Andalsnes in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Andalsnes, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Åndalsnes is a small town framed by steep mountains and deep fjords, making it a popular base for exploring Norway’s dramatic western scenery. It’s the gateway to famous viewpoints and routes like the Romsdalseggen ridge hike, the Trollstigen mountain road, and the Rauma Railway. Visitors come for outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, and fjord cruising, as well as the modern Norsk Tindesenter (Norwegian Mountaineering Centre). Despite its rugged surroundings, the town itself is compact and walkable, with easy access to nature right from the center.
With favorites like Isfjordsvegen, Rampestreken, and Romsdalsgondolen, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Tindestua and Eggen Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Andalsnes while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Rampestreken is a popular trail leading to an observation deck perched on a rugged mountainside, offering stunning views of dramatic peaks and fjords. The hike uphill can be challenging but provides ample opportunities to rest and admire the scenery. Visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Andalsnes town below and the surrounding mountains. Additionally, there is a restaurant called Eggen where hikers can enjoy coffee and sweets, although prices are on the higher side.
Coming from someone who isn’t as fit, the hike was not easy..but the view was totally worth it! 70% of the hike was nicely shaded so you could pace yourself and take breaks when needed. A lot of climbing, especially as you get closer to the viewpoint. Took us about 45mins going up. Do note that the restaurant and gondola remains closed on Monday (day we were hiking). Highly advisable to go early in the morning to avoid large crowds (they come in at 10am and above).

Took a while to get to the top but goodness me was it worth it! Plenty of opportunities to sit and catch your breath, lots of friendly people to talk to on your way up, and of course the views were absolutely incredible! It might feel a bit exhausting when you’re climbing but you’ll feel so good when you get right to the top! We took the gondola back down though as we were very tired, which itself was lovely and very fast! Highly recommend!
Megan M — Google review
We went up independent after everyone had all ready gone up it cost about £40 pounds return but we'll worth it cafe lovely hot chocolate and toilets. Fantastic views and walk ways. When we was last car down 16.00pm.
Rosemary W — Google review
From the summit to that ramp it takes about 25-30 minutes to walk down, and from the bottom to walk up, I heard people that they did about 1.5 hours on a relaxed hike. Views are great
Eugen S — Google review
Cable cabine was very expensive, however you can decide to climb (2km ~600m elevation). We had unstable weather so we decided to take lift, it was good decision and worth it. You can hike higher from cable cabine station, very well marked routes which gives incredible view points all around. Just take wind and watter proof jacket and dress well, in 5min weather can be completely changed.
Marek B — Google review
My wife and I took the gondola up and down. We were limited on time and found the gondola to be worth the price. The views from the upper gondola station are beautiful, and there's a few walking trails you can take. The Rampestreken viewpoint, however, is one of the more iconic options. The gondola station is actually even higher than the Rampestreken viewpoint. You need to descend down and then back up. I read a lot of reviews that scared me, people saying it was very hard to do this. I was also very worried about the trail itself and how safe it would be. To my surprise, getting to/from Rampestreken from the gondola was actually quite simple. Most of the trail is full of stairs, some made of stone, and others of rock. There are some parts of the trail that require a little more mobility, but it was nothing that we couldn't manage. It took us about 30-45 mins at a very slow pace to head down, and the same to come back. I actually found the way back to be much easier, despite it being uphill. Yes, I was out of breath, but going down required some balance, while going up was mostly steps. The trail is most difficult toward the top, and is a bit easier near the viewpoint. The views are well worth it. The entire way is full of spots you can stop and enjoy the scenery. The viewpoint itself is also very iconic and worth going to if you have the time and energy! The only thing I will suggest is avoiding days where it is raining. If everything was wet and muddy, things would have been much more difficult. You can still enjoy the views from the Gondola station and try the other trails.
Maneetpaul S — Google review
Hard going for someone who is unfit, but doable if you take your time. I’m 57 and have two bad knees but I made it. It’s very steep over rocks and tree roots, with a lot of big stone stairs. But it’s worth it and the cafe etc at the top is welcome.
Shaun C — Google review
Hike to 540moh is not one of easy...spare time and take gondola to eggen restaurant and hike some 100m down to rampa. For me, that was 3rd hike over 500m in the last 12 hours, and it was difficult. But the trail is awesome. Stairs from massive stones. Stunning view points along the way up.

Nesaksla

Hiking area
Nesaksla, a popular hiking destination, attracts hikers from various nearby attractions such as Romsdalseggen and Romsdalstrappa. The opening of The Romsdalen Gondola and Restaurant Eggen in 2021 has added to its appeal, offering diverse food experiences at an elevation of 708 meters. Visitors can comfortably reach the mountain station by cable car before embarking on their exploration.
We took the Gondola up and hiked down.. not for the faint hearted. Quite tough going, Walking boots/shoes recommended. Amazing views
Natasha M — Google review
From the arrival of the cable car, many hiking routes depart, suitable for all levels of difficulty and expertise. Trails are well signposted.

Took a tram up and hiked for hours....well also sat on the rocks and just took in all the beautiful sites and sounds. If you found yourself in Andalsnes, No way this is a hike you'll want to do. For those really into hiking you can hike up or down with a tram ride one-way......or hike up and down if you're really up for that.
Vincent D — Google review
we climb up with our 6 years old daughter and 1 year old son in baby kraxe. it took us 3 hours with breaks! but it was fun and worth the views. the hike is definitely challenging. but its not risky if you have sure footedness! respect the mountain and walk the path made you will be fine. cam back by gandola! walking down may be more risky then going up! def not recommended on a rainy day!
Amzzz — Google review
Beautiful scenery, its a "must do" if you are in Andalsnes. Gondola rides are quite expensive, nearly £45 return (495 Nok for adult atm). We went up with Gondola (one way is 330 Nok, about £30), and trekked down. Fortunately we had a really good weather with sun out and dry, could not ask better, so the path were not so slippery, but I can imagine if it was rainy or icy, then will be very slippery and would be not pleasant experience. I enjoyed going down a lot, challenging but rewarding as well, as you see great views on the way down and enjoy as long as you wish. One of the best sceneries I've seen in Norway so far!!! *If you have weak knees, a weak heart, or have any bit of mobility issues, I would not recommend going up or down as this path is quite steep, lots of steps and challenging! Make sure to wear proper hiking shows!
M A — Google review
From down below it does not look possible but there is a well maintained path all the way up. A few nervous places but otherwise very doable.

Lovely little haven for prayer, contemplation or just shelter from the rain while in Åndalsnes and waiting for a train. Thank you to those who maintain it for the public to enjoy. I had some lovely time practising my reading Norwegian from the Bible while sitting out a very rainy afternoon.

Mountain cable car
Romsdalsgondolen is a newly opened cable car in Andalsnes, Norway, offering a quick and breathtaking journey to the mountain peak of Nesaksla. Although it may be considered expensive for some, the panoramic views during the 5-minute ride are truly spectacular. Once at the summit, visitors can enjoy stunning vistas of The River Rauma and Romsdalsfjorden.
Amazing amazing amazing. Well worth going, cars every 30 mins. Wheelchair friendly, toilets available, large coffee/restaurant looking over the town. £65 for two people. Very windy but well worth going. Look at my posting for the town as this will explain more about this
Cazy B — Google review
This is where I found my happy place. Expensive but worth every penny/krone. We set off early, only 8 people onboard going up. Incredible views, made me quite emotional. Quiet, clean air, able to roam freely without crowds. Returned to reality, just 4 of us on the gondola, so we had front seats on the way down. Would have liked to have walked down but had a cruise ship trip booked pm and wasn't sure if we could make it down in time. I highly recommend this experience.
Lynne F — Google review
A great way to get to the mountain top above Åndalsnes. Go early to avoid the tour buses, but the cars were pretty frequent. Trip Advisor suggests getting tickets in advance , which we did and never received them! Luckily the attendant at the cable car managed to find them in the system. So, don't bother buying them in advance, just get them there.
Martin R — Google review
A Short walk from cruise ship. Fantastic view's from the top. With a cafe and toilet facilities at the top. Can't comment on the food as cafe was too busy, there was mixed reviews from fellow cruise friend's who ate there....from good to okay...and it is over priced...but is expected in Norway...This was my first stop in Norway
Peter H — Google review
Views are incredible during good weather. You can climb a bit uphill for even better experience. The only downside is that the lift is seriously overpriced. 1500 NOK for a round trip for a family is less than acceptable.
Radek P — Google review
Absolutely stunning views, thanks the cabelcar everyone can see out from the top of the mountain, right now it costs 560 NOK per person, but is worth it
Tomáš H — Google review
Do not be afraid of clouds, makes for great photos. Check the prices for the gondola before going, because it will make the Swiss blush.
Olav M — Google review
We wanted to explore during the day and also booked for dinner in Eggen so needed to head back in the evening. Bought the day tickets so used 4 times in total, not cheap but gives great views and it's less painful than walking to the summit with my old legs. There was only 1 side running for maintenance so there was a queue returning in the afternoon but got straight in t at other times. Plenty of washing to do at the summit, views from each side are completely different and your can easily get away from busier parts

The Golden Train

4.4
(29)
The Golden Train is a picturesque train journey that has been recognized as one of Europe's most scenic rides. It travels through the stunning Romsdalen valley, offering breathtaking views of natural wonders such as Trollveggen, Verma waterfalls, and Kylling bridge before reaching the village of Bjorli. The train's name originates from the historical event when Norway's gold reserves were temporarily hidden in Bjorli by King Haakon during World War II.
A stunning adventure and experience! What amazing views we got during this journey! Well guided with good information! Train starts from the station in the centre. Very easy to reach by car, walking, or from the cruise ship! It is extremely nice to combine with the gondola and restaurant at the top of the mountain!
Arne M — Google review
It was nice, but not jaw-dropping and was a bit boring at the end. Thankfully in mid-June the train was almost empty, so we could relax. Interesting story narrated while you go along, that is a considerable bonus to the experience.
Jokūbas M — Google review
Fantastic experience for both train fans and others The Golden Train takes you through beautiful sceneries and landscapes Meanwhile you get great info on the landscape, history and true Norwegian fairy tails All in all fantastic experience Trip takes 2,5 hrs At the turning point you have 20 min picture stop Great service by guide and train service manager Recommended trip

INDEPENDENT CRUISE BOOKINGS MUST READ THIS. We were booked on the 12 July while visiting on s cruise. Unfortunately, due to operational problems, ALL independent bookings were cancelled. These things happen except over 20 people didn't receive any notification the local representative was stuck with no information about how to resolve concerns and to add insult to injury those booked through the cruise line were allowed on. You are warned that booking excursions independently may result in the ship leaving without you. In this case, you may not even go in the first place so beware.
Don S — Google review
Cancellation 1 day before the train ride due to cruise vessel passengers having priority above other bookings. We had valid tickets but it was cancelled by the company. Buying tickets in advance does not help

Im tired Of seeing people lying and saying this food is actually good. But as a person who has ate here be aware of the Hamburgers Cause the texture is awfull. It was Gooey and Watery on the inside of the meat and it didnt taste the best. If you ever come by This Restaurant you should just find another one in the village. Its not worth losing 20 Dollars / 230kr On the food. (I Didnt get my Money Back).

Tindestua is a cozy café and cabin spot surrounded by stunning Norwegian nature, perfect for hikers and travelers seeking warmth and comfort. It offers great coffee, homemade pastries, and local dishes served with a personal touch. The wooden interior and mountain views create a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. Whether you’re resting after a hike or enjoying a quiet moment, Tindestua captures the charm of rural Norway — simple, welcoming, and beautifully scenic.

I went there twice. Once during the day when I got coffee and cake which I picked up myself from the bar and the second time when I tried to have dinner. Unfortunately while the place was not busy at the moment and there were a few waiters around, chatting, after 15 minutes no one came to the table to even ask about drinks.

Perched over 700 meters above Andalsnes, Eggen Restaurant offers a delectable dining experience with locally sourced ingredients and traditional Norwegian cuisine. The restaurant boasts unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Accessible via a scenic gondola ride, it provides an unforgettable experience for visitors. While the waiting time for service may be a drawback, the stunning location and delicious food make it worth a visit.
Absolutely delicious food! The portions were generous, and the homemade cinnamon bun that followed was a real treat. What truly stood out was the amazing staff – so friendly and kind, they even gave us some great tips for our hike. Highly recommend!

The restaurant has a really pleasant vibe – the food is tasty, fresh, and nicely presented. The atmosphere feels cozy, perfect both for a quick lunch or a longer dinner. The staff were friendly, attentive, and happy to give recommendations. Overall, a great experience and I’d be happy to come back.
Robert M — Google review
This restaurant and hiking paths were highlights of our trip to Norway. So much so, we went twice. I don’t know what was the best part: the food, the view, the people, or the hiking trails! The food: it was fresh, locally sourced, well seasoned, and perfectly prepared. For a tourist attraction, it is uncommon to find food of this high caliber. If you are lucky enough to see Greek meatballs (chef is Greek) treat yourself to an order, and then refuse to share it with your fellow diners. They are fantastic! The daily fresh fish was amazing, my daughter’s burger was very tasty and perfectly cooked. I wish we lived close enough to go here more often. The views: look at the pictures posted in the reviews, I don’t need to comment further. The views are spectacular. We were there in both sunshine and in fog, and both were beautiful in their own, right. The people: the service from the gondola operators down below, to the staff in the restaurant, everyone was wonderful. Polite, cheerful, and gave you a feeling they were genuinely happy to see you. The hiking trails: there are trails up top that are for every walking ability. Just be aware, you are walking out in nature on rocks- not some Disneyified place with handholds and perfectly cut paths. If you are not overly stable on your feet, then maybe take a pass on venturing too far, and take a bench and soak in the beautiful views. Either way you can’t lose. We will definitely be back! A perfect way to spend a day in town.
C K — Google review
Amazing views, you should book a table in advance to get a table with the best views. The obvious choice of food is the 4-course, and it is amazing. Professionally cooked and presented. You can walk up, very exhausting, or take the gondola which is decently expensive, but worth it.
Jonatan J — Google review
Nestled in a location with truly breathtaking views, this restaurant is all about the setting. While the view through the windows is picturesque, stepping outside reveals a panorama that’s nothing short of stunning—worth the visit on its own. Unfortunately, the food doesn't live up to the scenery. The prices lean toward the high end, and the flavors don’t quite justify the expense. With so many delightful eateries nearby, you're better off grabbing a bite elsewhere unless you're absolutely famished.
