The Abashiri Prison Museum offers a unique glimpse into the history of prison life, featuring life-size dioramas depicting daily activities of inmates during the Meiji era. Visitors can explore over 20 buildings, including an exhibition showcasing the evolution of prisons and a canteen serving typical prison meals. Situated near Mt Tento, the museum is part of a larger area that includes the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples and Mt Tento Tent Land car camping area.
A very unique place. You can walk around for about two hours. The main prison building is beautiful, but it has a bit of a smell. There are many human-like mannequins, which feel a bit creepy. Overall, the environment is nice, the area is spacious, and it’s comfortable to walk around.
CHUN W — Google review
Very interesting place to visit. I watched Golden Kamuy which sparked an interest to come here. Quite sombre reading/seeing/watching the history of the place. When we were here, it was blazing hot. Bring an umbrella. We had one and it made things slightly more bearable. There are some provided apparently, but we didn’t see any at all anywhere. There’s one building with air conditioning which provided some reprieve.
Austin N — Google review
The museum is set on the original site of the Abashiri Prison. The prison’s architecture is stunningly preserved, showcasing the five-wing wooden radial prison design, centered around a towering watchtower. The museum goes beyond just buildings by incorporating lifelike mannequins and detailed narratives, immersing visitors in the history and the daily lives of inmates and guards alike.
J T — Google review
If you're in Abashiri, then it's worth the one visit. Relatively expensive tickets compared to other museums etc. Great selection of souvenirs unique to Abashiri as well.
Amatsu — Google review
The Abashiri Prison Museum is an absolute must-see. We visited in February 2025 during the winter, and it was a truly captivating experience. The museum offers an incredible look into the construction of the prison and the historical context behind its existence. The detailed wax figures were effective in bringing the narratives to life. What made our visit even more special was that we were actively watching the Golden Kamuy series, allowing us to immediately connect. Definitely, make time for this!
Sara M — Google review
Abarishi is a good stop on the drive from Kitami to Shiretoko. The prison museum sits on very large grounds and is a made up of restored and replicas of what the prison was like from the late 1800s to early 1900s The attention to details helps to bring one back to how life was like not only for prisoners but also prison guards.
George K — Google review
It doesn’t have a gloomy atmosphere as you might expect from visiting a prison. It has a beautiful ground. There are main cells, bath house, solitude cell as well as a staff quarter.
JSK — Google review
The tickets are pricey at ¥1500, and I would recommend Moyoro Shell Mound, Northern Peoples, and Ice Drift Museum for close to the same price combined! But, this experience is unique and will give hours of enjoyment to tour the grounds and see all of the displays and mannequins that have been set up well. Learning the history of island's other prison was great too!

The Mt.Tentozan tenbōdai observatory, Okhotsk ryu-hyō museum offers a unique experience with displays and films on drift ice, fish tanks, a cafe, and rooftop views of the Sea of Okhotsk. The Liu Ice Hall is divided into two parts - ground and underground. The underground section introduces the net walk ice at the southernmost end of the flow ice with films, exhibitions, and an experience hall in a minus ten-degree environment.
Very interesting place. There are real drift ice for visitors to experience in -15 degree room. The staff is very friendly and offered such a personalized experience for me and my family. Soft caramel sea salt ice cream is delicious and the view from the observatory is priceless. Worth the visit.
Benedict C — Google review
The facility has three floors. The first floor is a souvenir shop. After purchasing a ticket, you go down to the basement level, which includes three sections: 1. Drift ice viewing – You can put on thick winter clothing to experience a temperature of minus 15 degrees Celsius, and there’s an interactive activity where you can freeze a wet towel by swinging it in the air. 2. A multimedia theater – It introduces the phenomenon of drift ice. This area is more suitable for children, with limited visual appeal or playability. The ticket isn’t very cost-effective. On the second floor, there’s a dining area, and the third floor is an observation deck.
LILY D — Google review
A few seconds in the -15 degree celcius room to freeze a towel, feel the ice from the sea of okhotsk, see the interesting tiny creatures from the sea of okhotsk, taste the blue salt ice cream, view the shiretoko mountain range from the roof top….. a good slow moment there.
C S — Google review
Small but interesting museum. Can see some cute marine creatures and touch real ryuhyo ice. The staff are really nice and helpful. The Caramel soft serve with blue salt is tasty. The view seen from the observation deck is superb.

This museum is way cooler (pun intended) than we had expected! And super educational. Short visit, but sweet.
Dan-ya B — Google review
Lovely for an hour or two. Very interesting tanks of drift ice sea creatures. Very cool visual experience in the theatre. The frozen room is a fun experiment but don’t expect kids to stay in there very long!! Im sure the views are amazing but it was cloudy for our visit.

A small but sophisticated museum with abundant knowledge about the social wildlife in a drifted ice area, and delicious ice cream is definitely worth trying! The Italian restaurant on the 2nd floor is also 👍

The Hokkaidōritsu Hoppou-minzoku Hakubutsukan, also known as the Museum of Northern People, is located near Mt Tento in Abashiri. This museum showcases the life and culture of various northern ethnic groups such as the Ainu people in Hokkaido, Eskimos in Greenland, and Sami people in Scandinavia.
We didn't have time for the museum but went to level 3 for the observation deck (free) and this is a hidden gem. The views of the district are stunning! Lots of parking and amazing views.

A small yet beautifully curated museum dedicated to the northern peoples. It’s fascinating to see how simple materials were ingeniously transformed into survival tools, all while maintaining a sense of artistic beauty. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in every artifact on display are truly moving. Definitely worth a visit — highly recommended!
Ayaki H — Google review
Came in early feb. Good informative museum about northern people and their culture. Lots of informative exhibits. Though i find abit lacking on the ainu portion. Lots of videos showcasing the different regional cultures of the northern people. Its quite interesting to know that there are archaeological sites nearby as well. There was a special exhibit there on sturgeons and salmons too. Quite interesting to see baby fishes.
Roxanne L — Google review
Old school style ethnic museum where some English diction may need updating. One great aspect of this museum is the lack of original foreign artifact, I think many/most are reproductions meaning none were stolen.
Shou Z — Google review
A really beautiful museum. The whole exhibition is arranged in an entertaining and informative way. It doesn't just include Ainu, but Inuit and many other norther indigenous people. Unfortunately some of the wording in the English is a bit out of date. We were completely alone in the museum. It was a calm and wonderful experience.
Gina H — Google review
A wonderful museum presenting the lives and cultures of various northern native peoples. A very visual museum with numerous displays, archival documentary footage, and touchscreens with English information. Check the website for a ¥50 discount. There is no cafe or restaurant, but there are vending machines and coin lockers. I spent about 90 minutes here.

Yakiniku restaurant
Yakiniku Abashiri Beer Kan is a lively restaurant located in a quaint town, offering a unique experience where you can grill your own delicious choices. The menu includes colored beer and Abashiri Champon, along with fresh fish at Sushi Yasu. The restaurant is known for its reasonable prices and good food, although it may get busy so making a reservation is recommended. While the staff has limited English proficiency, they are friendly and willing to assist.
it’s a really good experience, the food is so delicious! if you like a food that’s salty it’s a good place for you to go! the dessert is also perfect, i like the taste if the chocolates. The staff is also really nice, they serve the food really fast!

They were able to seat me when I walked in (just 1 person) though they limited me to 1 hour, plenty of time for me though! Ate the beef tongue, very chewy in a good way, and wagyu set, which melts in the mouth 🤤 also had tartar, that was also amazing, I liked the things on the side like apple, egg. Ordered the flight which is not too much for one person thankfully. Paired great with meat 🥩 I was able to get free donut and ice cream for following their IG, honestly was the best way to finish an amazing dinner 🤩 Was a bit expensive, but so worth it
Tuyet P — Google review
The price is reasonable and there are many varieties of choices for yakiniku, seafood is also interesting, they have their own brewery beer, of course I try their famous light blue Drift Ice beer, I highly recommend it, and cold Stone ice cream for ending is just a perfect night🤟
Hayashi ( — Google review
I recently dined at this restaurant, and I must say that the food was exceptional. The staff who served the food were friendly and incredibly helpful throughout the meal. However, I had a less pleasant experience with the cashier at the front desk. She appeared a bit cold and had difficulty communicating effectively with customers. Despite this, I would still recommend the restaurant for its delicious food and excellent serving staff.

The meat and the Ryuhyo Beer were so good!! There was a waitress with super unique vibes. Her service might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we loved her. Also this place gets super packed so I totally recommend booking in advance.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Kangoku Shokudō, located in Abashiri City, Hokkaido, is a unique dining experience that offers visitors the chance to sample prison food inspired by the Meiji-era penal facility. The menu includes options like Prison Food B and Customary Meal B, which are ordered from a ticket vending machine and then served in a tray. Despite its unconventional origins, the food surprises diners with its delicious flavors and healthy qualities.

Another in my wish list in prison museum is eating in this restaurant! They offer prison meal set A and B. Food is simple and nice, clean and nice environment. Order food in the vending machine and kitchen will let you know when your food is ready.
Bulldogmama — Google review
Granted only a short time window to access their lunch menu as in 11am-2:30pm, it is best to not miss out this rather authentic experience! We had both their jail meal set A & B. It was absurdly pleasant! The grilled fish was done right, miso soup and side dishes were all tasty! They also have a wider and more casual menu too all at affordable prices. This might be the only jail museum if not one of the few in the world to serve prison-themed meals to visitors. A good stop for lunch prior to exploring the whole area at your own pace!

(Translated by Google) Visited September 2025 After seeing the "Prison Museum," it was just the right time for lunch, so I stopped in as a souvenir. It's a self-service style, where you purchase your food from the ticket machine located right at the entrance, pick up your meal at the counter when your number is called, and then get your tableware and other items refunded when you're done. Prison Meal A and Prison Meal B were also available, but I decided against them and ordered the "Miso Char Siu (1,000 yen)." It consisted of a few thin slices of char siu, an overly salty soup, and hard-boiled noodles. Overall, the food wasn't even a star.

Izakaya restaurant
The Izakaya restaurant Fukai provided excellent service despite not having a reservation, offering a prompt and helpful guide. They also implemented thorough infection control measures in their store, including careful guidance in the parking lot. The food not only tasted great but also showcased the rich flavors unique to the establishment. For instance, their crab salad boasted a strong crab taste, while the cream of crab miso was both flavorful and luxurious.

Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is a stunning destination in Hokkaido during the spring and summer seasons. The park boasts blooming pink moss phlox slopes, go-kart paths, a fishing pond, bungalows and many photo spots. Admission fee of 500 yen includes free parking while there is also a bus tour available at an extra cost. Walking is recommended to explore the park's beautiful scenery including stairs and mulch trails.
This place boasts some truly special cherry blossoms. The colors are incredibly vibrant, and the sheer scale of the blooms is breathtaking. The scenery is simply stunning, and there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy as well. The only thing you need to worry about is having enough storage on your phone, because you'll be taking tons of pictures!

Found this place through the T.V series (manga adaptation) Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable! by Kai Ikada. I really don't read or watch romance genres and haven't had read any since 2021( in O/L's subject - English Lit story - Twilight of a Crane) . I would like to say this is my first romance (including rom-com and slice of life) story/anime I have come access since Twilight of a Crane wasn't found by me nor I read it intentionally at the beginning... I love both of them but this (Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable!) , I really love this so much. The scenes really are from real-life locations. That's what makes this unique for me. And the love reaction (known as chemistry) going between them and also with others really feels natural especially with the environmental setting, Winter to sprint then summer to autumn. All the pictures/images uploaded with this comment are based on the anime Hokkaido Gals are Super Adorable! and were originally taken from the anime by myself. All the credits goes to the anime producers and author @Kai Ikada. Thank you all for this marvelous creation. Looking forward for an announcement of Season 2 (🥹)

Lovely display of shibazakura. A bit touristy though in terms of how the park is laid out, with "photo spots" for people to have their photos in front of giant hearts etc.
Jonathan M — Google review
Went here during May23, peak blossom. It does look like moss from far and like a carpet too. There are plenty of photo spots and some eateries selling ice creams and fast foods. If you have problems walking, there is a mini bus service going around the park. The driver will drive very slowly so you can take pictures with ease and enjoy the view. We didn't have enough time to explore every inch of the park because of tight schedule. Maybe next time. Highly recommend if northern Hokkaido is part of your plan. From Sapporo will take about 4-6h. So it won't be a day trip.

The flower park in May is stunning with the vastness of the curated vibrant pink moss field. You can easily spend 2-3 hours enjoying various activities such as pond fishing, go-karting, and the free foot Onsen. The entrance fee is ¥600. The train station is also worth visiting for its unique charm.

Train ticket office
Abashiri Drift Ice Sightseeing & Icebreaker Ship offers a range of new facilities for an enhanced drift ice experience, including projection mapping, a drift ice experience terrace replicating daybreak and auroras, and a fantasy theatre with panoramic views. The masses of drift ice surrounding Abashiri bring unique wildlife and picturesque winter scenes to the Okhotsk coast. Visitors can also enjoy Hokkaido's nature and cuisine in other seasons.
Before heading here. It is recommended to make a booking on their website. The site is fully in Japanese and needs a translation. There’s two kind of boat here. Small boat (2 hour) and Big boat (1 hour). The small boat may not run depending on the thickness of the ice. Price is 8000 Yen for small boat and 4500 Yen for big boat. This is adult price. If you decide to call them, be prepared that they do not understand English! All cash payment only. Fantastic experience with super close view of the ice. The big boat has 3 different level to view. At the deck, middle and lower. I suggest splitting the time to view it differently. Highly recommended experience during winter.

Great experience and a must do if you’re in Abashiri. The experience is usually 1 hour (30 minutes out to sea and 30 minutes back). You can see the drift ice only at certain times of the year Jan through to very early March. A call out is that there is no guarantee to see it so please keep that in mind. The boat itself is very warm indoors and you can leave your luggage in coin lockers or for 500 yen with staff in the office while you do the boat tour. If you want to see more photos and tips, feel free to check out my Instagram → @6yearsinjapan

Adults: about 3,800-5,000 yen, children: about 1,900-2,500 yen. A little expensive, but very comfortable. The large ship is stable and comfortable. The interior is fully heated, and you can admire the drift ice through the glass, so you don't have to worry about the cold. It is popular with families and older people. If comfort and stability are important to you, then the ‘Aurora' is more suitable than the 'Garinko'.
T. G — Google review
Must experience this if you are around the area! However, since the drift ice can only be controlled by mother earth, make sure to check beforehand on their website to see if you can see the drift ice before you plan to visit. If there is no drift ice, it might not be worth it. Also beware of sea sickness! Bring meds or at least be prepared for some big waves. There are bags you can use but I've seen people throw up.

So incredibly fortunate as we were able to do this on the one day we had at Abashiri and we were told that the weather had prevented sightseeing the four previous days. So we were in luck and it was just wonderful. We saw the drifts and lots of wild life as well. Good cruise very professional.
Ross D — Google review
I visited on February 27th on a sunny day and the drift ice was at its peak, with the beautiful Shiretoko mountain range as a stunning backdrop. However, it was quite crowded and the ice breaking ship seemed old. I recommend making a reservation in advance as people from all over the world, as well as Japan, flock to see the drift ice during its peak season. While the ice breaking ship trip can get a bit boring after a while, I was still happy because I got to see the drift ice up close at its fullest. Overall, this is a very touristy trip, but if you're interested in seeing the drift ice up close with the beautiful Shiretoko mountain range, it's definitely worth checking out.

Train station
Abashiri Station serves as the main transportation hub in Abashiri, offering access to various services such as taxi stands, car rental agencies, and a Tourist Information Center. The station is the terminal for the Limited express Okhotsk from Asahikawa and provides bus stops and schedules to the airport. Visitors can seek guidance at the Tourist Information Center for booking tours and receive assistance with English-speaking staff.
Not so busy. Taxi stand, car rental agency, Tourist Information Center are just outside the station. JR Senmo Line釧網本缐 On the Senmo Line, which connects Kushiro and on Abashiri, you can enjoy the scenery of the Kushiro marshes, with a total length of 166.2km.

A small train station with limited facilities. The tickets are checked manually. There is a small waiting area , just a small stall selling bento. There are coin lockers next to the tourist office. Bus Stop #1 outside the station by the roadside has scheduled by buses going to the airport or the Aurora drifting ice breaker terminal.
KH W — Google review
At night, Abashiri Station is completely unmanned, emphasising the quiet, rural charm of Hokkaido's regional stations. Although small, it has a certain nostalgic atmosphere, reflecting the simplicity and remoteness of the area.
T. G — Google review
If you need any guidance in booking the tour then visit the Tourist Information center inside the station complex, they have very helpful staff members, they speak English, I have attached the selfie picture with him, please show this if you visit. He was super helpful in my taxi booking to Cape Notoro, Taxi is little expensive, they charge like 8K to 10K for return at Station, the taxi driver was helpful, Driver was waiting for me to take pictures at Cape Notoro and then dropped back. I liked one of the item in the Information Center but the manager didn’t sale to me, It was a big sad moment for me because I really liked that item, didn’t find similar looking item elsewhere. There is no bus from Abashiri station to Cape Notoro so, only having expensive taxi option, I would stay its a worth to pay for such a beautiful landscape and experience. I would highly recommend to stay few nights in Abashiri and then see the places, I was unable to find any hotels at Booking dot com so, travelled back to Kushiro. Please book your hotels minimum 2-3 weeks in the advance.

Ice cream shop
Gelateria Rimo is a must-visit for gelato enthusiasts, as it offers an exquisite selection of flavors crafted by the talented executive chef Satoshi Takada. The shop has gained popularity nationwide due to its award-winning gelato, with fans flocking from all over the country to savor the skillfully produced treats. Visitors can indulge in a variety of classic and innovative flavors, such as rich hazelnut, refreshing mojito, and aromatic basilico.
Such lovely and creamy gelato, I didn't expect the gelato to be so good! We both had a double scoop and shared. We had the special crab gelato and the cassata and the magico and pistachio in the other cup. The crab was unexpectedly good and paired well with the cassata. I have no idea what a magico is, but it was just amazing, pistachio was also a delight. Lots of parking and a very clean toilet.
Karl C — Google review
This gelato shop showcases creativity with a diverse selection of flavors, from classics like pistachio, caramel, and rum raisin to local specialties such as corn, pumpkin, and matatabi. Seasonal options like mojito in summer and chestnut in autumn add further variety. Made with locally sourced, low-temperature pasteurized milk from Abashiri, the gelato is undeniably rich and flavorful. Yet, ironically, the pure "milk" flavor remains the standout choice—simple, yet the most delicious.
T. G — Google review
Not all flavours are served ; but what were available today were ok . I didn’t get to try my rum and raisin . We had Pistachio , chestnut , latte flavour instead . Then we ordered extra serving of pistachio again as we find pistachio is the best flavour ! Recommended to try if you are around the vicinity, worth the calories!

Very easy to reach from Abashiri Station. Just wait Memanbetsu Airport Line bus at 16.15 at Platform 2, 15 minutes later you arrive in front of Rimo Gelateria! The creams are soft, milky, the taste is good. I like Hojicha (Japanese Roasted Tea) flavor.

Mouth-watering gelato place! Risu no mori provides a variety of flavors; some are classics, others are creative! Hazelnut flavor was very rich, mojito was refreshing as hell! Basilico boasted its straightforward basil aromas! If I had more time, I would have had more than 10 flavors. You can also find gelato packaged in cups. They are stored in fridges on the left side.

I CAME THERE BECAUSE I SAW THE GOOD REVIEWS,BUT WHO KNEW THAT IT WAS NOT GOOD.I ORDERED A DOUBLE SCOOP OF ICECREAM,CHOCOLATE AND CHOCOLATE CHIPS.COSTED 600YEN. THERE WERE LIMITED SEATS. I WOULD ACCEPT IF IT WAS CHEAP BUT LITERALLY ONE SMALL DOUBLE SCOOP ICE CREAM COST 600YEN ,SERIOUSLY , I FELT LIKE I GOT SCAMMED. I WOULD ACCEPT IF IT WAS TASTY,BUT NO IT WAS AVERAGE. PLUS THE CHOCOLATE ICECREAM'S TOPPINGS TASTED A BIT WEIRD AND SOUR!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU TO COME HERE AND GET SCAMMED LIKE ME!!!!😡😡😡

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Okhotsk Chipmunk Park is a charming ethical zoo located near the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples. The park offers visitors the opportunity to interact with adorable chipmunks in a spacious environment. For an entrance fee, guests receive a bag of food to feed the chipmunks by hand. Visitors can walk among the chipmunks and enjoy watching them play and eat from their hands. The park also features a gift shop with cute souvenirs.
Not just a place for kids, adults will definitely enjoy Chipmunks too. Visited in early July. No long queue, just a short wait and a briefing on how to behave in the park, and handle the chipmunks. The briefing is done with cute visual placards, and live action, so it's very universal. The area is small, but different parts are decorated differently so you can observe the chipmunks in different environments. Definitely buy the nuts so that the chipmunks will come to you. Even if you don't want to feed them, just sitting quietly at the benches will let you see the adorably active chipmunks. Remember to keep your excite in check as they are very fragile and sensitive creatures. Also check out the souvenir shop.
William N — Google review
Absolutely waste of time to detour to reach the place. There was along queue of people waiting with the kids with no one informing what’s going on or any information provided on how long to wait. We waited for about 15min in the darkness of being trapped and left without visiting. They mismanaged the place and many people with kids also seen leaving. Some of them were locals. Visit at your own risk if you have time to waste on such waiting.
Ravish M — Google review
This was a very special experience. It's a quiet place, on a country road, by the shores of Lake Abashiri. You need to be very quiet when you are with the chipmunks as they are very small and nervous. Follow all the instructions exactly to ensure the animals' safety. Find a place to sit, wait with food, and the chipmunks will come to you. Photos are OK, but no flash. I would advise getting there before it opens at 10:00, and going in with the first group. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The gift shop is very small. This is not about the souvenirs. It's about the cutest experience you'll probably ever have.
Pamela A — Google review
Love it here! Absolutely fun feeding at least a hundred chipmunks!! Bought the biggest pack of feed for 550 yen! Yet still not enough for our kids to feed them. We will be visiting them again tomorrow. Too cute to miss!! ❤️❤️❤️

Please wear shoes. Chipmunks can't tell if my toes were a big walnut. Buy Chipmunk food at the location to feed. Information before entry was entertaining. Please do not step on Chipmunks as 15 lives have taken so far.
KH T — Google review
There is staff to do crowd control and brief the customers on the dos and donts. It is not a big place but one can surely spend quite a while in the park feeding, photographing and watching the super cute chipmunks. They are very used to humans now so they will dart around freely and come right up for food.
Brokenrunner — Google review
My first encounter with chipmunks!! I thought chipmunk is around the same size as squirrel. So, I was very surprised when I saw the chipmunks. They were so tiny!!! Super adorable. 100% chance to feed and take good photos. Worth the visit. Remember to check out the closing days when you’re planning the itinerary! If you’re traveling with kids, you got to be sure that they are not the kind that run around everywhere. Because they might step on the chipmunk. The lady shared that 10+ chipmunks had died in the park due to people not following the rules. It’s quite sad.
WL T — Google review
It's really cute and the animals are well taken care of. Tip: the small bag is more than enough, the chipmunks are very well fed from all the visitors 😆

Scenic spot
メルヘンの丘, or Fairy Tale Hill, is a picturesque rest stop along the route from Memanbetsu Airport to Abashiri in Hokkaido. Surrounded by vast fields and Japanese larch trees, it's a popular spot for photography enthusiasts seeking Instagram-worthy shots. The seven larch trees on the hill create a charming scene, especially during sunrise or sunset. Each season brings its own enchanting transformation to this fairytale-like landscape.
Yes, it's just a stop on the road, but it's magically picturesque. We arrived late on a sunny autumn afternoon with long shadows from the trees falling across the fields. We were also lucky enough to have a tractor working slowly along the ridge!

Surprisingly beautiful at sunset. Even more surprisingly it's a private farm but does not charge anything, the government also build a free roadside carpark just for visitor to take photo. Both my eyes and heart are touched.

is approximately 1km from memanbetsu station, actually just a field with planted trees with no intention of being popular, but very instagrammable, there is a short stop for cars to pull over to take photos. Entering people's fields is of course prohibited. I took the photo in December- early snowfall. my hands really hurt but the blue sky and white fields were very beautiful. just wish there were seats to enjoy it like a bus stop.
Kiku K — Google review
Stretching as far as the eye can see, the vast fields of Hokkaido bask in the sunlight, painting a picture straight out of a fairytale. Each season brings a unique transformation to this enchanting landscape. Take a leisurely stroll through these fields and immerse yourself in the tranquility that surrounds you. If you find yourself with some free time during your travels, be sure to visit this hidden gem and experience the true beauty of Hokkaido.

Food Court Kinema-kan offers a wide variety of delicious and affordable meal options with a stunning ocean view. The dining experience includes self-service where patrons can enjoy their meals while overlooking the Abashiri River. The establishment provides multilingual assistance and requires guests to return their own plates, creating a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of bygone eras.
Delicious and warm broth with seafood while enjoying an amazing view.

The restaurant is located at the second floor of the building, with great view of the Abashiri coast with drift ice (during the season). You order the food at the machine by the entrance, and cashless payment available. Once purchased the ticket, feel free to get a seat and wait for your ticket number to be announced once the food is ready, though they will only announce it in Japanese. I ordered the recommended champon noodles. The soup was little bit salty but tasted good in general, with two dried scallops inside.
CS T — Google review
A restaurant located within a road side stop with lots of souvenirs options. We had katsu curry and noodle soup - the broth was super rich and yummy and curry was good curry.
Bonsai N — Google review
Simple, unspectacular fare. My friend & I order the champion set (soy ramen + fried rice) and sushi donburi. General taste is alright, nothing unspectacular but you probably will not complain about food either. I personally would have walked 2 mins to the building just BESIDE Ryohyo Glass Museum, where's a decent looking donburi and ramen shop.

They have restaurant at the second floor, selling Japanese seafoods like ramen, sashimi, curry, kanimeshi, and champon. Meal order processed by vending machine, so we just only wait after ordering, and they will call you with number of ticket you get. Do not forget to return your dishes after next to the kitchen door (may be confusing for some foreigners since no explanation available).

(Translated by Google) This food court is located inside the roadside station, Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri. It is fun because the interior is like a Showa-era movie theater, probably because Abashiri was famous for filming movies set there. You pay in advance at the ticket machine in front of the store. You can also use cashless payment such as credit cards. You can eat local gourmet food for 1,000 to 2,000 yen per item, so it's very cost-effective. After much deliberation, I decided on the most popular dish, Abashiri Chanpon. The light soup with scallops, clam cabbage, and onions matches the thick noodles. Pickled ginger was served separately, so you can add it to your liking. The main dish is seafood, so it's very filling, but you won't be left over after eating it. The sweet cabbage was also delicious. When in doubt, go for the Chanpon! I recommend it.

Known for selling ekiben (bento/lunch box sold on station). Seems pretty popular since I got recommended by a local and their flyer can be found in many tourist spots. (Translated by Google) I had the "Crab rice and drinks set" at a restaurant attached to an ekiben shop inside Abashiri Station. It cost 1,500 yen with their specialty crab rice pot and Sapporo Classic draft beer, but I was surprised at how delicious the crab in the crab rice and the salmon roe and scallops on the side were. The owner said, "We are particularly particular about our snow crab and salmon roe," so this price with draft beer was a great deal. This set came with piping hot soup, and when you're about halfway through, you can change the flavor to dashi chazuke. This was also excellent. It was so delicious that I also bought a crab salmon roe bento, which was topped with a generous amount of their signature crab salmon roe. This was also very delicious. Even if the bento is not in stock at the shop inside the station, if you ask the owner, they may make one at the shop in front of the station and bring it to you if you can wait a little. As an aside, there are no convenience stores near Abashiri Station, but they sell canned beer here. They were selling a 500ml bottle of Sapporo Classic for the bargain price of 330 yen. The store on the premises is generally open until 3:00 p.m. It was a place I'd like to visit again. Totally recommend this place. A different kind of lamb than what we would usually eat (as Europeans), grilled with soy sauce and soy sprouts. Also a different kind of lunch than we've had in the past weeks!

(Translated by Google) I visited Matsuo Jingisukan Yobito for my first Jingisukan experience. I was confused and didn't know how to grill it, but the owner patiently explained it to me, putting me at ease. It was a simple style, with the meat grilled in the center of the Jingisukan pot and bean sprouts simmered around it, but the flavor of the lamb really came through and it was delicious. There was no unpleasant odor at all, and the special sauce further enhanced the flavor. I was surprised that they served a raw egg as a service. When I dipped the meat in the beaten egg, it had a mellow taste almost like sukiyaki, and it was absolutely delicious. The simple combination of just meat and bean sprouts brought out the quality of the ingredients, and although it was simple, it was very satisfying. This is a famous restaurant that I would highly recommend even to first-timers. 居酒屋和助 is a cozy and inviting establishment where people can unwind and enjoy drinks in a relaxed setting. It stands out as one of the few open shops amidst the closures caused by the current pandemic, adding to its allure. Although it may have limited accessibility from various hotels, it still offers a worthwhile experience for patrons seeking authentic local cuisine. The menu boasts an array of delectable dishes, leaving visitors satisfied with their culinary choices.

After landing at Memanbetsu Airport and sightseeing in Abashiri, I'm staying in Ozora Town tonight with the theme of "a night's stay with no meals and a meal at a nearby izakaya". Dinner at this place, which looked good. The appetizer was a sashimi platter. The appetizer was only 500 yen, but it was pretty nice. The ken was also delicious. I ordered Atka mackerel and mutton skewers, Zangi, and Yakko. The Atka mackerel was huge. The sauce on the mutton tasted like it was pre-made, so I didn't like it. It depends on the person. The Zangi was deep-fried at a low temperature and had a juicy flavor. It was easy to eat with a light garlic soy sauce. The Yakko was huge. Delicious tofu. Local izakayas are the joy of traveling. This was probably the only izakaya I could find, so I went in without any expectations, but I was not disappointed. The oysters were fresh and large, and the grilled lamb and eel skewers were delicious. The salad was also fresh and impeccable. The 500 yen appetizer was a sashimi platter, but it was beyond average. Cape Notoro is a stunning destination featuring a solitary lighthouse that serves as a guide to the Sea of Okhotsk. Visitors can marvel at the panoramic vistas of Lake Notaro, Tokoro Town's coastline, the Okhotsk Sea, and the majestic Shiretoko Mountains. The Kando-no-Michi Viewpoint near Mt.
Visited 25th Feb 2025. Amazing sunset spot / twilight + drift ice view which is less than 30mins from town centre. Plenty of parking spots during winter. Slightly higher ground to watch the drift ice in winter, although you could always see drift ices throughout this beautiful town. We spotted deers on the way driving up to this place. 😊

Beautiful lighthouse on black and white. Easily reached from the car park. It's atop a cliff so the view of the sea is great too. What's interesting perhaps is the surface isn't painted. The black and white are tiles! There's also a monument beside it that's work a walk to.

I visited Cape Notoro in September and had a great experience. The weather was cooling and a bit windy, but overall very good and comfortable. The view of the Sea of Okhotsk with the Notoro Lighthouse is stunning, and on clear days you can see the Shiretoko mountain range. Althoughthe summer flowers were gone, the cape still had a calm charm with early autumn in the air. What makes it even better is that it's only a short drive from Abashiri town, so it's very easy to visit without much hassle.

500m short walk from lighthouse to the monument at the other end. Nice view. Came here in early Jun 2025 so no crowd.

Visiting Cape Notoro during winter was quite an adventure! The drive here was challenging, with the road covered in frozen snow that felt as hard as rock and very slippery. If you plan to drive during winter, please be extremely careful. But the effort was totally worth it - the view of the Cape Notoro with drift ice was absolutely amazing! We spent about an hour walking along the cape and soaking in the stunning scenery. However, the wind was quite strong, so make sure to dress warmly, especially with gloves and ear protection. Overall, a fantastic experience but be prepared for the winter conditions.

The Moyoro Shell Mound Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the culture of the Okhotsk people who inhabited Hokkaido around 1300 years ago. Through archaeological studies and excavations at the Moyoro Kaizuka ruin near the Abashiri River, this museum sheds light on the lifestyle, beliefs, and practices of these ancient people. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing various aspects of Okhotsk culture such as housing, graves, and shell mounds.
A small but interesting local museum. Nice that they have outdoor exhibits too. I learned a lot about Okhotsk culture and practices. They have audio tours in various languages too, if you don’t read Japanese.
Caroline N — Google review
It was a pretty neat museum with interesting displays! But is small and has little english (?- see below). •Bottom line: if you have extra time in Abashiri (I'd say 90 minutes to include getting there), you should go. If you have to choose between this museum or the other 3 on the bus route (prison, northern peoples, drift ice), I'd say go to the other 3 (especially if you'll go to the northern peoples museum, the content is fairly similar and there's more to see there). I spent about 30 minutes in this museum (not including getting there). 🌐Another reviewer said there was an English audio guide included, but it was not offered to me, I only got the pamphlet with a small bit of information. That said, it was a pretty visual museum, so I think it would still be enjoyable to someone who doesn't understand Japanese, but being able to read some Japanese does help. 📖I was able to gather: the Moyoro people inhabited this area before the Ainu many centuries ago. They worshipped bears as gods, and buried their deceased with pots on their head. ❄️The archaeological grounds outside (free) are covered in snow in winter, so you can't walk to see them.

But it's worth it, as the facility, which was renovated and reopened in 2013, provides a clear and easy-to-understand introduction to the Moyoro people, the former inhabitants of the area around the Moyoro Shell Mound, and their cultural characteristics. The Moyoro people's culture is the Okhotsk culture, which is different from the culture of contemporary Honshu and the later Ainu culture. Many of its details are still shrouded in mystery. The museum is lined with models of the Moyoro people's exteriors, recreated dwellings, numerous excavated artifacts such as pottery, and even video footage, giving you a sense of understanding the mysterious Okhotsk culture. The exhibits were fascinating, but I was a little concerned about the low number of visitors, even though it was a Sunday during the summer holidays. Ōmagari Kohan Enchi is a stunning park featuring vibrant cosmos flowers in full bloom. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque scenery from various vantage points, including an elevated observation spot and a charming path through the flower garden. The park offers free admission and ample parking. While strolling among the red, white, and pink cosmos, guests can appreciate the beauty of these blossoms swaying in the wind.
Beautiful a bit far from the bus stop but it's free,, sunflowers are very tiny, dwarf type unfortunately like facing away from us ... but unique. spacious with a beautiful mountain backdrop. cismos is also very beautiful, not as wide as the one in enggaru but very good for photos,,, there is a flower corridor without barriers so it's very aesthetic.. this is free without any charges. there are no drink shops so bring your own drinks. there are also no adequate places to sit.. too bad.. lack of shelter when tired or hot. but still worth visiting in September. the sun can also bloom in September,, the sun and cosmos together like summer and autumn hand in hand

Abashiri City Folk Museum

Local history museum
The Abashiri City Folk Museum, completed in 1936, is one of the oldest museums in Hokkaido and a registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The museum offers diverse exhibits showcasing the region's rich nature and history from ancient times to the present day. Visitors can explore stuffed animals, fish models, Ainu life displays, and exhibits about life in the Showa era. The quaint stained glass adds to the historic ambiance of the building.
I came here for the Abashiri Showa era’s exhibition, the exhibition is small but it’s well planned and you get to see every angle of the living style under the Showa era. Ground floor has tons of specimens and they all look super real…… you’ll get to know the animals near by Abashiri area. They also have several photo books for you to understand plants and animals from different months near the museum :) it’s so cute. On the second floor you get to see the aboriginal ppl’s life style and Abashiri’s history. It took me around 2 hours to finish exploring this museum. English is not available here, but Google translate is quite accurate. Not all the items have a story so you can just come and enjoy + explore. The fee is only 120 yen for adult. The building itself also looks interesting (feels like it’s from the Ghibli’s movie), the window on the second floor is amazing :) The only thing that needs to remind tourists is —— you need to climb a bit (the museum is on a small hill) if you have leg or hip issue, will suggest you to take a taxi or drive here.

(Translated by Google) This museum is located in a corner of Katsuragaoka Park. The building's innovative exterior was completed in 1936 (Showa 11) before the war, and it will soon be 90 years old. The museum was originally established to preserve materials from the Moroyo Shell Mound. Admission is charged 120 yen. The first floor of the museum is filled with stuffed specimens and models of animals, birds, and fish found in Abashiri and other parts of Hokkaido. The second floor houses exhibits on Abashiri's history and culture in general, including Ainu-related exhibits. The exhibition room, with its creaky floors, exudes a Showa-era atmosphere. Although there are many exhibits, there isn't much organized explanation, and the exhibits seem somewhat disorganized. A closer look reveals many valuable documents, but the old-fashioned display style may make it difficult for today's children to understand. Admission fee is 120 yen for adults. The building was completed in 1936. It is said to be the first museum designed and constructed in Hokkaido. You can look up at the building's red dome from the town of Abashiri. The stained glass is beautiful, and the spiral staircase inside is also elegant. The floors creak because it is an old building. There are five exhibition rooms. The left side of the first floor introduces the geology of Abashiri and a large bird fossil (Hokkaidornis abashiriensis), and there are stuffed marine mammals and saltwater fish. The right side of the first floor displays stuffed mammals, birds, and freshwater fish. There is also an introduction to invasive species. The left side of the second floor is an exhibition about the Ainu. On the right side of the second floor, there are Jomon, Satsumon, and Okhotsk pottery, as well as displays of tools from each era. Highlights include statues of bears and sea animals made from their tusks. (Translated by Google) Visited in June 2025. According to Wikipedia, the museum was founded in 1936 by Yonemura Kioye, who discovered the Moyoro Shell Mound, with the support of the Sumitomo zaibatsu to prevent the scattering of artifacts. The museum is surprisingly compact, and you'll finish your tour in no time. A wide variety of stuffed animals from Hokkaido are on display. Architecturally, the building, completed in 1936, is typical of this era, with beautiful designs influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright and Art Deco. The museum is enjoyable even just for the building, designed by Yoshiya Tagami, one of Hokkaido's leading architects. Among the exhibits are photographs of the city of Abashiri from the Taisho era, a time when the railway opened in Abashiri and the economy boomed during World War I (known as the "Aomame Boom"). It was also a time when agricultural migration to the surrounding wilderness dramatically increased, causing the population to skyrocket (from 6,000 to 30,000).

(Translated by Google) This was my second time visiting Abashiri Shrine. My last visit was in April six years ago, back in the Heisei era. I parked my car in front of the third torii gate and entered the shrine grounds. The plaque reads "Protection of the Northern Seas" rather than the name of the shrine. The plaque clearly explains the role the shrine played in Abashiri at the time it was built. There were two pairs of lion-dog statues on the side of the approach to the shrine. The worship hall beyond that appears to be a very old building. I proceeded to the front of the worship hall and offered my prayers. After that, I went to Abashiri Gokoku Shrine, a shrine within the shrine grounds, and offered my prayers. When I visited the shrine office, I was told that the goshuin stamps would be written in advance. However, when I asked for one, they wrote it in my goshuin book. I gratefully accepted it and left Abashiri Shrine. (Translated by Google) Enjoy horseback riding and some yakiniku. This is the perfect spot, brimming with Showa-era vibes. There are several different horseback riding courses available, and I tried the Lake Course and the Full-Enjoy Course. The Lake Course takes you from the ranch to nearby Lake Mokoto, then around the lake before returning. The key point is that it's on the lake, and on my experience, the horse waded through the reeds and onto the lakebed exposed by low tide. It's quite wild, as you might not be able to make it back to shore if you fall off (although there was an instructor on hand, so even children could handle it). The Full-Enjoy Course is 120 minutes long, so you can really enjoy horseback riding. It's a pretty wild course, taking you from the ranch through the hills, down to the river, and all the way to the coast. On the sandy coastline, you can trek along the water's edge while taking in the views of the Shiretoko Peninsula. If you're feeling ambitious, you can even try the Abarenbo Shogun style. On the Lake Course and Full Enjoyment Course, you can cross a crosswalk with a traffic light 🚥 while riding your horse. If you have a staff member take your photo here, you'll get a Beatles-inspired Abbey Road-style shot, which is highly recommended. One thing to note is that the instructor is a very nice guy, but since he lives in the great outdoors, he can be a bit wild and casual. So, it might be difficult for those who are more sensitive and meticulous. Of course, I had no trouble at all (or rather, I found his casualness to be quite comfortable). Honestly, all the yakiniku at the restaurant is delicious. You can't go wrong. The Sea of Okhotsk stretches out before you, and when you open the window, a cool breeze blows in like a natural air conditioner. It may be commonplace for locals, but enjoying yakiniku while feeling the breeze from the Sea of Okhotsk was a rare experience. If you're in Abashiri, there's no reason not to visit. This is that kind of spot. Seems popular with the locals serving piping hot ramen. The signature Doro Ramen has a really thick broth, but it's not overpowering. Comes with bamboo shoots, charsiu, and seaweed. The Kuro Shio ramen on the other hand has a light soup, but it's topped with black garlic oil. Both ramen cost JPY900. The zangi with negi (JPY350 for 2 pieces) is crunchy with a nice tangy twist.

Gyudon restaurant
In addition to the regular beef bowls, this establishment also offers hotpot and curry rice options. They have various serving sizes available. The food is delectable and highly recommended for those seeking a change from sushi and ramen. It is a typical chain restaurant that serves both beef and pork bowls, but at an affordable price without compromising on taste. The eatery operates almost 24/7, ensuring that customers can always satisfy their cravings here.
They have the best strawberry milkshake in Hokkaido. The staff is very polite and friendly. Love their digital ordering system

Day 4

Proximity is everything
For day 4, we bundled attractions like Hokkaido Okhotsk Park, Tentorando and Mount Tento and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

This park, known as Okhotsk Park, offers a pleasant environment for leisure activities amidst nature. It may not be the "Okhotsk Chipmunk Park" mentioned on Google, but it still provides plenty of facilities for children to have an enjoyable time. Parents should allocate sufficient time for this park due to its diverse offerings. With delightful scenery and favorable weather conditions, it is ideal for picnics and experiencing tranquility.
Nice scenes with perfect weather. We are so happy for picnic and enjoy the peace around the park

This is a nice park but it's not the "Okhotsk Chipmunk Park" at Google says, it's just the "Okhotsk Park". The actual chipmunk park is called "オホーツクシマリス公園" and its address is "Japan, 〒099-2421 Hokkaido Prefecture, Abashiri, Yobito, 352".

(Translated by Google) I will post this as a comment on my first visit to the "Tentozan Observatory" on June 19, 2025. Tentozan was named after the feeling of "ascending to the heavenly city." At an altitude of over 200m, it offers a panoramic view of the Sea of Okhotsk, Lake Abashiri, Lake Notoro, Lake Tofutsu, Lake Mokoto, and the Shiretoko mountain range. It was designated a national scenic spot in 1938 and is also part of the Abashiri Quasi-National Park. Tentozan Observatory is an integrated facility with the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum, and while the museum requires an admission fee, the Tentozan Observatory itself (the observation terrace on the 3rd floor of the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum) is free to use, and you can reach the observation deck by taking the elevator or stairs to the left of the reception desk after entering the main entrance of the building. (If you go to the right from the reception, you will find the paid Drift Ice Museum area, so if you know the division between free and paid areas, you won't be confused.) There are opening and closing times, but what's amazing is that it's "open all year round, even during the New Year holidays." It opens early on New Year's Day, and you can see the first sunrise from here. You can see the "Diamond Shari Mountain," which rises from the summit of Shari Mountain, also known as one of the 100 famous mountains, and the eastern sky, sea, and land all turn orange. If possible, I would like a space on the upper level so that I can see a complete 360-degree panorama from a fixed point without seeing the elevator room or staircase hall.

From sage to sunflowers, the park is a picturesque display carefully arranged in rows of contrasting hues. (Translated by Google) I use this campsite every summer. It's a great place to camp for free, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Because it's free, the toilets are Japanese-style and not very clean, but they do have a kitchen, which is helpful. I'm always impressed by the beautiful sunsets. However, since it's by the lake, there are quite a lot of mosquitoes...I was bitten. There are a lot of motorbikes there. Also, since it faces the road, it's not very quiet...I might choose a different campsite from next year. Cafe
Cafe&cake FUKA is a popular sweets shop located at the foot of Mt. Tentozan in Abashiri, offering carefully made cakes, baked sweets, and pudding using local Hokkaido ingredients such as pasteurized milk from the area. The terrace provides a full view of Lake Abashiri. Visitors can enjoy a variety of cake flavors that strike the perfect balance between sweetness and flavor without being overwhelming.
Visited on January 30, 2025. The cakes, puddings and coffee are all delicious, thank you for your hard work in making them.

This patisserie is a perfect example of modern interior design, pastry aesthetics and efficient operations. While visually impressive, the actual product quality doesn't quite match the price, which is on the high side. Service is of a consistently high standard, although there was a minor misstep when the self-serve water station was left uncleaned and unavailable - eventually rectified. The atmosphere has an upmarket charm that attracts a refined clientele, but remains welcoming to first-time visitors.

Stopped by this cafe which is located conveniently along the way to my next destination. Upon arrival, the cafe was full, so I opted for a takeout of their strawberry cake and coffee. I must say that the strawberry cake was one of the best I've ever had! It had the perfect balance of sweetness and the cream was light and didn't make me feel sick. The coffee was decent, but nothing out of the ordinary. The cafe is clean and cozy with friendly staff. Overall, it was a pleasant stop for a quick bite.

Steak house
Family restaurant
I absolutely adore every aspect of this establishment. I have never encountered a place that includes grapes in their unlimited salad bar. The steak is consistently warm because your plate comes with a petite and charming device that allows for personal frying. The employees are delightful, an English menu is available, although instructions on cooking the hamburger could be clearer to avoid any potential health risks. This eatery is perfect for families and those passing time while waiting for trains due to its excellent service as a family-friendly restaurant.
Great meat options, pescatarians and vegetarians may find value in the salad bar but this please has great steak sets. Service is friendly and the tablet ordering system makes things easy. Highly recommend if you’re in town.

Spacious and bright place. Great for late night food if you are looking for food after 8pm as it closed at midnight. Portion maybe a bit small but just nice for me. Average spent about JPY 2500 per person. Had steak which was not too bad though no option to choose how well the steak to be done. Didn't choose the buffet salad.
