Fondation Monet in Giverny is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and nature lovers. It encompasses Claude Monet's charming house, ornate gardens, and the artist's studio adorned with Japanese prints. The Musee des Impressionnismes Giverny, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, offers a romantic and surprising artistic journey. Visitors can explore exhibitions showcasing the museum's collections and American landscape artists' work during the French Impressionist period.
It was a beautiful visit! The lily pond in early October was not as stunning as in the summer time when I had first visited here. But it was probably less crowded. What an inspiring place! The town has certainly become more popular with visitors, though.

Monet's house and Gardens were a must see on my trip to France. We were just there a few weeks ago (late September) and the gardens were lush and absolutely stunning. We had entry tickets at 12pm and didnt have to wait. It was a great time of year to visit, we got a mix of very colorful flowers, autumn changes starting but also a good amount of water lilies that had bloomed. Really stunning. We walked into the town of Giverny after walking through the house and gardens and it was such a quaint town. We stopped at the Giverny chocolat shop, very good! Highly recommend a stop in Giverny!
Trina H — Google review
Always wanted to visit and I wasn't disappointed. Even in mid October, the gardens are still beautiful with many flowers in bloom. The lily pond had a bit of scum on but still pretty. The house is lovely. So many original photos and paintings, though few of Monet's. Then of course there is the shop. Lots of lovely gifts and books. Plenty of free parking with free overnight campervan parking nearby.
Gillian — Google review
Visiting Claude Monet’s house has been my dream, and it finally came true. The place is truly stunning and incredibly captivating from a design perspective. Every detail is beautifully crafted, and the colors are chosen to perfection. The garden is well-kept and absolutely gorgeous, with the iconic lily pond I had always wanted to see - simply remarkable. The entire estate is so well maintained, and being there felt like touching something truly sublime.
Alina S — Google review
We stopped here on our way to Normandy from Paris and were amazed at all the blooming flowers in late September. Monet’s house was a quaint cottage with beautiful views of the gardens. The restaurant food was delicious and the server was wonderful. Highly recommend it!
Ellen A — Google review
I don't know where to start! The house is a piece of art the gardens are pieces of art, the whole town is cute! Absolutely beautiful. Things that should be considered, how to get there, the season, the crowd, so that you know what to expect,I've been there twice, in June it was super hot super crowded but beautiful, and in October , chill weather less crowded, less flowers but the trees were magical
Fatin A — Google review
It was quite crowded for a rainy October day. I think it's quite difficult to get there in the summer. When you get off the train from Paris, you have two transportation options: a shuttle and a bus that resembles a children's train. Both cost 10 euros. I don't think the shuttle bus runs between 1:20 and 3:20, so keep that in mind when planning your return train. Monet's extensive Japanese collection was quite striking. The interior was quite colorful. If you don't plan to spend much time taking photos and want to explore the village, 3-3.5 hours is more than enough. There's an interesting mechanical museum in Giverny, open from 2 pm to 6 pm. Time your visit accordingly for a more enjoyable trip. Other than that, it's a typical European village.
Zeynep — Google review
Absolutely beautiful but very very crowded. The gardens are very easy to walk with wonderful displays of flowers. The lake is spectacular The house is easy to navigate and quite lovely we had approximately a 15 min queue to enter. I would advise you to buy tickets on line before hand the queues for tickets were massive. We got on line tickets so had no wait time. Parking is plentiful and free. There's a good choice of restaurants and cafes just outside the gardens they are quite pricey.

The Water Garden

4.7
(417)
Garden
Water Garden, located in Giverny, is a must-visit destination for art and nature enthusiasts. This stunning garden features an array of flowers and willow trees that inspired Claude Monet's famous Nympheas (Water Lilies) paintings. The central flower garden, Clos Normand, showcases Monet's clever gardening legacy with a variety of seasonal flowers.
Visiting Monet’s waterlilly pond was definitely one of the highlights in my life. I will let my photos speak for itself. The lilies were not in bloom during June 2024 when I was there yet one could visualise their dainty beauty on the rippling water in the bond. Such also was the experience of walking over Monet’s green bridge….just unbelievable. I felt I really walked into his paintings. Just mind blowing. A must see!
Marietjie W — Google review
I can't even express how beautiful this is! As an artist and garden lover, I was in heaven! Gardens were in full bloom in mid May, but too early for the water lilies. Leave yourself plenty of time to explore.
Lee B — Google review
To visit Claude Monet's Water Garden at Giverny is not merely to see a garden; it is to step inside a painting. This small, yet world-famous, corner of Normandy is the living, breathing source of the artist's monumental Nymphéas (Water Lilies) series. Separated from the more structured, vibrant flower beds of the Clos Normand by a small road (and a convenient tunnel), the jardin d'eau feels like entering another world—one that is cooler, shadier, and altogether more contemplative. The Atmosphere: A Living Canvas The first impression is one of serene, almost sacred, quietude. Even with the murmur of other visitors, the garden holds a profound sense of peace. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and foliage, and the sound is of rustling bamboo and the gentle lapping of water. The iconic Japanese bridge, draped in wisteria, is smaller and more intimate than one might imagine from the paintings. It serves as the perfect frame, drawing your eye across the pond's surface. Weeping willows trail their long, elegant branches into the water, their reflections blurring with those of the clouds above. The entire scene is a masterclass in composition, a meticulously crafted landscape designed by a painter's eye for the express purpose of capturing the ephemeral play of light. The Main Subject: The Water and the Lilies The water itself is the true star. It is a dark, luminous mirror, reflecting every nuance of the sky and the surrounding greenery. Upon this canvas float the famous water lilies. Visiting in late summer, as I did, the lily pads are a lush, deep green, punctuated by blossoms of white, pink, and pale yellow that seem to glow against the dark water. What the paintings capture, and what you feel viscerally when standing there, is the constant change. A passing cloud, a shift in the wind creating ripples, the sun breaking through the leaves—every second presents a new composition. You begin to understand Monet's obsession, his desperate and brilliant attempt to capture these fleeting moments of light and reflection. Practical Considerations & The Inevitable Crowds Let's be realistic: you will not have this paradise to yourself. Giverny is a pilgrimage site for art lovers worldwide, and the narrow paths around the pond can become congested, especially during peak season (late spring to early autumn). The challenge is to find your own quiet moment amidst the crowd. Patience is key, especially if you wish to get an unobstructed photo of the Japanese bridge. My advice is to arrive either as early as possible when the gates open or later in the afternoon when the tour bus crowds have begun to thin. This will give you the best chance to experience the garden's intended tranquility. Conclusion: Is It Worth It? Absolutely. Despite the crowds, the Water Garden at Giverny is an unforgettable experience. It is a rare opportunity to connect directly with an artist's vision and see the world, quite literally, through his eyes. It is more than just a beautiful garden; it is a living work of art, a testament to a master's dedication to capturing the sublime beauty of light on water. You leave not just with photographs, but with a deeper appreciation for the masterpieces they inspired. It is a place where nature and art dissolve into one another, leaving a lasting impression.
H M — Google review
So beautiful and dreamy, when not too crowded you can enjoy sitting on a bench and admiring the beauty of it
Fatin A — Google review
It is a very beautiful and picturesque place. The only downside is that there were plenty of people there. I visited this place in April, and it was difficult to enjoy the view. Visitor numbers should be controlled by ticket sales. Nevertheless, the place is worth visiting especially when you like Monet’s paintings!
Arkadiusz J — Google review
The gardens and pond are beautiful. We just visited this first week in May and it was EXTREMELY overcrowded.
Craig W — Google review
The garden is nice but not worth €12 and doesn't suit the number of people that it attracts. Too busy even at 10am on a Friday out of season. Narrow pathways so people are on top of each other.
Chris N — Google review
I may be biased as I love Monet and a good, colourful garden, but this place is wonderful. The skill to get the colours, landscape and different plants with different heights together is incredible. The place made me feel emotional, despite being surrounded by many, many tourists. Other than the water gardens, the village, church, house etc is worth a few hours. The museum is only ok - 5/10.

(Translated by Google) Mr Demarez is probably the most exciting artist I have met in my lifetime, any person who has visited his studio and had the chance to meet him there will tell you the same thing: this man has a real passion for art and his paintings are rich in emotions and stories, fueled by his own imagination, his travels and his technique. He is a person who lives from his art without any cheating, and unlike the jean-impressionists who recycle and vomit this artistic style without ever trying anything new, this man is in constant research and is probably the pearl of modern Giverny , which, before I met it, seemed to me to be nothing more than a soulless shell only nourished by its sumptuous gardens where I had the honor of working. Whether in Giverny or in one of its workshops elsewhere in France, I advise all art lovers to go there.

(Translated by Google) Unlike these crusts that are imposed on us almost everywhere as masterpieces, the paintings of C. Demarez are full of expression and also of a significant imagination. As much figurative as it is surreal, his work is highly evocative and has a raw side to grasp. This is rare in Paris and even in Giverny: and personally I like its theme of water and dancers... Finally, I understand that this painter also exhibits in New York and in Tokyo.

The Nymphéas, located in Giverny, is a popular restaurant offering a unique culinary experience in a setting inspired by the world of Claude Monet. It is situated right across from the House and Gardens of Claude Monet, providing an idyllic view of the water garden.
Following the tour of the Monet gardens it was time for lunch. I enjoyed the vegetable quiche with salad. Their drink of the day was orange juice lemonade, with or without alcohol. If you wanted alcohol, they gave you a choice. Very refreshing and lunch was great! We loved our waitress, Eugenie.
Tracey N — Google review
This restaurant is located at the entrance of the Monet's garden so it's a place full of tourists. Most of the people there, including us, had less than an hour to grab a quick bite, so the quality of the visit can be spotty and hurried. We had a good experience there on our visit. The ham omelet was good, the accompanied green was fresh. The Monet's salad was full of seafood on top of a fresh heap of green. The basket of fries was hot and tasty. This was not haut cuisine, but for everyday food, this place did a decent job. They forgot to give us butter for our bread, but we enjoyed it anyway. It is a tad pricey for what it offers. But this is where tourists are more willing to pay a bit more, as they have limited options.
Credible C — Google review
We stopped here for lunch during our visit to Giverny and were pleasantly surprised by this charming French café-restaurant serving simple yet delicious fare. We ordered the chicken with tartar sauce, chicken nuggets with fries, and a Lorraine quiche accompanied by a side of fresh greens. Every dish was freshly prepared, served promptly, and arrived warm and flavorful. The restaurant offers a variety of seating options—indoor, outdoor, and shaded patio—with plenty of tables available. It’s a convenient and inviting stop, perfectly located for a meal before or after visiting the Monet mansion.
Sandeepa D — Google review
Filet mignon is made with cheap pork, extremely dry and barely warm when served. 28.5€ for that nonsense is not only a rip-off but a crime. The vegetable quiche is acceptable, but not good. You can find better quality at Walmart. The crème brûlée was good. Waitresses aren't friendly and may ignore you. Save your time, money, and energy. Do yourself a favour and avoid this place.

One of the best place to have lunch after visiting Monet's house; you are siting next to the garden feeling relax and well take care. Our waitress spoke English, she was very nice and pleasant to talk. Food came fast, big portions. It was absolutely great to stop by.

We have to say this meal is the most terrible meal for us. The lamb was very dry and seemed like they’d cooked it two days ago. The soup tasted like they forgot put salt in it. The worst part was hot chocolate. I never thought it was so difficult to make a normal hot chocolate!! I really regretted that I should’ve checked the comments before I went inside.

The Museum of Impressionism Giverny, located in the village of Giverny, is a small art museum that focuses on the history and significance of the Impressionist movement. It is open from March to November and offers collections and exhibitions dedicated to this influential artistic period. The museum provides insight into the importance of Impressionism for French and world art.
It's a wonderful place to visit. You'll definitely spend about two hours there, exploring the gardens and museum. It's definitely a great trip idea. However, the store prices were very high, which was very disappointing. I only managed to buy three postcards. Still, it was a wonderful experience.

Wonderful gardens, well worth a visit - however, immensely crowded, there is no limit to the number of people allowed in. Nearby are a few nice restaurants. Also the Museum of Impressionism (separate ticket). The line to enter Monet's house was too long, but we've seen it before. We prefer more time in the gardens, which in late May when we visited, were bursting with color.

Nice museum, not a lot of Impressionism but mainly related artwork and contemporary influenced art. It’s worth the detour if you have the time. Don’t be sad to skip it. Best is the garden flower arrangements. The staff is friendly and helpful. The museum is often empty

Fantastic Air Conditioning! Clean bathrooms! Cute boutique. Modern building! Uhhh...the art is also interesting. They have lesser known American impressionists and contemporary art. But mostly, it's quiet, cool, and a respite from the hordes at Claude Monet's house down the block.

Very nice and interesting restaurant. Fab staff, that’s obvious and very important. Very nice and helpful people. Interesting and original menu. Bowl falafel, cocotte de volaille au cidre de Giverny, ravioles really tasty. Portions are quite small, but the quality is awesome. Just order a starter. Beautiful surroundings of restaurants, gardens, Monet home and famous bridge. Definitely worth to visit.

I suppose the menu changes periodically, but as of our visit (October 2023) this is _NOT_ a “tourist trap”; the cuisine, atmosphere, service all “digne” of an excellent French restaurant with reasonable prices. We arrived around 2:30 PM — a bit late for lunch — but they were happy to seat us. Offered the choice, we sat on their beautiful and spacious patio. My girlfriend had a Moules-frites with a 1664. It had been quite some time since I had indulged in an Escalope de veau à la Normande, which of course implored red wine. It was all very delicious.

Me and my wife decided to have lunch in this restaurant because we liked the view of the grounds. We are glad we did so. In addition to beautiful garden outside, this place looks good inside. The food was excellent as well. I had onion soup and seafood salad, and my wife ordered duck. Everything tasted great and the presentation of the dishes was good also. The server was very friendly.

Perfect spot for a glass of wine and beers with friends after walking the Monet's gardens and the beautiful town of Giverny. Everyone was very friendly, the food was good and decently priced for a tourist attraction. I had the tartare and my friends had burgers and salads. Everything was great. The portions were quite large, the ambiance was pleasant and it was nice to sit down with a nice glass of wine with friends after walking for three hours through the town, museum, house and garden. There's even a miniature train that will take you from the train station in Vernon right into Giverny. That was a lot of fun! Highly recommend making the trip out to this area. I'll recommend it to anyone I know visiting Paris in the future!

Everything started nicely with proper welcome and very sympathetic waitress. I then ordered a Caesar salad. It was the smallest one I have ever had: 4 small pieces of fried chicken, 4 cherry tomatoes, some cheese and salad plus dressing. Twice bigger would have been a normal size. I told the owner of the restaurant who gave me a 5 euros discount. But still at 17 minus 5 euros that was not a bargain.

We tried to eat lunch here after visiting Monet’s gardens. When we arrived there were only a few tables being served, but the crowd grew quickly. It appeared there were only 2 or 3 waiters working for lunch time. We sat at our table for 15 minutes and still no server had come to take our order (not even to bring us water). At that point it started raining and we changed our table to inside instead of the terrace. No one came to help. We moved and took our menus on our own. Once we got inside, again, no one came to serve us. I went to ask the manager if we would be able to be served and eat within the next hour as we had another tour scheduled. He told me it would not be possible so we left. Before we exited, we used the restroom. The ladies bathroom had no toilet paper and no paper towels. Horrible customer service. Would not recommend.

We had lunch at the charming restaurant and was pleasantly surprise with how good the food was and their prices were very reasonable. 2 burgers, mussels with fries, starter plate of prosciutto and cheese, glass of wine and 2 lemon sodas totaling 76euro is not bad! Minus two stars for the rude waiter and unfair treatment of American tourists versus those who spoke French.

Hotel
Hotel Restaurant La Musardiere is a picturesque 19th-century lodging located in the heart of Giverny, just a short walk from Claude Monet's famous house. The hotel offers simple and warm rooms with views of the garden, providing an authentic and comfortable experience. Originally a convalescent home for young women, this charming hotel is now known for its stylish accommodation and dining options.
We only went to the hotel restaurant - we were not guests of the hotel. I'm really shocked by the bad reviews - the food was delicious! This restaurant was so lovely and delicious, the host was very friendly and accommodating, and the patio and gardens were really delightful. It was a beautiful serine atmosphere and perfect for a leisurely dinner in the heart of the town of Giverny. The service was really excellent (SO much better than the restaurant across the street - La Parenthèse - where the service was just terrible). All the food at this restaurant was delicious and the kids menu (grilled chicken or fish croquet with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies) was very yummy - the kids ate nearly everything. We had a lovely evening and meal but, in retrospect, we probably shouldn't have gone to this upscale restaurant with our kids. French children seem to be (universally) impeccably well-behaved - they could eat at any restaurant no matter how quiet or how fancy and have no problems. French kids sit still for hours, quietly, politely and eat everything and anything they are offered without complaint and that’s just what is expected of children at meal times in France. In Canada, if you went to a restaurant in the summer with a patio surrounded by gardens, it would not at all be uncommon for a bunch of kids to be running around in the surrounding fields and gardens playing games and laughing and having fun while parents enjoyed a leisurely meal. Kids doing anything but sitting quietly at meal times highly inappropriate in France – so needless to say we felt quite embarrassed. The staff brought our kids a few garden games to play with while they were in the field so that was very thoughtful and kind. We'd definitely recommend this restaurant and would eat there again but would probably not recommending going with young kids (unless of course yours are super wonderfully-behaved like French kids are!)

This isn't just a place to stay—it's an escape. Nestled just a few blocks from Monet's famous gardens, it offers a refined experience with delicious meals and breathtaking grounds. It's a tranquil retreat where time seems to slow down, perfect for unwinding. The staff was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. We loved it! The area is stunning too! One of a kind!

We had a mixed experience at La Musardiere. The room was excellent, the location perfect and the food very good indeed. The service was in part dreadful. The woman who checked us in and the man who brought us drinks before dinner were great - all smiles and warmth. However, the main server at dinner and the person who served us breakfast clearly didn't want to be there and gave us the very strong impression they didn't want us to be there either. You know you're going to be in for a long night when the waitress brings you completely the wrong bottle of wine - different producer, appellation, vintage and even appearance - after persuading you to choose it! - and when that is pointed out, changes it without apology or explanation, a smile or indeed a word. Such a shame because the food and the setting were so good, but when you feel unwelcome, it affects the whole experience.

The room was very nice. We ate both nights in the restaurant - the food was outstanding - the best meals we had on our entire trip in France! Great location in Giverny - easy walk to Monets Garden and other sights.

The room was very nice, comfortable, and quiet. The cost was very reasonable, and the breakfast they offered was quite lovely! And, their customer service was excellent, too. Next time I'm in Paris, I plan to stay with them again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Dinner was superb. Room was spotless and the morning host was kind enough to give us coffee and croissants as we were on our way to the airport.

Very nice setting for this meal at La Musardière. The food was good, service was a bit slow. Prices are a bit high in my view, I suspect though that it is the same for all copeting places in Giverny.

Tried the chef’s tasting menu. The appetizer was a bowl of cold mushrooms. The two mains were both 3 bites, and the second appeared to literally be deli sliced turkey. Dessert was good but overall the experience was very unsatisfying and definitely not worth the money. Staff were great but there are better and/or cheaper options in Giverny.

La Capucine in Giverny offers a unique self-service dining experience with high-quality, homemade traditional food at reasonable prices. The eatery is part of a wide selection of quality eateries in the area that prioritize working with local producers. It's an ideal spot for a quick bite before visiting Claude Monet's gardens and house, providing a tranquil setting despite being popular. Visitors can enjoy afternoon tea and delicious pastries while taking in the beautiful garden or browsing the souvenir shop.
Great plate of cheese and ham followed by a chocolate brownie. Country living in a great spot at a reasonable price. Very friendly service 👍

Coffee is tasty! Nice staff and patient with customers that speak little French

Sadly we arrived 3.35 p.m. so there was not even French fries to eat as a snack after all day walking around. The restroom were extremely dirty. To the point you could go. The ambiente is so adorable, but sadly nothing more. It could be an amazing experience, but was a total disaster

Stopped here in October in our way, of course, to the gardens. Really beautiful and relaxing place with great food. I just loved the relaxing vibe here.

I came for afternoon tea. The tea tastes good. Apricot tarte tastes fine, but I beg to differ for the choux a la creme cause that's one of the best I've ever had. But the service is really slow, and the counter for patisserie doesn't have a cashier, so it's a hassle to make the payment. The garden is good to spend some time during in nice weather. They also have a souvenir shop. I bought the cider. There's one cider that is labeled as "medaille d'or" and the regular one with 3 euros difference on price. I asked the seller what's the difference between those two taste-wise, but she couldn't even explain. My friends agreed that the taste difference for both bottles is hardly noticeable and most likely the same tho there's 3 euros difference on price.

Perhaps I was lucky, but this worked really well for me. Food was fine, beer was excellent and people were nice. Surroundings were very enjoyable. I'm glad we stopped here for lunch

It was a quick bite to eat. Says table service but you ordered at the bar and then picked up your food. We ate in the bamboo forest and it was wonderful. The food was good.

i don’t understand why this place has such bad reviews. the food was very good and was plated nicely. we got club sandwiches, fish and chips, roasted eggplant, and deviled eggs. everything was very good. the staff was very friendly. also the shop connected to it has a really cute cat that was sleeping when we were there! very good overall in my opinion!

La Parenthèse is a charming restaurant located in Giverny, just a short walk from Claude Monet's home and gardens. The setting is filled with flowers and offers a friendly atmosphere for visitors to relax and enjoy home-cooked, seasonal cuisine. Despite some mixed reviews on specific dishes, the overall experience seems positive, with praise for the varied menu that includes options like burgers, fish, pork stew, and a vegetarian choice.
Very nice place with delicious French kitchen and a nice variety of cocktails. The stuff is super friendly. You can eat on this beautiful terrace and then enjoy the next round of cocktails in the sun on the sun-beds. Highly recommended!

The restaurant is located in a pleasant area with a welcoming atmosphere. However, the quality of the food did not meet expectations. The beef was significantly overcooked—served well-done and unfortunately too tough to enjoy. Additionally, the accompanying fries appeared to be of low quality, possibly over-fried or reheated multiple times, resulting in a dry and unappealing texture. Overall I do not recommend this restaurant.

Very nice terrace and overall atmosphere. Placement is also a little aside from the crowds at the museum. Food I was expecting to be top notch but was somehow good. The best from what we were served was the burata with peach sauce which was delicious. Aubergine parmigiana was good but could be better.

We got lunch after visiting Monets house. You would think since it is so close by that it would be a tourist trap and not great, but we really enjoyed it. For €50 we got onion soup (my favorite French Onion Soup from our entire time in France), stew, cheese, and beer. It was a lovely day outside on their patio. They did get busy, and I saw some people waiting to be seated when the staff got busy, but I thought the service overall was reasonable for the crowd.
Madeline B — Google review
We ordered two simple coffees at the counter because we had to continue our journey after visiting the house. In addition to a complete lack of empathy, we were also charged for two cover charges, even though we never sat down, as we had clearly asked to have them at the counter. In the end, we paid €5.40 for two basic coffees at the bar. When I jokingly said, “Oh, even the cover charges,” the girl just smiled without even reconsidering. Unfortunately, this kind of attitude towards tourists is counterproductive — both for them and for all the people who work hard and with dedication to keep the painter’s legacy alive.

Straight forward eatery with simple menu but open continuously throughout the day and sufficient choice for a good meal for everyone in our party. Friendly service and choice of inside or outside

Beautiful meal ! Great setting ! Really enjoyed sitting here after visiting Monets gardens.

This was a lovely restaurant to eat at after a trip to Monet’s Garden. There were many great options for everyone. After a hot day this was a great place to refuel for the rest of the day! The staff were helpful to order the dishes that were seen at other tables. They were on top of service, would recommend to anyone who needs sustainable in Giverny!
