Melilla in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Melilla, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Melilla offers a striking mix of Spanish and North African cultures, visible in its cuisine, traditions and everyday street life. The fortified old town, Melilla la Vieja, overlooks the Mediterranean with centuries‑old walls, tunnels and sea views. The city is also known for its rich collection of early 20th‑century Modernist architecture, second in Spain only to Barcelona. Beaches, waterfront promenades and a compact city center make it easy to explore on foot.
With favorites like Sinagoga de Or Zaruah o Yamín Benarroch, Museo Egipcio de Melilla ( M.E.M ), and Cala de Trápana, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like La Vinoteca de Joaquín Aznar and Kursaal Lounge café bar restaurante so you can get the best taste of Melilla while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Store
Melilla Park Mall is a well-designed shopping center with a variety of shops offering good quality products at reasonable prices. It's known for its fresh fruit and vegetables at market prices, as well as other shops including clothing stores and foam for furniture cushions. Visitors can enjoy refreshments like milkshakes and smoothies while exploring the mall, which also houses popular brand name shops. Overall, it's considered one of the must-visit places in Melilla due to its cool atmosphere and diverse shopping options.
I love this park even though it was way better before the covid ! However , I think it's getting its spirit back !

It is a European city inside Africa. This is unreasonable. Does this African country not have an army?

Lovely to have a shopping complex the city needed it and the supermarket is excellent however there isn't any coffee shops or restaurants only a very small burger king which wont cope with the amount of visitors. Are there plans for coffee shops and more eating places? Lots of cracked tiles on the floor already!

Lovely beach with nice view of the Mediterranean and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s a Good place for a relaxing walk, and the sunsets here are stunning. While it’s not the largest beach, it’s well-maintained, and the water is usually calm, making it good for a quick dip. Could be a nice bit of beach in Melilla if they replaced the tired football equipment and broken netting. Also the beach wall is awful! Chipping yellow paint and it never gets repaired just painted over every spring time. Please sort out the wall!! The showers are old and the whole beach area looks dirty and rundown. The Marina is very nice with lovely views of the Gourougou mountains. The bars are not good. Very run down and old fashioned with sometimes extremely loud thumping music. The bars and restaurants need refurbishment and it could do with some good chain restaurants like Tagliatelle to make it more modern. It has very poor air conditioning, in winter you are very cold and in summer you are very hot. The good thing is that the plays are very cheap compared to other theaters.

Beach
Playa de Horcas Coloradas is a spacious coastal area located slightly away from the main city center. It boasts a broad shoreline with smooth sand and shallow seas. Visitors can find amenities such as restroom facilities and the option to rent umbrellas for shade. This beach has gained recognition as one of the top choices in Melilla due to its apparent cleanliness, despite the prevalent issue of plastic pollution in this region.

Great place to have a shower after a night in the ferry. The beach itself isn't clean unfortunately... And the worst is that the guys supposed to clean the beach actually contribute in dirtying it... There was a shift of two Moroccan ladies who were working to clean the area followed by two guys who seemed to be there just to enjoy the view. One of the guys (older with an earring) this morning 8h30 of 20th September 2024 was smoking his cigarette and used the feet-washing facilities to turn it off and then threw it on the floor of the beach shower... Picture published... So no wonder this beach is dirty...

A beautiful setting but the amount of litter is disgusting and it didn't feel safe walking barefoot on the sand and stones.

If you find yourself in Melilla, make sure to stop by La Vinoteca de Joaquín Aznar, a true culinary treasure. This charming spot offers an impressive array of meticulously crafted dishes that are both unique and delicious. The menu may be concise, but each selection is thoughtfully curated to ensure a delightful dining experience. Meat lovers will be particularly pleased with the high-quality options available; the steak tartare and octopus leg come highly recommended!
We were in Melilla for 10 days, docked at Port Noray. We went to La Vinoteca twice. Even though it was not busy the service was excellent and food exceptional. The friendliness. The space was very clean. Joaquin is very nice and informative about the food and also about Melilla. It's worth going there definitely.

Nice decoration, modern and quiet - although situated in a very noisy area, with loud music from the nearby places. We made a booking for 9, but when we got there they told us kitchen only opens at 9:30 (but at least allowed us to sit down an order a drink). As a vinoteca, they had lots of great wines, including by glass in the menu - alas not so many actually available (3 of the ones we asked for they didn't have!). Also suprised by the lack of wine knowledge from the waiter, we expected more from a wine place. Food was also sort of dissapointing - the cheese platter was not very varied (only sheep aged cheese with different flavours); the tomahawk came rare instead of medium rare and we had to give it back to cook it further. A pity, felt like the place has potential but it continually missed the point.
Irina C — Google review
Hate to give a bad review, but after reading reviews we really wanted to try it. So after walking about half an hour to get there, we discovered it was closed. Even though their website and google maps both posted an opening time of 9pm the day we went. We had a drink next door while we waited in case they opened later, but they never did. Please post your proper hours for the those of us that may be visiting and don't know. It's very frustrating. There was also no notice on the door regarding a change of hours.

We went to Kursall for dinner. At first they were very kind. Going on there were a lot of mistakes with the orders, and the food was frozen.. frozen pizza, disgusting pasta with pre-made sauce … my friend didn’t even finish his bolognese .. When we left, we decided to divide the bill. The waiter made us all pay and scammed us by telling us we were missing a part of the bill. Which we paid thinking some may have left without paying. He then asks for more money. Then, counting the tickets we realized that we had payed over 100€ too much. He refused to pay it back… We’re very unhappy as to how it went. Definitely won’t come back and hope this place closes.

I am in love with museums and Egypt and I have been incredibly surprised by the original pieces, how it is displayed, the decoration of the rooms... it is done with care, in the same way that Soufiane shows that she loves what she does and transmits it. , he is not a guide who has learned a script and that's it... the detail of the names on paper as a gift... everything!! I would return just to enjoy it a little more, because I needed half an hour more to be able to see everything in detail and read, since the visits are during closed hours and there was not enough time for everything. Nice place in Melilla for Moroccan style food. We came early and were lucky to get a table, since almost all tables had been reserved (Saturday). Staff is very attentive and friendly. The soft lamb couscous was tasty and we loved pastelito de pollo and the juicy pinchitos. The pastelito de mariscos had quite a bit of vermicelli and vegetable filling, some fish and didn't really taste any shellfish.

Spectacular beach located right under the fortress - you need to access through a historical gate from the street and then walk through a walled corridor. Easily the coolest beach in Melilla. The place to go after exploring the magnificent fortress itself.

Bar Los Polillas - Hermanos Felices is a charming spot nestled within the historic defensive walls of Melilla, making it an essential stop while exploring the old town. This restaurant is right next to the port and Melilla Vieja, and is very cool. Great outdoor seating, but there were many flies while I was trying to eat. I was ready to rate it 5 stars and even go here again before we leave Melilla, but we were overcharged on the bill. We ordered a four cheese pizza, the vegan beyond meat burger, and two beers. The bill was as expected and we paid by card, but then a few minutes later, we got the notification that we were overcharged by €6. We were already back in our home in Melilla and couldn't do anything about it anymore. Though they could have had our business multiple times, I'm sad we'll choose another place next time because of this error. Sad, because they have quite some vegan or vegetarian dishes for the city

We enjoyed the food and the good service, but in the end they charged €31 from my card, even though the bill was €25.70. We were planning to go there again, but will obviously not do it now. Make sure to take the bill and ask for the card receipt.

I’ve ate better pizzas than here, and I’m sure you can find better pizzas in Melilla, the service is basic, I’ve waited 10min before getting the menu, and maybe another 10min to get the food. I was hungry so the pizza was ok, but it didn’t tasted much … for a beer and a pizza I paid 15€ it’s okay, but even the pizza that I buy in Lidl is better in my opinion. The pizza was good looking, but a bit more Chorizo would have been much appreciated. I don’t think I will get back to that restaurant. I suggest that restaurant for someone who is starving and that is ready to eat anything.

Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Faro de Melilla la Vieja. Not quite as popular as Melilla la Vieja, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Melilla la Vieja

4.7
(1162)
Historical landmark
Melilla la Vieja, also known as "El Pueblo," is a 16th-17th century fort with four walled enclosures and multiple museums showcasing relics. The city walls were initially built on rock in the 15th century, bearing the marks of different cultures over time. This monumental complex offers charming neighborhoods, panoramic views, watchtowers, and beautiful buildings like the Baluarte de la Concepcion and the Hospital del Rey.
Beautiful place full of rich history and charm. The blend of Spanish and Moorish influences in the architecture makes every corner feel like a step back in time. Walking through its quiet streets, you can’t help but appreciate the well-preserved fortress walls and stunning views of the Mediterranean. The serene atmosphere is perfect for those looking to escape the bustle of the city and immerse themselves in culture. Whether you’re a history buff, a photographer, or just someone who loves a peaceful stroll, Melilla Vieja is a must-visit!

There is so much packed into this area! There were so many great museums scattered throughout, great views of the sea, a few great restaurants, cats, alleyways, and so much history. Please note that to see the Cuevas deal Conventico (the archway from the sea into the land) you need to schedule a guide.

I didn’t expect too much but I left speechless. This place is incredible. It’s huge, there’s so many alleys and different places it’s like a maze, everything’s beautifully restored with plazas and gates and drawbridges and accesible watch towers. At one of the squares there’s a museum and some rooms to look into. You have to visit if you’re in the city!

Cuevas del Conventico

4.7
(114)
Historical landmark
Cuevas del Conventico, located between El Convento and the Conventico, are a complex network of caves with three floors. Originally dug by Phoenicians, these caves were later used by soldiers for shelter and daily activities during wars. Over the years, they played a crucial role in Melilla's defenses against Moorish armies. The caves were beautifully restored between 1993 and 2000.
A must visit! A Spanish speaking guide gives you the history of the place. The tour is complimentary. Unfortunately i didn’t speak Spanish. After the cave visit our guide had keys to unlock the door that takes you down by the water. A stunning view on a beautiful sunny day. A pleasant walk down to the beach.

(Translated by Google) The Conventico Caves are, without a doubt, a fascinating corner of Melilla: a labyrinth of historical tunnels with centuries of military history and captivating legends. However, our visit was marked by frustrating contrasts that prevented us from fully enjoying it. The good: - The caves themselves are impressive, with passageways and views of the sea. - The coastal location adds a unique charm, especially because of the famous arch and shell beach. What could be improved: - Restricted access: Although we understand that bad weather can be a risk factor, not being able to go down to the beach (the only point to appreciate the arch in all its magnitude) left the visit lame. We only had the option of seeing the arch from the Military Museum, which was already closed when we left the caves visit. - Organization problems: The visiting hours published on the official website did not coincide with the real ones. In addition, it is not possible to reserve online, something essential in 2025. - Attitude of the staff: The hostesses showed a cocky and unempathetic tone regarding the impossibility of going down to the beach. In a tourist site, courtesy should be a priority. - Unused technology: Several screens and projectors were turned off or damaged, which reduced the depth of the historical explanation.

(Translated by Google) The cavities that make up the Conventico Caves were formed naturally in the sandstone cliffs by marine erosion. Due to their strategic location by the sea, they have been used as coastal refuges since ancient times by various civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs, primarily as shelter for ships and sailors. No architectural structures from this period have been documented within the complex. With the consolidation of Spanish rule over Melilla in the Modern Age, the caves began to serve logistical and defensive functions. During the Siege of Melilla in 1774-1775, they were converted into warehouses, shelters for the civilian population and clergy, and spaces for religious services. During this period, expansions and internal divisions were made, allowing for more intensive use of the underground space. In 1925, the construction of the port of Melilla transformed the cove where the caves were originally located, filling it with sand to create the current Trápana beach, which modified its access from the sea. Between 1993 and 2000, a structural rehabilitation project was carried out on the complex. The works included the consolidation of vaults with crossed arches, the construction of new brick vaults on the lower level, the plastering of walls, and the paving of streets above the caves, such as Miguel Acosta and Concepción, to prevent subsidence.

Faro de Melilla la Vieja, also known as Melilla's lighthouse, is a historic and cultural monument that was built in 1918. It is one of only four Spanish lighthouses located on the coast of Africa. The lighthouse is housed in a square building and also serves as the home of Fundacion Melilla Ciudad Monumental, which is responsible for the restoration of Melilla's historic buildings.
Located near the old town, the lighthouse is a nice spot to visit. Make sure you go inside and climb the short spiral staircase to the roof top for spectacular views especially on a sunny day.

The Museo Militar, also known as the Museo Historico Militar, has been open to the public since 1997 and is located near the Iglesia de la Concepcion. It offers a fascinating collection of over 500 artifacts that showcase the rich military history of Melilla. The exhibits include weapons, medals, flags, and old photographs from the Spanish military in Melilla. Despite its small size, this museum provides an insightful overview of the city's history from a military perspective.

Our intention was simply to enjoy a bottle of wine together in a peaceful atmosphere. However, the Moroccan doorman's behavior at the entrance was completely inappropriate. He showed a blatant and unjustified lack of respect, which completely ruined our evening. I fully understand that security personnel are there to maintain order, but that does not justify a rude attitude toward respectful customers. I would appreciate it if you would take this complaint into account and act accordingly so that similar situations do not occur again. I got there at 8.30pm but they were still setting up so had to wait until 9.30pm but it was worth it. They give you a nice tapa with your drink and then the star of the show... cus cus. I had the lamb and it was heavenly. Unfortunately I couldn't finish it because the portions are huge!

Among the few places offering Moroccan food in Melilla. The service was superb in great atmosphere. Food was good, especially the squid, but some dishes like tagine were a bit bland as well.

We arrived at 9pm shortly after it opened. Was told by kitchen staff to go away and come back in 40 mins. However another member of staff showed us to a table. We order Tallins. Our food turned up cold. Both Lamb and Beef Tallins. No smell of food. No steam. Just cold food. The meat was precooked the rest of it was uncooked. Really disappointed. We paid for our drinks and left.

Pinares de Rostrogordo is a pine forest located on a plateau at the northern edge of Melilla, Spain. The area features well-maintained hiking trails and is ideal for picnics and barbecues with family or friends. It offers a different atmosphere from the city and provides a quiet, safe environment for camping. Although surrounded by military establishments, it's a peaceful place to enjoy nature.
Great park, really different from the Melilla atmosphere. Well-maintained, but you still will see some trash near the road. Perfect for camping. I was going to stay in a camping nearby, which turned out not to exist, but found this park and spent a good night there. It's surrounded by military establishments so there are police cars going around, so don't expect complete darkness, but overall quiet place and feels safe. I didn't find any facilities, but there were some benches and tables, as well as designated spots for barbecue.

I am disappointed. I am not satisfied with the quality of the dishes served. One dish was burnt, another was incomplete. I had a strong impression that the kitchen was not working well. The waiter seemed to be interested in talking to his colleagues rather than the customers. We waited a long time for service even though it was not busy at all.

(Translated by Google) It is very beautiful and very well preserved, it transmits peace when you sit there. It is well located and has many benches to see everything. Many people know this place as the siren because of the siren when you enter, well it depends on where you enter whether you will see it or not. The disgusting thing in that place in summer are the cockroaches. Telepizza Melilla - Comida a Domicilio has undergone positive changes, with customers noticing improvements in the quality of their pizza. (Translated by Google) They close very early, being in the promenade area above, the boats leave and arrive at 11:00 p.m. and you don't even have time to eat anything, because at 11:30 p.m. the place is already closed, I think it's the only place to eat that closes at that time. And a couple of days ago I also placed an order around 9:45 p.m. and they called me at 10:30 p.m. to tell me that half of the things I ordered were out of stock and I logically canceled the order. There's always something going on in this place.

(Translated by Google) A little while ago, I ordered a delivery from Telepizza in Melilla. The order was for a family member and it came out as if it had been dropped. It was also very oily and salty, and even though I ordered it with tuna, I couldn't even taste the ingredient. It was so oily that the packaging tore, and we almost ate a piece. We also ordered it with cheese-filled crusts, and they weren't filled. The ice cream we ordered came on top of the pizza and was melted. I don't know if the delivery guy was rushing to get the pizza like that and found the ice cream along the way. EVERYTHING AWFUL. (Translated by Google) A picture is worth a thousand words. Very very thin pizzas, very oily. We ordered a carbonara and a pepperoni, both very oily and in very poor condition. Very poor quality products. Unmelted, hard, inedible cheese edges. The toilet seat in poor condition, in short unpresentable. Without a doubt an experience that I would not repeat under any circumstances. Having other options on the Melilla seafront, this would be the last option without hesitation. (Translated by Google) Hello, why do I give it one star? because after a thousand disappointed orders today was definitely the straw that broke the camel's back. I ordered the famous gourmet pizzas which consist of two bases and cheese in between, but there's very little cheese as is normal in what is called a customer service business. I called to complain and a girl who was rather rude helped me but oh well, I explained the problem to her she started telling me that if I couldn't put too much cheese the dough would get ruined one thing is not putting cheese and another is not putting any cheese at all. After struggling I told her to put me through to her boss, what a coincidence she can't get there. I told her that maybe the problem is that the people she has in the kitchen lack training or maybe they haven't received enough and she told me that her cooks are professionals with a joking tone I told her if she were so professional they wouldn't bring this or like the most puffed up pizzas that seem to have air in them the colleague answers and hangs up on me I call again and the girl tells me that her boss told her that if we want the pizza Well, and if not, instead of the usual way of looking for a solution and apologizing, but I don't ask for his name and he refuses to identify himself, I hang up and call customer service to complain, and everyone should do the same. It's not just any business, it's a franchise, so it's not that they should give a good image, it's that they have to be strict.

The setting is beautiful because of the plaza they are in, the plates give it a nice presentation, my only complaint and the reason it doesn’t get 5 stars is because the steak I ordered “lomo Argentino” was half steak half fat.

(Translated by Google) Let's start with what's important, the food: - Nokis: as a suggestion you could call them ñokis de la flaca or Melilla because they are breaded pieces of chicken stuffed with cheese and accompanied by Roquefort sauce. - Potato with mojo picón: they are not wrinkled, they were cold and the sauce was not homemade. - Cracked eggs with ham: they did not come on the menu, so they billed it as “tempura egg”. I have to point out that they are called “broken” because the yolk of the eggs has to be tender, ready to crack, but they were overcooked, the fries were homemade, but raw (they took them out ahead of time) and the ham was scarce. - Grilled tuna: it was raw and they added a lot of salt. One of the waiters told us that it came with vegetables and mashed potatoes, but when another waiter brought us the dish, it came with four pieces of grilled or grilled zucchini. Now let's move on to the service: it depended on the waiter, but there were two very friendly and attentive ones (one blonde and one dark-skinned, both with goatee). Fun fact, if you pass by La Flaca, ask why it has that name and logo.

(Translated by Google) It's a shame about the poor service from the waiters. They try to deceive some customers by leaving them without tapas under the excuse that it's not yet time, but they do serve them to the rest of the tables on the terrace. In addition, there isn't even a smile to please the customer. I must admit that the beer was cold. The toilet was a disaster. I wouldn't return. No volvería

They didn't give us anything except a small handful of olives, so the price seemed extremely expensive.
