The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, is a world-renowned paleontology museum known for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils and reconstructions. With over 40 complete dinosaur skeletons on display, visitors can gain a sense of the immense size of these prehistoric creatures.
Extremely popular museum—you can see license plates from all over Japan. If you like dinosaurs, this place is a must-visit. The kids were very excited to explore and learn. There’s plenty of interesting stuff to see. The buildings themselves are also worth seeing. The architecture looks like a spaceship landing on a small hill in the middle of rice fields. The infrastructure is well-prepared to handle large crowds: clean toilets, a brand-new restaurant, and a wide selection of merchandise. There’s plenty of free parking, so driving here is a great option.

Extremely well organized place. Beautiful arhitecture too. Child or adults everyone can enjoy this place. Better if you buy your ticket in advance. A lot of interesting things to see and fun activities to do. The gift shop is amazing too.

I can't believe it's only $10 to enter! This museum was so much fun and the dinosaurs were so cool! You don't need kids to have fun here. We drove from Fukui and there's a huge parking lot. We bought tickets in advance for timed entry and enjoyed a really good lunch (it was adorable!!)
Siobhan E — Google review
Great museum. Huge area with lots of displays and activities for the kids. The main gallery is an echo chamber which is awesome! Great food in the restaurant and cool playground outside too. Well recommended for kids, families, archaeology enthusiasts and dinosaur buffs! Big carpark, also lots of bus options
Jimmy M — Google review
Great museum. Impressive replicas mix with real fossils. Animaltronix looked nice too. The video works are a bit clumsy though. I really appreciate the faithful English translations on most of their displays. Though there was no translations available for the special exhibition. Also the special exhibition was surprisingly small, I'd suggest skipping it if you can't understand Japanese. The dioramas where the exhibition highlights the changes in the environment through the millions of years with the dinosaurs in them were informative. I went in hoping to gain some new knowledge and I left feeling fulfilled. The gift shop needs to have some imagination regarding the products they offered as I feel they were a bit lackluster.

One of the most amazing Museum's I have ever been to. So many different different specimens of dinosaurs on display, even some information in English which makes it easier for tourists to understand. The the museum offers multiple levels and even an exclusive look on how some fossils are prepared. The restaurant offers a good selection of delicious dishes and the souvenir shop a wide variety of different things to buy. Would definitely visit again in the future.

An outstanding paleontological museum. The trip to the museum takes a long time, but it's worth it. It's best to buy tickets to the museum and the excavation site in advance, as it's very crowded. The bus from the station to the museum costs 300 yen. The museum has a restaurant, playgrounds, a dinosaur park, and a gift shop.

Without a doubt a world best dinosaur museum. Excellent range and depth, great animating techniques and great science detail. Real fossil excavation. Easy access from Fukui shinkansen ration. Tip top.

Park
Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest Nagaoyama Park is a natural park in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, featuring dinosaur-related facilities like the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum and Katsuyama Dino Park. Visitors can enjoy observation tours to discover woodland plants and animals, as well as a barbecue garden. The park offers guided tours, fossil excavation experiences both within the park and outside by bus (requiring reservations), and children's activities.
The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (FPDM) is one of the world’s top three dinosaur museums, located in Katsuyama, Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Opened in 2000, the museum is renowned for its extensive collection of dinosaur fossils and exhibits. The museum’s main exhibition hall spans 4,500 square meters and is divided into three main zones: Dinosaur World, Earth Sciences, and History of Life. Visitors can marvel at over 40 dinosaur skeletons, including full-scale replicas and real fossils, as well as life-sized animatronic dinosaurs that bring these ancient creatures to life. In addition to its impressive indoor exhibits, the museum also offers a unique outdoor experience at the Field Station, where visitors can participate in fossil excavation activities. This hands-on experience allows guests to discover and learn about the process of paleontological research. The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is not only a center for public education and enjoyment but also a hub for scientific research, contributing significantly to the field of paleontology.

I -love- this park and museum! All of the signs are in both English and Japanese, so I really felt like I was learning something. Every other museum I've been to, including the National Gallery in Ueno, Tokyo, was only in Japanese-- it's not their fault, but going through those museums really felt like a waste of time. Not here! The architecture is really unique, and the range of specimens is top-notch. Seeing the fossil prep room was a unique, cool experience. Two warnings for visitors: the restaurant is over-priced and underwhelming; best avoid it, really. Also, the museum is slowly undergoing renovation, which is to be finished in 2023. It wasn't too bad when I went, in April 2021, but your experience may be different because of this construction.

Katsuyama Dino Park is a thrilling destination for dinosaur enthusiasts and families alike, nestled within the expansive Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest Park. This walk-through attraction features an impressive collection of 44 life-size dinosaur models hidden among lush greenery along a scenic 460-meter walking path. Visitors can explore themed zones like the Valley of Attacks and King of the Sky, making it an engaging experience for all ages.
Very well maintained and set up prehistoric museum. Home of the Fukui Raptor. Roughly 10-15 by bus from Katsuyama station, after a 1 hour train ride from Fukui. Staff is helpful and friendly.

Quite a nice hike about a mile long; it would be a nice bonus package if you have kids. There’s a parking lot next to the park if you want to skip the museum, but it wasn’t a bad walk from the museum parking lot. The exhibits here are for the most part robotic. Motion sensors line the trail to trigger the dinosaur animations when visitors get close. It’s a treat for the kids for sure.

We came to visit on a public holiday. I recommend booking your ticket online. 🎟 because this place is so popular and busy. Come early to avoid the long line of traffic trying to enter the carpark. 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 Great facilities and a lot of fun for the kids. Some of the moving dinosaurs 🦕 may be scary for little kids. The restaurant food was good, but it took a long time to get a table. 🍜 Despite all the negatives I mentioned above, we still had a great time. 👍

At the 福井県立恐竜博物館 レストラン, dining becomes an adventure in itself! This unique restaurant offers a delightful twist on typical museum fare, serving up delicious local specialties with a playful dinosaur theme. Imagine savoring a special Fukui sauce katsudon served in a bun shaped like a dinosaur footprint or indulging in parfaits adorned with dinosaur cookies and creatively cut fruit resembling claws.
Surprisingly excellent food. Most museum cafes I have been to overcharge for generic food. Not only was this food delicious, but they served local specialties, and made an effort to create a dinosaur aesthetic with the presentation. The special fukui sauce katsudon- pork burger had a dinosaur footprint bun. The parfaits not only had dinosaur cookies, fresh fruit, but the skins of the fruit had been partially peeled and cut to look like claws! I also ordered the zaru-soba (soba is also a regional delicacy along with the sauce katsudon pork cutlets) and it was very good. On top of that, the prices were so reasonable. The set menu with burger, fries and dino nuggets was about 1,000 yen (with a drink), the soba was around 700 yen, and the parfaits were also about the same. Beating the crowds: It's a lot about the timing, as other reviews have said. We went shortly after the afternoon opening (COVID precautions), when most people were focused on seeing the museum. We did the restaurant first and then museum so it was practically empty. But I have been here when its very crowded as well, and the experience was still good (try to sit on the counter seats facing the window for more privacy).

I had a meal at the museum café. My set meal was okay, but if you’re visiting, I recommend going for the burger set—it looked much better than what I ordered!

For foodcourt food this was honestly decent - and fun! My 10year old loved doing the science experiment cake. It was also cool to dine surrounded by fossils.

The restaurant has been renewed and now has a vegan option: vegetable curry. The food was a bit expensive but tasty. Would be better to come before 11 as there may be a long queue at the peak time.

(Translated by Google) Reservations are required, so if you visit during a particularly busy time, you can save time by making a reservation first. The concept is dinosaurs, and it's fun to see dinosaur motifs throughout. I had the Carnivorous Tyranno Burger for 1,500 yen, but since these kinds of places are meant to be enjoyed for the atmosphere and concept, I thought the taste and contents were about what you'd expect. However, the burger was a bit too small... I would have liked it to be a little more substantial, even if it meant paying more.

(Translated by Google) This is a large restaurant at the back of the museum shop. It gets very busy, but if you wait your turn they will contact you via social media, so the wait isn't too bad. You order and pay using a terminal similar to the ticket machines you see often these days, and when your number on the paper that comes out is called, you go and collect your food. The menu is quite unique, in keeping with the dinosaur museum style, and the kids enjoyed their meals, but although the food was delicious, I felt the portions were a little lacking for adults. If you go a little later they also have pancakes and other sweets available, so it's a good place for tea.

(Translated by Google) I went on a weekday before the summer Obon festival, and it was crowded. You reserve a ticket in advance, get a number, wait a few minutes, and then receive a phone or SMS notification to enter the restaurant. It's nice not to have to waste time waiting. However, the wait time on my day exceeded 100 minutes by noon, so it's best to make a reservation early. There are few restaurants in the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum area, so it's a good idea to plan your visit accordingly. The restaurant is very clean, with replica dinosaur specimens on display. I was able to sit down immediately after receiving my reservation notification. Ordering is done at one of three ticket machines. Cash and various electronic payment methods are accepted. After placing your order, your number is called and you collect it at the counter. I ordered the Carnivorous Tyranno Burger with a drink set. It's a small cheeseburger, but the meat is juicy and more filling than it looks. It comes with fries and lettuce, which was also delicious. Considering its location inside the museum, the taste is more than satisfactory. I was satisfied with the food. The price was a little high for the amount of food, but it's a tourist spot so I guess that can't be helped.

Nestled in a serene forest, Daihonzan Eiheiji is a remarkable Zen Buddhist temple complex that dates back to the 13th century. Founded by the revered Zen master Dogen Zenji in 1244, this sacred site embodies tranquility and spiritual depth. Known as the 'Temple of Eternal Peace,' Eiheiji serves as one of the two main temples of Soto Zen Buddhism in Japan. Visitors will find themselves immersed in an atmosphere where wellness and mindfulness are paramount.
The most beautiful temple we visited on our trip. It has such a calm and peaceful feeling. There’s so much to see, and you can also just sit and enjoy the quiet surroundings. We went at the end of March and there was still snow, which made it even more special. Loved it and would definitely recommend visiting.

A truly beautiful Buddhist temple, I’m so grateful I could come and be blessed with the incredible views of the nature and temple buildings. I really appreciated the Dharma teachings hung up in the corridor near the main entrance as these lessons mean a lot to me and it was so nice being in an environment with great energy as people who practice the same lessons can come together and cultivate the peaceful atmosphere. It was truly a joy for me to walk through the temple and gaze upon all the sights, plus read about the history and meaning behind certain halls on their wooden information tablets.

Definetely a must see place in Japan. Not only it is one of the important #temples in Japan and accomodates Zen monks trainings and practices which visitors can join some of the activities also the surrounding with beautiful tall cedar trees. Amazing view especially during winter when it is snowing. The temple has many buildings connected by covered walkways, it makes it very convenient to experience in #Fukui.

What a place! Although it’s about 30 min away from the Fukui station, this temple is totally worth visiting. The size and the architectural beauty of the temple was simply amazing. Surrounded by magnificent mountain-scape and calm greenery, I almost felt sorry that this place wasn’t well known to foreign tourists (although I was happy with that when I visited there). Highly recommend!!

What a magnificent place. If you are a Zen practitioner and in Japan, this should absolutely be on your itinerary. We went to a number of temples while in Japan but the energy you feel at Eiheiji is unmatched. Magnificent trees, building and practice. We spent two days visiting and participating in the morning service and zazen and would have spent a third to do more hiking around the temple. Also what's really nice is because it's out of the typical tourist circuit there are a lot less visitors than any other place we went (we were there on a weekday so don't know about the weekends).

Eiheiji Temple One-Day Monk Experience – A Peaceful and Enlightening Retreat It took me about 3.5 hours to travel from Tokyo to Fukui, but the journey was absolutely worth it. Eiheiji Temple offers a deeply peaceful and reflective atmosphere, unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. The highlight for me was learning zazen (seated meditation) the proper way. The program had English-speaking guides who were incredibly kind and respectful to us international participants. There were only six of us from abroad, while the rest were Japanese students (around 10–15). They followed a different schedule from us, and honestly, I wish I spoke Japanese to engage more deeply with the experience. We were asked to wake up at 3:50 AM, and interestingly, there was no shower the next day—which I personally found a bit uncomfortable. If given a choice, I’d rather wake at 3:30 AM just to have a quick shower and feel refreshed before starting the day. During the zazen session, the core message was clear: enlightenment comes from within, and practice should be part of daily life. I’ve done meditation before, but Soto Zen teaches you to meditate with your eyes open, which is surprisingly challenging. Even in a quiet space, thoughts and emotions constantly bubble up—nothing too serious, just random things. It feels like you’re quietly observing your own soul. And yes, sitting for 30 minutes will definitely make your legs go numb! They also taught us about mindful eating. There was a beautiful chanting ceremony before meals to express gratitude, which I found really touching. They even gave us souvenir chopsticks and a small booklet so we can continue the practice at home. One of the most powerful moments was the early morning prayer ceremony. All the monks gathered and chanted in unison—it felt sacred, healing, and almost magical. Overall, I learned so much from this one-day monk experience. It wasn’t just about meditation or rituals—it was about slowing down, being present, and finding meaning in small, everyday actions. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a meaningful escape from the busy modern world. The one-day monk experience costs ¥15,000 and must be applied for at least a month in advance. Your application also needs to be approved by the temple. I stayed in the women’s tatami room, and it was surprisingly comfortable and beautiful—it honestly felt a bit luxurious. The soft green and yellow tones were calming and well-coordinated, adding to the serene vibe. What really surprised me was the bath setup—it’s similar to a traditional public bath, where everyone bathes nude. There’s even a large shared hot tub in the center where you can soak and relax. It was an unexpected but authentic part of the experience!

This place is breathtaking and if you can you should definitely stop here for a visit. We arrived by car and parked in one of the first parking lots we found in the village, it was 300 yen for the day and overall was one of the cheapest. From there we walked 10 mins uphill to reach the area where the temple is located. The first impression is majestic with secular trees surrounding the buildings. Once you enter and pay the fee (700 yen per person) you will take off your shoes in the provided bags and will be guided by colorful lines on the wooden floor. Just walking around the area in silence gives you a sense of zen. This place is solemn and you can see monks walking around and taking care of the gardens. There are videos along the way together with informational signs (all translated to English) that provide interesting insights on the history of the temple and how it is used today by the monks living there. This is definitely in the top 5 of the places I visited in Japan.

In November 2024, we made a brief stop at this station to catch a bus to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. While waiting for the bus, I considered exploring around the station, but it was quite cold that day, so I decided to stay inside. The staff was kind and helpful, even though our Japanese skills were limited. The bus to the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum stops right in front of the station and is easy to identify by the dinosaur images on it. Payment is only by cash. Naturally, your behavior will improve as well. I had my meal on the first floor, but when I heard that I could also tour the second floor of the historic building, I climbed the steep stairs and was surprised to find a wonderful hall. In particular, the seafood bowl had a lot of toppings and was very filling, but I thought it was amazing for the price. It was my first time trying soba and grated soba, and it was amazing! ! I was very satisfied with this delicious old-fashioned restaurant. Other reviews have written about customer service and serving times, so I would like to share this in my review as well. The store seems to be run by a small number of employees, and there was a sign to that effect! ! If you don't have enough time, the restaurant recommends that you go to another restaurant, and the hours of service are normal considering that it is a privately run restaurant with a small number of employees. I felt that it fell into the category of I also thought that what was said elsewhere was not something to be concerned about. I think consideration on the part of the customer is also necessary. I was very satisfied with the delicious meal! !

The service was very fast, which surprised me because I usually imagine sauce katsudons to be brought slowly. The sauce katsu had an addictive sour taste and was very delicious 😋 (Original)

(Translated by Google) It was close by after the dinosaur museum so I ordered a seafood bowl and soba set. They were a little unfriendly... The couple who happened to be there at the same time didn't even notice me calling them, so I just laughed bitterly. The atmosphere was awkward from start to finish... The seafood bowl was pretty tasty.

(Translated by Google) Let me start by saying this! This is a place where visitors from outside Fukui Prefecture who missed out on the food at the Dinosaur Museum can go and find something nearby! Even if Fukui residents go, the satisfaction level will be low (lol). As mentioned in other reviews, if you're looking for great customer service, I recommend not going! However, if you're just going to fill your stomach, it's probably fine, right?

Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Zen-ya offers a delightful experience with its serene ambiance and delectable Japanese cuisine. Guests are treated with exceptional hospitality, as the owner personally explains each dish on the menu, making it accessible even for those unfamiliar with Japanese cuisine. The restaurant is known for its delicious food, and visitors often receive complimentary specialties from the owner. While Zen-ya exclusively serves Japanese dishes, it comes highly recommended for a top-notch dining experience.
Food was superb. Good variety of options! The chicken karage, sashimi and mackerel were delicious!

Absolutely amazing. We have been in Japan for a week and this is by far the BEST meal we have had. Amazing service and attention to detail. The staff was attentive and so kind. We sat at the bar counter and watched the chefs cook. We had the best time.

We had the best of experiences combining relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. They excelled in the way we were treated. We got the menu explained to us dish by dish as our Japanese is basic. The owner also treated us with several specialities on the house.

Sat at counter and had one of the most memorable meals of my life. Chef was so nice - food was *incredible*!! Waygu steak was the best steak of my life. Wife had the ramen which she loved. Don’t miss this place - it was a highlight of our two week trip to Japan!

(Translated by Google) I came to Katsuyama City with my mother. Katsuyama City is bustling with activity as Ryusenji Hakusan Shrine is open to the public once every 33 years. The Dinosaur Museum is also collaborating with Pokémon, and it seems to be visited by many children. We visited Hakusan Shrine. We made a reservation at a restaurant with good Google ratings within walking distance of the hotel. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful, more like a small restaurant than an izakaya. For drinks, we had draft beer, bottled beer, and two cups of sake, a local Fukui sake. ◼️Luxurious assortment of sashimi ◼️Grilled eggplant, bacon and tomato salad ◼️Fried Fukui shrimp ◼️Seafood sticky bomb ◼️Mentaiko cheese binbin grilled ◼️Clam broth ramen ◼️Fukui plum rice ball ◼️Zenzai with salted ice cream The assortment of sashimi is fresh and luxuriously presented♪ There were several types of salad, but the waiter recommended the most popular one. It was voluminous and delicious♪ We could see the seared Satsuma red chicken being grilled! We had it with yuzu pepper and lots of green onions! This also goes well with sake♪ The seafood sticky bomb was a mix of lots of seafood and natto, served with seaweed and mustard♪ A new Fukui specialty? Binbinyaki seems to have yam and mochi in it! When I asked if the takoyaki flavor was mentaiko cheese, I was told that mentaiko cheese is often used. It's a delicious, melt-in-yaki dish♪ I was surprised by the clam broth ramen♪ They brought out a lot of clams that were used in the broth! A mountain of clams♪ The ramen soup has a lot of clam extract in it, and it warms your body♪ I ordered the onigiri because my mother wanted to eat it lol Ramen and onigiri! I ate way too much. I wasn't planning on having dessert, but my mother said she couldn't finish without dessert, so I asked for the bill, but we added more lol I was surprised that even the dessert was delicious♪ The salty ice cream and zenzai pattern matched perfectly♪ I was surprised that the bill was more reasonable than I expected, considering how much I drank and ate! I plan to visit Fukui once a year, so I'd definitely like to visit this restaurant again♪ The food, presentation, drinks, and customer service were all great! Thank you for the meal♪ (Original)
