Historic Sites
Nis Fortress, located in Nis, Serbia, is a well-preserved ancient stone fortress complex that has been repurposed into a park with cafes, shops, and monuments. Originally built by the Ottomans in the 18th century, it stands as one of the best-preserved fortifications in Serbia and even the Balkans. The fortress was constructed over previous remains of Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval forts.
A Timeless Symbol of Niš – A Must Visit! The Niš Fortress is not just a historic monument – it’s the beating heart of the city! Walking through its massive stone gates feels like stepping back in time. The ancient walls, Ottoman architecture, and peaceful inner park create a perfect blend of history and relaxation. Inside, you’ll find hidden gems like old ruins, art galleries, a charming café, and even cultural events happening during the summer. Whether you’re a history lover, photographer, or just out for a walk, the Fortress offers something unique. 💡 Tip: Go around sunset for stunning views and an unforgettable atmosphere. 📍Easy to reach, totally free, and family-friendly! Highly recommended for locals and tourists alike – this fortress tells the story of Niš in the most beautiful way. 🇷🇸🧱✨

Great place to spend a couple of hours and it's free. There are information plaques in Serbian and English located around the site with explanations of what you can see. Definitely worth a visit.

Νιce view near river nisava. The gate is across the bridge. It is a theatre and has coffee and food shops inside the fortress.
ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΣ Κ — Google review
A wonderful and interesting archaeological place. It also contains places to buy beautiful souvenirs, in addition to quiet cafes surrounded by a forest with a beautiful view. It is really a wonderful place to enjoy.
Недал А — Google review
A great place to visit in the city. There are many old things and buildings in the fortress that you should see. At the entrance there is a public toilet that is free, and in front of it a souvenir shop. There are two small trains here for the youngest who want to enjoy a walk through the park in a different way. A large part of the fortress is under deep shadows. The whole place is with lush vegetation and lots of greenery. Here you will see the remains of an old church, a mosque, a lapidarium, visit museums and many other things. In August, one of the most famous music festivals in the region, Nisville, takes place. It is worth visiting.
Spase M — Google review
Good park, with some attractions around. Has a place for coffee, several souvenir shops, and an open stage with events (might be available online, but I'm not sure). There was no entry fee nor ticket required, but it could be only for this visit. It has a miniature locomotive which provides a sightseeing tour, not sure if it is guided. We parked at a public payed parking, but at the end of the work time for Saturday, but we found it a bit difficult for people who do not have a local Sim card. There is an app, but requires an account which we did not bother to make. Nearly there is a bazaar which has WONDERFUL produce at EXTREMELY affordable prices. Those aromas and tastes took me back to my childhood at my grandma's house - just wonderful, highly recommend!!!

King Milan Square is a bustling hub in Nis, surrounded by shops, al fresco cafes, and flowerbeds. The square features the Monument to the Liberators of Niš and serves as a starting point for a walking tour that covers major attractions in the city center. It includes notable landmarks such as Banovina Building, Cair's Fountain, Memorial of Constantine the Great, and The City Hall.
A large, wide and spacious Square that can accommodate a huge number of people, clean.. Plenty of greenery, cafes, boats because the river is there. Shops, boutiques and parks, as well as wonderful monuments.
Anita L — Google review
Quite a vibrant little square lined with a few cafes and grilled food spots. Nice view across the river to the fortress gates. Head south through the shopping precinct to get deeper into town to find the good bars and restaurants.
Alex F — Google review
Great place to sit and relax after visiting the fortress. Nice cafes and eateries around it. The fountain is super at night.
Brett M — Google review
A beautiful square, well-maintained, with fountains, beautiful old architecture of buildings around the square, flowers and a monument to the liberators of the city of Niš. The bad thing is that there is no shade, so if it is too hot or rainy, you have nowhere to hide.

Narodno pozoriste Nis, a historical city in Serbian theater, stands as a cultural haven. It has showcased remarkable talent and energy on stage, particularly in their production of Pergolesi's opera La serva padrona by the Student Cultural Center - SKC Nis. The singers and orchestra delivered an outstanding performance, surpassing many contemporary non-classical orchestras on national television.
Niš is one of the first cities to enter the history of Serbian theater, and Narodno pozorište Niš still is the island of culture in this town. Aleksandar Mihailović and Aleksandar Marinković ... hat down to your ingenious talent and energy on stage.

These five stars are only because of the great play we watch every single time in this theatre. Last time we watched visiting Bitef teatar. Everything else beside play and actors is very disappointing. Seats are terrible, if you are a man higher then 2m you won't be able to sit anywhere especially on the balcony. This historical very important place needs to be renovated as quick as possible.

Very cozy place, with great atmosphere, it gives a real bohemian vibe. Always good repertoire, diverse and high quality shows. Best place to be culturally uplifted, even if you don't have enough time to check out the full experience level of this legendary venue.

The brutalist architecture influence back in the days can really be seen on it. This building not only hold many historical items, but is still being used to this day. I personally really like the style and feel of the building itself. You should come see it if you're even in the city.
Tr0uble — Google review
It's the most beautiful building in the entire city, every single corner of it, all of the ins and outs of the place. Besides its' magnificent architecture, its' purpose is astounding as it is a home to many famous actors and plays. The theatre always has a great repertoire so as to never bore the spectators. All in all, it is definitely worth the visit.

These photos were taken in Niš. First, the Choir "Smilje" (acc to flowers Immortelle or Everlasting) sang at the Fair in Army Officers House. Then some went to have lunch in the famous restaurant "Nišlijska Mehana" - having had excellent grill, and waiters' service, super atmosphere! After that a short walk followed... Passing the Court, National Theatre... We had great time!

Nestled in the heart of Nis, Park Čair spans an impressive 16.4 hectares, making it the second largest park in the city. This vibrant oasis is divided into two distinct areas: one filled with lush greenery and tranquil spaces for relaxation, while the other boasts a variety of sports and recreational facilities. Visitors can enjoy amenities such as swimming pools—both indoor and outdoor—a skating rink, football fields, a fitness center, and even a bowling alley.
It was a very nice park, highly recommend for family and friends as you can have some relaxation time👍👍👍

It’s a nice park with lots of shade, kids playground etc. Don’t know why google maps says it has opening and closing times. There a lots of lovely cafes and restaurants around the vicinity of the park
Karen G — Google review
A calm park to be in, full of joyful kids on sunny weekends. Its trees make perfect shadows on hot days!
Mare D — Google review
Park Čair is located in the very center of Niš, on an area of 16,4 hectares. The second biggest park in Nis. The entire complex of Čair consists of two parts, in one part there is a large green area, while the other part consists of sports and recreational facilities (skating rink, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, football fields, fitness center, bowling center, steam bath...). Just because of its rich vegetation and lush greenery, the Turks gave it the name "Chair", which means garden. It's ideal for children during the day. Plenty of space and many entertaining things for them (trampolines, children's castles, slides, water walking ball/balloon, mini electric cars...). Also a good place for roller skating, running, walking, bike riding, street workout, walking a dog or just relaxing on the bench. For refreshment there are dozens of cafes, taverns around the park. In general a very nice place with lot activities during the day, but also during the night.

David O — Google review
A good place to “escape” for your kids. Excepts one facility to play everything is very very old and locks dangerous
Revnic L — Google review
Ok let be honest, this is the most beautiful and the biggest park in the Niš. You can find here playgrounds for kids, shade for rest, part for workout and restaurants and cafes around for chill. Also there is a sport center Cair, aqua park and football stadium. Early in the morning during spring or summer time is very pleasant to walk or relax in the big shade of the trees.

Peaceful and beautiful city park near city center. There are playgrounds for kids, it's suitable for wheelchair and there is a playground for dogs. Also there is indoor and outdoor swimming pool, bowling alley, indoor ice skating rink and soccer pitch.

Fast food restaurant
McDonald's is a well-established, enduring fast-food franchise renowned for its hamburgers and fries. However, some customers find the prices to be exorbitant compared to their perceived value. In Serbia especially, there are several alternative fast-food options that offer superior quality at a lower cost. With only two self-ordering kiosks available, the capacity may be limited, but during peak hours there appears to be little waiting time.
Usually fresh made - sometimes you wait longer because of it, but that's fine. Pro Tip: order rare items and they'll be always fresh!

Зоки и Нена is a fantastic eatery that serves delicious burgers and operates round the clock. It's perfect for satisfying cravings after a night of partying. This Balkan fast food joint specializes in traditional Pljeskavica burgers, but also offers chicken sandwiches. While it may not be an upscale establishment, it provides affordable yet scrumptious dining options for those on a budget.
Huge quantities. Meat eater's paradise. The ladies working there really don't know one word of English. I got by with my very limited Serbian though - and although rude at first, they were helpful and smiling later on. I don't think I was overcharged at all, contrary to what others have said. Food was veeeeery cheap. Yeah it's a cheap and dirty fast food place. Don't expect food that is very healthy. But if you know what you're signing up for, it's a great place. Would highly recommend, as long as someone in your group can speak a little Serbian.
Yannis R — Google review
Bad food very burnt and rude workers especially the lady on the grill. Would not recommend to eat here. Only the fries were ok. And the other lady working was also nice but would not come again.

Service zero, rude staff. Pretends not to understand when you ask the price, then overcharge
Chuck N — Google review
Bad service, rude staff, over charge, tried to finish burger without fillings. I guess they don’t like foreigners. What a shame. Food was average.
Will — Google review
Avoid if possible! Mediocre taste grilled food, mostly pre-grilled and just reheated on the spot. Only meat options. Avoid minced meat! Eatable and cheap when nothing else is available and you have no alternatives but to die from hunger. Staff is extremely unpolite and rude. Overcharging foreigners!

Very nice burgers and a place that work 24h. Its a good place after all night party to take a good bite. Its a traditional Balkan fast food with a burgers (Pljeskavica). You can also find here chicken sandwiches. its not a fancy place but is a place where you can eat for cheap and good.

food was alright but the women working the grill and cash register were extremely rude and dismissive when i asked for a receipt after being overcharged. we asked for explanations repeatedly - even in serbian - after realizing we were charged much more than the price list would've called for, and they told us to leave and just answered "that's how much it costs" despite the price list clearly stating otherwise. we were charged around 2x what we should have. very very disappointing experience and not a good representation of serbian hospitality

We are delighted to witness women actively working at Grill Kod Lafa, displaying their friendliness and efficiency. The establishment offers a wide variety of meats and appetizers that can be added to their burgers, resulting in a delicious and satisfying roadside dining experience. This restaurant is highly regarded as one of our favorites in Nis, with its consistently delectable food drawing us back time after time. It truly is an amazing place, serving the best grilled specialties in town.
Nish is famous for grill/roshtil. Kod Lafa is a true king of roshtil at honest prices. Oh those gigantic portions of plescavica bursting with flavor on monstrous buns! They put American sized burgers to shame. The only suggestion for improvement is to put some labels on copious sauces/toppings because the women working there don’t speak much English.

Best takeaway I've ever been. Plenty of toppings. If you are a tourist, ask some people in line to explain things to you. It's very busy.

I visited an exceptional Serbian kafana where I enjoyed the ambiance of a traditional Serbian eatery. The establishment was spacious and welcoming, boasting an authentic interior and amicable personnel. The menu presented a broad array of dishes, including numerous offerings from the traditional Serbian cuisine. I sampled multiple plates and found the quality and flavors to be highly satisfying. In particular, I would recommend trying the impeccably cooked pork medallions.
No5 bussy at the time we came. Waiter very helpfull. We orders beef čorbica...something like thicker beef soup with potatoes and vegetable, mostly carrot. Very nice! Than we had geek salad. Was so nice we ordered one more. Mixed gilled meat, chicken breast, chicken sticks, čevapi...everything very nice. As a side dish fries and fried potatoes...nice again..I only can recommend...
Peter B — Google review
I really wanted to love this place. It came highly recommended by a cousin for their karadjordjeva (rolled pork schnitzel with Serbian cheese - kajmak). The positives: quality pork meat. The meat was well prepared. Overall the schnitzel tasted good, a bit heavy on the meat, but well balanced with tar tar sauce. The improvement areas: -It's not a karadjordjeva... There was 0 kajmak, the dough falls apart and to have it over fried with the stale fries oil, not quality you'd expect -the price; it was 200 dinars more than the posted website price. When compared with other high quality restaurants (such as dagi+ for example), many menu items are inflated in price -the fries; for 300 dinars, you would expect for not from frozen (I get the appeal of buying cheap frozen fries in bags, but don't charge so much; and a few more to make it seem like less of a rip off) All in all, good for tourists and those with richer pockets.
Nick B — Google review
We had reserved a table for four, and upon entering the restaurant they couldn't even find our reservation, then they seated us on the second floor in complete darkness and when we asked for the lights to be turned on they brought us a night lamp. Half of our order was missing, and the rest they brought wasn't particularly tasty. The oil in the olive press was spoiled, the service was terrible, we waited a long time for our food. The ashtray was never replaced, I don't recommend it!

Restoran Gusar in Nis is a highly recommended restaurant that serves excellent food at great prices. Visitors are amazed by the quality and taste of the dishes, with huge portions that may be difficult to finish. The service is excellent, and the atmosphere is beautiful, with a stunning view of the river. However, there is room for improvement in terms of the food's taste. The drinks are fantastic, and the wait staff are patient and friendly.
Real nice fancy place with kind server who had great English. We appreciated his help, and love the food. The view to the river is also very beautiful. There was also live music.

The restaurant is located in a beautiful area, it's tidy, and the staff were very kind and understanding. The only negative point for me was that the risotto I ordered wasn't cooked properly – the rice was hard, and the whole dish had a strong vinegar taste. Everything else was very good. Overall, I was satisfied, aside from this small flaw.

Great ambience both on ground floor air-conditioned hall next to the road opposite Nis Fort on the riverside, but specially on the one flight of stairs down to the riverside deck in the open air. Food is fresh and lovely. Menu only in Serbian, therefore Google translate camera option is a must. Sea food is great. Sea bass recommended. Some other mains are also very nice. Chinese style chicken with risotto in a sesame and honey coating was also very good. Tuna Salad and Squid also great. Dessert menu is a bit small and we have it a miss. Nice in Nis..
