Castles
Haapsalu Castle is a partially ruined medieval bishop's castle that offers a variety of attractions, including a museum, church, playground, and viewing platform. Despite its turbulent past, the castle is well-preserved and features an interactive museum with old clocks and medieval armors. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views from the tower and relax at the beautiful terrace cafe. The castle provides an interesting history lesson with examples both inside and outside the museum.
When I last visited the castle, there was no museum. It was a pleasant surprise for me to find a museum. As I understood, it was established in 2019. It is an amazing place for history lovers: valuable findings, interesting exhibitions and an exit to the top of the castle. All this made me want to spend more time in the castle than I had planned. The cherry on the cake was a walk on top of the castle with an amazing view. I definitely recommend to visit the Haapsalu castle and its museum. Just choose the appropriate weather 😉 It is worth walking outside too; the castle is huge. There is cafe and the wardrobe. At the entrance I found a souvenier shop.

This is a large castle ruin still with an extensive exterior wall, an intact tower, and a repaired cathedral which is a very large single nave cathedral. We hadn't intended to visit thinking it was closed, but once inside saw it was open and decided to visit. The castle grounds were free but the tower and cathedral are in a paid museum. The exhibits were fairly simple but hands on and you can test various swords and Armour. My wife and I loved this museum and castle. The cathedral is quite impressive and has a great story inside. A must see in Haapsalu which is a charming little resort town and also worth a visit. This is a top marks from me. Great for kids also. With information simple, effective, and easy to understand. Excellent views over the town and coast from the wall next to the tower.
Nick A — Google review
Great experience visiting the Haapsalu medieval Castle. The restoration is truly remarkable and the necessary modifications for the rehabilitation of a museum inside the castle are superbly arranged. The only black spot are the glass panels with the legends written in white letters, a rather unfortunate choice which makes reading extremely difficult ! George Misoulis, architect restorator of heritage buildings.
Georgios M — Google review
A really nice castle to visit with great views over the city of Haapsalu. My only criticism would be that a lot of the information boards are difficult to read due to the style which has been used throughout the museum.
John P — Google review
Partially preserved medieval bishop's castles ruins with a museum inside and a cathedral connected to the castlw. Definitely worth visiting. Nice views from the castle walls. The castle yard is open without entry fee.

Great place to visit. Very well done renovation. Would go again definitely.
H L — Google review
This Castel is pretty cool! They are on the right track to be sure. You can see it's a work on progress, and so are all museums and historical buildings. Much effort went into curating what is there. The displays are terrific! There are so many great written descriptions of what you're looking at, but they are very hard to read because they are on thick see through glass. The words are in different languages, (awesome!) but they are very hard to read because they are written in white letters and back lit with white light. I got a little dizzy reading all of it having to move around to focus on seeing the letters and words on the glass. I think possibly experimenting with different back loght might solve this. Othe areas on the grounds need to be updated and fixed. There were stairs in disrepair that went up a stone tower overlook. There was a wooden step that was actually broken. Kinda sketchy. Hopefully they can continue to make repairs and updates and get some investors to see the value of this special pleace and invest.
Bart F — Google review
Was impressed with the quality, ingenuity and planning that went into making this an historical museum that you will want to visit. It is reasonably priced and filled with historical references without overdoing it. Upon entry there is a starting point that lets you go at your own pace. The route is clearly marked with several options to stop and play/interact with items in the environment and to take fun photos. There is also an opportunity to explore the courtyard by climbing the structural stairs that have been added as well as the completely restored attached cathedral. I traveled solo from Tallinn, then walked to get here and was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and highly recommend it to others.

Restaurant
Kärme Küülik is a charming Italian-inspired restaurant located in the old town of Haapsalu. The menu boasts grilled meats, including rabbit cooked with care, wood-fired pizzas, and hand-made pasta. The wine cellar offers a rich selection while the beer is always served cold. Guests can enjoy outdoor seating with a view of the streets and shops. The service is polite but may seem a bit awkward as guests are seated after being asked about their group size at the front gate.
Nice dinner at Kärme Küülik Restoran Carpaccio, pizza & goat cheese w potatoes On top Creme Brulee All very good, specially pizza was superb! Will return (Pet friendly 😎)

Lamb & pickled onion "pie" (pizza) was QUITE tasty and satisfying after a day of exploring western Estonia. Pizzas were large and more than enough for one person. Outdoor tables in front were quaint, with a nice view of the streets and shops. Service was polite, though a bit awkward. Guests stand at the front gate/fence while the host asks the size of their group and finds them a seat. Overall a very good experience, an we would go again.

We ordered vegetarian pizza, alcoholic and non alcoholic gloggi and vegetarian spicy snack. All was delicious and the service was very good as well. The ambiance was amazing.

Their grilled octopus was one of the best dishes that I had on a recent Estonia trip! We came for lunch on a quiet midweek afternoon and enjoyed the relaxed vibe, food, wine, and outdoor seating. Would highly recommend!

Unfortunately the expectation didn’t meet the reality. Rabbit ravioli was a big disappointment. Seafood pizza was too wet and few muscles weren’t even open. Friend’s pizza was served 15min after my ravioli, not all the same time. Fortunately they gave us a bit of discount after we complained.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the charming town of Haapsalu, Estonia, the Railway and Communications Museum offers a captivating journey through the country's railway history. Housed within an old railway station, this transport museum showcases a remarkable collection of vintage locomotives, carriages, and other railway artifacts. Visitors can explore the exhibits that chronicle Estonia's rail heritage in a chronological order. The museum also features a traditional ticket office, platforms, tracks with locomotives for an immersive experience.
Great experience. Interesting exhibition on phones and radios as well as the railway station and trains. Well presented information and friendly staff including the young man on the counter who went above and beyond in his helpfulness.
Peter M — Google review
This is a free to view collection of old trains which was very impressive. There are information boards (in English) on each of the locomotives telling to story behind each train. Would definitely recommend to anyone with an interest in trains!
John P — Google review
The communication museum contains an eclectic collection of phones, radios, gramophones and TVs from different eras. The railway museum exhibits photographs and miscellaneous railway paraphernalia. Outside, on the rails of the former train station, there’s a collection of older locomotives and wagons. Sadly, most of them are in a pretty deplorable state (very rusty, partly disintegrated and some vandalised). The entry is 5€ for both museums; the outdoor area as well as the platform and parts of the building can be accessed for free. Be aware that most description texts are only in Estonian.
Benjamin B — Google review
Very interesting museum! I was welcomed today by a very friendly lady, and had a very nice talk with her, even with my bad estonian.. Although we had a bit of a language barrier, I am thankful that she tried her best to make my visit pleasant, and that I receive good informations. If she ever reads this comment, I just want to say, suur tänu! Greetings from Šveits :)
Kiirimaa — Google review
Great if you're into trains. Some very decent locomotives, but actually the wooden train station itself is a piece of beautiful architecture. The trains look especially beautiful in the evening/sunset light. Pity that they are not covered and therefore are exposed to rain. Would say one of the highlights of Haapsalu.
Igors K — Google review
Interesting place to visit it with your family, to show your kids some old artifacts and explain how it worked in our childhood. It is not expansive, so come and spend some time here.
Igors J — Google review
Not for me ,no english translation.the museum is two tiny closet rooms basically and 6 euros per person. The trains are outside and free to view. Not worth a visit for a foreigner. Cannot enter trains either so what's the point even. Total disappointment and depression.
Alicia T — Google review
This is an fantastic historic building that served as the main railway station in Haapsalu. Construction started in May 1904 of the main wooden building, with limited train service starting in December 1904. The railway station has several buildings: the passenger terminal, a train control pavilion, a terrace with roof and a covered platform with a total length of 216 metres. It was designed by architect Karl Verheim and engineer V. Vestfalen, with final construction taking place during 1905–1907. Today is serves as a train and communication museum. Trains are not in the best condition.

Pizza Grande

Pizza restaurant
The flavor of the pizza at Pizza Grande was pleasantly unexpected, proving to be enjoyable. Unlike many pizzerias, their crusts did not turn out dry and uneaten; rather, they were nicely crisp and filled with delicious cheese. The staff members were friendly and provided assistance when needed, despite it being the off season. However, there was a notable issue with the restroom that requires attention for repairs.
I would like to warn original Italian pizza lovers, this is not a right place for you. I like thick modern pizzas, that's why I enjoyed huge topping with a lot of cheese, salami, ham and many many things on it. Each pizza is a surprise for you. This is not a gourmet restaurant with superb service, no, this is just small nice street pizza place, where you can get nice thick high nutritious pizza with some soda drink for a very good price. This place not bad like people writing in negative comments, just don't wait from it too much.
Igors J — Google review
It was a nice pizza - nothing special, but it was average and good. Orders were taken inside from the desk. There's a really lovely and cosy inner yard, take your seats there!
Laura A — Google review
Pizzas have no character, there is just so many ingredients on top, that stomach is filled quickly, but taste buds are left confused. Service is nice and quick. Memorable experience but not in the best way.
Tommi I — Google review
Unfortunately, the pizza left a lot to be desired. The crust felt like a typical processed, factory-made version. Adding feta cheese to a standard margherita was also a poor choice. The salad was the smallest I’ve ever been served, and the few chicken pieces hidden at the bottom were barely visible.
Erik S — Google review
If you want a really bad pizza experience, this is it. Unfortunately, never experienced such bad pizza. And a glass of coca cola poured from a large bottle costs 3 euros. Also quite dirty. Not worth a cent.
Travellers E — Google review
The kitchen is just too slow. Don't go here unless you have no issues with waiting more than 1 hour for your food. Regardless of how many customers are seated in the restaurant it just takes way too long. The pizza was burned when I got it after waiting more than a hour. The pasta was just eatable coz we were just too hungry. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Ahmed A — Google review
I feel compelled to share my recent encounter with what can only be described as the worst pizza I have ever had the misfortune of ordering. It was such a disappointment that I found myself doing something I never thought I would do – I had to remove the meat from the pizza entirely. The pizza was so unappetizing that it left me perplexed. Despite my hunger, I couldn't bring myself to finish it.

Nestled in the heart of Haapsalu, just a short stroll from the historic Haapsalu Castle, Villa & Restoran Soffa is a delightful culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. This charming establishment boasts elegant air-conditioned rooms and complimentary Wi-Fi, making it a perfect spot for both relaxation and indulgence.
Went for a quick meal and beer. Sunny weather attracted us to sit outside. The place has a quiet and private corner outside with few tables where you can sit and enjoy. The menu is sufficent and small, easy to figure out what to order. I ordered french onion soup, which was tasty and had a good old Valmiermuiža beer, which you cannot go wrong! Fast service, probably because there was not many people around there, I think. Seems like they offer accommodation aswell, do not have any experience with this one. Maybe next time, but I will recommend to go eat or have a drink there definitely!

Excellent location right in town. Large bright basic rooms. Common bathrooms. My booking said that breakfast was included, but I only received it on my first morning. Feeling ripped off, as the hotel is very expensive if you don't get your breakfast. WiFi was unbelievably poor. In Estonia it's extremely important to have wifi so you can research your transport, as public transport is limited.
Globetrotters C — Google review
Just ate there, so I gave the rooms 4 stars🤷🏻‍♂️Food was awesome. Hamburger was nice and nicely cooked (medium+ but juicy). Desert was some Pavlova, it tasted awesome! Service was nice but our waiter was a little bit on the shy side and wasn't that talkative, might have been her limited English skills😅

The juiciest, most delicious duck you can get on Estonias western shore. Probably. The best I have found. Period. Spacious, outer terrace, cozy, excellent service and all-in-all a great dining experience.

From outside looks nice as well as inside. But the food is not too good, for sure Laterna baar have better food :) Service was very nice and super fast even while the restaurant was full. We couldn’t add a tip when paying by card. Richard was a great waiter and helped us to get fast the food between the movies during fantasy and horror festival, thank you!

One of the best food we ever had! It wasn’t really crowed so we first thought it might not be good but the problem is their location. People pass it on their way to inner city and might consider to go there later but then find another one and can’t be bothered to to back. Anyways, the employees are friendly and the food is just “mmm!” The meat is perfect, sauces are delicious, presentation nice and the desert was just amazing. Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The interior is cozy and everything really clean.

We went out for dinner in the evening, having heard good things about this place, but unfortunately the food was disappointing. The fish cakes were dry and overcooked and the potatoes served alongside were very brown and dry—likely reheated multiple times or left sitting warm for most of the day. The shrimp salad was nothing special, just average. Overall, the quality of the food did not match the high prices. A great spot right next to Haapsalu Castle! The staff were excellent—our waiter was especially friendly and handled our large table of 12 with ease. The salad was fresh, and there’s a good selection of drinks. The surroundings are beautiful and relaxing, making it a perfect place to enjoy lunch in the sun near the castle. Some sun umbrellas would be nice as I was absolutely cooked in the two hours spent in the sun. I should have brought a hat. Didn't spoil the experience though.

One of the best places to eat in Haapsalu. The menu has a mix of comfort/bistro style dishes, most of them easy to share. During the peak hours in the summer, you might have to wait for a table, so book ahead. They are famous for their HUGE cakes that are absolutely delicious (NB! one piece is enough for two people) - even if you don't have a sweet tooth, you must try those.

Ilon's Wonderland in Haapsalu, Estonia is a must-visit museum dedicated to the beloved works of Astrid Lindgren, the renowned children's book author. Named after Ilon Wikland, a famous Swedish artist of Estonian origin who illustrated many of Lindgren's books, this delightful amusement park offers interactive displays and original illustrations that bring to life the enchanting world of Lindgren's timeless characters like Pippi Longstocking.
How unexpected was I to find this treasure of Ilon’s Wonderland. Celebrating 50 years of her career. Such a legend! All her wonderful illustrations in the children’s books. Both inside and outside the wonderland there is magic at every corner. There are no right or wrong answers in the quiz hunt and you will be surprised by what is behind closed doors, just turn the key!

Lovely place for kids of different ages. There is enough to do and to look at for both small and big ones. And even for grown ups. Not sure if kids today are raised with Lindgren and Wikland, but i was. And plan to do the same for my kids. Activities for both indoors and outdoors. And occasionally there is a cafe. ▶️This museum is located in the building of the town hall built in 1775. The Town Hall was opened as a museum in 1950. The new permanent exhibition introduces Haapsalu in the beginning of the 20th century through the eyes of a visitor to the resort. ▶️The exposition provides an overview of life in Haapsalu, its urban environment and its most important sites. I'm really impressed about the quality of the exposition and super friendly lady hosting the museum 👍

Haapsalu Cathedral is a stunning medieval building that has been meticulously restored to its original splendor after being destroyed in WWII. It serves as the local Lutheran congregation's home and is a popular venue for concerts, known for its cozy and positive atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy wonderful performances in this grand setting. The cathedral is currently undergoing renovation, but it remains a beautiful place to visit and experience the Tchaikovsky festival or simply admire its historical significance.
A gorgeous medieval cathedral very well restored to its original grandeur after the destruction in WWII. The home for local Lutheran congregation and very popular concert venue.

Talumehe kõrts is a charming eatery that exudes the warmth of a rustic wooden cabin, making it an inviting spot for diners. The unique decor adds to its cozy atmosphere, and even the bathroom is worth a visit! Guests can enjoy a satisfying selection of beers on tap, including local favorites from Haapsalu. The food here has garnered praise for its deliciousness and generous portions, with highlights like rich bird dishes and juicy pork ribs served alongside baked potatoes.
We went there to eat very late but they served us despite that. Very nice. We had a starter, roasted garlic bread with dip, very delicious but quite a lot :O the food came quick and both meals were really tasty. Sadly we couldn't finish everything. We would recommend the restaurant if you visit Haapsalu :)

Pork ribs and owen-baked potato were good. There is a selection of dishes and drinks in the menu and friendly stuff. A good place to eat in the center of Haapsalu.
Yehor Y — Google review
The area around the block of restaurants was slightly decaying. The town does not have much besides a nearby castle. The restaurant, however, was great. The dumplings that I had were very good and I highly recommend. The chicken was flavorful but had an odd texture. The potatoes were overly oily but cooked to a nice texture. We had a yogurt dessert with fruits that was good. I also recommend that.

Eventhough I wasn't sure what fish 'herring' was (didn't google it..) I ordered this. Food was really good and plated nicely. I ordered 'vodka with soda' and got something with coke, which I do not prefer. Did drink it anyways and got tipsy as I wished :)

Sitting inside as weather was rainy. Although many clients, service was not so quick but it was friendly and we had good time. Kama was very tasty.

A bit pricey, but most of the restaurants in Estonia are, so can't complaint on this. The cheese balls were great, as well as the main courses. Good stuff.

Nice place, perfect location. Tasty food and friendly service. Will come here one more time for sure to try something else. This place is very good if you like to eat juicy pork ribs with baked potatoes and a pint of a beer.
Igors J — Google review
We entered, but as we did not know if we can sit down or should we wait to be seated, we stayed in the doorway. The staff looked at us, but neither of them said anything or even looked at us, so we got the feeling, that they obviously don't want customers. After waiting for a while and waiting for the staff to notice us at all, we left the place and went somewhere else instead.
