Museums
The Otsuka Museum of Art, located in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, was established by the Otsuka Group to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The museum houses over 1,000 full-size reproductions of famous Western artworks such as the 'Mona Lisa' and 'The Last Supper' by artists like Picasso, Renoir, and da Vinci.
Really enjoyed the museum. We arrived right around lunch time and decided to eat at the restaurant before walking around the museum. Lunch was very tasty and came out quite quickly. The menu is limited though, so if you have dietary preferences, you may want to eat elsewhere first. Lots to see in the museum. We spent about 3 hours looking around, if you’re really into art and analyzing paintings, you’ll need more time to really look at everything.

Visiting the **Otsuka Museum of Art** was such a cool experience! It's not your usual museum—everything is **ceramic reproductions** of famous Western masterpieces, but they're all **life-sized**, so it feels like you're touring the world's best galleries in one place. The **Sistine Chapel replica** was mind-blowing—you can even **take photos** (which you usually can't in real museums!). My favorite was Van Gogh’s *Sunflowers*—so vibrant! The museum is huge (4km of galleries!), so wear comfy shoes. A bit pricey (¥3,300 for adults), but totally worth it for art lovers!
TimBerg — Google review
It has 5 floors of remade art. Its not the real thing. But still fun to observe and see with your own eyes. I appreciate they have arrows on the ground to point which direction you should go. They have many cafes and places to sit and enjoy the view. I appreciate how many chairs were available to sit and relax in. I was there for 5 hours. I would have loved to stay longer. But with time constraints we had to head out. I do appreciate the lighting and the recreation. It makes you want to see the work in person. I hope I can do so one day. I would plan this as a whole day event. But if you are with kids that might not be possible. The Naruto whirlpool tours boat are near by if you want to find something different. Enjoy and take your time.

The Otsuka Museum of Art is a huge Museum that cannot be covered in one day and needs few days to see everything. The collection of reproductions from all periods, starting from ancient history through midevil, Renessainc, Baroque, Impressionist period, expressionist, until modern art is amazing. Highly recommended to any art lover!
Ehud B — Google review
Excellent museum with a lot of interesting painting and presentation. 3300 yen of entrance fees was worth. There were a lot of exhibits and easily 4 hours could be spent here. There is a museum parking located (600m awat) near the naruto sightseeing boat parking. The museum is courteous enough to provide free shuttle vice versa.
Hock T — Google review
This is my favorite museum in Japan. Everything is a reproduction made by transferring ceramic two boards. You can take pictures, you can shoot video, you could even touch them.
L.E. O — Google review
This is a marvellous museum. If you visit Japan, do make an effort to visit this highly unique museum too. It is like this: whilst in Japan, you can tour the most historic and famous tourist destinations of Greece, Italy, Spain and others, all at once. How? They have recreated these places with astonishing technology. The technique of applying every colour to tiles – meaning any colour or image can be depicted on tiles. For instance, the most famous Impressionist paintings appear utterly lifelike, yet they are actually projections onto tiles. Visitors are even encouraged to touch them, revealing they are neither originals nor actual paintings. It is truly astonishing what modern technology can achieve. I repeat, this museum is an absolute must-visit. You will not be disappointed. After all, you can experience famous sights from around the world all in one place.
Max H — Google review
It is a MASSIVE museum with thousands of famous paintings in the world. It would take half a day to explore the entire area. These paintings are not the original ones but very close replicas. They offer some museum tours and it is very helpful for understanding the background of the works. I am not sure if they offer tours in English or other languages, but I think at least they provide an audio tool that explains them. The museum doesn’t just have a great replicas that made from pottery. It also replicates surrounding areas like caves and architecture transporting visitors to different places. Additionally, there is a lovely cafe where you can enjoy some food and drinks related to the arts and the area.

The Uzu no Oka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum is a hilltop complex that offers stunning views of the Naruto Strait and features a large onion sculpture. Due to renovation work, the Michi no Eki Uzushio has temporarily moved to a nearby hilltop and operates as Michi no Eki Uzushio in Uzumachi Terrace, offering various island specialties.
20250324 A small stop but I love this place probably because I like onion! Got great view, a few nice onions to take photo with and a lot of onion goods to buy. It was our third stop with these kind of goods but it was the biggest.

If you drive and have enough time then can consider to come here. It is very far and at the end of the awaji island. View is good but no need to purposely come here. Many local visited here and queued for the overpriced onion burger. Many cars over the weekend and jam to enter the car park

A must if you are in Awajishima. The view on Shikoku is beautiful and the restaurant on the 2nd floor is very good with a very nice view (I advise you to directly go there and register yourself, you can then follow the waiting time on your phone). As for the activities, it is mainly just pictures and a nice crane game that cost 500yen, which you will still receive onion whether yo win or not. I STRONGLY advise you to go there at the opening as it is just too crowded starting 10:00.

May 19, 2025 A must-visit on Awaji Island with spectacular views of Shikoku and several giant onions as photo ops. So many quirky onion goods to buy as souvenirs!
Andromeda T — Google review
A hilltop where can oversee the bridge from a distance. Free parking. The souvenir shop sells lots of “awaji onion” related products. Onions planted in this area are more sweet and less spicy. The hamburger booth next to the parking lot is famous in Japan, so I had to wait in a line for 20 mins to enjoy this gourmet. Overall it’s worth to spend few hours at here if you never came before.

Road station Uzushio, also known as Michi-no-Eki Uzushio, is a popular stop for travelers looking to experience the local flavors and culture of Awaji Island. Situated on Naruto-misaki (Cape Naruto), it offers stunning views of O-Naruto Bridge and the possibility to witness the powerful eddying current in the strait. The station is renowned for its original award-winning hamburger, made with ingredients that showcase the region's culinary prowess.
Nice views from Awaji Shima across to tokushima, Shikoku. You can see the uzushio whirlpool from a distance. It’s quite amazing. The toilets in the rest stop are modern and clean. There’s a lot of wide parking space. There’s a gift shop there with local products and produce like the famous onions from Awajishima. There’s a lot of local stuff for dogs too which is great for dog lovers to buy a gift or let your dogs enjoy. Did not see Awaji dog products after this. A nice pit stop on the journey from Shikoku to Awaji.

Spectacular view with restaurants, a museum and souvenir shops. Great place to hang out and to dine in with the perfect scenery! This place is a must visit if you are in Awaji!!

A small roadside station, but it offers an amazing view of the Naruto Bridge and the Naruto whirlpool in the distance. The Awaji beef burger and onion burger are a must-try, though I did not get the chance to try the onion ice cream. The souvenir shop sells plenty of Awaji products, including a variety of Awaji onions, and even offers free self-service tastings of onion soup. The interior is narrow and can feel very crowded on a weekday, probably due to the start of school holiday. We had planned to visit Uzu no Oka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum, which also serves onion burgers (same brand), but the traffic jam there was terrible, so we ended up here instead, with a smaller crowd. I would love to return in cooler weather if I have the chance.

Very beautiful place. Nice to get the view of the Naruto (thus is a little far away) and buy some souvenirs. Loses a star because the ice cream does not have any taste at all.

The sunset sky, the Seto Inland Sea, and the onions shining dully in the setting sun were an exquisitely beautiful sight, and I captured it in a photograph. Whirlpools Cruise

Embark on a unique adventure with the Whirlpools Cruise, sailing through the Naruto Strait to witness the awe-inspiring natural phenomenon of whirlpools. The strait, located between Awaji Island and Shikoku, is renowned for its powerful tides that give rise to some of the most impressive whirlpools in the world. On this retro sailing ship, you'll have an open deck vantage point to marvel at these natural wonders up close.
Wonderful experience of the marvels of nature. Ticket prices are reasonable ¥2500 per adult for this 1 hour cruise excursion. There’s many cruise timings per day but there’s only certain timings that have strong chance of the whirlpool. You can check their website and buy tickets directly online which is better than buying tickets upon arrival since you may not get tickets. Easy to exchange the tickets at the counter with the QR code. The parking area is across the building so it’s a bit confusing but the place is small so you can walk over easily. Descriptions on the cruise is only in Japanese so if you don’t understand Japanese, it could be hard to get deeper information about the phenomenon but it’s still ok to go explore this. Interesting that there’s multiple whirlpools happening simultaneous, as I thought it’s only a big one. There’s a small but well stocked gift shop there with local & regional products. Suggest you guys to shop while waiting for the cruise as you should arrive 30 min before cruise starts. After the cruise many people rush to shop, especially tour bus tourists so it’s crowded.
ML — Google review
New experience to see Naruto whirlpool. I checked the forecast on the website , bought tickets in the machine tickets and walk to the pier, got warm welcome from staff , in the boat they had a lot of Japanese, only me is tourist. Used time around 45 minutes, staff speak only Japanese.
Cherry J — Google review
Recommended to book your cruise ticket online 1 day in advance and check the forecast for the visibility/size of whirlpool. You can also purchase at the counter, subjected to availability. Arrive at least 30mins before your cruise departure time. If you have bought your tickets online, exchange for physical tickets at the counter. Ensure your phone/camera has secured straps or they are securely fastened to your selfie sticks. The captain will steer the ship near the whirlpools and there is a narrator speaking in Japanese who will tell you where the whirlpools are. The cruise is about 45mins. Unisex toilet is available. Overall it is an enjoyable cruise and you will get to see Naruto whirlpools (naturally occurring) that is a result of the exchange of warm and cold water currents.
Larry K — Google review
It was a wonderful experience...i had fun...there werwn't a lot of people which is great but maybe because it's winter and price is reasonable...they even have a tatami room below deck...
Kristyl K — Google review
There are different boats leaving the center. Check the schedule and whether it coincides with the peaks of whirlpool activity. Usually that would be in the morning or late afternoon (impact of tides). The cruise is ~1 hour duration. Thus if the whirlpools start to wane by 11am for example, you would not want to take a 1030h cruise. It takes about 25-30 minutes to sail out of the harbor to Naruto bridge. This is our opinion. There is no doubt that being close to the whirlpools in a large ship is one of the safest option. But with a good camera and timing you can still take great pictures of the swells.
Mel M — Google review
An interesting yet exciting cruise . Cost of the cruise is reasonable and waiting time too was acceptable. Downside was, feeling a little unsafe as no life jackets was compulsory during the cruise but maybe thats just us land lovers . There are two types of cruise....one on a big boat and another on a small one. Each at a different port. We chose here with a smaller boat as its nearer to the looking glass bridge above.
Aryl S — Google review
I have a very good experience in Whirlpools Cruise. I booked a trip marked with a good whirlpool scale in advance. On that day, we went there at around 10 with cold weather and sky started raining. The staff from the cruise immediately prepared hand warmer and raincoat for every visitor. The trip on the cruise was never bored. When we set sail, staff on land pick up some large paper hand to wave and say good luck to us. They even prepared water cannon to salute to the ship. During the trip, they have arranged a guide to introduce the surrounding area and history of the whirlpool. On the upper deck, the ship got a heated room for those who feel cold and wanted to enjoy the view indoor. Others like me can walk around the ship and watch the beautiful scene and amazing waves under the bridge. The tide under the bridge was the cause of those whirlpool. Although it is an amazing view, it is also hard to observe a significant whirlpool like what they have showed in video. Nevertheless the whole trip is very enjoyable and it is a must go activities if you visit Awaji Island.
Javin Y — Google review
We followed a day trip with the local travel agency. I'm not sure about the entry fee. The whole trip takes about an hour +, and the cruise guide converse in Japanese. There is no translation or information on board about the whirls pool. You get to see the whirling pools up really close, and the ship will turn around for each side of the passengers to see it. Such a phenomenon cause by 2 different currents, so whirlpools occur. There is queue for public and separate fees to pay for adults and children. There are many timings for cruise ship in a day. There is a small museum about the wildlife, video and photos in basement level inside the cruiseship, same direction as going to the washrooms. Is good to bring children to see the phenomenon.

Awajishima Onion Kitchen is a popular gourmet burger spot located in Awaji Island, known for its delicious burgers made with hefty rings of locally grown Awaji onions. The menu features a variety of mouthwatering options, with prices starting at 770 yen and above. Visitors can enjoy their meal in the indoor or outdoor seating areas, and there's also a car park available outside the store.
The Awaji beef onion burger was super delicious! I originally came for the onion burger, but the Awaji beef impressed me even more. The patty was grilled perfectly, with a smoky aroma and rich, flavourful taste. The onion ring was also very tasty. We had to wait a little for our order as there were more people than I expected for a weekday, probably because the summer school holidays had just started. I had planned to visit Uzu no Oka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum, which also serves onion burgers (same brand), but the traffic jam there was terrible, so we ended up here with a smaller crowd. This area is very well-known for its onions. Accordingly, this place offers a wide variety of onion-based hamburgers. They weren’t bad, but I was expecting more onions, if that makes sense. There was a very long line because it was during New Year’s but that’s nobody’s fault. The onion ice cream was interestingly good.

Les L — Google review
Probably just my lack of experience with Japanese burgers, but that word apparently doesn't have to mean a hamburger patty. The burger that I had, the onions were the main event, and there was a pile of shredded meat on top of that. That may sound like I didn't like it, but I loved it! Onions are the thing here, of course, and the onion rings and onions on my burger were incredible. The lemonade that I got had a bunch of lemon zest bits in it, which was also new to me and I was surprised how much I liked it.

Awajishima Onion Kitchen is a popular spot on the island, known for its delicious burgers featuring Awaji beef and sweet onions. The beef burger stands out with actual beef pieces, fried onions, raw onions, and mayo/tomato sauce. Despite the long lines on weekends, it's worth the wait for this unique burger experience. The onion rings are crispy and sweet but may be served cold at times.
Waited in line for at least 30 mins to get the best burger on the island because another store was on rest day, basically everyone just rushed to this only store opened. We ordered beef burger with onion, lemonade, onion rings and beef croquette. Beef burger was not just ordinary burger you had elsewhere - it was actually beef pieces (instead of beef patty) with fried onions, raw onions and mayo / tomato sauce. It was super tasty. Onion rings are crispy snd sweet but were cold when served. Lemonade wqs refreshing after eating so much deep fried / oily food. Beef croquette was served hot with creamy potatoes inside, kinda running I would say. We later returned the store to try icecream and yoghurt too. It was made with local dairy. Icecream was smooth and rich in milk flavours, the acidity of yoghurt drink at the bottom made a good balance with the sweetness of icecream on top. Recommend trying if you visit Awaji Island!

So glad I made it just before they closed for the day! The staff were very friendly and accommodating. I had the onion gratin burger 2h after I bought it (due to the long journey back to osaka) but it was still yummy. So were the onion rings. Would love to return some day!

(Translated by Google) It was a fun experience. There are various onion souvenirs and sculptures, making for fun photo opportunities. You can stroll around the area and find various photo spots. The burgers were delicious, and the onion milkshake had a unique spicy flavor. Even on a Monday, it was crowded, and there was a long wait to park in the parking lot right in front (parking is free). I recommend parking in the temporary parking lot (also free) before your destination and walking up the hill for about five minutes.

Yakiniku restaurant
Barbecue restaurant
Arii-tei is a must-visit yakiniku restaurant on Awaji Island, known for its excellent value for money. Despite the need for reservations and occasional wait times, the delicious Awaji beef and special roses make it worth the effort. The establishment's long-standing reputation and commitment to quality are evident in their attentive service and friendly staff.
A local Yakiniku restaurant, their staffs are very helpful and friendly, even we speak different language. Really appreciate. I will go back again because of their service. The place is comfort and cozy. Car park is located on the front door side. Reasonable menu price and top quality of meats. Don’t forget the onion.

(Translated by Google) Entered the restaurant around 17:30 on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Ordered salted tongue ¥950, top loin ¥1,350, special belly ¥800, handmade sausage ¥350, assorted grilled vegetables ¥200, Chinese cabbage kimchi ¥150, spicy tendon soup ¥490. Menu prices Everything was cheap, but the portions were small except for the soup. The meat was especially delicious, and the sausage was cut into rings from the beginning, so it had a texture and taste closer to fish sausage than it did to be crispy and juicy. The spicy tendon soup was more sweet than spicy, and was delicious in its own way. There was a vacancy this time, so I was lucky to be able to enter the restaurant without even walking in, but I think a reservation would normally be required on this date and time.

I was looking forward to it because it's a yakiniku restaurant frequented by locals. I'd read some reviews saying that the service differs between locals and tourists, but the food was served quickly and the service was great. The meat was tender and delicious! The sauce is a flavor that seems to be a matter of opinion. It's soy sauce-based with a strong dashi flavor, so it might not suit miso fans... It went well with the fatty cuts. We went on a Saturday just after 5pm, but customers kept coming in and it quickly filled up. By the time we left, there were customers waiting. I recommend making a reservation! We ate a lot for two people and it cost about 8,000 yen, so it was a great deal! It's a great place when you want to eat cheap, delicious meat!

(Translated by Google) Apparently, this popular restaurant in Awaji is known only to those in the know. It was certainly a little hard to find, but expectations were high as we arrived in an old house at the top of a hill. The kimchi served as an appetizer was mildly spicy and packed with flavor. The first meat we had was beef tongue. Large portions of meat were piled high on a large platter. Then came grilled vegetables, loin, belly, tripe, and tetchan. Finally, we had fillet. All were thickly sliced and generously portioned. And delicious. The top fillet, in particular, melted on the tongue. The young man accompanying us said it was the best yakiniku he'd ever had in his life. After eating that, adding rice, and drinking beer, we managed to fit it all in one hand. This alone was worth the trip, and we were incredibly satisfied.

(Translated by Google) There are many reviews saying that the meat is bad, but for this price and taste, it was good enough that you would get change back. I came here with low expectations, but it didn't taste bad at all, and when I paid, I was surprised at how cheap it was. I'd like to come again. It was hard to call the staff, but overall, it was good value for money. The soup was excellent.

When the new rice harvest comes, they also sell the rice they grow themselves. (Original) 20

(Translated by Google) We stopped by on our way home at the end of a trip. Be careful as the parking lines have almost completely disappeared and are no longer visible. As it was 5pm on a weekday (opening time), we were the only group inside the restaurant, and two other groups arrived a little later. The yakiniku was very good quality and delicious. We had heard good things about this restaurant from an acquaintance, and thought it was a very satisfying restaurant with good taste and good value for money. We would definitely like to stop by again ☺ (Original)

(Translated by Google) Exquisite yakiniku recommended by a local. This yakiniku restaurant is run by an Awaji beef producer. For a Tokyoite, this price for this quality is a bargain! It was the best restaurant!!
