Gonia Odigitria Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Lady of Gonia or Panagia Odigitrias, is a stunning Renaissance-era Christian stronghold located near Kolymbari and Chania. Situated on a steep hill overlooking the Gulf of Chania, this ancient coastal site was originally founded in the 9th century and later relocated to its current position in the 17th century.
this monastery from 17th century is really beautiful, it played a key role during Cretes struggles under Venetian and Ottoman rule! Its just right by the sea with an amazing view of kolymbari, this panorama is just stunning! mix of Venetian and Orthodox styles, with well-preserved frescoes and a charming courtyard! its got such an interesting history too, entrance price is totally fair!! I think it just helps with upkeep, and you get to see the museum in the basement which is packed with cool old items as well. oh, and the monks make this super tasty sweet wine, definitely try it if you get the chance! the whole place is peaceful and charming, perfect for a quiet visit with great views. loved it here!

Such a beautiful place. So much history. Just beautiful, felt very emotional visiting. Breathtaking views from the top too.
Patricia H — Google review
Tickets can be bought at the entrance. Since it is a monastery, they do prefer if your shoulders are covered and down to your knees is covered as well. So much beautiful history.
Abby B — Google review
Beautiful monastery,2 euros entry fee. Lots of information. Lovely views as hight up. Free parking.
Irene R — Google review
Gorgeous and tranquil 17th Century monastery in western Crete. Stunning views from the monastery out to sea. Lots of history in this place and many artefacts to look at and read about at the monastery museum. Well worth the visit. There’s even a Turkish cannonball that stuck the monastery, still visible in the wall today. There is a €3 per person entry fee.
Vitaliy K — Google review
We visited this monastery on one of the days we stayed in Agia Marina, Crete. The monastery is located on the seashore near the town of Kolymvari. At the entrance there is a small parking lot and a deer pen. The entrance to the monastery is charged 3 euros per person, which is atypical for monasteries. In fact, I think there is an entrance fee to the museum that houses a very large collection of ancient relics. Inside the monastery I also saw a few turtles and a few parrots kept in inappropriate conditions, the turtles being kept in a small pool in the sun, the birds in a cage full of dirt. Photography and filming are prohibited inside the monastery. The view over the turquoise sea is dreamlike. I usually don't give less than 5 stars to religious establishments, but here, honestly, I didn't like how the animals are treated, and there is also an entrance fee.
Soe S — Google review
Fascinating and beautiful in equal measure. This is well worth the walk or drive from Kolymbari. There's plenty of parking. The museum is excellent showing the history of cretan school iconography and wonderful books and vestments on display.
Stuart — Google review

Nestled on the stunning Rodopou Cape, Afrata Beach is a hidden gem just 38 km from Chania. This charming pebble beach lies in a serene bay, about 1 km east of the quaint village of Afrata. With its crystal-clear waters showcasing mesmerizing shades of blue, it offers an intimate escape for those seeking tranquility away from bustling tourist areas.
Very nice beach, calm and secluded. Amazing water, not crowded. Free umbrellas and sunbeds available. Very good prices at taverna on the beach, frappe only 2.5 euro
Milena M — Google review
Nice and cozy beach with pebbles. The beach is not very big and has a tavern and a bar. It is not fancy however is has basic amenities. The road to the beach is narrow and steep. Beach is on the quite side. There are a few beach umbrellas with sunbeds. They are free of charge taken in account that you will take some beverage from the bar. Parking is more than enough. If one comes at 09:00 can find enough sunbeds and parking in the bonus parking in the shade. If you are after serenity, simplicity and basics, this is for you. Entrance in the water is with stones making it a bit difficult for small children. I gave it a 4 star being simple and basic, however on our favourite list.
Ciprian G — Google review
Picturesque and perfect secluded beach! Would come back everyday if we could - very stunning beach. Please note it is a pebble beach and does not have many sun loungers but other than that, it is fab!
Paige M — Google review
Beautiful secluded pebbly beach, umbrellas and lounges included (or so we thought!) The cafe/shop was closed when we arrived (which also meant the WC/toilet was closed). Quite a narrow, windy road to enter, waves were pretty crazy also! Shower by the beach for freshness
Lucas D — Google review
Afrata Beach is a lovely pebble beach located near Kissamos, offering a peaceful retreat from the more crowded tourist spots. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to relax in a more secluded setting. The beach is wonderfully quiet and intimate, with very few people—we counted a maximum of 15-20 visitors during our stay. One of its major draws is the convenience, with free parking available right at the beach. Visitors can also enjoy the comfort of free sunbeds and umbrellas, which are provided at no cost. Additionally, there is a good and affordable snack bar on-site, perfect for grabbing a refreshment like an iced coffee for just €2.50. If you’re searching for a beautiful, smaller beach away from the crowds, I highly recommend visiting Afrata Beach. The only thing I would rate negatively is the sign saying “Free beer tomorrow,” which is on the beach every day and there is never actually any free beer – it’s a bit misleading.
Lukáš N — Google review
Small, pebble stone beach, with wonderful clear blue water, but must have adequate water shoes. Snorkeling and scuba diving site. Free, but very few, sunbeds and umbrellas - we arrived at 11AM and there were no left, so we stayed on the sun. Bar and restaurant on the beach working all day, with the usual Greek cuisine, fair price. Free parking, with paved road all the way down to the beach (we drove a Fiat Panda and it was ok). Would come back with an umbrella and food for the day ☀️
Catarina B — Google review
Very beautiful and secluded beach. It doesn’t get crowded. You can get umbrella and sunbeds as long as you have something from the tavern. The prices are okay and the food is fresh and delicious. Only minus is that the beach is with rocks so you’ll need aqua shoes.
Hristo L — Google review
Great beach but very stoney and large pebbles. Crystal clear water, but aqua shoes necessary. Plenty of beds and brollys, free! Taverna very good with cheap prices. No rip off even though in isolated location. Cheapest carafe of very good wine that I've come across --- €4 half litre. Taxi €20 each way from Kolymbari.

This stunning beachfront property features spacious accommodations with balconies that provide breathtaking sea views. Guests can enjoy access to three outdoor swimming pools and a relaxing terrace, perfect for soaking up the sun or unwinding after a day at the beach.
One of the best accommodation we were in! Close to sea , nice locals with fresh foods etc. Clean , spacious and accessible. Helpful host and nice atmosphere. Maxed out our expectations! Thank you

Good furnished apartment with pools for the time after the beach before the dinner or on days where you don't want to go to the beach even if it is only 200m from the apartment. I had one apartment with sea view and could hear the wave from my room... Great Clean and safe with parking
Gustave ( — Google review
I'll start with the pros and then move on to the cons. Pros: The whole apartment was quite aesthetically pleasing. It had a nice smart TV and living room set up, which was great. The fridge was a great size and there was a washing machine, which came in very handy. The jacuzzi outside was awesome! We spent almost every evening outside either in or by the jacuzzi in the little hang out area. We had the jacuzzi all to ourselves. Additionally, everything was spotless when we arrived, which is always a plus. The location was also great because you're just a couple of minutes away from the beach and great restaurants. Cons: The apartment was nice, but it valued aesthetics over practicality. One of the rooms was just too small for two people. The master bedroom had a bathroom that got completely wet when using the shower and the wooden shelf under the sink was already warping from all the water. The master bathroom door was also made of glass, so at night a lot of light shone through. The beds were also a bit too hard. Additionally, there was no dishwasher. All in all though, we feel that the pros outweighed the cons and we really enjoyed our stay here!

I stayed at Aegean Breeze Luxury Apartments in July 2022 and I was blown away by the value for money. I was able to communicate with the staff and get almost instant responses in the days leading up to my trip. When I arrived very early in the morning, they arranged for me to pick up the key even though the reception was closed. The apartment was VERY spacious (two bedrooms, two bathrooms, spacious living room and kitchen area). I will definitely be back to stay with them!

Argentina Kapenekis is a fantastic family restaurant located in Kolimbari, offering amazing food and a beautiful view of the harbor and sea. The menu features delicious options such as shrimp pasta, Greek salad with whipped feta, dry grilled octopus, fried calamari, and lamb with potatoes. The seafood and salads are particularly delightful. The friendly staff provides great service in this wonderful restaurant by the coast.
If you want top choices of fresh seafood at its finest, look no further. Nice view, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Would surely recommend and revisit ☺️

Have been here on at sunday lunch time. To be fair we just had vegetarian options, but they were quite good but not exceptional.

An amazing place, with totally fresh and local fish food, in a setting that is as I remember from my childhood years. We went twice, always got the sea urchin. We loved so much this place that next year we are planning to visit Crete and stay at that village 😃 Definitely you should go.
Kostas — Google review
The food was very good, different and very good quality. The servers are very nice too. However, the price was very expensive, especially the appetizers. It was barely a few bites for 19.-. The fish by the kg was also expensive, and it was prepared with rice on the side which was not even counted in the fish price (which wasn’t specified it had to be paid extra although it’s part of the dish).
Karla K — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. If you walk through the road-side entrance (rather than the port-side) you walk through a lovely restaurant down stairs out into the plaza in front of the port. Fantastic food. Sometimes took a moment to get the attention of the staff, but on the whole a wonderful sea-side setting and delicious, high quality food. More than your standard taverna, by a long way.
Michael C — Google review
Great expectations of this place but was left disappointed! Food was good but the staff let it down. Staff chatting to each other and ingnored us...We went up to them after a few minutes waiting and asked them if we could sit down, you can sit anywhere was the response. After ordering and the food arriving we didnt see the staff again, nobody came to ask if everything was ok and would we like desert etc..infact we left our table went to the service area paid the bill and left. Lots and lots of restaurants on that stretch so having the staff fail on the basics was disappointing.

Highly recommended within all of Chania area. Fantastic food, and even greater staff makes the whole experience wholesome! Seafood platter, desserts, or other fish delicacies, you would need several trips to experience the culinary exp.

Tis Litsas Ta Kamomata is a wonderful restaurant located in the beautiful village of Afrata, near Kolymbari. It offers a fantastic view of the sea and mountains, creating a perfect dining atmosphere. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their products, providing excellent recommendations. The menu features a selection of delicious traditional dishes made with fresh ingredients.
Amazing place with delicious food. Very kind and helpful staff. You can really feel that the place is run by a family with love for food. The place itself is located on the top of the mountains with amazing view. There is also a little shop with homemade products. At the end of our supper we were gifted an amazing homemade grape liqueur. It’s a real gem and you should definitely visit this place! We spent around 50€ for two starters, two main dishes and something to drink for both of us.

Amazing restaurant in the center of a very beautiful Cretan village! We had a very nice place with a very beautiful view. Food was just excellent, everything was super fresh and super tasty 👍 The owners are very nice people. I will definitely come back again there 👍

Last night, my fiancé and I had the absolute pleasure of dining out, and the experience was nothing short of phenomenal. From the moment we walked in, everything felt warm, welcoming, and effortlessly elegant, not to mention the stunning view. Make sure to go there to watch the sunset. My fiancé ordered the massive pork chop, and it was perfectly cooked, juicy, tender, and full of flavor, with just the right balance of seasoning. I had the goat, and it was truly sublime. Melt-in-your-mouth tender, beautifully spiced, and paired with some fries. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and the atmosphere was cozy yet refined, making the evening feel all the more special. It was one of those meals that you keep thinking about long after it’s over. We can’t wait to come back!

Lovely traditional Greek taverna with wonderful views of the hills and sea. Lovely flowers make it very colourful. Lots of tables all with good views. Lovely menu with a variety of traditional home cooked food and service is very friendly. Food very tasty enjoyed homemade Greek pastries, meatballs in tomato sauce and chicken with potatoes.

This place is a gem! My girlfriend and I came to this cozy family restaurant after a full day at Afrata Beach. It’s just 4–5 minutes away from the beach. The menu isn’t huge, but everything we had tasted fresh and homemade. We started with a Greek salad, and I could really feel the quality of the ingredients—simple, but super fresh. For mains, my girlfriend had the octopus cooked in olive oil and wine sauce, and I had the meatballs with rice. The spices in the meatballs were something special—definitely the highlight for me. I’d recommend them to anyone. I also tried a bit of the octopus—it was cooked just right and the sauce was delicious. The guy who served us (I think his name was Stavros) was really polite and welcoming. The atmosphere was perfect after a hot beach day—cool fresh air, the sound of cicadas all around, and a stunning panoramic view. We loved it.

Every time I am in Crete, l go to this restaurant. We always eat a lot of starters, and end up not really having room for the main courses, but still order one or two because the food here is so good. It is worth a visit even if it is a bit far away. The owners are very nice people, and serve you in a good and friendly way. The mushrooms and spicy peppers are a must. The toilets are clean! I have been to Ta Litsas Ta Kamomata again today (07.06.2019), and the food was excellent- again!!! We were so lucky to get seats yesterday (31.07.2020), and the food and the service is as good as always!

Restaurant
Kanelis Cretan Restaurant is an excellent choice if you're looking for tender lamb. Their specialty, the lamb antikristo, could benefit from more smoke and added spices or herbs. It would also be nice to have a salad included for the price. On the other hand, the mama's lamb dish had better seasoning. The snails were delicious and packed with umami flavor. The service was outstanding, with friendly staff who were willing to explain the food.
This is the place if you are looking for perfectly cooked meat, fresh salads, great service and a great atmosphere . The specialty is lamb slow grilled and we ordered two different ones. One with garlic and wine and one with honey and rum. And boaaaaaaaaa both killed and took no prisoners🤩🤩🤩🤩Spotless service and everything was perfect👊🤩

Fantastic traditional restaurant serving delicious Cretan food. The Antikristo lamb was delicious. Lovely atmosphere and service.
Myri P — Google review
Good place to order meat, it is very cosy inside. We ordered lamb (very well cooked), fish which was also fine, but bony, I don’t recommend calamari. It was overpriced with just two pieces of calamari inside of the casserole. Few olives and plenty of olives pits at the bottom and no information about it. I realized it when I bit into one. And they were just pits without olives. So we got casserole with pits instead of olives and two pieces of calamari. servers were nice, they smiled, but when they left the table they talked quickly to each other and roll their eyes and the customer could feel like he was being talked down to. But maybe it’s just my impression. Place is okay if you want to order meat I’m pretty sure they’re famous for it.

We ordered pasta carbonara, chicken and gyros pita. The pasta was a bit cold, but the rest of the food was good. all in all a pleasant dinner.

We were advised to go to this restaurant for local dishes. It was certainly magnificent. The dishes were amazing, the service was great, thanks to the pleasant people, and the prices were reasonable. Anyone can select various salads, starters, main dishes, either with meat or vegan. Let alone the warm bread, baked warm in that restaurant and the sweet treats in the end.

Our Greek hostess recommended this place and we loved it. If you are a fan of lamb dishes this restaurant will become one of your favourites too! They offer other delicious alternatives, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. We started our 2-week holiday by having dinner here and we marked the end of our holiday by having dinner here again. The slowly cooked lamb is a must try, also the one with garlic and wine sauce (you will have dreams about it!). The snails with rosemary, the grape leaves and zucchini flowers stuffed with rice, the uniquely-flavoured rabbit, gyros, Greek salad, plus the special Cretan pilaf (a dish usually cooked for weddings and special occasions) will make your dinner an unbelievable feast. Cozy atmosphere and great service. A special thanks to Mrs. A., the lovely Romanian hostess who greeted us with a charming smile and spot on recommendations.
Bianca Z — Google review
If you are going for the grill, remember to ask what's available before sitting. I got tempted by the fire at the entrance because I wanted grilled lamb, and we went in invited by the nice lady at the entrance. The service was very good. It took them a while to hand over the menus and then take our order, but after that they were very fast and friendly. Despite the fire was on, they told me they didn't have any grilled lamb left. I asked then the waiter to recommend a dish, he recommended a stewed lamb that to be honest it was quite dull and disappointing. We also asked for a pilaf, and that wasn't good either. The rice is made in lamb fat and it tasted alright, but the presentation and the rest of the dish was not good. Two big chunks of chicken breast, a bone of lamb and a huge chunk of lamb fat with connective tissue. It looked like dog food. The dishes had a very decent size, and other's people dishes looked better than ours. Maybe we were unlucky with our choices. The appetizers were good. Lastly, it is an open space and thus it is allowed to smoke. So if you are okay with eating while inhaling other's people Marlboro, then you will be okay.

Zafferano is a delightful dining spot known for its warm hospitality and attentive service. This restaurant offers a fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisine, featuring an array of pasta, risotto, and fresh sushi prepared by the chef. Guests can also indulge in delectable salads and explore an impressive selection of wines. The beautiful setting provides a stunning backdrop, especially during sunset hours, making it the perfect place to savor an unforgettable evening.
Beautiful dishes, never thought Japenese and Italian food can mix that well.

They state "fine dining" on the menu , and in a way it is , as they have more interesting selections than the more "turist" restaurants . The service and the place it self is OK . . I had Sushi and the selection was classic and tasted as expected.

It's always a pleasure to dine in Zafferano. Very hospitable and kind people, attentive to your every need. Their specialties are Italian and Sushi food, with many options for pasta and risottos and fresh sushi made from the chef at that time. Great salads and wine list too. The setting and the view are beautiful, so enjoy it at sunset hours for the best evening you can have. The best food experience in Platanias. If you go downtown to Chania old port, make sure you also visit their other restaurant, Kariatis, which has similar menu, but instead of sushi serves pizza also. Prices are normal, as you would expect for that kind of level of dining. Will visit every time we visit Chania, definitelly recommended!

It was a great restaurant, but when they combined semi Italian cuisine with Sushi sorry it makes no sense what so ever, its was a bad business decision which I'm quite sure that you have seen the impact since introducing Sushi and the reason I'm saying this is that is what I noticed, sadly I was in the area this year and we avoided eating there, its sad beacuase it was one of my favourite and my wife's favourite restaurant, I do hope that you look into the 2018 season minus the Sushi.

Day 2

Off the beaten path
For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Anoskeli Winery. Not quite as popular as War Shelter Platanias, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Crete, Biolea Astrikas Estate offers an unforgettable experience for olive oil enthusiasts. Visitors rave about the Enthusiasts Tour, which provides a deep dive into the art of olive oil production while allowing guests to savor exceptional flavors, including delightful lemon and orange-infused oils. The tour is not just informative; it’s infused with passion and pride from the hosts, making every moment memorable.
Absolutely stunning. The tour was a great way to learn about olive oil production and to try a few types. Also ate at the restaurant which has a unique and delicious menu. The view and setting are breathtaking. Strongly recommend stopping here. I will be back.

We went for the tour and then had lunch at the restaurant. What an amazing experience! The tour was extremely professional, Elena taught us more than I ever knew about olive oil. Lunch scenery, wine and dishes were incredible.

We were here as we wanted to have the tasting menu. If this is your expectation, you have to book online in advance. Although we could not have the 8 course menu, we had the best meal we have eaten in Crete. All personal was super friendly and kind. And the food is just simply amazing. The drive is long but definitely worth it! Thank you so much for such a beautiful experience!

This was perhaps the best meal of my life. Everything was so fresh. The circle salad was awesome. And the tour was so interesting! We also really enjoyed the tasting. What a beautiful setting. We travelled all over Crete and this was such a highlight!

I highly recommend the Enthusiasts Tour at Biolea Astrikas Estate for an immersive and flavorful experience. The tour was very informative, and you can really feel the pride they take in their process. The stunning views and warm hospitality made the visit even more memorable. The meal was one of the best we had in Crete, so much so that we returned twice more to eat here. Truly unforgettable!

A very insightful tour by Alexandra who is probably the most knowledgeable person I met when it comes to olives and olive oil production. The restaurant at the estate is a fantastic dining experience.! Nothing at fault and the service was superb!
Adonis M — Google review
We came here on a whim as another one of our police oil tours wasn’t the best, we decided to try this one and it was awesome! The detail in the tour was great, really understanding the process and getting to taste GREAT olive oil! The lemon and orange flavored oil was our favorite! Bought a bunch to bring home to our family! I do wish they had bubble wrap to help us bring it home easier like some other places do. Also we were a family of 4 adults and two infants and even the kids had a great time being outside and seeing the olive trees!

The tour was great !! We learned a lot of new things about olive oils but the lunch was extraordinary. And the location is so so pretty. We had a really really nice day thanks to the staff.

Anoskeli S.A. is a charming destination nestled in the hills among olive trees, offering an informative tour of their olive oil mill and a delightful wine and olive oil tasting experience. The facility provides a well-recorded movie showcasing the various steps of olive oil production. Visitors can enjoy a modest yet delicious tasting menu, featuring award-winning olive oils and unique wines produced on a small scale.
We had an incredibly positive experience at Anoskeli Winery – a true gem in the Cretan countryside. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality, and the entire visit reflected the passion and pride behind both the wine and olive oil. We had the opportunity to taste five different wines, each with its own unique character and story – all of high quality and presented with great explanations along the way. We also tasted their award-winning olive oil, which was truly special – fresh, rich, and perfectly balanced. Accompanying the tasting was a selection of delicious local food, which complemented the wines beautifully and made the whole experience complete. The combination of great wine, tasty food, and a welcoming atmosphere made this one of the highlights of our trip. Anoskeli Winery is a must-visit if you're in the area – authentic, professional, and full of charm. We highly recommend it!

We loved our visit and wine and olive oil tasting experience at Anoskeli Winery. They have won many awards for their olive oil. There wine was also incredible. We were given a presentation on each wine prior to tasting which was very educational. They pair their wine and olive oil tasting with delicious local meats, cheese, olives, etc. I wish we could purchase their wine and olive oil from the USA.

We visited Anoskeli Winery for a wine tasting and it was a wonderful experience. Even the drive there was beautiful. the winery is located about 25 minutes from Platanias, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival and given a clear explanation of the tasting experience we had booked. It included five different wines and two types of olive oil, all locally produced right at the winery. Everything we tasted was delicious, and the plate of cheeses and spreads served alongside was excellent. Overall, it was a lovely visit, relaxing, flavorful, and very well hosted. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area!

An unforgettable experience at Anoskeli Winery! We tasted a wonderful selection of wines (white, rosé, red) as well as raki, all beautifully presented by the lovely ladies working there. They were incredibly kind, welcoming, and made us feel right at home. The place itself is stunning, peaceful, and truly feels like it’s away from the world. We also got to taste their amazing olive oil, simply incredible! A must-visit if you’re in the area. 🍷✨

I’m lost for words really. The customer service from Efi was impeccable, we tasted some outstanding wines and some truly delicious olive oil! All of which was great value, we bought a bunch to take home for ourselves and as gifts too. We will definitely be back in the future! Don’t forget the stunning views around the vineyards too!

We went for olive oil and wine tasting, and it was a fantastic experience. She explained the flavor profiles in detail, and we really came to appreciate the beauty of their olive oil and wine. The flavors were amazing — just one sip impressed me so much that I kept going back for more. Each wine had its own unique character, and the olive oil was so fresh and smooth. The atmosphere was peaceful and welcoming, and we could truly feel the love and care that went into their products. Highly recommended!

Former residents of Sonoma Country California, and now making Crete our home, we know our wine. And the wines (and olive oil) here are delightful! But they are ever so slightly eclipsed by the warmth and knowledge of the hospitality staff. We have visited quite a few wineries here on Crete but the experience at Anoskeli was the most enjoyable!

The best Winery in chania with amazing professional staff like Effie and Giannis from Chania wine 🍷 tours. Highly recommended to sit taste the local exquisite olive oil that has won 🏆 gold awards. The wines are some of the best in the region with taste that will excite your sensors. We had an amazing tasting and will be back again. I suggest in buying some products to take home with you so you can keep enjoying the flavours. Thanks again for great hospitality experience 💙🇬🇷🏖🍷👍

Loved this place, we stopped for a cocktail before heading back to our villa. The mood and atmosphere was so chilled...reggae music playing in the background and the sound of the waves on the shore made it feel so relaxed. The cocktails were priced much the same as the rest of Crete, with a very good choice, the service was quick and friendly too. Good drinks prepared and presented well. Would deffo recommend if you fancy a decent drink.

What a superb location. Across the road from the beach. The luxury of comfy chairs like these is to be savoured as they are few and far between in Crete. This place is well worth a visit as the choice of drinks on offer will be what anyone could wish for. There is even a pool table inside. The free WiFi is the fastest I have come across on the island.

Thalassa Restaurant & Bar is a delightful culinary gem nestled by the sea, offering an enchanting dining experience that perfectly captures the essence of Mediterranean cuisine. Guests can indulge in a variety of authentic Cretan dishes, all crafted with fresh ingredients and unique spices that tantalize the taste buds. The atmosphere is enhanced by soothing piano melodies at nearby bars and refreshing cocktails served poolside, creating a serene backdrop for your meal.
excellent food: especially the shrimps were the best although is was the appetizer. Different Steaks are the specialities, I recommend the lamb, tender and well flavored. The both waiter/waitress Giorgos and Kiki were so kind and professionell, what made the dining very comfortable. Strongly recommend this restaurant when you stay in Platanias!.

Had a wonderful dinner at this lovely restaurant with our family (including 1 yo). A nice variety of appetisers and salads. Main dishes are grill only. No vegetarian options. All dishes we ordered were cooked/grilled/presented perfectly. We are coming back at least once before the end of our holiday here.

The worst greek food a la carte I have ever eat!! The tuna was overcoked, the pork souflaki was a fatty gum that you cannot chew. The service very slow at lunch. Never again!
Ruxandra — Google review
What a lovely atmosphere and excellent service. You need to book in advance. We went for dinner sitting outside. We got lamb picanha and Angus beef 🍖 steak. The lamb dish was at its best! One of the best lamb dishes, I have ever tasted! But my husband's steak wasn't that expected. That's the only reason, I gave it 4 stars. Dessert was excellent, white 🤍 forest! For wine, we got a French one as a glass, it wasn't that good. Maybe other wines would be better, or depending on one's taste. For fine dining, it's really very reasonable price!

I had a fabulous dinner with colleagues and friends at this lovely restaurant. It was a challenge to pick a dish from the menu as everything was tempting, from the starters to the main dishes, as well as the sides. Aside that, the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming thanks to the seats, the design, the music. The staff and the sea view were just stunning.

Restaurant
Ariadne is a charming seaside establishment offering picturesque vistas and welcoming staff. The exceptional desserts set it apart from other dining options in Crete. However, there is one minor complaint about the kitchen not removing the prawn's intestinal tract before cooking. While not extraordinary, Ariadne surpasses neighboring restaurants, especially with their traditional Greek dishes as opposed to tourist-oriented fare like burgers and pasta. Though the interior appears slightly dated, the grilled shrimp with rice pleased the taste buds.
We came here around 7pm when it was very quiet, which was good because after around 8 it got really busy. I can see why it's popular though. The atmosphere and view is beautiful, it's right on the beach. And the food is wonderful. We ordered Souvlaki, Beef burger and the cretan burger, all of which were amazing. At the end we got some watermelon with the bill, which was a nice touch for a perfect meal.

What an absolutely lovely place! The first time we had lunch at Ariadne we chose at random among the many similar Beach cafes. But the service stood out a mile! Very, very family friendly, my children LOVED the staff. Add the wonderful food (The best moussaka in Platanias, for sure! And they have desserts to die for...) how could We not come back, again and again? So that one meal turned into many more, it became our stop. I cannot recommend high enough.

Kyano is a fantastic seaside spot for relaxation and dining. I highly recommend trying the intriguing Orange wine from Anatolikos Vineyards, which is fermented and aged unfiltered with native yeasts. This unique wine showcases its authenticity by displaying visible residues inside the bottle. It offers a nostalgic taste of ancient winemaking traditions. On the palate, one can detect hints of apricot, honey, pineapple, and orange peel. While the food may not be extraordinary, the service is exceptional.
Fantastic place with outstanding food and atmosphere. We tried both ceviches, prawn, mushrooms pasta and Greek spreads. All delicious and fresh. Big thanks to the amazing waiter (sorry I don't know his name) for making us feel welcome and taking care of us. Shame that we discovered that place so late. Highly recommended

What a superb restaurant. If your in the area, near the area or driving through I highly recommend this restaurant. It's right on the beach with a lovely view out to sea.uou can use the sunbeds if you are a customer. Everywhere was clean and tidy. The staff were so friendly and polite and looked smart in thier uniforms. We ordered a prosciutto pizza and a kleftiko lamb. For dessert we had tiramisu and baklava with ice cream. To drink we had still water and a large draught lager. The bill came to €64. The food tasted so nice and fresh. It was delicious. We are definitely going back again. Please check the photos for the menu as there is something for everyone. Thank you for an amazing meal.

Visited in september, and had the worst dining-experience in Crete - by far!! Do not visit this place, unless you are accompanied by a man or a large group. Females - watch your drinks and leave asap if you feel unwell or "off". Do NOT let the waitstaff sit down next to you if you are wearing a dress or similar. Stay happy, and stay safe ladies.

Tasteless dry mest. All of the food was missing taste i general. There was a lot of noise inside the restaurant, from an aircondition, so you could't hear what the other persons were saying. The waiters was very kind and happy.

Worst food I had in Platanias. I first tried to order the ribeye steak, but unfortunately the cook didn’t want to serve it since they had just received it in. The server offered us the filet instead, which we declined — but he pushed back and asked why we didn’t want the filet. Bit of a weird interaction, since if we wanted the filet we would order that, but ok. Instead, I ordered the spare ribs. What I was served was a boneless slab of gelatinous meat, absolutely drenched in barbecue sauce. I honestly have no idea what it actually was. The texture and taste were so bad I could only eat half. Worst spare ribs I’ve had in my entire life, and that includes the microwaveable ones. The location was nice and modern, and the raki was good — but the server almost forced us to drink it, pouring more into our glasses even after we said no. It’s a good place to watch the sunset and maybe grab a beer or two, but I definitely wouldn’t go there for the food.

The center boasts an array of quality souvenirs at reasonable prices and provides cozy spots to relax between shopping sprees. Although smaller than typical UK shopping centers, OLEA still delivers a charming atmosphere perfect for families and visitors alike.

I just don’t know quite what to make of this. A relatively small open-floor shopping center with a dozen shops or so. Nothing really exclusive, nothing really local, just mostly touristy things, that some might find fancy. Guess I’m just a different kind of tourist :) Two thing’s worth mentioning: there’s a Bank of Crete ATM in the far end, and there’s 24h parking in the basement. That’s nice :)

I visited Vithos Sea’s Treasures earlier today and bought some jewelry. In the evening, I wore the jewelry and returned to the store, but was unexpectedly accused of stealing. I showed proof of the card payment from earlier, but the staff member didn’t believe me and demanded a receipt, which I no longer had with me. I understand they might have had concerns, but the way I was treated was aggressive and unprofessional. The situation could have been handled with more respect and basic customer service.

Platanias Beach is a vast sandy stretch located in the charming Platanias village, just 11 km from Chania. It's a popular spot with younger crowds due to its collection of hotels and beach bars. The beach is well-equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and water sports facilities. While it can get wavy at times, there are also days with calm waters perfect for swimming and floating around.
Lovely beach in Crete where you can go swimming. Have great food at the restaurants lining the beach. Enjoy the sun and sea. Take a ride on a water scooter. And, if you’re lucky catch some waves on your surfboard 🏄‍♀️ in the port by the pier!
HelenaAndTheSea — Google review
Really nice stretch of beach. Many restaurants offer use of sun chairs and umbrellas with any food or drink purchases, so it's easy enough to find a good spot. We stayed at Sonios hotel right along the beach and most of that area was perfect because of all the space. It can get very wavy though depending on the day. During the week we probably had 3-4 days where the water was calm enough to just float around, and they other 3 were a lot more rough so not as good if you aren't the best swimmer.
Caleb — Google review
Worst beach I have ever been to. At the lightest waves the lifeguards put a red flag on the beach and do not allow anyone in the water. They are aggressive and yell at everyone who gets in the water even up to their belly. The sea was lightly wavy every day so I never got to swim there.
Dinu N — Google review
Ignore the ratings, it is nice, even couple of trees with free shadow but it is a very windy region and red flag is almost always up which means you cannot swim...long story short if you just want to chill at the beach, reading something is fine, if you want to swim...slim chances... PS: Even when you can swim, it is very deep, dirty and has rocks in the water, at least from.where i entered ...

Average beach, not as nice as nearby Agia Marina. Mix of sand and shingle, not easy to walk on but probably fine if your going straight on the water or on a lounger. Fair bit of rubbish around and the attached bars are, again, average. Basically OK, but easily beaten by Agia Marina beach.
Ec2208 — Google review
I find it's necessary to clarify some things after reading reviews made for 2 beaches ('Paralia' and 'Beach' Platanias) that in fact are sections of the same 2 km long beach. On the East side(right hand looking to the sea) the beach starts after Marina=sheltered bay where boats go especially to Thodorou islet. First 200 m after the pier the entry in the water is very rocky with a slippery seabed and shallow water for at least 100 m. Please note that there is stunning for snorkeling with best part near the pier. Quiet area with some shadow under pines and parking lot on premise. After those 200 m measured from Marina to the left looking the sea the entry in the water is smooth with 2-3 m of small rounde stones and the sand as long as we manage to swim. And is lije that for few kilometers to Gerani but there of course is not the subject of the Platania beach/paralia. The sections with sunbeds and free areas to put your towel alternates somehow respecting the new rule to keep around 40% free area. You will have plenty of space to put your towel and umbrella no matter the season. Regarding the water have to say that it is crystal clear when no waves and becomes cloudy when choppy with medium to big waves, very beautiful to play but with the downside that you cannot see the bottom due to the sand moved with the waves. At Paralia Platanias on this map there is an improvised parking lot directly behind the beach, 10 m distance. Also big pines that provide shadow all day long. Lot of tavernas/beach bars that rent sunbeds for around 5-12 E a set if you spend little money for a drink bring to sunbed or eat on their tables. So long story short Platanias beach is one in fact but 2 on Maps and this 1 offer various shoreline conditions that are'n accurately described when someone review with 'rocky' or 'all sandy'. If you walk a little bit near the water for sure will find the perfect spot for you!

Great place to watch local football, and other international sports. Food better than expected, and prices were okay! A very nice sports bar in Chania, would visit again.

Lovely little place with a brilliant atmosphere. Staff made us comfortable and welcome. Amazing pool table at the back of the bar which only costs 2 euro! Super affordable and good quality food and drink. Couldn't recommend this place enough! Will be back!

If you're in Crete and looking for the perfect mix of great food, warm hospitality, and an unbeatable atmosphere, look no further than New Planet Cafe in Platanias. This isn’t just a sports bar, it’s a home away from home. From the moment you walk in, George, the owner, and his incredible team make you feel like family. Their friendliness isn’t just good service, it’s genuine. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, you're welcomed like you belong. The food is absolutely top-notch. The portions are generous, the flavours are bold, and the quality is consistent. Pair your meal with a cold beer or a cocktail while catching the game on one of their many screens, there’s no better way to spend an evening. The atmosphere is electric during big matches, yet relaxed enough for a casual night out. Whether you're a die-hard sports fan or just in for the vibes, the energy is contagious. The decor is stylish and welcoming, with just the right balance of modern flair and local charm. And if you're traveling with kids, they’re incredibly welcoming to families. It’s a place where everyone feels comfortable, no matter their age. What truly sets New Planet Cafe apart is the sense of community. George and his staff don’t just serve, they connect. They remember your name, your favourite drink, and they genuinely care that you’re having a great time. It’s the kind of place you’ll keep coming back to, not just for the food or the football, but for the people. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Platanias. Whether you're here for a holiday or a local looking for your new favourite spot, New Planet Cafe is the place to be. Christos (Australia)

The best breakfast and the best evenings!! We played Polish music on tv, singing with the staff all evening. Felt very welcome, like family!❤️ You can also watch sports there. Best beer and very good orange juice. Thank you very much we will never forget it:)

This place is just amazing! The food, the drink, the atmosphere, but above everything else for me, it was the friendliness of the owner Giorgos and the staff! We stumbled on the cafe by pure coincidence and it was the best place we visited. We ended up grabbing a coffee in the morning, a lunch around noon and some drinks in the evening watching the euro 2024 (Germany vs Scotland). I will make sure to bring a football jersey from my home town as a gift on my next visit in Crete! I strongly recommend visiting this place! 10/10

Platea is a delightful dining spot that offers a variety of delicious options, making it an ideal choice for food lovers. During my visit in late August, I enjoyed the chicken gyros and chicken souvlaki, both of which were outstanding. The service was friendly and efficient, contributing to a pleasant atmosphere. While the fries were among the best I've tasted, I found the pork ribs didn't quite live up to expectations.
Nice place for breakfast or brunch in a convenient and central location. The menu is nothing too fancy but the place doesn't try to be, but the food was great and the prices were decent as well. It is more a leisure place but service was good and we enjoyed it very much.

The food and service were absolutely amazing, we went in the early evening when it was even quieter. Neat and clean place (wouldn't believe it's open 19 hours a day). Kids portions were big and tasty, gluten free pizza was better than usual in restaurants / frozen bases. The burger was also well made and a large portion.

One of the best restaurants in the Platanias! Service and food were both really good, and also the venue is very modern! They also have really flexible attitude, we needed some protein for the Mangosalad, and they just added some chicken in the salad! Burgers were also very delicious and portions were big!
Ville T — Google review
We ate during late noon in August, so not many people ate at that time. Ordered chicken gyros, chicken Souvlaki and pork ribs. The service was kind and excellent and fast enough, and the chicken dishes were excellent. The fries was one of the best. Unfortunately, the ribs didn't meet the high standard. Great place to eat in, just don't order the ribs.

Half of our group attended to reserve a table, we have certain dietary restrictions that could not be met so decided to leave (before we ordered anything). We were at the table no longer than 2 minutes The waiter/host was very rude and told us “you can’t leave if you have already sat down” as we left he said in a very sarcastic way “very clever, good luck”, he stared at us until we were out of sight… Most of us have customer service background and were shocked at the reaction especially due to the reason being dietary restrictions??

Went here for lunch one day. Ended up having the daily dish which was a green salad and a chicken souvlaki to the price of 12€. The deal itself was nice, but looking at the prices in the menu the regular dishes was expensive. It tasted ok, but you could get better souvlakis for a cheaper price elsewhere, don’t think its worth paying full price. It’s also located underneath some trees where grasshoppers can make a lot of noise on top of the main road.

War Shelter Platanias

Historical landmark
The War Shelter Platanias offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical events of the Battle of Crete during World War II. This museum features well-preserved tunnels that served as a war bunker during the largest airborne invasion in history, Operation Mercury. Visitors can explore over 150 meters of tunnels housing weaponry, uniforms, maps, and other artifacts from this significant period in history. The shelter is located near Platanias town and provides an educational experience for enthusiasts interested in WWII history.
I recommend it to anyone interested in World War II history. It is an unusual museum because it is located in carved tunnels. Though small, it is very interesting. The history behind these tunnels is worth delving into. It's really fascinating. I won't reveal any details. Once you are there, you will see and read all about it and get answers to your questions. Admission costs 5 euros. The museum is located high up on a mountain, so you will have to take a short walk to get there. It's worth it, though, because the views are beautiful, apart from the museum itself.
Tomek D — Google review
Underground galleries created in World War 2, a nice historic visit through 200m tunnel. Was ok, could have been better. Missed some information, a lot of war remains packed together without coherence. 5€ admission. Unfortunately opening times were not clear online: starting from end of April they are opened everyday 1000-1200h (except Sunday) for the tourist season. Some parking spots (10-15) next to entrance.

Opening hours, see photo. A bit old history and a must for people interested in WW-II. Some items good and interesting but also damaged and corroded items. Cool in the cave.

When you visit Platanias, be sure to stop by Apolafsi Restaurant. It's a family-owned establishment that warmly welcomes guests. The staff is friendly and has a great sense of humor. Their cuisine is delectable, with generous portions that are perfect for those with a hearty appetite. The spareribs are particularly outstanding, tender and flavorful. Another recommendation is the Greek meatballs in tomato sauce, served with tasty vegetables on the side.
Top notch! Very good service, nice atmosphere and the food was great! Wife only ordered the grilled halloumi and said it was the best meal she had our whole stay. The Ceasar salad was also very good. Took a side of fried feta which was unnecessary because the big portions. We went home early because we were so full. Nice view over the main street of Platanias, love looking at people walking by.

Super good, tasty food! Kind and humorous staff, made the experience even better. We got tzatziki and grilled bread as starters, the tzatziki really good, with the perfect amount of garlic! I ordered the ‘meatballs in tomato sauce’ and my mom ordered the stuffed peppers. Both were big portions, too big for us to finish. But if you’re hungry and looking for tasty food and a comfortable milieu, pay this restaurant a visit! With our check/bill we received a piece of cake or pie with ice cream, which is a big plus.

The bread we got (and payed for) were stale and dry, the soda we got was dead with no fizz. Pleasant staff - but our first waiter kept insisting to take a vodka shot, even though I was clear about us driving.

To Souvlaki tou Platania is an excellent choice for a quick and satisfying meal in Platanias. With a diverse menu offering various dishes, the food is consistently tasty with a balanced portion of meat, potatoes, and pita on each plate. The grilled sticks are also highly recommended, whether enjoyed at the restaurant or as takeout. Although it would be nice if tzatziki was included with the gyros plates and pitas, it can be ordered on the side.
Great food place to grab a meal! We went here according to the reviews, and we're very happy with our choice! The food was very good and a nice amount of meat/potatoes/pita on our plates. The price was also reasonable, would visit again!

To Souvlaki tou Platania is hands down the best place in town for souvlaki. The food is absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection with fresh ingredients and authentic flavors that make every bite memorable. The service is quick, and the staff are incredibly friendly, adding a warm and welcoming touch to the experience. While the souvlaki is a must, don’t miss out on trying other local dishes such as skepsati or Cretan specialties – they are just as impressive and won’t disappoint. A true gem in Platanias that combines great taste, atmosphere, and hospitality. Definitely a well-deserved 5/5!

I’ve been to this restaurant in Platanias twice now, and both times were absolutely wonderful! The service is exceptional – the staff are attentive, warm, and very knowledgeable, which makes the whole experience feel extra special. The food is amazing, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. I also really appreciated how clearly everything was marked on the menu, with plenty of gluten-free options, which made choosing dishes easy and stress-free. The atmosphere is lovely, relaxed, and welcoming, and the beautiful views make it an even more memorable place to enjoy a meal. It’s rare to find a restaurant that ticks all the boxes, but this one truly does. Highly recommended!!

Incredible resturant from the food to the people to the vibe just beautiful, the food is both fresh and delicious. Our waiter for the night came around with shots for everyone and was both funny and incredibly nice, when we went to pay the power went out so we had to wait an additional 30 or so minutes but the people there made it feel like 5 minutes, we were taken very good care off. Both the appetizers and the main course were amazing!

An absolutely fantastic culinary experience with phenomenal views. Very friendly and attentive service. All the food we had was exceptional. Plenty of complimentary drinks provided as well to cap off our evening. The views are truly spectacular! Make sure you book in advance and try to request a table as close to the view as possible. This experience was truly memorable. Possibly one of the best restaurants we have dined at over our last few years of travelling over 25 countries in four continents!!

We had a lovely meal here with a stunning view. Unfortunately the waiters made the experience not very enjoyable. They were constantly screaming around to talk to one another and pass on orders. Also otherwise they did not deliver the service level and friendliness we have experienced so far in Crete. Great food but rather stressful environment to eat in.

We took a liking to this place after our accidental hike while exploring the upper streets of Platanias. We climbed the old wooden stairs and emerged right in the garden of this restaurant with a beautiful view of the sea and Agia Marina. The friendly owner gifted us with two chilled waters after the climb. We had to come back here and had a delicious Greek salad. They also have excellent cocktails, as we found out a few days later on our last evening in Crete. A lovely farewell. I hope we will be back.
Martin V — Google review
We visited Astrea twice during our vacation, and both experiences were excellent. The staff were highly professional and attentive, making us feel genuinely welcomed and well taken care of. To start, we had garlic bread with tzatziki, which was incredibly flavorful. For the main course, I had the beef fillet on both visits — it was, without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had in Platanias. Perfectly cooked, tender, and bursting with flavor, it was served with a delicious mix of grilled vegetables, sweet potato mash, and sweet potato chips. Every element on the plate complemented the meat beautifully. We will absolutely be returning for another outstanding meal and the nice view.

Such a lovely dining experience. The staff were super lovely and accommodating. The meal was filling and tasty. I have a strong sweet tooth and their deserts did not disappoint. I loved every minute. No, no and no. First “no” goes for hygiene. The toilets had an awful smell, where I sat were hundreds of ants under my pillow and I noticed after several of them started walking on me and we were moved to another table and last by not least we found a hair in one the burgers which they offered to replace but our kids were extremely hungry so we, and take full responsibility, just removed the hair. Second “no” goes for their specialty, the ribs. Any recipe one will look up even on the Internet says to score the meat as little as possible so as to preserve juices and flavor. The scoring here was up to the bone, I have never seen anything like this before, which resulted in a dry and blunt meat. Third “no” goes for the overall taste which left us nothing to remember for the amount of money we spent. We gave the service a hard time with the order and they were the only ones who actually coped in this place and did hardly any mistakes. Wouldn’t visit again for no reason.
Akis K — Google review
It's a cozy place that's reasonably fine in there and the waiters pay attention to one. Besides, they're not out on the street to get people in either. The food was really good and the prices were reasonable, it's a place I would recommend and even come again. The best spare ribs I've got in Crete

The food isnt worth talking about, dry ribs, normal borring burger, a suflaki that didnt have any bite to it and a chicken as dry as the ribs🙈 Considering the price tag, that is abit higher then normal, the food should be better or match the service 😄

Beach
Paralia Menies is a secluded and stunning pebble beach located in the western part of Crete, making it a perfect destination for adventure seekers. Accessing the beach can be quite challenging, as it requires a long journey either by 4x4 vehicle or by hiking along the coastal path. Despite its remote location, the crystal-clear waters and clean sandy shore make it an ideal spot for sunbathing and snorkeling.
Exceptional place mostly accessible by boat or 4x4... Definitely worth visiting but have an umbrella ,pack lunch and have water with you as the beach doesn't have any of those things
Konstantinos K — Google review
Little piece of heaven! Amazing beach! Perfect for swimming all day, from morning to night. Remember to bring water and food, since the closest village is about 30 minutes away. A 4x4 will definitely make the driver feel better for this drive. But it is not an impossible dirt road for a standard vehicle. The last 3 klm are pretty bumpy because the road includes plenty of rocks. All in all, totally worth it!! Beautiful drive as well!! Crete at its prettiest, rawest form!!!
Stelios R — Google review
We were in our own car, the road is of course bad for cars, the beach is gorgeous. You can drive right up to the beach - it's convenient. Take food, water, there is nothing there.
Яна Ш — Google review
Secluded beach, tough to reach due to the road condition but you have to be careful and patient - it can take a good hour with an average speed of 10-15km/h. Once in a while a boat with tourists can come for an hour or two but at most of the time it is empty - just for you and the goats going around.
Simeon F — Google review
In most winter days you can enjoy this beach for yourself. I have seen some people snorkeling in the bay, but cannot share an experience of my own. You habe to be careful with the jellyfishes in the water. They bay is wind protected so even sunbathing at 16 degrees is possible. The path is mainly dirt road for 30 minutes at the end.
M. ( — Google review
We visited this beach and left with no words. The waters were crystal clear with clean sand with pebles to sunbathe. Beautiful ocean floor for the snorkeling enthusiasts! Tons of fishes of all kinds as well. The area is not easy to access cause its a 45 minute car ride through rough terrain. But it's definitely worth the visit. Lots of goats and sheep are present and the drivers need to care were to park their car. The beach is not considered family friendly.
Athina M — Google review
A beautiful beach with mointains and valley’s surrouding it. There are also feral goats inhabting the area
C_ark — Google review
A long journey but well worth it. The journey will take you approximately an hour from where the gravel road starts. It is recommended that your vehicle is 4x4, however, the route is doable with a standard front wheel drive as well. We drove the route in a Nissan Micra (tiny car). Watch out for the mountain goats on the way there and drive carefully. The beach is far away from touristy spots making for a relaxing trip - we were the only ones there for a while. Bring water and snacks. Also possible to bring grill food if you want to barbecue on the beach; there are fire pits on the right side of the beach by the cave. Best spot for snorkeling, lots of big fish. Water is clear and gets deep quite fast. There are two beach chairs for sitting but bring your own umbrella or seek shade under the caves adjacent to the water.

Best place to have surf lessons or sup lessons. Amazing and experienced coaches. You can rent boards if you know how to surf. Beautiful spot. Sunset yoga classes are also available twice a week.

My daughter had her very first surfing lesson with Surfing Crete, and it was an unforgettable experience! The team was amazing – so patient, motivating, and fun. They made her feel comfortable from the first moment, and thanks to their great teaching style, she managed to stand on the board and truly enjoy the waves. We’re so grateful for this wonderful introduction to surfing. Highly recommended for families and beginners!
CATELUȚA B — Google review
I have never been surfing before and had a great time. We were a group of 6. At first you get some basic infos and then you‘ll get in the water. With the help of the instructor I stood on the board and then managed to do it on my own. Price is totally fair. Overall I had a wonderful first surfing experience.
Niklas — Google review
Brilliant and highly recommended! The guys are so friendly and kind - excellent instructors who step you through the techniques steadily and then make sure you are both safe and comfortable. We were a family of 6 (youngest 12) so really good if you want younger children to be involved (noting some locations require minimum age 16 for more challenging coast). Wonderful experience for a family - definitely making memories! Efcharisto gentlemen 🙏
Adam C — Google review
We had a small group (6 people) and a very friendly teacher! The waves weren't that big as the ones the day before (when we just watched and decided to give it a try), but it was perfect for beginners! Totally recommend it!

As complete beginners we caught our first waves and loved every minute. Super fun, safe, and professional. The instructors are patient, motivating, and know the best spots. 100% recommend even if you if sport isnt your thing

Agia Lake Park is a hidden gem located just 9 km west of Chania, near the charming village of Agia. This artificial lake spans an impressive 450 acres and connects to the lush Fasa valley, known for being one of Crete's most fertile areas. As you enter Agia Lake Park, you're enveloped by the tranquil sounds of nature—leaves rustling in the breeze and water gently lapping at the shore.
there is a very beautiful lake with many small animals and birds. you can walk around it, and sit for coffee. a very beautiful place that you must go to see

Super nice for a chilled walk around the lake
Ioanna P — Google review
Fantastic place for picnics, walking, running, and also place with bird observatory/park . Perfect for children.
Petr K — Google review
Lake is nice but that path around it stops at one point so you can't fully walk around the lake.
Chiel H — Google review
Not sure we found the right spot, but definitely don’t follow the gps to this location. We never found any signs or real parking area or open trails.

Agia Park Lake: A Tranquil Oasis of Natural Beauty Nestled in the heart of a lush environment, Agia Park Lake is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. As soon as you step into the park, you are greeted by the soothing sounds of nature, the rustling of leaves, and the gentle lapping of water against the lake's edge. The lake itself is a crystal-clear wonder, reflecting the sky and surrounding greenery in its calm surface. It's a perfect spot for those who enjoy kayaking or paddle boating, offering a peaceful journey across its expanse. The water is so clear that you can often see the fish swimming just below the surface. For nature enthusiasts and bird watchers, Agia Park Lake is a paradise.

Peaceful place that reminds me of my home country a lot
Tatiana M — Google review
Artificial lake and lot of trashes around the lake. I really didn't see the beauty that someone has told. Ofcourse you can see some birds, but that's it. So if you wan't to see real lake go to Kournas.

Nestled in the heart of Crete, Pirgos is a culinary gem that has captured the hearts of many visitors since its inception. My husband and I first discovered this delightful restaurant back in 2019, and we were so enchanted by our experience that we returned three times during our week-long stay. Fast forward to 2025, and we're once again indulging in its charm for another week, having already dined there twice!
The first time my husband and I went to this place was in 2019 and it was so incredible back then, that we went back 3 times during our 1 week stay in Crete! Now in 2025, we're also staying for one week and we've already visited twice! The atmosphere is cosy, inviting and warm, and the staff are funny and welcoming. The food is amazing, with lots of flavour and big portions. Absolutely such a wonderful restaurant! Every time I'm in Crete, I will be back. ☺️

We had dinner at this place at our first night. The service is very friendly. They give you all the information you want and bring water upfront. The food is very delicious, no comparison to the fast food places/tourist traps on the same street. You should definitely go to this place

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 An outstanding restaurant! 🍴✨ The food was absolutely delicious, the service impeccable, and the atmosphere simply superb and welcoming. Everything was at the highest level, from the staff’s attention to the taste of the dishes. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable culinary experience! 💖👏 We will definitely come back!!💞

Very typical and taste restaurant, was soo good Beef Stifado. Service 5 stars, our waiters was so friendly. Perfect combo quality-price
Fabio S — Google review
beautiful food here and we are really fussy. We only like the best and don’t mind paying for the best. our gin and tonics were the perfect strength so not weak at all and the food was exquisite because is was so fresh and cooked to perfection. my tuna salad even had my favorite dip on top - taramasalata and when i added avocado it was too good.
Erica L — Google review
You feel welcome by the whole staff. Menu competence and good cretan wine. Sea bass and spareribs were both deligthful. Greek music in the speakers but not too loud. Close by the road but not ruining the relaxed atmosphere. People from many countries visiting from the hotels nearby. We will be back!
Trond E — Google review
Excellent service and funny waiters. Lamb chops was a bit dry, but pizza and pasta worked well.
Jarkko K — Google review
We had spaghetti carbonara and spaghetti with shrimp. Both were very good, with large filling portions and great sauce. Service could be better, given that we were there in the early afternoon with limited acitivity. Place is in general cute, but also had limited fans and no aircondition as is the norm for crete, so order ice if its warm!

Alright, foodies, let me tell you about this absolute gem I stumbled upon recently: Drakiana Restaurant. Seriously, if you're ever in the area, you have to check it out. Locals rave about it, and now I totally get why it's become a firm favourite – it's certainly got a special place in my heart now, and my stomach! A Slice of Countryside Heaven First off, the vibe? Just gorgeous. Drakiana is tucked away right by a lovely flowing stream, giving it this super serene, rustic feel. You genuinely feel like you've escaped into the peaceful countryside, miles away from any town noise. It's the perfect backdrop for a proper chill meal. Don't Forget to Book! We actually got pretty lucky with a table, but honestly, you'd be mad not to call ahead and book. Most of the tables were already reserved, which just goes to show how popular this place is! Once we were settled in, though, our taste buds were in for a treat. The Food – Oh, the Food! We tried a few bits and bobs from the menu, and everything was spot on. The Avocado Salad was a fresh and vibrant start, proper delicious. But the real star of the show, the absolute showstopper, was the Meat Pie. And get this – Theresa herself, the legend behind the place, bakes it! It was just… excellent. Rich, packed with flavour, and proper comforting. You could taste all the heart and soul that went into it. The whole team there was brilliant too – super attentive and made us feel so welcome from the moment we walked in until we rolled out. Drakiana isn't just about eating; it's a whole experience. High-quality food, a charming atmosphere, and genuine hospitality. If you're after a fantastic meal in a beautiful, unique setting, you've got to give Drakiana a go. It's a true countryside gem, I promise you!

Amazing atmosphere. Rather loud from all the cicadas so if you’re looking to easily talk it’s best to visit later when the cicadas have gone to bed. Service was great, very friendly staff. Food was delicious.

A true hidden gem. A family owned business in the heart of nature. We had lunch; had liver, vine leaves, lamb chops and a salad. Everything very tasty and really well made. The atmosphere in this place is magic! We spend a lovely afternoon. The place was packed so I recommend making a reservation in advance.

Really special place, beautifully placed in nature, close to a small river. The food was classic cretan food. Good taste, and nicely presented. The waiters spoke good English, so we communicated well. I would like to go back for both the good food and the beautiful wiew. Recommended.

Based on the good reviews, we tried to get a table on a Sunday afternoon but were turned away as they had no availability. We then returned on the Tuesday afternoon, it was much quieter and we were able to get a table. The service was good and the location and setting of the restaurant is beautiful. We ordered garlic bread, sesame salad, moussaka, giouvetsi and dessert. The food was good but not the best and I would say this restaurant is overhyped in comparison to some others like Leventis in Stalos. Moussaka was pretty good and sesame salad was really tasty. However the giouvetsi was lacking taste and the dessert (chocolate cake) was very standard with artificially flavoured ice cream. Overall I’d give this place a 7/10, it isn’t bad by any stretch but didn’t blow us away like other reviews had us believe it would.

This is a place that is must visit when you are in Platanias or in this area of Creta. Amazing atmosphere in a deep shadow, close to a small river. Staff is very friendly, honest and helpful. Highly recommend to call and make a reservation in advance otherwise you will be disappointed. Everything that we have ordered arrived very fast and it was fresh and tasty 😋. They served a small bottle of “tsikudia” which is a traditional high alcohol liquor as a starter for free plus some “meze” - olives, cucumbers and snack to make you feel welcome.

Very good and local. Need a car or taxi or a 25 mins walk from Platanias to get there. Food is excellent and prices regular. Lesser than some Platanias restaurants. Recommended.
A K — Google review
Very beautiful place. The restaurant was little farther from the main street but it was worth the visit. The plave was surrounded with orange- and citrus trees and the green trees looked beautiful. The staff was friendly and the service was good. The list had many vegetarian options to choose from. We chose to go in a day that was hot and really windy so I think the place would have been even better at night with all of the lights hanging from the trees or maybe on a day that would have had better weather. The place was overall stunning and the food was good. There were room to eat both inside and outside and there were different sized tables for parties of all size. The trees and the near by water created a really relaxed atmosphere to spend time with people and the trees casted a shaddow so the sun wasn't burning so brightly. I would recommend this place.
