Zoo
Outdoor Activities
iZoo, located in Kawazu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a large indoor/outdoor zoo that specializes in reptiles and amphibians. The facility houses a variety of these creatures including iguanas, lizards, turtles and snakes. Visitors can also see an endangered Galapagos giant tortoise at iZoo. In addition to the exhibits, the zoo features a café and gift shop for visitors to enjoy.
Went on weekend ! We could take picture with a long snake and see crocodile being hand fed ! It was quite a show! Also there is a space with big turtles walking free so you gotta be careful where you walk ;) The parc itself overall is old but it didn’t stop the fun going !

We were there on a rainy / Taifun day with a lot of Asian people with the same idea. But this was not the problem, why I only give one star! In the Zoo were a lot of animals with much more need on space than they get. The Japanese crane couple with their child had maximum 7-8 qm space. So proud and beautiful animals. But it’s get worse and worse. You can feed (for a fee of 200 Yen) land turtles, which „live“ on the floor every customer is walking on and it’s dark the hole day. When you enter the place, there were two turtles starring and not moving. They look so sad. The other turtles run to the customers for the food, so I had in my mind that they don‘t get enough food from the staff. But the worst thing I ever saw was, that you can sit or ride on a big land turtle (for a fee of 1.000 Yen). Image getting over 100 years old and a child is riding on your back. The turtles were not allowed to go in their outside space, but two really big ones tried really hard to open the door and the male staff guy pushed them - on a not good looking way - through the compound. After that the next customers came in for the ride and the photo of it. This opportunity was often used by Asian families and I was so upset about that. I‘m happy that kind of zoo is prohibited in Germany!

What an amazing find! We chanced upon this place and we had a ball of a time ! We liked that we could carry the reptiles . We also enjoyed the giant tortoises - and paid 1000yen to feed them - they roam freely around us ! You won’t regret coming here !!
Jaclyn K — Google review
My kids in love with turtles so this zoo was heaven. They can touch and feed them. They love touching different skin of reptile such as snakes, baby alligator etc. mostly it's indoor so it is not bad in rainy weather. If you like reptiles and near by this zoo please spare one hour to enjoy it.
Ghada A — Google review
Fun experience at Izoo. Not too many people. I had good interactions with turtles. They move fast if you have food in your hand. Prepare some cash to buy them spinach, it’s worth it!
Piggly W — Google review
My son and I enjoyed the iZoo very much. This place is much bigger than it appears from the entrance. We saw reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, insects & bugs, and an assortment of other great animals. Limited English display but scientific Latin names are displayed so we could Google. Great place to enjoy a few hours of learning fun!

Kawazu Sakura, also known as Kawazu cherry blossoms, is a stunning early blooming variety that starts flowering in early February. The blossoms are a slightly darker pink shade and were first discovered in Kawazu Town, blooming for the first time in 1966. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the cherry blossoms during both day and night along the river through the sakura avenue.
Love this place!!!! Every year around late Feb- early March the sakura here will bloom but somehow this year- 2025- it was significantly late. End of Feb and the sakuras are still in buds, even locals said this is very rare Beautiful walking path from Kawazu station along the river, there are plenty of food stalls with variety of food and the price is reasonable. People usually buy food and sit down by the river to enjoy the scene. If it were fully bloom, it would be fantastic!
Jupiter N — Google review
I visited the areas from 1Feb to 4Feb 25. It was too early to see the cherry blossom along the riverside. Flower buds were just growing on the trees and there were a few trees with a few flowers. The trees and view were still brown although wild flowers on riverbank were blooming. However there were a few trees of different species around the area were beautifully blooms. 3rd week of Feb would be a better time for visits to enjoy the pink colour view. It was quite with the festive stalls still close. It was peaceful and nice to walk without the crowd.
Frank T — Google review
Despite cherry blossoms were not a 100% due to a cold spell less than a week ago we absolutely enjoyed it. Lots of things to try from the food stalls, lots of friendly people and not many tourists.
Sabine B — Google review
We went here March 9th and cherry blossom trees are all bloomed..we had so much fun trying out food stalls…theres a lot of parking spaces that you can park..portable toilets are everywhere so thats not a problem..they have foot baths that you can pass by while walking around..we didn’t have a chance to try it coz its very popular to the locals ofcourse after a long walk of exploring everyone mostly want to try that😛..overall we enjoyed our visit here🫶

Photos are from February 17th :) it seems like it’s going to take a few more days until we see more blooming Sakura 🌸
Naomi K — Google review
Enchanting place where you can see and feel spring in winter time. I recommend going early as the crowd seems to arrive in drives around mid day. There are pop up shops where you can different snacks and festival food. It’s 100% dog friendly. i think there were many visitors with dogs than with children ☺️Make sure you check the train schedule on the way back because the intervals are quite long for the local train. You can take the express train but make sure to buy the express train ticket, which is all reserved seat, and it’s quite pricey.
Linor B — Google review
Really pretty place and glad I was able to see some cherry blossoms during the first week of February!! The travel journey was a bit long at 2 and a half hours from Tokyo to Kawazu. But was a short walk from Kawazu station to the cherry blossom area. Which is a long stretch of cherry blossoms ☺️🌸🌸

We join the two days tour and vi add t this place, it is a little early to see sakura, but we still can found some (10%).of the full blossoms. It was a fun trip.

Historical landmark
The Kawazu Sakura Original Tree is a stunning cherry blossom variety that captivates visitors with its early bloom, typically from early February to early March. This enchanting tree has an interesting history, having been discovered in 1955 by a local resident who found it growing amidst weeds. Initially known as "Komine Sakura," it was renamed Kawazu Sakura in 1974. As of February 10, 2024, these blossoms were in full bloom and drew crowds eager to witness their beauty.
17’ walk from Kawazu station and it was crowded but not too crowded. The tree doesnt look giant but it is definitely a big tree with beautiful blossoms
Jupiter N — Google review
Where this tree is situated is in front of a private residence along a main road. When we arrived it wasn’t busy but then crowds of people showed up along with tour buses going by very slowly. It’s certainly an attraction and it’s a beautiful tree for sure to photograph.

Parks
Nestled in the serene landscape of the Izu Peninsula, Mine Onsen Water Spout Park is a hidden gem that offers visitors a unique experience with its remarkable natural geyser. This enchanting park features Japan's largest hot spring fountain, which has been erupting since November 22, 1920. With an impressive spout reaching heights of up to 30 meters and releasing around 600 liters of steaming water every minute, it’s a sight to behold!
A hot water geyser that was accidentally discovered years ago. If it's cold outside its worth a visit. There are metal seats warmed by the hot spring underneath so your backside says toasty warm. There is also adequate bathroom facilities. A lady sells fresh eggs out the front. There is a tradition of boiling eggs in the hot spring for 14 minutes then cooling it down for 30 seconds. You then crack the eggs open and eat them with salt provided in convenient packets. It was a fun activity. I wouldn't make a special effort to get there, but if you are in the area (or like us accidentally stumbled apon it from the steam bellowing out) it's worth a stop. The shop has really tasty Wasabi products to purchase.
Thivagar N — Google review
natural hot spring fountain amazing Mine Onsen's largest hot spring in the East was born at noon on November 22, 1920, with a roar that pierced the sky approximately 50 meters above the ground. Since then, it has continued to erupt without ceasing for over 90 years. This is an artesian fountain where 600 liters of hot spring water at 100 degrees per minute spouts up to a height of 30 meters. You can also make giant hot spring eggs and enjoy a footbath in the hot springs.
KIICHIRO K — Google review
The sakura blossom will be earlier (early Feb) than the riverside. The park is near public carparks; several minutes's walk. It is very small with a few sakura trees and a footbath. The hot water gushes out every 30min.

Nice little place to stop along your road trip. The geyser didn’t go off while we were there from 3-3:45pm. Still, nice rest stop and anticipation of the geyser was exciting. We didn’t boil eggs but that’s neat, too.
ESTELL D — Google review
You can have a break in this small park which locates far away from the crowd. The show of splashing the onsen water deep under the earth occurs every 30 minutes, interesting show because of the passionate description of the staff.
Waha F — Google review
Such an adorable park tucked away at the back of a ryokan. The most friendly ladies work at the gift shop and will help to make sure us gaijins cook the onsen eggs correctly 😄 There's a nice foot bath to soak in while you enjoy your eggs next to sakura.

Zoos & Aquariums
Nestled in the serene surroundings of Kawazu, Shizuoka, the体感型カエル館 KawaZoo is a hidden gem for amphibian enthusiasts. Although it's slightly off the beaten path, this charming zoo offers an impressive array of frog species and well-maintained terrariums that provide ample space for these fascinating creatures. Visitors can explore a unique rainforest room where frogs roam freely among lush foliage, making it an exciting challenge to spot them in their naturalistic habitat.
Really great amphibian zoo! It's a little off the main road but definitely worth going to if you like frogs. All of the information about them is in Japanese, I wish they included English common names on the signs as well. All of the terrariums are extremely well kept and clean, plenty of space for the frogs. Some of them are huge! I had a hard time finding some of them because of how well-hidden they were, but it was lots of fun trying. It took about an hour to get through. In the summer they have some outdoor exhibits as well but I went in the winter so those frogs were not on display.
Kyle P — Google review
The ticket for this frog zoo is included with the ticket for I-zoo reptile zoo. My husband and I have raised dart frogs in the past, so we were very interested. The frogs are in well-kept, clean enclosures and they're clearly very well fed. The only disappointment was the frog room, which is fitted out as a frog utopia with plants and running water and mist. We couldn't find a single frog in there. Maybe it's TOO comfy and the frogs are living their best life and laughing at the humans trying to find them.
Amy T — Google review
If you’re in the area and like frogs, you have to visit the KawaZoo. This small zoo specializes in amphibians, mostly frogs with some axolotl and salamanders/newts. The ticket is 1000円 but you can also get a combo ticket with the nearby lizard zoo iZoo, or a 100円 discount with one of the local bus passes. There are many exotic species of frogs from all over the world. Some are in small, bare enclosures, but most have a lot of space and vegetation and seem to be happy. There is also an outdoor section with local species, a waterfall room where they roam free, and a “lab” area where you can see many tadpoles and froglets developing. The gift shop is full of enticing frog-themed items. I’d say it takes about 1h to visit at the fastest, but if you really like frogs then count on at least 2h.
Sarah H — Google review
A complete and utter delight, absolutely fantastic, my cheeks hurt from all the smiling giggling and gasping in awe of those little froggies.
Diane D — Google review
Many varieties of frogs from around the world! Searching for the frogs was more entertaining than expected.
Heather J — Google review
Came for the waterfalls and decided to stop on the way out. Was a nice little place with some interesting frogs. The wife and I really enjoyed looking for them and to see who could find them first. There is also an open room where the frogs are free to roam. Overall we would recommend as 1000 yen is a small price to pay to see so many different frogs.
Mathew S — Google review
So many cute frogs and some salamanders😍 1000yen, worth it if you like frogs!

Fantastic onsen hotel that I hope to be back soon. Easily accessible by train and bus. I recommend stocking up on food and drinks before coming for the night as the price of things in area is super expensive. What made this stay incredible is the friendly service, good sleeping material, and the multiple onsen rooms. After 7:30pm, you can go to each one and lock it so you can have private time. Not all onsen pools are super hot but there are those that are 🔥 which is incredible! The sound of the waterfall allowed me to sleep hard.

Quiet, peaceful and the private baths were great. We could even use the coolest one with our baby. The coffee from the vending machine was out of date and the staff didn't see to know what to do about it. Other than that we had a lovely stay

The soba noodle shop 美よし is known for its simple and chewy buckwheat noodles with a generous portion size. I found the restaurant using the location information from the photo and visited for the first time in 13 years. I think there was a small waterwheel in front of the restaurant back then? Maybe I'm remembering it wrong? The interior of the restaurant is of course the same as it was back then, and by coincidence I sat in the same seat as I did 13 years ago. Of course the soba was very delicious, and since you can't use up all the wasabi, they provided bags for you to take home, which was a thoughtful service. The shiitake mushrooms that came with the soba were also delicious. On my way out, I saw some cherries hanging from the trees in the parking lot, and they told me I could eat as many as I wanted lol They even cut some of the branches and gave me some cherries lol (Original)

It's quite a portion! ♪ Apparently, the soba noodles here are machine-made, not hand-made, which is why they can serve this generous portion! ♪ The soup has a very dashi-rich, mild flavor, so you can dip the soba noodles right in. 🙆 ☝️ The soba noodles are fragrant and have just the right amount of texture—delicious! When you dunk the soba noodles in the soup and put them in your mouth, the aroma of the dashi and the soba blend beautifully. 😆 Delicious! I love this kind of soba! ♪ And then the half maitake mushroom tempura bowl arrived! It smelled great, too. 🤤 The sauce here is delicious! As I slowly took a bite of the maitake mushroom tempura, the aroma and flavor of the sauce and maitake mushrooms filled my mouth... 🤤 Delicious! I ate nonstop with the seasonal vegetable tempura, and finished my meal in no time. 😅 The music of the koto in the restaurant made it feel like time was passing slowly, so I was able to concentrate on my meal. ♪ Wow, it was so good! I thoroughly enjoyed the specially prepared half-maitake mushroom tempura bowl ♪ Thank you ♪ Next time I'd like to try the original Amagi soba! Thank you for the meal 🙇 (Original)

(Translated by Google) The taste of the soba was a little less than I expected. This is my personal opinion as everyone has their own preferences. The soba soup was delicious. Wasabi is definitely delicious. There is a parking lot 🅿️ next to the store and at the corner of the intersection across the street. The tempura feels crispy and fried. The atmosphere inside is Japanese-style and rural. It felt like I could eat slowly. It seems that Kawazu Sakura 🌸 is famous nearby, so it might be crowded at that time. Personally, I thought it was a pretty good soba restaurant.

(Translated by Google) The sweetfish stew with plums was exquisite! Even though I don't like umeboshi, the seasoning was delicious, and it ranked first or second among the river fish dishes I've eaten. I was surprised that the ayu meat was so soft that I could eat it without leaving the head or tail. Is the umeboshi garnish a fruit? It was such a wonderful pickled plum (lol). The staff at the shop were also very nice and took good care of us, including the soba bath. The tempura was also crispy and tasted like a restaurant. The miso oden was also very delicious, with the sweet and spicy miso combined with the elasticity of the konjac.

(Translated by Google) The good thing is that you can eat it by slurping the fresh wasabi. Raw wasabi is fresh and delicious. Afterwards, the konnyaku miso was delicious. The expected improvement is to improve the quality of the soba itself. If I do that, I think the taste will be on par with wasabi. I look forward to your efforts.

Ichiyama is a delightful culinary gem located just a short stroll from Kawazu Station, making it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the Izu Peninsula. This charming eatery specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine, with the owner personally selecting fresh seafood that shines in their dishes. Diners rave about the local fish offerings, as well as the handmade soba and various meat options on the diverse menu.
Great seafood with reasonable price, one kaizen-don consists of 6-7 kind of fishes. Highly recommended for anyone who is planning to visit Kawazu.

Rather expensive for the quantity. The fried shrimps were so-so.

(Translated by Google) I still remember accompanying my elders to search for suitable objects across Japan. After buying several cultural properties, he planned to go to the Izu Peninsula to see if there was a better place to buy. At that time, I got up in the cold wind at 4 o'clock in the morning, jumped into the car, and drove from Mount Hiei in Kyoto to the Izu Peninsula. I took a break in Shizuoka on the way, and looked at Mount Fuji from the window in the toilet. I bought a can of milk at the rest stop and continued my journey. The first meal of the day was at the "Ichiyama" kinmei sea bream specialty store in Kawazu Town. The teriyaki gilt sea bream (and fish head), seasonal sashimi and abalone are all delicious. However, after traveling for more than 400 kilometers, the words "wanting to sleep" filled up the space in my mind. I really can’t squeeze out too many smiles to express how amazing I am about the meal. Sure enough, traveling should be accompanied by adequate rest (?

(Translated by Google) This year, the days have been colder than usual, and after enjoying the Kawazu cherry blossoms later than usual, I went without a reservation to try some of Izu's ``delicious food.'' I was prepared for it to be very busy at this time of year, but luckily I was able to get a seat without having to wait. In fact, I was starving to the max after driving for nearly 6 hours from Tokyo. So I immediately ordered the ``Kinmezuke Sashimi Set Meal'' and the ``Domestic Beef Steak Bowl.'' The sashimi is thickly sliced and fresh, and the simmered fish is large and fatty and very delicious. The meat in the steak bowl is thick and filling. It's been a long time since I last had a very satisfying lunch at a tourist spot. Next time I come, I would like to stay overnight and enjoy the meal. (Translated by Google) I guess the prices are aimed at tourists... I feel like the prices are a little on the aggressive side. The special seafood bowl had several kinds of sashimi on top, and it was fresh, delicious, and gorgeous to look at. The boiled red snapper set meal was also sweetly seasoned, stylish to look at, and delicious, but even though it wasn't particularly busy, the female staff member had a strong aura of wanting us to go home early, and credit cards and QR code payments were not accepted at all, so I gave it one less star.
