Zoo
Kakegawa Kachoen is a captivating theme park in Kakegawa city, Japan. It boasts one of the largest greenhouses in the country, where visitors can interact with birds and enjoy various flowers. The park offers bird shows, opportunities to feed the birds, and even take photos with penguins and owls. Additionally, guests can explore a water lily pond and an emu farm on the premises.
Shoebill and penguins are the highlight of the day. Only first 10 patrons can take pictures with penguins at a cost of ¥700. No more than 10 lucky person/family can enjoy this privilege. That says a lot about this zoo. They really care about the animals. Not using them as money machine. Entry fee is only about USD10. Come visit if you are in Nagoya or Mt Fuji area. You won’t regret.

I would say its for kids and alot of birds are there and you can feed them easily, you have to buy everything to feed birds.its about 100 yen /200yen

If you love birds, you'll love this place! I easily spent over 2 hours here. You can feed the birds, but the sale of food ends at 3:30 PM, so be sure to arrive before that. At 3:30 PM, the birds will get fed, so you won't be able to go close to them while they eat, but it is adorable to see them all munching down on their meal. There are bird shows as well, but the outdoor show is only once per day. Highly recommend if you love birds!
R U — Google review
There are lots of different kids of birds walking around in the place. You can feed most of them too. It was my first time to see flamingos and toucans so up close. (You know in the zoo, they're far away form you.) When I brought my 3yo, flamingos looked down on her and she got really upset. So, it might be more enjoyable for kids who are older than elementary school age. This time, my kids were 8yo and 10yo, so they had no problem. There are various activities available, such as holding cute ducks and penguins. You can also put several different kids of owls on your arms. Thankfully, they have a variety of menu at the cafeteria. They even have hamburgers, and they were pretty good. My little one went with something unique that has a shape of a bird nest. She was really happy. It's a bit far from the nearest station, so we took a taxi on our way there from Kakegawa station. We wanted to explore a bit, so we walked back to the station. We will definitely go back again.

Another beautiful city in Japan! My day at this bird park is unforgettable ❤️ I saw different varieties of birds for the first time here !! Most birds aren’t even caged so taking pictures and feeding them was so much fun 🤩
M S — Google review
I came here for the first time in 10 years! I enjoyed interacting with birds as usual! This is the place where you can see many owls, penguin shows, and flamingos up close without fences and more! This time, I paid 500 yen separately and experienced doctor fish! Both children and adults can enjoy feeding!
NH — Google review
Lovely little zoo, so many beautiful and friendly birds. Bring some cash so you can get food to feed them. The flowers in the seating area were also beautiful.
Nic L — Google review
This is a great place to visit, especially with kids! A variety of birds on display, many of which you can touch, pet and feed. It's an assault on the senses, especially the smell, but the place is quite clean and constantly being scrubbed -- especially the bird areas. The suspended flower garden entrance is enchanting, and the attached restaurant section is good for a bite or two. You get a chance to buy bird-related souvenirs on your way out. You can easily walk from the Kakegawa Station, and it's efinitely worth checking out.

Train station
Kakegawa Station is a major railway station in Shizuoka Prefecture, known for its convenient location and interesting local shops. The north exit leads to Kakegawa Castle, a beautifully restored wooden castle tower that showcases the area's history. At the south exit concourse, visitors can find a variety of local products and souvenirs unique to Shizuoka prefecture. This includes freshly baked bread and crown melons direct from the farm.
🌟 A First-Class Experience with the Shinkansen at Kakegawa Station – Beyond Expectations! My journey on the Shinkansen from Kakegawa to Hamamatsu was truly memorable—an experience I believe everyone visiting Japan should try at least once. Kakegawa Station may be modest in size, but it's incredibly clean, well-organized, and peaceful, perfectly reflecting Japanese standards. All signage is clear and includes English, and the staff are exceptionally polite and always ready to help if you have any questions. 🌟 Shinkansen – Speed and Sophistication: From the moment the train glides into the station, it's mesmerizing. Standing next to the “silver bullet” as it silently slices through the air is a thrill in itself. Inside, the cabins are immaculately clean, the seats are soft and comfortable, and the entire ride is so smooth and quiet—it genuinely rivals the business class experience on a plane. 🌟 Punctuality at Its Finest: The train arrives to the second, a true testament to Japan’s precision. You can confidently plan your schedule without worrying about delays. 🌟 Kakegawa Station – Location & Convenience: From the waiting area to the digital display boards and clearly marked signs, everything is intuitive and modern. The station is also well-connected to nearby cafés, convenience stores, and even offers direct access to a shopping area—extremely convenient for travelers. 🌟Style Meets Space: As someone passionate about design and aesthetics, I opted for a tailored suit during the trip—and I must say, the station's architecture paired with the sleek Shinkansen makes for a stunning fashion backdrop. Every photo taken here exudes a modern, refined, and confident vibe.

静岡県のメジャーな駅の一つ! One of the major railway stations in Shizuoka Prefecture! The newest Shinkansen station in Shizuoka Prefecture built to catter the World Soccer Cup. Very interesting locsl agricultural and food store inside and some tasty station bento. For the railway buffs: Kakegawa Station was first opened on April 16, 1889 when the section of the Tookaidoo Main Line connecting Shizuoka with Hamamatsu was completed. In 1935 the first section of the Tenryū Hamanako Line opened, with Kakegawa Station as its terminus. Regular freight service was discontinued in 1984. On March 13, 1988 the Tōkaidō Shinkansen platforms opened on the south side of the station. JR Kakegawa Station has five platforms serving eight tracks. The Tookaidoo Main Line Track 1 is served by a side platform connected to the main station building’s north exit and the Tenryū Hamanako Line station. It is used for departing both east and west. Track 2 and Track 3 are served by an island platform. Both platforms are connected to the station building by an underpass, which also connects to the two elevated side platforms used by the Shinkansen (Track 4 and Track 5). The north side of the station is a wooden structure dating from 1940. The station building has automated ticket machines, TOICA automated turnstiles and a manned “Green Window” service counter.

Kakegawa Castle is a picturesque castle complex located on a mountain, offering stunning views of Kakegawa city. It is renowned for being the first post-war main keep reconstructed using traditional carpentry techniques. The castle features wooden chambers, a tea room, and an ornate watchtower set within hilltop gardens. Visitors can explore the original Ninomaru Goten and enjoy Shizuoka tea in the serene garden below.
The view from the castle tower is spectacular. I am deeply moved when I imagine how the head of the family looked at this scenery at the time. The tea shop near the castle was very quaint. My business is big success.I got lot of money. Thank you for everything.

Get the combo ticket for a fun step back in time when visiting the castle. It includes access to the old buildings plus matcha tea and sweets. A really memorable experience!
Nunan H — Google review
Kakegawa Castle is a hidden gem — elegant, peaceful, and wonderfully restored. The wooden main keep stands proudly above the town, offering great views of the city and surrounding hills. Unlike some larger castles, it feels intimate and authentic, with a calm atmosphere that lets you really appreciate its history. The reconstruction was done using traditional methods, so the interior still feels like stepping back in time — wooden floors, steep staircases, and open rooms that echo with the past. The small museum nearby gives great context about the castle’s history and the local area. The surrounding gardens and paths are lovely to stroll through, and the whole site is clean, well-maintained, and easy to explore. It’s a quieter, less touristy alternative to some of Japan’s bigger castles, but every bit as beautiful. If you’re travelling through Shizuoka or between Tokyo and Kyoto, it’s definitely worth a stop — a peaceful window into Japan’s feudal past.
Darko R — Google review
Surprisingly interesting. While the castle is a reconstruction what makes this special is that the palace is original. Most of the Japanese castles no longer have the associated palace. It is well with going here if you’re in the vicinity. Be aware that all the explanations are in Japanese. We used Google translate to read them.
William K — Google review
Kakegawa Castle is a wonderfully restored historic site in Shizuoka that offers a rich and peaceful look into Japan’s samurai-era past. The main castle keep has been authentically rebuilt using traditional wooden construction techniques, giving it a distinct charm compared to the more modern reconstructions found elsewhere. Climbing to the top rewards you with sweeping views of Kakegawa city and the surrounding landscape. One of the highlights is the preserved Ni-no-Maru Palace next to the keep. This original structure lets you walk through tatami-floored rooms once used by the feudal lords, making it easy to imagine life during the Edo period. There’s also a small garden and tea house nearby where you can enjoy a quiet moment with matcha and wagashi (Japanese sweets). It’s only about a 10-minute walk from Kakegawa Station, and signage around the site is helpful even if you don’t speak Japanese. The entry fee is very reasonable, and the entire grounds are well-maintained. Whether you’re into Japanese history or just want a beautiful and calm place to explore, Kakegawa Castle is definitely worth a visit.

Beautiful castle and grounds. Admission was cheap. Lots of step steps and stairs to get to highest room, but you are rewarded with a great view.
Timothy V — Google review
Didn't see all of the grounds or museum but the garden and castle were really nice. Be ready for the stairs up to as well as inside the castle.
Shawnda K — Google review
Awesome experience and great history behind feudal Japan and how they did things. It was even more impressive on how they designed these palaces from the inside to outside and this was back in the 1400s. Very organized on how things were handled and the worst thing is that you can't take pictures of the inside of the palace, only outside.

On April 26, 2023, the Tatsuo Shrine, a Shinto shrine featured in the NHK Taiga drama Dosuru Ieyasu, was visited during a tour of its true locations. This visit provided insights into the battle between Ieyasu and Ujizane by observing the proximity of Kakegawa Castle Ruins to the shrine.
(Translated by Google) Tatsuo Shrine is located in Shimosaigo, Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is an ancient shrine that is known as a famous spot for weeping plum blossoms. It is a venerable shrine that has been enshrined on the land known as Mt. Ryūbi since ancient times and enshrines Susano no Mikoto as its deity. As it is located northeast of Kakegawa Castle in the direction of Kimon, it is said to have been deeply revered by successive castle lords as the castle's guardian deity. Benefits include warding off illness and good health, warding off evil spirits, bringing good luck, family safety, and career advancement. Once you pass through the torii gate, you can climb about 100 stone steps that are bathed in beautiful sunlight filtering through the trees, and you will find the main shrine. Although it was a small shrine overall, the shrine had a sense of history and a dignified atmosphere within its grounds, making it a shrine that was well-loved by the locals. During my recent trip to Shizuoka, I had the pleasure of dining at the Genuine Izakaya Diner "Uotami" near Kakegawa Station. Don’t let its chain store status fool you; this place offers an impressive menu that includes Peking duck! I couldn't resist ordering it, and it was a delightful experience with its sweet and spicy miso sauce. The seafood selection is also noteworthy, making it one of the best spots for food in the area.

Although the store is located at a Shinkansen station, you need to be very careful about the time. Even the special menu doesn't feel very regional. You'll have to walk a bit, but if you go to the north exit of the station, there are apparently plenty of pubs to choose from. It's a chain restaurant, so I feel safe with the menu, but other than being near the station, I didn't see any benefits. You can also rent an electric kick scooter to fly through the compact area below Kakegawa Castle in style. It seemed like the Kakegawa Grand Festival was being held, and there were food stalls and other items around the area, so it was quite crowded. The first floor sells souvenirs and the second floor seems to be a restaurant. I think the selection is pretty good. They sell original soft serve ice cream, and I like it, so I ordered it. Kakegawa matcha soft serve was delicious. (Translated by Google) We visited around 1:00 PM on a Sunday in September 2025. We made a reservation through Jalan for the "Kakegawa Tea Dorayaki Making Experience." It cost 800 yen per person. There was an eat-in area in part of the souvenir shop, so we tried making dorayaki there, using a mini stove that used solid fuel. There were five other customers, including us, making dorayaki. According to the staff, the dorayaki dough is the same as that used for taiyaki, and it's mixed with tapioca flour, making it very chewy. It was delicious, paired with the cold green tea that was served with it. I'm grateful that they even served tea for my daughter, who didn't have a reservation for the experience. We were able to make four dorayaki skins. It was quite filling. There are no chairs for children in the eat-in area, but there is a tatami space. The Kakegawa beef croquettes cost 230 yen, but the frozen food vending machine outside the store was selling them for 580 yen for three, so if you're eating them at home, the vending machine is a better deal. Soba noodle shop
Nestled in a quaint residential area near Kakegawa Castle, Masakichi is a charming family-owned restaurant steeped in history dating back to the Edo period. This hidden gem specializes in 100% buckwheat soba and offers an array of delectable tempura options, including fresh shrimp, shiitake mushrooms, eggplant, and pumpkin. Diners rave about the crispy texture of the tempura that maintains its crunchiness throughout the meal.
Great Soba and Tempura. This family-owned restaurant has some history dated back to the Edo period, and it is a hidden gem in the residential area near Kakegawa Castle. If you order tempura and soba separately, it will be slightly expensive, but if you order it as a set, it is reasonable. An ala carte tempura menu includes locally sourced produces. Very relaxing music and ambience.

(Translated by Google) The restaurant has a great atmosphere, and everything is delicious! They also have seasonal specials, so I'm always spoiled for choice. My favorites are fig tempura and mexicali tempura. The owner apparently also has sake carefully selected to pair perfectly with the soba noodles. This restaurant is sure to please even those who love alcohol. They have both table seating and tatami seating, so even families with children or large groups can easily dine on the tatami. There's parking on-site for about four cars, and a parking lot just a short walk away that can accommodate about 10 cars. The owner is always thinking about what makes his customers happy, and he has a very nice personality. Japanese restaurant
The younger sibling conducted a search and found that the restaurant "いも汁処 とろろ本丸" was easily accessible as it was not yet noon. Despite being a weekday, the establishment appeared to be deserted, allowing for immediate entry. The dishes served at this Japanese eatery consisted of delectable tororo (grated yam) and rice. It seems that many customers would indulge in substantial portions, perhaps due to their slim figures.
One of the healthiest Japanese ingredients that I love is Japanese mountain yam. We Japanese love sticky, slimy, slippery food like grated Japanese mountain yam and natto… But they are super healthy! Similar to avocado, in my opinion. When we were visiting Shizuoka, we visited a restaurant who specializes in their local Japanese mountain yam. They had a dining room on both sides of the main entrance, and I heard they have a large dining room on second floor. All the interior here is old-fashion, with tatami floor and low dining tables. They brought us complimentary hot green tea, and even though it was a hot Summer day when we visited, it still was very tasty. Nothing like a locally grown and produced, high quality green tea… On their menu, they had their top three popular lunch items. Since there were three of us, we each order the different item of the top three, so we can all try them. They had regular size and "slightly smaller" size. We all got smaller size, but they were huge and super filling! Our lunch was amazing, and we were extremely full. With the smaller size, I couldn’t finish… My hubby was stuffed too. So, unless you are a big hungry bear, I recommend getting the smaller size. Their tororo was amazing, super fresh, high quality with special flavoring was like a symphony on my tongue. The staffs were not very friendly but we’ve heard about that before we went, so we were not too surprised. They kind of leave you alone other than when they take your order and bring you food. Getting glasses of water from them was a bit of challenge, and they acted like it was such a huge request… But, we went there for their tororo, not for the great service. For that, we were very happy. Read my full review of the restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

What a truly lovely place!! We were two tired foreigners looking for a good meal and we certainly found it. トロロホンマル treated my Mum and I so well. We speak basically zero Japanese but they were so helpful and kind and generous. A warm, welcoming place that served the most delicious food. Look them up online and read their story, who knew Japanese wild yams were so versatile and interesting (and yummy - おいしかったです!!!!!) Thank you so much, トロロホンマル!! ☺️🙇‍♂️💝 from 👨‍🦰👨‍🦳♡♡

I arrived at Buji, but it was a long weekend and there was a huge traffic jam in the parking lot😨I changed my destination. Since it was around 11:00 am, I decided to have lunch first. I visited with high expectations as I was told that I would be able to get some authentic Japanese yam. It was more voluminous than I expected and filled me up. If I have a chance, I would like to visit you again. 😊

The chef and his wife warmly welcomed us as always. We sat in the tatami room and looked over the menu, wondering what to order. We decided on the kake chinese (grilled Chinese noodles) 🤗 My partner decided on the marinated tuna. Landlady, one kake chinese noodles and one marinated tuna, please. We were so excited to eat this meal after so long 🤩 Sorry to keep you waiting, landlady. It's kake chinese noodles and marinated tuna. Here it comes 🤩 Let's eat. We mixed the kake chinese noodles together 🤩 Munch, munch, it's so delicious! The sweetness of the marinated tuna, the grated yam, and the sauce all blended together, it was so delicious 👍 We ran out of noodles, so we added some barley rice to finish it off. The deep-fried toro was so delicious! 😋 After finishing my meal, I had a great time chatting with the chef and the landlady. Thank you for the meal. I'll come back for more if I have time. The parking lot is large and there is plenty of room. It was a little past lunchtime so I was able to enter the restaurant without waiting. The interior is a little old-fashioned but nice. Since I was there, I ordered their recommended grated yam lunch. The grated yam and the side dishes were delicious, and it was hard to pace my rice. I seriously needed more rice! The portion was decent too, so I was satisfied.
