East Lancashire Railway - Rawtenstall Station

Heritage railroad
The East Lancashire Railway - Rawtenstall Station is a charming heritage railway that offers a delightful journey through the picturesque Rossendale Valley. Established in 1844, this historic line originally connected Manchester to Bury and has since expanded to cover 12 miles between Rawtenstall and Heywood, with stops at notable locations like Ramsbottom and Summerseat. Visitors can enjoy unique experiences such as dining on board vintage dining cars while being pulled by classic steam engines.
Pre-booked a day Rover for a family of 5 for a very reasonable £23. Spent the day in very well maintained steam and diesel engines going back and forth on the East Lancs Railway which included a visit to the transport museum in Bury as part of the ticket. All staff were very friendly and helpful and we had a great day. Will definitely do it again

It's definitely worth a visit. Had a fantastic day with a day rover ticket. All the staff/volunteers were really helpful. Good value, especially if you book beforehand online. It's dog friendly too.

Travelled from rawtenstall to bury on the diesel service, lovely and quiet Saturday morning. Took my 20 month old she absolutely loved it. Tied it into a trip to the transport museum which we both thoroughly enjoyed. The vibe was great, staff were lovely and chipper. We visited the shop at the end of Bury station too which is raising funds to restore engines. Fabulous little.shop.fornthe enthusiast and general visitor alike, ran by volunteers who are passionate and friendly.

Great journey on a steam train, kids and adults were all excited to be on it. Staff were great and interacted with the kids and even recovered my car keys which I dropped. We'll worth the experience. 😁
Keith C — Google review
The ELR's premier railway station at the head (almost) of the Rossendale Valley. Where nothing is as it seems and strange goings on take place at an alarming rate! The station master is an ace guy who is responsible for most of the 'Goings On!' Seriously, give it a visit if you are in the area, the volunteers are superb and will make you very welcome ! Why not try a ride on one of the heratage steam locos why you are there!

Was a very enjoyable day, we went with our 2yo and 8yo both had a great day. All the staff here are very helpful and friendly, food was great at Bury station cafe.. Our day rover tickets also gave us free entry to the Museum superb

Love it here, a very picturesque heritage line between Heywood and Rawtenstall. All the staff are friendly and very helpful especially for the event weekends they put on. Can't wait for the next 👌

Fantastic service and very friendly staff, it was a shame the steam train was not running because of the very hot weather but had a great time

This place is amazing! The owners Danielle and Neil are so lovely as well. We have been loads of times but my favourite was for my son’s 1st birthday party! They decorated the room so nicely for us and children between the ages of 1-8 came and had so much fun! There’s so much to do but we love the role play area and the sensory room the most! Can’t recommend this place enough!
Danielle C — Google review
We’ve just returned from my son’s 4th birthday party at inside out. We have long loved this play centre as it’s so calm, fun and different from others. Danielle and the team are so lovely, nothing is too much trouble and there are always creative ideas and different elements. My son chose this as his favourite place to hold his first’with friends’ party and I am so so glad he did. We had the classic party package with a jungle theme. The play centre looked beautiful, it was so wonderful to have the whole place for our group and despite some last minute confirmations (and an unconfirmed attendee) Danielle and Neil handled it amazingly, sorted food and even a little gift for the unexpected guest as we didn’t have a party bag for them. Having been to some other parties that can feel a bit formulaic this was so personal and wonderful in every way. It really feels like they absolutely are as invested as we are and it was a great experience start to finish! Thank you so so much!
Claire W — Google review
Took our 18 month old here and he loved it. It is a great place and really creative in terms of what is on offer. The sensory play room upstairs is fantastic.

We all went to a party at Inside Out. It was absolutely fab. All laid out so well and spotlessly clean. It was good for my grandson, who was 5, but my granddaughter, who was 9 equally enjoyed it. However I would say it is aimed more at the younger ones. I loved the sensory room, upstairs, and wished I could have stayed up there myself … so relaxing. I thought the lunch was really good too. Instead of having a mountain of food put on the table, each child had their own wooden tray catering to their specific requirement. I thought this a really good idea. Adults can purchase drinks and snacks if required.
Caroline L — Google review
Absolutely fantastic place for kids of all ages. We have been looking for options around Rawtenstall and this place ticks all the boxes. There are active play areas with slide and trampoline and ball areas. Also a lovely sensory room which is one of the nicest ones I’ve seen. Really cosy in there. And then the messy play areas where they can paint and play with sand etc. The cafe is also really good and sandwiches were nice. I’d recommend for all kids, my little one is 18m and had lots of fun.
Nadine M — Google review
We love it here. So much time and effort goes in to setting up the activities and toys and you can really tell. The staff are always lovely and approachable alongside this it’s always spotless! Would highly recommend to all parents as there is something for every child, even newborns with their amazing sensory room. (Pictures are all from different visits)
Hannah — Google review
Danielle & Neil were friendly, warm & very welcoming. The activity centre has a variety of play stations/areas and all are equipped so beautifully- there was a cosy feel throughout. The sensory room was a great experience. We had pancakes and coffee at the cafe- they were delicious and good value for money. A lovely addition to Rawtenstall, would highly recommend. Thank you for a great afternoon- the kids had lots of fun.

The Whitaker in Rawtenstall, Lancashire is a charming museum that showcases modern art exhibitions and features a picturesque garden. It also houses a restaurant where visitors can enjoy a variety of meals, including options for children. The museum offers an enriching experience with its range of exhibitions and events, making it an ideal destination to embrace the culture of Rawtenstall. Additionally, the surrounding area of Rossendale has plenty to offer for exploration and discovery.
I attended recently with my classmates. I didn't want to spoil too much in terms of the displays in the museum, but it was a wonderful experience. The staff were very kind. The layout and display inside are stunning; I've included some pictures of what I've taken. I would love to show all the photos, but I don't want it to discourage people from going to the Whitaker. There are fantastic displays, and the café serves terrific coffee.

Really interesting things in there. Arts wasn't very interesting this time, but there is more than just that there. Nice cafe and a big park to walk around in with plenty of room for kids to run around. Tennis courts and football pitch as well. Will be back when everything is warmer and plants are in full bloom.
Janne — Google review
A cracking little find right on our doorstep. If you're offended by vintage taxidermy, then maybe not for you. Some wonderful exhibits in a wonderful house. The entrance is free, also a beautifully decorated. With great food, a cafe is attached.
Steve M — Google review
Visited her to meet up with friends and grab drink and lunch. Very impressed with whole set up and a fabulous place to visit, catering for all ages. Park is beautifully maintained and set out, with even a community garden encouraging people to enjoy free herbs and cuttings. A baby playgroup was being held outside, which looked great fun for all. Only managed a quick scoot around the actual house, so didn't enjoy the galleries, but chatted to staff who gave me a potted history, which matched the stunning venue.
Stephanie F — Google review
I can't believe we've not visited the museum before today as we pass it weekly. Free parking and entrance with the loveliest of welcomes both at reception and in the cafe. Not the biggest museum but interesting exhibits, especially in the cupboard of curiosities. Great quality coffee, the food menu looks good too, sadly we won't be going for a pint with its £8.00 price tag.
Carole R — Google review
Visited here on a late Sunday afternoon ( bh aswell) . Pleased by free parking. Disabled access If needed. Was slightly disappointed as the cafe was shut that day but the museum.was open. Free entry to museum but donations welcomed to help support. This is a hidden little gem. Lots of interesting things to look at Inside .. a few pics to tease to the spoils but certainly doesn't show all the things to haze upon. The exhibition we saw was voiced by Jane horrors and is only there until June 1st. Will definitely be going to pack to see future installations.
Rebecca C — Google review
Brilliant local museum hiding in plain sight housing a fascinating permanent collection, especially the Cabinet of Curiosities. The museum hosts regular contemporary art exhibitions, and a range of community activities and workshops. The grounds feature a community garden, tennis courts, and sculptures, and there is now a bar and restaurant. Free entry, with donation points which take cash or card, and there's a gift shop. A short walk from Rawtenstall town centre, and accessible via the 464 bus route (Accrington - Rochdale).

A delightful, small but perfectly formed gallery. The cabinet of curiosities was a great surprise. Nice gardens and park surrounding it. Stone's throw from shops and cafes. A few fun exhibits for children too.

The Halo is a remarkable steel artwork, situated at Top o Slate near Haslingden. Installed in 2007, this monumental sculpture has an impressive 18-meter diameter and stands out for its unique design. During the day, it shines in a silver hue; however, after dark, it undergoes a captivating transformation with blue LED lights powered by wind energy. The Halo forms part of a collection of Panopticons scattered across Lancashire and commissioned by Mid Pennine Arts.
Beautiful walk and lovely views from the halo. Unfortunately there have been cars up there rallying around the halo so it is a muddy quagmire. Really spoilt the experience as had to plough through all the ankle deep mud.
Denise R — Google review
Walked up on the road (parking up there) then through the field - wow impressive! Walked round until dusk to see the lights on, must look amazing when it's fully dark. Great views, the turbine powering the lights spins so fast, smelt like burning, surprised it doesn't fly off! Shame idiots drive near it, though the puddles in the muddy groves make lovely reflections!
Ilona R — Google review
It's only a short walk to and around it. It has a board that tells you about it but you are better looking online first about the history of it. The road to get to it is single track so you have to wish nobody is coming towards you. Parking is limited on the road only. It is supposed to light up at night but we didn't stay that long or don't want to go back in a hurry
Jayne W — Google review
Be careful driving on the road to The Halo as it's very narrow with blind bends. It's a beautiful view up there, and you can see miles around. The Halo isn't much to see during the daytime as it comes more to its right in the dark when the blue lights are on.
Janne — Google review
One of the 4 Lancashire panopticons, worth a visit if in the area. The site can be a little muddy and would benefit from some additional landscaping.
Richard S — Google review
Look, Halo is impressive. But it’s literally a structure. It’s not even lit so at night it’s not striking. Seems like a missed opportunity to me (but maybe lighting it is tricky - it’s in the middle of nowhere). Apart from some lovely views there’s nothing here. Well, there is a car park, which is useful.
Steve M — Google review
Been intending to visit the halo for a while so today was the day. Great walk with 3 different car parks. Was really good to see and will return at night at some point. Slightly disappointed the site doesn't feel as its been looked after. Alot of over growth no bins in the closest car park graffiti appear on the steel structure. I'd say definitely worth a visit some great views however needs some attention on the up keep
Simon — Google review
Great views of Rossendale and Manchester. There's a car park about 2 minutes from the halo, but this can only hold approx 4 cars and has huge pot holes and lots of rubbish in it, so be careful! The walk itself is well paved and buggy and rider proof, as is the whole walking trail that it is linked with, so you can make your visit as long or as short as you like. The road leading up to the car park is 1 car wide, so be careful and drive slowly as it's a steep drop and isn't very well covered, with lots of tight bends. Have fun!

Fast food restaurant
McDonald's is a beloved fast-food institution that has stood the test of time, famous for its iconic burgers and crispy fries. While many patrons rave about the friendly staff and consistently hot food, some have noted cleanliness issues in the restrooms that seem to persist despite reports to management. On a recent visit, one traveler enjoyed a quick meal featuring the red hot burger and a Biscoff McFlurry, all served within minutes at an affordable price.
I came here today and I got the red hot burger a large sprite , biscoff mcflurry and I came within 7 minutes of me ordering and it cost me around 11£ not bad and it was delicious and I wasn't busy there was just 7 people inside
Nikolai — Google review
Quality of food is starting to drift. Food presentation can be poor, drinks are often short measured and ice cream cones are a lottery on how little ice cream you get. Disappointing. Updated review 09/04/24 No real change to my original review. Getting a whole meal that is all fresh is very much a lottery, normally something is cold. It seems to have gone down since covid, and the increase in home deliveries has made things slower/worse. Can take or leave McD's. Updated review 09/06/24 Had one meal that everything was fresh, hot and the correct amount, thought I'd make the day! No different to most fast food places tbh. None seem to care anymore. Update 09/10/24 See recent meal I got. Superb presentation! quarter pounder falling apart and triple cooked chips. That's me done. Too many times being ripped off with food that's cold/thrown together, and generally no care. Poor McDonald's, very very poor.

staff were nice, food was good, met adrian he explained his friend group and gave us all quarters so we could get a barbershop haircut, we also ate the fries which gave us x-ray vision for grippers. We also ordered some coffee but my friend Steven didn’t give effoc and my order number was 67 and took 41 minutes to arrive.

Its maccies init so cant really go wrong only issue is the buns for the mcmuffins are stupidly small like whoever thought they were a good idea needs to be demoted a few pegs and anyone else who agreed with them because thats honestly such a joke.

Honestly if was able to I wouldn’t have given a star. Never gets the order right have more chance getting an order correct from nursery children. Highly recommend going to Abdul’s curry shop around the corner instead. Thank you for the” amazing” quality of food and caramel flavoured ice cubes. Thanks

Hamburgers served warm (not hot) with no gherkins in. Chips were cold and tasted like they'd been sat there for hours. Milkshake not mixed and tasted odd. Not given any napkins. Now for the positive. The substandard food was served quickly! Worst Maccys I've been to.

Nice staff, food always piping hot but tge toilets are absolutely gross. Been a few times and always the same. Think they dont realise that under the seat and the toilet bowl gets dirty too. Wouldn't mind if if was a one off experience but it's always the same. And with a little one in tow it cant even ne avoided. I've reported it several times to staff, they apologise but don't solve the issue x

Beautiful food and drinks! I came here for the first time for a bottomless brunch, and it's the best brunch I've been to. The service was amazing. Also, the music needs improving, but everything else was just perfect. I would recommend this place for a bottomless brunch!

Wasn't impressed with the Service as soon as we arrived we waited few mins at the front desk for someone to come greet us . Was asked any allergies and follow me. No hi you okay thanks for waiting ect.... Was shown to our table. Had to repeat our order several times to the waiter so it was understood. The food however was delicious but the atmosphere was very lacking of anything exciting for a Sunday afternoon . You could see the Steam trains arriving though through the window.

Booked for sat dinner, arrived and we were happily greeted and were shown to our table, ordered and soon after the starter came, baby pork ribs were delicious. Then once finished the sharer plate came, all 3 meats were wonderfull. I only have 3 suggestions regarding the sides, French fries were too cooked, sauces were very tiny, as a sharer plate at least double the sauces as the meat is not seasoned at all, could suggest having some table salt on the tables? We had desert after, the firepit Sunday and it was quite good. Waiter was lovely and very attentive. Nice ambiance and music playing. Defo recommend a visit.
Isabel P — Google review
Myself and my husband have been coming to the Firepit in Rawtenstall for years now, well before Covid (was the first place we went back to when we were allowed ‘out again!) and we’ve always loved it. On a weekend it was always such a good atmosphere, good music, busy, staff were always super friendly and attentive. However, the last 3 or 4 times we’ve been it’s been such a disappointment and got worse each visit. Totally understand finances have changed for a lot of people and businesses, and it’s really evident here. The menu hasn’t changed for so long, but the prices are now way off. We visited last Sunday myself, husband and 2 children and our total for starters and mains, two drinks each was £168. Now, for a nice meal out, which included 3 alcoholic drinks, we don’t mind splashing out every now and then but we really felt that it wasn’t value for money at all. Service was really really slow despite the place being almost empty, and we had to find someone to ask for another round of drinks ages after we’d finished them and the starters. Even a week later we still say how we can’t believe it was so expensive. The food was average at best, I had steak that had no taste; we bought steaks from M&S last night and cooked at home and they were so flavourful! That and for two fillet it cost the same as one at TFP. We’re gutted that it’s not as good anymore as it really was our favourite place to go for date nights or for a nice tea out with the kids. Safe to say that last weekend will probably be the last time we visit. It’s a shame too as we spoke briefly with a member of staff the time previously who said he was new to the establishment and was hoping to get it back up and running how it used to. Hopefully things improve and we may give it another chance in a few years.

Our evening at The Firepit was exceptional from start to finish. We were greeted with a warm welcome from Kyle the manager. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and due to having the grandchildren, we had been thoughtfully placed in the conservatory away from the bar area. We enjoyed the steak on a rock and the kebab, both were cooked to perfection and the aromas were unreal. The mocktails were refreshing and beautifully presented. A special thanks to the team and Kyle, the manager whose attentive and friendly presence made our grandchildren feel especially welcome and our grandson felt extra special on his birthday. Truly a five-star experience in every way.
Manda P — Google review
Highly Recommended! Large selection on the menu, including Halal, Gluten free and Vegetarian! Well, where to start! Starters of course, with a large portion of baby back ribs in a sticky smoke glaze and sesame, more than ample for myself and left me wondering if I would have room for mains! Garnished with Chilli and Spring onion, tender meat, falling off the bone is a strong starter that could only be beaten by the steak. Onto the Main event- Steak on a stone… You may have had sizzlers before but not to this standard!! 10oz Ribeye, seared and still Cooking to your taste. Whilst this may be a novel idea, I did wonder why I wasn’t asked how I would like the Steak! Want it rare, take it off, want it well, leave it on! Whilst working through the ample sides, which I chose Wild Mushrooms and fries. With Wide selection of sauces and sides to accompany the steak, there’s something for all tastes. I will be visiting again and have recommended to many friends already! I couldn’t fault this place unless I tried the entire menu, and still wouldn’t! Plenty of room in the restaurant, subtle lighting and modern music covering older and more modern scores. Parking can be tight but there are local car parks in walking distance.
John G — Google review
Steaks were absolutely shocking, ordered three med rare, all three were cooked well done and dry, we mentioned this and they were replaced with three steaks that we opted to cook on a hot stone ourselves as we didn’t have much confidence in the kitchen. These arrived and the owner told us “now you can’t complain since you’re cooking them yourselves”. The replacement steaks were served with no seasoning at all and were very bland. 6 chances to produce a nice steak and the kitchen couldn’t do one good one. At £50 per person I expect a lot better. Save yourself some money, get a steak at the supermarket and watch a YouTube video on how to cook it, guaranteed to be nicer. The guys serving drinks and taking orders were nice and attentive though, sadly didn’t make up for the food.

I don’t normally put bad reviews but this place was very disappointing. From the start of walking in, the place and atmosphere was dead there was two people sat in on a Saturday night, we wondered why it was so dead !! We nearly walked out but gave the place a chance. All the food was freezer food and was out within 5 mins. The meatballs were really poor when u cut in to them you can see they are 100% freezer food warmed up why would any chef serve this kind of food ?! There was just no effort, no herbs no flavour to the food. Rubbish. Definitely will not return.

Really good selection. Enjoyed our food and drink - including Spanish cider! Last night before lockdown. Missing cinnamon for the churros! But they were hot, crispy, fresh. Recommend. Also parked directly outside.

We've been to Casa Tapas a few times and always have a very tasty meal. My husband lived in Spain for a year and rates the food as very authentic Spanish. The restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere. It's fairly expensive but worth the money. Will be back!

A fabulous experience at Casa Tapas. Authentic cuisine, friendly and knowledgeable staff and a good atmosphere. We shared 6 tapas between 2 and the lamb pieces were exceptional. There isn't many places still taking extra safety procedures, but this restaurant are doing it brilliantly. My only regret is not visiting sooner. We'll be back.

Very overpriced for the quality and quantity of food, I am aware of the portion sizes when it comes to tapas but paying almost £10 for dishes and £7 for others I wouldn’t expect to leave hungry after paying £85 for 4 people with very little on our plates. We decided to complain and the waitress was very polite and passed it on to her manager who then came over to speak to us. He was adamant his food was of quality and reasonably priced as he had been running his business for over 20 plus years… when we disagreed he got aggressive and asked me and my friends to never come back to his restaurant. We got 1 plate discounted from our bill for the inconvenience but was spoken to very rudely. The waitresses was very friendly and polite throughout our stay but management and ownership was very disappointing

I am from Spain and been in UK for about 10 years, I have been to many tapas bar in the UK some good some very good and some not so good, I have just moved in this area and found casa tapas when i was passing and saw the alhambra sign so being a lover of Spanish beer I thought I will give it a try, was not disappointed with anything, I was a bit cautious if the quality would be good, the place was quite with just two other tables, so we ordered just a few tapas and were not disappointed at all and decided to try the paella and I asked them how long it would take and was told about 40-50 min which told me that it would be cooked when I ordered it , I enjoyed the chicken paella it was as good as the the ones I have eaten in Spain. Will be going back soon with some friends who have never been

Nestled in the picturesque Twine Valley, The Fisherman’s Retreat Ltd is a charming restaurant and wedding venue that has been family-run since its inception in 1992. Originally established as a cozy spot for anglers to enjoy a warm meal, it has transformed into a beloved dining destination known for its commitment to local produce. Guests can savor an array of dishes ranging from hearty pub classics like cheese and onion pie to exquisite sharing plates featuring whole roast suckling pigs and chateaubriand steaks.
We enjoyed a Superb Afternoon tea yesterday at The Fisherman’s Retreat. Delicious sandwiches, delicate cakes and freshly baked scones, and lovely vegetarian alternatives. Excellent service and lovely surrounds. Will definitely return.

To celebrate our 20th anniversary, we were on the lookout for somewhere new and special. A friend (thanks, Rick!) recommended The Fisherman’s Retreat in Ramsbottom, and what a great suggestion that turned out to be. We decided to make a full weekend of it by staying at The Stables, located just down the road from the Retreat. If you’re planning a visit, we’d highly recommend staying there. It’s peaceful, comfortable, and ideally situated. Booking a table at the restaurant was refreshingly easy. Just a quick form on their website, and I received a confirmation email shortly after. I did request a window seat (having heard about the lovely views), but was politely informed that it’s a first-come, first-served basis, which is fair enough. When we arrived, the building looked beautiful both inside and out. The bar is the first area you pass as you walk in, so we headed there to let the staff know we had arrived for our booking. We were shown to our table promptly, and to our delight, we were seated right by the window. Result! That said, I discovered the window seat is a bit of a double-edged sword. While the view was indeed stunning, the sun was absolutely beaming through when we were there, and it got pretty toasty. Still, we’d requested it, so we didn’t complain. Just soaked it up (quite literally!). As for the food, we went for hearty comfort choices. I had the haddock with chips and mushy peas, my partner opted for the casserole, and our daughter kept it simple with sausage, chips, and beans. The haddock was spot on, perfectly crispy batter and full of flavour. My only little niggle was with the chips. They weren’t quite as golden or crunchy as I personally prefer. Still tasty, but just a tad under for my liking. The staff were friendly and welcoming throughout, with warm smiles, happy to help, and made us feel right at home. Overall, The Fisherman’s Retreat made our anniversary weekend really special. It’s a lovely spot with character, good food, and friendly service. Just be ready for that window sunshine if you’re lucky enough to snag a view seat! Would we go again? Absolutely. Maybe we’ll try it in the evening next time. I bet the sunset over the hills is something else.

Had our second amazing meal here, absolutely delicious .. nicest steak pie I've ever had and my partner said the same about his steak pudding. You're in for a treat here. Great service, beautiful surroundings, just love it.

After more than twenty years this is my last visit. It’s Thursday night and we were seated behind a child watching a loud video on her mum’s phone. I asked to be moved to another table. Mum, pathetically, tried to take the phone off the three year old but she fought back and won hands down. Then the child spent the next five minutes running around the restaurant, clearly unable to read the sign forbidding her to do so. Perfect mum gave up and bought her the ice cream she said she couldn’t have unless she behaved herself, poor parenting reinforcing reward for bad behaviour, I’m sure the kid learnt an important lesson! Following this a couple were seated beside us with another child unable to sit and eat at the table without the aid of a very loud video on mum’s phone. This continued throughout our and their meal. The food is good, not great, but the unerringly bad parenting and the loud electronic high pitched whine from cartoon characters has ruined my evening. If they wish to eat whilst watching videos maybe they should stay at home and leave others to enjoy their meal in peace. It’s more like a wacky warehouse pub than a restaurant, which is very dissatisfying. I’ll not be back Arnie.

Fantastic as always. Been going here for years, if not longer. Food and service always fantastic. Consistency is key and FR nails it every time. Always strikes me how the young waiting staff are very pleasant and competent with people skills - which isn't always the case - they're a credit to themselves.

I am French and very fuzzy when eating out. We have been to "The Fisherman's Retreat" restaurant sevral times. Never disappointed. The food is excellent and delicious. My son had the T bone steak, cooked to perfection. Staff are so attentive and very pleasant. My hubby ordered a large ice cream for desert. A mistake was made but rectified straight away by two icecreams 🥰. The views from the restaurant are beautiful. A lovely place to relax. ❤
