Shopping mall
Shopping
Middleton Grange Shopping Centre is a delightful gem nestled in the heart of Hartlepool, offering an impressive array of shopping options all under one roof. This vibrant mall features popular retailers like Primark and 3, alongside charming charity shops and fast food outlets. One of its standout features is the seamless access to various streets in Hartlepool, allowing visitors to explore beyond just Victoria Road.
Absolutely love this shopping centre, and in my favourite of places, Hartlepool. Watch out for the traffic wardens giving tickets out, really unnecessary behaviour off them. A local guide on the carpark ( Crackasaurus) is a lovely fella, filled me in with local issues, and really brightened my day up.
Matthew I — Google review
It's just 'okay'. There's not an awful lot of shops to browse. It feels a little lacking. There's a lot of empty units as well. Maybe if the rents were lower, you'd attract some stores and have some income from them rather than them sitting vacant. It's not bad for a little rummage, though. Overall, it's okay.
William W — Google review
There are lots of empty plots where shops used to be thriving. Has a dirty feel to it once inside. Car park is awful, and what's worse is the local council charges you to park, and the minimum is a pound - which is scandalous. The car park is also dirty and smells. EDIT HBC - Charging disabled people to park is an absolute disgrace. As photographed, HBC will now charge for disabled parking.
Claire — Google review
My local shopping centre. Needs serious improvement. The wing where wilko and post office used to be up to the entertainer shop is supposed to be getting demolished soon, boyes are supposed to be moving in where H&M used to be soon. The old indoor market and all the stores where the old 'what everyone wants' store used to be needs redeveloping. Some of them units have been empty and abandoned for over 20 years. That part of the shopping centre needs bulldozing and rebuilt as someting modern rather than leaving it to rot. There are worse town centres nearby and its not a bad little shopping centre but it needs desperate improvement before more retailers move out and definately needs more food options than junk such as mcdonalds, greggs ect. Its also shortsighted that one of the lifts in the centre is broken down all the time. I look after someone who is wheelchair/mobility scooter bound so surely this should be addressed properly.
Chris A — Google review
Good central town shopping location with a good selection of shops and eateries. Pleasant atmosphere and well kept.
Daniel D — Google review
The shopping centre is tenanted primary by discount retailers including B&M, Home Bargains, Primark and TJ Hughes. This in itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but unfortunately - unlike most shopping malls - it is subject to council parking charges.
Matthew A — Google review
Spacious shopping mall with most popular and less popular stores. Bank/ATM available, escalator available for getting to the top floor

Good clean environment could do with more shops a bit of a ghost town now remember the days that town centre was booming

Home goods store

Countertop store
Chain retailer of bedding, curtains & soft furnishings, plus kitchen equipment & home goods.
Dunelm have a good range of products to suit every need and budget. The staff are extremely welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. Everything I've bought has been off a decent quality, from bedding to cups to cleaning brushes. If I were looking for any household items I would at least check at Dunelm first. They have regular sales / discounts so it's not unusual to be able to pick up a great bargain. I've had everything from serving dishes to slippers at such steep discounts that it almost felt like stealing. There's also a lovely little cafe on the top floor run by Pausa which is very popular with local residents which is reasonably competitive with it's prices. The staff are incredibly friendly and will bend over backwards to accommodate any requests.
Matthew A — Google review
Items didn't ring through at marked price. Assistant very curt when I pointed it out. Needs to learn good customer service behaviour.
Paul B — Google review
This review is for Wayne. What a treasure. He was working in the curtain department when I asked for help with an item I couldn't find. He found it. But there was only 1 pack. I needed two. He checked the stock, asked another member of staff where it would be in the warehouse. Went and got it. Fast, really polite. Didn't make it seem like I was asking for the world like alot of staff do when they need to go look in the back. Didn't fob me off. Simply an all round lovely guy! Its a shame guys like him dont get more appreciation for their customers service and the 5* attitude they respesent the company with every day. Thankyou Wayne!

Lidl

Supermarket
Discount supermarket
Lidl is a well-known supermarket chain in the United Kingdom, offering affordable prices, especially for groceries. Currently, they are having Easter sales and clearance, making it a great time to shop for more with less money. The store has short queues and courteous staff. Additionally, there is ample car parking and the store is reasonably clean. While sometimes they may run low on stock due to high demand, the staff are generally nice and there's security available at various times.
Clean, tidy store. Staff are always busy, but usually still friendly.
Lucy — Google review
Very disappointing experience. After a long, busy day at work, I stopped at Lidl for some food shopping.I have been a loyal Lidl customer for many years, but my experience today at this store was unacceptable. I value a quick but courteous shopping trip. Instead, I was met with rudeness and impatience from the female assistant at the till. She didn’t greet me, rushed me before I’d even finished unloading my shopping, scanned everything at speed, and told me to “throw everything into the basket.” She never asked if I had a Lidl Plus card and didn’t offer me a receipt. The whole interaction was stressful, unfriendly, and unprofessional. After years of loyalty I felt totally unappreciated. If this is how regular customers are treated, I will take my business elsewhere. Luckily there are many better alternatives in the area. I hope Lidl takes this feedback seriously and addresses the poor customer service at this store.
Victoria S — Google review
Over the past year the service at the checkouts has got slower and slower. More often than not you’re stuck in a queue for a while. They really need to get some self service checkouts like Aldi.
Lewis A — Google review
Terrible attitude to disabled people my partner who's disabled needed water 12 bottles which are heavy there was nobody there to help here lift them so she had to struggle giving her excruciating pain then when she went to the till they said you'll have to lift them up to be scanned she explained she couldn't as she was in to much pain but the till cashier argued saying you'll just have to! The leads on the scanners can teach into the trolleys and she even if they didn't could have helped her! Awful situation and attitude from the staff things in this world need to change I'll be speaking too head office and the manager of the store tomorrow very angry
Steven H — Google review
My experience and findings in this store were mixed. On the plus side there is a considerable range of what might be called exotica. These are the food items from the continent. There is an impressive array of products from France and Germany in particular. Perhaps because of the lead-up to Halloween there was a huge range of sweet treats. These went beyond the ordinary fare but were classy and not just made for Halloween. So perhaps many of these products are regulars. The fresh produce was not too bad but nothing special. Prices seemed moderate to competitive. The avocados were low-priced but were quite small, so they needed to be cheap or would still have poor value. The range of wines was a little different from other Hartlepool outlets. There was some quite cheap wine but it was corked! Who still does that? I did find some olives and a couple of French cheeses to buy. It was good to find some unpasteurized cheese. I have marked down the rating as I found the staff a bit disappointing. Staff in similar stores throughout Hartlepool are wonderful but at Lidl they lacked something. The check out operator was grumpy and made a fool of herself putting on a fake interaction of hello and goodbye.

My goto Store, for the German products I really enjoy. Easy to reach by Bus and Car.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool is a captivating quayside destination that transports visitors back to the era of Admiral Nelson. This engaging museum features costumed guides and allows guests to explore the historic 1817 warship, Trincomalee, at their leisure. Even if you arrive later in the day, there's plenty to see and do!
It was an interesting weekend trip. Very convenient free parking near the museum. The entrance ticket for an adult cost 16 pounds, but this is not a big price for such an interesting museum. From the first steps we got into the atmosphere of life near the old pier several hundred years ago. The opportunity to get on board the frigate, go down to the lower decks - it was exciting and interesting. Many interesting locations for children. There is a nice cafe and toilets, as well as a souvenir shop.
Olha H — Google review
We had a great day here with the boys aged 9 & 12. They enjoyed the weapons talk and the fighting ships experience. The 9 year old is also young enough to have enjoyed the play area and the additional games set out quoits and bowls were fun. The only negative I would add would be some of the displays in the buildings were a bit tired and dimly lit and the wording was too high up to read easily. The ship is very interesting and the whole quay area gives a good overall impression. If you could get some investment this has potental to be 5 star. There is a cafe which we didn’t use as we’d brought a picnic which you are welcome to do. There is seating available. Overall for the price on an annual ticket£34 for 2+2 it’s good value compared to many other attractions and free parking an added bonus.
Linda C — Google review
Small but quite interesting place. None of the buildings were real which was quite disappointing. Good displays and lots of information. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. Free parking, gift shop and cafe on site. Buy tickets online they are a little bit cheaper.
Liz — Google review
The museum is ok, it is looking tried in places I.e information plaques torn or items missing. The centre piece being the naval ship is very good however I would have liked more information around the ship to bring the different parts of it to life. We were warmly welcomed onboard but about from that limited in info to read or a talk through would have been fantastic even an audio app to listen too would have been welcome. The weapons talk and the firing of the cannon was good along with the hands on bit at the end. The quayside is well maintained and there is information within some of the buildings. I do get that one ticket gets entry all year however not enough for us to make another trip I feel. Comfortable visited within a morning or afternoon

Family visit to the Royal Navy Museum, took our 12 and 9 year old boys, it's full of information, things to see and Interact with, you can hop on board and explore the HMS Trincomalee to see what it was like, it has an onsite cafe, play park and gift shop. It was a great visit and you can return for the next year for free with a valid ticket.
Melissa — Google review
Liked it so much we went back the next day, free of course, any number of visits allowed in a year from ticket purchase. The various demonstrations were also worth seeing.
Christopher R — Google review
Had a great visit today. Lots to look at this museum. Had everything from interactive displays all the way to going onto the actual ship. Only bad point that would make even Captain Pugwash sad are Some of the displays lighting was really poor or not working. Couldn’t see some of the displays as was too dark.
Tut Y — Google review
Never been here before, but thoroughly enjoyed our visit here - it was good to be able to look all over the ship, at the various decks and areas the crew lived and worked in. As the tickets last for 1 year from date of purchase, we may well return in the spring / summer.

Outdoor Activities
Seaton Carew Beach is a popular destination on the North Sea coast, attracting bathers and families during the summer season. The vast expanse of sand revealed at low tide makes it a favorite spot for visitors in winter. The area offers amenities such as fish and chip shops, ice cream parlors, arcades, and a shop for beach essentials. Parking can be limited during peak times, so arriving early is recommended. Lifeguards are present for added safety.
A nice place for relaxation for summer where people can go with family band friends to catch fun and unwind I love the section for children where there are several games that can amuse the children and give them pleasant memories I also love the hotels and lounges close to the beach which makes it attractive to tourists
GeeTee S — Google review
Absolutely stunning beach front, in winter or summer. The beach front is flat and extremely clean and well kept, so it's perfect for a lovely walk. Be prepared for winds though! You can see the beautiful headland and take stunning photos on a clear day. It can get busy in summer, with tourists and sun worshippers but there is plenty of sand and beach to share; it could never get too busy! Well worth a visit. Unfortunately to one side there is a bit of an eyesore - however it doesn't take away how beautiful the beach and ocean are. A must see.
Claire — Google review
Be careful with the wasps at the plastic clearing bins right before the beach wall and entrance. Next to the lifeguard building. Great beach, busy and tricky to park if you get there after 11am. Good idea to have bags provided for collecting rubbish. But a plastic free option would be better. Quite a walk from the nearest car park to the sea when the tide is out.
Beereed — Google review
Plenty of parking, dog beach not far. Always a great day out.
Nnamdi A — Google review
One of the best beaches I have ever been on, felt like miles of sand to walk along. Cheap parking fees, £1.00 for two hours or £2.00 for four hours. There is a lovely little park on the front for the kids with a small water park, plenty of seating to watch the kids enjoy themselves. Hidden gem, a must visit, dependant on the weather. Take a walk over to the town, very reasonable priced ice creams and two very good arcades to keep the kids happy.
Steven T — Google review
Great beach to visit with the family. Expect to queue up for fish and chips and ice-cream as they get really busy
Jonathan — Google review
Great beach for a nice walk with the family and dogs. There is a lot of shells and stones on the beach for the kids to find and collect. There are a lot of bins for rubbish and dog waste so everything was kept pretty clean. The was plenty of parking next to the beach and it is free when out of season.

Mediterranean restaurant
Portofino is a split-level eatery with stunning marina views, offering a varied menu and decor influenced by North African and Mediterranean styles. On a visit without a reservation, the requirement of a deposit seemed unnecessary to some. However, they were seated at an appealing table and found the menu to have plenty of options. One friend experienced delays in receiving her drink but quickly resolved the issue with another staff member. The food itself was described as absolutely delicious, with generous portions and a lovely atmosphere.
Didn't book a table. We just turned up around 6.45pm. They just told us to sit for a few minutes whilst they cleaned a table for us. The restraunt itself is very well lit and beautiful with all the fairy lights, the lovely hanging ivy and the balconies it's easy on the eyes. It's also very colourful and has a lot of little quirky things you'll notice. The food was amazing, and i will definitely be returning and also recommending this bistro. Before our starters came, they brought us a bowl of fresh bread with butter. You could tell it was freshly made. First, we ordered 2 starters, the chicken stripes and garlic mushrooms. My partner liked the fact that the garlic mushrooms were cooked in garlic instead of just stuffed and said they were the best she's ever eaten. The chicken stripes were amazing with panko breadcrumbs. I ordered the hot shot parmesan with chips, the parmesan was nice, the chicken tender, and the breadcrumbs were tasty. The chips were among some of the best I've eaten well cooked and crispy but yet soft on the inside. My partner ordered the slow-cookrd beef in red wine with root vegetables. She said the beef was melt in your mouth tender - however, there were 2 small pieces that were a little fatty, The mash was perfect👌. The vegetables were delicious, and it was also served with roasties, which she said was unneeded as she had mash but said they were perfect crispy outside and fluffy inside. Considering all the food we ordered and a pint each, we were pleasantly surprised with the price we did go during the happy hour promotion, though.

Visited here at the weekend. The place was packed out, nice atmosphere. Took a while to get some drinks but afterwards the service was rapid. Young lady took our order (half of which was vegan), then a different lady brought out complimentary bread and butter (with vegan butter too) which means that our table had a vegan patreon had been communicated elsewhere which is excellent. Starters - vegan garlic bread with cheese 5/5. Best vegan cheese GB I’ve had, vegan cheese is not easy to melt and this was done superbly Pork belly and black pudding - 5/5 absolutely delicious, the cauliflower puree was an excellent addition Mains - lasagne 4/5 - a good solid size lasagne, very tasty Vegan pesto pasta - 4/5 again lovely, huge portion. Sides - chips - 4/5 good solid homemade style chips All with a glass of Prosecco all came to less than £50. Very good value and would definitely recommend

This was my first visit to this restaurant, and to be honest, I’m not sure I’d return. The atmosphere was pleasant, and it got busy quite quickly — we arrived at 5 PM and were seated right away. The staff were friendly, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet my expectations. I chose not to mention it to the staff at the time, as they were polite and I wondered if I was just being particular. The starters and our first round of drinks arrived promptly. I have no complaints about the squid rings — they were very good. However, I ordered the seafood risotto, expecting a mix of seafood, not just prawns and haddock. I opted to remove the haddock, assuming there would be other seafood included, but that wasn’t the case. What I received was a fairly basic risotto with small prawns, which felt underwhelming — especially given the additional £3 charge on the happy hour menu. Considering the prawns weren’t king prawns and I removed the haddock, the extra cost or the cost i general didn’t seem justified in comparison to other similar restaurants. The risotto itself was too cheesy for my taste, and surprisingly, there wasn’t any parmesan added on top — just the cheesy flavour mixed into the dish. I was also a bit disappointed that no one checked on us during the meal or asked if we needed anything else, like drinks or sauces. I had to flag someone down to request these. I understand it was busy, but a quick check-in during the meal seems like basic service. One final point: I noticed the prices listed online didn’t match the prices in the restaurant. It might be worth updating this so customers know what to expect before they arrive.
Courtney K — Google review
Friendly staff, greeted with a smile. Lucky that I booked because the restaurant was packed. After having my meal there, I can see why. The basket of bread was lovely, fresh, thick, light and warm, wholemeal and white. I had the Texas BBQ Parmo with peperoni and bacon, I've had a few Parmo's around the area and this was by far the best. I actually used the word PHENOMENAL when I was asked how it was when I paid the bill.

Fabulous restaurant & food. The service we received was very good considering there was a large group of people in. The food came out hot & tasted excellent. The prices were excellent for the quality of food. Portofino comes highly recommended.

Lovely little spot with great atmosphere. Unfortunately we thought the food was substandard compared to other similar restaurants in Hartlepool based on value for money. The staff are friendly and work hard. Would definitely try again in the future.
Nathan R — Google review
Went for a Christmas meal with colleagues and was treated to an excellent feast. Starter was a very generous helping of potato skins with choice of dipping sauce, but the other starters I saw made we want to try them too. Garlic mushrooms looked amazing as did the chicken goujons. I went for traditional Christmas dinner and wasn't disappointed. It was piping hot, delicious and very filling and I would have no problem having the same again and recommending it wholly. Having said that the steak and chips my colleague had also looked amazing so I would be tempted to try that on my next visit ... And there will be a next visit as the food was excellent. Service was outstanding as the servers took our names and ensured we all got the correct meals and kept us supplied with drinks throughout. As the food was so delicious and filling none of us could face a sweet so I can't comment on those, but based on everything else I would definitely be happy to try one if I could manage to save a bit of room for it. The only downside was I got Whammageddoned during my meal ... But as I'm in a happy Christmas mood I won't knock a star off for that. 😉 Plenty of parking outside and not too far from the Centre of Hartlepool if you fancy a short walk. The only downside I could see (for some) would be the access via a fairly steep metal exterior staircase. This wasn't a problem for me but it may limit others ability to get inside.

Been here lots of times but not so much recently. Love the fact that they have a more extensive Sunday menu than just the Sunday lunch or limited Sunday menu that many pubs use. The food is always gorgeous and the ambiance is wonderful.

Food, disgusting! Didn't eat it, wasn't risking it. Neither did my son or partner. Was disgusted with the kids meal served to him, he's not a dog! Service I've never experienced anyone working somewhere so miserable and rude. They look about 12 and act about 12. Giving us dirty looks and slamming the food on the table. Atmosphere so dim and dark and depressing ooooow just absolutely horrendous never again.
Toni A — Google review
Went to the galleries for the first time in 3 years, food was shocking. Jacket potatoe was tiny, sprinkle of cheese, teaspoon of coleslaw, and small bit of salad looked terrible. The lady brought our food and would not come near the table with it because of my guide dog. Spent 17 pound to be embarrassed and have disgusting food.
Julie G — Google review
Absolutely disgusting - if you were only paying £2/£3 for the items fair enough. Corned beef toastie had 3 small pieces of corned beef and 2 onions per slice. 10 chips on the side (for £1.99!) and I’ve got no idea what the coleslaw was but it was so watery and smelt off. £5 for a kids picnic box with 2 pieces of stale bread, tuna swimming in salad cream or watered down mayo - both of my under 5s turned their nose up, a packet of pom bears and a multipack mini animal snack biscuit. Absolutely disgusting. Toilet seats hanging off and no locks. Place needs closing down awful.

Myself, my mam and my sister popped in this past Monday to see what the food was like nowadays as we hadn’t visited in over 10 years. What we were served with was a massive disappointment and was pretty much inedible. I ordered the sandwich platter which was around £6 for 2 slices of stale dry bread which tasted and felt like it had been out of the packet for days, supermarket ham and some basic ready salted crisps on the side and the odd leaf. Absolutely shocking to charge over £2/3 for that when I could have got more and a nicer meal from a Tesco meal deal. My families orders were shocking too and were barely touched. It’s safe to say we won’t be visiting again. It’s extremely sad to see what has happened to this place and needs taking over by new chefs and management immediately. The place also looks like it hasn’t been touched in over 20 years which is nice if you’re going for the retro look but at least clean your cafe.
Dalya P — Google review
If I could give this a 0 I would. Terrible cheap food. Definitely not worth the prices they’re asking. It’s ok to go here if you don’t have taste buds. This place has not been renovated or updated in decades. It’s unclean and has no feel to it. Do I need to say anything else? AVOID.

Awful, first time we had been in for a while due to shut down. Ordered two breakfasts, food smelled, and tasted like it had been fried in old stale oil. Small milk jug was coated in yellow crud. Food spilled on floor and not cleaned up. £18.00 wasted Never again, used to be a great place to eat, never again, left food uneaten and we walked out. Place has gone right down the nick.

Went there twice the first time one of our meals didn't even turn up the food was cold and unappetizing there was no flavour at all. The second time the bread bun wasn't buttered, the dumplings were greasy and the toastie was burnt. Do not recommend going here at all.

Fish and chips takeaway
If you're on the hunt for a delightful Fish and Chip experience, look no further than The Almighty Cod. Nestled in a bustling area, this gem has long been known for its mouthwatering offerings. On my recent visit, I was thrilled to find no queue—a rarity! I ordered the classic fish and chips with mushy peas, and it was worth every penny. The generous portion featured a beautifully cooked piece of cod atop a bed of vibrant mushy peas, all resting on crispy chips.
Set out for some fresh air and a Fish and Chip lunch. There were three to choose from in the vicinity but opted for the ‘Almighty Cod’, well actually we went into the ‘Hidden Tap’ as we could get Almighty Cod food within the Hidden Tap. Service very friendly and when the food came we were pleasantly surprised. The food was cooked to a high quality and generous portions, at really good price. Very rarely am I beaten by a portion of fish and chips, but it was a close run thing. Would highly recommend a visit.

First time i have tried here. Great portion size but a little too greasy, maybe just a one off... Curry sauce was lovely and would have that again. Wasn't busy so didn't need to wait long. Service was great and would definitely give them another try.

I have finally visited the Almighty Cod today, as there was no queue, for years there has always been a long queue. I ordered fish chips and mushy peas with a can of Coke Zero, totalling £16.00p my most expensive fish and chips ever. The proof would be in the tasting, there was a large piece of Cod resting on a bed of Mushy Peas covering a tray of Chips. I found an empty bench on the promenade and began the tasting. The batter was crispy and the fish was piping hot flaky and very tasty. The Mushy Peas or Yorkshire Caviar? were slightly missing something which I eventually twigged on the road back to home and that was a hint of vinegar. Since the pandemic lots of fish and chip shops still place the condiments on the food, which is usually different to how I prefer them. I would have ensured that my chips and mushy peas were coated in salt and vinegar. Gripe over. The chips were piping hot and not greasy, the portion was so large that a small amount was wasted and I placed the remnants in a waste bin on the promenade, which were full to the brim. I wasn’t pestered by a single sea gull for food, though a solitary pigeon approached me and was ignored and it moved on. A tasty portion of fish and chips, but losing a star because I wasn’t allowed to place my own salt and vinegar on the meal. My portion was enough to feed two people in the real world. So if you split the lid from the carton, you can use that to split the food up amongst a couple of people.

Fantastic seaside restaurant, very warm welcome with friendly professional and helpful service from the attentive staff. Good choices of food and drink, the traditional fish and chips matched the quality of service - very good portions and amazing quality !! With all the trimmings you could hope for. Lovely venue , comfortable, spotlessly clean and some great drinks - immaculate toilets too which is a rare thing these days Thanks for a great experience, My 88 yr old mum, my sister and I all thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend

First time fish was excellent & massive but chips were slightly under cooked but they were so busy, however don't rush if you had waited a few more minutes would of been better, overall 8.2 out of 10 but fish was the star of the show without doubt 😋

Always bought from here but this time were absolutely awful for £27.40 they were only fit for the bin. Two cod & chips and a curry sauce will never go back and will never recommend

Portion size is great, the fish was too big for the tray. Curry sauce was spot on, really thick and good flavour. Only down side for me was the battery was abit over done, I prefer light gold in color and this was more like a dark brown and hard.

Fish and chips takeaway
Fast food restaurant
Nestled on Duke Street in Hartlepool, The Odd Cod is a beloved takeaway that has stood the test of time. Known for its generous portion sizes, this charming spot serves up thick fish fillets and hearty cheese patties alongside large fritters. Diners are often pleasantly surprised by the substantial fish sandwiches nestled between two slices of potato, all without the greasiness that can sometimes accompany fried fare.
God chippy reminds you of the old style family chippy. Good old fashioned fish and chips no kebab or pizza there. Highly recommend

Had lunch from this long established take away on Duke Street, Hartlepool. The portion sizes were good, with thick fish, decent cheese patties and large fritters. A pleasant surprise was the size of the fish sandwiched between two large slices of potato. Another bonus was that the food was not greasy.
