey splurge so my husband could get a better sleep with his own bed would be nice) but arrived to a room with only 2 beds made up and the 3rd bed bare, with a note saying they’ll charge us a further ¥8000 if we try to use it - puzzling considering we booked a triple room for its 3 beds, otherwise I might as well have booked a double room and saved my money right? We also paid extra for “Breakfast Included” which usually means ‘for all 4 of us’. But no, reception kept asking for more payment so my older child can eat with us. For a child who has not touched much of the other “breakfast included” hotel buffets thus far? No thanks (he ended up sitting through our Omo7 breakfast with none of the food of interest to him anyway). Disappointing they even badger about it, when they’d marketed an included breakfast with the room. The biggest horror was that they mistakenly charged me for someone else’s booking on top of my own (¥42,900 x2 is no small sum) and I wouldn’t even have realised it had they not badgered me about the breakfast charge! They said I hadn’t paid for my booking yet so I believed them. After putting through the payment, they started asking about the child breakfast fee, which made me bring up my booking confirmation to point out “Breakfast Included”, only to realise I’d paid weeks ahead for the room. The look of horror on the receptionist’s face when he realised he’d charged me for someone else’s room was almost as horrified as my own! With their limited English, it took multiple staff to communicate the issue and hours to ‘fix’ the charges - the extra charge is still pending on my credit card at the time of writing. I couldn’t get the names of staff as all nametags bear only Kanji, so I can only identify them by sight not names. Just my bad luck this receptionist went home before this billing issue was even settled. After multiple visits to reception to rectify the billing and dispute the breakfast and bedding (they don’t tell you that reception’s phone extension is ‘2’ by the way!), they eventually agreed to waive the ¥8000 make-your-own-bed-with-linen-hidden-under-the-bed fee, but by then my poor exhausted husband had fallen asleep with the 2 kids so the 3rd bed still stands bare and unused. My experience of their public bath was cut short by all these issues, but lucky me, I still had 50minutes to “relax” before it would close, it being 11.10pm by the time reception conceded the bed fee. The place was deserted since normal people don’t publicly bathe so late. Their shower is hilarious, you have to manually pump it up and down to get water through the shower head before it cuts off every 8 seconds. I lost count of the number of times I was caught off-guard and had to grope blindly for the lever, since my eyes had soap dripping in. Cost-saving exercise masked as environmentally-friendly. Overall a disappointment, we’d only stayed there for a few hours, unless you include the time we wasted at reception. Hopefully they sort out the payment problem as I fear Google-translate-communicating with them any further.

Located in the Ishikawa River valley at the border between the Kamikawa Basin and the Ishikari Plain, Kamuy Kotan is a beautiful spot with scenic greenschist cliffs and rapids. The Ainu people of the area used waterways as their main means of transportation, and this scenic spot is known for its picturesque fall foliage.
Very nice scenery. the bridge and river Place where you can take picture of the train(2 train) A hiking spot im guessing up to a shrine near the train area, went half way and came back down as not prepared for it. Narrow, rocky, overgrown grass and spider webs which my friend wasnt liking it Finally the tunnel, didnt go in but its cool

Done hiking both 神居岩 and 神居 hiking courses. The condition of the path wasn't good which was very narrow, rockily and full of glasses (and I felt like I am following the animal's path) so you need to be well equipped and should wear hiking boots. 神居岩 route was harder but better than the other. You'll have nice view from the summit!! There is a loo and free parking spot.

Very nice place!! Good for resting and views. If you are in BICYCLE: * There is a long bicycle road to the city. Part of it was closed when we visited. However we ride the open part through the forest and saw 2 deers. * It’s also nice to avoid tunnels and traffic.

Pippu Ski Resort is a family-friendly destination offering stunning views of Kamikawa Basin and the nearby hot spring facility. With nine diverse courses, it caters to skiers of all levels, from beginners to advanced. The resort's slopes are covered in powder snow, providing an enjoyable experience for all visitors. Additionally, the area is known for backcountry skiing in the trees and offers a variety of runs with steep sections.
Great value for the price. Decent tree skiing when other mountains are long tracked out. I wish they had merchandise of their awesome strawberry mascot. Day passes are typically in 4 hour blocks, it was not clear if they offer an open to close pass. It was $45 USD for two adults and two meal tickets! Steal of a deal. One word of caution for other tourist skiers is that the lift ticket you get is a waterproof paper pass with no way attach it your jacket or bibs. We just happened to have tyvek tape in our backpack which did the trick! I think most of the locals use an arm band which they put the pass in. They sell them in the building by the blue lift for about 900 yen at the time of writing. We did the tape trick but others may end up having to spend the extra 900 yen but it's so cheap already it's fine.

This resort is fantastic. It has 2 main lifts on the front face and then a second longer lift to the right which leads to off piste tracks and 4 or so other runs. There is both beginner and more advanced terrain on piste (including a rope course for early beginners just learning to ski). The piste is excellently groomed and has a great pitch and multiple runs on the fall line. Myself (intermediate skier) and my partner (advanced skier) travelled here and came back for a second day. The weekend is a little busier than the weekdays (where it is genuinely practically empty) but on both you will barely have to wait for the lift. The cafeteria does excellent meals for around 1,000 yen and the staff and lift operators are all very friendly and go above and beyond. If you are staying close by I would definitely recommend a visit. Also … the day pass comes with free access to the onsen down the road which is such a nice way to end a cold day on the slopes.

A fantastic little ski resort. We were getting fresh tracks here 3 days after it snowed. Amazing grooming too, some seriously good corduroy with the sides left ungroomed for some little stashes. Much like the other local resorts, the locals all seem to stick to the same area, meaning you can find fantastic fresh lines around with very little effort. The blue chair is great, nice and long with some great lines. And the cute double green chair is great for getting your hip to the ground. Cheap as lift tickets, grab a 4H pass and have lunch for well under 3000/person Highly recommend spending a day at this adorable little resort, had a great time spending Christmas day here

- A small ski field and not crowd at all -around 1 hour public bus ride (one bus stop is situated opposite to JR station) -low price lift ticket - many visitors are either race club/team racers or expert skiiers/boarders, and were quite graceful to watch and learn from for me as an intermediate skier - Its a nice surprise that unlikely other local small ski resorts that usually have only one cafeteria, there are two, one at the base and another at the bottom of the most right chairlift (or walk within 5 minutes from the base). The second one is even more local and offers sashimi rice bowl and tasty local miso soup with fish.

This is not just a furniture store. It is also a fabulous design museum. There is so much excellent furniture design on display with explanations of how it is made, where the wood comes from, the logic and principles of the furniture makers. I would recommend this as the number one place to go if you are visiting Asahikawa. The staff are very welcoming and happy to explain anything. Plus there is a lovely cafe.

It's great because you can get around in a short amount of time when you don't have much time. The prices are bargains and it's fun. Asahikawa Kitasaito Garden is a highly recommended spot for immersing in the natural beauty of Asahikawa. Located on the south side of JR Asahikawa Station, it offers an expansive scenery with flowerbeds and the flowing Chubetsu River. Despite being behind a modern station, it presents a landscape that reflects the great nature of Hokkaido.
A park behind the JR Asahikawa station is awesome with Chubetsu river passing by.

The Tree of Ken and Mary is a tall poplar tree located in the Biei Shirogane hot spring resort area, known for its appearance in a 1970s Nissan commercial. It stands out in the area and is easily recognizable. The subterranean waterfall nearby, with water flowing from the Tokachidake mountain range, adds to the natural beauty of the surroundings.
The Tree of Ken and Mary is a beautiful and iconic spot in Biei, known for its role in a famous commercial for the Nissan Skyline. Visiting in winter, we found the landscape (fukei) around the tree truly breathtaking, with snow-covered fields stretching out into the distance. The tree, standing alone against the vast, snowy backdrop, creates a peaceful and almost nostalgic scene, especially for fans of the commercial. Winter brings a quiet beauty to the area, making it an ideal time for those who enjoy tranquil, scenic views and a touch of cinematic history.

Nestled atop a picturesque hill, the Seven Stars Tree is an iconic oak that has captured the hearts of many since 1976. This solitary tree offers stunning panoramic views of Patchwork Road, making it a must-visit spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. Originally known as Kitaei-no-Ippon Ki, its fame skyrocketed when it was featured on the packaging for Seven Stars cigarettes by Japan Tobacco.
This is the tree that gained popularity as a tourist attraction after being featured in Japan Tobacco’s ‘Seven Stars’ advertisement in 1976. However, the famous birch tree-lined road of Patchwork Road was completely cut down in January 2025 due to the disruptive behaviour of both Chinese and domestic tourists. I visited in December 2024.

The Seven Stars Tree in Biei is an iconic sight known for its picturesque beauty, or fukei. This lone oak tree stands proudly in the middle of vast fields, creating a stunning backdrop that has made it a favorite photo spot for visitors. Visited during summer and was a nice place to walk off around with the kids. The views of the surrounding "patchwork" fields was also great, viewed from the observatory. Also has some souvenir shops and a few spots to pick up a quick bite. Toilets are also there. It was quite busy when we went with lots of tourists. Recommended.

A good pitstop from biei to asahikawa (15km or so to the town) . You will have to climb to level 2 of the deck to see a paranoma view of the area. The entry is free and car-parking is free too. The park itself has walking routes, but i did not attempt to walk. So im not sure of the quality of walk in the area. There are a few shops opposite the carpark. The shops are closing when we reached around 1645hrs and closed by 1700hrs. Toilets are available here, but kinda of smelly.

The Hokkaido Ice Pavilion in Asahikawa offers a unique experience of winter even in the summer months. The facility features an ice tunnel with temperatures as low as -20C, a wall of icicles, and an extreme cold corner reaching -41C. Visitors can also enjoy activities like sliding on snow and feeding goats. The ice hall covers 600m2 and contains around 1,000 tons of ice, providing a stunning backdrop for photos.
Highly recommend this place. You'll have the opportunity to experience -21°C and -41°C. Went there today for a break due to the heavy snow, and we were the only guests on arrival. The staff were kind and passionate, although we were the only visitors. Warm tea was given after the cold room. There is a shrine and a slide outside. The slide cost 200 JPY, but the staff let us use it for free. The slide is highly recommended and it made my day, thanks to the staff. Their kindness and energy; I will always remember.

For anyone coming from a country without snow, Hokkaido Ice Pavilion is such a fascinating place to visit! ❄️ It’s your chance to experience what –21°C actually feels like — an exciting kind of cold that’s both fun and unforgettable. It’s so freezing that even a wet towel turns solid in seconds! The staff there are super friendly and attentive, offering the kind of excellent service you can always expect in Japan. The place itself is clean, well-maintained, and beautifully designed. If you’ve never experienced snow or extreme cold before, this is definitely a must-visit spot — a special place to feel that icy chill at least once in your life. I drove there from my accommodation, which took about an hour, and since it was autumn, the scenery along the way was absolutely stunning. The whole trip was totally worth it! 🚗🍁

The Hokuchin Memorial Museum in Asahikawa is a historical treasure trove showcasing the legacy of the Tondenhei, who were tasked with developing and safeguarding Hokkaido. The museum features exhibits detailing the history of the 7th Division of the former Imperial Army, including valuable documents and artifacts from that era. Visitors can explore photographs and music from this significant period in Hokkaido's past.
I came for the Golden Kamuy collaboration and loved the museum for the history! There was no ticket necessary but make sure not to take pictures of inside the store for the merchandise.

I had a great time touring this museum. The staff is incredibly friendly and there is an app that has English explanations for each area. It was very informative and easy to follow. I came as a Golden Kamuy fan, which the staff seem to be used to. In their little shop they sell a variety of merch and Golden Kamuy goods. The staff there was also very friendly and I enjoyed talking with her about Goldeb Kamuy. I was so shy at first though and regret not chatting more!
Misaki — Google review
The museum is free entrance. I believe there is a dedicated staff would guide each of us visiting in Japanese - that was what I saw but I didn’t get one as I’m a foreigner. They surveyed where you from, gender and age before you entered the museum. Pictures and videos are not allowed. I downloaded the app but they’re mostly what I could read on the limited English description inside. I can understand kanji but not Japanese overall so I wasn’t fully understand. But the collection itself is quite rich. Also my first time to learn about some fact from the war from a different perspective - at least the names are different! I just wish I could understand more Japanese
Rui Z — Google review
I visited the Asahikawa Hokushin Memorial Museum, expecting a historical exhibition that presents a balanced view of Japan’s past. However, what I encountered was a highly selective narrative focusing only on the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) as a defender of Russian agression, while completely ignoring the broader impact of Japan’s expansion in East Asia. The museum glorifies Japan’s military victories, portraying the war as a heroic struggle against Russia, but it makes no mention of Korea/ China, which were deeply affected by Japan’s actions during and after the war. The exhibits fail to acknowledge that Japan used this war as a stepping stone to colonize Korea in 1910, leading to decades of oppression and suffering. The audio guide was particularly concerning, as it depicted Japanese soldiers as selfless warriors fighting for the Emperor, without any reference to the consequences of Japan’s imperial ambitions. The war is presented as a justified and honorable conflict, completely omitting the brutality and political maneuvers that followed.

An absolute MUST if you're a fan of Golden Kamuy as well as Japanese history! Incredibly helpful staff. They offered a self guided app in English that had numbers to follow with information at each stop and a map of the museum. One elder staff member even made sure I understood how to use the app and follow along and asked for feedback. I was able to use Google translate for any placards that I wanted to read more about too. At the end they had some Golden Kamuy costumes they let me try on and a cute little store! The girl working the store was incredibly sweet and we chatted about Golden Kamuy through Google translate. This was probably the highlight of my experience on top of a wonderfully cared for museum. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Good price. Especially the night session which is 500 yen for 4 hours 4 pm - 8 pm. However, we found that the path got very icy at night which was too slippery for beginners. We asked for a refund as we did not take the ride, it was rejected. I think they could be more flexible on their policy.

We spoke to the receptionist, and we told him that the website didn't have this information, and he told us that the information was displayed on a poster in the carpark (which is useless, since you wouldn't know until you got there...). We left extremely bewildered and confused, and we checked the site again after we left, at which point we noticed that the site was newly updated with information about the modified opening hours... We scoured the website again, just to make sure we didn't miss the news about modified opening hours by our own mistake. The information was modified opening hours was only available in an old blogpost from February, titled 'Cessation of Pairlift Operation'. I don't know what to say. I would go somewhere else, simply because this kind of thing is absolutely basic for any sort of business, let alone a ski resort.

Hanasaki Sports Park is a large park that offers a variety of activities in all seasons. In spring, the cherry blossoms will be beautiful and in autumn, the leaves will change color. In summer, there are tournaments for high school students and in winter, they will be able to slide on tubes. This park is perfect for everyone to enjoy!
Great park with a big gym with various training facilities, an outdoor pool, track, baseball field, tennis courts, etc with lots of parking, paths for walking or running and some nice grassy areas.

Arashiyama Park in Asahikawa is a popular green space where locals go to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The park features a large pond, walking paths, and various trees and flowers. Visitors can learn about wildflowers that grow naturally in Asahikawa at the park's center, which also showcases Ainu culture and Jomon ruins. Additionally, there is a wildflower garden located in Takasu Town next to Asahikawa City that offers beautiful natural scenery.
Good hill to climb. Took us about 30 minutes to reach the observation deck. From the deck you can see all of Asahikawa City. Great for beginners and those who are interested in Ainu history.

(Translated by Google) September 27, 2025 - This is my first visit to the Takasu Botanical Garden. While it's located within Takasu Town, it's operated and managed by Asahikawa City (a bit strange, I know). Located less than 200 meters away, near the confluence of the Ishikari River and the Osarappe River, the garden is located at the foot of Arashiyama, a sacred site revered by the Ainu people and steeped in history and culture. The garden covers an area of 12.25 hectares, with a total walking trail of 5.2 kilometers (with 30-minute, 1-hour, and 2-hour courses available). The garden was originally opened in May 1972 by the Asahikawa Forestry Bureau, with the aim of providing opportunities for citizens to stroll and interact with the garden and training for its staff. It was established to restore and protect pre-development forest vegetation on national land. In April 1998, it came under the jurisdiction of Asahikawa City, and the "Ainu Cultural Forest and Traditional Kotan" opened as an annex of the Asahikawa City Museum. In 1989, the Asahikawa Arashiyama Visitor Center, Japan's first privately run visitor center, opened, and in 2006, the Arashiyama Park Center, which merged the Ainu Cultural Forest & Traditional Kotan Museum and the Hokuriku Wildflower Garden Management Office, opened. By the way, the Hokuriku Wildflower Garden is open from late April to October 15th (however, the Arashiyama Park Center is open at other times, but is closed on the second and fourth Mondays of each month and over the New Year holidays). It is open from 9am to 5pm, is open every day during the opening period, and admission is free. The parking lot was confusing; I got lost wandering around the area, not realizing that the parking lot was on the opposite bank, under the bridge and on the riverbed. There is a parking lot under the bridge on the opposite bank of the Osarappe River (not on the Arashiyama side where the wildflower garden is located), so you can park your car there and walk across the Chinomishiri (Chinomishiri = we, pray, mountain) Ruika Bridge to the center. However, if you live in Asahikawa City, which is extremely hot in the summer, I think it feels good to just take a leisurely walk. The day I went was an extremely hot day in Asahikawa City, with the temperature exceeding 35 degrees! ️ What's more, I was on a touring trip, and I was getting groggy from being constantly exposed to the hot wind on my bike, but it was quite cool here as it was covered in trees. I took a break and enjoyed walking around here. Now, I said earlier that there aren't any new plants, but there are many kinds. There was a lot of PR about Tomitaro Makino, also known as Mantaro, who was featured on the drama this morning, and I imagined that if Dr. Makino were to visit here, he would be absorbed in it for hours on end. Moonlight Ladies Dog Sledding is located in Takasu-Cho, a 30-minute drive from JR Asahikawa Station. The establishment offers a unique and exhilarating experience with sturdy dog sleds overlooking the snow-covered mountain ranges of Mt. Tokachi and Daisetsuzan. Visitors can enjoy a 7-kilometer dog sled course, riding individual sleds or as a group. Children can also ride with a guide for added family fun.

At first it was really hard to reserve. No answer to emails or messages online. I managed to contact a travel agency that got me a reservation. The experience is really nice and the people running it too. They are passionate and happy to tell you more about the story and culture behind it. A warning for the more adventurous: the course is set with “walls” on each side. So there is no room for adventures to control the dogs as you wish. The controls are slight steering and breaking. Really unique experience!

"You never been to Asahikawa if you don't visit this place" The place is located inside the town so I strongly suggest renting a car but the bus works as well. Either way it is easy to recognize the place because there are signs with dog marks. The host, Kyoko-san and Dan was very courteous and kind... and so patient. My group arrived later than scheduled, let's see... about 30-40 minutes late. :) Even so, they are very understanding and said it is okay. Before the actual ride, We had a instructions/briefing and it was very informative. All information you needed was well explained, (I like the part when they mentioned about the 2-3 or the 20-30 people last year that fell during the ride, of course at first I didn't believed until I fell myself, which was the best experience, Falling was actually fun! The dogs at their farm are friendly! I suggest take pictures with them. I actually wanted to bring home one if only I'm not flying back to Okinawa, Lol For your pictures and videos, Don't worry they have the best camera and video and... they can send you the data! As one member of my group said when he saw his picture, "This picture is so good that I may use this on my profile pic on Tinder, Lol. Overall the experience was awesome and will definitely come back next winter. I thank Kyoko-san and Dan for the warmest welcome to your Dog Farm on a Winter Time"

Our family of three had a brilliant time at Moonlight ladies dog sledding. We drove there in a rental. Google maps brought us to the door steps. We could feel the love Kyoko-san and Dan have for their dogs. For us, more than sights (sights were beautiful of course) this was the star moment in our little run in Hokkaido. To talk with working folks, feel and share their love for the work and dogs. Our very best wishes to the family at Moonlight ladies. We wish you all the best!

LOVED this. Hosts were informative and friendly and ensured we had a great experience. Dogs are gorgeous and well cared for. I was very nervous when I realised you had to control the sled yourself but they were patient and I’m so glad I did it. The excitement of the dogs at the prospect of pulling the sled was great to see. Meeting the dogs and learning about them was a highlight for me 😊 All in all a must do.

Family friendly with a snow escalator for learning and very close to Asahikawa jr station by car. There is a free hill to learn and practice as well. This resort is not very big. There's a small cafe, big rest area, and ski school. We paid about 5000 yen for a full adult rental package (goggles, helmet, pants, jacket, shoes, and board), and 3000 for child set (no jacket and pants) for 2 hours. 5 hours would be 500 yen more and you can add it on if you stay longer. It's the same price. We paid 2150 yen for a half day ticket. Night time ticket from 4 - 9pm is extra. Also, the bunny hill escalator is 1300 yen and not included with the regular lift ticket. We just went with the regular halfday lift ticket and learned on the regular slope. Staff is very friendly with some English speakers.

Before you go, check the Otokoyama web page to see if it's open. Please note that depending on your car's navigation system, you may not be able to find the location by searching. When the park is closed, the fence several hundred meters below the park is closed, so you cannot go there. The park opens at 9 a.m. If you go first thing in the morning, there will be fewer people strolling around, so I think it's a good place to take photos. The route goes in circles, so you can go around it all in about an hour. My feet are a little rough in some places, so I recommend wearing sneakers or other shoes that you can walk around in. High heels are impossible (I don't think there are any). The purpose of coming here is to see one of the largest clusters of anthrax in Hokkaido. There are also a few white katakuri, but I think it would be better to ask the shop at Otokoyama about this. You can also see skunk cabbage, but it's a little far from the promenade, so you'll need a telephoto camera of 150mm or more. It's a nice walking course where you can hear the chirping of wild birds. There is a shop selling Otokoyama's sake and non-alcoholic amazake, making it a great souvenir. Since maintenance is difficult, I donated a small amount to the charity fund. Panoramic Flower Gardens Shikisai-no-oka is a popular tourist attraction in Biei, featuring vast and colorful flower gardens that bloom all year round. The gardens showcase a variety of flowers such as tulips, pansies, poppies, lupines, lavender, and marigolds. Visitors can enjoy strolling through the patterned rows of blossoms or opt for a leisurely ride on a tractor bus.
Visited recently in summer and it was very hot and scotching. Recommend to put on sunblock and bring UV umbrella. Flowers were nice. Purchased tickets on the spot via the machines. I do not recommend to take the tram ride as it was only for 15 mins and the farm area is actually walkable. Tram goes one small round and stops for 3mins at a spot for photo taking, brings you back to the original stop and the ride ended.

The view at this place was spectacular. The flowers had a variety of colors and the same was beautiful. The air was refreshing and pictures taken with best with a blue sky. The place was big and you could not finish walking it within 5 hours. You could take a car and drive around it. I visited on a public holiday I did not have to wait and I could buy tickets there directly.
Kurtis L — Google review
Nice place for flowers field watching but you will pay for the access. The place was extremely crowded, a lot of touristic bus stopped by. The famous potatoes snacks weren't so exciting. They're not salty and not crunchy outside. It was fun renting the kart even though it was expensive compared to the ratio yen/time

Visiting Shikisai-no-oka truly feels like stepping into a painting. The rolling hills are covered with many different kinds of flowers, each arranged carefully to create stunning patterns and colorful waves that stretch across the landscape. From tulips to lavender, sunflowers to marigolds, the gardens showcase the best of every season. What makes this place so special is not only the vibrant colors, but also the way the flowers are planted in creative designs — forming beautiful shapes and breathtaking panoramas that look magical from every angle. Whether you walk among the blooms or view them from above, the scenery is endlessly impressive. The gardens are peaceful, well-kept, and surrounded by the natural beauty of Biei’s gentle hills, making it a perfect place to relax and take photos. Truly, Shikisai-no-oka is a must-visit destination in Hokkaido for anyone who loves nature, flowers, and unforgettable views. 🌿✨

I visited Shikisai-no-Oka in July, and while the weather was hot and humid, arriving right at opening made all the difference. I beat the tour buses and had the chance to capture stunning photos of the vibrant flower fields without crowds. The panoramic views of rolling hills blanketed in seasonal blooms are absolutely breathtaking - like walking through a living painting. Despite the heat, the early morning light and peaceful atmosphere made it a truly memorable experience. Highly recommended for photographers and nature lovers - just go early and bring water!

This is a gorgeous place also called a great paradise! The colorful flowers and gardens are stunning for visitors from all over the world! If you visit Japan, you must have a great visit here ! You can enjoy your visual feast and feel the wonderful atmosphere out of you inner mind! As long as you’re happy and cheerful, you can take your time to relax and enjoy yourself as much as you want to! It’s worth visiting here and also bring you fantastic memories for good!

This flower garden in Biei is very impressive in terms of its expansive size and meticulous upkeep. Spread over rolling hill slopes, the flowering plants create bands of vibrant colours that are a sight to behold. My wife and I visited the garden in July and the flower blooms were fresh and beautiful. Although summer was sunny and hot, our visit was blessed with a very pleasant daytime temperature of 22℃. It was very enjoyable to stroll along the pathways, enjoy the flowers and take photos. As the garden is big, visitors can pay for transport options like tractor-pulled wagons or self-drive golf buggies. At the entrance, there is a big retail shop. Carparking is chargeable at ¥500 per entry and we had to circle around to find a vacant lot. Entry into the garden is also chargeable at ¥500 per adult. Notwithstanding the charges, the garden attracts many visitors. Although the car park was full and the entrance was crowded when we visited, the garden had a relaxing atmosphere as visitors were well spread out across its extensive grounds. In our two trips to Hokkaido, we visited Shikisai-no-Oka and both visits were memorable. It is a “must visit” flower garden.

A reason to come to Furano in itself. There are flowers planted from around April to November every year, so a good six months with varied views as the flower fields are constantly changing depending on the season. The rolling hills create many opportunities for beautiful vistas and photos. The admission fee of 500 yen is incredibly fair too. Definitely a place to visit during Spring, Summer or Autumn.

History Museums
The Asahikawa City Museum is located in the heart of the city and showcases many interesting items about Ainu culture, including traditional clothing and artifacts. The museum is relatively small, but does a good job of providing an overview of the history and culture of this indigenous group. There is unfortunately very little English translation available, so anyone who doesn't know Japanese will likely need to use Google Translate to get full comprehension. The admission price is fairly reasonable considering the amount of information on display.

Entry fee of 350 yen, probably will avoid next time
Jonathan — Google review
Good to know about history of Asahikawa and surrounding area history. If you have another museum ticket can use it for 10% discount. Almost empty visitors. Just 1 hours yo walk and read about it. 350 Yen per adult
Bee B — Google review
super insightful museum with two floors of detailed exhibitions. information is mostly in japanese but you can scan a qr code to get english translations, or just use google lens. covered everything from jomon era to modern era. highly recommended! you can purchase tickets at the counter.
Nadya M — Google review
Well maintained and beautifully structured museum. Good for 1-1:30 hr stop. No English description but can be QR scan / using translation for better understanding for the Ainu history.
Napat S — Google review
The museum is not very big, but its very informative. Worth visiting to know more about the nature and the history of the region.
Alena B — Google review
A good museum covering everything from Ainu culture and history across Hokkaido to how Hokkaido was “created” geologically with deep dives into tectonic plates etc, wildlife from fauna and flora as well as how life evolved from pre-historic to modern times. The museum is about 2 floors and can be done in about 1h if you do t ready every QR with English translation or about 2h+ if you do. It is about a 15min walk from the JR station and worth a visit
Sobren15 — Google review
I came here on a weekend in November and there were hardly any visitors. So it was as if I had the whole museum to myself. Haha. It is a relatively small museum compared to the museum in Sapporo. If you are fast, you can leave in less than an hour. This is not a standalone unlike others. This is formerly a snow crystal museum, but they converted it to a city museum. I wonder why. Since the event receives relatively few visitors, you can play in the snow outside without worrying about disturbing other people.

The exhibit of Tambo art (Art on rice fields -Asahikawa) is a beautiful sight to behold. The locals have been diligently creating these pictures for many years and it is amazing to see the level of detail and creativity that goes into them. Visitors should be very cautious when visiting the viewing platforms, as there are often dangerous cliffs nearby that can easily trap unsuspecting tourists.
The Tambo Art in Asahikawa is a visual masterpiece that keeps me coming back every year. Each visit feels like a new adventure, as the intricate designs and themes change annually, showcasing a perfect blend of creativity and agricultural ingenuity. What makes this experience special is not just the stunning artwork created from different rice varieties but also the anticipation of discovering the year’s theme. It’s incredible to see how this unique form of art transforms ordinary rice fields into vibrant canvases, celebrating culture, history, and community spirit. Visiting Tambo Art has become a cherished tradition for me, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable and unique experience in Asahikawa.

Looks like it might be cool, but we visited on September 13, and seven days ago, they closed the viewing platform for the season. I suppose the rice growing season is over….so, don’t bother outside of the season.

A very beautiful art work of padi. The blend of padi colour to create art is simply interesting. This year (2023) theme is "Hokkaido Rice". There is a viewing platform to better appreciate the scale of the art created.
