Wakehurst, previously known as Wakehurst Palace, is a stunning National Trust-owned estate featuring a wild botanic garden and the renowned Millennium Seed Bank. Spanning over 500 acres, this West Sussex gem showcases diverse landscapes from around the world, such as Coates Wood with trees from Australasia and South America. As the sister site to Kew's Royal Botanic Gardens, Wakehurst offers free entry for National Trust members and boasts attractions like mazes and hammocks for kids.
The glorious ‘wild’ botanic counterpart to Kew Gardens in London, boasting in excess of 500 acres of diverse landscapes. Well worth a visit to see the impressive collection of plant life specimens and mature arboreal wonders, from mighty redwoods to English oaks and prehistoric wollemi pines. The Great Storm of 1987 decimated Loder's plantings, toppling 20,000 trees. Since then, Kew has redesigned the gardens to create a walk through the temperate woodlands of the world. The café is top notch serving a decent range of refreshments and the Wellcome Trust Millennium Seed Bank needs no introduction - a vital piece of infrastructure safeguarding nature for posterity. Do bear in mind the emphasis of this site is wild vegetation so an overtly curated garden feel (like Kew Gardens) isn't the mainstay. If you have a dog you'll only be able to walk them on the designated route, on a short lead, which nonetheless provides ample views and greenery to enjoy. There's also a field enclosure (near the seed bank) for letting dogs roam freely off their leads. The gift shop is okay, but you'll find the typical spenny National Trust knick knacks and paraphernalia lining the shelves. A higher quality selection would be preferable, rather than the rebranded generic products likely just imported from China in some considerable bulk and found at every Trust site from there to kingdom come. Public health note: I have reason to suspect they bake their potatoes in aluminium foil. This is a public health risk as aluminium is a known neurotoxin and can accumulate in the body.

Wakehurst botanical garden is a great place to take your dog(s) for a walk. There are several routes you can choose from, we usually take the long round trip. There are some no dog zones but there is plenty to explore where you can take your dog. There is a big field which is an off lead area for doggies, full of smells to sniff. If you come without dogs, I recommend visiting the mansion, the water gardens and the wetland walk around the lake. We have been here in different seasons but there is always something to see or a different route to explore. Highly recommended. Great facilities as well, plenty of parking, toilets in different places and two cafes to choose from.

A stunning wild botanical garden. Really awe inspiring and thoughtfully planted. Fun for children and adults, my daughter enjoyed the mud kitchen and having fun amongst the trees. Cafe was quite expensive so will bear that in mind for our next visit. Plenty of spaces to have a picnic.

My daughter & I hadn't been to Wakehurst for quite a long time. I had forgotten just how beautiful it is here. We walked farther than usual and got to enjoy some of the most beautiful parts. Although be warned, when the map says it's a steep hill, it's truly steep 🤣 We certainly got out workout in!! The staff are lovely too, very helpful. It was reasonably busy for a Sunday but not overcrowded at all. We'll definitely return soon no doubt.
Clair H — Google review
Great botanical garden with a variety of views. I would highly recommend visiting the Himalayan glade and pond. Do be aware that the blooms vary quite a lot between seasons, so you may not get to see the same as my images. Good restaurant with reasonable options and prices on site. Ice cream van with good selection too.

Wakehurst Mansion (also known as Wakehurst Place) is a beautiful historic estate. The mansion was built in 1590 by Sir Edward Culpeper. It showcases classic Elizabethan architecture, including a grand stone facade and mullioned windows. Wakehurst is managed by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. It’s sometimes called “Kew’s wild botanic garden” and is a hub for plant science and conservation. One of the most significant features is the Millennium Seed Bank, the world’s largest wild plant seed conservation project. It aims to bank seeds from 25% of the world’s flora. The estate has over 500 acres of diverse landscapes, including temperate woodlands, formal gardens, and ornamental lakes. During World War II, Wakehurst was used as a refuge and later served as a base for Canadian troops. Although Kew manages it, Wakehurst is owned by the National Trust, blending historic preservation with scientific innovation. Its scenic beauty and historic architecture have made it a filming location for various productions. We enjoyed our visit. Staff were all friendly and nice. We were told that refurbishment is ongoing, and the mansion will be accessible around August time. My only gripe is the parking fee. £8 for just under 3 hours isn't great value for National Trust members.
Shame N — Google review
This sister to Kew Gardens is a fine place to spend a few hours wandering around the wooded estate and the attractive small mansion house. Notwithstanding the importance of the scientific and conservation carried out by the Millenium Seedbank, for many visitors the main attractions are the walking trails through the over 500 acre wooded countryside, featuring some of the world's most magnificent trees. These include a substantial number of the world's most massive tree, the giant Californian Redwood, which, despite their relative youth, have already ready reached an impressive 36 meters, and, not to be missed, are the weirdly drooping freaks of the same species. Children up to 16yoa have free entry, adults are £18.50 and young people are 50% of the adult rate. Car parking additional. Hot and cold food at the Stables Kitchen Restaurant and cafes. It is not cheap, but it is a great day out for the whole family.
David P — Google review
The seed bank was very informative and high quality. Loved the walks along the trees, don't forget to do the Rocky walk. There are quite a few magnificent sequoiadendron towering above all the other trees. The smaller botanical gardens are really nice . But: the food is just not great. We had our quiche cold. The sweet and sour pork had perhaps 2 or 3 pieces of tasteless chewy pork in it, with some mushy broccoli on the side. Totally overpriced.

Saint Hill Manor, located in East Grinstead, is a historic site with a rich backstory dating back to 1567. The Jacobean house on the property was completed in 1733 and has been meticulously restored. Visiting the Saint Hill Manor is like stepping into a living piece of history. From the moment you arrive, you're greeted with the elegance of Georgian architecture surrounded by peaceful, meticulously kept grounds. The staff are incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the manor’s past residents, including its ties to the Maharajah of Jaipur and L. Ron Hubbard. Each room feels like a time capsule that is beautifully preserved with authentic furnishings, artworks and personal items that create a rich experience. What stands out most is the attention to detail and care taken in presenting the history in an accessible, engaging way. Whether you're interested in architecture, heritage, or the lives of the influential figures who lived here, there’s something captivating around every corner. The grounds are equally lovely. A perfect place for a peaceful stroll or some quiet reflection after the tour. It’s clear that Saint Hill Manor isn’t just a historic site, but a living, breathing part of cultural history. This is a hidden gem well worth discovering.

I recently visited Saint Hill Manor and Castle, and it was a truly enchanting experience. This beautiful 18th-century manor house has been meticulously maintained, retaining much of its original charm despite having had many diverse owners over the years. The attention to preserving its historical integrity is evident in every room and hallway. The gardens and lake were equally impressive. The lush, well-kept gardens provided a serene backdrop for a leisurely stroll, and the lake added an extra touch of tranquillity to the surroundings. It was a delightful place to unwind and enjoy nature's beauty. Overall, Saint Hill Manor and Castle is a splendid destination for anyone interested in history, architecture, and picturesque landscapes.

Nestled on the outskirts of Ashdown Forest, The Old Dunnings Mill is a charming 15th-century pub that offers a delightful blend of British and European cuisine. This inviting venue serves breakfast and afternoon tea, making it an ideal spot for any time of day. Guests can enjoy live entertainment while savoring award-winning beers in the spacious garden or cozy up by the open log fires inside.
This pub/restaurant is excellent. It’s spacious, with cosy nooks and crannies as well as a large outside area. The building is picturesque, prettied up with flowers and hanging baskets, especially near the entrance. This area features a water wheel and a flowing stream. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, and the food is very tasty. We visited from outside the area due to the consistently good reviews, and we weren’t disappointed. It was a Friday night in August, so quite busy, but this didn’t affect the excellent service. Parking did seem limited, but we managed to find a space.

Nice setting for a pub, always space inside and space in the car park. Not the biggest selection of beers, but enough if you're only popping in. Had a late lunch here with the family the other day - food was great! Unfortunately not everything on the menu was available and the wait time was quite long. But overall, a good enough experience!

Nestled at the top of East Grinstead's bustling High Street, The Ship Inn is a charming pub that has stood the test of time. Recently refurbished, it beautifully blends traditional English pub vibes with a touch of modern elegance. Known for its delightful menu featuring classic dishes like Sunday roasts, this local favorite offers a cozy atmosphere perfect for unwinding after shopping or enjoying a leisurely meal.
Our server, Charlie, was polite, welcoming and informative. Andy, at the bar on our arrival, was friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious, not pub grub but genuinely fresh, perfectly cooked and full of flavour. We are from the set menu and are already planning a return visit.

Slow service, only 2 staff on duty early Sunday afternoon. Roasts not very hot and chicken legs rather than any breast meat but tasty gravy. Other table were given the wrong order and asked for their meals to be heated.

Popped in for a family Sunday roast after a trip on the bluebell. Despite it being quite early on in the lunch service, the food was great, the service was even better. Loads of options, great kids menu and a lovely vegan roast. Highly recommended!

We never stayed overnight. We only had the food, and it wasn't all that good. We had several different meals, the fish and chips, was plenty. However, there was something missing from it as it was bland even though it had mushy peas, tartar sauce, and curry sauce. The curry sauce was really nice, but as I said before, it was bland, chips were hard, and fish batter was burnt, peas and tartar sauce had no taste, thank goodness for ketchup. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, overall, it was a nice place, the atmosphere was good but, unfortunately we wouldn't eat there again

Sunday early evening. Whole pub being run by two overwhelmed staff. Food took an hour to arrive - starter and mains brought together. Vegetables cold. Pub empty apart from 3 tables. Has gone downhill and will not be returning

Right first of all the ship inn, sick name not a generic name. I walked in and got greeted by a member off staff straight away I believe his name was Dylan. He was very polite, friendly and kind. I ordered a Guinness what was Poured Perfectly and a Pepperoni pizza which was unreal best pizza I have had in a long time. And the beer garden is one of the best I have seen the different levels offering different Atmosphere Of environment. Like I like the very bottom with the heating lamps and the wonky tables. It's a mood and I am all for it. So in a hole I would highly recommend the Ship inn and if you see a tall man with a mullet and a tash He will sort you out along with all the staff tbf I haven't got one bad thing to say. Everyone is just lovely in there, good staff good food good times.

National Trust - Standen House and Garden is a stunning Arts and Crafts Movement house located on the outskirts of town. The house, built in the 1890s by architect Philip Webb, is renowned for its William Morris wallpapers, textiles, and contemporary fittings. Visitors can explore the formal gardens, woodland estate, and enjoy daily events such as sculpture exhibitions in the summer. The house celebrates its 50th anniversary with colorful decorations from designs of the 70s, making it a cheerful sight.
Visited the garden with my dog. Really friendly staff and lovely grounds. It's also great, if you're on your own like me, to be able to take your dog in the cafe and shop to buy things as some sites do not allow this. Only thing I would say is it would be nice to see more NT sites bringing back garden only admittance charges. £18 for the house and garden is good value but with parking not included it's allot if you are only visiting the garden for an hour.

What a beautiful spot! Whilst the house is lovely, and the William Morris design great to see, the focus here really is the gardens and surrounding land. So calm and peaceful, the perfect spot to be on a sunny day. The staff were so friendly too! Even finding a treat and offering water to our dog - dogs are allowed in the gardens, except for the kitchen one, and a separate indoor area to the main cafe - which offered great food at relatively reasonable prices too.

Decided to visit on a very warm Sunday Morning, arrived at 10am and already plenty of people arriving, Decided to just look around the gardens and ground as weather so good. Walk through the woods seeing the bluebells, then walk around around the gardens, views were amazing, The cafe was lovely with outside tables, gets busy especially around lunch time. Book shop was good and found a few books to buy. definitely a great place to visit especially if weather great.

Nestled in the rolling hills of West Sussex, Standen House and Garden is a celebration of the Arts and Crafts movement. Designed by architect Philip Webb between 1892 and 1894 for the Beale family, this Grade I listed home is a living showcase of William Morris’s nature-inspired designs. Every room is adorned with his wallpapers, textiles, and furnishings, immersing visitors in the rich aesthetic of the era. There are also rabbit toys hidden throughout the house to keep the younger visitors interested in trying to find them all. The surrounding 12-acre garden, lovingly restored to Margaret Beale’s original vision, offers a tapestry of seasonal delights. In spring, highlights include the vibrant rhododendrons, camellias, and azaleas. The gardens are beautifully maintained. Beyond the formal gardens, there are over 100 acres of estate to be explored including ancient bluebell woods and meadows, Standen offers a harmonious blend of art, nature, and history, providing an enriching experience for all who visit and I will definitely be returning again and again.

Did a wine tasting tour with some friends today. Can definitely recommend, learnt a few things, tried a few wines, had a great lunch. Watched a few steam trains go by! Lesley was our tour guide, very knowledgeable and made it interesting and Julie was marvellous too, helping my Father in Law in from the car park. Kingscote has a very friendly team, our favourite vineyard. We often come here for lunch and a glass, can definitely recommend their Ploughman's. Been back again today, still marvellous!

We were treated to a wine tasting with lunch experience by a close friend and what a fabulous gift it was. The wine tour was conducted by the very lovely Charlotte who was very knowledgeable about Kingscote but also really keen to hear about other peoples knowledge and experience of wine. The wines we tasted as we enjoyed our tour were all very good and it was really interesting to hear about the history of Kingscote. The lunch we had at the end of the tasting tour was excellent- fresh ingredients and just what we all needed. The staff team all seem to enjoy their work and their enthusiasm is infectious. Thank you for a really lovely day in an intimate vineyard that we will definitely be returning to.

We went to the Kingscote Estate Vineyard for my dad’s birthday which also happened to be St George’s Day. We have been to a number of English Vineyards and this was as lovely to visit as we had hoped. The main building is an old barn which hosts the shop, toilets and cafe area where we had a very nice lunch (including some last minute dietary requirements which they managed to take on). There is also an upstairs seated area which we didn’t get to but looked very nice. The weather was wet but we still went in the winery tour which was very good. The Guide was excellent and I’ll hopefully update this with his name (that’s on me & my bad memory). Even though we’ve been on a few before it is always interesting to hear the history of the vineyard, how they are doing and what they are working on with the styles of wine being made. In this case, as well as traditional method sparkling wines they are making a charmat style sparkling wine (which was fantastic - ‘Harlot’). The other thing to mention about the Kingscote Estate is that it is also near the Bluebell Line Steam Railway, which passes by the bottom of one field and you may be able to walk between the two.

Went to see the iconic Fury's at this venue. Intimate atmosphere and splendid evening. Bar was efficient and reasonably priced, seats a little cramped for those with longer limbs, but cosiness added to ambience. Parking was adjacent and again reasonable in price. Overall a lovely little theatre with helpful staff and would definitely go again.

Great food,service and atmosphere

Turned up without a booking on a Thursday night, it seemed a problem initially as they were busy, but there were a few tables free 🤷🏼‍♂️ Service was good, no complaints, the food, however, was so so, it always used to be good here. I'm not so sure about the chef, all our dishes looked the same with the same or very similar sauce, the lamb was tough, the chicken a bit dry, the prices are up, although this seems standard now for restaurants.

Takeaway ordered. Packed full of flavour & fresh tasting with large portions. An excellent meal.

After a couple of visits in the restaurant and after a second takeaway tonight, I’m very impressed. The food is always fresh and the portions are generous. Recommended.

First time getting a takeout from them, 5 stars! I used to use Velvety Ginger which sadly closed down so have been on the hunt for my next “go to” Curry place. Think I’ve found it 👍
Gavin W — Google review
This place is hit or miss. The service is usually very good, but can be painfully slow on busy days. The food is below average. My usual curry is a chicken jalfrezi. Unfortunately, the chicken is overcooked, so can be quite tough. The onion bhajis were like crisps and very small. They do need to up their game when it comes to the food. I'll be going to their competitors in Felbridge on my next curry night
Brian M — Google review
Beautiful venue, location is great. Food is fairly good. Service is a mixed bag — some waiters are friendly and welcoming, one or two are abrupt and borderline rude.

I really enjoyed this place. The food was great. People are great and really nice (but then all English seem very nice to me!) The tea was exceptional as well. The shop was very well kept and really nice.
Danan D — Google review
It’s a large cafe and it’s a shame they didn’t have a kitchen with an oven and stove. So we couldn’t have anything heated up because they only have a microwave. So I had to have a salad and my boyfriend had very strange bread that was like thin pitta bread. I liked the coleslaw and the bizarre snotty textured French vinaigrette looked like it had chilli flakes in it but it was ok tasting I just hope it didn’t have rapeseed oil, as that was modified in the 70’s and the pollen makes me sneeze so I know I’m allergic to it. It was a chilled place. But it was a shame they didn’t have an electric stove like in other cafes. Because microwaves destroy the molecules of the food or liquids. Just feed your plant or animal and you will see the plant die and the dog won’t touch it. I liked the decor and that it’s dog friendly. Looks like they had a good selection of coffees and teas but I don’t drink tap water Dave had normal tea.
Maureen B — Google review
Soup of the day was the M&S tomato and lentil soup. (I know as I use to eat it every week at one point) the avo and eggs was super plain, no flavour, Really basic. Prices were extortionate for how poor the food quality was. There was bizarrely 6 young serving staff for a very small cafe that perhaps needed 2.
Jamie T — Google review
Its interesting place to go for having tea or coffe or lunch. It’s small cafe on high street, behind the monument. Its very easy to get here. We park our car at waitrose and walk 3 minutes. The food selection were limited but all look interesting. Top floor always busy so we went to basement area which is Ok. The staff were friendly and we’ve got 50% discount as we went here on tuesday. Soup, salad and quiche was delicious. Cafe also provide hand sanitation on each corner and setup table at basement with social distance.
Desyana S — Google review
Really cute little book in the east grinstead high street! Really chill vibe with super friendly and amenable staff. I was expecting a cafe with pastries and small bits and bobs so was surprised to be able to get a full on breakfast. Great tea selection and really good food too with decent portions for the price. I had a dirty chai latte as well as pancakes with maple syrup and bacon rashers. They seemed happy to make changes to orders within reason as well which was really nice of them. The whole experience took no more than a half hour but didn't feel rushed in any way. All in all great place and would recommend if you're after a quick stop breakfast and lunch.
Jaimun N — Google review
We were a group of friends and we booked afternoon tea. All very tasty, really nicely presented, and we were given one of the cosy basement rooms to ourselves so we were able to chat and relax. Thank you.

Jenna made the absolute best Almond Latte I have had in town. Head there and ask for her! Also, their GF, Dairy Free and Vegan Bakewell tastes amazing and better for us. Try that too!
Samantha B — Google review
Prebooked for a birthday treat as vegan afternoon tea was offered. 40 mins after arrival I was asked if I ate jam (really?) and what I would like in my sandwiches (despite already saying in a phone call from the cafe this morning). I suggest a range of basic items, all things already on the menu. A further 20 mins and my depressing sarnies arrived, consisting of humous and avacado (separately). The chunky salad was added after I asked if they could add some TO the sandwiches 🤭. I asked if the bread was stale or toasted and was told it was GF. Why GF? "Because you're vegan". 🤦‍♀️. Served with GF cakes and clotted cream 🤪. Staff urgently need training in this before someone with serious allergies takes a bite. Also attached is a pic of the cakes my family shared - some look straight out a supermarket tub? Appreciated new sarnies offered and bill being wiped so thank you.

Fish and chips takeaway
If you're in search of a delightful fish and chips experience, look no further than Harbour Fish Bar. This charming eatery has become a weekly highlight for many locals, including those who appreciate the perfect child-sized portion that brings joy to their day. The fish is always fresh and flavorful, encased in a crispy batter that complements perfectly cooked chips.
Very good fish and chip shop. Always enjoy the fish whether cod or haddock. Better parking than any of the other fish and chips shops in East Grinstead - like to make a quick getaway so food does not go cold!
EG B — Google review
We were disappointed when we ordered takeaway fish and chips last night. It was soggy and chips looks just reheated. It so expensive with the price we paid for. It wasn’t the same anymore. We are now put off going there.
C P — Google review
Use to order quite a bit from here and the food was always really nice. By far my favourite chips and cod. Recently not to sure what’s changed but ordered last week and the chips were cooked in old oil, thought maybe it was a one off so ordered again but this time 90% of the chips were cooked in old oil and the cod was just quite dry. Ordered a large cod and looked like it was a small. It’s a shame but think I’ll be looking for another chippy and maybe try one last time in a few months. The employees that deliver are very well mannered and friendly.
Kevin J — Google review
Amazing service, anything I asked for they sorted, no problems, the staff were very friendly and polite, food was amazing, All for £7.50
Darren F — Google review
Ordered multiple times from deliveroo so can't comment on the atmosphere. That is the only negative and is to be expected given being a takeaway/delivery order. Otherwise, this is the best fish and chip shop I've ever been too, 100%. My GF who is from hove and has been to too many fish and chip shops to count has said that this is far and above all expectations, especially being such a hidden gem. I've tried the skate, place and haddock, and they have always been fresh and flaky and the batter has always been proper crispy and not greasy at all, which surprises me because I got it through delivery! Chips are not greasy at all and always been very consistent and with that fish and chips shop aura! For me and my GF the stand out by far is the curry sauce; if you order from harbour fish bar (which you should) you HAVE to get the curry sauce. I don't know how they make it but it goes perfectly with the fish and chips: it's perfectly seasoned and only slightly sweet (I don't prefer the overly sweet kind you find a lot) and as a sauce-fiend I have to have at least 2 every order (but 1 curry sauce is still generous). The mushy peas are really well textured and not just gloopy slop in other fish and chips shops, only downside is they would benefit with a little salt, but that is my taste! If you ever find yourself in the strange, small town of east-grinstead and need some proper traditional British food, go here!
Zack M — Google review
Another great huge order for an office lunch. Linda does an excellent job packing all the food perfectly in named boxes. Never a mistake made.

One of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure to visit. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food is plentiful and tasty. Large potions - excellent value for money. Our party all enjoyed their meals. Baklava for dessert which was delicious, and the evening ended off with coffee & cream. A delightful evening. Highly Recommend this restaurant 👍🏻

Had an absolutely wonderful dinner at Rocca Mediterranean Kitchen! The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. From the appetizers to the main course, every dish was perfectly cooked and full of authentic Mediterranean flavors. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were attentive and friendly throughout the evening. Highly recommend for anyone craving a delicious Mediterranean meal at East Grinstead

This was a recommendation from our waiter at another restaurant- so of course we had to try it. It did not disappoint. The place was packed but they seated us in no time. The food was superbly prepared. We got the grilled meat for two and could have just eaten the third course and been full. I very bit of meat was tender and flavorful. I don’t know what they did to the shredded carrots - but yes please. Definitely recommend

Fabulous restaurant and one of the best places in town. My husband and I come here regularly, it's one of our top spots to visit. Excellent and delicious food. Nice serving sizes (they don't skimp at all) and good service with a wonderful atmosphere.

We had a 2 course meal yesterday. £14.95. What a delicious meal. Thank you. Note: Council, you need to tidy up the street, weeds n dirt don't make for pleasant outdoor dining experience.

Vibrant spot serving authentic Mediterranean/Turkish flavors—juicy lamb güveç and fresh mezes steal the show. Cocktails are a highlight, service warm even on busy nights. Cozy historic vibe, solid value. Minor quibble: occasional staff fatigue. A town gem!

Delcious and the best marinated food ever. Recommend the mix grill and grill trio fish. Delicate hand crafted cocktails and the baklava for desert ✨

Had a wonderful dinner at Rocca mediterranean Kitchen. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a modern yet cosy feel that made it perfect for an evening out. The food was excellent – fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. I had veg moussaka, and it was cooked perfectly. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, which made the whole experience even better. Prices were fair for the quality, and it felt like great value. A lovely spot for dinner, whether for a casual evening or a special occasion. I’ll definitely be coming back and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Bluebell Railway - (East Grinstead Station)

Heritage railroad
Railway services
Bluebell Railway in East Grinstead is a captivating journey back in time, where dedicated volunteers ensure visitors are well-informed and cared for. The Shed at Sheffield Park houses fascinating trains that can be explored up close, offering an immersive experience. Riding on the steam trains is a delightful experience, showcasing the extensive restoration efforts put into stations, locomotives, and tracks over the years.
Fantastic day out on the steam train. All the staff are top notch and were very friendly and knowledgeable. I thought it was expensive but after talking to the ticket conductor about the price of coal and maintenance of the train it's actually a fair price.
Benomaly ( — Google review
Heritage railway, well worth a visit. This station is next to mainline so accessible by service train. Also good bus link but no car parking on site. Has basic facilities but other stations on line more elaborate. Plenty of parking at Sheffield Park station. Friendly staff. Good day out.
Mark T — Google review
The Bluebell Railway, beginning at East Grinstead, offers a nostalgic and beautifully curated journey through the Sussex countryside, powered by lovingly preserved steam locomotives. From the moment you step onto the platform, you're transported to another era—complete with heritage signage, costumed volunteers, and the unmistakable scent of coal smoke in the air. The ride itself is smooth and utterly enchanting. The vintage carriages are meticulously restored, and each station along the line—from Horsted Keynes to Sheffield Park—feels like a living museum. Sheffield Park, in particular, is a highlight, with a fascinating museum, working locomotive sheds, and a delightful café offering traditional fare like cream teas and sausage rolls. The attention to historical detail is exceptional throughout, and the passion of the volunteers really shines. Their knowledge and enthusiasm add immense value to the experience. Special events like 1940s weekends, steam galas, and Santa Specials make repeat visits a joy. At around 45 minutes each way, the journey is long enough to feel immersive but never drags. And with East Grinstead’s mainline connections, it’s a straightforward day trip from London or the South East. In short, the Bluebell Railway is one of Britain’s finest heritage attractions. Whether you're a steam buff or simply after a unique and relaxing day out, this heritage line delivers charm, history, and beauty in equal measure.
Mark J — Google review
Shared location with main line services makes it easy to visit without a car. Sainsburys supermarket across the road for snacks but there is also a restored dining carriage for cold drinks and sandwiches opposite the ticket office. The is a self help bookstore containing a vast array of second hand railway publications at cheap prices payable at the booking office. Bluebell run every hour or so, a trip into town is possble.
Mike D — Google review
Brilliant day out immersed in a time gone by. Thanks to all the volunteers that take the time to ensure everyone is educated and looked after. The Shed at Sheffield Park is full of interesting Trains and you can get up close and as personal as you wish. The running train drivers allow the next generation a minute on the foot plate, all good fun and appreciated. Thank you.
Brian H — Google review
Had an excellent day out with three children under seven on a beautiful spring day. Staff were all dressed authentically and were great sources of information on the trains, equipment and the stations. The coaches have been lovingly restored, there was one coach which had boxes of Lego for the children on each table. Would definitely recommend for children and adults alike. If you are interested in the age of steam or simply love Thomas the Tank Engine, it is a delight.
Andy H — Google review
Riding on the steam trains is a wonderful experience. There has been so much work done over the years to restore the stations, locomotives and track. A day at the railway is highly recommend.
Susan B — Google review

Va-nak-kam East-Grinstead is a hidden gem that offers authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. The maitre d' is friendly and helpful, and the food is made with coconut milk, making it dairy-free. The menu has plenty of options for vegetarians, and the dishes are delightful. The ambiance is great, the service splendid, and the food authentic.

What. A. Night! I’m honestly at a loss for words, this experience was beyond incredible! Check it out our plate !!! 📸 ⏬️ Let me start by saying… I’m not a fan of spicy food. At all. But WOW!!!!! THEY seriously know what they’re doing. I went for the medium spice, and it was absolute perfection: flavorful, balanced, and surprisingly addictive. We had such a beautiful, unforgettable time. Every bite, every moment was a joy. And don’t just take my word for it, the photos say it all. Let me show you… Note: a well.deserve night me and husband. Thansk to all of you chefs and waitresses ♡ made our night.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Krish is front of house and was warm, friendly, great with recommendations for food and quietly attentive. His brother Dino is an amazing chef who was also serving the delicious fresh dishes. We are planning to visit Sri Lanka and he chatted to us about it and has strengthened our desire to go there. We visited the restaurant after seeing the 5 star reviews on trip advisor and we’re so glad that we did. We don’t live in the area but would go out of our way to come down here again just to visit this fabulous place . It’s cosy, nicely buzzy, Sri Lankan music playing softly in the background. Would be great for families, couples and friends. The food which I can’t begin to describe was out of this world. See pictures for beautiful food. Strongly recommend if you love freshly cooked flavourful food. The veg rolls and aubergine curry in particular are to die for…

Food generally tasty and service good. Atmosphere improved when few more people arrived. Had to ask for a teaspoon for my tea. Could be more generous with dips that go with starters. Tiny bowls. Two of the dips with the Dosas a bit bland. Very little chicken in chicken dosa. Other than that very good.
Suzanne B — Google review
The food was delicious and the fact you are asked how spicy you want your dish indicates everything is cooked from fresh. It certainly tasted that way. Super friendly, attentive yet gentle service. Relaxed atmosphere. Very reasonably priced. Went on a Friday night with a couple of girlfriends and it was full. It obviously has a good local reputation.

Lovely and tasty food.. lots of options for Meat, vege & vegan eaters! Highly recommend as they will vary the spice level to whatever you want, friendly staff to guide you across the dish options. Also good cake for money for the quality & portion size

Had a fabulous evening with a group of 12 tonight at this restaurant. We shared various dishes for starters and for the mains and it was a wonderful culinary experience. The food was delicious all round. The staff were super helpful and friendly too. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and comfortable. I will definitely go back and I highly recommend it! And just to mention it .... the car park across the road was great too as we only had to pay to 8pm and it was free after that. 👌 🙂

We’ve never tried Sri Lankan food and I can honestly say, I’m so glad we came here for our first experience! The food was absolutely delicious! We were very full but still couldn’t help trying to squeeze more in! We will definitely be returning! It was also nice to not be rushed through eating and was a nice, relaxed atmosphere. Really looking forward to going back again soon!

History Museums
East Grinstead Museum offers free entry and is staffed by helpful and informative individuals. The museum covers a wide range of topics, from dinosaur discoveries to the town's history, industries, people, and its pioneering hospital. It also delves into the role East Grinstead played in WWII and features a section on local art and artists. St. Swithuns church is an iconic landmark located near the old high street.
It's a really interesting museum worth a visit. It's close to high street and it's free. A good part of the exhibition is about Sir Archibald McIndoe, the Guinea Pig Club. This club was formed by members of the RAF in World War II, whose burns were treated at the Queen Victoria Hospital by pioneering surgeon.

For Mums with children very interesting & interactive visit to local museum. A great place to be educated about East-Grinstead through the years (peaty there are only one museum, we love to go to the museums, as the result we have been hear many times). The war & the burns patients "guinea pig club". What is great I found this year - for half-term they organize an amazing activities for kids and history walk. Free entrance no parking but car parks very near.
Yana S — Google review
Excellent little museum. Very good information about the Guinea pig club and famous people from the town. Very helpful volunteers.
Jasmine G — Google review
A very special place, especially for family members of the Guinea Pig Club. The volunteers were particularly lovely and helpful.
Lynne H — Google review
A lovely experience at the East Grinstead museum. I went on one of their monthly tours, with particular interest to the medical side. However, I found the town historical side particularly fascinating as well, as it opened up my hidden interest in medieval economy. Much to the annoyance of my female healthcare colleagues I now know thanks to McIndoe that the perfect cure for a gentleman who has faced war is a lovely pint of his majesty's finest (McIndoe had a beer keg on the ward). The only feedback I do have is that I probably would've spent a bit more in the gift shop if there were more local souveniers. A reprint of the guinea pig club magazine or perhaps an A3 laminate poster would have been good enough. But if you were to take it further, I would be selling remanufactured copies of the McIndoe Scissors.
Josh S — Google review
A small museum showing local history and Mc Indoe and his Guinea pigs. A must for plastic surgeons, the exhibit is small. Don’t miss the amc Indoe statue in town

A small museum with friendly volunteers. Of interest to me was the exhibition of the Guinea Pig Club, the groundbreaking treatment developed by Sir Archibald McIndoe and the Queen Victoria Hospital where severely burnt aircrew were treated. Its free to visit and there is the opportunity to make a small donation to ensure the story Guinea Pig Club is told.

Recently moved to East Grinstead, i ordered a set meal B for 2, some grilled pork dumplings and fish with ginger & srpring onion, very professionally cooked, food very nice and and good, especially the grilled pork dumplings are juicy in the mouth, will definitely want to try again.

We ordered a Chinese takeaway this evening, It all went in the bin. What an absolute catastrophic thrown together mess, turned up practically cold, Do not order from here, it looks awful and tastes worse. If you do decide to order from here, I strongly advise against ordering the duck pancake rolls because all that’s in them is chopped up onion and a shred of what is supposed to be a bit of duck. The ribs didn’t taste right at all , very tough and over dry and after one bite I could tell they tasted pretty odd, couldn’t even get something as simple as chips correct, wet and soggy and cold in the middle. Absolutely disgraceful. Not one dish we ordered was satisfactory. The one star is for the broccoli dish that was a begrudged pass, not great but not as awful as the other dishes although it still went in the bin after tasting it as by this point I was put off. Complete Waste of money.

I’ve never had over cooked noodles from a Chinese before but:.. Noodles were over cooked, was all mushy & far too much onion. Satay sauce taste like syrup it was so sweet. Sweet and sour prawn balls was all batter and only a tiny bit of prawn
Jack B — Google review
Worst chow mein I've ever had. These noodles looked like they have been resurrected. They were flavourless with absolutely no sauce. Annoyed as they were meant to be the main part of my families dinner tonight. Having already sat down to eat dinner the last thing we wanted was to stop everyone eating and drive back out to get replacements. Had to stop my child eating the prawn crackers as they were stale and tasted like plastic. We ordered other stuff which was obviously made fresh to order and was absolutely fine. I won't be returning though as I won't let my family eat from somewhere that clearly stores some of their food far too long.

If you're looking for food that’s absolutely god-tier but comes with a price tag that’ll have you reconsidering your life choices, then New Jade Evergreen is the place for you! The food here is out of this world—especially the king prawns with lentil soup and chives. That dish alone is worth selling your soul for, and I’m pretty sure Chef Ping has mastered some kind of culinary magic. Every bite was bursting with flavor, and you can tell he’s got some serious kitchen wizardry going on. But let me tell you, when the bill came... let’s just say I wasn't prepared. I was so blown away by the food, I forgot to check the prices beforehand, and by the end of the meal, I realized I could barely cover half of it! Things got a little awkward, and before I knew it, I found myself in the back of the restaurant helping Chef Ping wash dishes to cover the rest. Yep, you read that right! As embarrassed as I was, I can’t deny that the punishment fit the crime—I’d do it all over again just to taste that incredible food. The staff were fantastic, super friendly and understanding despite my "little" mishap. But man, if you’re going to eat here, make sure your wallet is ready for the ride. A huge shout-out to Chef Ping for his incredible culinary knowledge and the team for the top-tier service. Just, you know... bring your credit card, or maybe two

I went here over a dinner and it was bit of a mixed experience. The service, friendliness of the staff & the cleanliness of the dining area & toilets are up to standards. It seems like this place is popular takeaway / delivery restaurant, so you will frequently hear the noise of phone ringing and the voice of the person who is answering, which can be bit of annoying. Anyway, we ordered a special fried riced, soft fried noodles and crispy shredded chicken portion. The fried rice and the soft fried noodles is incredibly delicious but unfortunately the portion is way too small for that price. The shredded chicken seems to be overcooked and it doesnt taste chicken. But, it was still tasty. It seems like this restaurant has a very high price category for a such a small sized portions. I believe it is not really worth it. As soon as we got to the restaurant they asked whether we need prawn crackers and we said yes. Later we found out it wasn't complementary and that was in the bill. There are few other Chinese restaurants around this place and I will be trying them next time. Thank you.

Best Chinese in the area,I have lived in Beijing, China for 6 years and have eaten a lot of Chinese food. The best Chinese food is only in New Evergreen in East Grinstead. Great food.

Pizza restaurant
Pizza Express is a delightful chain pizzeria that offers a relaxed dining atmosphere where chefs don striped t-shirts and skillfully toss handmade pizzas. Guests rave about the friendly and attentive staff, making every visit feel special. The menu has expanded to include a separate vegan selection, featuring thin and crispy dough without the typical coconut flavor found in many vegan cheeses. Families appreciate the interactive experience for kids, like making their own pasta, which encourages even picky eaters to enjoy their meals.
My first visit was very good. Polite staff and quick service. The starter, main and pizza express ale were all fantastic. A very spacious and clean restaurant, not too busy on my mid-week visit. No faults whatsoever, I'll definitely fight here again.

Unfortunately, ordering from the East Grinstead Pizza Express was, once again, disappointing. The additional toppings on the pizza were barely there (about a square inch of goat cheese over a big, Romana La Reine pizza, although we were made to pay extra); the cheesy garlic bread was minuscule, with a small dollop of cheese in the middle; as for the Hawaiian dough bites, that we were looking forward to trying for the first time, they were the disappointment of the century! A smaller than one square centimetre piece of bacon over the entire portion and a crumb of about two millimetres of cold, nasty pineapple… The rest was… acceptable, but lacking love, I guess… Next time, we will go back to the Oxted Pizza Express, that provides an a lot better quality and shows more respect towards us, as clients, by doing so…

We came on a quiet Tuesday to celebrate our friends birthday, and everything was excellent. Maria the manager and karima our server were both lovely and so welcoming, brilliant service, delicious food and we absolutely would come again! Made our night.

Haven’t been to this Pizza Express branch since before the pandemic so it was great to see that they now have a separate vegan menu! The vegan pizzas were great too - dough was nice, thin and crispy and cheese didn’t have that strange coconut smell the mainstream vegan cheese normally has. They also let my 4 year old make her own tomato pasta which she really enjoyed and actually made her eat more of it than she usually would. The polenta chips (vegetarian) were super delicious. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming so overall we had a lovely dining experience.

Wow what an amazing experience from the minute we arrived. A lovely lady [Deputy Manager] from Hungary was the most friendly, professional and helpful person I’ve ever come across in any of your restaurants. Customer service at its highest level. Improvements have been made since the last time we went. Thank you.

My niece had a 5th birthday party here for 18 children! They all made their own pizzas. The staff were so friendly and everyone had a fantastic time! I would highly recommend ☺️ xxx

We both had a Romana pizza for lunch and by downloading the Pizza Express app we were able to get a 2 for one offer giving over £12 discount. Enjoyed the huge pizza as well as the value for money deal. Will return.

As Italian and celiac, I had the best gluten-free crispy goat cheese & caramelised onions pizza I have ever had!! Lovely Birthday celebration and amazing desserts inclusive of coffee… staff super kind and helpful. Really recommend it! Simo x

Millie and Sam wonderful, good value, lots of sport on TV, didn't try food. Toilets good

It's ok, nothing really great and nothing really bad. I would say its a sports bar really, so go watch footyvwhen in town. However, it is in a super town centre, East Grinstead is well worth a visit.

Stopped by en route to our destination on the coast to catch a premier league game on BT sport. Friendly staff and very decent food including a first-rate sausage and mash. Lots of dogs in evidence.

I was part of a band that played at The Crown - the landlord was incredibly welcoming to us and gave a loads of space to set up in (and we did get quite a few dancing!). The space is great, awesome staff and the TVs huge and great for sports events. I didn't get to try the food but I heard such good things about it I'll come back sometime soon and try it out!

Visited The Crown on Tuesday for drinks and lunch. Plenty of customers ordering food which resulted in a small delay, but this wasn't a problem as we weren't in a hurry and it showed that everything was being freshly cooked to order. Which is nice! This pub has recently been refurbished and the decor is attractive. An enjoyable lunch.......very good overall, thanks guys.

Overall not a bad experience. The Sunday roast was really nice (and I'm fussy). The pudding, however, needed a little more attention to detail, apple crumble slopped into the bowl upside down, tasted ok thou. All the TV's showing football, brought our lunchtime outing to a premature end unfortunately, as the TV we were sitting under was extremely loud, we did ask if the sound could be turned off (it was hardly needed as there were another 2 in the immediate facinity and could be heard), but we were told it wasn't allowed! One shining light the Crown offers is Kayla! Efficient isn't a big enough word to describe her, an absolute credit to the Crown and I hope she's appreciated!!!

Pub
Nestled conveniently near transport links, "The Open Arms" is a charming pub that truly lives up to its welcoming name. Whether you're waiting for laundry or just passing through East Grinstead, this delightful spot offers a warm atmosphere and friendly service from the landlord, Luke, who goes above and beyond to make guests feel at home. The recent renovations have transformed the space into an inviting haven with a classic pub vibe.
WOW, What a renovation! The place looks amazing!!!!! Relaunch and new management and i have to say i am really impressed. Makes such a difference and Luke the manager is such a gentleman and very very welcoming. Great family run pub and nice atmosphere with a real old fashioned pub feel. Good draft selection and mix of ages in here. Will visit again and can't wait for the food to start again.

Popped in here with a few mates on a Saturday afternoon and Luke was very hospitable and accommodating and the beers were kept very well. Would recommend
Inquisition H — Google review
Tries hard, but for me never ticks all the boxes. Range of cask ales has reduced since I last visited 4 years or so ago, and now there was only one. Staff seem indifferent, but far from being rude.

Great place!!! We were there all day for the tennis and football, and despite losing had a wicked time and couldn't have picked a better spot for the finals - they provided free snacks for the game and the crowd and staff were so friendly and made us feel so at home, especially Luke who was an absolute mega legend and went above and beyond for us!! Thanks guys xxx

Very friendly pub close to trains, buses and bike routes.or just a place to walk to. Beer is served from the barrel at a very reasonable price. It also has Sky sports. That's good.

Love this place. Great beer, nice and quiet. If you want a great real ale and a relaxing atmosphere this is the place! Just don't all flock here or I'll then hate the place. ☺
Alex C — Google review
A nice selection of beers on cask and in bottles or cans, the group of lads who came in and asked for 4 pints of Stella seemed the only people who were disappointed by the selection. Friendly staff, a good addition to the growing micropub scene
