Historical landmark
Melilla la Vieja, also known as "El Pueblo," is a 16th-17th century fort with four walled enclosures and multiple museums showcasing relics. The city walls were initially built on rock in the 15th century, bearing the marks of different cultures over time. This monumental complex offers charming neighborhoods, panoramic views, watchtowers, and beautiful buildings like the Baluarte de la Concepcion and the Hospital del Rey.
Beautiful place full of rich history and charm. The blend of Spanish and Moorish influences in the architecture makes every corner feel like a step back in time. Walking through its quiet streets, you can’t help but appreciate the well-preserved fortress walls and stunning views of the Mediterranean. The serene atmosphere is perfect for those looking to escape the bustle of the city and immerse themselves in culture. Whether you’re a history buff, a photographer, or just someone who loves a peaceful stroll, Melilla Vieja is a must-visit!

There is so much packed into this area! There were so many great museums scattered throughout, great views of the sea, a few great restaurants, cats, alleyways, and so much history. Please note that to see the Cuevas deal Conventico (the archway from the sea into the land) you need to schedule a guide.

I didn’t expect too much but I left speechless. This place is incredible. It’s huge, there’s so many alleys and different places it’s like a maze, everything’s beautifully restored with plazas and gates and drawbridges and accesible watch towers. At one of the squares there’s a museum and some rooms to look into. You have to visit if you’re in the city!

Historical landmark
Cuevas del Conventico, located between El Convento and the Conventico, are a complex network of caves with three floors. Originally dug by Phoenicians, these caves were later used by soldiers for shelter and daily activities during wars. Over the years, they played a crucial role in Melilla's defenses against Moorish armies. The caves were beautifully restored between 1993 and 2000.
A must visit! A Spanish speaking guide gives you the history of the place. The tour is complimentary. Unfortunately i didn’t speak Spanish. After the cave visit our guide had keys to unlock the door that takes you down by the water. A stunning view on a beautiful sunny day. A pleasant walk down to the beach.

(Translated by Google) The Conventico Caves are, without a doubt, a fascinating corner of Melilla: a labyrinth of historical tunnels with centuries of military history and captivating legends. However, our visit was marked by frustrating contrasts that prevented us from fully enjoying it. The good: - The caves themselves are impressive, with passageways and views of the sea. - The coastal location adds a unique charm, especially because of the famous arch and shell beach. What could be improved: - Restricted access: Although we understand that bad weather can be a risk factor, not being able to go down to the beach (the only point to appreciate the arch in all its magnitude) left the visit lame. We only had the option of seeing the arch from the Military Museum, which was already closed when we left the caves visit. - Organization problems: The visiting hours published on the official website did not coincide with the real ones. In addition, it is not possible to reserve online, something essential in 2025. - Attitude of the staff: The hostesses showed a cocky and unempathetic tone regarding the impossibility of going down to the beach. In a tourist site, courtesy should be a priority. - Unused technology: Several screens and projectors were turned off or damaged, which reduced the depth of the historical explanation.

(Translated by Google) The cavities that make up the Conventico Caves were formed naturally in the sandstone cliffs by marine erosion. Due to their strategic location by the sea, they have been used as coastal refuges since ancient times by various civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs, primarily as shelter for ships and sailors. No architectural structures from this period have been documented within the complex. With the consolidation of Spanish rule over Melilla in the Modern Age, the caves began to serve logistical and defensive functions. During the Siege of Melilla in 1774-1775, they were converted into warehouses, shelters for the civilian population and clergy, and spaces for religious services. During this period, expansions and internal divisions were made, allowing for more intensive use of the underground space. In 1925, the construction of the port of Melilla transformed the cove where the caves were originally located, filling it with sand to create the current Trápana beach, which modified its access from the sea. Between 1993 and 2000, a structural rehabilitation project was carried out on the complex. The works included the consolidation of vaults with crossed arches, the construction of new brick vaults on the lower level, the plastering of walls, and the paving of streets above the caves, such as Miguel Acosta and Concepción, to prevent subsidence.

"The architect shows us a specific commissioned work, by his hero, in a street, in principle, of second category, where the boxing of the building - on three sides - and the style used —neo-Muslim—, highlighted on the outside, must preserve the religious cult to which it is intended. This same type of decoration and structure is going to be taken up by the Mr. Nieto, in the mid-forties, when he designed the Mosque Central—or masgid aljama—on García Cabrelles Street, speaking to us of a stylistic language of medieval Muslim inspiration to which one resorts, within the conventionalism of aesthetics nineteenth-century historicist, for the preparation of a constructive typology determined. In this case, as it is assimilable, it is the antagonistic to the Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine of the Christian cult." Faro de Melilla la Vieja, also known as Melilla's lighthouse, is a historic and cultural monument that was built in 1918. It is one of only four Spanish lighthouses located on the coast of Africa. The lighthouse is housed in a square building and also serves as the home of Fundacion Melilla Ciudad Monumental, which is responsible for the restoration of Melilla's historic buildings.
Located near the old town, the lighthouse is a nice spot to visit. Make sure you go inside and climb the short spiral staircase to the roof top for spectacular views especially on a sunny day.

Edificio El Acueducto is a magnificent example of Melilla Modernism, located in the center of Melilla. It is an emblematic building with a historical significance, showcasing the modernist architecture that proliferates throughout the city. The first floor of the building is particularly noteworthy, featuring custom-made elements and a mezzanine mode that separates it from the upper homes.
(Translated by Google) "Its first floor stands out, especially, as it was made to order. mezzanine mode, indicating its separation from the superiors — homes—by means of some overhangs, of turned balusters that, on curvilinear corbels with acanthus leaves and open roses, will give place to the continuous factory balconies of its main floor. Said mezzanine, extension of the ground floor in the project, points out the lintel openings with the molding of its keystone, its light encompassing, at first, the existing panel between its large pilasters. In the chamfer the architect will place his "stone" signature —model analyzed on Lope de Vega Street, 6—, confirming, with this, along with its authorship, its advertising purpose." Mercado del Real is a modernist building designed by architect Enrique Nieto. Despite being open to the public, only a few stalls are currently operating. It's unfortunate to see this BIC building in such condition. The market offers a pleasant local neighborhood atmosphere with friendly vendors offering excellent fresh produce from both local and international sources, including fruits, vegetables, and fish.

Nestled among the architectural gems of the city, El Telegrama del Rif stands out as a splendid corner building crafted by the talented architect Enrique Nieto. Completed between 1912 and 1913, this structure originally served as the headquarters for a newspaper. With an initial construction budget of 47,585 pesetas, it reflects both historical significance and artistic flair. Today, while its usage has diminished, its grandeur remains a testament to early 20th-century design in Art Nouveau style.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful building, modernist style, founded in 1898.
Sergio T — Google review
(Translated by Google) It occupies a beautiful modernist building and even its interior is very beautiful. It's a shame that the old rooms on the ground floor are currently occupied by a clothing franchise on one side and a bazaar on the other. It is also a pity that a casino with so much tradition is currently closed and without members, partly due to the use given to the rooms on the ground floor.

The lights of this wall, like than those of the principal, close their lintel highlighting the key—base of corbel—and breaking its lines into the top floor. The flights of the balconies They are configured, in their ascent, by figures geometric—triangular and trapezoidal— that extend their design in the independent grilles on the upper floors and factory parapet balusters run from its first and individualized from its mezzanine. In it, the trace used at the end stands out, when using corbels of cylindrical bodies, decreasing towards the center, whose stepped structure is continued on the upper balcony to be finished off, by means of columns, as a roof parapet with plates of frond."
