I appreciate an effort to pay a tribute to the artist, I really do (lets forget the enormous amount of money spent on it). But, the endeavour proved to be inherently unfeasible, sorry. All the good stuff is already elsewhere – Paris, USA, you name it. If you do not know about his works already, the museum can hardly spark any interest with all the sub-par paintings it has to offer.
Maybe an elegant monument would have done more justice to this punk of 19th century? Alas.
If you want to understand Courbet’s background, then visit this museum in his family home!
