Tokushima in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Tokushima, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Tokushima is best known for the Awa Odori, one of Japan’s largest and liveliest traditional dance festivals, held every August and drawing performers and spectators from across the country. The city sits at the mouth of the Yoshino River, with easy access to scenic spots like the Naruto Strait, famous for its tidal whirlpools, and the rugged Iya Valley in the interior of the prefecture. Visitors can ride the ropeway up Mount Bizan for panoramic views, explore local temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage route, and sample regional specialties such as Tokushima ramen and sudachi citrus products.
With favorites like Awaodori Kaikan, Bizan Ropeway, and SASANOSHO, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Tokushima Totoichiban Arata and UOROMAN Konyamachi so you can get the best taste of Tokushima while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Awaodori Kaikan is a museum located at the base of Mount Bizan in Tokushima, offering a year-round experience of the famous Awa Odori festival. This traditional dancing event, dating back to the Kamakura period, takes place during Obon in August and features participants dressed in traditional attire dancing through the streets.
An absolute gem of a place which is about 10-13 minutes on foot from the JR station. If you're in Tokushima for a half day trip, make sure you don't miss this. I watched a daytime show and it's worth every penny. The performing troop was very professional and highly engaging, inviting folks to dance. The dance itself is very easy to learn and I love how accessible it is for all ages. Make sure you visit this place. There's also a really good gift shop downstairs.

The exhibition in 3F is very simple (= the ticket is not worthy). Hence, highly recommended to watch the live dancing because not only it is awesome but also it includes detailed explanation about the dance.
Chao-Yang F — Google review
The Awa Odori is an incredibly vibrant traditional dance, accompanied by equally spirited celebrations, that is performed each August to mark Obon, a Buddhist festival for the repose of the dead. Originating in Tokushima, the dance has gradually spread across all of Japan and recently even been held as far away as Paris. Tokushima, however, remains Awa Odori’s spiritual home. The region’s culture is deeply entwined with the dance, and Tokushima City is home to the Awa Odori Kaikan where performances can be enjoyed, and participated in, all year round. At Awadori Kaikan, the performance is interactive, where the audience is invited to interact and dance with the performers. At the end, the performers would be outside the theatre for a photo or two.

If you’re in Tokushima and looking to dive deep into the region’s cultural heritage, Awaodori Kaikan is an experience you shouldn’t miss. Situated in the heart of Tokushima City, this lively venue is dedicated to the traditional Awa Odori dance festival, a highlight of Tokushima’s cultural calendar. Atmosphere and Setting: The Kaikan is a charming blend of modern and traditional Japanese aesthetics. The interior is designed to immerse visitors in the vibrant spirit of the Awa Odori festival. The decor, with its bright colors and dynamic displays, captures the essence of the festival’s high energy and joy. Exhibits and Performances: The highlight of Awaodori Kaikan is undoubtedly the live dance performances. The shows are a feast for the senses, featuring spirited Awa Odori dances that are both mesmerizing and infectious. The performers, clad in traditional costumes, move with an exuberance that’s truly captivating. It’s clear that a lot of passion and dedication goes into these performances. In addition to the live shows, the museum features informative exhibits about the history and significance of the Awa Odori festival. These displays provide valuable context and enrich the overall experience. Interactive elements, such as trying on traditional costumes or participating in mini dance sessions, add a fun, hands-on aspect to the visit. Facilities and Services: The facility is well-maintained, with clean and accessible amenities. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions and provide insights into the festival’s traditions. There’s also a gift shop offering various souvenirs, including traditional crafts and festival-related items. Dining: While there is no dedicated dining area within the Kaikan, the surrounding area of Tokushima offers plenty of dining options. Local eateries serve up delicious regional dishes, making it easy to enjoy a meal before or after your visit. Tips for Visitors: Check the schedule for performance times ahead of your visit to ensure you catch a live show. If you’re interested in participating in a dance workshop, it’s worth inquiring about availability in advance. Allow yourself time to explore the surrounding area, as Tokushima has a lot to offer in terms of cultural experiences and local cuisine. Overall: Awaodori Kaikan offers a vibrant, engaging glimpse into one of Japan’s most lively festivals. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese culture and dance, providing both entertainment and education in a fun, immersive setting. Whether you’re a dance enthusiast or just curious about regional traditions, this venue will leave you with a deeper appreciation of Tokushima’s rich cultural heritage.

Tokushima is very proud and famous for its Awa Odori dance, so it is simply a must-see when you visit Tokushima. I went to see the show at 15:00. They recommend coming to the one in the evening because it is slightly longer and has more to offer, but 20:00 is a bit too late for me considering my hotel was half an hour walk away. They have multiple show times during the day, and you can just purchase your ticket when you get there. I'd recommend the combo-ticket which also gets you the ropeway up and down, plus the little exhibit on the third floor (which isnt worthy of its own entrance fee honestly). The show itself was fun. It was filled with demonstrations, as well as a presentation with explanations on how the dance originated, how it differs for men and women, and which instruments they use to keep the rhythm. Sadly, the presentation background did not show the explanation in English; only in Kanji and Korean. So I sat there with my Google Lens open so it could translate for me. I guess they must not see many westerners there? Towards the end of the show, we were all invited to stand up and participate in the dance after learning the basic steps. For me personally, I'm not a big fan of this, as it puts you on the spot. I'd rather just watch the show and learn about its history; as they are the professionals after all and thats who I came to see dance.

A Wonderful and Unforgettable Awa Odori Experience! We had an absolutely fantastic evening at the Awa Odori Kaikan! The dance performance was energetic and visually captivating, and the live music from the traditional band was incredibly engaging — it truly drew us into the spirit of the show. The highlight of the evening was when the performers taught the audience how to dance Awa Odori and invited everyone to join in. My parents, who usually just watch, were so happy and excited to participate, dancing along with big smiles on their faces. At the end of the show, the performers even took group photos with the audience, showing their genuine warmth and hospitality. It made us feel truly welcomed and appreciated as guests. It was a fun, heartwarming, and interactive cultural experience that’s perfect for all ages. If you’re visiting Tokushima, I highly recommend making time to see this show — it’s something you won’t forget!

Ramen restaurant
Tokushima Ramen Menoh Tokushima Ekimae Main Store is a popular ramen spot in town, known for its flavorful and rich soup. The restaurant uses a combination of tonkotsu and shoyu broth, giving the soup its unique brownish hue that impresses many visitors. The pork in the ramen is soft and melts in your mouth, adding to the overall richness of the dish. To order, customers use a ticket machine outside before waiting for a seat inside.
The ramen served here is excellent with a good texture of noodles. The char siu pork also tastes nice. The broth is rich with tonkatsu flavour, but it may be a bit too salty for some people.

Very tasty local ramen. The broth, the the noodle tasted very good. Efficient service. Very popular place.

Little hole in the wall place for Tokushima ramen. I loved the char siu ramen. The gyoza (pork and shrimp) were good too. Taking off one star for the limited drink menu. Unless I missed something, they only serve beer. Order and pay at the machine before entering.
Stephanie S — Google review
It was a unique experience of ramen. I'm not a 100% fan even though my wife loved it. Pretty authentic if you're looking to try Tokushima ramen. (Imho)
Peter Y — Google review
Vending machine is located outside the shop. Simple user interface even for someone who doesn’t know any Japanese. Delicious ramen and thick broth. The amount of garlic gives an added dimension to the ramen. Free flow spicy bean sprouts adds a kick to the taste.
Viktor — Google review
Tokushima ramen personally doesn't look all that appetizing, so it was a pleasant surprise to see how tasty it was. I ordered the 'Menoh special' which basically had everything, and this was more than filling enough without having to order another 'kaedama' serving of noodles. The meat was tender and flavorful, with noodles being on the thin side which goes well with this type of ramen.
W M — Google review
Tokushima is proud of its ramen, and rightly so. Meno's unique brand of ramen, using a combination of tonkotsu and shoyu broth gives the soup its brownish hue. But take a sip, and you'll feel like you're in ramen heaven. The noodles used are more similar to Hakata ramen than the fat gummy noddles used in Hokkaido (where I currently reside). I opted for the full course, pairing the ramen with the equally mouth-watering 豚丼 (braised pork rice) and gyoza. And I suspect I will come back for more during the rest of my stay in Tokushima.
Matsuri J — Google review
One of the most flavorful bowls of ramen I’ve ever had! Absolutely love the rich flavor of the soup. I came here for a super late lunch (around 3pm) and we were able to walk right in. Ordering from the vending machine outside, I added extra toppings because I was super hungry. I added an egg and charsu, and both were delicious! The pork is soft and melts in your mouth, adding to the rich flavor of the soup. Thanks to this shop, Tokushima style ramen has become my one of my favorite regional ramen in Japan!

Experience the breathtaking views of Tokushima City and its surroundings from the summit of Mount Bizan with a ride on the Bizan Ropeway. This iconic mountain holds great cultural significance and offers panoramic vistas of the cityscape, Seto Inland Sea, and nearby mountains. The ropeway provides easy access to the peak, with gondolas departing every 15 minutes. While waiting for your turn, you can explore nearby attractions such as the Awaodori culture center and a famous shrine.
Nice ropeway whit a good view over the whole of Tokushima. Easiest way to the top of mount bizan
Jonas M — Google review
There was nothing very special at the top of the mountain. Probably because it was very foggy and the Sakura had not bloomed yet. But I enjoyed the hike up to the cherry viewing area. Very serene and comfortable.
Ken K — Google review
A quick 6 minute cablecar trip each way. There are two carts that leave in each direction every 15 minutes. When I visited in the late afternoon, there weren't that many people there. There were no long lines or big crowds in the cabins. Once upstairs, there are a bunch of vending machines or you can get something in the café. The upstairs of the café also offers the same nice view, just a little bit above the tree tops. The trees could do with a little bit of trimming, though. That, or they need to start building the platforms higher in the near future. Technically, you can also reach this viewing platform by driving yourself via the road on the other side of the hill. It's not exclusive to the ropeway company. But it is a fun little activity while you're there, so I enjoyed it.

眉山 We were in Tokushima for the Awaodori, got a day to kill and decided to visit Binzan park, the ropeway is just a few minutes walk from the Awaodori Kaikan. Spent over one hour in the area,  apart from the nice city view from above, we did not find anything special about the place.

You can the whole city from the top. A breathtaking view. As the station is located same as Awaodori culture centre and one of the famous shrine, it is worth to visit this place. Its only 10-15 minutes walk from Tokushima station.

Ramen restaurant
Ramen Todai (Omichi Shop) is a popular Tokushima B-class gourmet ramen spot known for its rich pork bone soup and thinly-sliced pork belly topping. The thicker broth and unique taste make it a super special Tokushima style ramen. Customers can enjoy free eggs and rice, adding another dimension to the broth. Ordering is convenient with a machine outside that accepts Suica, and once inside, diners can choose whether they want their dish with or without garlic.
Super tasty and cheap. Room is not big. Super Tiny. There is a box of free heat packs for customers outside. Love this place. Ramen is not too thick, and free eggs and rice will be served all the time.🙌

Saw the recommendation from hostel so come to take a bite. ¥750 (April 2025) for regular ramen. And I am glad I choose this option because they also provide free raw eggs and free rice on unconditional portion. As a decent person I will only consume 1 egg and 1 bowl of rice please. The ramen broth is thick and very thick and so thick in taste, I think some macho man would like it to kick off their taste bud. And there is only a smaller piece of meat, so my main meal today is noodle plus rice. There is instruction to teach you the steps on taking the ramen. And put the rice after for absorbing all its flavor. I just followed and came out in a full belly. I would recommend for visitors would like to experiment new things, and has a belly to take it. Just don’t order too much.

Free rice, eggs, and garlic in this economy?? Absolutely amazing. No frills restaurant with greasy, rich ramen, but that's what you come here for. I ordered the Extra Meat Thick Soup Ramen, regular size, for 1050¥. It's a bit heavy and greasy as expected, with thin firm noodles. The meat is salty and soaked in flavor. You can choose to dip it in raw egg, make a Tamago-Kake Gohan (raw rice and soy sauce on rice), or just dump it all in together. You choose how to eat it, but you will surely leave fatter and full.
William T — Google review
Come try Tokushima Ramen here during your visit! It's a small, authentic, no-frills ramen shop. Slurp your bowl, eat your rice, drink your beer, and go home to relax. I was happy I came here in particular because the staff member helped me order on the machine because the sun was blasting the screen, and I could barely see anything on it. This shop offers garlic, raw eggs (which you should crack onto your ramen bowl) and plain white rice sides for free. The Tokushima ramen broth is extremely heavy and packed with fatty flavor. It was so delicious, I almost finished up all of the broth, and I had to slowly waddle my way back to my hotel afterwards.

Quite a good experience dining at Ramen Todai. The ramen was al dente and the soup was full of favour. Raw eggs were free. You can feel free to put one on the ramen to enhance the flavour. The restaurant itself was a bit cramped though.
Ken K — Google review
Ramen here was thick and delicious. But, the best part of ramen here was unlimited raw egg supply. We ordered extra rice and poured the extra soup from ramen into the rice and ate with the raw egg. Each of us used uo the 3 raw eggs on our bsr table. Wow. It was soooooo delicious. We really salute the generosity of the owner. 5 stars Total bill for 2 persons' dinner at 1600 yen

Google doesn’t show, but there are various hiking trails. I only saw it when I was walking along the asphalt road to the top and the sign board on there. About 5 different courses. The most obvious one is from the bottom of the ropeway station where there is a temple, at the back of the temple there begins a series of steps. the view is stunning with entire Tokushima lovely. And the hike wasn’t tiring at all. Oh it says the ropeway is under maintenance work until late March 2025. So be aware.
KeoneEwe Y — Google review
Hiked up from the north side as Google suggested. It was less of a hike and more of a scenic walk on the side of the road. Still enjoyed it since the weather was nice and there wasn't much traffic, but would probably get the ropeway in hindsight. My fault for not checking. The view though was amazing, definitely want to come back at nighttime

I took the ropeway up which was a bit expensive for such a short ride. The roundtrip ticket cost 1030 yen but beats walking. When you get to the top, the view of the city was amazing and I would highly recommend coming here in the late afternoon before the sun sets so you can see the city in daylight as well as after dark for the night views. Otherwise, it is very peaceful up here. If you want to clear your mind and have some snacks and drinks, bring some with you! If you are a couple, bring a lock with you as well as there is a section for couples locks to hang 🙂

Very nice 360-degree view of Tokushima and the eastern end of Shikoku island. Sadly not too much too see in the evening (which is when i went) but the Bizan park area is nice for a little stroll.

I enjoyed the drive up to the park with its winding road but when I got to the top I was blown away with the spectacular views of Tokushima and its surrounding area, breath taking. I could see why this area was settled as it is so flat and what seems like a perfect place for a harbour. I wished that I had gone up to the park at night time as I believe that the views would have looked even better with the lights of the city. Fantastic place to visit, I'm glad I went there.

Lovely place to visit but DO NOT try to hike up. There's a few blogs that show hikes up and they are NOT WORTH IT!!! Just take the ropeway as the hike was steep, full of spiders, snakes, and mosquitos and not even very pretty.

Tokushima Totoichiban Arata is a highly enjoyable izakaya restaurant known for its delectable cuisine. Every dish presented at this establishment is superb, especially the exquisitely boiled small octopus in Obanzai.

I was in Tokushima for sightseeing for 4 days and tried to walk in everyday but got rejected even at 5pm ish when the restaurant was still empty. 3 out of the 4 days, their online reservation system suggested that they had availability for party of 1 at the time I walked in. I do not have a Japanese phone number and therefore couldn’t register the Japanese reservation website successfully. In conclusion, I suspect they do not welcome foreigners at all. (Or they do not welcome people who are “underdressed” since I was in my sports/hiking outfit).

All the dishes were delicious and reasonably priced! I was very satisfied. It was a restaurant I would like to visit again if I come to Tokushima again. There was also a counter, so even women could feel comfortable coming alone. The platter of five kinds of obanzai dishes seems to be random depending on the time of day. The portions seemed a little small, but everything was delicious! Three drinks and four dishes cost about 8,000 yen. (Translated by Google) This restaurant offers a relaxing Japanese atmosphere, where you can enjoy a wide variety of dishes made with seasonal ingredients. The first thing that surprised me was the wide variety of food. The nigiri sushi offered a wide variety, including meat and seafood, and each piece was beautiful to look at, carefully prepared and delicious. From grilled spiny lobster and rice with plenty of whitebait, to tender beef steak and deliciously simmered octopus and shellfish, every dish was exquisite, making the most of the ingredients' flavors. It reminded me of the greatness of Japanese cuisine. There was also an extensive selection of alcohol, allowing you to enjoy local sake, shochu, fruit liqueurs, and more, pairing them with your meal. The staff were friendly and helpful, making their recommendations thoughtfully, and the explanations of the dishes were easy to understand. I think this is the perfect restaurant for anyone looking to relax and enjoy delicious Japanese food and drinks in Tokushima. I'll definitely return. Thank you for the meal.

After looking at various restaurants, I decided on sashimi! So, I decided to come here after looking at the photos on the homepage. Now order♪ Assortment of 5 sashimi✨ There are also sake lineups from other prefectures, so choose your favorite♪ Ordered 2 items, Akabu and Kameizumi♪ The sake lineup is good. Of course, Japanese sake is consistently delicious♪ So, it's sashimi. . . Isn't it too different from the photo? picture? ? ? I made a mistake? ? ? I'll post a photo of the site soon. I can't deny that the hurdles were high from the beginning, but it's almost like a photo scam. . . That's why I decided It's different from the photo, right? [This is a fish romance that you can enjoy visually! ] What a comment. . . I was getting excited. Originally, the next one is Kama-yaki + Houou Mida → Black Dragon → Kudoki Jozu! That's what I was imagining, but I was already thinking about going home. Above all, I didn't touch the edamame, which didn't seem to be delicious. So, 390 yen A restaurant that only serves appetizers is not worth evaluating. Is the appetizer the face of the restaurant? ? ? The atmosphere of the shop was mixed with all age groups, and some parts were very noisy. Is there something that can't be done about the lack of energy in the entire city? . . That's too bad. At Kaisenichiba Oragataisho, a seafood restaurant known for its fresh and tasty dishes, customers can enjoy a variety of delectable options. One standout item on the menu is their seafood bowl, which contains an assortment of freshly made fish paste. Priced at a surprisingly reasonable 880 yen, this dish offers excellent value for money. Patrons are treated to a feast for their taste buds as they savor the flavors of the sea.

I ordered a seafood bowl for 980 yen, and my partner ordered a tuna bowl for 880 yen. It's not sushi rice, it's white rice. It came with pickles and miso soup, and the miso soup was delicious. There were seven kinds of toppings: tuna, sea bream, yellowtail, sea bass, salmon roe, and tamago. I left the salmon roe at the end and put it on top with soy sauce to make a bowl of salmon roe and it was delicious♪ All of the ingredients were fresh, especially the tuna bowl that my partner had, which was yellowfin tuna and was a bit light, but the freshness was quite good and the volume was amazing. I saw many other people ordering set meals. The response from the aunty clerk is not very good lol Well, I guess it can't be helped in a place like this. I'll go back and try something different. I can hear whispering while eating and it doesn't make me feel good. Although he was very eager to guide the male customers to their seats and explain the menu, it was definitely unfriendly and inappropriate for me. I have ordered the same menu about 10 times so far, but that day it didn't come with the usual salad and dessert, so when I asked the female waiter, she said brusquely, "Oh, it's just a single item." . If that's the case, you should ask it from the beginning, and I think there's a way to say it. Up until now, I had been served by another person, so I didn't feel particularly uncomfortable, but this time I was extremely uncomfortable. Since you are a good adult, I think you should change your customer service attitude. I liked this restaurant because it had a calm atmosphere, the prices were low, and the food was delicious, but I didn't like it so I won't go there again. Due to my job, I often look for restaurants that cater to foreigners, and this restaurant is of a quality that I would feel comfortable taking my guests there. It's an extremely high-quality restaurant that you wouldn't want outsiders to find out about. It's by no means cheap for everyday use, but it's the perfect solution for special occasions. As an aside, this time I visited with my family and ordered separate dishes for the children, and this too was of amazing quality and price. It's been a while since I've seen my daughter eat her food so silently and with such relish. Of course, there are many tastier restaurants in Tokushima if you pay more, but overall I'll definitely book here again next time.
