Braies in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Braies, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Braies, in South Tyrol’s Dolomites, is best known for its emerald-green Lake Braies, framed by dramatic limestone peaks and dense forests. Visitors come to walk the lakeside path, rent rowboats on the mirror-like water, and access hiking trails that lead into Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. The village and surrounding area showcase traditional Tyrolean architecture and cuisine, blending Italian and Austrian influences. Clear alpine light and striking mountain scenery also make it a favorite spot for photographers year-round.
With favorites like kiosk, Boutique Lago di Braies, and Sonnleiten, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Kiosk Parking Pragser Wildsee and Hotel Restaurant Steinerhof so you can get the best taste of Braies while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Bodies of Water
Pragser Wildsee, also known as Lake Braies, is a stunning alpine lake nestled in the South Tyrol region of Italy. Surrounded by majestic mountains, its turquoise-green waters create a picturesque reflection. The area offers climbing opportunities and is famous for its appearance in the Italian TV series 'Un passo dal Cielo.' Visitors can enjoy the historic hotel nearby and indulge in dining experiences while taking in the breathtaking views.
Lovely place to visit, beautiful water. Winter time is great to go to avoid large crowds, summer the lake is packed, you can best most of the crowd in the spring/summer months by going very early but shops will not be open.

In my opinion, this is one of the top 3 landscapes to see in Italy. My partner and I walked around the lake, which is 3.8 km long. At times there were quite a lot of people, even forming small queues, but for most of the route we could walk at our own pace. Tip: if the mountain views at the starting point don’t seem that impressive, it’s better to walk around the lake clockwise rather than counterclockwise. This way, the most beautiful part of the scenery will be towards the end of the walk, and your photos will turn out better.
KOTKALLE O — Google review
Nice small lake and good views of the surrounding moutains. But in my opinion nothing out of the ordinary - its just a mountain lake and a very commercialised one. You can rent boats for 45min which will cost 55€ and parking is also 15€. The path around the lake is very crowded as well. I think there are more beautiful and especially more calm lakes in the dolomites that would be worth your time and money.
Joran B — Google review
Lago di Braies is absolutely breathtaking! The crystal-clear turquoise water surrounded by majestic mountains looks like something out of a postcard. It’s the perfect place for a peaceful walk, a boat ride, or just relaxing and taking in the view. Every angle is stunning, especially in the early morning or at sunset. The air feels so fresh and calm—it’s pure magic. A must-see spot in the Dolomites that you’ll never forget!
Patrick T — Google review
Best lake in the Dolomites in Italy and a MUST visit. It is also referred to as 'The pearl of the Dolomites'. Circular route around this magical mountain lake is a great experience for young and old because the entire hiking trail is safe and well marked. Walking distance from bus stop and car parking.
NATURE'S D — Google review
Gloomy day for us but still breathtaking views. Rented a row boat and bopped around the lake for a bit before grabbing a bite and heading out. Plan your trip accordingly, it can be crazy during the busy months. Do your research!
Brian F — Google review
Gorgeous turquoise lake that reminds me of lake Louise in banff Canada. Rented a row boat for 55€ that includes 2 magnets and 45 minutes of row time. It was pretty windy with a slight drizzle when we arrived at 5:30pm. Last boat is at 7pm. There was a slight wait but we didn’t wait too long to get on the lake
Vu N — Google review
Dont dare to come on the weekend or public holiday. Cause it was such a catastrophe. The parking place was full and you need to parking for the hotel and it cost you around 15€/ hour. You can barely walking cause it was full of people. The charm from this Lake was gone cause this mass tourism. I hope the government take this case seriously

Lake Braies

Park
Lake Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee, is a stunning natural gem nestled in the Dolomite foothills of South Tyrol. The picturesque lake offers breathtaking views all year round, with the surrounding mountains reflecting in its tranquil blue waters. Visitors can rent boats to explore the lake and capture perfect shots without crowds.
Enchanting place! It's really better to go and see it in person. I don't know what other words I can use to describe this place. I can only say that God is really great in his creation of the world. There are many parking lots, but the price also depends on the distance. During high season, it's better to book online, because the parking lots are really full, it's really visited by many tourists. You can bring food and you can have a picnic near the lake, but just be mindful of your trash, throw it in the right place. There is also a restaurant there, if you don't want to bring food, but of course it's a bit pricey. If you can, you can also go trekking and there are many trails there that you can go through. We didn't do it because I have a small child, & we don't have the proper shoes for trekking, we just walked nearby. You can't swim in Lake Braies, but you can rent a boat to go around the lake. Visiting Lake Braies is really a great experience, so I encourage you to go with your family.
Roma G — Google review
The most beautiful lake. Option to rent boats from 10am. The walking loop around the outside is very easy. The first stretch going anti-clockwise is incredibly accessible with lots of dogs. If you go clockwise, it’s a bit more of a hike with stairs up and down, but very easy. The entire walk has incredible views
Holly — Google review
I loved this place, that was so beautiful. There are parking there, I really recommend you buy your ticket before go there, because can be you didn’t find this option available. You can have many moments alone or with your family, there are some table for you have meal and take photos. You need to buy a ticket if you would like to go in the lake with a boat, that option is available on time when you arrive (normally)
Tiago M — Google review
Amazing place, touristic but definitely worth to visit. We came here mid September so it was not packed with people. The lake is beautiful and you must hike around it. The path is around 3-4km and easy. Perfect activity with family. There is an option to rent a boat, i think it costs 50€/h if you want it by yourself or 15€/h with other 5 people. The parking is 15€ for 3h
Amita J — Google review
A must see , walk on the beach leisurely or hike all the around , lake. From every angle the views, the colors of the water, mountain and sky and the overall levels of excitement are changing . One of the most beautiful lakes int he Dolomites. Attempting the online parking ticket for the P3 or 4 is worth every cent, as you get to drive in the beautiful valley leading to the lake and park within a short walking distance. This will also save you time at the entrance (especially during season)
Ronen C — Google review
This is one of the best place in dolomite. Even reaching here was wonderful scenic drive. Nice cafe in the entrance just sit there facing towards the lake side what a peace. From every corner lake will give you different picture all amaizing. Dont miss the classic boat ride.
Sanjaykumar M — Google review
It's not as big as it seems on instagram but it's cute. Its possible to do some trekking around the lake because there is a well defined track. It's easy and it takes around 1 to 2 hours, depending on how much you stayed for pics. The boats are available only during summer, until October.
Sheyla A — Google review
Another overrated place in Italy that, thanks to those empty headed influencers, I now place on the same level as Positano. You can literally find many lakes in Italy (and Switzerland, Austria, etc) with the same color water and no crowds. Why on earth would you come here other that because of FOMO. Parking is expensive too (I think it was $10 for an hour on P1, so consider instead parking on P2 for a longer walk but half the price). During the summer there's an online reservation system. If you want to see the alpine colors you see in Instagram pictures you'll have to come when the sun hits the lake directly, so around noon in the Fall and Winter.

Cappella "Lago di Braies" is a small chapel located at the end of a loop trail, offering visitors the chance to learn about the intriguing WWII history of the lake. Emmas Bistro is a newly opened restaurant located in historic horse stables by the shore, offering a lavish spread of South Tyrolean food. Visitors have praised the friendly staff and pet-friendly atmosphere, with one guest even receiving a special plate for their dog's carrot. The restaurant has received positive reviews for its delicious ribs and scenic location next to the lake. While some found the prices slightly high, many agreed that it was justified by the beautiful setting.
Perfect place to not skip any food. We were there during cold so enjoyed warm coffee. Pizza slices were great and the cake selection was super

Food was good but a bit expensive aka what is typical in high tourist areas. They have lots of outdoor seated that is shaded with beautiful views of the lake. The employees could be friendlier. One was annoyed I asked for a food item at the other end of the food setup.

Nice cosy place to chill and grab food after walking around the lake brais. Great food and decent prices. Ordered the meatball with mixed vegs and potato as well as pork ribs. (Excellent!)
Pat K — Google review
I maybe found the most arrogant bunch of bistro staff in the world. The food was terrible, Germans would be horrified by the fake German cuisine. Polenta tasted like calf scours. The staff thought we were American and talking derogatory about us. Disorganised and confusing service, don’t expect a smile. Do yourself a favour and stay clear of this place. On the flip side the beer was good and the view stunning.

Great stop for a coffee and lunch. Quiet, out of the way, just off one of the main streets. Lots of bakery and pastry options, good coffee and the pizza was pretty good too. Tucked in just under the tower of the quint little old church. Mountain views all around from the plentiful outdoor seating. Staff were great.

Our vacation was spoiled. I recommend you not to choose mushrooms as side dish. Other 2 person who didn’t ordered mushrooms are okay.

Restaurant
Ristorante Lago di Braies - Pragser Wildsee is a special hotel located in a beautiful area near the train station, restaurant, and mountains. The rooms are spacious with an Art Nouveau interior and comfortable beds. The service is excellent. They serve food between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., offering good quality meals with reasonable prices and a great lake view.
The food was delicious and came very fast, very good lake view and good coffee.

Beautiful view and outdoor seating. Good service. Guitar strings pasta with tomato and mozzarella - 4.5 stars My husband loved the texture of the pasta and rates it one of his favourite on our trip. I thought it was decent (3.75 stars). Perch - 4 stars Good but tiny portion. Tyrolean cheese and meat platter - 3 stars Nothing special. Apple strudel - 3 stars Served cold. Pastry was like a gingerbread cookie - spiced but with the texture of a fig newton.
N T — Google review
Unfortunately we had the worst lunch experience ever last year in September! The food was such low quality that any serious restaurant owner would be embarrassed and the service was extremely bad. The waitress did not care at all, laughed at/about guests with her colleagues and rolled her eyes at every request - ridiculous behaviour for someone working in the service industry. We cannot recommend this restaurant but can recommend every other restaurant in the area, not directly located at the lake.
Vivian T — Google review
Tasteful food, prices are kind of expensive but ok.

Rude staff (except for one nice lady who is doing her best), food is very pricey and not good (very small portions, not very well cooked). You pay for the scenery (the lakes / mountains views are amazing!)

Grieswaldile Playground is a beautiful park that offers entertainment for the whole family. It features an array of Alpine-style games suitable for both children and adults, including a raft with a pond that brings joy to all kids. Spectacular winter hike from Carbonin on an easy hard-snow path u to the very top. 900 m total ascent and around 20 km round trip including a rifugio Prato Piazze visit. Magnificent views on Cristallo group, le tre cime di Lavaredo (only from the very top), the Croda rossa, Cadini di Misurina down to the Tofane group. It was a sunny cloudy-less late winter day.

Beautiful Place for a daily hike. In summer often many people on the top due to the easy way from Platzwiese

This hiking trail at the starts at the car parking of Prato Piazza (1965 m.) and after 5 kilometres takes you to the summit of Monte Specie (2304 m.) where you have an amazing panoramic view of the Dolomites, including the world famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The trail is flat until, after 2.5 km, you reach the Rifugio Vallandro, then it gets steeper. Along the way you can enjoy the peaceful and beautiful landscape around you with fields and grazing cows.

(Translated by Google) A trek that surprised me, I wasn't expecting much and instead it takes you to the top of the mountain from which the view is very beautiful. You can see the three peaks, the Cadini di Misurini and all the Dolomites around. Trek of about 1.5 hours, not too demanding. The only problem is the parking: to go up directly to Prato Piazza you have to pay, and the road is closed from 10 to 15 (not reported elsewhere except once you get there!). 10 euros if you go up in the morning, 7 euros after 15. There is also a shuttle but it passes once an hour, with a break during lunch time, but even if you want to park here and take the shuttle, parking costs 6 euros.

(Translated by Google) Monte Specie is definitely a trip worth doing if you are thinking of going to Prato Piazza (in Val Pusteria). The trip is nice, the very beautiful path that goes around a small hill. From the path you can already see the Dolomites all around. There is little or almost no shade so in summer it is best not to choose the very hot hours. At the top the view is breathtaking: 360 degree views of the Dolomites (including the Cime di Lavaredo), a fantastic point from which to see the various valleys all around you. Remember that it is not a forest road but a path (although quite easy) (Original) Il Monte Specie è sicuramente una gita da fare se si pensa di andare a Prato Piazza (in Val Pusteria).

The Sentiero al Lago di Braies is a picturesque hiking trail that leads to the stunning Lago di Braies, often referred to as 'Lago di Instagram' due to its breathtaking views. To fully enjoy this popular destination in the Dolomites, it's best to arrive early—before 9 am—to secure parking. While many visitors flock to the boathouse for photos and miss out on completing the entire loop trail, those who venture further are rewarded with beautiful scenery.

(Translated by Google) One of the most welcoming mountain lakes anywhere. Unfortunately, it's commercialized in Italy. Organized Italian parking chaos with exorbitant prices for unpaved parking spaces. A circular hiking trail is interrupted by countless wedding photographers snapping photos of the bride and groom in the most absurd poses, even though the tranquility and beauty of the lake are the real focus. Throughout the entire circular trail, the smell of wet dogs and their droppings constantly wafts up your nose. This has nothing to do with fresh, clean mountain air. This beautiful lake doesn't deserve that. Lago di Braies is a stunning destination that offers a unique experience in every season. While summer attracts the most visitors, it can get quite crowded. To avoid the crowds, consider visiting during mid-September to early-October. The lake is known for its breathtaking beauty and has implemented special traffic regulations due to its popularity. Rifugio Vallandro is a charming mountain hut that offers a mix of Tyrolean and Italian cuisine, making it an ideal stop for hikers exploring the nearby trails with breathtaking views of the Dolomites. Visitors have praised the recent refurbishment of the refuge, highlighting its cleanliness and comfortable rooms.
We enjoyed a very nice lunch on our way back from our hike. Generally all the huts we visited provided a very nice food and service. This place was not an exception. We enjoyed the food. It felt very simple, home made and fresh.

The only establishment with water around. If you don't pay 60€ for a night and you're camping, you have to pay 4€ for 1l of water. It's not a place in the mountains where people help each other, it is a commercial building for money. Edit: Our group together spent around 47€ for snacks, drinks and coffees, and we were not even entitled to refill our water bottles. We've never had an issue with water or thrash in any other hut, even deep in the mountains without any road access unlike this hut. I'm sad to see this behavior and lying in the comment section, just browse through the reviews sharing similar experiences and you can see what kind of behaviour you can expect in person... 😢

A fantastic hut in the Dolomites! Perfect service from start to finish, delicious local food, and cozy smaller rooms that guarantee a great night’s rest. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming – ideal for hikers seeking comfort after a day in the mountains.
Alexander G — Google review
Every other mountain hut allows hikers water and trash disposal. This one told us they only have water, trash, and power plugs for those who spend €60 a night to stay at their Refugio. When we asked if there’s any drinkable spring water nearby and they said no, when we spent €47 euros in their restaurant and then asked them about water— they still said no (would not even fill up one, even though it’s the only place with water around when you’re hiking). The managers then chased us away from the establishment, cursing at us in German, screaming that we have no money for anything and that they’ll call the police if my friend doesn’t delete his review stating their refusal to give water. Take your business elsewhere— these people hate backpackers
Maura — Google review

Shocking experience — be aware, especially hikers! Hello, I want to warn everyone about this place, which sadly gave us one of the worst experiences we’ve ever had during our travels. We are in Italy, a country known for kind and thoughtful people and especially in the mountains, where hikers usually help each other after long days of walking. But this place? Complete opposite. The first shock wasn’t even the fact that they refused to give us water, a basic human need. I’ve travelled all over the world, and even in the most remote places, people gave me water without hesitation. But here? You either pay 4 euros for a liter of water or go thirsty. That’s sad, but unfortunately, it happens in some places. The real shock came after my friend wrote an honest, respectful review describing our experience. Instead of accepting feedback, someone from the management came to us and threatened to call the police unless we deleted the review. Can you imagine? Instead of caring for their guests, they care only about protecting their reputation and making money. In total, we spent over 50 euros in two days for a few cakes and coffees. That’s not exactly cheap, and yet we were treated like a problem just for asking for some water and leaving honest feedback. To be fair: • Cakes: tasty. • Coffee: tasty. • Prices: slightly high but understandable given the location (expect around €5 per cake). • Service: cold, purely profit-driven, no warmth or care for hikers or human needs. Also, please know that we did not leave a single piece of trash outside of the designated bins. We respect nature and hiking culture. All waste went into the garbage can, exactly where it belongs. What makes this worse is that they are lying in their responses to other reviews, claiming people didn’t pay. How dare they? We paid every time we ordered. They just care about money and hiding the truth. So to all hikers and travelers: be careful. Don’t expect kindness from this place only business.

Sonnleiten is a restaurant that offers delicious food and stunning views. Customers rave about the burrata pizza, which they describe as excellent. The grill dishes, such as the ribeye and ribs, are also highly praised for their amazing flavors. Unlike typical BBQ ribs drowned in sauce, these are seasoned with salt, herbs, and pure smoky goodness. The prices at Sonnleiten are reasonable, and the ingredients used are locally sourced.

For day 3, we recommend exploring the east side side of town. Start the day off with Inizio sentiero per Malga Foresta, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Biotop Rasen Moor. All together, your day would be filled with about 5 hours of non-stop fun.

Located near Lago di Braies, there is an excellent dining option called Malga Foresta, also known as Grunwaldhutte. This mountain farm tavern is a hidden treasure that should not be missed. If you're a fan of breathtaking views and outdoor activities, this place is perfect for you. The hiking area surrounding the tavern offers stunning natural beauty with its crystal-clear water, pale stones, and well-maintained trails.
This is a small nice beach just next to the forest which opens up great views to the lake and the surrounding rocks. Great place for kids to interact with ducks and swans (passing by quite often). Pristine beauty, it is surreal. Takes about 1.15 min. from the parking lot considering the multiple stops you have along the way, otherwise it is much shorter.

Slightly more expense for similar things, but this is the only place we found things related to this lake, so picked up a couple of things. You can just browse through there or sit outside and watch people go by.

We travel across the world, already more than 20 countries/states, but we forgot to purchase fridge magnet when being in Lago di Braies. The seller (Roberto) was so kind to send 2 magnets via regular post, even if it was only 10 EUR order, travelling 1000 km. It seemed that the envelope might have got lost in the postal system, seller offered to help if the regular envelope did not come (our choice to use envelope). Finally, the envelope came with 2 non-damaged magnets. I recommend to use the shop. Customer is first at this shop, regardless of value of order!!!

Nice souvenir shop right next to the lake. They have lots of stickers to choose form which is what we like to collect for traveling. They don't really have lines in place so try to get a cashier when you can

Closed ať time listed on Google place results record. Shows to 1830, but at 1700 closed. December 2023. Lago Di Braies frozen, almost no people there.
David S — Google review
Overpriced magnets with pretty irrelevant figures but they just put the term “lago di braies” for no reason

Charming shop on the banks of the Lago di Braies. The shop assistants are friendly and very helpful. You're sure to find what you're looking for!

Chalet Lago di Braies

Chalet
Chalet Lago di Braies is a magnificent place that is absolutely worth visiting, whether in summer or winter. The breathtaking view and the opportunity to explore the trails on foot or by bike make it an ideal destination for nature lovers. Visitors should be prepared for cold weather and possible rain if they plan to hike or bike around the area. Additionally, while enjoying the beautiful scenery, visitors can also indulge in some tasty food at the chalet.
I reckoned this is the best hotel scenery I have ever stayed in my life. Stunning lake view, excellent good services restaurant and foods. We stayed in Chalet Lago Di Braies for three nights, therefore I have opportunity to walk around the lake a couple of times. The hotel itself, WiFi is weak, hot water is not hot enough.

Quick coffee fuel here - 2 euros per cup. Fast and espresso was nice and strong. Toilets available too.

Good food w/ a beautiful view! The process to order is quick, order at the pay station and then hand the receipt to the chef who cooks everything up fast. Had the chicken schnitzel which was delicious! Definitely recommend stopping here for lunch/snack

Terrible instructions and rude service.

(Translated by Google) Self-service bar-cafeteria suitable for a quick meal during a visit to Lake Braies, the portions are sufficiently generous and the dishes well prepared in relation to the price. There is usually a selection of pizzas and sandwiches available as a side dish to some hot meat-based dishes. Excellent desserts. Overall, recommended place. Too bad there aren't many tables inside. Ottimi i dolci. Nel complesso, locale consigliato. Peccato che i tavoli all'interno non siano molti.

(Translated by Google) I visited Braies to use the voucher I received when reserving parking lot number 4. The menu was written in several languages, but I couldn't translate it properly because the internet wasn't working well, so I ordered roughly, but it wasn't that delicious. The goulash tasted like high rice, and the sausage was salty.

Thank you Luca for your hospitality. The food is delicious. I felt the warmth of Italians in the cold Braies.

Malga Foresta, located near Lagundo, is home to the Forst Special Beer Brewery, which has been producing 700,000 hectolitres of beer annually since its establishment in 1857. The brewery offers a variety of beers including Luxus Light, Kronen, Felsenkeller, and a limited edition Christmas beer. The terrace can get quite busy during good weather and peak times but offers great food and helpful staff.
Spectacular place, away from the hordes of tourists. We had the schlutzkrapfen and polenta with wurst. Waiter was super friendly, toilet impeccable.

The food is very tasty , they also have a daily menu ( 2 types of dishes today). Having a lunch with such a picturesque view is an unusual experience. And of course , cows are everywhere 😉

A really nice hut about a 40-minute hike from Lago di Braies, set in a beautiful alpine pasture. The staff are friendly, the food arrived in under 5 minutes, and there are free restrooms _ surprisingly rare in the Dolomites. There's a spring to refill your water bottle. The food itself was decent, and overall it was a great stop on the way to Kaseralm Rifugio (which, unfortunately, was closed). Very glad we paused here.

A wonderful surprise hidden in the woods! (Don’t give up and keep walking) There are markers in the woods as no signal to check google maps. This resto serves amazingly delish food in huge quantity! We had some schnitzel and strudel, plus fresh flower juices, and they did not disappoint us at all. After a long walk in Lago, this is the perfect spot to dine and relax. Tip: Free unlimited spring water so you’ll get hydrated and ready for another hike.

A forest cabin where you can enjoy some good food and drinks, especially if you love lakes and mountain views. Friendly staff, excellent food and wine – all just a few hundred meters from Lago di Braies.

This small restaurant in South Tyrol is an absolute gem! Their regional cuisine is simply outstanding - every dish is full of flavor and authenticity. Moreover, the service here is top-notch, with quick and attentive staff. It's definitely worth a visit if you appreciate authentic flavors and excellent service!

After a little walk from the lake, we found this hut. We ordered some drink and Kaiser Schmarren (it was good but they really use too much of sugar). Prices acceptable for this location, the staff is friendly. And - something I can't understand in Dolomiti - here you can get the food over the day without any problems.

Tasty food, nice view, friendly staffs. If you are hungry after hiking, this place provides big portion! A river where children could play is a plus.
