Zhangjiajie in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Zhangjiajie, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Zhangjiajie is famous for its otherworldly sandstone pillar landscapes in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site that inspired the floating mountains in the film “Avatar.” Visitors can explore miles of hiking paths, high viewpoints, and glass walkways that cling to cliffs for dramatic views. Nearby Tianmen Mountain offers one of the world’s longest cable car rides, a cliff-side glass skywalk, and the steep “Heaven’s Gate” staircase. The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, once the longest and highest of its kind, adds another striking vantage point over the region’s deep gorges.
With favorites like Huangshizhai, Wulingyuan, and Wulingyuan Scenic Area, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Tangshifu so you can get the best taste of Zhangjiajie while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Spanning a drop of around 300 meters, this bridge features a glass floor for jaw dropping views.
It was drizzling when we visited, placed is open 8am to 4pm. You need to put on rubber protective soles before you can walk on the glass bridge. This is the longest glass bridge in the world . It was pretty breathtaking walking on the glass bridge . You can also walk via Ferrata and feel like a cliff hangar . We did the extended reality /VR to ride on a hot air balloon to view ZhangJiaJie .

I love the Zipline. So fun and a great memorable experience. It is not scary at all as it is very slow and secure. We waited almost an hour on a Fri, for a one minute zipline ride. After that was a super long slide all the way down, round and round. You need to bend you body forward, don't hold your hands at the sides too tight, and position your legs so there is least friction and then you can slide easily.
YC B — Google review
Amazing place to visit! 100% recommend. The views from the bridge are amazing, even for those scared of heights looking through the glass onto trees was okay. The bridge has sections of metal so you do not need to walk on the class if you don't want to. They give you special shoe coverings to wear on the bridge. We also did a VR hot air balloon activity over the canyon, ziplined to the other side of the canyon (terrifying for thode scared of heights, but my friends loved it), took a slide down to the bottom of the canyon and then a short boat ride to the start of the hike. We hiked 3km along the canyon. If ziplining and a slide isn't your thing you can get an elevator down instead. To note: Zipline waiting time can be very long. There are toilets along the canyon walk. Take a waterproof coat or umbrella as some parts of the hike you walk under dripping rock.
Rachel ( — Google review
I think I had very high expectations from all the videos that I had watched. But it was still good. The glass wasn't as clear as I had expected but we had a fun time taking silly photos of one another and as a group. They give you shoe covers to put over your shoes to keep the glass clean before you walk on the glass. There's a food court at the other end of the bridge and toilets. The VR, slides and zip lining activities are at the other side of the bridge.
Maria N — Google review
Take wonderful pictures from the glass bridge. Can try bungee jump for those who dare. Took the ski chair. It was exciting. Was worried initially but it was safe. Enjoy the view. Had some fun on the huge too. Be prepared to walk and climb many many steps. Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowd.
Peggy T — Google review
The glass bridge and the views were another highlight of Zhangjiajie. You are given shoe covers to wear over your shoes so you do not scratch the glass. Looking down through the glass can be a bit scary but looking straight ahead is absolutely fine. Views are incredible. There is an option to do a flying fox from one side to the other, then sliding down a slide. At the bottom you can also do a short cruise. A highlight of the area. A must see if not scared of heights.
Alexandra G — Google review
Loved the view from this beautiful and long glass bridge. A popular spot for doing bungee and zip line too. Only one caveat, the glass on the bridge is quite badly scratched so the view underneath isn’t that great. The view of the canyon is simply mind blowing.
Rahul S — Google review
Too many steps and toilet limited and quite difficult to find them. Long queues as many local travellers despite this being a off peak season. Glass floor can get dirty easily so don't try to lie on it for photo taking unless you don't mind.

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is a breathtaking landmark known for its world-renowned glass bridge, offering stunning panoramic views. The bridge connects two hilltops with a thrilling glass-bottomed section, providing an exhilarating experience for visitors. While the bridge is a major draw, the canyon itself offers much more to explore, including vibrant blue rivers, unique wildlife, and traditional Chinese attractions like slides and boat rides. Visitors can also trek through the valley to witness magnificent rock formations and waterfalls.
I arrived thinking that my ticket to the national park would work here, but it's a separate ticket. I chose line b with the glass bridge. It's an impressive structure and quite cool walking over it. The sightseeing elevator was underwhelming after going down the Bailong elevator already. We did the 3.5km walk to the exit and it was stunning! Well worth it. There are various places to stop along the way to get food and drinks.

I’ve always been amazed by the universe, but this place made me realize: what mankind creates is one of the true values we bring to the world. Without this ability, we would never be able to explore such extraordinary places. This bridge is a testament to what human engineering can achieve — the longest and highest glass bridge in the world, spanning 266 meters. Standing on it, I felt as if man is the universe, and the world is but a blank page, waiting to be imagined and shaped. It’s an absolute must-visit. You could easily spend the entire day uncovering the hidden gems woven into this one-of-a-kind place.

Was a unique half day family experience for us. We have bought a combined ticket of the glass bridge and 5 attractions. Children and elderly received discounted ticket. You need to have passport to be able to buy a ticket. If you take a taxi, ask to bring you directly to the glass bridge entrance that is higher located than the main entrance. But you can reach the glass bridge from lower gate by using free shuttle bus. We initially intended to visit only the glass bridge, but we were very satisfied to have the combined one in the end. After glass bridge we visited Virtual reality view in baloon (you will receive hygienic one use towels on your face). Next we entered down and up the elevator. Third was zipline to.cross the canyon. Was actually very safe and pleasant also for our elderly group member. Please note that children under 30 kg weight are not enter the zip line! So please check in advance the restrictions for After we moved over to the other side by zipline, we tried the multi level slide. Before sliding, we got equiped with sliding trousers and hand gloves. Right after you can have rest in the near by buffet. Then we transerred on last attraction- the boat- to our final destination- walk in the Grand canyon. This was amazingly comfortable with beautiful views on the smaragd coloured green water. The walk is not difficult and has antislippery surface on most of the wooden bridge pathways. We had to wear raincoats on some parts of the walk due to rain. There is a colourfully lighted cave as well and toilettes. Overall was a very pleasant family experience. On day of our visit the place was not crowded and it took as 4 to 5 hours to enjoy everything without time pressure.Recommend to inquire in your hotel to help you to purchase the tickets. Please note that the Grand canyon is located around 30 min by car from the Zhangjiajie national forrest park and you need to buy a separate entrance ticket.
Ivana D — Google review
The glass bridge maybe the postcard of this attraction, but the gorge and canyon itself is breathtaking. A blending of man made outdoor activities with stunning natural gorge surrounding, make it even more exciting to visit. The park layout design is interesting, visitors enter at the highest point of the canyon, then hiking or a combination of hiking and joining rides on a one way path towards the park exit. For those seeking adrenaline rush, bungee jumping, zip lining over a deep and vast canyon and sliding are fun activities and act as means of transportation (taking you to next location on the one way route). For those who prefer a less heart beating activity, can choose to pay for a fast elevator down or to hike several hundred meters down an almost vertical trail. Once you are at the bottom of the canyon, there is a wonderful 3 kilometers trail zipping along the stream that leads you to the boat pier. There is an outdoor cafe, partially under rock wall by where you can have coffee and relax. There is a small "bandit" cave with colorful lighting on the trail. The final section is a 10 minute boat cruise on the serene lake. The park is some 30 minutes away from Wulingyan Zhangjiajie national park. It's worth adding half a day or another full day in the itinerary.

When staying in Zhangjiajie make sure to visit the Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge! The facilities are good (toiletry, lunch areas, tourist shops) and plenty of vending machines available for cold refreshments. Highly recommend the Glass Bridge, Slide and boat trip as well as walking whole Route B.

When planning your visit to Zhangjiajie, you absolutely have to see the Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge! The entire experience is wonderful. The facilities, including restrooms, lunch spots, and tourist shops, are well-maintained, and there are plenty of vending machines to grab a cold drink. For the best experience, I highly recommend walking the entirety of Route B, which includes the thrilling Glass Bridge and Slide, followed by a relaxing boat trip. The scenery is breathtaking, but I suggest going on a cooler day to fully enjoy the long walk.
Bhavik J — Google review
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is a large outdoor activity area where the main feature is the world's longest glass suspension bridge that spans across the grand canyon giving tourists a thrilling crossing over the canyon where you can see all the way to the bottom. Aside from this, there are also zip lines, outdoor elevators as well as narrow cliff side walkways and bungee jumping for the thrill seeking adventurers.
Richard F — Google review
Do take the boat ride & walk out the Canyon after the bridge, the best part of the trip for me was the walk along the river out & not the bridge. There is a nice cafe in the middle of the trail out. An awesome place to have a cuppa.

A great place to visit at night. A happy mixture of Kitch and culture. Make sure you visit and explore the 2nd level. Nice little miny shows are put on with quite amazing talent, voices and choreography.

This place looks amazing! Unfortunately on the day of our trip it was cold, cloudy and rainy. What we did see was great but most of it was in the clouds. Will have to visit again. Everything is well signposted and good paths to walk on. They provide a bus up to the main park. The glass elevator gives good views too. Places to eat local snacks and drink.

Wulingyuan

National park
Wulingyuan, located in China's Central Hunan province, is a captivating national park celebrated for its stunning natural features. The town of Wulingyuan enjoys a prime location surrounded by core scenic areas including Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Baofeng Lake, and Yellow Dragon Cave. Visitors can easily access these sites as they are within a short driving distance from the town.
Incredible landscapes, Wulingyuan is the name of the neighborhood of one of the two entrances to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Allow a full day to see the main peaks, 2 days to do the whole park. Don't forget to take the Charming Xiangxi Theatre in the evening, which is a 15-minute walk from the entrance!

It's icon and a must see destination. Very beautiful and fascinating scenery. It does take all day to get through the park. It is very crowded. You take a bus, lift and cable way. Quite a bit of walking. It is a bit expensive, but I can't imagine the cost to make this accessible to the public. There are lots of restrooms and places to buy snacks and drinks. Because of the long lines, I would probably only visit once.
Sharon O — Google review
Wulingyuan, an awe-inspiring natural wonder, is renowned for its majestic mountains, often referred to as the Avatar Mountains due to their striking resemblance to the floating mountains depicted in the movie "Avatar". This spectacular area, encompassing 48 uniquely shaped peaks, stands as a testament to nature's artistry, drawing visitors from around the globe. Each of the 48 mountains in Wulingyuan boasts its own distinct character, with towering pinnacles and lush greenery that create a breathtaking panorama. The region's beauty is further enhanced by the mists that often shroud the peaks, lending an ethereal quality to the landscape. This misty veil adds an element of mystery and enchantment, making every view feel like a glimpse into an otherworldly realm. The flora and fauna of Wulingyuan are as diverse as its topography. The area serves as a sanctuary for a wide array of wildlife, and its dense forests are home to numerous plant species, some of which are rare and endemic. The harmonious coexistence of such biodiversity adds another layer of allure to this natural paradise.
Fernankd L — Google review
First, it is a very large area with an insane amount of walking up and down stairs. If you are like kung fu panda who hates stairs, avoid like the plague. Second, very poor signages and total chaos as even the locals are lost like everyone else. For a world famous destination it has a very lowly standard of providing clear directions, customer service and crowd control. Third, only the Avatar area is amazing. Forget the rest. Four, it is too expensive. Five, it is merciless and indifferent to physically challenged people and senior citizens. It is quite clear that this park doesn't welcome such categories of people.

It’s really rather cool but be warned: It’s touristy as hell and buying tickets is a pain. If you are sure of your dates just buy them beforehand. If you’re like me and put things off to the last minute then this is what I did. Even though on the board it said the tickets were sold out for the for time slot (it’s timeslot entry) I waited in line and when the clock went from 8:00 to 9:00 there was a reset and then tickets for the 9:00 entry were for sale again. Make sure to only buy tickets from the machine if they match your time. I think 2 full days is enough to see the park, depending on how much you wanna hike then maybe 3. Fields in the sky is the coolest one IMO. The cable cars and other stuff is cool but be prepared for insane lines. It’s also rather touristy so if you want the more raw experience then be prepared to go for a hike
Phillipos L — Google review
Wulingyuan national park is a scenic and historical site. This is also an UNESCO site listed in 1992. The park is very big, you can take up to one full day to hike along the many ravines and gorges with picturesque streams, pools, lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Its better to carry a park map with you, just in case you lost your sense of direction.

Wulingyuan Scenic Area

4.7
(70)
Wulingyuan Scenic Area is a vast and picturesque landscape featuring unique sandstone pillars, streams, pools, and waterfalls. It encompasses the Huanglong Cave within Zhangjiajie City in Hunan Province. This area boasts typical karst topography and is recognized as a member of the International Show Caves Association. It's also part of China's first round of 4A-level tourist areas and one of the country's well-known tourism brands.
A category 5A tourist attraction in China. The nature is breathtaking and it is the place where the movie Avatar was filmed. That makes this place even more popular. Be reminded that the journey is a long walk up and down hills with stairs, so the elderly should walk slowly and firmly. To wander up here is not easy. It requires a few connections with the national park coach. Information about the connections is quite limited and the drivers and Chinese officers are not helpful at all. Also, the coaches drive super fast through curves, which is very dangerous.
Tony C — Google review
The park is really big, you can buy a ticket of 4 days visit. You should buy with the help of a hotel or a tour because otherwise you need a Chinese number and to know Chinese because the official site is in Chinese. I suggest to enter from the east part in wulkngyuan and to do the bailong elevator in the way down so you avoid so much crowds.
Riccardo — Google review
Wulingyuan Scenic Area Scenic might be an understatement: This 1000 square mile area contains thousands of sandstone pillars that are nature's version of skyscrapers—some even stretch taller than the Empire State Building’s midpoint. It's no wonder this site was a major inspiration for the world of Pandora in Avatar. 📍 Zhangjiajie, China 🇨🇳

Very pretty, and it’s a four day ticket so good to spend some time to just explore different areas of the park! Bailong elevator was quite overrated in my opinion, but essential to help you get up to the top. The crowds/your groups are insane, best to go really early!

Huangshizhai, also known as the Yellow Village, is a misty viewpoint offering stunning vistas of unique stone hills. Accessible by hiking trails or a cable car, it's recommended to follow the Golden Whip Stream trail to reach this picturesque spot. The trail is shaded and serene, with opportunities to encounter adorable monkeys along the way. However, visitors are advised not to feed them and keep snacks concealed in their bags.
We were here in april on a wednesday around noon and didn’t have to wait. The cable car ride is amazing and the views from the top are one of a kind. Clean toilets on the upper station many shops even a pharmacy. The cable cars seemed well maintained and are built by a french company.

Tianmen Mountain is one of the many stunning attractions in Zhangjiajie, a region known for its lush vegetation and diverse landscapes. The area boasts karst upthrusts, waterfalls, limestone caves, and rivers teeming with rare flora and fauna. Visitors can also immerse themselves in the traditional lifestyle of ethnic minorities like the Tujia, Miao, and Bai people who call this place home.
Unfortunately the day I went it was very foggy but it was still an amazing experience. The cable car took us to the mountain and the rest of the journey was taken on many, many escalators but the view was still amazing. I can only imagine how breathtaking it would have been without the fog. The glass walkway was very fun to walk through and I was still able to take some amazing photos.
Beatriz F — Google review
Since I didn't book tickets for the 72奇楼 in advance, I only took photos from the outside and across the street before taking a taxi back to the hotel (staying at Hilton Hampton Hotel希爾頓歡朋酒店). It’s right opposite the Tianmen Mountain天門山 ticket station, super convenient. On the third day, since the hotel was right across from the ticket office, we could take our time enjoying breakfast before heading over. We had booked an entry time between 7:30 and 8:00 AM. There weren’t many people, so we quickly made it onto the cable car. And because it wasn’t crowded, we pretended not to understand and waited for the next cabin before getting on 😉. Due to the heavy fog—or perhaps the morning mist hadn’t cleared yet—the mountain views were sometimes clear, sometimes obscured. But I could tell we were really high up, and it was a bit scary... Finally, we reached the mountaintop. I initially thought taking the West Route would be easier, but it wasn’t until we reached Tianmen Mountain Temple that I found out we had to take the mini cable car at the summit to descend—otherwise, we’d have to backtrack along the West Route or take the longer East Route. When I saw the cable car, my legs went weak—it was basically a suspended gondola. That day, it was windy with a light drizzle, so we had no choice but to take the East Route again. When we arrived at Tianmen Cave, the opening wasn’t visible due to the fog. We had no option but to go into a restaurant and have a bowl of noodles (only wonton was available, and thankfully, it wasn’t spicy). After waiting about an hour, the fog finally lifted a little, so I took a quick "I was here" photo just to get the obligatory shot.

Very nice. The price was quite steep but it included the amazing cable car ride that took you directly from the heart of the city to Tianmensan in half and hour, no fuss. The view from the top was beautiful and it was also fun to ride the never-ending escalators.

Amazing mountain. Get there early and go to the West walk first to beat the tours. The glass skywalks are incredible. This is a must see if going to China. The “Avatar” mountains are great to see also. Spend the day and climb the Stairs to Heaven and Fairy peak. Get your cardio peaked because there are loads of stairs and long walks but well worth it
Adrian T — Google review
Most incredible park, even better than the National Park. There was so much fog unfortunately but the hike on top of the mountain made it so worth it, despite it. I recommend also for you to take route B, as it allows you to do the 999 Stairs to Heaven first and finish with the hike on top of the mountain. It is also a much less crowded route. You do end up taking the cableway, downward at the end of your visit
Béatrice S — Google review
Nature is amazing, everything is breathtaking. When I've been to Japan, I've heard that you have to rely on luck to see Mt. Fuji. This place is no different. Of course, I visited on a foggy day, so I didn't get the most beautiful view, but it was still impressive and the weather was beautiful. I recommend buying comfort for your money. It will save you time, reduce fatigue, and eliminate the frustration of waiting in line.

This is mountain is definitely a must visit place in Zhangjiajie. Breathtaking scenery, a challenge to hike up the stairways till the top... it's like a stairways to heaven... lol.. with the sun ray thru the huge gap... and never ending escalators to the very top of the mountain. Finally, the Bailong lifts that brings you back safely to the other side of the mountain.

It is a great scenic spot. You take a cable car, and after that a shuttle bus. The shuttle bus goes through 99 hairpin bends to get you to the Gateway of Heaven. After that, you can also take escalators (12 in total) to the peak. You can also try to walk the 999 steps to the Gateway of Heaven. Toilets are reasonably clean, and there are a lot of food stalls. There is even a Burger King.

With a diverse selection to choose from, patrons can order any type of food they desire. If needed, customers can simply present a picture of their preferred dish, which Tangshifu will mark on the menu for easy ordering.
We came twice for dinner and can recommend many dishes. My favourite was the fish. And everything else was delicious

Nice place with decent food. I would recommend to come here to eat. The portion is quite huge but it seems quite normal for their daily portion. The rice is free flow based on per pax. Their menu have pictures as well so you know how the dishes looks like.

Best restaurant we tried in the whole area and much better than any recommendation from our hostel. They have a menu in english and you can order any and all food not spicy if prefer that. Can't go wrong. Check my picture and you can just show it to them if that's what you want and they will mark them for you on the selection menu. Enjoy it!

Fantastic food, service and atmosphere. Among the best restaurants I've been in China.

The food was excellent and good value for money. Having the menu in English was very helpful. Staff are friendly and accommodating.

The yellow beef with pickled peppers was some of the best food we had in China. It’s Hunan-hot, tender beef, and absolutely brimming with flavor. The chive and pork pan fried dumplings were great too. The portions are big and rice is free. Our group had enough for leftovers for our train ride the next morning!

One of the traditional restaurants here! Not sure if the name is the same as it shows on Google but I posted the business card of the place with the name on Google so you can see it there. It is great food!
