Kakegawa Castle is a picturesque castle complex located on a mountain, offering stunning views of Kakegawa city. It is renowned for being the first post-war main keep reconstructed using traditional carpentry techniques. The castle features wooden chambers, a tea room, and an ornate watchtower set within hilltop gardens. Visitors can explore the original Ninomaru Goten and enjoy Shizuoka tea in the serene garden below.
The view from the castle tower is spectacular. I am deeply moved when I imagine how the head of the family looked at this scenery at the time. The tea shop near the castle was very quaint. My business is big success.I got lot of money. Thank you for everything.

Get the combo ticket for a fun step back in time when visiting the castle. It includes access to the old buildings plus matcha tea and sweets. A really memorable experience!
Nunan H — Google review
Kakegawa Castle is a hidden gem — elegant, peaceful, and wonderfully restored. The wooden main keep stands proudly above the town, offering great views of the city and surrounding hills. Unlike some larger castles, it feels intimate and authentic, with a calm atmosphere that lets you really appreciate its history. The reconstruction was done using traditional methods, so the interior still feels like stepping back in time — wooden floors, steep staircases, and open rooms that echo with the past. The small museum nearby gives great context about the castle’s history and the local area. The surrounding gardens and paths are lovely to stroll through, and the whole site is clean, well-maintained, and easy to explore. It’s a quieter, less touristy alternative to some of Japan’s bigger castles, but every bit as beautiful. If you’re travelling through Shizuoka or between Tokyo and Kyoto, it’s definitely worth a stop — a peaceful window into Japan’s feudal past.
Darko R — Google review
I visited Kakegawa Castle, and it was such a beautiful and peaceful place! 🏯✨ The view from the top of the castle is amazing — you can see the whole city and the surrounding mountains. The castle itself is well-maintained and full of history. I really felt the traditional atmosphere of Japan while walking around the area. Perfect spot for history lovers and for anyone who wants to relax and enjoy scenic views. 🌸
Ralph M — Google review
Surprisingly interesting. While the castle is a reconstruction what makes this special is that the palace is original. Most of the Japanese castles no longer have the associated palace. It is well with going here if you’re in the vicinity. Be aware that all the explanations are in Japanese. We used Google translate to read them.
William K — Google review
Kakegawa Castle is a wonderfully restored historic site in Shizuoka that offers a rich and peaceful look into Japan’s samurai-era past. The main castle keep has been authentically rebuilt using traditional wooden construction techniques, giving it a distinct charm compared to the more modern reconstructions found elsewhere. Climbing to the top rewards you with sweeping views of Kakegawa city and the surrounding landscape. One of the highlights is the preserved Ni-no-Maru Palace next to the keep. This original structure lets you walk through tatami-floored rooms once used by the feudal lords, making it easy to imagine life during the Edo period. There’s also a small garden and tea house nearby where you can enjoy a quiet moment with matcha and wagashi (Japanese sweets). It’s only about a 10-minute walk from Kakegawa Station, and signage around the site is helpful even if you don’t speak Japanese. The entry fee is very reasonable, and the entire grounds are well-maintained. Whether you’re into Japanese history or just want a beautiful and calm place to explore, Kakegawa Castle is definitely worth a visit.

Didn't see all of the grounds or museum but the garden and castle were really nice. Be ready for the stairs up to as well as inside the castle.
Shawnda K — Google review
Awesome experience and great history behind feudal Japan and how they did things. It was even more impressive on how they designed these palaces from the inside to outside and this was back in the 1400s. Very organized on how things were handled and the worst thing is that you can't take pictures of the inside of the palace, only outside.

Train station
Kakegawa Station is a major railway station in Shizuoka Prefecture, known for its convenient location and interesting local shops. The north exit leads to Kakegawa Castle, a beautifully restored wooden castle tower that showcases the area's history. At the south exit concourse, visitors can find a variety of local products and souvenirs unique to Shizuoka prefecture. This includes freshly baked bread and crown melons direct from the farm.
🌟 A First-Class Experience with the Shinkansen at Kakegawa Station – Beyond Expectations! My journey on the Shinkansen from Kakegawa to Hamamatsu was truly memorable—an experience I believe everyone visiting Japan should try at least once. Kakegawa Station may be modest in size, but it's incredibly clean, well-organized, and peaceful, perfectly reflecting Japanese standards. All signage is clear and includes English, and the staff are exceptionally polite and always ready to help if you have any questions. 🌟 Shinkansen – Speed and Sophistication: From the moment the train glides into the station, it's mesmerizing. Standing next to the “silver bullet” as it silently slices through the air is a thrill in itself. Inside, the cabins are immaculately clean, the seats are soft and comfortable, and the entire ride is so smooth and quiet—it genuinely rivals the business class experience on a plane. 🌟 Punctuality at Its Finest: The train arrives to the second, a true testament to Japan’s precision. You can confidently plan your schedule without worrying about delays. 🌟 Kakegawa Station – Location & Convenience: From the waiting area to the digital display boards and clearly marked signs, everything is intuitive and modern. The station is also well-connected to nearby cafés, convenience stores, and even offers direct access to a shopping area—extremely convenient for travelers. 🌟Style Meets Space: As someone passionate about design and aesthetics, I opted for a tailored suit during the trip—and I must say, the station's architecture paired with the sleek Shinkansen makes for a stunning fashion backdrop. Every photo taken here exudes a modern, refined, and confident vibe.

One of the major railway stations in Shizuoka Prefecture! The newest Shinkansen station in Shizuoka Prefecture built to catter the World Soccer Cup. Very interesting locsl agricultural and food store inside and some tasty station bento. For the railway buffs: Kakegawa Station was first opened on April 16, 1889 when the section of the Tookaidoo Main Line connecting Shizuoka with Hamamatsu was completed. In 1935 the first section of the Tenryū Hamanako Line opened, with Kakegawa Station as its terminus. Regular freight service was discontinued in 1984. On March 13, 1988 the Tōkaidō Shinkansen platforms opened on the south side of the station. JR Kakegawa Station has five platforms serving eight tracks. The Tookaidoo Main Line Track 1 is served by a side platform connected to the main station building’s north exit and the Tenryū Hamanako Line station. It is used for departing both east and west. Track 2 and Track 3 are served by an island platform. Both platforms are connected to the station building by an underpass, which also connects to the two elevated side platforms used by the Shinkansen (Track 4 and Track 5). The north side of the station is a wooden structure dating from 1940. The station building has automated ticket machines, TOICA automated turnstiles and a manned “Green Window” service counter.

The Kakegawa Stained Glass Museum is a delightful venue showcasing antique stained-glass windows from England and France. It is the second museum of its kind in Japan, and visitors with a Kakegawa passport can enter for free. Along with admiring well-preserved stained glass, guests can also learn about the art form's history and production methods. Despite its relatively small size, this museum provides an enjoyable sensory experience as sunlight pours through resplendent rounded glass on the west side.
I thought this would just be a modern art gallery of stained glass. So I was happily surprised to find authentic stained glass recovered from old English homes and personal chapels. In the pieces dealing with Biblical content, it was interesting to see the symbolism embedded in the details of the glass. I walked away with a better understanding of how stained glass was used as the "Poor Man's Bible."

(Translated by Google) Admission fee is 500 yen per person. I thought it was a little expensive. The inside of the museum is small, but there were many stained glass pieces on display from the entrance to the back. It seems to be quite old, but it was in very good condition. I felt very beautiful and wonderful. Touching the works is prohibited. Photography is allowed and I took many photos. If this is your only goal, it may be a little unsatisfactory. It would be a good idea to visit Kakegawa Castle, the Imperial Palace, and the Ninomaru Museum of Art.

(Translated by Google) The stained glass was beautiful. However, considering the small size, I'd like to charge 300 or 500 yen for coffee... It seems a bit out of proportion to the price. (^_^;) For 500 yen for something this spacious, it might be better to go see the stained glass in a church.

Takatenjin Castle Ruins is a formidable mountain fortress that witnessed intense conflicts between the Takeda and Tokugawa armies during the 16th century. The hiking trails leading to the ruins are well-maintained, and visitors can easily imagine themselves in ancient times with informative boards scattered around. A trip to nearby castles such as Yokosuka Castle and Kakegawa Castle is recommended for an immersive experience of Japan's rich history.

Mari H — Google review
(Translated by Google) I'd like to start by saying that I was very happy when Tamori-san said something like "It's the basics" when introducing the diorama of Takatenjin Castle in the Tamori Club. My first time climbing the castle was on a bus trip in elementary school. The teachers at that time made a very reluctant decision. Naturally, it was too difficult for elementary school students and it ended up being just a hike, but I was a tomboy at the time, but I had a foundation for loving castles, and I talked enthusiastically about it with one of the smartest kids in the world. When I became an adult, I used to visit the castle every year in early March to build up my physical strength. I hiked with such a light-hearted feeling from the eastern peak where the main castle is located to the highest peak of the western peak where Takatenjin Shrine is located. In fact, from the area around Ninomaru, down the western ridge, the best civil engineering technology of the time is preserved in the best condition, like a textbook on mountain castles, with Takeda castle building techniques galore. It is a treasure-like space for mountain castle lovers. On the other hand, the area is a little more difficult due to the many defensive irregularities, so if you are not confident in your physical strength, you should not push yourself. This is as far as I went, climbing from the Otemon Gate, but due to time constraints I cut out the round trip from the back gate side and the area where Takeda rode horseback along the ridge to convey news of the fall of the castle to Kai. So I took my time going around, taking about an hour and a half. Even so, I was surprised to pass by someone even in the evening, when I used to not meet anyone. There were many cars with license plates from other prefectures, and I realized once again that castles are really booming (lol).

(Translated by Google) While it's not a particularly famous mountain castle, there's quite a lot to see and it really left the impression of being a mountain castle. There are two parking lots, one at the north entrance and one at the south entrance, but I recommend the north entrance, as it has more parking spaces and wider stairs. Of course, the castle itself is no longer there, but remnants of the original site remain everywhere, and when I climbed to the ruins of the castle tower, I was impressed, realizing that building a mountain castle here made sense. While the grounds are fairly well maintained, there are still some slippery patches due to fallen leaves and stones, so sneakers are a good choice. There are also toilets and benches scattered around, so you can take your time exploring. I spent a little over an hour exploring the area. It seems there's also a history of the battle for Takatenjin Castle, and history buffs were excited. But even if you don't know much history, I think you'll enjoy it.

(Translated by Google) There are several large parking lots and toilets, making sightseeing easy. It's an incredible mountain castle, and not as tiring as Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, but the stairs were quite steep. I was surprised to see a sacred carp in the crescent well along the way. It hid inside the tube, though. From the remains of the main citadel, the view of the tea fields below was spectacular. I'm glad I came. 10 million ryo was donated to Lord Motonobu. I was also surprised to find a water tank and drinking faucet. I sprayed some water on the castle soldiers to keep them thirsty, and then turned off the faucet.

(Translated by Google) A must-visit for mountain castle lovers! Not only is it home to the history of the numerous battles between the Tokugawa and Takeda, but it is also full of charm as a mountain castle. I entered from the back entrance, and on the way there was a small crescent-shaped pool-like pond with a rope stretched across it, and for some reason there was only one goldfish in it. Once you reach the ridge, the mountain castle becomes quite labyrinthine. In the area of the main enclosure, there is a stone cave where loyal samurai stayed, the main enclosure and several other enclosures, and there are also spots with good views. From the well on the pass, visit the Nishinomaru (Takatenjin Shrine) and then head into the intricate group of enclosures. If you can navigate the narrow paths and enclosures with moats and vertical moats well, you will have made a complete loop. It is truly a maze, and it is exciting. Once you return to the well, it is only a short distance down to the back entrance. If you take your time and enjoy the highlights, it will take about 1.5 hours. A very good score. If you download the AR at the foot of the mountain onto your smartphone and scan it at various points, you can enjoy imaginary images that recreate what it was like at the time.

Awagatake, a majestic mountain peak, can be reached by car through a narrow road that is divided into separate up and down time zones. It is crucial to heed these divisions in order to avoid getting stuck in a difficult situation. Once at the top, one can enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the surroundings. The sight of Mt.Fuji may sometimes appear slightly blurred or hazy but still adds to the beauty of this remarkable location.

The road is narrow, but it's not a problem for bikes and cars. There is a shelter even by car, so if you use it wisely, you can get to the top of the mountain without stress. Please be careful as there is a hiking course along the way. There is a parking lot where you can park more than 10 cars right after you go up, but if you are driving a motorcycle, we recommend parking at the observation deck one level above. If it's sunny, you can see the spectacular view You can buy the famous black curry and drinks at the kapposhi at the bottom of the observation deck, and you can also get a stamp from the Awa Shrine just above. (Translated by Google) The highest peak in the Makinohara area (532m above sea level) offers a 180-degree panoramic view from Enshu Kakegawa to Shida Yaizu, Fujieda, and Shimada. Around 2018, the teahouse and observation deck at the top of the mountain was renovated and has become extremely beautiful. Personally, I have visited many times since I was a child, and recently I have been visiting occasionally when I have time when I return home. The last time was a few years ago, so there was an increase in the number of trekkers and cyclists, changes in the social situation after the coronavirus pandemic, guides at the trailhead and summit who were assigned during the busy season, and the number of people entering the mountain by car. The changes in the time zones for getting off, etc., and the renewal of the teahouses were truly amazing. . Although it can't compete with Oshiro's jumbo zodiac, a large tiger zodiac decoration was made, and the food menu served was delicious. Although the front side (Higashiyama area on the south slope) seems to be undergoing improvements, the mountain trail on the back side (Kurama area on the north slope) remains as it was around 1985, with many falling rocks and a rough road surface. On the Kurama side, the road is barely wide enough for a light vehicle. There are not many shelters, so depending on where you are, you may have to back up several tens of meters of dangerous narrow mountain roads. The close encounters can be too tiring for those of a generation used to modern roads and those with wide vehicles, so I don't recommend it to anyone other than those who are used to local roads. We recommend climbing from the Higashiyama area on the southern slope of the mountain.

Ninomaru Tea House is located within the premises of Kakegawa Castle, a beautifully restored wooden castle tower in Japan. The tea house offers visitors the chance to enjoy traditional Japanese tea service in a serene and welcoming atmosphere. The castle itself boasts historical buildings such as Kakegawa Castle Palace and Takenomaru, adding to the cultural experience. Additionally, on select Sundays, visitors can even encounter tour guides dressed as ninjas.
Nice place serving Wagashi and tea in a tea ceremony style. It is very calm and the view is awesome. They showed us around the place too!

Nice place to enjoy a green tea in very calm and cozy atmosphere. You spent 15 minutes up to 30minutes in this tea house. The great thing is, beside they already prepared tea, the view into the garden, the greens, the water. It is totally relaxing and invites you for small meditation unit. I missed the tea ceremony, therefore 4 out of 5 stars.
Michael S — Google review
When we visited Kakegawa Castle while our trip to Shizuoka, we visited their Japanese Tea Room on the premises. Kakegawa Castle was originally built about 500 years ago. However, most of the castle was destroyed in the big earthquake of 1854. It was rebuilt in 1944, and it was the first castle Japan to be rebuilt with wood. Ninomaru Tea Room was also built with wood, in 2002, one story, traditional house. The Tea Room is sitting right by the Kakegawa Castle Tower, you have a beautiful view of the tower from there. Blue sky, green grass and trees, and the castle, perfect scenery for an afternoon tea. The main tea room is in the back, with large windows that overlooks their peaceful garden. It is such a beautiful setting with the greenery outside against red carpet. The windows are all around the room, so that the view of the garden can be enjoyed from any and all seats. In the middle of the room was where the tea is made, it is quite interesting to be at a real Japanese tea ceremony to see them work. We were not here for any kind of tea ceremony event, so that was not done in front of us, but we still got to taste their tea and sweets. We were all given a Japanese confectionery of a purple flower, and sencha green tea. After we took our time enjoying the tea, we walked around its garden and relaxed some more. It was such as treat during our visit to the castle. While taking in its history and detailed reconstruction and architecture of it, it is good to have a little down time to take it all in. Read my full review of this tea room on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

(Translated by Google) What I was looking forward to even more than the castle tower was the tea room. Apparently, seven-time champion Fujii played his O-sho match in this room. It was hot and humid, so the view of the garden from the air-conditioned tea room was amazing. The matcha was from Kakegawa's proud tea shop, Kimikura, and the nerikiri was from a Japanese confectionery shop in the city, and both were absolutely delicious and lived up to my expectations. The hospitality of the staff here was also wonderful, and while a visit here alone costs 510 yen, the castle set ticket costs 960 yen, so I recommend getting the set ticket. Shimizu House Garden is a surprising gem, considering it's part of a private residence. The garden offers serene views with graceful koi swimming in the pond and a pavilion for relaxation. During autumn, the foliage adds to the beauty of the garden. While admission is free, there's an option to enjoy matcha tea with Japanese sweets at Yusuitei for a fee. The garden used to belong to a shipping wholesaler and still retains its charm today.

(Translated by Google) Founded in 1872, Shiseido is credited with elevating its brand image and the advertising that represents it to the level of culture and art. Here you can see its history and many of its works (it's actually a product, but it's more appropriate to call it that). While Suntory, the leading figure in the Western advertising world, developed advertisements through the hands of star creators such as Ken Kaiko and Hitomi Yamaguchi, Shiseido in the East discovered star models such as Minari Maeda, Kimie Shingyoji, and Sayoko Yamaguchi, and in the past, There was even a play performed by the beauty staff, and I think the focus was on ``how to present''. They are so thorough that they have created their own font called the "Shiseido typeface." It is also used as the nameplate (?) on the entrance wall here. When you enter, you will see product packages and containers from the Meiji era to the present. What's amazing is that even though this product is over 100 years old, it doesn't feel old at all. Good design is universal, regardless of trends. There is also an art house (museum) next door. The Art House was designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, a modernist architect who also designed the new building of MoMA, and although it opened in 1979, almost 40 years ago, it has a timeless feel. This is also the same as the product. In other words, this facility itself is located on the same axis as many products, and it probably represents the identity of Shiseido as a company. At the Kasuisai Temple, sure it is not as big as the others, but it has its own small charm for a New Years rites visit. It even has a nice doll festival museum which is worth visiting at least once. But what makes this interesting is the Monk Chef. He apparently is famous and his face is all over every ice cream and cuisine he has to do with. I wondered who this man was, but found an old individual selling udon under a tent which is simple but good that I eat every year there. IT WAS HIM! never realized it until now. Let's make this nice old man famous! Humble but skilled, doesnt draw attention to himself selling udon under a tent, but one should shake his hand. I will from now on.

It's quite a nice place but so expensive. Far too expensive for what it is, plus the parking is 500yen on top of the 1100yen each entry fee. Go down the road a bit and use the 300 yen parking instead

(Translated by Google) I visited on July 2nd. It took about 3 hours to get there from Yokohama Machida Interchange, including breaks. I think the highway toll was about 5,500 yen. It's about 20 minutes on the general road after getting off at Fukuroi Interchange. There are several parking lots, but the closest one is 500 yen, and the furthest one is 100 yen. If you're going to the neighboring Kasui-sai, it's better to park in a faraway place. It's only about a 5-minute walk to the garden. Here's a word of caution! This year's flowers will end on July 6th (according to the website). They seem to be at the end of their season, but thanks to the care, they are in full bloom. Speaking of lilies, their scent is also great, and it's the best! The great thing about this garden is that you can enjoy it from various perspectives, such as looking up or down from the slope. There are places where the flowers are planted in mixed and single colors. The photos that everyone has uploaded are beautiful, but they are even more amazing in person. Please go and see them. Next, I want to go to the hydrangeas in Kaisei-cho, Kanagawa, and the sunflowers in Akeno-mura, Yamanashi. I hope this helps you. Have a nice trip! (Translated by Google) We visited the garden on June 15th. Heavy rain until the morning caused damage to many of the plants and flowers, so we will probably have to wait for the buds to bloom around the weekend. Today it seemed like the flowers were just holding on, but they were very beautiful. I trusted the weather forecast and arrived from Kanagawa at 9am, aiming to arrive after the rain, but there were about 30 people ahead of me and we were able to look around at our own pace. I was overwhelmed by the number of plants and the size of the garden, and the colorful flowers, including the hydrangeas, made for a beautiful sight. My daughter insisted on going because it is set on the hill where those flowers bloom, but if the timing is right I will definitely visit Kasuisai for the lilies and Hinamatsuri. Despite the long journey from JR station, visiting the organic kiwifruit farm known as Kiwi Fruit Country Japan proved to be a worthwhile experience. The friendly and knowledgeable farm-guide, fluent in English, made the visit enjoyable. Though the kiwifruit harvest season had ended, visitors were able to indulge in various types of kiwifruits as part of the all-you-can-eat offering included in the admission fee.
Amazing experience. We did the full tea picking and making experience, which is well worth the price. The owner led us through how to pick the tea and what to look for to get the right part of the plant. Next, we spent ~1 hour drying our tea by hand and learning about his history, the farms' history, and expert tips to dry the tea correctly. Afterward, we got to eat as many kiwis as we liked, while watching a few animals roam through the covered kiwi greenhouse. Although it was very rainy when we were there, it was an unforgettable experience. Everyone was warm, welcoming, and patient with us as we mainly spoke English. High recommend if in the area.

Organically grown kiwi farm spanning across 14 hectares, kiwi and Persimmon plantation in 7-8 hectares. There are 85 varieties of KIWI. Its first of its kind plantation of Kiwi in Japan, owner has took training in California and returned to Japan for kiwi farming. Note they don’t export kiwi as export requires spraying the fruits to avoid probable insects transmission, owner doesn’t want their fruits to be sprayed as it losses organic purpose . If one is in Hamamatsu this place must be included in itinerary.

Koshi san has a beautiful farm and we could not have had more fun during our visit! He took us on a quick walking tour up to pick green tea leaves, sharing the history of the farm and the varieties of kiwi they grow (in English), and then back to the covered area for an amazing barbecue. They were so kind and welcoming to us and our kids, and the food was bountiful and incredibly delicious. This is a really special place, whimsical and lovely in all the right ways. Though it took quite some time to get to this organic farm from JR station, visiting this organic kiwifruit farm was definitely worth our while. The farm-guide was remarkably friendly, knowledgeable, and fluent in English. Even though the harvest season for kiwi-fruits was over, we could eat several kinds of kiwi-fruits (all-you-could-eat, which was included in the admission fee)! This farm also grows tangerines, persimmons, Japanese tea and has a mini-hiking trail. If you can afford spending 2-3 hours in this place, just do it!

Yokosuka Castle, located in Kakegawa, was originally built in the 1470s by Asahina Yasuhiro and later reconstructed by Tokugawa Ieyasu's vassal Oosuga Yasutaka in 1578. The castle played a significant role during the Warring States period and served as a base for conquering Takatenjin Castle.

(Translated by Google) There is one parking lot on the south side of the main enclosure and one on the west side (restrooms are available). The staircases and other areas are made of concrete. It has a strong impression of being a historical park rather than a castle ruin. The cobblestone walls made from Oi River are unique. I guess it can't be helped, but concrete is used for the connections. Zannen. The ruins are easy to understand. Are the places where Ninomaru would have been preserved in a wide area? Susukino was spreading. If you go a little to the south, you can easily see the remains of the outer moat from that time. It is interesting to see that the former highway is now a public motorway. There are a fair amount of ruins left, so I want to take a leisurely walk while imagining what it was like back then! Right in front of you is an inlet that can be accessed by large ships? Minato? It's hard to believe that it was. There is quite a distance to the current coastline! Earthquakes are scary, even if some areas have been reclaimed. . Apparently there was also a cove on the south side of Takatenjin Castle, which is right in front of you. It would have been very useful for supplies and trade, and it would have also been an impregnable castle that took advantage of the natural topography. It's a very quiet town and you hardly see any cars or neighbors. The view of the Enshu Sea from the main enclosure is amazing and there are no benches. It might be nice to sit on the stone wall and have lunch. I've never seen anything like that before, but I'm sure there are some people who would like to eat at the castle ruins! It looks like it's barely okay 👍 (Original)

(Translated by Google) Although there is no castle tower or turret, I still think it's worth visiting this castle ruins if you have the chance. It's said to be a castle built by Ieyasu in preparation for his battle against the Takeda clan. The stone walls are very distinctive and you won't see them anywhere else. What's the stone stacking method called? Is it round stone stacking or boulder stacking? I've seen many stone walls, but I've never seen one that uses round stones so thoroughly. A normal stone wall would use "sanki-zumi" (stone stacking), where larger stones are stacked alternately to reinforce the corners, but here all we have are round stones, so the corners are rounded. The stone material is the same as other castles, with most being metamorphic rock. I think the rest is andesite and other rocks. Oigawa Railway Co., Ltd. is a charming railway company that operates the only steam locomotive in Shizuoka Prefecture, making it a must-visit for train enthusiasts and families alike. The journey begins at Shin-Kanaya Station, where visitors can catch a glimpse of the beloved Thomas train without needing to enter the platform. This station serves as both a starting point and gathering place during special events featuring Thomas.
The kindness of the staffs here almost brought me to tears. I came here alone with my two boys, a toddler and a preschooler, to ride Thomas the Train to Day Out with Thomas at Senzu Station. Thanks to the staff, we were able to have a fantastic day despite my limited Japanese and the big fat stroller. We had a tight connection to make between Kanaya and Shin Kanaya station (where you get on Thomas) and the staff at Plaza Loco were kind enough to help me store some luggage so that I don't have to carry it with me to Senzu Station. When we got back, I almost forgot to pick up those luggage and had already boarded a train bound for Kanaya station. The station master was kind enough to make the train waited for me as I dashed back into Plaza Loco to retrieve my luggage and climb back on board. For a country where punctuality is in their DNA and trains can't even be late for a minute, I have no words to describe how touched and grateful I am for all that they did for me and my sons. We had a fantastic time and would definitely come back again! Thank you!

It seems there's parking nearby when you ride Thomas, which is convenient for families with small children. Limited edition Thomas merchandise was available for purchase on board, and PayPay was accepted. I got it. Ice cream is cash only. Ieyama's Sakura Tunnel, located in Kawanecho, Shimada City, is a breathtaking destination renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms. This picturesque natural tunnel stretches approximately one kilometer along the Oigawa Railway, creating a magical atmosphere as historic steam locomotives glide through rows of vibrant pink blooms. Visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while enjoying local treats like Kawane tea and dried shiitake mushrooms from nearby vendors.
(Translated by Google) Visited on 2023.4.2. The cherry blossoms were almost scattered, and the buds of the wisteria flowers were peeking out. Still, there were a lot of people coming, and some people were waiting in the parking lot. At this time of year, the parking lot has a surprising flow of traffic, so if you wait, you'll be able to park. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, it's probably so popular that you might have to wait for a space. There will be a staff member at the entrance to the parking lot who will direct you. It's free. Although the scale of the cherry blossom festival is small, there are benches and tables, so you can buy some dumplings and enjoy viewing the cherry blossoms there. If you just watch it, it will take about 30 minutes. The cherry blossoms themselves are not lined with cherry blossom trees all the way up to this point, but rather they are concentrated near this cherry blossom tunnel. I think it's better to have a small image. Steam locomotives sometimes pass by, so if you're looking for a good photo opportunity, it's best to check the time accordingly. There are shops selling local vegetables, tea, and dumplings 🍡 (Original) 2023.4.2訪問しました。

I was thinking, "I can't get in, I can't get in," when I saw a car going uphill, so I followed it and was able to get in! The construction cost of the temple gate is about 490 million yen. It is a nationally designated important cultural property, and if you donate, your name will be written on the temple gate. There is a "pebbles" that appears in the lyrics of the national anthem "Kimigayo." It is a rare stone that is a power stone and is said to improve luck and ward off evil spirits. There is a long-leafed plant called "Ryūsetsuran" that blooms once every 60 years. It was so strange that I was shocked. There is also an interesting Jizo called "Drinking Jizo." There are many empty sake jars, and it is a Jizo who is quite a drunkard. Kakegawa Kachoen is a captivating theme park in Kakegawa city, Japan. It boasts one of the largest greenhouses in the country, where visitors can interact with birds and enjoy various flowers. The park offers bird shows, opportunities to feed the birds, and even take photos with penguins and owls. Additionally, guests can explore a water lily pond and an emu farm on the premises.
Shoebill and penguins are the highlight of the day. Only first 10 patrons can take pictures with penguins at a cost of ¥700. No more than 10 lucky person/family can enjoy this privilege. That says a lot about this zoo. They really care about the animals. Not using them as money machine. Entry fee is only about USD10. Come visit if you are in Nagoya or Mt Fuji area. You won’t regret.

If you love birds, you'll love this place! I easily spent over 2 hours here. You can feed the birds, but the sale of food ends at 3:30 PM, so be sure to arrive before that. At 3:30 PM, the birds will get fed, so you won't be able to go close to them while they eat, but it is adorable to see them all munching down on their meal. There are bird shows as well, but the outdoor show is only once per day. Highly recommend if you love birds!

There are lots of different kids of birds walking around in the place. You can feed most of them too. It was my first time to see flamingos and toucans so up close. (You know in the zoo, they're far away form you.) When I brought my 3yo, flamingos looked down on her and she got really upset. So, it might be more enjoyable for kids who are older than elementary school age. This time, my kids were 8yo and 10yo, so they had no problem. There are various activities available, such as holding cute ducks and penguins. You can also put several different kids of owls on your arms. Thankfully, they have a variety of menu at the cafeteria. They even have hamburgers, and they were pretty good. My little one went with something unique that has a shape of a bird nest. She was really happy. It's a bit far from the nearest station, so we took a taxi on our way there from Kakegawa station. We wanted to explore a bit, so we walked back to the station. We will definitely go back again.

This is a great place to visit, especially with kids! A variety of birds on display, many of which you can touch, pet and feed. It's an assault on the senses, especially the smell, but the place is quite clean and constantly being scrubbed -- especially the bird areas. The suspended flower garden entrance is enchanting, and the attached restaurant section is good for a bite or two. You get a chance to buy bird-related souvenirs on your way out. You can easily walk from the Kakegawa Station, and it's efinitely worth checking out.

The Shinto shrine Kotono Mamahachimangu is a place that evokes a sense of wonder. The sight of the immense, upright sacred tree is awe-inspiring. Visitors are compelled to purchase candles, drawn in by the allure of this holy site. Despite prior research, many choose to begin their exploration at the main shrine, carefully wiping clean the white stone with their own tissue paper.

(Translated by Google) I visited on a solo trip. Ever since I saw Tsurube-san visit there on a TV program, it was a place I'd always wanted to go. This time, right after visiting Kotonoha Hachiman-gu Shrine, something very happy happened, perhaps by coincidence, and I'd like to go back again someday to give thanks. After getting off the Shinkansen, it's about a 20-minute bus ride from Kakegawa Station. (※The number of buses is very low, about once every two hours, so it's essential to do some research beforehand! If you get off at the "Kotonomama Hachiman Shrine" bus stop, it's right in front of you. It was a weekday after Golden Week, so it was pretty empty and I was able to take my time worshiping. As this shrine also appears in The Pillow Book, the grounds have a very historic feel to them. Locals are visiting the shrine while out for a walk, and there are rice fields right in front of you, giving the grounds a refreshing atmosphere. The main shrine and main hall are across the road, but you should first worship at the main hall. There are "Fukunokami" (gifts of good fortune) available at the shrine office, so I took one. When I visited, the front staircase leading to the main hall was undergoing construction due to deterioration;; After worshiping at the main hall, the sacred cedar tree, and the rest of the shrine, I crossed the footbridge and headed to the main hall. To the shrine. Counting from the main shrine entrance, we climbed 272 steps on a mountain path. The dirt was rough and each step was narrow, so I recommend wearing sneakers! I'm used to climbing uphill stairs, and I reached the shrine in about 6-7 minutes. At the "Fukunokami" shrine, we polished the stones and made a wish. Maybe because everyone was polishing them, all the white stones were shiny. We returned to the main shrine and went to the dragon god's shrine behind it. On the way, we passed by the tea fields, and went down the stairs to Sakasakawa and Ryujin Shrine, where we paid our respects. We returned to the main shrine and placed our hands on a large camphor tree to pay our respects. The fresh greenery in the shrine grounds was so beautiful, and we felt a very warm power. If you walk along the railroad tracks from the station, you won't find the atmosphere of a factory site, and you will see a museum, an art house, and several objects sitting quietly in the park. The museum was closed this time, so we entered the Auto House and took a walk around it. At the art house, for a limited time, there was an exhibition of various works that would decorate the dining and tea tables. In addition to individual items being displayed, there were also places where items such as vessels were placed and displayed to suit each situation. Personally, I was impressed by the fact that the corners, which would normally be rounded, were rounded. It is a vase with a bamboo insect cage and white and transparent parts that seem to grow upwards. There were also other items with extremely detailed workmanship and unique shapes, but these two items stood out to me this time. There is a parking lot. I think there was also a bicycle parking lot. I think it's better to check the opening dates in advance. it's not a huge place but able to spend an hour or two here. a huge indoor flower greenhouse, where there's a lot of flowers planted, very colourful. although it's quite humid and slippery inside, be careful when you walk and while taking photos. there's also an area for ducks, a bit smelly but it's expected, ducks were very cute there. another highlight was the owl, they didn't fall asleep when i visited so i was able to watch them (and they watch me). here's great for photos afterall and good for kids to come and learn about flowers and birds. a pity that the day i visited was very rainy so wasn't able to go out to the pond and look further. anyway happy experience.

Yokosuka Castle Ruin Park is a fascinating historical site that offers a glimpse into Japan's Sengoku period, particularly the rivalry between the Takeda and Tokugawa clans. Built by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a strategic defense against Takeda Katsuyori, this castle was pivotal in controlling the Enshu region. Visitors can marvel at its distinctive stone walls, crafted from cobblestones and stones sourced from the Oi River.
Although the castle is gone, the stone walls are very unique and the model shows how great this castle once was.

It is said that whoever controls Takatenjin Castle will control Enshu, and it was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in preparation for Takeda Katsuyori's attack on Takatenjin Castle. The stone wall, which was rebuilt with cobblestones, is unique and has an unusual shape, but it is said that stones brought from the lower reaches of the Oi River were used. Due to its location and close proximity to the sea, cobblestones may have been used as part of the stone walls during the Sengoku period. As it is a national historic site, it has been well maintained, and traces of the foundation stones remain. It is said that until the Hoei earthquake, there was an inlet near the castle, and Yokosuka Minato was the base for water transportation. There weren't many people visiting, but since it's one of Tokugawa Ieyasu's precious Hirayama castles and is near Takatenjin Castle, I decided to stop by. It is maintained as a park and has a parking lot. Unless there are people in groups, it won't be crowded, so you can feel safe going even during the coronavirus pandemic. You must enter the museum by 4:30 p.m. Please be careful of that. In the precincts is the grave of Geisbert Hemmy, the head of a Dutch trading post in the late Edo period. During his visit to Edo, his chronic illness worsened and he passed away while staying at the main camp in Kakegawa City. There are no details about this person on the information board or on the city's website, so I'll leave the information I know as a memo. Born in Cape Hope, Africa. In 1792, he became the director of Dejima Trading Post. Visited Edo in 1960 and 1992. After visiting the capital for the second time and having an audience with the 11th Shogun Ienari Tokugawa, he died in Kakegawa. There was a donation from the Netherlands for the maintenance of the grave, and it seems that successive trading directors visited the grave on their visits to Edo. On a personal note, when I visited the Nagasaki History Museum, I saw a photo of this place posted there, and I remember being able to learn about local information while being far away in Nagasaki, which left a lasting impression on me. For mothers with children between the ages of 0 and 3, we recommend heading to the back right from the park entrance! There is a collection of play equipment for small children. Centered on complex play equipment with a slide, there are also animal objects, spring play equipment, seesaws, and more. There is also a lot of play equipment that you can spin around. The height of the play equipment here is low, so I think it would be a good idea for children who are not used to playing with play equipment to give it a try. There are clean restrooms and vending machines nearby, so you can play for a long time while taking breaks. To the left is a multi-purpose restroom with a wheelchair-accessible restroom and a diaper-changing table. The toilet is ostomate compatible. There's a grassy field next door, so it's a good place to bring lunch or snacks and relax. There is also a table, chairs and a place for shade. Perfect for a break. In the foreground, there is a lot of play equipment that children of elementary school age and older can play with. Although it is currently under construction, a new indoor playground called ``Mirocco'' is scheduled to open in July 2025 within the ``Tamarina'' facility. A cafe is also available for adults to enjoy. The heated pool is also scheduled to be renovated, and there will also be an area where small children can play indoors. It looks like it will be completed by this summer vacation. I'm looking forward to it. (Translated by Google) Enter the road to the right of the front stairs (closer to the bridge) and there is a parking lot on your right. To the left of the front stairs is an old Japanese chinquapin (I think) tree, and to the right are a Japanese oak tree and an enoki tree growing close together. Enoki trees are tall and have impressive branches. I saw it as the largest tree in this precinct. The main hall of Zenkoji Temple is old and slightly tilted, but the stone wall around the entrance gives it an elegant feel. The history of Zenkoji Temple is unknown, but it has been said since the Edo period that this Amida Buddha was the guardian deity of Sakanoue Tamuramaro, a military commander active in the Heian period. Currently, only the Amida-do Hall stands within the grounds of Chudo-ji Temple. (Translated by Google) It seems that the predecessor of the current Chudo-ji Temple was Zenko-ji Temple, but no detailed records seem to remain. Eventually, Tendai sect? Or the Jodo sect? I think it was rebuilt by a Soto sect monk after it had been in decline... Although I haven't actually seen it, I heard that the Zenkoji-style Amida Triad statue is enshrined here. Even though the name of the temple has changed, it seems that it has carved out a history as a spiritual place for the local people. Hongenji Temple, located in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a Nichiren sect temple founded in 1628. Situated on Mt. Jakusei, the temple boasts the ancient Sanmon gate believed to have been relocated from Yokosuka Castle. The serene atmosphere and beautiful cherry blossoms create a delightful experience for visitors. The temple's chief priest is known for their warmth and generosity, making it a welcoming place for all who visit.

Jakusei Temple name: Hongenji Founded in 1628 The name of the mountain is Jakuseizan, from the Jakusei of Jakusei-in Nikken Shonin, who was invited to open the mountain, and it is called Hongenji, taking its origin from the posthumous name of Masanari Inoue, the 10th lord of Yokosuka Castle, and from Chugen-in-dono Ryusho Nisso Daikoji. The temple halls were completed 12 years after the mountain was founded. The place where it was founded was on the east side of the Inari statue in the valley of Sakashita (one valley west of this place), which was used to ward off evil spirits at Yokosuka Castle. Later, after Masatoshi Inoue, the 11th lord of the castle, transferred the castle to Kasama, Hitachi Province, his nephew Toshinaga Honda became the lord of Yokosuka Castle from Sanshu Okazaki Castle, and moved it to its current location around 1662. (Translated by Google) I went to the outdoor pool, which is only open in the summer. It's like THE municipal pool. It's faster and better to put on your swimsuit at home. Of course, there are changing rooms and coin lockers (100 yen refund, cannot fit a lot of luggage). However, it is old and cannot be called clean. Small children are likely to sit on the ground. If you are concerned about hygiene, it may be a good idea to have leisure sheets. There are tents and benches scattered around the poolside, but it doesn't feel like there's a lot of shade. I thought about using a pop-up tent, but it seemed like a no-no. Better check. So I brought an umbrella as a parasol. There are showers by the pool and showers at public elementary schools. There were also snacks for sale by the pool. I thought I would change my clothes in the changing room on the way home, but the kids were changing by the pool.
