Nestled in the stunning landscapes of Hokkaido, Hoshino Resorts Tomamu Unkai Terrace offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. This alpine observation deck is accessible via a scenic cable car ride that whisks you to breathtaking heights. Here, visitors are treated to mesmerizing views of a sea of clouds enveloping the mountains, creating an ethereal atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly.
It's one of the astonishing views ever during this winter season. I'm lucky that the weather is clear on the second day. Look at the beautiful winter wonderland. Access by gondola and subjected to, on the day weather condition.

Unkai Experience. Didn’t get to see with a 40% rate. It’s like a lottery. Hotel guest get to enter for free with a shuttle bus arriving from the entrance lobby for pick up. The gondola takes a mere 5 mins to reach the top. Once you are there, there is a cafe that fills up quickly. Couple of vantage points. Then the rush to visit the other amenities for an instagram shot.
Mervyn P — Google review
Visited on 7 Aug 2025. It opens at 5am, last cable car up is at 8am and the last cable car down is 9am so plan your sleep timing accordingly. The weather was not the most ideal when I went there but the mist dissipate to form the sea of clouds that everyone went there for. So if you have time, do wait in the cafe. You might end up liking the experience. The different spots are several minute walks away from each other with the rope bed, wedge deck and swing being uphill. Also the staff stationed at the ropebed can help you take group photos. Definitely worth the extra effort to come here.

The gondolas open early in the morning at 5:00am, but they often operate earlier, and during busy times there is a numbered ticket system, so it is advisable to arrive by 4:00am or 4:30am at the latest if possible. I arrived at around 4:40am and the gondola was already running, numbered 101, and I was able to board the gondola at around 5:20am. The view from the cloud walk on the deck jutting out from the cliff was fantastic, not only on the tower side but also on the west side of the valley, where the cloud sea covered the whole valley. We stayed two nights again, this time hoping to see a sea of clouds, and enjoyed a good view on the first day with clear skies ☀️. We were very happy to see a sea of clouds on the second day. The day before, the cloud sea rate was 30%, but we were super lucky. ✌️
Google review
This place will either be great or ordinary depending on your luck and the weather. We arrived at 0600 and there was already a queue of around 45 minutes to buy tickets and take the cable car up, so definitely plan ahead and check their website as it'll be updated with the probability of cloud formation and queue times. Generally, the earlier the better as the clouds tend to dissipate even before 0800. On a good day though, once you're up there it's a beautiful walk and experience to be above the clouds. You'll also get some fairly unique photos too.
Bent Z — Google review
Amazing! Quite lucky today as yesterday there was no unkai despite higher probability than today. Very well organized, the queue at 4.30am already at least 100 people in queue. There is about 40 lots at gondola base for parking otherwise plenty more a few steps away. Do not follow google map to drive here!!! You need to take the gondola

Place wanna visit again, hard to see cloud sea if u visit just 1night 2 days, recommend to visit more than a few days and try every dawn for it. We visited in early july and the sun rises at 3:45, need to go at the first time when the lift counter opens, at 4:30 to the front, unless u need to wait for more than 30 min to 1:30hours if late. Beautiful scenery, worth visiting.

Cloud pool(クラウドプール)

Observation deck
Cloud Pool, a popular spot at the location, is designed to resemble a massive hammock and is a favorite among visitors for photo opportunities. The cloud-shaped hammock offers stunning views and is highly recommended for those looking to capture memorable moments. It's advisable to dress warmly with jackets due to the low temperatures on the mountain, especially in June. Additionally, hotel guests can enjoy priority access by taking the bus to board the earliest cable car to the hill.
There is always a long queue here too and long waiting times. If the cloud sea is high you can get some interesting photos. But in the morning it's backlit, so if you don't change the settings on your phone camera you'll be disappointed when you get home. The views were great! However, we had to give up for the breakfast buffet as it looked like we would have to queue for about half an hour to get a photo spot (and even before 7am it was in that state). If it wasn't for the queue, it would have been 5 stars. I can't help it, though. I would like to return again!

Cloud Walk, located in Tomamu, offers a unique experience with its suspension bridge that sways gently as you walk, creating the sensation of walking on clouds. The area also features attractions like the Cloud Pool and Cloud Bar. Visitors can enjoy stunning mountain views and access ski and snowboarding slopes. In spring, it provides access to the top of the mountain for an alternative view. Despite potential crowds, the flow is well-maintained.
Best facility/ stop along the cloud sea path to admire the cloud sea and take pictures. The architecture is really aesthetical and practical for tourists. Loved it.

Excellent view and photo spot. It’s easily accessible and not too crowded. Sometimes have to wait a little to have the spot to your own. Quite unique spot for ski resorts.

Walk on the clouds. I kind of think this is a nice walk if you are not too afraid of heights. The wooden planks feels safe but there is plenty of vibration when the walk fills up. Different spots give you different photo angles. Explore for your favorite.
Mervyn P — Google review
As Cloud Nine there are more and more facilities, but this one is my favourite because of the view. The others have long queues. Here it's a one-way street and even if there are a lot of people it flows properly. You can see the sea of clouds flowing like a river in the valley below.
Google review
One of the most beautiful mountain side views I've ever seen in my life. Also leads to a number of different ski/snowboarding slopes. Cafe and lounge centre is also located here. In the spring time, you are able to access the top of the mountain to see the other side of tomamu mountain. A must see location if you're staying at the hoshino resort or just simply passing through Tomamu. Also, there are resturants and lovely little cafe/ski rental shop at the bottom of the mountain at the chair lift resort centre.

Restaurant
Nestled halfway up the Tomamu ski resort, Mount Cafe SOL is a delightful retreat for skiers and visitors alike. With its inviting cottage-like ambiance, this cafe offers a warm escape from the slopes. Guests can savor deliciously rich dishes while enjoying the cozy atmosphere enhanced by a charming wood-burning fireplace. Although vegetarian options are limited, pasta without meat is available for those seeking lighter fare. While prices may be on the higher side—typical of mountain dining—the quality of food makes it worthwhile.
As far as “resort food” goes… this was great! Cute vibe and the food was really tasty. There’s basically no vegetarian options but if you order any of the pasta without meat, you’re good to go! It was a tad bit expensive but again this review is considering this is “on mountain dining” and I’ve had far worse meals that have been more expensive. There was also a wood burning fireplace inside which was very cosy. Looking forward to visiting again in the future!

Located in a building just after gondola entrance, this cafe specialty is soft serve ice cream and some blue soda (there’s also a coffee, chowder soup and few other drinks). Ice cream is quite big in size and tastes really good. Opening hours are wrong on google maps, it’s open throughout gondolas operation time from very early in the morning.
Bartosz B — Google review
As a ski rest stop cafe it’s clean, spacious and has sufficient food variety. One can balk at the prices but hey, it’s part of the ski resort. This is operated by Hoshino resort so expect similar menu items / ingredients from the restaurants in Risonare. (There’s like roast beef in pretty much all the items... how much roast beef can one eat? Also, 800 yen tapioca milk tea...)

Buffet restaurant
Buffet Dining Hal in Tomamu, Japan offers an amazing dining experience with its instant and delicious buffet options. The beef is particularly noteworthy for its tenderness and flavor. The staff provides excellent service, promptly clearing trays to ensure a comfortable dining environment. While the prices are on the higher side, the quality of food justifies it. The breakfast menu includes both Western and Japanese options, with Hokkaido-styled ramen and thick toast being popular choices.
The breakfast buffet spread was very comprehensive and well set up. I especially liked their salmon and ikura mini-don, as well as their french toast with maple syrup and fresh cream. There is a good balance of Japanese breakfast and Western food.
Steven L — Google review
HAL offers all-you-can-eat snow crab legs, which is a real treat. The buffet items are refined and not overly abundant—great for those who struggle with too many choices. Compared to buffets in Taiwan, the price is quite reasonable, and the value is solid. Don’t miss the dreamy cotton candy among the desserts!
Tsui B — Google review
If in the end of this review and the other bad ones, you still decide to come to this restaurant… make sure you make a reservation otherwise it can be a long wait. (We made a reservation and waited for like 5 mins only) So! Food! The choices were few and the quality was low. I saw a review from over a year ago, where the theme is “salmon and crab”. So it happens, it was also this theme when we went. As you can imagine everyone flocked over to grab those crab legs, which were mediocre. As for their salmon, they were cut up in chunks and was probably pour it out of some bag. Next to that were some scallop meat too. There was also a salmon hand roll option, and that concludes our cold seafoods / sashimi section! They had this steak that tasted alright, but the texture was way off. Probably soaked in tenderisers for days. But the taste was ok! They had about 4-5 Chinese food selection, and it’s suppose to be hot foods, but it was room temperature…. Which pretty much was cool It’s really not worth the time or the money, I recommend going to the little restaurants in the resort area. Like that ramen shop was actually good. By the way! If you are going in the winter season, there is a tube that allows you to walk from the tower to the Hal. And it is “indoor” but do not be mistaken, that tube is still cold as hell. So remember to wear enough clothes when going over
Wilfred W — Google review
It’s a “Crab and Salmon” themed buffet dinner, yet the salmon is presented “rudely” in large chunks and piled up like watermelon cubes. The crab legs are not exactly fresh, and so salty that it covers up all the crab taste. Shrimps are fresh but tiny. Service from some staffs are good, some can be better. Alas! The soft serve ice cream compensates some of the disappointment.
Msooiutube — Google review
Hal is better than Nininupuri for breakfast. It’s more premium in my opinion - staff show you to an assigned seat (you need to find your own in Nininupuri), the oyako salmon don is made individually for you, pastry selection is more diverse and the French toast tastes better too! More premium selection of morning beverages than Nininupuri too. The French toast is the BEST I’ve ever eaten.
Hui L — Google review
There are 3 options for breakfast in Hoshino Resorts Tomamu the Tower This place, “Hal” is the BEST for variety of foods, taste and the view is nice Very spacious and super comfortable This place offers the lunch and dinner buffet for reservation only, except for breakfast it’s no need a reservation If you have children, and do not have breakfast voucher, only add ¥1,000 per person Extremely RECOMMENDED and it’s s a must place for breakfast
Rudi S — Google review
Buffet was expensive for what it offered; not many choices. Crab and steak station was popular but didn’t taste good at all, the steak was overcooked and crab not fresh. Can’t compare to the buffet we had at other onsen hotels/resorts. Did not have fresh fruit; cakes were poorly presented in large glass tubs instead of small cut pieces. Overall disappointing. Only thing we enjoyed was the crab miso soup.
Scarlett Z — Google review
Very high value and popular buffet breakfast place! Serve both western and Japanese style breakfast menus. The rich Hokkaido styled ramen and thick toast topped with Hokkaido fresh cream always have long lines. But we like the traditional Japanese breakfast the most: grilled salmon and mackerel, a large variety of appetizers, miso soup and plain rice! But one puzzle: why fruits seem to be of limited supply for some reason?! Nevertheless, we had breakfast here 4 times in 5 days!

I had such an amazing experience at Club Med Hokkaido Tomamu. The facilities are excellent—everything from the spacious rooms to the beautifully designed resort areas made the stay very comfortable. The restaurants are top-quality, offering a wide variety of delicious meals with fresh ingredients and decent presentation. What stood out most was the incredible hospitality. Every staff member went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, and the service was consistently wonderful throughout our stay. This was a truly memorable trip, and I would love to come back again. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a perfect balance of relaxation, adventure, and top-notch service.

The Summer program stay was wonderful, staff and events especially exceeded our expectations. The staff were very friendly, we interacted a lot without any feeling of pressure. Everyday was packed with activities and different events, my kids looked forward to the shows especially every night. Our typical day goes from 8am to 11pm. Never a boring moment. Kids felt very comfortable to attend mini club without me. Recommend.

I seldom post reviews on resorts but I feel that this needs one. My family and I took a vacation to Club Med Tomamu during the Summer of 2025. Club Med Tomamu is usually popular during Winter but we were very surprised that it is just as good during Summer time too. The rooms and facilities here are top notch, very clean and very accessible . The service staff here are one of the best I’ve ever seen. There are some of the staff which I would like to commend. The Banquet hall staff, Joy, Ivo, Sumesh, Mahen have been very good to us. They put up a very special birthday item for my son who is celebrating his birthday. The Excursion Tour staff, Kaya, Irene and Doris were very accommodating to our tour excursion requests. The outdoor staff Kaja who took me on a mountain biking tour of Hoshino Resort and Club Med . And finally, Rohit who helped us check in and makes a very nice Blue Pond Cocktail at the theatre bar. My stay here has been a very enjoyable and memorable one. I would highly recommend this resort for families who wish to come to a resort with everything contained all into one. I would definitely like to come back here again.

Beautiful getaway. Fun activities. Lovely staff. AND THE BUFFET 🤤 one of the best I’ve ever had. Chef Noel giving me tips on how to set my plate up 🤌🏾 UmeYume and John are world class performers. Fell in love with Iris from archery. Biked and witnessed Hokkaido nature first hand.. and it wasn’t even winter yet. What a time.

We stayed at Club Med Tomamu at the end of July and had an unforgettable time! This resort is a fantastic destination for families with kids. There are plenty of activities for both children and adults, making it easy for everyone to enjoy their time. The weather was perfect, a refreshing escape from the summer heat in the cities. The cool mountain air and beautiful scenery made it an ideal summer retreat. A special thank you to: - The cycling coach for one of the best cycling experiences of my life — truly unforgettable! - Albert from the Family Activities Team for creating amazing adventures that my daughter will talk about for a long time. - The Mini Club team — thank you for being so attentive and caring with every child. Your energy and dedication made the club a place where kids could truly enjoy themselves. Highly recommend Club Med Tomamu to any family looking for a fun, active, and memorable vacation!

My friends and I have enjoyed our time in Clubmed Tomamu. Good service, good food and enjoyable experience. Special mentioned of Jem the manager at Haku Restaurant who helped us to secure a reservation despite a full booking. In addition we are very happy to be served by Mahen who has remembered our drinks preferences and reserved seats for our dinning. Very impressed and delighted to be cared and pampered by him. Excellence service! Good job Mahen! We are also delighted and happy with the excellent service provided. Every staff is so friendly and dedicated to deliver the best to the customers. Zack the GM has done an excellent job to make every guests happy and entertained. He is so passionate and dedicated to his job. Well done Zack...clap clap. Will surely come again and will highly recommend my friends to Clubmed for holiday.

Bekir, Lincoln and the bar staff in particular were n absolute standout. All service, food and accommodation was great. Thoroughly enjoyed amazing excursions including bear mountain, golf at the country club, fly fishing and white water rafting. The nepalise (sorry I don't remember there names) white water rafting guys were unbelievable. My daughter has special needs and was very distressed but they had her laughing and smiling by the end. Mina-Mina Beach is a year-round indoor beach located at Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, where summer never ends with its indoor temperature kept over 30C. It features Japan's largest wave pool measuring 30m x 80m. The facility offers warm indoor pools and outdoor baths separated by gender, along with a cafe and a shop for swimming suits. Visitors can enjoy calming music while chilling in the warm environment.
On May 9, 2025, my wife and I came here to use the public bath. On May 10, 2025, my wife wanted to try the standup peddling, and I would standby in the beach pool. After a few moments of fun, she fell into the water and had problems of maneuvering. I tried to help and soon the lifeguard threw a life ring. With joint effort, my wife was lift out of the pool. It was a good learning experience about our actual capacity.

Quite a large pool. The layout is efficient. Dressing rooms and showers are placed below the entrance. Towels and lockers are provided. For 1600 Yen you can rent the floats of many forms and sizes. There is a shop at the entrance that sells swimming suits or even rent out swimming suits. You can buy goggles and waterproof handphone covers. Life vest and arm floats are available for kids. Size from a S to LL which can be used for adults There is a shallow pool at the side filled with balls for kids. 4 heated spa pools. The waves come every 30 mins. It's very strong at the start of the pull. There are baths but we couldn't enter due to cleaning. There is a cafe and a gelato stall. Staff are friendly and most are able to converse in english. There is a paddle board you can rent too and play at the deeps pools. The place could be better with slides and better decorations.

Mina Mina Beach in Shimukappu is a unique indoor beach located within Hoshino Resorts Tomamu. My family and I visited it during our trip and were amazed by how it recreates a tropical beach environment in the middle of Hokkaido, even during winter. The pool is spacious—about 30 meters wide and 80 meters long—and kept at a comfortable 30°C. Waves are generated every 30 minutes, adding a fun and realistic beach experience. It’s a family-friendly destination, with a shallow pool for kids, float rentals, and a relaxing atmosphere. There's also a connected onsen called Kirin-no-Yu, where you can unwind in an outdoor hot spring while looking out at the snowy forest. We found the facilities clean and well-maintained, and there were plenty of rental options for swimwear and floatation gear, though the rental costs can add up. The evening ambiance is especially beautiful, with soft lighting that creates a relaxing mood. Overall, Mina Mina Beach is a great spot to warm up and relax, especially after skiing or exploring the snowy outdoors. It’s one of the highlights of our visit to Tomamu.

Worthwhile visit, particularly as a unique experience during winter! Imagine swimming as though it were a summers day but surrounded by falling snow and a backdrop of mountain ski runs! The water was not at all cold and was quite perfect for a dip. There were nice sauna baths (family friendly) to soothe those aching muscles after a long day on the ski field. Easily accessible by a free shuttle bus from neighbouring tower hotel or simply walk across the road from club med

Everyone can enjoy summer in winter. Everything you need can be provided on hire. Towels, swim wear, play equipment. Waves are turned on at set intervals. Also have shallow kiddie pool and 4 hot tubs. Attached Japanese bath house. Clean and well staffed to help you with every need.

The waves is so fun! And it’s happen every half an hour! We went around 11am and played until 5pm, my kid still refuse to leave. But it’s will be better if there is slider or other play area.

Free access when you stay at Hoshino Resorts Tomamu. The pool is enormous and it makes decent waves every 30 minutes. There are also hot tubs surrounding the pool and areas to paddle board and rent flotation equipment. The locker rooms are huge and offer plentiful storage, bathrooms, showers and places to change. It was awesome to come here and relax in the hot water after snowboarding in the cold.

Public bath is not onsen but it is a bath overlooking a forest. It is quite relaxing and I think my skin feels more soft now. There is a sauna room, a room with chairs where you can sit and lay down, and the showers. Last shuttle (free shuttle rides) from the hotel is 10pm. The last bus to take you from the baths to the hotel is 11pm. We didn’t try the pool but it looked pretty spacious! After our baths there seemed to be free shaved ice service!:D

Beautiful and big facility. The place has massive heating power that it is ok to swim there and feel comfortable. However, the water and entire place is not as clean as I would expected. There is no hot spring, just a big outdoor heating pool. We stay at the club med across street, didn’t even bother to come back again for the rest of the trip.

Alot of people in the onsens. Doesn't seem like very many people respect the traditions of Japanese bathing. As loud as you expect from guests in the next door swimming pool. Even worse no staff to inform guests to keep quiet during bathing. They play videos on Japanese Onsens in the change room, but really what's the use? Other issues are the small change room, lack of pools as 1 was closed and bus timetable. Looks great in person, however not relaxing.

(Translated by Google) Visited on October 17, 2025 I received a voucher for free pool and bathing when I stayed at Tomamu, so I headed here in search of the large public bath. I was planning to use the bath in my hotel room if there was too much of a line, and since the reviews had been scathing, I went in without any expectations... The information I received in advance said the wait time would be 15 minutes at 9 PM on Friday. I showed my voucher to the staff waiting to the left after entering the building, then took the escalator and put my shoes in the shoe locker. The reception was on the right, and each person received a locker key before proceeding to the changing room. In fact, I received my key without any wait time and headed to the men's bath with a free rental towel. The bathing style of running forever is a waste of time, so it's best to avoid it. The facilities provided included shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and children's body soap. For some reason, the indoor bath only had a cold water bath, which is only a good option for sauna lovers. Many people have trouble getting into the open-air bath. It was surprisingly spacious and I was able to warm up. The drinks in the vending machines were a bit pricey. I didn't go in the pool, but it felt like a waste to come just for the bath. It didn't seem very clean, so I'm planning to take a bath in my room too...lol I went there without any expectations, but it was actually quite nice.

(Translated by Google) There's only one open-air bath here, with a lovely view, but it's very cold because of the snow! However, getting to the hot spring here is really troublesome =.= Advantages: The space is very large! First, because it had snowed, you need to wear warm clothes. You have to take off your shoes at the entrance, then get a locker key. If two same-sex friends are together, the staff will give you lockers that are just the right size, making it very inconvenient to put on and take off clothes. It practically doubled the time, because you have to keep telling your friend to make room so you can put your things away. ※The lower lockers are really difficult to use, especially when hanging clothes! Second, there's no hot water available, so you have to bring your own! Third, only the dressing area in the women's bath has chairs; the other eight seats are standing room.

The Ice Village is a winter wonderland featuring a frozen church, cafe, bar, and candy store. This seasonal attraction offers a unique experience with various ice-built facilities like churches and hotels. Visitors can explore igloos and enjoy activities such as ice slides and skating rinks. While some attractions may be closed at certain times, there are still plenty of things to see and do. Guests staying at Hoshino Tomamu can access the village for free.
We had a quick but fun visit to ice village, there was an ice slippery slide, interesting ice domes in various themes including an ice bar, ice post office and ice cafe, amongst others. Worthwhile short stopover.

We were not able to stay at the Hoshino Resort because we were too late in our search for lodging there, but we were happy to come here to play. However, the slides and ice skating were not open as it was too early in the season. (As of 12/23) They are supposed to open from the beginning of next month. There were many other things under construction, so it seems that new stores and tents will be built next year or in the near future.

A pretty unique experience for us. The whole village is make of ice in this winter wonder land. Church, bar, shops, ice skating rink… design to entertain different age group of people. But it’s really cold that we just can’t stay that long. Kids are loving it and having giggling all the time while running around there. It must be an eye opening experience for them. Winter wonderland!

If you're looking for a truly unique experience, make sure to check out the Ice Village! The igloos are amazing to explore, and the children will have a blast on the slides. While the ice skating may be closed, there's still so much to see and do here. Just be prepared for quite a bit of walking - there are quite a few steps to navigate. And don't forget to try the drinks! They're served in ice glasses, which is an experience in itself. Just make sure to bring some money along - you won't want to leave without trying one. Beside, look for the right time to go, you will experience fireworks and visit the church in the middle of the ice lake. Definitely highlights of the whole ice village. Get your boots ready and go!! There are few shuttle buses to take you from around to there.

Not much to see as half of the attraction were not open. Only tried the ice slide, it was fun and very cold. Entrance fee 600yen each. Seems to be an attraction of the resort rather than an attraction by itself. No clear sign or direction of where to enter and park your car. Park at Mizunokyokai Parking Lot 水の教会 駐車場, walk into the Tomamu Resort. Walk toward the left, before the restaurant, purchase your entrance ticket to ice village then proceed a level down the stair, walk to ice village. Its cold, do dress adequately.

One of the free admission places offered when you stay at Hoshino Tomamu. Unfortunately, not all of the attractions were open during my visit on March 1st, 2023, and I wasn't sure what the reason was for that. There are a total of 9 igloos within the ice village if I remember correctly. The first igloo was a Seicomart convenient store, the second was a dessert shop where we received free mango smoothies, and the third was an ice bar. The fourth igloo was a gift shop, and the remaining igloos were equipped with tables and chairs made from ice. While the ice village is small, it's quite beautiful. One thing to note is that the igloo dome is not built from ice, which was a bit disappointing, but it was still interesting to see. There were also some fireplaces to BBQ marshmallows, which were sold from the dessert igloo. Overall, it was a good experience, but it was quite crowded during my visit.

Breakfast restaurant
Forest Restaurant Nininupuri offers a diverse dining experience with both breakfast and dinner buffets. The restaurant boasts stunning views from its open, spacious layout with floor-to-ceiling windows. Guests can enjoy a wide variety of food selections, including poke, French toast, soft serve ice cream, BBQ meats for dinner, and Japanese-style dishes like salmon sashimi oyako don.
We had breakfast here multiple mornings. We are sitted promptly every day, sometimes short queue but not longer than 5 minutes as staff make an effort to find us a table. Food choices are great, huge selection and delicious. Food are refilled quickly so never had to worry about running out of particular food. My favorite is meat croquette and apple slices. Coffee from the machine is not bad. Good view and spacious. A bit sunny on some days due to huge windows, so bring sunglasses on bluebird days. I had breakfast in other resort restaurants, but would prefer this place because of the food quality and choices.

Altering having a bad experience in The Hal, we had to bet on this restaurant as it was the buffet spot recommended online. We know it had a kick butt view, and it was famous for its French toast and sushi rice bowl. We went SUPER early (6:10am) to make sure we get an ideal spot so my gf can take pictures to her heart’s desire. We manage to be the first to arrive, and shortly after others appeared. Alright! Food! So for their sushi bowl, it’s one of those cube cuts of random seafoods mixed into some sort of slime. Then you scoop up the slime and pour it onto your bowl of rice. Sorry, it’s not good. You get different texture as you chew, but essentially everything taste the same. So… NOT recommended French toast! It was good! Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They had this whipped cream that went very well with the French toast. I had 3-4 pieces during breakfast Everything else was mediocre. The food choices will seem like a lot at first, but turns out they double up on the same foods in different islands. So there are two sushi rice & udon island, two salad island

This restaurant was recommended by one of the staff when I asked them which was their favourite restaurant for breakfast, it did not disappoint. I have never had a breakfast buffet with such a large variety of food selection with some highlights: poke with various seafood, french toast station, soft serve ice cream. The restaurant is very open with high ceilings and floor to ceiling windows on 2 sides. Great views from anywhere in the restaurant.

On May 11, 2025, my wife and I arrived well before 08:00 to queue up for a chit#16 to wait. As all seats in the waiting area were taken, we had to stand waiting. When we got a clear up table for two at 08:10, we spotted that the many unseated tables were cleared up. For those unoccupied tables near us, no staff attended to them until 08:45. Thus, making the guests wait was totally unnecessary if the management would do its job.

Located within the Risonare Resort Tomamu, Forest Restaurant Nininupuri offers a buffet that really impressed me with both the variety and the quality, especially for the price. There’s a great selection of both Japanese and Western dishes, and everything we tried was fresh and well-prepared. A little tip: always leave room for the Hokkaido soft serve ice cream at the end — it’s a must! What really sets this place apart though are the stunning floor-to-ceiling windows that look out into the surrounding forest. It creates such a calm, peaceful atmosphere and makes the dining experience feel extra special. Highly recommend if you’re staying at Tomamu.

Good dinner buffet for a good price. We went for dinner and the price for each adult is 3900 yen. You have one hour and a half to eat your fill with all the options in the restaurant. We have seafood area (mainly shrimp, scallops, diced raw Salmon/ cooked salmon as well, octopus); meat like beef, cooked lamb cooked live and portioned Infront of you by the chefs, chicken and potatoes; carbohydrates like alot of potatoes, cheese 🧀; Fried food like chicken, french fries, hot dog; other miscallaneous dishes like pickled salmon, crab miso soup, picked fish, soba noodles etc. My favourite station being the drinks and the dessert as there's alcohol, more than 7 sodas, any drink you'd want; the dessert station include 5 different kinds of cake portioned to one bite size pieces (flavours include Tiramisu, strawberry, matcha crunch, unbaked cheesecake, brownie) and an unsweetened ice cream 🍦 area. You can make coffee as well, cappuccino (this is good), cafe latte, cafe au lait or multiple selection of tea (green tea, earl grey, English breakfast etc). The meal was delicious and filling, definitely recommend the ice cream and the beef 🍖 as it's the best in the restaurant. Their breakfast buffet I believe was 2900 yen. Would like to try it as well since their dinner buffet was delicious 😋.

Chapel on the Water, located in the Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU ski area, is a modern chapel and wedding venue known for its stunning winter illuminations and unique feature of a cross rising from the water. Designed by Tadao Ando, visitors can experience a serene walk through beech trees leading to the entrance of the chapel. The contrast between nature and contemporary architecture is striking.
On May 10, 2025, my wife brought me here. As an agnostic, I’m not interested in seeing religious premises; but I could appreciate aesthetic architecture. After the visit, I researched on the architect Taedo Ando and found his story most interesting.

One of my bucket list item and finally I was there. Amazing architecture of master Ando. If you are looking for a peaceful place and willing to cleanup your mind, no place better than here. The opening hour from 2030 to 2130 and I highly recommend to visit after 2100 to escape those tours.
L Y — Google review
Was Tadao Ando's intention really to view the inside of the chapel from the outside? People go to see the cross outside inside of the chapel. You may not realize that the inside of the chapel is so bright from the outside. Is our faith like this too? Did it give you God’s perspective? Transportation to get here is not easy. I got off at the station at night and luckily took the resort bus for free. thanks.

“You cannot simply put something new into a place. You have to absorb what you see around you, what exists on the land, and then use that knowledge along with contemporary thinking to interpret what you see." This philosophy of Tadao Ando really reflects in this project. The path along the beech tress leads in to north part of the entrance. The experience of walking to this church and seeing the ceremony space in the end provides great contrast. It’s intentional meandering walk it to prepare you a opening that is merge with nature and the views. I touched the concrete walls and seeing all the master moves that this unique architect creates. My tears almost came down! A classic piece will always touch your heart and elevate you to a spiritual place. During the ceremony time, the glass doors actually open which must be a breathtaking experience.

Chapel on the Water is a wedding chapel set within Hoshino Resorts, Tomamu. It was designed by the Japanese architect Ando Tadao, who mainly works in concrete and uses natural light in his buildings. The chapel is free to visit between 20.30 -21.30. It's stunning and well worth a visit. Easy to combine with a visit to the Unkai Terrace.
Judy O — Google review
Ambience at night is superb, so much better than that during the daytime. A very popular spot for hotel residents to visit so be prepared to arrive early. It’s at best to queue up 20 minutes prior to the opening at 8:30pm so as to get the front seats in the chapel. The sliding glass door which separates the chapel and water is open in the first 10 minutes, and then closed after the music is finished. Make sure to go early.
Raymond L — Google review
It’s kind of a shame this Tadao Ando designed piece is being used as a dedicated wedding parlor. Make sure to check out the very limited and narrow time slot open for public beforehand, normally 20:30-21:30 from Apr to Oct.
Jae L — Google review
Beautiful space designed by Tadao Ando and now used mainly for weddings. It is open to the public for viewing from 8:30 to 9:30 at night, but make sure to check the website before visiting to confirm. Also, be prepared to wait in line for photos as it was fairly crowded on a random Wednesday evening. Staff were very kind and even helped a few people with photos. I do wish it was possible to see during the daytime as well!

Ski resort
Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU ski area is a winter wonderland offering a wide range of activities and amenities for an unforgettable vacation. From skiing and snowboarding lessons to equipment rental, there's something for everyone. The resort also features a champagne bar with stunning views, making it the perfect place to unwind after a day on the slopes. In addition to winter sports, guests can enjoy snowmobile rides, snow rafting, horseback riding, and even relax in the swimming pool or onsen.
Can’t ask for more! Everything is more than perfect. Slopes are friendly for newbie, coaches are nice and speak different languages. And you won’t get bored even you don’t ski.

Had cool experience here! We came unprepared, but there was activities for noobies like us. We went for the snow cart -- perfect activity for beginners. Snow was powdery. Skiers and snow boarders were polite. Lanes were clearly marked.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, and we mostly enjoyed this stay We loved the ice village and access for kids (and kidult activities such as sledding) We’re a family with kids and there were plenty of time to do with kids. For the skier family you might need a bit more time to get organised What we liked - From the moment we arrived, the staff were warm, welcoming, and attentive to our every need. - The resort itself is beautifully designed, lots of enclosed walk ways making it easy to navigate the reaper facilities ave restaurant. - Room: Our room was spacious, comfortable, and had a stunning view of the surrounding mountains. And importantly some bay window space that you can try some laundry on - Skiing - great! fairly short runs but when there is powder this resort really transforms. - Food: good but prepare yourself for average 3500-5000 yen per person for dinner. Lunch OSS around 1500-2000 depending on what you choose. That days serving sizes are generous. - The snow- so fluffy and we were lucky to have hit a snow week so lots of powder skiing - Indoor pool- I mean heated pool in snow under cover - amazing - Childcare - really loving and caring teacher who accommodated the need for our kid to have lunch but still cost around ¥3500 per hour Didn’t like: - Food options were centralised between the towers ands risonaire so every dinner requires a walk in the walkways- which is lovely unless you have young tired kids which makes them feel longer than needed - Ski lessons- limited English slots and only my for 2 hours so you’re popping around the resort to meet pick up times - Daycare- expensive but generally available. Really kind teachers. About 3500 yen per hour as at Jan 2025 - not linked to the ski school so you have to do the pick up drop off yourself - Dinner wait times- for the cheaper options really long wait queues - esp if you have a kid asking when it’s our turn - Ski hire- limited information on the ski hire - in summary as at 2025 - for normal carve skis it’s about ¥3000 per day - really cheap but also really heavy which makes skiing on powder a lot of work. If you want higher spec skis go to the Tomamu resort centre (a 5 mins resort bus away) - where ski rental double to 6000+ per day but you’ll get proper powder skis / all mountain skis- this was not quite available on the site to read - Onsen - off site to have to take a bus to get there and though the buses run frequently it’s annoying to wear full snow gear after skiing to catch a bus - that said it is nice and quiet most of the time for this same reason - Limited on piste dining- really interesting spot in the it’s the first mountain I’ve been on where on piste dining was limited - most dining options were at the bottom of runs which make it really family friendly if you have non skier but also lines were long All in all a really great ski trip as there are mainly new skiers on the mountain so if you like the more advanced routes it’s usually quite free. Might not go back til the kids can ski independently though as the lessons time are a killer for pick up and drop off

This place was very nice, beautiful. Shuttle service is good, ski in and ski out. Only reason why I out 3 stars is you can’t get reservations to the best restaurants unless you book 30 days in advance. They have other walk in restaurants but you kinda get tired of the same food if more than 2 days. Staff is very friendly though and the hotalu village is super cool.
Genesan K — Google review
Went in January and it was very crowded. Overall experience was good and my the ice village is worth visiting. Lots of activities in the resort. The room however is due for a revamp. Pretty old amenities and interior.
Valerie L — Google review
Far less crowded than the likes of niseko. Slopes have plenty of pow, albeit having less variety. Resort area is nice and modern. Equipment rental is also really speedy, you can just charge to your room. Only downside perhaps is the lack of eating options.
Marcus S — Google review
Rental shop: 1-2 stars. The rental equipment was very poor quality, clearly used beyond the expected life. Staff seemed disinterested and annoyed - did not properly size the bindings and lacked boot and helmet sizes. They also did not offer individual goggle rentals. This was on a sleepy weekday. Slopes: 3-4 stars. We did not receive legendary Hokkaido powder, but the resort is very nicely laid out with many features and fun runs. The lifts are fast and the mountain isn’t crowded. Food: 4-5 stars. Very yummy, lots of great food options.

Cycling park
Located in the Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU ski area, GAO Outdoor Centre offers a range of exciting outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy snowmobiling, snow rafting, and other fun experiences at this environmentally friendly center. The facility provides easy access to various activities such as driving a snowmobile without the need for a driver's license. It is an ideal destination for families looking to engage in nature education programs and spend quality time surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes.
On May 10, 2025, my wife hired a Yamaha cart for an hour here. We drove around the farm area, taking snap shots of cattle and sheep. We were thrilled with the experience and the rain that began during the latter part of our cruise didn’t dampen our spirit!

Important Notice for Non-Japanese Speakers Considering Treeing If you are a foreigner considering the Treeing activity, please think twice. We paid ¥3,500 per person and unfortunately found the experience both frustrating and potentially unsafe due to a complete lack of English support. The instructor gave all safety instructions and climbing techniques only in Japanese. When we asked questions in English—especially regarding rope usage and safety—the instructor responded in Japanese with visible irritation. We were left to guess how to proceed, which felt risky, particularly when descending the tree without proper guidance. To make matters worse, children—even those who met the minimum age requirement—were loudly scolded in Japanese for minor movements. This created an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere. No assistance was provided with the equipment before or after the activity; participants were expected to manage everything on their own. It’s worth noting that today, more than half of the participants were non-Japanese speakers. Given this, it was surprising and disappointing that no English instructions or support were available. We strongly urge the resort to assign at least one English-speaking instructor per session or to clearly state that the activity is only suitable for Japanese speakers. This would ensure both safety and enjoyment for all participants. We hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future guests. ———————————————————————- Wonderful Horse Riding Experience – Highly Recommended! Horse riding was an absolute highlight of our trip. After a disappointing experience with Treeing that left our child in tears, this activity completely turned things around for us. Our guide, Kangsuki, led the horse named Garu and made the entire session so enjoyable. He spoke excellent English and brought a unique sense of humor that we were told is typical of Osaka—it kept the whole family laughing and relaxed throughout. The horses were gentle, the scenery was beautiful, and the staff was kind and professional. We can’t thank them enough for this memorable experience. Highly recommended to families and anyone looking for a fun and uplifting activity at the resort!

River Rafting & Tubing
If you're seeking unforgettable outdoor adventures in Hokkaido, look no further than Hokkaido Outdoor Adventures. This destination offers thrilling experiences like rafting, where expert guides ensure a safe and enjoyable journey for everyone, including families with young children. One standout guide, Anthony, is known for his friendly demeanor and ability to ease nervous first-timers into the excitement of the rapids. Visitors rave about the professionalism of the team and their commitment to providing a memorable experience.
Probably the best place for rafting in Japan. Coaches are super nice. Many of them are fluent in English. Professional dry suite is included for cool seasons so no worries on body temperature. The river has good balance between excitement and calm water stages. View is spectacular. Another family-oriented calm river option is available. Photos need a 3000 yen separate charge but shooting quality is totally worth it.

The perfect outdoor adventure for Hokkaido - highly recommended! Our rafting experience with HOA was organized and professional, and Anthony our guide was the best we could’ve wished for - knowledgable, friendly, and great with kids! Our younger son was nervous and scared prior to getting on the raft, but Anthony eased him into it and made the journey super fun for both adults and kids. Both kids said they wanted to go back and do it again the next day! Thank you Anthony and HOA for the lovely experience!

IKUTORA STATION, located near Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU ski area, is a unique spot that has been untouched by trains for seven years. It served as the model location for Horomai Station in the movie "Railroad Worker" Poppoya. The station building and other sets from the movie are preserved, creating a cool little spot where visitors can experience the atmosphere of the film.
It's so sad that Ikutora station will be end it's service after 1 April 2024. Hope the station building could be preserved for the memory of novice Poppiya

i visit here again since 19 years ago. This old station used as main stage of Japanese movie "Poppo-ya" starring Ken Takakura and written the original novel by Jiro Asada. To be regret the train traffic have stopped on this line from last year typhoon attack still now.

(Translated by Google) This station was featured in the movie "Poppoya" starring Ken Takakura. (Appears as the fictional "Horomai" station in the movie) A substitute bus for areas where the Nemuro Main Line is closed will also stop by, so you can take a short look from the window without having to get off the train. However, in addition to the outdoor exhibits, there are quite a few exhibits inside the station building, and above all, you can feel the local ``Poppoya love'', so if possible, we recommend getting off the train and stopping by. The Nemuro Main Line in this area is about to be abolished, and considering the number of substitute buses in operation, it will be difficult, but I think it's worth stopping by. Even after the Nemuro Main Line is abolished, you may not be able to get in front of the station building, but it seems that buses departing from and arriving at a roadside station a little further away will continue to operate, so it seems possible to stop by using public transportation.

I had been curious about this place because I had previously passed it by when I stopped by Minamifurano Roadside Station without realizing it was nearby. Although it is not yet an abandoned station, it has been seven years since trains stopped coming, and it was quite moving to think that it will soon be truly abandoned and become nothing more than a filming location. Even if you're not a movie fan, I think this is a station worth visiting once and making a lasting memory. Despite it being a weekday in the snow, there was a steady stream of tourists trickling in. The information plaza next door sells commemorative tickets and has toilets available for use. Inside the station, there is an exhibition related to Ken Takakura, who stars in Poppoya, and you can see it from around 9am. You cannot use the restroom at the station, so you will have to use the restroom at the Minamifurano Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry next door. Unfortunately, this section of the Nemuro Main Line remains closed due to typhoon damage in 2016, but you can take a substitute bus from neighboring Higashi-Shikagoe or Shintoku. Just like in the movie, it has been decided that the line will be discontinued at the end of March 2024, so it may be crowded with tourists in 2023. By the way, 2024 is 10 years since Ken Takakura's death and 25 years since the release of Poppoya. Restaurant Mikaku is a breakfast buffet spot located at Hoshino Resort Tomamu. It's a smaller venue compared to the other options, but it offers high-quality food with some unique specialties like freshly baked rolled eggs and salmon chazuke. Guests staying at The Tower will find this restaurant convenient as it provides all the essential breakfast items. Despite its limited variety, it's a good choice for those seeking a more relaxed dining experience without long queues.
This breakfast buffet restaurant is one of the there choices that provided by Hoshino Resort Tomamu I’ve been visiting this restaurant for there three morning, because it’s very near from the tower 1 lift The place is not too big like the other two The food is not to many varieties like the other two One thing that make a difference is this restaurant make a very delicious fresh egg that the other restaurant don’t have I think is enough; however, if you willing to experience better view, variety of the food and bigger places…please try “HAL” restaurant for breakfast (they also serving lunch and dinner buffet) Enjoy….

Soup Curry Garaku, located within Hoshino Tomamu, offers a delightful experience of Hokkaido-style soup curry. The menu features options like chicken, vegetable, and pork belly curry. The chicken is noted for its freshness and tenderness, while the pork belly boasts a melt-in-your-mouth softness. Despite long queues at their Sapporo location, visiting this branch provided a peaceful dining experience with available seating during off-peak hours.
Absolutely wonderful! I enjoy my spicy food and was suggested by staff i try the 4/10. It was tasty, flavoursome & had a good amount of spice. The meal was enjoyable and well worth it. Highly recommend. No credit card ability so we paid cash

At around 3:30pm on May 10, 2025, my wife and I came because we knew there was no need to queue. I tried to frequent its shop in Sapporo twice times but thought the long queuing time wasn’t acceptable as I’m not particularly fond of curry. After sitting, I just ordered a vegetable soup curry to the degree of 1/10 and heeded our daughter’s advice to have fried broccoli as a side dish. It turned out that I tasted the most delicious curry stuff I have never had in my life!

Nice curry meal to eat at a snow resort. Keeps your body warm and full. Do prepare to wait during peak periods as the place is small.
Soh — Google review
Their soup curry was really tasty! But since it’s a chain, I was surprised it’s more expensive here than in Sapporo. 😂 Maybe it’s just the countryside factor.

Tried the Hokkaido style soup curry for the first time at Soup Curry Garaku within Hoshino Tomamu and it was delicious! We ordered the chicken, vegetable, and pork belly and all three were great. The chicken was incredibly fresh and tender, while the pork belly had a melt-in-your-mouth softness that was just heavenly. Since we couldn't get a chance to try it in Sapporo due to the always long queue, we decided to have it here. We visited during an odd hour (around 4pm) and there were quite a few empty tables, which made for a peaceful and enjoyable dining experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking to try Hokkaido style soup curry.

Food is really good but the line is kinda ridiculous. Avoid peak hours which is basically anytime after 6pm for dinner. The queue at lunch looks better? The sausages are great and soup curry is amazing! Get the rice with extra cheese.

Great campsite. Beautiful scenery, quiet, public bath across the road from the campsite. The lake has a nice beach. Great place for families as there is a couple of playgrounds near by as well.

A very nice place for the city-get away or camping. Very nice view too but quite a lot of bugs in the summer

Lots of space, good garbage separation and disposal system, lots of grass and trees, clean restrooms and kitchen areas, and a lake! With lots of trails in the surrounding mountains. Lots to do and a nice view. Oh, and there's a public bath just across the road from the campground.

Permanently Closed
Campground
Niniu Camping Ground offers a spacious layout with clean Western-style toilets and relatively uncrowded free sites. The atmosphere is relaxing and quiet, making it perfect for a summer day trip. While there may be some restrictions on free sites, the overall feel is open and not too crowded. Visitors can enjoy the serene environment and even encounter deer while savoring delicious meals like deer soup.
Very spacious camp site. Beautiful surroundings, enough shade for picnic. Wall climbing and art craft available.

(Translated by Google) This is a wonderful campsite that you won't find anywhere else. It's a sacred place where you can learn all about the goodness of Shimukappu Village, so why is it closed? I can't help but feel disappointed. No matter where you look around, you'll be impressed by the indescribable grounds, the play equipment that makes use of nature, the toilets that are well maintained every time you use them, and the messages written on the last day. I could feel the love from the manager in everything. Tomamu is not the only good thing about Shimukappu Village. Tourist spots alone will not revitalize a village. Finally, with the people who support the local community, I am a person who visits there many times. I understand the profit and loss, but Memories of many smiles born here, Please, Mayor-san, please don't forget. Many people are looking forward to reopening. thank you.

(Translated by Google) It was my first time using it, and it was a really nice campsite. The toilets and kitchen are clean, and above all, the nature is truly amazing! The starry sky was so beautiful. This place is scheduled to close this year, but I can't believe it's closing! ! Or rather, it's a waste... The manager was very kind and personable. I wish the managers of other campgrounds would also receive training here... I want to go next year and the year after. I want to say to the management, ``I'm here again♪'' This is such a campsite. I want you to reconsider...

(Translated by Google) I think the site has a wide feel and you can have relatively free layout. The toilets were Western-style with flushing and were very clean. Free sites are also restricted and I don't think it's crowded, but there are many children gathering on sites like Slugline. You can throw away the charcoal and ash, but it may be a bit of a hassle to take the trash home and wash your gear. It's a gravel road that everyone has commented on, but it was longer than I expected. However, since the check-in and check-out times are completely different, it is not often that they pass each other. (Although it is not 0) It would be a waste to close this facility this year, so I would like them to reconsider.

(Translated by Google) All the staff were very nice. He was kind, friendly, and had a great smile. The kitchen is also kept well-cleaned, and I think the restrooms are clean enough as well. The toilet had a slight animal odor, but it wasn't enough to make me hesitate to use it. By far the best thing about the campgrounds I've visited in Hokkaido is that there are fewer crows. At most campgrounds I was woken up early in the morning by the sound of crows, but that didn't happen here. However, there are many carpenter bees, so be careful with fragrances. The nearest hot spring is about 30 minutes by car. It wasn't new, but it was clean and it felt good. The sound of driving on the highway at night becomes a concern once you notice it late at night. What I was more concerned about was the manners of the other campers. I think many people who are used to camping will understand that lights out at 10pm means quiet time after that. During our consecutive stay, I woke up around 12:30 a.m., when most of the guests were probably asleep, to the sound of the BBQ stove or bonfire being washed in the kitchen. The sound of washing stainless steel products is quite loud, so the person was inconsiderate. The next day, a group of college students made a fuss until 3am. Some groups started cleaning up as early as 4 a.m., resulting in the most sleep-deprived camping experience ever. Next time, I would like to visit at a time when young groups are less likely to gather. We recommend bringing earplugs if you go during these times. The starry sky was very beautiful at night, and since it was the timing of a meteor shower, we saw many shooting stars. The firewood I purchased here was dry and easy to use.
