Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Chirk Castle, a remarkable National Trust property, offers a blend of medieval stronghold and 18th-century grandeur. The estate features well-marked woodland trails for leisurely walks, including dog-friendly paths. Visitors can catch glimpses of the 13th-century castle while enjoying the picturesque surroundings. Additionally, the property boasts lavish interiors and an eclectic collection spanning over 700 years of history. Notably, it is the last castle from its era still inhabited today.
We were on our way north and stopped here for a lunch break and a walk on the castles estate. There's a good sized parking lot, even with some spaces providing a bit of shade from the trees. Great for a hot summer day (like it was on our visit). We traveled with our Bulldog, so we just came to enjoy the castle from the outside and to have a walk around the estates parkland. Staff we've met were all very friendly and welcoming. It was built in 1295 as part of Edward I's chain of fortresses across the north of Wales. It was later on demolished in the English Civil War, but then rebuilt. Since 1981 it belongs to the National Trust. And it's a beautiful castle. It's really in a fantastic condition and the land and park surrounding it are well taken care of. There are some small trails around the the meadow and castle and some longer trails to enjoy a bit more of the parkland. Some tables and benches in front of the castle to enjoy a picnic with these wonderful views all around. For another time it's surely worth a re-visit to see the gardens and the inside. It's just really a wonderful place to see and to be. We really enjoyed it.

A proper castle right on the Welsh border with Shropshire. The castle dates from the C 13th but much of the told history dates from the time that the Middleton family moved into the castle in the C 16th. This was during a period of great upheaval of the UK monarchy and government. Most men at the time seemed to be at daily risk of losing g their heads (quite literally) for a misplaced loyalty. The gardens though are the crown jewels of this property, and we were fortunate to visit on a day of good weather.
Gerard — Google review
Not too busy, which made it really enjoyable to explore. The staff were very nice and welcoming. The gardens are beautiful and it’s great that you can take pictures inside the castle too. There are lots of lovely walking paths around, a perfect place for a peaceful day out. It's also a dog friendly too.
Anastasia M — Google review
Lovely 800 year old castle, with stately rooms, an (empty) dungeon, and stunning peaceful grounds. We spent about 25 minutes inside the castle’s 10-12 rooms, 15 minutes in Adam’s tower seeing the empty dungeon and upper rooms (note: uneven steps), and additional time on the grounds. The house has booklets with info in some rooms, along with great volunteers. Nice lunchtime cafe, with some veg options. There is indoor and outdoor seating, though would suggest following the signs to the additional indoor seating as it points you to the tower seating - which has lovely views from the windows and private nooks to eat. Very peaceful property. Used bookstore and shop at the front also worth a stop.
Becky T — Google review
This place makes for a great day out. It’s a nice drive, a stunning castle and the views out over various counties from the bottom of the garden are amazing. The garden was slightly disappointing. Those borders could be amazing, and should be at this time of year. There is too much bare soil and some of the plants need replacing or rethinking but there are pockets of delight. I’ve felt this year, having visited a number of these historic gardens, that the NT is putting lots of effort into the properties but the gardens can appear a little neglected. Nevertheless, a thoroughly lovely place.
Martin N — Google review
The castle changed hands many times in its centuries so any personal history has been glossed over, but certain parts such as Adam's Tower and the dungeon have been well preserved and are educational as well as a cool experience! The grounds are absolutely stunning in any season, which is intentional, and we had a fun day trip to explore the grounds and buildings.
Seriously S — Google review
Beautiful place with stunning views. Most areas of the garden are accessible, the forest area has uneven paths and a pushchair might struggle a bit, not impossible tho ☺️ Great place to run the kids, just be aware of the drop at the end of the garden, it might come as a surprise to some ☺️
Jemimah G — Google review
Taking advantage of the dogs passport promo with NT we popped up to Chirk Castle for a misty Sunday walk. The gardens and woods were lovely even in the dreary light of a grey day and the castle looks incredibly well preserved despite its age. They sell great mocha coffees and the obligatory pasty that my husband really likes. Sadly they've lost a star for us because despite the vastness of the grounds there were no designated off lead areas for dogs. The two staff in the ticket office were very friendly and polite ☺️

I cannot recommend this place enough! I visited here as part of a holiday trip to Shropshire, and this lovely place had everything my sausage dog needed. We picked up a really nice selection of natural treats, a kong toy, multi-vitamin gummies and some cream for his skin. The manager Steve was really kind to offer up advice on a lot of the products, so we felt in good hands. I wish we lived locally and this would definitely be our go-to shop! Will be sure to visit again, when we are next in the area. Thank you so much x

Needed dog👍🏻 bags for poo, going to Conway and forgot to take some called in here, and wife came out with 2 big mats for the dogs as well. They were happy with them and settled down for the ride. Nice big store will call in on the way by the next time
Ken M — Google review
My regular...... A great selection of animal foods. Staff are trained to give advice on food stuffs or other items such as fitting dog harness or horse tack. Personally I find the hay and straw pricey but buy mine in the inconvenient BIG bales. I've had urgent requirements such as an electric fence and it's associated posts and tape etc and f&p have come up trumps every time and saved the day. All the staff are particularly approachable and Steve the Manager is an expert at the Minor Miracle!

Called in here yesterday for some horse feed. Had my walking stick with me today as my back and leg pain was very bad. Started to read the labels on 2 different bags of Dr.Green chaff to compare ingredients and a kind member of staff came over to help me and also got a trolley snd assisted me with getting my feed. All the staff were so pleasant and helpful and loaded the feed into my car for me. The store was also clean and presentable and items were priced which makes life soooooo much easier.

It's great, the staff are just wonderfully helpful and knowledgeable about your pet or equine needs

Popped in today to have a look at the new pick and mix selection and picked some up for our goldador who has no complaints at our choice! Always a pleasure to be served by Steve who has been on hand whenever needed and always full of advice and recommendations.

Many thanks to Steve at farm & pet for his help to remove a tick from my little dog today, after purchasing the tick remover he demonstrated how to use it. How lovely it was to be helped in this way!!! Keep it up Steve and farm & pet.

Excellent place to buy stuff for your pet. Jenny (retired greyhound) especially likes the resting dog food. They also wash horse blankets and large dog beds which is really handy. Chicken feed and mixed corn is also available. Very helpful staff. Plenty of places to park

Nestled on Gobowen Road in Oswestry, Fantastic Funhouse is an enchanting soft play center housed in a stunning grade two listed building that was once the Cambrian Rail Works. This vibrant venue offers parents a chance to unwind in a well-furnished coffee shop while keeping an eye on their little adventurers navigating through three exciting play frames, an indoor football pitch, and even a garage go-kart track.
This place is massive. Very nicely equipped soft play areas for a wide age range of kids. My toddler loved exploring everything on offer and we had a lovely afternoon overall. Will be visiting again for sure! Food was lovely as well :) thank you.
Weckulz — Google review
Needs a good deep clean throughout the toilets are filthy and this was at 9.30am in the morning before it got busy, food all over carpet and seating areas. We have been once before and it's still the same so this will be our last visit also there is a lingering unpleasant smell about the place. The only thing It's got going for it is It's a big soft play but needs some serious looking after as it looks tatty in places. Also avoid the coffee! I would not recommend.
Hannah H — Google review
Disgusting. Visited on a very quiet Tuesday afternoon, literally 2 other customers in the building, the place was filthy, not safe for children especially with the amount of mouldy food stuck between the mats, holes in the netting, and thick dust everywhere. Toilets were horrid, food areas were dirty, but staff were polite and friendly. Could be improved so easily with cleaning in the soft play structures, a few repairs and a quick hoover.
Emxfmm — Google review
Visited here yesterday and as stated on other reviews filthy place all round I went to change my toddlers nappy and there was poo all over the changing table and Mat before changing my own I had to clean other babies poo up, Also the food and hot drinks where stone cold had to send them back, Would not recommend this play area. Disappointing…
Erik P — Google review
PLEASE BE ADVISED Disappointing Experience – Not Suitable for All Ages as Advertised We visited this play area last weekend expecting it to cater to children aged 0 to 12, as clearly stated. Unfortunately, it fell well short of that expectation. The facilities are inappropriate for the full age range. Overall, the play area seems suited only for children between 0 to 6 years at best. Luckily we don't need to visit this place again, we only ended up there by case - while passing by.
Eugenia ( — Google review
I got a £85 parking fine for parking here even though there were absolutely no signs or communication form staff to instruct drivers they had to register their vehicle.
Robert T — Google review
I got a strange feeling from this place as soon as I entered. It smells damp and musty. The hot drinks and milkshake were disgusting and were left unfinished. The children had a good run around and enjoyed themselves, but not somewhere we will be visiting again
Sarah H — Google review
Large indoor play centre with lots suitable for mixed ages. Entry fee reasonable and free entry for accompanying adults. Good selection of drinks and snacks in the cafe, meals served too but we didn't have one. Large fee car park, but Make sure you enter your car number plate on their system to avoid getting a parking ticket

A wonderful little gift shop with lot's of interesting ideas for souvenirs and gift ideas. Some great local products too.

This is a little shop, smaller than what you usually find in other National Trust places. The staff was friendly. However, like all National Trust shops, it’s highly overpriced. There is a second-hand bookstore in front of the shop, which adds a nice touch to the visit.

During the bustling 6-week school holidays, the market was abuzz with activity. Seeking a delightful dining experience, I opted for the market cafe which came highly recommended for its Sunday roast. The tantalizing menu offered a choice between beef, chicken, or mixed roast accompanied by an array of delectable sides such as mashed potato, roast parsnips, peas carrots stuffing and a generously-sized Yorkshire pudding. The gravy made with cider added an exquisite touch to the overall meal.
Had a great day in the sun watching the chariot races. Live music, bar serving a variety of food. A burger van. Nice, different afternoon, although we probably wouldn't do it again.

Great night out at the raceway tonight. Some fantastic and beautiful horses racing with their extremely brave riders. The night will finish with an end of season fireworks display so get the kids down here!

Car parking is £3 the stalls are full of rubbish you might find the odd stall selling thing you might actually need. Tea coffee and food avalible not the best. Just turn up park up go the car boot and stalls then over to the fair. Rides are abit expensive but where isn’t nower days !
DRIVER C — Google review
For a car boot sale why are we booters stuck as far away from the crowds as possible!!! One and only time for me - poor poor poor.
David A — Google review
Very busy on the market. Which is quite normal for the 6 week school holidays. Decided to have our dinner in the market cafe because there Sunday roast had been highly recommended. The Sunday roast which you could have beef, chicken or mixed roast had Mashed potato, roast potato, roast parsnips, red cabbage cooked in cider, peas carrots stuffing and a good sized Yorkshire pudding. The gravy which I'm guessing they used the used cider was to die for in fact the whole dinner was gorgeous and we're definitely having it again. The price £9.95 for adults, £6.95 for kids.

Route 66 Diner is a pleasant establishment with helpful employees. Customers can enjoy a satisfying meal, and the portion sizes are generous. The service is quick and efficient, ensuring minimal waiting time for food. It comes highly recommended for its delicious dishes and reasonable prices. For those looking to take on a challenge, the quadfather burger challenge is available and has been successfully completed by previous patrons.

Was definitely enticed by the large board advertising ice cream. Unfortunately, when I asked what flavours were on offer, I was told they only sell one flavour and one type of ice cream. The ice cream van parked next to the kiosk had a lot more to choose from. The 2 members of staff were nice enough, even though they didn't seem too happy to be there. A smile and a little enthusiastic energy would have made me forget I was getting big standard ice cream 😏 The only positive is that there are tables and benches outside.
